A Survey on Deep Transfer Learning to Edge Computing for Mitigating the COVID-19 Pandemic

Machine and deep learning methods for clinical outcome prediction based on physiological data of COVID-19 patients: a scoping review

INTRODUCTION

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous machine and deep learning (MDL) methods have been proposed in the literature to analyze patient physiological data. The objective of this review is to summarize various aspects of these methods and assess their practical utility for predicting various clinical outcomes.

METHODS

We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library, screened and selected the studies matching the inclusion criteria. The clinical analysis focused on the characteristics of the patient cohorts in the studies included in this review, the specific tasks in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic that machine and deep learning methods were used for, and their practical limitations. The technical analysis focused on the details of specific MDL methods and their performance.

RESULTS

Analysis of the 48 selected studies revealed that the majority (∼54 %) of them examined the application of MDL methods for the prediction of survival/mortality-related patient outcomes, while a smaller fraction (∼13 %) of studies also examined applications to the prediction of patients' physiological outcomes and hospital resource utilization. 21 % of the studies examined the application of MDL methods to multiple clinical tasks. Machine and deep learning methods have been shown to be effective at predicting several outcomes of COVID-19 patients, such as disease severity, complications, intensive care unit (ICU) transfer, and mortality. MDL methods also achieved high accuracy in predicting the required number of ICU beds and ventilators.

CONCLUSION

Machine and deep learning methods have been shown to be valuable tools for predicting disease severity, organ dysfunction and failure, patient outcomes, and hospital resource utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discovered knowledge and our conclusions and recommendations can also be useful to healthcare professionals and artificial intelligence researchers in managing future pandemics.

A survey of machine learning-based methods for COVID-19 medical image analysis

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has already resulted in 6.6 million deaths with more than 637 million people infected after only 30 months since the first occurrences of the disease in December 2019. Hence, rapid and accurate detection and diagnosis of the disease is the first priority all over the world. Researchers have been working on various methods for COVID-19 detection and as the disease infects lungs, lung image analysis has become a popular research area for detecting the presence of the disease. Medical images from chest X-rays (CXR), computed tomography (CT) images, and lung ultrasound images have been used by automated image analysis systems in artificial intelligence (AI)- and machine learning (ML)-based approaches. Various existing and novel ML, deep learning (DL), transfer learning (TL), and hybrid models have been applied for detecting and classifying COVID-19, segmentation of infected regions, assessing the severity, and tracking patient progress from medical images of COVID-19 patients. In this paper, a comprehensive review of some recent approaches on COVID-19-based image analyses is provided surveying the contributions of existing research efforts, the available image datasets, and the performance metrics used in recent works. The challenges and future research scopes to address the progress of the fight against COVID-19 from the AI perspective are also discussed. The main objective of this paper is therefore to provide a summary of the research works done in COVID detection and analysis from medical image datasets using ML, DL, and TL models by analyzing their novelty and efficiency while mentioning other COVID-19-based review/survey researches to deliver a brief overview on the maximum amount of information on COVID-19-based existing researches.

A Survey on Optimization Techniques for Edge Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (Al) models are being produced and used to solve a variety of current and future business and technical problems. Therefore, AI model engineering processes, platforms, and products are acquiring special significance across industry verticals. For achieving deeper automation, the number of data features being used while generating highly promising and productive AI models is numerous, and hence the resulting AI models are bulky. Such heavyweight models consume a lot of computation, storage, networking, and energy resources. On the other side, increasingly, AI models are being deployed in IoT devices to ensure real-time knowledge discovery and dissemination. Real-time insights are of paramount importance in producing and releasing real-time and intelligent services and applications. Thus, edge intelligence through on-device data processing has laid down a stimulating foundation for real-time intelligent enterprises and environments. With these emerging requirements, the focus turned towards unearthing competent and cognitive techniques for maximally compressing huge AI models without sacrificing AI model performance. Therefore, AI researchers have come up with a number of powerful optimization techniques and tools to optimize AI models. This paper is to dig deep and describe all kinds of model optimization at different levels and layers. Having learned the optimization methods, this work has highlighted the importance of having an enabling AI model optimization framework.

The development of new remote technologies in disaster medicine education: A scoping review

Background

Remote teaching and online learning have significantly changed the responsiveness and accessibility after the COVID-19 pandemic. Disaster medicine (DM) has recently gained prominence as a critical issue due to the high frequency of worldwide disasters, especially in 2021. The new artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced technologies and concepts have recently progressed in DM education.

Objectives

The aim of this article is to familiarize the reader with the remote technologies that have been developed and used in DM education over the past 20 years.

Literature scoping reviews

Mobile edge computing (MEC), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)/drones, deep learning (DL), and visual reality stimulation, e.g., head-mounted display (HMD), are selected as promising and inspiring designs in DM education.

Methods

We performed a comprehensive review of the literature on the remote technologies applied in DM pedagogy for medical, nursing, and social work, as well as other health discipline students, e.g., paramedics. Databases including PubMed (MEDLINE), ISI Web of Science (WOS), EBSCO (EBSCO Essentials), Embase (EMB), and Scopus were used. The sourced results were recorded in a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart and followed in accordance with the PRISMA extension Scoping Review checklist. We included peer-reviewed articles, Epubs (electronic publications such as databases), and proceedings written in English. VOSviewer for related keywords extracted from review articles presented as a tabular summary to demonstrate their occurrence and connections among these DM education articles from 2000 to 2022.

Results

A total of 1,080 research articles on remote technologies in DM were initially reviewed. After exclusion, 64 articles were included in our review. Emergency remote teaching/learning education, remote learning, online learning/teaching, and blended learning are the most frequently used keywords. As new remote technologies used in emergencies become more advanced, DM pedagogy is facing more complex problems.

