PVDF-CaAlg nanofiltration membranes with dual thin-film-composite (TFC) structure and high permeation flux for dye removal

Dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) coated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane for simultaneously removing emulsified oils and anionic dyes

Developing high-efficiency membrane for oil and dye removal is very urgent, because wastewater containing them can cause great damage to human and environment. In this study, a coated membrane was fabricated by applying DAC and PEI onto the commercial PVDF microfiltration membrane for supplying the demand. The coated membrane presents superhydrophlic and superoleophobic properties with a water contact angle of 0o and underwater oil contact angle exceed 150°, as well as excellent low underwater oil adhesion performance. The coated membrane shows high separation efficiency exceeded 99.0% and flux 350.0 L·m-2·h-1 when used for separating for six kinds of oil including pump oil, sunflower oil, n-hexadecane, soybean oil, diesel and kerosene in water emulsions. Additionally, the coated membrane can effectively remove anionic dyes, achieving rejection rates of 94.7%, 93.4%, 92.3%, 90.7% for the CR, MB, RB5, AR66, respectively. More importantly, the membrane was able to simultaneously remove emulsified oil and soluble anionic dyes in wastewater containing both of them. Therefore, this novel coated membrane can be a promising candidate for treating complex wastewater.

Fabricated magnetic adsorption - Forward osmosis membrane hybrid system for hydroponic irrigation from rich arsenic-containing heavy metal water stream

Solidification of soluble arsenic from extremely acidic water and direct use of recovery water have been the major challenges in global water management, with the urgent need for new treatment system development. Thus, magnetic adsorption - fertilizer drawn forward osmosis (FDFO) hybrid system with a novel adsorbent and fertilizer mixture to solve the drawbacks of each process was developed with the ultimate goals of metal removal and direct reuse for hydroponic irrigation. Magnetic metal-organic framework-based adsorbent (CMM) was synthesized with various promising capabilities, i.e., wide pH range efficiency, strong pH adjustment, good stability, fast adsorption (1 h), and oxidation (40 min), high capacity (175 and 126 mg/g for As(III), As(V)), strong magnetization (75 emu/g), complete separation by a magnet, excellent interference-tolerance and reusability. In the FDFO system, a massive water volume (50 times higher than the initial draw solution with suitable nutrients for hydroponics irrigation with acceptable NaCl levels was obtained for the first time up to now. However, low As(III) rejection (50%) required the FDFO process to improve more. After integrating with magnetic adsorption, nearly 100% of As was removed. The pH of feed solutions adjusted from extremely acidic to close to neutral conditions further solidified metal by precipitation and membrane separation processes, leading to almost no detection of metals in the final draw solution. Also, favorable nutrients and excellent reusability were obtained. This hybrid process would generally offer an environmentally sustainable and high efficiency for decontaminating As-containing heavy metal water for hydroponic irrigation.

Modified poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanomembranes for dye removal from water - A review

Water contamination due to soluble synthetic dyes has serious concerns. Membrane-based wastewater treatments are emerging as a preferred choice for removing dyes from water. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanomembranes have gained much popularity due to their favorable features. This review explores the application of PVDF-based nanomembranes in synthetic dye removal through various treatments. Different fabrication methods to obtain high performance PVDF-based nanomembranes were discussed under surface coating and blending methods. Studies related to use of PVDF-based nanomembranes in adsorption, filtration, catalysis (oxidant activation, ozonation, Fenton process and photocatalysis) and membrane distillation have been elaborately discussed. Nanomaterials including metal compounds, metals, (synthetic/bio)polymers, metal organic frameworks, carbon materials and their composites were incorporated in PVDF membrane to enhance its performance. The advantages and limitations of incorporating nanomaterials in PVDF-based membranes have been highlighted. The influence of nanomaterials on the surface features, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, crystallinity and catalytic ability of PVDF membrane was discussed. The conclusion of this literature review was given along with future research.

