Adsorption of toxic dye in wastewater onto magnetic NVP/CS nanocomposite hydrogels synthesized using gamma radiation

Multifunctional chitosan-based composite hydrogels engineered for sensing applications

Chitosan-based hydrogels, as natural high-molecular-weight flexible materials, are widely utilized due to their outstanding properties. In this research, we developed a one-pot method for synthesizing a novel PVA/CS@PPy-PDAx% conductive hydrogel and explored the internal bonding patterns through molecular dynamics simulations. By adding PPy-PDA nanoparticles into a hydrogel matrix, an interpenetrating conductive network established successfully. The uniform distribution of PPy-PDA nanoparticles endowed the hydrogel with good electrical conductivity (0.171 S/m), significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and strain sensing (S = 5.04), as well as near-infrared photothermal responsiveness (temperature increase of 41.9 °C within 30 s). Additionally, due to the hydrogel's significant photothermal conversion efficiency under near-infrared radiation, it exhibits rapid elimination of Escherichia coli with an antibacterial efficiency exceeding 90 %. The unique hydrogen-bonded crosslinked structure provides the hydrogel with excellent re-healing properties, allowing for restoration through a freeze-thaw process after damage. The conductivity remains nearly unchanged after re-healing, maintaining the material's integrity and functionality. The flexible sensor based on this hydrogel has a response time of 100 ms and can sensitively detect large-scale deformations (e.g., joint bending at various angles), different gravitational forces, and recognize human handwriting. These characteristics make this hydrogel a promising candidate for advancing intelligent wearable technologies and human-machine interaction systems.

Overlooked Activation Role of Sulfite in Accelerating Hydrated Electron Treatment of Perfluorosulfonates

Photoexcitation of sulfite (SO32-) is often used to generate hydrated electrons (eaq-) in processes to degrade perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Conventional consensus discourages the utilization of SO32- concentrations exceeding 10 mM for effective defluorination. This has hindered our understanding of SO32- chemistry beyond its electron photogeneration properties. In contrast, the radiation-chemical study presented here, directly producing eaq- through water radiolysis, suggests that SO32- plays a previously overlooked activation role in the defluorination. Quantitative 60Co gamma irradiation experiments indicate that the increased SO32- concentration from 0.1 to 1 M enhances the defluorination rate by a remarkable 15-fold, especially for short-chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonate (PFSA). Furthermore, during the treatment of long-chain PFSA (C8F17-SO3-) with a higher concentration of SO32-, the intermediates of C8H17-SO3- and C3F7-COO- were observed, which are absent without SO32-. These observations highlight that a higher concentration of SO32- facilitates both reaction pathways: chain shortening and H/F exchange. Pulse radiolysis measurements show that elevated SO32- concentrations accelerate the bimolecular reaction between eaq- and PFSA by 2 orders of magnitude. 19F NMR measurements and theoretical simulations reveal the noncovalent interactions between SO32- and F atoms, which exceptionally reduce the C-F bond dissociation energy by nearly 40%. As a result, our study offers a more effective strategy for degrading highly persistent PFSA contaminants.

Gamma irradiation induced degradation of organic pollutants: Recent advances and future perspective

Different organic compounds in aquatic bodies have been recognized as an emerging issue in Environmental Chemistry. The gamma irradiation technique, as one of the advanced oxidation techniques, has been widely investigated in past decades as a technique for the degradation of organic molecules, such as dyes, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, which show high persistence to degradation. This review gives an overview of what has been achieved so far using gamma irradiation for different organic compound degradations giving an explanation of the mechanisms of degradations as well as the corresponding limitations and drawbacks, and the answer to why this technique has not yet widely come to life. Also, a new approach, recently presented in the literature, regards coupling gamma irradiation with other techniques and materials, as the latest trend. A critical evaluation of the most recent advances achieved by coupling gamma irradiation with other methods and/or materials, as well as describing the reaction mechanisms of coupling, that is, additional destabilization of molecules achieved by coupling, emphasizing the advantages of the newly proposed approach. Finally, it was concluded what are the perspectives and future directions towards its commercialization since this technique can contribute to waste minimization i.e. not waste transfer to other media. Summarizing and generalization the model of radiolytic degradation with and without coupling with other techniques can further guide designing a new modular, mobile method that will satisfy all the needs for its wide commercial application.

