In situ one-pot construction of MOF/hydrogel composite beads with enhanced wastewater treatment performance

Performance of magnetic nanocomposite based on xanthan gum-grafted-poly(acrylamide) crosslinked by borax for the effective elimination of amoxicillin from aquatic environments

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using nanocomposite (NCs) of xanthan gum grafted polyacrylamide crosslinked Borax - iron oxide nanoparticle (XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP) to remove the amoxicillin antibiotic (AMX) from an aquatic environment. To confirm the structural characteristics of the prepared XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs, unique characterization methods (XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, BET, TGA, Zeta, and VSM) were used. Adsorption experimental setups were performed with the influence of solution pH (4-9), the effect of adsorbent dose (0.003-0.02 g), the effect of contact time (5-45 min), and the effect of initial AMX concentration (50-400 mg/L) to achieve the most efficient adsorption conditions. Based on the Freundlich isotherm model, XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs provided the maximum AMX adsorption capacity of 1183.639 mg/g. This research on adsorption kinetics also established that the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.991) is outstanding compatibility with the experimental results. AMX adsorption on the NCs may occur through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, diffusion, and trapping into the polymer network. Even after five cycles, these NCs still displayed the best performance. Based on these results, XG-g-pAAm-CL-Borax-IONP NCs may be a viable material for the purification of AMX from contaminated water.

Separable Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for the Adsorption of Emerging Contaminants

Thousands of chemicals have been released into the environment in recent decades. The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water has emerged as a pressing concern. Adsorption is a viable solution for the removal of ECs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential as efficient adsorbents, but their dispersed powder form limits their practical applications. Recently, researchers have developed various separable MOF-based adsorbents to improve their recyclability. The purpose of this review is to summarize the latest developments in the construction of separable MOF-based adsorbents and their applications in adsorbing ECs. The construction strategies for separable MOFs are classified into four categories: magnetic MOFs, MOF-fiber composites, MOF gels, and binder-assisted shaping. Typical emerging contaminants include pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The adsorption performance of different materials is evaluated based on the results of static and dynamic adsorption experiments. Additionally, the regeneration methods of MOF-based adsorbents are discussed in detail to facilitate effective recycling and reuse. Finally, challenges and potential future research opportunities are proposed, including reducing performance losses during the shaping process, developing assessment systems based on dynamic purification and real polluted water, optimizing regeneration methods, designing multifunctional MOFs, and low-cost, large-scale synthesis of MOFs.

A review on development and modification strategies of MOFs Z-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic wastewater treatment, water splitting, and DFT calculations

Increasing water pollution and decreasing energy reserves have emerged as growing concerns for the environment. These pollution are due to the dangerous effects of numerous pollutants on humans and aquatic organisms, such as hydrocarbons, biphenyls, pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, and metal ions. On the other hand, the need for a clean environment, finding alternatives to fossil and renewable fuels is very important. Hydrogen (H2) is regarded as a viable and promising substitute for fossil fuels, and a range of methodologies have been devised to generate this particular source of energy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new generation of nanoporous coordination polymers whose crystal structure is composed of the juxtaposition of organic and inorganic constituent units. Due to their flexible nature, regular structure, and high surface area, these materials have attracted much attention for removing various pollutants from water and wastewater, and water splitting. MOFs Z-scheme heterojunctions have been identified as an economical and eco-friendly method for eliminating pollutants from wastewater systems, and producing H2. Their low-cost synthesis and unique properties increase their application in various energy and environment fields. The heterojunctions possess diverse properties, such as exceptional surface area, making them ideal for degradation and separation. The development and formulation of Z-scheme heterojunctions photocatalytic systems using MOFs, which possess stable and potent redox capability, have emerged as a successful approach for addressing environmental pollution and energy shortages in recent times. Through the utilization of the benefits offered by MOFs Z-scheme heterojunctions photocatalysts, such as efficient separation and migration of charge carriers, extensive spectrum of light absorption, among other advantages, notable enhancements can be attained. This review encompasses the synthesis techniques, structure, and properties of MOFs Z-scheme heterojunctions, and their extensive use in treating various wastewaters, including dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals, and water splitting. Also, it provides an overview of the mechanisms, pathways, and various theoretical and practical aspects for MOFs Z-scheme heterojunctions. Finally, it thoroughly assesses existing challenges and suggests further research on the promising applications of MOFs Z-scheme in industrial-scale wastewater treatment.

