Abstract
AIM Sleep duration has been suggested to be associated with hypertension (HTN). However, evidence of the nature of the relationship and its direction has been inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between sleep duration and risk of HTN incidence, and to distinguish more susceptible populations. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest were searched from January 2000 to May 2023 for cohort studies comparing short and long sleep durations with 7-8 hours of sleep for the risk of HTN incidence. Random-effect model (the DerSimonian-Laird method) was applied to pool risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS We included sixteen studies ranging from 2.4 to 18 years of follow-up duration evaluating HTN incidence in 1,044,035 people. Short sleep duration was significantly associated with a higher risk of developing HTN (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.06-1.09). The association was stronger when the sleep duration was less than 5 hours (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.08-1.14). In contrast to males, females (HR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.04-1.09) were more vulnerable to developing HTN due to short sleep duration. No significant difference between different follow-up durations and age subgroups was observed. Long sleep duration was not associated with an increased incidence of HTN. CONCLUSION Short sleep duration was associated with higher risk of HTN incidence, however, there was no association between long sleep duration and incidence of HTN. These findings highlight the importance of implementing target-specific preventive and interventional strategies for vulnerable populations with short sleep duration to reduce the risk of HTN.

Abstract
Objective To examine associations of sleep duration and quality with cognitive impairment in older adults and the moderating role of gender and age in these associations. Methods This community-based cross-sectional study included 4,837 participants aged 60 years and above. Cognitive function was assessed using the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the participants were grouped based on the presence of cognitive impairment. The duration and quality of sleep were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze associations of sleep duration and quality with cognitive impairment. The role of age and gender in these associations have also been explored. Results The age (mean ± SD) of the participants was 71.13 ± 5.50 years. Of all older adults, 1,811 (37.44%) were detected as cognitive impairment, and 1755 (36.8%) had poor sleep quality. Among those with cognitive impairment, 51.09% were female. The proportion of the participants with cognitive impairment is significantly higher in those with symptoms of depression (49.73%, 273/549) (χ2 = 41.275, p < 0.001) than in those without depressive symptoms. After adjustment for multiple confounding factors and the crucial covariate (depressive symptoms), the odds ratios (OR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) of cognitive impairment (with 7-7.9 h regarded as the reference group) for individuals with a sleep duration of <6, 6-6.9, 8-8.9, and ≥ 9 h were 1.280 (1.053-1.557), 1.425 (1.175-1.728), 1.294 (1.068-1.566), and 1.360 (1.109-1.668), respectively. Subgroup analysis showed a V-shaped association between night sleep duration and cognitive impairment in males (p ≤ 0.05), and the association was stronger for individuals aged 60-80 years. With regard to sleep quality, the fully adjusted OR (95%CI) of cognitive impairment were 1.263 (1.108-1.440). According to scores of subscales in the PSQI, daytime dysfunction was associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment (OR: 1.128, 95%CI: 1.055-1.207). Subgroup analysis also revealed a statistically significant correlation between poor sleep quality (including daytime dysfunction) and cognitive impairment in different gender and age groups, with the association being stronger in females (OR: 1.287, 95%CI: 1.080-1.534) and those aged 81-97 years (OR: 2.128, 95%CI: 1.152-3.934). For cognitive impairment, the group aged 81-97 years with daytime dysfunction was associated with a higher odds ratio than other age groups. Conclusion The present study showed that inadequate or excessive sleep was associated with cognitive impairment, especially in males, who exhibited a V-shaped association. Cognitive impairment was also associated with poor sleep quality as well as daytime dysfunction, with females and individuals aged 81-97 years exhibiting the strongest association.