Discussions

Artificial intelligence-enhanced remote technologies promote learning incentives for medical undergraduate students or graduate professionals, but the efficacy of learning quality remains uncertain. More blended AI-modulating pedagogies in DM education could be increasingly important in the future. More sophisticated evaluation and assessment are needed to implement carefully considered designs for effective DM education.

Preliminary Stages for COVID-19 Detection Using Image Processing

COVID-19 was first discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan. There have been reports of thousands of illnesses and hundreds of deaths in almost every region of the world. Medical images, when combined with cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence, have the potential to improve the efficiency of the public health system and deliver faster and more reliable findings in the detection of COVID-19. The process of developing the COVID-19 diagnostic system begins with image accusation and proceeds via preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification. According to literature review, several attempts to develop taxonomies for COVID-19 detection using image processing methods have been introduced. However, most of these adhere to a standard category that exclusively considers classification methods. Therefore, in this study a new taxonomy for the early stages of COVID-19 detection is proposed. It attempts to offer a full grasp of image processing in COVID-19 while considering all phases required prior to classification. The survey concludes with a discussion of outstanding concerns and future directions.

Image Translation by Ad CycleGAN for COVID-19 X-Ray Images: A New Approach for Controllable GAN

We propose a new generative model named adaptive cycle-consistent generative adversarial network, or Ad CycleGAN to perform image translation between normal and COVID-19 positive chest X-ray images. An independent pre-trained criterion is added to the conventional Cycle GAN architecture to exert adaptive control on image translation. The performance of Ad CycleGAN is compared with the Cycle GAN without the external criterion. The quality of the synthetic images is evaluated by quantitative metrics including Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Universal Image Quality Index (UIQI), visual information fidelity (VIF), Frechet Inception Distance (FID), and translation accuracy. The experimental results indicate that the synthetic images generated either by the Cycle GAN or by the Ad CycleGAN have lower MSE and RMSE, and higher scores in PSNR, UIQI, and VIF in homogenous image translation (i.e., Y → Y) compared to the heterogenous image translation process (i.e., X → Y). The synthetic images by Ad CycleGAN through the heterogeneous image translation have significantly higher FID score compared to Cycle GAN (p < 0.01). The image translation accuracy of Ad CycleGAN is higher than that of Cycle GAN when normal images are converted to COVID-19 positive images (p < 0.01). Therefore, we conclude that the Ad CycleGAN with the independent criterion can improve the accuracy of GAN image translation. The new architecture has more control on image synthesis and can help address the common class imbalance issue in machine learning methods and artificial intelligence applications with medical images.

A survey of COVID-19 detection and prediction approaches using mobile devices, AI, and telemedicine

Since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an extremely high impact on all facets of the society and will potentially have an everlasting impact for years to come. In response to this, over the past years, there have been a significant number of research efforts on exploring approaches to combat COVID-19. In this paper, we present a survey of the current research efforts on using mobile Internet of Thing (IoT) devices, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and telemedicine for COVID-19 detection and prediction. We first present the background and then present current research in this field. Specifically, we present the research on COVID-19 monitoring and detection, contact tracing, machine learning based approaches, telemedicine, and security. We finally discuss the challenges and the future work that lay ahead in this field before concluding this paper.

An intelligent spatial stream processing framework for digital forensics amid the COVID-19 outbreak

In recent times, several strategies to minimize the spread of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been adopted. Some recent technological breakthroughs like the drone-based tracking systems have focused on devising specific dynamical approaches for administering public mobility and providing early detection of symptomatic patients. In this paper, a smart real-time image processing framework converged with a non-contact thermal temperature screening module was implemented. The proposed framework comprised of three modules viz., smart temperature screening system, tracking infection footprint, and monitoring social distancing policies. This was accomplished by employing Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) transformation to identify infection hotspots. Further, Haar Cascade and local binary pattern histogram (LBPH) algorithms were used for real-time facial recognition and enforcing social distancing policies. In order to manage the redundant video frames generated at the local computing device, two holistic models, namely, event-triggered video framing (ETVF) and real-time video framing (RTVF) have been deduced, and their respective processing costs were studied for different arrival rates of the video frame. It was observed that the proposed ETVF approach outperforms the performance of RTVF by providing optimal processing costs resulting from the elimination of redundant data frames. Results corresponding to autocorrelation analysis have been presented for the case study of India pertaining to the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, recovered cases, and deaths to obtain an understanding of epidemiological spread of the virus. Further, choropleth analysis was performed for indicating the magnitude of COVID-19 spread corresponding to different regions in India.

Application of Machine Learning and Deep Learning Techniques for COVID-19 Screening Using Radiological Imaging: A Comprehensive Review

Lung, being one of the most important organs in human body, is often affected by various SARS diseases, among which COVID-19 has been found to be the most fatal disease in recent times. In fact, SARS-COVID 19 led to pandemic that spreads fast among the community causing respiratory problems. Under such situation, radiological imaging-based screening [mostly chest X-ray and computer tomography (CT) modalities] has been performed for rapid screening of the disease as it is a non-invasive approach. Due to scarcity of physician/chest specialist/expert doctors, technology-enabled disease screening techniques have been developed by several researchers with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). It can be remarkably observed that the researchers have introduced several AI/ML/DL (deep learning) algorithms for computer-assisted detection of COVID-19 using chest X-ray and CT images. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been conducted to summarize the works related to applications of AI/ML/DL for diagnostic prediction of COVID-19, mainly using X-ray and CT images. Following the PRISMA guidelines, total 265 articles have been selected out of 1715 published articles till the third quarter of 2021. Furthermore, this review summarizes and compares varieties of ML/DL techniques, various datasets, and their results using X-ray and CT imaging. A detailed discussion has been made on the novelty of the published works, along with advantages and limitations.

