Label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on conductive Ag contained EMT-style nano-zeolites and the application for α-fetoprotein detection

Enhancing Electrochemical Non-Enzymatic Dopamine Sensing Based on Bimetallic Nickel/Cobalt Phosphide Nanosheets

In this study, the successful synthesis of bimetallic nickel/cobalt phosphide nanosheets (Ni-Co-P NSs) via the hydrothermal method and the subsequent high-temperature phosphorization process were both confirmed. Ni-Co-P NSs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the electrochemical non-enzymatic DA sensing. The surface morphologies and physicochemical properties of Ni-Co-P NSs were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field-emission scanning (FESEM), field-emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Further, the electrochemical performance was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The metallic nature of phosphide and the synergistic effect of Ni/Co atoms in Ni-Co-P NSs provided abundant catalytic active sites for the electrochemical redox reaction of DA, which exhibited a remarkable consequence with a wide linear range from 0.3~50 μM, a high sensitivity of 2.033 µA µM-1 cm-2, a low limit of detection of 0.016 µM, and anti-interference ability. As a result, the proposed Ni-Co-P NSs can be considered an ideal electrode material for the electrochemical non-enzymatic DA sensing.

Coral-like, self-assembled, and spatially bounded Ag nano-particles on franzinite zeolite composite sensor toward accurate, synergetic, and ultra-trace sulfadiazine detection

A coral-like Ag@FRA zeolite nanocomposite sensor reveals high sensitivity toward sulfadiazine (SDZ) in a dual detection of fluorescence and electrochemistry. The sensor has been as-synthesized in the hydrothermal condition through a one-pot self-assembly process in which the high crystalline Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are closely arranged and stacked on the nanosized surface cage window of the FRA (Franzinite) zeolite. Strong ultrasound can drive the coral-like composite release Ag nanoparticles whose distribution range mainly from 10 to 12 nm lead to the purple fluorescence in an emission spectrum. In sea water, the fluorescence increases linearly in the SDZ concentration range of 5 × 10-18-5 × 10-10 M. Furthermore, the LOD (limit of detection) reaches 1.4 × 10-22 M by the spatial confinement effect of the coral-liked FRA cage structure in CV (cyclic voltammetry) method at the characteristic potential peak position of 0.1 V vs. SCE. The theoretical calculation also confirms that the FRA cage structure matches well with the SDZ molecules. Further studies indicate the generation of a novel stable composite sensor with high specificity, good recovery and repeatability, which depends on the induction of silver ions upon the artificial synthesis of FRA.

An electrochemical immunosensor for an alpha-fetoprotein cancer biomarker on a carbon black/palladium hybrid nanoparticles platform

The early detection of cancer is a key step in cancer survival. Thus, there is a need to develop low-cost technologies, such as electrochemical immunosensor technologies, for timely screening and diagnostics. The discovery of alpha-feto protein (AFP) as a tumour-associated antigen lends AFP as a biomarker for cancer detection and monitoring. Thus, immunosensors can be developed to target AFP in cancer diagnostics. Hence, we report the application of a hybrid nanocomposite of carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) and palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) as a platform for the electrochemical immunosensing of cancer biomarkers. The hybrid carbon-metal nanomaterials were immobilised by using the drop-drying and electrodeposition technique on a glassy carbon electrode, followed by the immobilisation of the anti-AFP to fabricate an immunosensor. The nanoparticles were characterised with electron microscopy, voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Square wave voltammetry (SWV) and EIS were used to study the immunosensor signal toward the bio-recognition of the AFP cancer biomarker. The hybrid nanoparticles enhanced the immunosensor performance. A linear detection range from 0.005 to 1000 ng mL^-1 with low detection limits of 0.0039 ng mL^-1 and 0.0131 ng mL^-1 were calculated for SWV and EIS, respectively. The immunosensor demonstrated good stability, reproducibility, and selectivity. Its real-life application potential was tested with detection in human serum matrix.

ZnO/Cu2O heterojunction integrated fiber-optic biosensor for remote detection of cysteine

Indium tin oxide, semiconductor nanomaterial ZnO, and Cu₂O were first loaded on the surface of the optical fiber to form an optical fiber probe. Large-volume macroscopic spatial light is replaced by an optical fiber path, and remote light injection is implemented. Based on the optical fiber probe, a photoelectrochemical biosensor was constructed and remote detection of cysteine was realized. In this tiny device, the optical fiber probe not only acts as a working electrode to react with the analyte but also directs the light exactly where it is needed. Simultaneously, the electrochemical behavior of cysteine on the surface of the working electrode is dominated by diffusion-control, which provides strong support for quantitative detection. Then, under the bias potential of 0 V, the linear range of the fiber-optic-based cysteine biosensor was 0.01∼1 μM, the regression coefficient (R²) value was 0.9943. In spiked synthetic urine, the detection of cysteine was also realized by the integrated biosensor. Moreover, benefiting from the low optical fiber loss, the new structure also possesses a unique remote detection function. This work confirms that photoelectrochemical biosensors can be integrated via optical fibers and retain comparable sensing performance. Based on this property, different materials can also be loaded on the surface of the optical fiber for remote detection of other analytes. It is expected to facilitate the research on fiber-optic-based integrated biosensors and show application prospects in diverse fields such as biochemical analysis and disease diagnosis.