Study on material structure design, selective adsorption mechanism, and application for adsorption recovery of oil substances in coal chemical wastewater

In response to the problem of high emulsified and dissolved oils being difficult to recovery from coal chemical wastewater (CCW), this study specifically constructed a non-polar, macropore, and hydrophobic adsorption material (pSt-X) based on the main components of these two oils (aromatics and phenols) for selective recovery. The results revealed that pSt-X had an adsorption capacity of 215.52 mg/g, which had remained stable for multiple recycling sessions, with an adsorption capacity constantly above 95 %. The pSt-X has significantly larger particle size (0.7 mm-1.2 mm), which simplifies the process of adsorption regeneration and effectively prevents the loss of the adsorbent powder problem. The pSt-X adsorbent demonstrated remarkable selectivity towards dissolved and emulsified oils, exhibiting removal rates of 90.2 % and 81.7 %, respectively. Moreover, pSt-X proved remarkable selectivity in removing aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) and phenols, with impressive removal rates of 77.8 % and 85.9 %, respectively. The selective separation mechanism of pSt-X for oil substances was further analyzed, indicating that its selective adsorption of oils was primarily driven by hydrophobic, π-π, and hydrogen bonding interactions owing to its non-polar and macropore structure and hydrophobic properties. The results of this study provide solid theoretical support for green and low-carbon recovery of oil substances in CCW and are of positive practical importance for clean production in the coal chemical industry.

Efficacious adsorption of divalent nickel ions over sodium alginate-g-poly(acrylamide)/hydrolyzed Luffa cylindrica-CoFe2O4 bionanocomposite hydrogel

Existing Ni2+ heavy metal ions in an aqueous medium are highly hazardous for living organisms and humans. Therefore, designing low-cost adsorbents with enhanced effectiveness is essential for removing nickel ions to safeguard public health. In this study, a novel green nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized through the free radical solution and bulk polymerization method, and its capability to remove divalent nickel ions from aqueous media was examined. The bionanocomposite hydrogel named as SA-g-poly(AAm)/HL-CoFe2O4 was produced by grafting polyacrylamide (AAm) onto sodium alginate (SA) in the presence of a magnetic composite recognized as HL-CoFe2O4, where HL represents hydrolyzed Luffa Cylindrica. By employing FT-IR, XRD, VSM, SEM, EDX-Map, BET, DLS, HPLC, and TGA techniques, morphological evaluation and characterization of the adsorbents were carried out. The performance of the adsorption process was studied under varying operational conditions including pH, temperature, contact duration, initial concentration of pollutant ions, and adsorbent dosage. HPLC analysis proved the non-toxic structure of the bionanocomposite hydrogel. The number of unreacted acrylamide monomers within the hydrogel matrix was measured at 20.82 mg/kg. The optimum conditions was discovered to be pH = 6, room temperature, adsorbent dosage of 1 of g.L-1, initial Ni2+ concentration of 10 mg.L-1, and contact time of 100 min, and the maximum adsorption efficiency at optimal state was calculated as 70.09, 90.25, and 93.83 % for SA-g-poly (AAm), SA-g-poly(AAm)/HL, and SA-g-poly(AAm)/HL-CoFe2O4 samples, respectively. Langmuir isotherm model was in good agreement with the experimental data and the maximum adsorption capacity of SA-g-poly(AAm), SA-g-poly(AAm)/HL, and SA-g-poly(AAm)/HL-CoFe2O4 samples was calculated to be 31.37, 43.15, and 45.19 mg.g-1, respectively. The adsorption process, according to kinetic studies, follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Investigations on thermodynamics also demonstrated that the process is exothermic and spontaneous. Exploring the interference effect of co-existing ions showed that the adsorption efficiency has decreased with concentration enhancement of Ca2+ and Na+ cations in aqueous medium. Furthermore, the adsorption/desorption assessments revealed that after 8 consecutive cycles, there had been no noticeable decline in the adsorption effectiveness. Finally, actual wastewater treatment outcomes demonstrated that the bionanocomposite hydrogel successfully removes heavy metal pollutants from shipbuilding industry effluent. Therefore, the findings revealed that the newly fabricated bionanocomposite hydrogel is an efficient, cost-effective, easy-separable, and green adsorbent that could be potentially utilized to remove divalent nickel ions from wastewater.