In-Home Older Adults' Activity Pattern Monitoring Using Depth Sensors: A Review

The global population is aging due to many factors, including longer life expectancy through better healthcare, changing diet, physical activity, etc. We are also witnessing various frequent epidemics as well as pandemics. The existing healthcare system has failed to deliver the care and support needed to our older adults (seniors) during these frequent outbreaks. Sophisticated sensor-based in-home care systems may offer an effective solution to this global crisis. The monitoring system is the key component of any in-home care system. The evidence indicates that they are more useful when implemented in a non-intrusive manner through different visual and audio sensors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision (CV) techniques may be ideal for this purpose. Since the RGB imagery-based CV technique may compromise privacy, people often hesitate to utilize in-home care systems which use this technology. Depth, thermal, and audio-based CV techniques could be meaningful substitutes here. Due to the need to monitor larger areas, this review article presents a systematic discussion on the state-of-the-art using depth sensors as primary data-capturing techniques. We mainly focused on fall detection and other health-related physical patterns. As gait parameters may help to detect these activities, we also considered depth sensor-based gait parameters separately. The article provides discussions on the topic in relation to the terminology, reviews, a survey of popular datasets, and future scopes.

Recurrent neural network based sentiment analysis of social media data during corona pandemic under national lockdown

The Corona virus pandemic has affected the normal course of life. People all over the world take the social media to express their opinions and general emotions regarding this phenomenon. In a relatively short period of time, tweets about the new Corona virus increased by an amount never before seen on the social networking site Twitter. In this research work, Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Data to Identify the Feelings of Indians during Corona Pandemic under National Lockdown using recurrent neural network is proposed. The proposed method is analyzed using four steps: that is Data collection, data preparation, Building sentiment analysis model and Visualization of the results. For Data collection, the twitter dataset are collected from social networking platform twitter by application programming interface. For Data preparation, the input data set are pre-processed for removing URL links, removing unnecessary spaces, removing punctuations and numbers. After data cleaning or preprocessing entire particular characters and non-US characters from Standard Code for Information Interchange, apart from hash tag, are extracted as refined tweet text. In addition, entire behaviors less than three alphabets are not assumed at analysis of tweets, lastly, tokenization and derivation was carried out by Porter Stemmer to perform opinion mining. To authenticate the method, categorized the tweets linked to COVID-19 national lockdown. For categorization, recurrent neural method is used. RNN classify the sentiment classification as positive, negative and neutral sentiment scores. The efficiency of the proposed RNN based Sentimental analysis classification of COVID-19 is assessed various performances by evaluation metrics, like sensitivity, precision, recall, f-measure, specificity and accuracy. The proposed method attains 24.51%, 25.35%, 31.45% and 24.53% high accuracy, 43.51%, 52.35%, 21.45% and 28.53% high sensitivity than the existing methods.

AI for COVID-19 Detection from Radiographs: Incisive Analysis of State of the Art Techniques, Key Challenges and Future Directions

Background and objective

In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has had an evident impact on the way research addresses challenges in different domains. It has proven to be a huge asset, especially in the medical field, allowing for time-efficient and reliable solutions. This research aims to spotlight the impact of deep learning and machine learning models in the detection of COVID-19 from medical images. This is achieved by conducting a review of the state-of-the-art approaches proposed by the recent works in this field.

Methods

The main focus of this study is the recent developments of classification and segmentation approaches to image-based COVID-19 detection. The study reviews 140 research papers published in different academic research databases. These papers have been screened and filtered based on specified criteria, to acquire insights prudent to image-based COVID-19 detection.

Results

The methods discussed in this review include different types of imaging modality, predominantly X-rays and CT scans. These modalities are used for classification and segmentation tasks as well. This review seeks to categorize and discuss the different deep learning and machine learning architectures employed for these tasks, based on the imaging modality utilized. It also hints at other possible deep learning and machine learning architectures that can be proposed for better results towards COVID-19 detection. Along with that, a detailed overview of the emerging trends and breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence-based COVID-19 detection has been discussed as well.

Conclusion

This work concludes by stipulating the technical and non-technical challenges faced by researchers and illustrates the advantages of image-based COVID-19 detection with Artificial Intelligence techniques.

Deep learning course development and evaluation of artificial intelligence in vocational senior high schools

This study aimed to develop cross-domain deep learning courses of artificial intelligence in vocational senior high schools and explore its impact on students’ learning effects. It initially adopted a literature review to develop a cross-domain SPOC-AIoT Course with SPOC (small private online courses) and the Double Diamond 4D model in vocational senior high schools. Afterward, it adopted participatory action research (PAR) and a questionnaire survey and conducted analyses on the various aspects of the technology acceptance model by SmartPLS. Further, this study explored the impact on the effects of deep learning and knowledge-ability learning of artificial intelligence after 16 weeks of course teaching among 36 Grade I students from the electrical and electronic group of a vocational senior high school. This study revealed that (1) the four stages of the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode of the Double Diamond 4D model may effectively guide students to learn AIoT knowledge and skills. (2) Based on the technology acceptance model, the analysis of learning and participation in SmartPLS indicated that this model conformed to the academic fitness requirements of the overall model. (3) After learning with the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode, the learning effects of students in AIoT have been significantly improved to a positive aspect. Finally, some suggestions were put forward to promote the development of the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode Course in the future.