Biofouling in Membrane Bioreactors: Mechanism, Interactions and Possible Mitigation Using Biosurfactants

Biofouling roots damage to membrane bioreactors (MBRs), such as physical, functional and organisational changes and even therefore clogging of the membrane pores and successive microbial degradation. Further, it blocks the pores, results into a biomass cake and in due course reduces the membrane flux and leads to an increase in the operational costs. MBR fouling contributed to the rise in transmembrane pressure (TMP) and decrease in permeate flux (in case of constant pressure operation mode). Chemical surfactants adopted for the cleaning of membrane surfaces have certain disadvantages such as toxicity manifestations, damage to the membranes and high CMC concentrations. Biosurfactant surfactants have attained increasing interest due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, stability to extreme environmental conditions such as temperatures, pH and tolerance to salinity. The biosurfactants trapped the foulants via micelle formation, which distresses hydrophobic interactions amongst bacteria and the surface. Rhamnolipids as an anionic biosurfactant pose a significant interfacial potential and have affinity to bind organic matter. The present review discusses the problem of biofouling in MBRs, type and interactions of foulants involved and also highlights the mechanisms of biosurfactant cleaning, effect of different parameters, effect of concentration, TMP, flux recovery, permeability, mitigation practices and challenges.

Research Progress of Water Treatment Technology Based on Nanofiber Membranes

In the field of water purification, membrane separation technology plays a significant role. Electrospinning has emerged as a primary method to produce nanofiber membranes due to its straightforward, low cost, functional diversity, and process controllability. It is possible to flexibly control the structural characteristics of electrospun nanofiber membranes as well as carry out various membrane material combinations to make full use of their various properties, including high porosity, high selectivity, and microporous permeability to obtain high-performance water treatment membranes. These water separation membranes can satisfy the fast and efficient purification requirements in different water purification applications due to their high filtration efficiency. The current research on water treatment membranes is still focused on creating high-permeability membranes with outstanding selectivity, remarkable antifouling performance, superior physical and chemical performance, and long-term stability. This paper reviewed the preparation methods and properties of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment in various fields, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and other special applications. Lastly, various antifouling technologies and research progress of water treatment membranes were discussed, and the future development direction of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment was also presented.

Optimization of Preparation Conditions of Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) PMIA Hollow Fiber Nanofiltration Membranes for Dye/Salt Wastewater Treatment

Externally selective thin film composite (TFC) hollow fiber (HF) nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) hold great industrial application prospects because of their high surface area module. However, the complicated preparation process of the membrane has hindered its mass manufacture and application. In this work, PMIA TFC HF NFMs were successfully prepared by the interfacial polymerization (IP) of piperazine (PIP) with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). The effect of the membrane preparation conditions on their separation performance was systematically investigated. The characterized results showed the successful formation of a polyamide (PA) separation layer on PMIA HF substrates by the IP process. The as-prepared HF NFMs’ performance under optimized conditions achieved the highest pure water permeability (18.20 L·m−2·h−1, 0.35 MPa) and superior salt rejection in the order: RNa2SO4 (98.30%) > RMgSO4 (94.60%) > RMgCl2 (61.48%) > RNaCl (19.24%). In addition, the as-prepared PMIA HF TFC NFMs exhibited desirable pressure resistance at various operating bars and Na2SO4 feed concentrations. Excellent separation performance of chromotrope 2B dye was also achieved. The as-prepared PMIA HF NFMs thus show great promise for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment.