Abstract
The objective is to evaluate the influence of sleep and chrononutrition on hypertension and diabetes in the adult population (18 years or older) in a municipality in Southern Brazil. This is a population-based cross-sectional study, developed in Criciúma, State of Santa Catarina, in 2019. The exposure variables were sleep duration and quality, and two of the main aspects of chrononutrition, the number of daily meals and the presence of breakfast. The outcomes studied were diabetes mellitus and systemic arterial hypertension. Crude and adjusted Poisson regression with robust variance was used to evaluate the associations between exposures and outcomes. For all analyses, the effect of the sample design was considered, and the significance level adopted was 5%. In total, 820 patients were evaluated. The prevalence of diabetes and hypertension was of 19.9% and 44.1%, respectively. Individuals with worse sleep quality had a higher prevalence of 33% for diabetes and 17% for hypertension, compared to those with good quality of sleep. Those who had four or more meals per day had a 16% lower prevalence of hypertension, when compared to those who had less than four meals. We concluded that the quality of sleep and the number of daily meals, a feeding behavior related to chrononutrition, were related to hypertension and diabetes. These results highlight the importance of public health actions that address new strategies for coping with these diseases focused on sleep quality and chrononutrition.

Abstract
Introduction
Sleep plays an essential role in every individual’s life since it contributes greatly to their well-being and health. Poor sleep quality is one of the most common consequences of hypertension (HTN), which is a leading public health problem. In Ethiopia, it is the main health concern among hypertension patients. Thus, in the study area, there is limited information regarding the investigation of sleep quality among hypertension patients. Therefore, this study aimed to assess sleep quality and associated factors among adult hypertensive patients attending a chronic follow up care clinic in northwest Amhara regional state referral hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia.
Methods
An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among adult HTN patients from March 15/2021 to May 15/2021 in Northwest Amhara Regional State Referral Hospitals. A systematic random sampling method was used to select the study participants. A face-to-face interviewer-administered questionnaire with chart review was used. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for assessing sleep quality was used in this study. A binary logistic regression was used to see the association between dependent and independent variables. Variables having a p-value < 0.05 with a 95% CI were considered statistically significant in the multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Results
In this study, 563 hypertensive patients were included, with a response rate of 96.9%. The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 37.7% (95% CI: 33.4%–41.6%). Female gender (AOR = 2.55, 95% CI: 1.55–4.18), age ≥ 65 years (AOR = 4.07, 95% CI: 2.07–7.97), overweight (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 (AOR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.06–2.65), WHO stage II hypertension (AOR = 1.78, 95% CI:1.01–3.12), poor physical activity (AOR = 2.39, 95% CI:1.41–4.05), participants who had depression (AOR = 2.03,95% CI:1.24–3.34) and participants who had anxiety (AOR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.16–3.03) were factors associated with poor sleep quality.
Conclusions
In this study, more than one-third of the study participants had poor sleep quality. Female gender, age ≥ 65 years, overweight (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2, stage II hypertension, physical inactivity, depression, and anxiety were all associated with poor sleep quality. Managing depression and anxiety disorders, encouraging physical activity, and providing health education about weight loss are all necessary for HTN patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study was conducted to evaluate the independent dose-response of the night sleep duration and sleep initiation time on hypertension, and to explore their combined effect with hypertension. METHODS Participants from the Henan Rural Cohort were enrolled in this study. Information on sleep was collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure/diastolic blood pressure ≥140/90 mmHg or self-reported hypertension and current use of anti-hypertensive medicines. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline were conducted to evaluate the association of night sleep duration and sleep initiation time with hypertension. RESULTS Of the 37 317 included participants, 12 333 suffered from hypertension. 