Forecasting new diseases in low-data settings using transfer learning

Recent infectious disease outbreaks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Zika epidemic in Brazil, have demonstrated both the importance and difficulty of accurately forecasting novel infectious diseases. When new diseases first emerge, we have little knowledge of the transmission process, the level and duration of immunity to reinfection, or other parameters required to build realistic epidemiological models. Time series forecasts and machine learning, while less reliant on assumptions about the disease, require large amounts of data that are also not available in early stages of an outbreak. In this study, we examine how knowledge of related diseases can help make predictions of new diseases in data-scarce environments using transfer learning. We implement both an empirical and a synthetic approach. Using data from Brazil, we compare how well different machine learning models transfer knowledge between two different dataset pairs: case counts of (i) dengue and Zika, and (ii) influenza and COVID-19. In the synthetic analysis, we generate data with an SIR model using different transmission and recovery rates, and then compare the effectiveness of different transfer learning methods. We find that transfer learning offers the potential to improve predictions, even beyond a model based on data from the target disease, though the appropriate source disease must be chosen carefully. While imperfect, these models offer an additional input for decision makers for pandemic response.

Non-iterative learning machine for identifying CoViD19 using chest X-ray images

CoViD19 is a novel disease which has created panic worldwide by infecting millions of people around the world. The last significant variant of this virus, called as omicron, contributed to majority of cases in the third wave across globe. Though lesser in severity as compared to its predecessor, the delta variant, this mutation has shown higher communicable rate. This novel virus with symptoms of pneumonia is dangerous as it is communicable and hence, has engulfed entire world in a very short span of time. With the help of machine learning techniques, entire process of detection can be automated so that direct contacts can be avoided. Therefore, in this paper, experimentation is performed on CoViD19 chest X-ray images using higher order statistics with iterative and non-iterative models. Higher order statistics provide a way of analyzing the disturbances in the chest X-ray images. The results obtained are quite good with 96.64% accuracy using a non-iterative model. For fast testing of the patients, non-iterative model is preferred because it has advantage over iterative model in terms of speed. Comparison with some of the available state-of-the-art methods and some iterative methods proves efficacy of the work.

Peace engineering and compassionate operations: a framework for leveraging social good

Purpose

Peace engineering and compassionate operations can unlock the potential of emerging technologies for social good. This work aims to investigate the integration of peace engineering and compassionate operations by proposing an integrative framework and identifying the main drivers regarding social good, considering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) landscape.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a two-stage methodology by employing a narrative literature review in the first stage to identify the relationships and drivers and propose an original framework. In the second stage, the authors utilized an expert panel to validate the framework’s drivers.

Findings

The authors identified five main categories related to peace engineering and compassionate operations, which were then used to support the categorization of the drivers. In the second stage, the authors validated the drivers with a panel of academicians and experienced industry practitioners.

Practical implications

The proposed framework can provide insightful directions for practitioners and governments to develop strategies and projects in different contexts, including humanitarian logistics, climate change crises, supply chain disruptions, etc.

Originality/value

This work makes unique contributions by reinvigorating an amalgamation of the peace engineering and compassionate operations arenas and their integration with the SDGs to enable enhanced social good, supported by cutting-edge technologies. Thus, this framework’s contributions encompass essential theoretical, managerial, and social implications.

A privacy-aware method for COVID-19 detection in chest CT images using lightweight deep conventional neural network and blockchain

With the global spread of the COVID-19 epidemic, a reliable method is required for identifying COVID-19 victims. The biggest issue in detecting the virus is a lack of testing kits that are both reliable and affordable. Due to the virus's rapid dissemination, medical professionals have trouble finding positive patients. However, the next real-life issue is sharing data with hospitals around the world while considering the organizations' privacy concerns. The primary worries for training a global Deep Learning (DL) model are creating a collaborative platform and personal confidentiality. Another challenge is exchanging data with health care institutions while protecting the organizations' confidentiality. The primary concerns for training a universal DL model are creating a collaborative platform and preserving privacy. This paper provides a model that receives a small quantity of data from various sources, like organizations or sections of hospitals, and trains a global DL model utilizing blockchain-based Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In addition, we use the Transfer Learning (TL) technique to initialize layers rather than initialize randomly and discover which layers should be removed before selection. Besides, the blockchain system verifies the data, and the DL method trains the model globally while keeping the institution's confidentiality. Furthermore, we gather the actual and novel COVID-19 patients. Finally, we run extensive experiments utilizing Python and its libraries, such as Scikit-Learn and TensorFlow, to assess the proposed method. We evaluated works using five different datasets, including Boukan Dr. Shahid Gholipour hospital, Tabriz Emam Reza hospital, Mahabad Emam Khomeini hospital, Maragheh Dr.Beheshti hospital, and Miandoab Abbasi hospital datasets, and our technique outperform state-of-the-art methods on average in terms of precision (2.7%), recall (3.1%), F1 (2.9%), and accuracy (2.8%).

The medical and societal impact of big data analytics and artificial intelligence applications in combating pandemics: A review focused on Covid-19

With Covid-19 impacting communities in different ways, research has increasingly turned to big data analytics (BDA) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to track and monitor the virus's spread and its effect on humanity and the global economy. The purpose of this study is to conduct an in-depth literature review to identify how BDA and AI were involved in the management of Covid-19 (while considering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)). The rigorous search resulted in a portfolio of 607 articles, retrieved from the Web of Science database, where content analysis has been conducted. This study identifies the BDA and AI applications developed to deal with the initial Covid-19 outbreak and the containment of the pandemic, along with their benefits for the social good. Moreover, this study reveals the DEI challenges related to these applications, ways to mitigate the concerns, and how to develop viable techniques to deal with similar crises in the future. The article pool recognized the high presence of machine learning (ML) and the role of mobile technology, social media and telemedicine in the use of BDA and AI during Covid-19. This study offers a collective insight into many of the key issues and underlying complexities affecting public health and society from Covid-19, and the solutions offered from information systems and technological perspectives.

