Effectively adsorb Au(S2O3)23- using aminoguanidine as trapping group from thiosulfate solutions

Thiosulfate gold leaching is one of the most promising green cyanide-free gold extraction processes; however, the difficulty of recovering Au(I) from the leaching system hinders its further development. This study prepared aminoguanidine-functionalized microspheres (AGMs) via a one-step reaction involving nucleophilic substitution between aminoguanidine hydrochloride and chloromethylated polystyrene microspheres and used AGMs to adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure and properties of AGMs. Experiments were designed to investigate the effects of pH, temperature, initial Au(I), and thiosulfate concentrations on the gold adsorption performance of AGMs. Results demonstrated that AGMs can efficiently adsorb Au(I) from thiosulfate solutions in a wide pH range. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum capacity of 22.03 kg/t. Acidic thiourea is an effective desorbent, and after four adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption rate of Au(I) by AGMs is 78.63%, which shows AGMs have good cyclic application potential. Based on the results of characterization, experiments, and density functional theory calculations, the mechanism for the adsorption of [Au(S2O3)2]3- on AGMs involves anion exchange. Importantly, AGMs exhibited satisfactory adsorption property for Au(I) in practical Cu2+-NH3(en)-S2O32- systems. This study provided experimental reference for the recovery of Au(I) from thiosulfate solution.

B-site metal modulation of phosphate adsorption properties and mechanism of LaBO3 (B = Fe, Al and Mn) perovskites

La-based adsorbents are widely used for controlling phosphate concentration in water bodies. In order to explore the effect of different B-site metals regulating La-based perovskites on phosphate adsorption, three La-based perovskites (LaBO₃, B = Fe, Al, and Mn) were prepared using the citric acid sol-gel method. Adsorption experiments showed that LaFeO₃ exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for phosphate, which was 2.7 and 5 times higher than those of LaAlO₃ and LaMnO₃, respectively. The characterization results demonstrated that LaFeO₃ has dispersed particles exhibiting larger pore size and more pores than LaAlO₃ and LaMnO₃. Spectroscopy analysis and density functional theory calculation results showed that different B-positions cause a change in the type of perovskite crystals. Among them, the differences between lattice oxygen consumption ratio, zeta potential and adsorption energy are the main reasons for the differences in adsorption capacity. In addition, the adsorption of phosphate by La-based perovskites were well fitted with Langmuir isotherm and pursues the pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The maximum adsorption capacities were 33.51, 12.31 and 6.61 mg/g for LaFeO₃, LaAlO₃ and LaMnO₃, respectively. The adsorption mechanism was mainly based on inner-sphere complexation and electrostatic attraction. This study provides an explanation for the influence of different B sites on phosphate adsorption by perovskite.

Synthesis and application of quantum dots in detection of environmental contaminants in food: A comprehensive review

Environmental pollutants can accumulate in the human body through the food chain, which may seriously impact human health. Therefore, it is of vital importance to develop quick, simple, accurate and sensitive (respond quickly) technologies to evaluate the concentration of environmental pollutants in food. Quantum dots (QDs)-based fluorescence detection methods have great potential to overcome the shortcomings of traditional detection methods, such as long detection time, cumbersome detection procedures, and low sensitivity. This paper reviews the types and synthesis methods of QDs with a focus on green synthesis and the research progress on rapid detection of environmental pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, pesticides, and antibiotics) in food. Metal-based QDs, carbon-based QDs, and "top-down" and "bottom-up" synthesis methods are discussed in detail. In addition, research progress of QDs in detecting different environmental pollutants in food is discussed, especially, the practical application of these methods is analyzed. Finally, current challenges and future research directions of QDs-based detection technologies are critically discussed. Hydrothermal synthesis of carbon-based QDs with low toxicity from natural materials has a promising future. Research is needed on green synthesis of QDs, direct detection without pre-processing, and simultaneous detection of multiple contaminants. Finally, how to keep the mobile sensor stable, sensitive and easy to store is a hot topic in the future.

A comprehensive investigation of zeolite-rich tuff functionalized with 3-mercaptopropionic acid intercalated green rust for the efficient removal of HgII and CrVI in a binary system

In this study, the 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MA) was chosen to achieve the anionic intercalation into the green rust (GR) materials (MA-GR). The zeolite-rich tuff functionalized with the MA-intercalated GR (MA-GR-tuff) was subsequently synthesized and used to remove both Hg^II cations and Cr^VI anions in a binary system. MA-GR-tuff showed the best adsorption capacities to both Hg^II and Cr^VI among the adsorbent materials. The optimal combination of parameters was determined as the molar ratio of Fe^II to Fe^III of 3.5, the molar ratio of OH^- to the total iron of 3.75, the molar ratio of MA to the total iron of 2.5, and the mass ratio of the total iron to the tuff of 1.25. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model was appropriate in describing the kinetic sorption of Cr^VI by MA-GR-tuff. Both the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Elovich were suitable for explaining Hg^II sorption. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of MA-GR-tuff towards Cr^VI and Hg^II were 185.19 mg/g and 72.99 mg/g, respectively. More flocs and plumes were formed in the MA-GR while the intercalation and more pores and crevices of different sizes were found in the MA-GR-tuff. Sulfhydryl complexation and the molecular sieve of tuff obviously both played a role in influencing the adsorption process. This study directly overcomes the drawback brought by the natural tuff to the treatment of a cationic-and-anionic binary system and supplies a new kind of tuff-based adsorbent for the potential use for the remediation of HM-contaminated wastewater.

Non-thermal plasma irradiated polyaluminum chloride for the heterogeneous adsorption enhancement of Cs+ and Sr2+ in a binary system

The natural ecosystem will continually deteriorate for decades by the leakage of Cs and Sr isotopes. The exploration of the new materials or techniques for the efficient treatment of radioactive wastewater is critically important. In this study, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) configuration was constructed to operate the non-thermal plasma (NTP). The NTP was incorporated into the synthesis of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in two different procedures to intensify the synthesis of PAC (NTP-PAC) and enhance the further removal of Cs and Sr from wastewater. The employment of NTP in two procedures both had significantly changed the physicochemical characteristics of PAC materials, which facilitated the further adsorption application of NTP-PAC on the treatment of Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺. Different molecular, morphological, and adsorption characteristics were confirmed to the NTP-PAC materials. The heterogeneous adsorption of the NTP-PAC can be appropriately fitted by both the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Elovich model. Both physisorption and chemisorption reaction mechanisms were ensured for the heterogeneous adsorption of the NTP-PAC material towards Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺, which guaranteed the excellent adsorption performance of NTP-PAC materials compared to PAC. The electron collisions caused by NTP with alum pulp created highly reactive growth precursors and intensified the nucleation and hydrolysis polymerization of PAC. The employment of NTP explicitly broadens the reaction pathways between PAC and cationic contaminants in the aqueous environment, which expands the application area of PAC materials in environmental sustainability.