Multiporous ZIF-8 carbon/cellulose composite beads: Highly efficient and scalable adsorbents for water treatment

Metal-organic framework (MOF) particles are one of the most promising adsorbents for removing organic contaminants from wastewater. However, powder-type MOF particles face challenges in terms of utilization and recovery. In this study, a novel bead-type adsorbent was prepared using activated carbon based on the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AC-ZIF-8) and a regenerated cellulose hydrogel for dye removal. AC-ZIF-8 particles with a large surface area were obtained by carbonization and chemical activation with KOH. The AC-ZIF-8 powders were efficiently immobilized in hydrophilic cellulose hydrogel beads via cellulose dissolution/regeneration. The prepared AC-ZIF-8/cellulose hydrogel (AC-ZIF-8/CH) composite beads exhibit a large specific surface area of 1412.8 m2/g and an excellent maximum adsorption capacity of 565.13 mg/g for Rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the AC-ZIF-8/CH beads were effective over a wide range of pH, temperatures and for different types of dyes. These composite beads also offer economic benefits through desorption of dyes for recycling. The AC-ZIF-8/CH beads can be produced in substantial amounts and used as fillers in a fixed-bed column system, which can purify the continuous inflow of dye solutions. These findings suggest that our simple approach for preparing high-performance adsorbent beads will broaden the application of dye adsorbents, oil-water separation, and catalysts.

Biopolymer-based beads for the adsorptive removal of organic pollutants from wastewater: Current state and future perspectives

Among biopolymer-based adsorbents, composites in the form of beads have shown promising results in terms of high adsorption capacity and ease of separation from the effluents. This review addresses the potential of biopolymer-based beads to remediate wastewaters polluted with emerging organic contaminants, for instance dyes, active pharmaceutical ingredients, pesticides, phenols, oils, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls. High adsorption capacities up to 2541.76 mg g-1 for dyes, 392 mg g-1 for pesticides and phenols, 1890.3 mg g-1 for pharmaceuticals, and 537 g g-1 for oils and organic solvents have been reported. The review also attempted to convey to its readers the significance of wastewater treatment through adsorption by providing an overview on decontamination technologies of organic water contaminants. Various preparation methods of biopolymer-based gel beads and adsorption mechanisms involved in the process of decontamination have been summarized and analyzed. Therefore, we believe there is an urge to discuss the current state of the application of biopolymer-based gel beads for the adsorption of organic pollutants from wastewater and future perspectives in this regard since it is imperative to treat wastewater before releasing into freshwater bodies.

Efficient removal of cationic dye using ZIF-8 based sodium alginate composite beads: Performance evaluation in batch and column systems

The environmental and health risks associated with dye contamination in water sources are alarming. Recently, researchers have been focusing on developing an innovative and susceptible solution using composite beads that effectively combat this issue. In this paper, beads were synthesized using a sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) through a simple dipping process. Several characterization tests were performed including XRD, FTIR, BET, TGA, and SEM-EDX. The SEM images confirmed that SA effectively coated the cubical structure of the ZIF-8, ensuring optimal performance. The efficiency of the resulting SA@ZIF-8 composite beads was tested on both synthetic malachite green dye and real industrial wastewater samples using batch and fixed bed column reactors. The findings revealed that maximum adsorption of 95.5% was achieved at pH 6 in 120 min of reaction time. FTIR and SEM analysis also confirmed the adsorption of MG dye onto the beads. The Freundlich isotherm model (R2 > 0.99) has a better fit than the Langmuir (R2 > 0.96) for describing the adsorption process. The PSO model predicted the kinetics of the system, whereas the intraparticle diffusion study supported the system's mechanistic analysis. Furthermore, the study also investigated the efficacy of the beads in treating real wastewater effluent samples collected from the dye industry. Overall, using sodium alginate-coated ZIF-8 beads was found to have many advantages over powdered ZIF-8, including higher selectivity, stability, reusability, and practicality, making them a promising alternative for adsorption applications. Therefore, these composite beads have the potential for the removal of the dye from wastewater, which could be widely applied in various industries.

Modified alginate materials for wastewater treatment: Application prospects

Sodium alginate is a natural macromolecule widely used because of its abundance, low cost of acquisition, and rich hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the matrix. The physical modification of sodium alginate can be made by blending it with polymer materials. The so-yielded alginate complex is commonly unstable in an aqueous environment due to alginate backbones' high hydrophilicity. The chemical modification can remove its hydrophilic groups and introduce special functional groups or polymers onto the alginate backbones to provide excess reaction sites for specific reactions and effective complexation sites for accommodating antibiotics, dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. Sodium alginate has been used in water treatment engineering under revised modification protocols. This article also reviews the latest modification protocols for sodium alginate and outlines the novel application of the modified materials. The limitations of modified sodium alginate materials are described, and research prospects are put forward.