Lung Disease Classification in CXR Images Using Hybrid Inception-ResNet-v2 Model and Edge Computing

Chest X-ray (CXR) imaging is one of the most widely used and economical tests to diagnose a wide range of diseases. However, even for expert radiologists, it is a challenge to accurately diagnose diseases from CXR samples. Furthermore, there remains an acute shortage of trained radiologists worldwide. In the present study, a range of machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and transfer learning (TL) approaches have been evaluated to classify diseases in an openly available CXR image dataset. A combination of the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) and weighted class balancing is used to alleviate the effects of class imbalance. A hybrid Inception-ResNet-v2 transfer learning model coupled with data augmentation and image enhancement gives the best accuracy. The model is deployed in an edge environment using Amazon IoT Core to automate the task of disease detection in CXR images with three categories, namely pneumonia, COVID-19, and normal. Comparative analysis has been given in various metrics such as precision, recall, accuracy, AUC-ROC score, etc. The proposed technique gives an average accuracy of 98.66%. The accuracies of other TL models, namely SqueezeNet, VGG19, ResNet50, and MobileNetV2 are 97.33%, 91.66%, 90.33%, and 76.00%, respectively. Further, a DL model, trained from scratch, gives an accuracy of 92.43%. Two feature-based ML classification techniques, namely support vector machine with local binary pattern (SVM + LBP) and decision tree with histogram of oriented gradients (DT + HOG) yield an accuracy of 87.98% and 86.87%, respectively.

Review on COVID-19 diagnosis models based on machine learning and deep learning approaches

COVID-19 is the disease evoked by a new breed of coronavirus called the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recently, COVID-19 has become a pandemic by infecting more than 152 million people in over 216 countries and territories. The exponential increase in the number of infections has rendered traditional diagnosis techniques inefficient. Therefore, many researchers have developed several intelligent techniques, such as deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML), which can assist the healthcare sector in providing quick and precise COVID-19 diagnosis. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the most recent DL and ML techniques for COVID-19 diagnosis. The studies are published from December 2019 until April 2021. In general, this paper includes more than 200 studies that have been carefully selected from several publishers, such as IEEE, Springer and Elsevier. We classify the research tracks into two categories: DL and ML and present COVID-19 public datasets established and extracted from different countries. The measures used to evaluate diagnosis methods are comparatively analysed and proper discussion is provided. In conclusion, for COVID-19 diagnosing and outbreak prediction, SVM is the most widely used machine learning mechanism, and CNN is the most widely used deep learning mechanism. Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity are the most widely used measurements in previous studies. Finally, this review paper will guide the research community on the upcoming development of machine learning for COVID-19 and inspire their works for future development. Proposing a novel deep network for detecting COVID-19 based on chest images

The rapid outbreak of coronavirus threatens humans' life all around the world. Due to the insufficient diagnostic infrastructures, developing an accurate, efficient, inexpensive, and quick diagnostic tool is of great importance. To date, researchers have proposed several detection models based on chest imaging analysis, primarily based on deep neural networks; however, none of which could achieve a reliable and highly sensitive performance yet. Therefore, the nature of this study is primary epidemiological research that aims to overcome the limitations mentioned above by proposing a large-scale publicly available dataset of chest computed tomography scan (CT-scan) images consisting of more than 13k samples. Secondly, we propose a more sensitive deep neural networks model for CT-scan images of the lungs, providing a pixel-wise attention layer on top of the high-level features extracted from the network. Moreover, the proposed model is extended through a transfer learning approach for being applicable in the case of chest X-Ray (CXR) images. The proposed model and its extension have been trained and evaluated through several experiments. The inclusion criteria were patients with suspected PE and positive real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2. The exclusion criteria were negative or inconclusive RT-PCR and other chest CT indications. Our model achieves an AUC score of 0.886, significantly better than its closest competitor, whose AUC is 0.843. Moreover, the obtained results on another commonly-used benchmark show an AUC of 0.899, outperforming related models. Additionally, the sensitivity of our model is 0.858, while that of its closest competitor is 0.81, explaining the efficiency of pixel-wise attention strategy in detecting coronavirus. Our promising results and the efficiency of the models imply that the proposed models can be considered reliable tools for assisting doctors in detecting coronavirus.

Transfer-Learning-Based Approach for the Diagnosis of Lung Diseases from Chest X-ray Images

Using chest X-ray images is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to diagnose patients who suffer from lung diseases such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Inspired by existing work, a deep learning model is proposed to classify chest X-ray images into 14 lung-related pathological conditions. However, small datasets are not sufficient to train the deep learning model. Two methods were used to tackle this: (1) transfer learning based on two pretrained neural networks, DenseNet and ResNet, was employed; (2) data were preprocessed, including checking data leakage, handling class imbalance, and performing data augmentation, before feeding the neural network. The proposed model was evaluated according to the classification accuracy and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, as well as visualized by class activation maps. DenseNet121 and ResNet50 were used in the simulations, and the results showed that the model trained by DenseNet121 had better accuracy than that trained by ResNet50.