14 474 (38.79%) were men and 22 843 (61.21%) were women, the mean age were 57.18 ± 12.10 and 55.24 ± 11.98 in men and women. Compared to reference (7-h), fully adjusted odd ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of hypertension were 0.91 (0.66-1.25) in <5 h group and 1.74 (1.41-2.16) in ≥10 h among men, respectively. Fully adjusted ORs (95% CIs) for hypertension compared with reference (21:00-22:00) were 1.05 (95% CI 0.78-1.41) in the <20:00 group, 1.52 (1.25-1.85) in ≥24:00 in men. The combined effect of sleep duration and sleep initiation time on hypertension were statistically significant in the category of (≥8 h)/night and ≥24:00 (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.07-3.25) compared to reference in fully adjusted model among men. CONCLUSIONS Long night sleep duration and late sleep initiation time were associated with the higher odds of hypertension, and the sleep duration and sleep initiation time might cumulatively increase the prevalence of hypertension in men. Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to explore sleep status and hypertension among oil workers in Xinjiang, China. It may provide new ideas and basis for the precise prevention and treatment of hypertension in occupational population. Methods Sleep status and hypertension were investigated in 3,040 workers by a multi-stage cluster sampling method in six oil field bases in Karamay City, Xinjiang. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to evaluate the sleep status of workers. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality, and hypertension. Stratified analysis was also performed. Results Our results show: 1. Insufficient sleep duration (OR = 1.51, 95% CI [1.19–1.90]) and poor sleep quality (OR = 1.78, 95% CI [1.33–2.38] were positively associated with hypertension. 2. Stratified analysis indicated insufficient sleep duration was associated with increased risk of hypertension in females (OR = 1.54, 95% CI [1.16–2.04]) than males (OR = 1.49, 95% CI [1.00–2.23]), and the risk of hypertension in the group <30 years old (OR = 9.03, 95% CI [2.32–35.15]) was higher than that in the group of 30–45 years old (OR = 1.59, 95% CI [1.14–2.20]). However, in the group > 45 years old, sleeping > 8 h was associated with increased risk of hypertension (OR = 3.36, 95% CI [1.42–7.91]). Oil workers doing shift work had a higher risk of hypertension (OR = 1.55, 95% CI [1.16–2.07]) to no shift work (OR = 1.48, 95% CI [1.02–2.15]). The risk of hypertension in the group with < 10 years of service (OR = 4.08, 95% CI [1.92–8.83]) was higher than that in the group with length of service of 10–20 years (OR = 2.79, 95% CI [1.59–4.86]). Poor sleep quality was associated with risk for hypertension in females (OR = 1.78, 95% CI [1.26–2.49]), those doing shift work (OR = 1.70, 95% CI [1.17–2.47]), those with length of service of > 20 years (OR = 1.64, 95% CI [1.18–2.27]). The risk of hypertension in the group 30–45 years old is higher than that in the group > 45 years old (OR30–45 years old = 1.71, 95% CI [1.10–2.66]; OR > 45 years old = 1.60, 95% CI [1.09–2.34]). Conclusion Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are the potential factors affecting hypertension in Xinjiang oil workers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The role of sleep duration in the development of hypertension remains controversial. Little is known about the combined effects of nocturnal and daytime sleep. We assessed the association between total sleep duration and the development of hypertension in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data were obtained from 3 waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study surveys. Middle-aged and elderly Chinese initially without hypertension were followed biennially from 2011 to 2015. Sleep duration was self-reported. Hypertension was defined as a systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 (mmHg), the current use of anti-hypertensive medications or self-reported hypertension. RESULTS Over 31,392 person-years of follow-up, 2682 of 10,176 participants developed hypertension. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (HR) (95% confidence intervals, 95% CI) for the development of hypertension between those with 0-30 minutes and ≥30 minutes daytime sleep vs those without daytime sleep were 0.67 (0.58, 0.77), and 0.73 (0.59, 0.92), respectively. The protective role of longer periods of daytime sleep (>30 minutes) varied between different subgroups. Compared with moderate nocturnal sleepers, long nocturnal sleepers (HR: 1.66, 95% CI=1.25-2.21) had an increased risk of hypertension. Compared with moderate nocturnal sleepers without daytime sleep, HRs (95% CI) for hypertension were 0.52 (0.45, 0.59) for short nocturnal sleep plus short daytime sleep and 0.55 (0.49, 0.62) for short nocturnal sleep plus long daytime sleep. People with extremely short (HR: 1.34, 95% CI=1.22-1.48) and long (HR: 1.28, 95% CI=1.13-1.44) combined sleep periods had an increased risk of hypertension. Consistent results were also found in subgroups stratified by age and gender. CONCLUSION Both extremely long and short total sleep periods were associated with an increased risk of hypertension. People with short or moderate nocturnal sleep durations, especially short nocturnal sleep duration, can benefit from habitual daytime sleep to prevent hypertension.