Review: Synthesis of metal organic framework-based composites for application as immunosensors in food safety

Ensuring food safety continues to be one of the major global challenges. For effective food safety monitoring, fast, sensitive, portable, and efficient food safety detection strategies must be devised. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials that have attracted attention for use in high-performance sensors for food safety detection owing to their advantages such as high porosity, large specific surface area, adjustable structure, and easy surface functional modification. Immunoassay strategies based on antigen-antibody specific binding are one of the important means for accurate and rapid detection of trace contaminants in food. Emerging MOFs and their composites with excellent properties are being synthesized, providing new ideas for immunoassays. This article summarizes the synthesis strategies of MOFs and MOF-based composites and their applications in the immunoassays of food contaminants. The challenges and prospects of the preparation and immunoassay applications of MOF-based composites are also presented. The findings of this study will contribute to the development and application of novel MOF-based composites with excellent properties and provide insights into advanced and efficient strategies for developing immunoassays.

Preparation of SA/P(U-AM-ChCl) composite hydrogels by frontal polymerization and its performance study

Deep eutectic solvent (DES) was synthesized from urea (U), acrylamide (AM) and choline chloride (ChCl), sodium alginate (SA) was selected as filler, and SA/P(U-AM-ChCl) composite hydrogel was prepared by thermal initiation frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of SA on the swelling properties, mechanical properties and self-healing properties of the composite hydrogels were investigated. The results show that the swelling properties of the composite hydrogel with the addition of SA are greatly enhanced due to the large number of hydroxyl groups contained in the SA chain. The tensile strength of the hydrogel gradually increased with increasing SA content, with the maximum tensile strength increasing by a factor of 2.89. The self-healing efficiency of the composite hydrogel gradually increased with the increase of SA, and the healing rate of FP5 reached 94.4% after 48 h of healing. This study provides a simple and rapid method for the preparation of composite hydrogels with good mechanical properties and self-healing properties.

Recent advances in adsorption of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks-based hydrogels

Water pollution is increasing significantly owing to industrialization and population growth that lead to serious environmental and health issues. Therefore, the design and development of more effective wastewater treatment approaches are necessary due to a significant upsurge in demand for freshwater. More recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in environmental science owing to their tunable porosity, unique structure, flexibility, and various composition. Despite these attractive advantages, some drawbacks, including intrinsic fragility, unsatisfied processability, dust formation, and poor reusability, have greatly limited their applications. Therefore, MOFs are often designed as supported-based MOFs (e.g., MOFs-coated composites) or 3D structured composites, such as MOFs-based hydrogels. MOFs-based hydrogels are excellent candidates in the sorption process because of their appropriate adsorption capacity, porous structure, good mechanical properties, durability as well as biodegradable features. In this review, the removal of different pollutants (e.g., synthetic dyes, phosphates, heavy metals, antibiotics, and some organic compounds) from aqueous media has been studied by the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels. The important advancements in the fabrication of MOFs-based hydrogels and their capacities in the adsorption of pollutants under experimental conditions have been discussed. Finally, problems and future perspectives on the adsorption process using MOFs-based hydrogels have been investigated.

Recent advances in MOF-bio-interface: a review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a class of promising material with adjustable function and controllable structure, have been widely used in the food industry, chemical industry, biological medicine, and sensors. Biomacromolecules and living systems play a critical role in the world. However, the insufficiency in stability, recyclability, and efficiency, significantly impedes their further utilization in slightly harsh conditions. MOF-bio-interface engineering effectively address the above-mentioned shortages of biomacromolecules and living systems, and thereby attracting considerable attentions. Herein, we systematically review the achievements in the area of MOF-bio-interface. In particular, we summarize the interface between MOFs and proteins (enzymes and non-enzymatic proteins), polysaccharides, DNA, cells, microbes, and viruses. Meanwhile, we discuss the limitations of this approach and propose future research directions. We expect that this review could provide new insights and inspire new research efforts towards life science and material science.

A Pitaya-Inspired Modular Cylindrical MOF-Based Capsule Design for Pesticide Signal Probes

Excessive use of pesticides has brought about serious environmental risks worldwide that pose significant harm for human health. Herein, a series of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gel capsules with a pitaya-like core-shell structure are constructed through a green polymerization strategy for pesticide detection and removal, namely ZIF-8/M-dbia/SA (M = Zn, Cd). Significantly, the ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsule exhibits sensitive detection of alachlor, a representative pre-emergence acetanilide pesticide, with a satisfactory detection limit of 0.23 μM. In addition, the MOF-based gel capsules can be extended to a universal visual platform for the noninvasive detection of pesticide residues with various MOFs, such as Eu-MOF, Tb-MOF, and Cu-MOF, and participating dye. Similar to pitaya, the ordered porous structure of MOF in ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsules offers cavity and open sites for removing pesticide from water with the maximum adsorption amount q_max of 61.1 mg·g^-1 toward alachlor in a Langmuir model. Thereby, this work presents the universality of gel capsule self-assembly technologies, including the well-preserved visible fluorescence area and porosity of the different structurally diverse MOFs, offering an ideal strategy for water decontamination and food safety control fields.

Polysaccharide-Based Composite Hydrogels as Sustainable Materials for Removal of Pollutants from Wastewater

Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.