Applications of artificial intelligence in COVID-19 pandemic: A comprehensive review

During the current global public health emergency caused by novel coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), researchers and medical experts started working day and night to search for new technologies to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies have shown that artificial intelligence (AI) has been successfully employed in the health sector for various healthcare procedures. This study comprehensively reviewed the research and development on state-of-the-art applications of artificial intelligence for combating the COVID-19 pandemic. In the process of literature retrieval, the relevant literature from citation databases including ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Preprints from arXiv, medRxiv, and bioRxiv was selected. Recent advances in the field of AI-based technologies are critically reviewed and summarized. Various challenges associated with the use of these technologies are highlighted and based on updated studies and critical analysis, research gaps and future recommendations are identified and discussed. The comparison between various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods, the dominant AI-based technique, mostly used ML and DL methods for COVID-19 detection, diagnosis, screening, classification, drug repurposing, prediction, and forecasting, and insights about where the current research is heading are highlighted. Recent research and development in the field of artificial intelligence has greatly improved the COVID-19 screening, diagnostics, and prediction and results in better scale-up, timely response, most reliable, and efficient outcomes, and sometimes outperforms humans in certain healthcare tasks. This review article will help researchers, healthcare institutes and organizations, government officials, and policymakers with new insights into how AI can control the COVID-19 pandemic and drive more research and studies for mitigating the COVID-19 outbreak.

The COVID-19 epidemic analysis and diagnosis using deep learning: A systematic literature review and future directions

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak has resulted in countless deaths and has harmed all facets of human existence. COVID-19 has been designated an epidemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), which has placed a tremendous burden on nearly all countries, especially those with weak health systems. However, Deep Learning (DL) has been applied in several applications and many types of detection applications in the medical field, including thyroid diagnosis, lung nodule recognition, fetal localization, and detection of diabetic retinopathy. Furthermore, various clinical imaging sources, like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), X-ray, and Computed Tomography (CT), make DL a perfect technique to tackle the epidemic of COVID-19. Inspired by this fact, a considerable amount of research has been done. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been used in this study to discover, assess, and integrate findings from relevant studies. DL techniques used in COVID-19 have also been categorized into seven main distinct categories as Long Short Term Memory Networks (LSTM), Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), Conventional Neural Networks (CNNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Autoencoders, and hybrid approaches. Then, the state-of-the-art studies connected to DL techniques and applications for health problems with COVID-19 have been highlighted. Moreover, many issues and problems associated with DL implementation for COVID-19 have been addressed, which are anticipated to stimulate more investigations to control the prevalence and disaster control in the future. According to the findings, most papers are assessed using characteristics such as accuracy, delay, robustness, and scalability. Meanwhile, other features are underutilized, such as security and convergence time. Python is also the most commonly used language in papers, accounting for 75% of the time. According to the investigation, 37.83% of applications have identified chest CT/chest X-ray images for patients.

COVID-19 cough sound symptoms classification from scalogram image representation using deep learning models

Deep Learning shows promising performance in diverse fields and has become an emerging technology in Artificial Intelligence. Recent visual recognition is based on the ranking of photographs and the finding of artefacts in those images. The aim of this research is to classify the different cough sounds of COVID-19 artefacts in the signals of altered real-life environments. The introduced model takes into consideration two major steps. The first step is the transformation phase from sound to image that is optimized by the scalogram technique. The second step involves feature extraction and classification based on six deep transfer models (GoogleNet, ResNet18, ResNet50, ResNet101, MobileNetv2, and NasNetmobile). The dataset used contains 1457 (755 of COVID-19 and 702 of healthy) wave cough sounds. Although our recognition model performs the best, its accuracy only reaches 94.9% based on SGDM optimizer. The accuracy is promising enough for a wide set of labeled cough data to test the potential for generalization. The outcomes show that ResNet18 is the most stable model to classify the cough sounds from a limited dataset with a sensitivity of 94.44% and a specificity of 95.37%. Finally, a comparison of the research with a similar analysis is made. It is observed that the proposed model is more reliable and accurate than any current models. Cough research precision is promising enough to test the ability for extrapolation and generalization.

Recent omics-based computational methods for COVID-19 drug discovery and repurposing

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is the main reason for the increasing number of deaths worldwide. Although strict quarantine measures were followed in many countries, the disease situation is still intractable. Thus, it is needed to utilize all possible means to confront this pandemic. Therefore, researchers are in a race against the time to produce potential treatments to cure or reduce the increasing infections of COVID-19. Computational methods are widely proving rapid successes in biological related problems, including diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Many efforts in recent months utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in the context of fighting the spread of COVID-19. Providing periodic reviews and discussions of recent efforts saves the time of researchers and helps to link their endeavors for a faster and efficient confrontation of the pandemic. In this review, we discuss the recent promising studies that used Omics-based data and utilized AI algorithms and other computational tools to achieve this goal. We review the established datasets and the developed methods that were basically directed to new or repurposed drugs, vaccinations and diagnosis. The tools and methods varied depending on the level of details in the available information such as structures, sequences or metabolic data.

The potential and challenges of Health 4.0 to face COVID-19 pandemic: a rapid review

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated the need to evolve health services to reduce the risk of contagion and promote a collaborative environment even remotely. Advances in Industry 4.0, including the internet of things, mobile networks, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence make Health 4.0 possible to connect patients with healthcare professionals. Hence, the focus of this work is analyzing the potentiality, and challenges of state-of-the-art Health 4.0 applications to face the COVID-19 pandemic including augmented environments, diagnosis of the virus, forecasts, medical robotics, and remote clinical services. It is concluded that Health 4.0 can be applied in the prevention of contagion, improve diagnosis, promote virtual learning environments, and offer remote services. However, there are still ethical, technical, security, and legal challenges to be addressed. Additionally, more imaging datasets for COVID-19 detection need to be made available to the scientific community. Working in the areas of opportunity will help to address the new normal. Likewise, Health 4.0 can be applied not only in the COVID-19 pandemic, but also in future global viruses and natural disasters.