Preparation and Characterization of Fe3O4/Poly(HEMA-co-IA) Magnetic Hydrogels for Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution

In the present study, Fe3O4/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) magnetic hydrogels (MHGs) were prepared by in situ synthesis of Fe3O4 magnetic particles in hydrogels (HGs). The resulting magnetic hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and N2 adsorption-desorption. The effect of Fe3O4 on the swelling behavior and adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye of the prepared hydrogel was studied. Parameters such as the dose, pH, contact time, and MB initial concentration were investigated. The results show that 75% (HG) and 91% (MHG) of MB (200 mg/L) were removed at doses of 2 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL, respectively, under a pH of 6.8 and a contact time of 10 min. The adsorption behavior followed the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process takes place in monolayers and on homogeneous surfaces. The Langmuir capacities for MB adsorption using the HGs and MHGs were 78 and 174 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, thermodynamic studies carried out show that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Adsorption-desorption studies indicate that the magnetic hydrogel can remove MB for four cycles with removal efficiencies above 90%. Therefore, a MHG is suitable as an alternative material for MB adsorption.

A review on remediation of dye adulterated system by ecologically innocuous "biopolymers/natural gums-based composites"

The mitigation of wastewater exploiting biopolymers/natural gums-based composites is an appealing research theme in today's scenario. The following review presents a comprehensive description of the polysaccharides derived from biopolymers (chitosan, collagen, cellulose, starch, pectin, lignin, and alginate) and natural gums (guar, gellan, carrageenan, karaya, moringa oliefera, tragacanth, and xanthan gum). These biopolymers/natural gums-based composites depicted excellent surface functionality, non-toxicity, economic and environmental viability, which corroborated them as potential candidates in the decontamination process. The presence of -OH, -COOH, and -NH functional groups in their backbone rendered them tailorable for modification/functionalization, and anchor an array of pollutants via electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and Van der Waals forces. Further, due to these functional moieties, these bio-based composites revealed an excellent adsorption capacity than conventional adsorbents. This review provides an overview of the classification of biopolymers/natural gums based on their origin, different ways of their modification, and the remediation of dye-contaminated aqueous environments employing diverse bio-based adsorbents. The isotherm, kinetic modelling along with thermodynamics of the adsorption process is discussed. Additionally, the reusable efficacy of these bio-adsorbents is reviewed.

Recent advances in adsorption of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks-based hydrogels

Water pollution is increasing significantly owing to industrialization and population growth that lead to serious environmental and health issues. Therefore, the design and development of more effective wastewater treatment approaches are necessary due to a significant upsurge in demand for freshwater. More recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in environmental science owing to their tunable porosity, unique structure, flexibility, and various composition. Despite these attractive advantages, some drawbacks, including intrinsic fragility, unsatisfied processability, dust formation, and poor reusability, have greatly limited their applications. Therefore, MOFs are often designed as supported-based MOFs (e.g., MOFs-coated composites) or 3D structured composites, such as MOFs-based hydrogels. MOFs-based hydrogels are excellent candidates in the sorption process because of their appropriate adsorption capacity, porous structure, good mechanical properties, durability as well as biodegradable features. In this review, the removal of different pollutants (e.g., synthetic dyes, phosphates, heavy metals, antibiotics, and some organic compounds) from aqueous media has been studied by the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels. The important advancements in the fabrication of MOFs-based hydrogels and their capacities in the adsorption of pollutants under experimental conditions have been discussed. Finally, problems and future perspectives on the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels have been investigated.

Recent developments of polysaccharide based superabsorbent nanocomposite for organic dye contamination removal from wastewater - A review

One of the main problems with water pollution is dye contamination of rivers, industrial effluents, and water sources. It has endangered the world's sources of drinking water. Several remediation strategies have been carefully developed and tested to minimize this ominous picture. Due to their appealing practical and financial benefits, adsorption methods in particular are often listed as one of the most popular solutions to remediate dye-contaminated water. Biopolymer-based hydrogel nanocomposites are a cutting-edge class of materials with a wide range of applications that are effective in removing organic dyes from the environment. Since the incorporation of various materials into hydrogel matrices generated composite materials with distinct characteristics, these unique materials were often alluded to as ideal adsorbents. The fundamental emphasis of the conceptual and critical review of the literature in this research is the significant potential of hydrogel nanocomposites (HNCs) to remediate dye-contaminated water (especially for articles from the previous five years). The review also provides knowledge for the development of biopolymer-based HNCs, prospects, and opportunities for future research. It is also focused on optimum conditions for dye adsorption processes along with their adsorption kinetics and isotherm models. In summary, the information gained in this review research may contribute to a strengthened scientific rationale for the practical and efficient application of these novel adsorbent materials.

