Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole on polypyrrole decorated volcanics over a wide pH range: Mechanisms and site energy distribution consideration

From wastewater to clean water: Recent advances on the removal of metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole antibiotics from water through adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)

Antibiotics released into water sources pose significant risks to both human health and the environment. This comprehensive review meticulously examines the ecotoxicological impacts of three prevalent antibiotics-ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and sulfamethoxazole-on the ecosystems. Within this framework, our primary focus revolves around the key remediation technologies: adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this context, an array of adsorbents is explored, spanning diverse classes such as biomass-derived biosorbents, graphene-based adsorbents, MXene-based adsorbents, silica gels, carbon nanotubes, carbon-based adsorbents, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), carbon nanofibers, biochar, metal oxides, and nanocomposites. On the flip side, the review meticulously examines the main AOPs widely employed in water treatment. This includes a thorough analysis of ozonation (O3), the photo-Fenton process, UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), TiO2 photocatalysis, ozone/UV (O3/UV), radiation-induced AOPs, and sonolysis. Furthermore, the review provides in-depth insights into equilibrium isotherm and kinetic models as well as prospects and challenges inherent in these cutting-edge processes. By doing so, this review aims to empower readers with a profound understanding, enabling them to determine research gaps and pioneer innovative treatment methodologies for water contaminated with antibiotics.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and lincomycin from single and binary aqueous systems using acid-modified biochar from activated sludge biomass

The extensive use of pharmaceuticals has raised growing concerns regarding their presence in surface waters. High concentrations of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and lincomycin (LIN), as commonly prescribed antibiotics, persist in various wastewaters and surface waters, posing risks to public health and the environment. Biochar derived from accessible biowaste, like activated sludge biomass, offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to mitigate antibiotic release into water systems. This study investigates the effectiveness of H3PO4-modified activated sludge-based biochar (PBC) synthesized through microwave (MW) heating for the adsorption of SMX and LIN antibiotics. The synthesis parameters of PBC were optimized using a central composite design considering MW power, time, and H3PO4 concentration. Characterization results validate the efficacy of the synthesis process creating a specific surface area of 365 m2/g, and well-developed porosity with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Batch and dynamic adsorption experiments were piloted to assess the adsorption performance of PBC in single and binary antibiotic systems. Results show that PBC exhibits a higher affinity for SMX rather than LIN, with maximum adsorption capacities of 45.6 mg/g and 26.6 mg/g, respectively. Based on kinetic studies chemisorption is suggested as the primary mechanism for SMX and LIN removal. Equilibrium studies show a strong agreement with the Redlich-Peterson isotherm, suggesting a composite adsorption mechanism with a greater probability of multilayer adsorption for both antibiotics. Hydrogen bonding and π-π electron sharing are suggested as the prevailing adsorption mechanisms of SMX and LIN on the modified biochar. Furthermore, a dynamic adsorption system was replicated using a fixed bed column setup, demonstrating effective removal of SMX and LIN from pure water and real wastewater samples using PBC-loaded hydrogel beads (PBC-B). These findings serve as crucial support for upcoming studies concerning the realistic application of sludge-based biochar in the removal of antibiotics from water systems.

Competitive adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and bisphenol A on magnetic biochar: Mechanism and site energy distribution

Competitive adsorption and complementary adsorption between emerging pollutants has been observed in multiple studies. Investigation of the preference of pollutants for different types of adsorption sites can provide a supplementary perspective for understanding complementary adsorption. In this study, the simultaneous adsorption of two typical emerging pollutants, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and bisphenol A (BPA), on magnetic biochar (MBC-1) was investigated. The results showed that the modification with ferric chloride optimized the surface properties of biochar (aromaticity, hydrophobicity, and oxygen-containing functional groups, etc.), and helped to remove SMX and BPA through various interactions. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the two adsorbents was inhibited by competitive adsorption in the mixed solute systems, which was due to the same adsorption mechanism. When pH = 7, the SMX and BPA adsorption mainly involved pore filling, hydrophobic effect, π-π EDA, and hydrogen bonding. In addition, electrostatic force, surface coordination, and ion exchange have also been proven to be related to the adsorption of SMX and BPA. In the co-adsorption system, BPA's competitive advantage might be due to its superior hydrophobicity, charge property, and molecular diameter. In the competitive adsorption experiment, the total adsorption capacity (Q_i) of the competitive solute exceeded the adsorption inhibition (△Q_i) of the main solute, indicating that the two solutes occupied their preferred adsorption sites, which confirmed the complementary adsorption phenomenon. Complementary adsorption can be explained by the preference of SMX and BPA for different types of adsorption sites. BPA preferentially occupied high-energy sites in the co-adsorption system, such as π-π EDA interaction, ion exchange, and surface coordination. At the same time, SMX tended to be removed by hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding.