Application of machine learning in CT images and X-rays of COVID-19 pneumonia

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread worldwide. X-ray and computed tomography (CT) are 2 technologies widely used in image acquisition, segmentation, diagnosis, and evaluation. Artificial intelligence can accurately segment infected parts in X-ray and CT images, assist doctors in improving diagnosis efficiency, and facilitate the subsequent assessment of the severity of the patient infection. The medical assistant platform based on machine learning can help radiologists make clinical decisions and helper in screening, diagnosis, and treatment. By providing scientific methods for image recognition, segmentation, and evaluation, we summarized the latest developments in the application of artificial intelligence in COVID-19 lung imaging, and provided guidance and inspiration to researchers and doctors who are fighting the COVID-19 virus.

Deep Transfer Learning Based Unified Framework for COVID19 Classification and Infection Detection from Chest X-Ray Images

The presentation of the COVID19 has endangered several million lives worldwide causing thousands of deaths every day. Evolution of COVID19 as a pandemic calls for automated solutions for initial screening and treatment management. In addition to the thermal scanning mechanisms, findings from chest X-ray imaging examinations are reliable predictors in COVID19 detection, long-term monitoring and severity evaluation. This paper presents a novel deep transfer learning based framework for COVID19 detection and segmentation of infections from chest X-ray images. It is realized as a two-stage cascaded framework with classifier and segmentation subnetwork models. The classifier is modeled as a fine-tuned residual SqueezeNet network, and the segmentation network is implemented as a fine-tuned SegNet semantic segmentation network. The segmentation task is enhanced with a bioinspired Gaussian Mixture Model-based super pixel segmentation. This framework is trained and tested with two public datasets for binary and multiclass classifications and infection segmentation. It achieves accuracies of 99.69% and 99.48% for binary and three class classifications, and a mean accuracy of 83.437% for segmentation. Experimental results and comparative evaluations demonstrate the superiority of this unified model and signify potential extensions for biomarker definition and severity quantization.

Diagnostic accuracy of sagittal TSE-T2W, variable flip angle 3D TSE-T2W and high-resolution 3D heavily T2W sequences for the stenosis of two localizations: the cerebral aqueduct and the superior medullary velum

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of conventional sagittal turbo spin echo T2-weighted (Sag TSE-T2W), variable flip angle 3D TSE (VFA-3D-TSE) and high-resolution 3D heavily T2W (HR-3D-HT2W) sequences in the diagnosis of primary aqueductal stenosis (PAS) and superior medullary velum stenosis (SMV-S), and the effect of stenosis localization on diagnosis.

METHODS

Seventy-seven patients were included in the study. The diagnosis accuracy of the HR-3D-HT2W, Sag TSE-T2W and VFA-3D-TSE sequences, was classified into three grades by two experienced neuroradiologists: grade 0 (the sequence has no diagnostic ability), grade 1 (the sequence diagnoses stenosis but does not show focal stenosis itself or membrane formation), and grade 2 (the sequence makes a definitive diagnosis of stenosis and shows focal stenosis itself or membrane formation). Stenosis localizations were divided into three as Cerebral Aquaduct (CA), superior medullary velum (SMV) and SMV+CA. In the statistical analysis, the grades of the sequences were compared without making a differentiation based on localization. Then, the effect of localization on diagnosis was determined by comparing the grades for individual localizations.

RESULTS

In the sequence comparison, grade 0 was not detected in the VFA-3D-TSE and HR-3D-HT2W sequences, and these sequences diagnosed all cases. On the other hand, 25.4% of grade 0 was detected with the Sag TSE-T2W sequence (P<0.05). Grade 1 was detected by VFA-3D-TSE in 23% of the cases, while grade 1 (12.5%) was detected by HRH-3D-T2W in only one case, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). When the sequences were examined according to localizations, the rate of grade 0 in the Sag TSE-T2W sequence was statistically significantly higher for the SMV localization (33.3%) compared to CA (66.7%) and SMV+CA (0%) (P<0.05). Localization had no effect on diagnosis using the other sequences.

CONCLUSION

In our study, we found that the VFA-3D-TSE and HR-3D-HT2W sequences were successful in the diagnosis of PAS and SMV-S contrary to the Sag TSE-T2W sequence.

Diagnosis of COVID-19 Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning: A Review

BACKGROUND

This paper provides a systematic review of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques in fighting against the effects of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

OBJECTIVE & METHOD

The objective is to perform a scoping review on AI for COVID-19 using preferred reporting items of systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. A literature search was performed for relevant studies published from 1 January 2020 till 27 March 2021. Out of 4050 research papers available in reputed publishers, a full-text review of 440 articles was done based on the keywords of AI, COVID-19, ML, forecasting, DL, X-ray, and computed tomography (CT). Finally, 52 articles were included in the result synthesis of this paper. As part of the review, different ML regression methods were reviewed first in predicting the number of confirmed and death cases. Secondly, a comprehensive survey was carried out on the use of ML in classifying COVID-19 patients. Thirdly, different datasets on medical imaging were compared in terms of the number of images, number of positive samples and number of classes in the datasets. The different stages of the diagnosis, including preprocessing, segmentation and feature extraction were also reviewed. Fourthly, the performance results of different research papers were compared to evaluate the effectiveness of DL methods on different datasets.

RESULTS

Results show that residual neural network (ResNet-18) and densely connected convolutional network (DenseNet 169) exhibit excellent classification accuracy for X-ray images, while DenseNet-201 has the maximum accuracy in classifying CT scan images. This indicates that ML and DL are useful tools in assisting researchers and medical professionals in predicting, screening and detecting COVID-19.

