‘Running hot’: Placing health in the life and course of the vital city

It's about time: on the need of a temporal language for ecologically dimensioned medical humanities and public health scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted multiple system dependencies that urge us to rethink our relationship with other humans, non-humans and their various environments. Whereas a growing body of literature highlights the need for ecologically dimensioned medical humanities, focusing on where and how our healths unfold relationally through their ecologies, this paper argues that little attention has been paid to the when of health. In reply, this paper sets out to expand this understanding, first by grounding the ecological argument for medical humanities in a wider net of relational ontologies, and second by highlighting the need to think temporally, specifically multitemporally, about the relationalities of health. The paper advances the sociological concepts of 'time' and 'temporalities' to help us think about various tempi, rhythms, urgencies and legacies of how health unfolds unevenly into the future.

What's in it for the animals? Symbiotically considering 'therapeutic' human-animal relations within spaces and practices of care farming

Human-animal relations are increasingly imbricated, encountered and experienced in the production of medicine and health. Drawing on an empirical study of care farms in the UK, this article uses the language of symbiosis to develop a framework for critically considering the relationships enrolled within interspecies therapeutic practices. Care farming is an emerging paradigm that aims to deploy farming practices as a form of therapeutic intervention, with human-animal relations framed as providing important opportunities for human health. This article moves to attend to multispecies therapeutic interventions and relationships from a more-than-human perspective, drawing attention to the often-troubling anthropocentrism in which such practices are framed and performed. Attempting to perform and realise human imaginations of 'therapeutic' affects, spaces and relationships can rely on processes that reduce animals' own opportunities for flourishing. Yet, the therapeutic use of other species does not have to be forever anthropocentric or utilitarian. The article explores whether relations between humans and animals might result in a level of mutual proliferation of affective capacities, reciprocally beneficial. These human-animal entanglements highlight opportunities to think more critically about how to practice interspecies relationships and practices in ways that are less parasitic, and instead framed more by attempts at producing opportunities for mutualistic flourishing.

Urban air pollution perception through the experience of social practices: Talking about breathing with recreational runners in London

This paper examines how interviews with outdoor recreational runners can help us understand how urban air pollution insinuates itself into the consciousness of those who may be breathing more polluted air than most. It begins by making the case for why studies of air pollution perception might turn to the subjectivities associated with taking part in relevant social practices. Then, with reference to debate about the extent to which groups of exercisers are thinking about certain aspects of what is physically happening during their exercise, we examine how outdoor recreational runners in London talk about the air that they breathe when running. We might imagine that this group would be particularly alive to urban air pollution in view of a presumed interest in physical performance and a personal history of running through various bodies of city air. However, through close scrutiny of their running talk, this paper documents how and why the suggestion of breathing polluted air is often placed beyond the realm of conscious thought for them during their runs. These findings point to particular strategies for encouraging healthy urban lifestyles and illustrate the potential of further studies on how social practices shape pollution perceptions.

The daycourse of place

The present paper aims to contribute to the debate about the temporal relationships between place and health. It explores the notion of 'daycourse of place' echoing the discussion which recently occurred in this journal about the 'lifecourse of place' (Andrews, 2017; Lekkas et al., 2017a, b). When highlighting the importance of time in shaping health within places, most of studies focus either on the trajectories of places over a matter of years or the daily trajectories of people in link with their activity space. However, daily trajectories of places remain a poor cousin in place and health literature. This paper is intended to overcome 'jetlag', which places suffer when they are labelled with frozen attributes over a 24-h period. It explores the values and feasibility of exploring daily trajectories of places to investigate place effects on health or to design area-based interventions for public health action. More than just a metaphor, the 'daycourse of place' appears to be an inspiring framework to elaborate the importance of daily temporal relationalities for research and action in place-based health inequalities.