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing evidence suggested that sleep duration may be involved in hypertension; however, the conclusions were still controversial. This study aimed to examine the association of longitudinal trajectory of sleep duration with hypertension and to explore the role of the inflammation in such associations. METHODS A total of 3178 subjects over 30 years of age without hypertension were enrolled in 2004, and they were followed until 2009. Self-reported sleep duration was recorded, and inflammation was measured by highly sensitive C reactive protein (hs-CRP). Log-binomial regression models were applied to examine the association of sleep duration trajectory and inflammation with the risk of hypertension. The mediating effect of elevated hs-CRP was examined by the bootstrap and the process software. RESULTS The prevalence of persistent short (≤7 hours/day), normal (8-9 hours/day), and long (>9 hours/day) sleep duration over 5 years were 9.1%, 37.7%, and 2.3%, respectively. The incidence of hypertension was 26.6% during the follow-up period. Compared with those who persistently slept 8-9 hours/day from baseline to follow-up, those who persistently slept ≤7 hours/day, persistently slept ≥10 hours/day, and those whose sleep duration changed have higher risks of hypertension by 1.375-fold (95% CI: 1.121, 1.686), 1.557-fold (95% CI: 1.171, 2.069) and 1.299-fold (95% CI: 1.135, 1.487), respectively. In addition, persistently slept ≤7 hours/day was found to be associated with higher risk of inflammation (RR: 1.285, 95% CI: 1.008, 1.638). The mediation analysis did not find significant mediating effect of elevated CRP on the association between sleep duration trajectory and hypertension. CONCLUSION Experiencing both a short or long sleep duration, especially for a long time, could lead to higher risk of hypertension. Persistent exposure to short sleep duration was also associated with inflammation. However, the higher risk of hypertension caused by persistent short sleep duration does not seem to be directly mediated through inflammation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship of subjective sleep quality with blood pressure (BP) and hypertension by considering the influence of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and age in the general population. METHODS We evaluated sleep quality using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and SDB using NoSAS score and measured BP in randomly selected adults in China in 2019. Sleep quality is categorized into four groups as very good, fairly good, fairly bad and very bad. SDB is defined as NoSAS score ≥8. Hypertension is defined as systolic BP ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg, and/or use of antihypertensive medicine within previous 2 weeks. Multi-variable linear and logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association of global PSQI score and sleep quality with BP and prevalent hypertension. RESULTS In the 33,341 participants (53.4% women, median age: 48 years), prevalence of hypertension significantly increased from very good to very bad sleepers in total (34.3 vs 42.6 vs 50.3 vs 58.5%), SDB (61.2 vs 68.3 vs 73.3 vs 75.5%) and non-SDB participants (26.8 vs 33.1 vs 40.1 vs 50.9%). In multiple linear regression, PSQI global score showed significant positive association with BP levels in total, SDB and non-SDB participants, consistent in sensitivity analysis by excluding participants who were taking antihypertensives, and in participants aged <60 years in age-stratified analysis. In multivariable logistic regression, odds ratio for presence of hypertension significantly increased from very good to very bad sleepers in total (1 vs 1.08 vs 1.22 vs 1.48), SDB (1 vs 1.17 vs 1.35 vs 1.28) and non-SDB participants (1 vs 1.05 vs 1.14 vs 1.53), consistent in participants aged <60 years. CONCLUSION Poor subjective sleep quality is significantly associated with higher BP and prevalent hypertension, independent of SDB in the young- and middle-aged general population, indicating potential of improving sleep quality to lower BP and optimize hypertension management at population level.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the association of self-reported nighttime sleep duration and daytime napping duration with hypertension in rural areas of China. The participants, who were from rural areas of Hunan Province in China, were enrolled during 2016-2017. Nighttime sleep duration (<7 h, 7-8 h, and ≥9 h) and daytime napping duration(no nap, 0-1 h, and >1 h) were determined by a self-reported questionnaire. Hypertension was defined as a mean systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or a mean diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg or a self-reported physician diagnosis of hypertension and current use of antihypertensive medication. Of 1763 enrolled participants, 52% had hypertension. A total of 640 (36%) were male and 1123 (64%) were female; the mean age was 56 years. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants who slept for ≥9 h per night had a 1.29-fold (95% CI: 1.03, 1.60) increased odds of hypertension compared to the reference group (7-8 h per night). Daytime napping >1 h was negatively associated with hypertension, with an adjusted OR (95% CI) of 0.70 (0.51, 0.97), and the protective effect of longer daytime napping was still found in the subgroup sleeping 7-8 h per night. Among the rural population in China, long nighttime sleep duration is associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension, and longer daytime napping is related to a decreased prevalence of hypertension.