Optically Active Nanomaterials and Its Biosensing Applications-A Review

This article discusses optically active nanomaterials and their optical biosensing applications. In addition to enhancing their sensitivity, these nanomaterials also increase their biocompatibility. For this reason, nanomaterials, particularly those based on their chemical compositions, such as carbon-based nanomaterials, inorganic-based nanomaterials, organic-based nanomaterials, and composite-based nanomaterials for biosensing applications are investigated thoroughly. These nanomaterials are used extensively in the field of fiber optic biosensing to improve response time, detection limit, and nature of specificity. Consequently, this article describes contemporary and application-based research that will be of great use to researchers in the nanomaterial-based optical sensing field. The difficulties encountered during the synthesis, characterization, and application of nanomaterials are also enumerated, and their future prospects are outlined for the reader's benefit.

Fluorescence sensing strategy based on aptamer recognition and mismatched catalytic hairpin assembly for highly sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein

At present, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is mainly used as a serum marker of primary Hepatocellular carcinoma. A simple, enzyme-free sensing strategy is introduced for highly sensitive fluorescence detection of AFP. This detection strategy is based on aptamer recognition and mismatched catalytic hairpin assembly (MCHA). At first, Trigger is locked by aptamer before the introduction of AFP in this aptamer-MCHA system. The aptamer preferentially combines with AFP via powerful attraction in the presence of AFP. This results in the release of trigger and initiation of MCHA cycle, thus forming the H1 and H2 double chain complexes (denoted as H1@H2). Finally, H1@H2 and double chain structure containing fluorophore and its quenched group- BHQ1 (denoted as F@Q) initiated displacement reaction, which caused double chain separation and fluorescence recovery. This assay produces a wide detection range, which is from 0.1 ng mL^-1 to 10 μg mL^-1 and the limit of detection as 0.033 ng mL^-1. The whole detection process was performed at 37 °C for 60 min. In addition, this assay had high anti-interference ability and could be used to detect AFP in clinical serum. This novel AFP detection strategy is able to screen of Hepatocellular carcinoma.

Microporous Frameworks as Promising Platforms for Antibacterial Strategies Against Oral Diseases

Nowadays, the heavy burden of oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis, endodontic infections, etc., and their consequences on the patients' quality of life indicate a strong need for developing effective therapies. Bacterial infections played an important role in the field of oral diseases, in-depth insight of such oral diseases have given rise to the demand for antibacterial therapeutic strategies. Recently, microporous frameworks have attracted tremendous interest in antibacterial application due to their well-defined porous structures for drug delivery. In addition, intensive efforts have been made to enhance the antibacterial performance of microporous frameworks, such as ion doping, photosensitizer incorporation as building blocks, and surface modifications. This review article aims on the major recent developments of microporous frameworks for antibacterial applications against oral diseases. The first part of this paper puts concentration on the cutting-edge researches on the versatile antibacterial strategies of microporous materials via drug delivery, inherent activity, and structural modification. The second part discusses the antibacterial applications of microporous frameworks against oral diseases. The applications of microporous frameworks not only have promising therapeutic potential to inhibit bacterial plaque-initiated oral infectious diseases, but also have a wide applicability to other biomedical applications.

Poly(azomethine-urethane) and zeolite-based composite: Fluorescent biosensor for DNA detection

In the present paper, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent biosensor based on poly(azomethine-urethane) and zeolite for the determination of DNA molecules was developed. Zeolite was chosen to enhance with anionic or cationic functional groups in polymer matrix and interaction between polymer and DNA. Several parameters such as polymer concentration, pH and incubation time effect on the sensitivity of the fluorescent biosensor were optimized. Linear range was determined between 2.50 and 25.00 nmol/L DNA concentration and limit of detection (LOD) of the biosensor was calculated as 0.095 nmol/L under the optimal conditions. Interference study was also performed in the presence of different amino acids, cations and organic compounds. The results clearly indicated that the tested cations and compounds were not induced a significant fluorescence change and the proposed zeolite-based biosensor was shown a good selectivity for DNA.