A critical review of adsorption isotherm models for aqueous contaminants: Curve characteristics, site energy distribution and common controversies

The quantitative description of the equilibrium data by the isotherm models is an indispensable link in adsorption studies. The previous review papers focus on the underlying assumptions, fitting methods, error functions and practical applications of the isotherm models, usually ignoring their curve characteristics, selection criteria and common controversies. The main contents of this review include: (i) effect of the model parameters on the isotherm curves; (ii) determination of the site energy distribution; (iii) selection criteria of the isotherm models; and (iv) elimination of some common controversies. It is of great significance to reveal the curve characteristics for selecting a proper isotherm model. The site energy distribution is conducive to understanding the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent surface. The complete isotherm is recommended to be correlated with the experimental data. The model parameter q_max should be cautiously adopted for comparison of the adsorbent performance. The residual plot can be used to diagnose the fitting quality of the isotherm models further. This review also addresses some common mistakes and controversies and thereby avoids their propagation in future publications.

Mechanisms and influencing factors of yttrium sorption on paddy soil: Experiments and modeling

High-technology rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging contaminants have potentially hazardous risks for human health and the environment. Investigating the sorption of REEs on soils is crucial for understanding their migration and transformation. This study evaluated the sorption mechanisms and influencing factors of the rare earth element yttrium (Y) on paddy soil via integrated batch sorption experiments and theoretical modeling analysis. Site energy distribution theory (SEDT) combined with kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm sorption models were applied to illustrate the sorption mechanism. In addition, the effects of phosphorus (P), solution pH, particle size of soil microaggregates, and initial Y content on the sorption processes were evaluated by self-organizing map (SOM) and Boruta algorithm. The sorption kinetic behavior of Y on paddy soil was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic results showed that the Y sorption was a spontaneous endothermic reaction. The generalized Langmuir model well described the isotherm data of Y sorption on heterogeneous paddy soil and soil microaggregates surface. The maximum sorption capacity of Y decreased with increasing soil particle size, which may be related to the number of sorption sites for Y on paddy soil and soil microaggregates, as confirmed by SEDT. The heterogeneity of sorption site energy for Y was the highest in the original paddy soil compared with the separated soil microaggregates. The SOM technique and Boruta algorithm highlighted that the initial concentration of Y and coexisting phosphorus played essential roles in the sorption process of Y, indicating that the addition of phosphate fertilizer may be an effective way to reduce the Y bioavailability in paddy soil in practice. These results can provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management of soil REEs and a theoretical foundation for the remediation of REEs-contaminated soils.

Nano-remediation technologies for the sustainable mitigation of persistent organic pollutants

The absence of novel and efficient methods for the elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the environment is a serious concern in the society. The pollutants release into the atmosphere by means of industrialization and urbanization is a massive global hazard. Although, the eco-toxicity associated with nanotechnology is still being debated, nano-remediation is a potentially developing tool for dealing with contamination of the environment, particularly POPs. Nano-remediation is a novel strategy to the safe and long-term removal of POPs. This detailed review article presents an important perspective on latest innovations and future views of nano-remediation methods used for environmental decontamination, like nano-photocatalysis and nanosensing. Different kinds of nanomaterials including nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), magnetic and metallic nanoparticles, silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles, graphene oxide, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been summarized for the mitigation of POPs. Furthermore, the long-term viability of nano-remediation strategies for dealing with legacy contamination was considered, with a particular emphasis on environmental and health implications. The assessment goes on to discuss the environmental consequences of nanotechnology and offers consensual recommendations on how to employ nanotechnology for a greater present and a more prosperous future.