Green and Superior Adsorbents Derived from Natural Plant Gums for Removal of Contaminants: A Review

The ubiquitous presence of contaminants in water poses a major threat to the safety of ecosystems and human health, and so more materials or technologies are urgently needed to eliminate pollutants. Polymer materials have shown significant advantages over most other adsorption materials in the decontamination of wastewater by virtue of their relatively high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption rate. In recent years, "green development" has become the focus of global attention, and the environmental friendliness of materials themselves has been concerned. Therefore, natural polymers-derived materials are favored in the purification of wastewater due to their unique advantages of being renewable, low cost and environmentally friendly. Among them, natural plant gums show great potential in the synthesis of environmentally friendly polymer adsorption materials due to their rich sources, diverse structures and properties, as well as their renewable, non-toxic and biocompatible advantages. Natural plant gums can be easily modified by facile derivatization or a graft polymerization reaction to enhance the inherent properties or introduce new functions, thus obtaining new adsorption materials for the efficient purification of wastewater. This paper summarized the research progress on the fabrication of various gums-based adsorbents and their application in the decontamination of different types of pollutants. The general synthesis mechanism of gums-based adsorbents, and the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for different types of pollutants were also discussed. This paper was aimed at providing a reference for the design and development of more cost-effective and environmentally friendly water purification materials.

Recent Advances in Smart Hydrogels Prepared by Ionizing Radiation Technology for Biomedical Applications

Materials with excellent biocompatibility and targeting can be widely used in the biomedical field. Hydrogels are an excellent biomedical material, which are similar to living tissue and cannot affect the metabolic process of living organisms. Moreover, the three-dimensional network structure of hydrogel is conducive to the storage and slow release of drugs. Compared to the traditional hydrogel preparation technologies, ionizing radiation technology has high efficiency, is green, and has environmental protection. This technology can easily adjust mechanical properties, swelling, and so on. This review provides a classification of hydrogels and different preparation methods and highlights the advantages of ionizing radiation technology in smart hydrogels used for biomedical applications.

Adsorption Properties and Mechanism of Attapulgite to Graphene Oxide in Aqueous Solution

In order to remove toxic graphene oxide (GO) from aqueous solution, attapulgite (ATP) was used as adsorbent to recycle it by adsorption. In this paper, the effects of different pH, adsorbent mass, GO concentration, time and temperature on the adsorption of GO by attapulgite were studied, and the adsorption performance and mechanism were further explored by XRD, AFM, XPS, FTIR, TEM and SEM tests. The results show that when T = 303 K, pH = 3, and the GO concentration is 100 mg/L in 50 mL of aqueous solution, the removal rate of GO by 40 mg of attapulgite reaches 92.83%, and the partition coefficient Kd reaches 16.31. The adsorption kinetics results showed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached at 2160 min, and the adsorption process could be described by the pseudo-second-order adsorption equation, indicating that the adsorption process was accompanied by chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. The isotherm and thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption of GO by attapulgite is more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the reaction is a spontaneous endothermic process. The analysis shows that attapulgite is a good material for removing GO, which can provide a reference for the removal of GO in an aqueous environment.

Magnetic Adsorbents for Wastewater Treatment: Advancements in Their Synthesis Methods

The remediation of water streams, polluted by various substances, is important for realizing a sustainable future. Magnetic adsorbents are promising materials for wastewater treatment. Although numerous techniques have been developed for the preparation of magnetic adsorbents, with effective adsorption performance, reviews that focus on the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for wastewater treatment and their material structures have not been reported. In this review, advancements in the synthesis methods of magnetic adsorbents for the removal of substances from water streams has been comprehensively summarized and discussed. Generally, the synthesis methods are categorized into five groups, as follows: direct use of magnetic particles as adsorbents, attachment of pre-prepared adsorbents and pre-prepared magnetic particles, synthesis of magnetic particles on pre-prepared adsorbents, synthesis of adsorbents on preprepared magnetic particles, and co-synthesis of adsorbents and magnetic particles. The main improvements in the advanced methods involved making the conventional synthesis a less energy intensive, more efficient, and simpler process, while maintaining or increasing the adsorption performance. The key challenges, such as the enhancement of the adsorption performance of materials and the design of sophisticated material structures, are discussed as well.