Gallic Acid-Loaded Sodium Alginate-Based (Polyvinyl Alcohol-Co-Acrylic Acid) Hydrogel Membranes for Cutaneous Wound Healing: Synthesis and Characterization

Traditional wound dressings often cannot treat wounds caused by bacterial infections or other wound types that are insensitive to these wound treatments. Therefore, a biodegradable, bioactive hydrogel wound dressing could be an effective alternative option. The purpose of this study was to develop a hydrogel membrane comprised of sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, acrylic acid, and gallic acid for treating skin wounds. The newly developed membranes were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), sol-gel fraction, porosity, mechanical strength, swelling, drug release and data modelling, polymeric network parameters, biodegradation, and antioxidation (DPPH and ABTS) and antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and negative bacteria. The results revealed that hydrogel membranes were crosslinked successfully and had excellent thermal stability, high drug loading, greater mechanical strength, and exhibited excellent biodegradation. Additionally, the swelling ability and the porosity of the surface facilitated a controlled release of the encapsulated drug (gallic acid), with 70.34% release observed at pH 1.2, 70.10% at pH 5.5 (normal skin pH), and 86.24% at pH 7.4 (wounds pH) in 48 h. The gallic acid-loaded hydrogel membranes showed a greater area of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli bacteria as well as demonstrated excellent antioxidant properties. Based on Franz cell analyses, the permeation flux of the drug from optimized formulations through mice skin was 92 (pH 5.5) and 110 (pH 7.4) μg/cm²·h^-1. Moreover, hydrogel membranes retained significant amounts of drug in the skin for 24 h, such as 2371 (pH 5.5) and 3300 µg/cm² (pH 7.4). Acute dermal irritation tests in rats showed that hydrogel membranes were nonirritating. Hydrogel membranes containing gallic acid could be an effective option for improving wound healing and could result in faster wound healing.

Evaluation of Zn Adenine-Based Bio-MOF for Efficient Remediation of Different Types of Dyes

As an eco-friendly material, Zn-adeninate bio-metal-organic framework (bio-MOF) was investigated as an efficient adsorbent for both anionic and cationic dyes. The adsorption capability of the synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was confirmed by its notable surface area of 52.62 m2 g−1 and total pore volume of 0.183 cm3 g−1. The bio-MOF adsorption profiles of anionic direct red 81 (DR-81) and cationic methylene blue (MB) dyes were investigated under different operating parameters. The optimum dosages of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF were 0.5 g L−1 and 1 g L−1 for MB and DR-81 decolorization, respectively. The pHPZC of Zn-adeninate bio-MOF was 7.2, and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 132.15 mg g–1 for MB, which decreased to 82.54 mg g–1 for DR-81 dye. Thermodynamic data indicated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the decolorization processes. Additionally, the adsorption processes were in agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The synthesized Zn-adeninate bio-MOF could be reused several times with high decolorization ability. These findings demonstrated that the synthesized Zn bio-MOF is an effective and promising adsorbent material for the removal of both cationic and anionic dyes from polluted water.

Antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol nanofiltration membrane incorporated with Cu(OH)2 nanowires for dye/salt wastewater treatment

In many important industries, such as the textile printing industry, a large amount of dye/salt wastewater is often discharged, which can destroy the ecological environment of the water body. Membrane technology has a great potential in the treatment of environmental problems caused by dye/salt wastewater. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane has a bright future in dye/salt wastewater treatment, however, works on this are rare. Herein, antibacterial PVA NF membrane incorporated with Cu(OH)₂ nanowires for the dye/salt wastewater treatment is reported. The membrane was prepared via coating the solutions containing PVA, glutaraldehyde and Cu(OH)₂ nanowires on the polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane. Cu(OH)₂ nanowires has a diameter of 60 nm and was successfully introduced into the membrane. The introduction of nanowires improved the membrane hydrophilicity and roughness, which is conducive to the improvement of membrane flux. Membrane separation performance for one component solution and dye/salt solution were investigated. The introduction of Cu(OH)₂ increases the flux of the membrane obviously (the highest increase is 178.78% (from 21.49 to 38.42 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1, for NaCl solution as the feed). Besides, the membrane doped with nanowires also possessed a high dye/salt selectivity. For one component solution, the dye removal rate was over 97.00% while the salt rejection was low (the lowest was 13.18% (NaCl)). For the dye/salt solution, the dye (Congo Red) rejection kept at a high level (98.91%) and the salt (NaCl) rejection was still low (13.71%), while the flux was also high (37.56 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1). The performance is superior to that of many membranes reported in previous works. Moreover, the Cu(OH)₂ nanowires endowed the membrane with an improved and high antibacterial property. The sterilization rate of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reached more than 99.99%.