Abstract
Background: Obesity is an important risk factor for hypertension. Previous studies have explored the association between body fat percentage (BFP) and hypertension, but evidence on the consistency of the association remains uncertain and limited. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between BFP and hypertension in a Chinese rural population. Methods: The present cross-sectional study including 38,913 eligible individuals was conducted in rural areas of Henan province. BFP was measured by bioelectrical impedance methods using Omron body fat and weight measurement device. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline regression models were performed to investigate the relationship between BFP and hypertension. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to compare the discriminating power of adiposity indices. Results: The age-standard prevalence of hypertension was 23.74 and 17.87% in males and females, respectively. Compared with the first quartile of BFP, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension in the highest BFP quartile were 3.30 (95% CI: 2.85, 3.83) in males and 2.66 (95% CI: 2.36, 2.99) in females, and the adjusted ORs increased along with increasing BFP levels. The areas under ROC and 95% CIs of BFP were 0.673 (0.665, 0.682) in males and 0.696 (0.689, 0.703) in females, respectively. Conclusions: BFP was significantly positively associated with the prevalence of hypertension in both males and females in the Chinese rural population. The association between allergic rhinitis and sleep: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. PLoS One 2020; 15:e0228533. Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the associations of allergic rhinitis with sleep duration and sleep impairment. Observational studies published before August 2019 were obtained through English language literature searches in the PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL databases. Mean differences and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were extracted and used for meta-analysis. Heterogeneity was confirmed by the I2-heterogeneity test. Subgroup analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of study design. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach was used to determine the level of evidence. In total, 2544 records were identified through database searches; 914 duplicate records were excluded, 1452 records were removed after screening of titles and abstracts, 151 records were excluded after full-text screening, and 27 articles were included in the final meta-analyses. A total of 240,706,026 patients (19,444,043 with allergic rhinitis) were considered. No significant difference in sleep duration between the allergic rhinitis and the control groups was found. Patients with allergic rhinitis presented with significantly higher sleep quality scores, sleep disturbances scores, and sleep latency scores; more frequent use of sleep medications; and lower sleep efficiency as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and polysomnography. Meta-analyses for adjusted odds ratios showed that allergic rhinitis was also associated with higher risks of nocturnal dysfunctions, including insomnia, nocturnal enuresis, restless sleep, sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, and snoring. Meta-analysis for adjusted odds ratio also showed that allergic rhinitis was associated with daytime dysfunction, including difficulty waking up, daytime sleepiness, morning headache, and the use of sleep medications. The overall quality of evidence ranged from low to very low, indicating that caution is required when interpreting these results. This study demonstrates that there is a significant association of AR with sleep characteristics.