High-performance TFNC membrane with adsorption assisted for removal of Pb(II) and other contaminants

Rapid and thorough removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater is critical for the urgent need of clean water. Herein, we prepared a high-performance thin film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) membrane consisting of a polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-UiO-66-(COOH)₂ composite nanofibrous substrate (CPAN) and a calcium alginate (CaAlg) skin layer. Owing to abundant adsorption sites of UiO-66-(COOH)₂ MOF, the optimal CPAN-2 nanofibrous substrate showed excellent adsorption capacity for lead ions. The maximum Pb²⁺ adsorption capacity of CPAN-2 substrate calculated by Langmuir isotherm model was 254.5 mg/g. Meanwhile, due to the relatively loose structure of CaAlg skin layer, this TFNC membrane showed high water permeate flux about 50 L m^-2h^-1 at 0.1 MPa, and the rejection for dyes was higher than 95%. Therefore, CaAlg/CPAN TFNC membranes were appropriate for dynamic adsorption/filtration to remove Pb²⁺. Compared with original CaAlg/PAN membrane, the optimal CaAlg/CPAN TFNC membrane showed much better ability to treat Pb(II)-containing wastewater and had good recyclability. Most importantly, the CaAlg/CPAN TFNC membrane could treat 7659 L m^-2 wastewater containing single lead ions under WHO drinking water standard, and effectively deal with more simulated lead-containing wastewater. This work could provide a substitutable solution for effective removal of heavy metal ions and other various contaminants in wastewater.

Kinetic Study of the Ultrasound Effect on Acid Brown 83 Dye Degradation by Hydrogen Peroxide Oxidation Processes

The effect of ultrasound on the degradation of the dye Acid Brown 83 by seven different degradation methods (blank test using only ultrasound, hydrogen peroxide in a neutral medium, hydrogen peroxide in a sulfuric acid medium and hydrogen peroxide in a sulfuric acid medium in the presence of Fe(II), both without and with ultrasonic irradiation) is studied in this paper. The effectiveness of these methods is compared by analyzing the degradation percentages of the dye and its initial degradation rate. The application of ultrasound leads to a significant increase in the efficiency of any of the degradation method studied. Kinetic study of Acid Brown 83 degradation by the above-mentioned methods is carried out by using four kinetic models (first order, second order, Behnajady and pseudo-first order). The pseudo-first order model is the one that best fits the experimental data in all the used degradation methods. Although when the degradation is performed in the presence of Fe(II), the Behnajady model presents correlation coefficients slightly higher than those of the pseudo-first order, the maximum experimental conversions obtained fit much better in all cases to the pseudo first order model.

Recent Achievements in Dyes Removal Focused on Advanced Oxidation Processes Integrated with Biological Methods

In the last 3 years alone, over 10,000 publications have appeared on the topic of dye removal, including over 300 reviews. Thus, the topic is very relevant, although there are few articles on the practical applications on an industrial scale of the results obtained in research laboratories. Therefore, in this review, we focus on advanced oxidation methods integrated with biological methods, widely recognized as highly efficient treatments for recalcitrant wastewater, that have the best chance of industrial application. It is extremely important to know all the phenomena and mechanisms that occur during the process of removing dyestuffs and the products of their degradation from wastewater to prevent their penetration into drinking water sources. Therefore, particular attention is paid to understanding the mechanisms of both chemical and biological degradation of dyes, and the kinetics of these processes, which are important from a design point of view, as well as the performance and implementation of these operations on a larger scale.