Abstract
This study investigated the associations of baseline sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, longest wake episode, number of awakenings, sleep efficiency and sleep duration with incident hypertension during a 7-year follow-up (n = 161, 68% men) and the joint effect of insufficient sleep and obesity on incident hypertension. Sleep parameters were derived from 15-day actigraphy data. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using a robust Poisson regression model. Each 10-min increase in sleep onset latency was associated with an 89% higher risk of hypertension (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.12-3.20). Each 10-min increase in longest wake episode was associated with a 23% higher risk of hypertension (95% CI = 1.01-1.50) and each 10% decrease in sleep efficiency was associated with a 50% higher risk of hypertension (95% CI = 1.02-2.22). These associations were independent of demographic and lifestyle characteristics, depressive symptoms, shift work, sleep duration and body mass index. Having <6 hr of sleep and a body mass index ≥30 kg/m2 increased the risk of hypertension (relative risk = 2.81; 95% CI = 1.26-6.25) compared with having ≥6 hr of sleep and a body mass index <30 after controlling for confounders. Relative excess risk due to interaction was 3.49 (95% CI = -1.69-8.68) and ratio of relative risk was 3.21 (95% CI = 0.72-14.26). These results suggest that poor sleep quality is a risk factor for hypertension. Longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to examine the joint effect of insufficient sleep and obesity on development of hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship among sleep quality, sleep duration and hypertension prevalence is controversial in different age groups and genders. This study aimed to investigate sleep quality, sleep duration and their association with hypertension prevalence among low-income oldest-old in a rural area of China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a representative sample of 1066 adults aged 80-99 years in 2017. Logistic regression analysis was performed. RESULTS Among males, sleep durations of <6 h and 6-<7 h were significantly associated with hypertension prevalence, with odds ratios (ORs) of 3.15 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.37 to 7.23) and 2.38 (95% CI 1.22 to 4.63), respectively. Among females, only the sleep duration of <6 h was associated with increased OR of hypertension of 3.49 (95% CI 1.50 to 8.09). Poor sleep quality was associated with hypertension for both genders (ORmen 1.67, 95% CI 1.12 to 2.49; ORwomen 1.91, 95% CI 1.29 to 2.82). For women, a combination of poor sleep quality and any group of sleep duration, except for 7-<8 h, was associated with higher hypertension prevalence. For men, only the combination of poor sleep quality and short sleep duration (<7 h) was associated with high hypertension prevalence. CONCLUSION Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are associated with hypertension prevalence of oldest-old. The prevention of hypertension in older adults should be investigated from the perspective of sleep improvement.

Abstract
Aims This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sleep duration, sleep quality and hyperlipidemia in middle-aged and older Chinese. Methods We included 20,712 individuals at baseline from September 2008 to June 2010, and they were followed-up until October 2013. Hyperlipidemia was defined according to the Chinese guidelines on the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia in adults. Sleep duration was self-reported and sleep quality was evaluated with a questionnaire that was designed according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard models were conducted to explore the associations. Results In the cross-sectional analyses, longer sleep duration (≥10 h) was significantly associated with higher prevalence of hyperlipidemia (odds ratio (OR) = 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02–1.35) after adjusting for potential confounders. The ORs of hyperlipidemia were significantly elevated among participants with impaired sleep quality (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.08–1.22) and poor sleep quality (OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.08–1.34) when compared to those with good sleep quality. In the longitudinal analyses, compared to participants with a sleep duration of 7–<8 h, those with a sleep duration of 9–<10 h (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.04–1.35) and ≥10 h (HR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.02–1.58) showed significantly higher risk of hyperlipidemia after adjusting for potential confounders. However, no statistically significant association was found between impaired or poor sleep quality and hyperlipidemia. Conclusions Longer sleep duration was significantly associated with higher risk of hyperlipidemia. Impaired or poor sleep quality were associated with elevated prevalence of hyperlipidemia, but not with the incidence of hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a relationship between night sleep duration and hypertension, and to evaluate as to whether blood lipid levels played a role in this relationship. A total of 37,317 participants aged 18-79 years were included in this study. Night sleep duration was classified as <5, 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, and ≥10 hours. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis was carried out to evaluate the association of sleep duration with hypertension. Compared with reference sleep duration (7 hours), in males, the multivariate odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence interval [95% CI]) of the groups with longest sleep duration (≥10 hours) and shortest sleep duration (<5 hours) for hypertension was 1.52 (1.25-1.84) and 1.07 (0.80-1.44), respectively. Similarly, the longest sleep duration was associated with diagnosed hypertension (1.21, 1.00-1.45) in females. The OR for an indirect effect of sleep duration through low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) on hypertension was 1.085 (95% CI 1.038-1.137). Overall, a 3.5% possibility of hypertension being associated with sleep duration was attributable to LDL-C. In summary, a relationship between sleep duration and hypertension was observed in this rural population. LDL-C appeared to partially mediate the effect of sleep duration on hypertension in males.