CONCLUSION

Finally, this review highlights the existing challenges, including regulations, noisy data, data privacy, and the lack of reliable large datasets, then provides future research directions in applying AI in managing COVID-19.

The AM technology uses digital files for the production of crucial medical parts, which has been proven essential during the COVID-19 crisis. Going ahead, the 3D printable clinical model resources described here will probably be extended in various centralized model storehouses with new inventive open-source models. Government agencies, individuals, corporations and universities are working together to quickly development of various 3D-printed products especially when established supply chains are under distress, and supply cannot keep up with demand.

Artificial Intelligence and COVID-19: A Systematic umbrella review and roads ahead

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has played a substantial role in the response to the challenges posed by the current pandemic. The growing interest in using AI to handle Covid-19 issues has accelerated the pace of AI research and resulted in an exponential increase in articles and review studies within a very short period of time. Hence, it is becoming challenging to explore the large corpus of academic publications dedicated to the global health crisis. Even with the presence of systematic review studies, given their number and diversity, identifying trends and research avenues beyond the pandemic should be an arduous task. We conclude therefore that after the one-year mark of the declaration of Covid-19 as a pandemic, the accumulated scientific contribution lacks two fundamental aspects: Knowledge synthesis and Future projections.

In contribution to fill this void, this paper is a (i) synthesis study and (ii) foresight exercise. The synthesis study aims to provide the scholars a consolidation of findings and a knowledge synthesis through a systematic review of the reviews (umbrella review) studying AI applications against Covid-19. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and other preprint sources from 1st December 2019 to 1st June 2021 for eligible reviews. The literature search and screening process resulted in 45 included reviews. Our findings reveal patterns, relationships, and trends in the AI research community response to the pandemic. We found that in the space of few months, the research objectives of the literature have developed rapidly from identifying potential AI applications to evaluating current uses of intelligent systems. Only few reviews have adopted the meta-analysis as a study design. Moreover, a clear dominance of the medical theme and the DNN methods has been observed in the reported AI applications.

Based on its constructive systematic umbrella review, this work conducts a foresight exercise that tries to envision the post-Covid-19 research landscape of the AI field. We see seven key themes of research that may be an outcome of the present crisis and which advocate a more sustainable and responsible form of intelligent systems. We set accordingly a post-pandemic research agenda articulated around these seven drivers.

The results of this study can be useful for the AI research community to obtain a holistic view of the current literature and to help prioritize research needs as we are heading toward the new normal.

Blockchain and AI-Based Solutions to Combat Coronavirus (COVID-19)-Like Epidemics: A Survey

The beginning of 2020 has seen the emergence of coronavirus outbreak caused by a novel virus called SARS-CoV-2. The sudden explosion and uncontrolled worldwide spread of COVID-19 show the limitations of existing healthcare systems in timely handling public health emergencies. In such contexts, innovative technologies such as blockchain and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged as promising solutions for fighting coronavirus epidemic. In particular, blockchain can combat pandemics by enabling early detection of outbreaks, ensuring the ordering of medical data, and ensuring reliable medical supply chain during the outbreak tracing. Moreover, AI provides intelligent solutions for identifying symptoms caused by coronavirus for treatments and supporting drug manufacturing. Therefore, we present an extensive survey on the use of blockchain and AI for combating COVID-19 epidemics. First, we introduce a new conceptual architecture which integrates blockchain and AI for fighting COVID-19. Then, we survey the latest research efforts on the use of blockchain and AI for fighting COVID-19 in various applications. The newly emerging projects and use cases enabled by these technologies to deal with coronavirus pandemic are also presented. A case study is also provided using federated AI for COVID-19 detection. Finally, we point out challenges and future directions that motivate more research efforts to deal with future coronavirus-like epidemics.

Transfer learning-based approach for detecting COVID-19 ailment in lung CT scan

This research work aims to identify COVID-19 through deep learning models using lung CT-SCAN images. In order to enhance lung CT scan efficiency, a super-residual dense neural network was applied. The experimentation has been carried out using benchmark datasets like SARS-COV-2 CT-Scan and Covid-CT Scan. To mark COVID-19 as positive or negative for the improved CT scan, existing pre-trained models such as XceptionNet, MobileNet, InceptionV3, DenseNet, ResNet50, and VGG (Visual Geometry Group)16 have been used. Taking CT scans with super resolution using a residual dense neural network in the pre-processing step resulted in improving the accuracy, F1 score, precision, and recall of the proposed model. On the dataset Covid-CT Scan and SARS-COV-2 CT-Scan, the MobileNet model provided a precision of 94.12% and 100% respectively.

An Overview on Analyzing Deep Learning and Transfer Learning Approaches for Health Monitoring

With the rise and advancement of technology, early detection and involvement in health-associated monitoring through home control are growing with population aging. The expansion of healthy life expectations is progressively significant due to the speedy aging of the world population. The patient requires early and home-based treatment to detect and prevent disease on time and with less effort. Home-based health monitoring has been considered the need of a smart home. The services of health monitoring can facilitate the patient by collecting and analyzing the data of health for tackling diverse complex issues of health at a large scale. Health monitoring is a sustainable progression of clinical trials for ensuring that health is monitored according to the defined protocol and standard operating procedures. Various scenarios can be considered for monitoring health and are performed through experts of the field. Healthcare systems are having large-scale infrastructure of electronic devices, medical information systems, wearable and smart devices, medical records, and handheld devices. The growth in medical infrastructure, combined with the development of computational approaches in healthcare, has empowered practitioners and researchers to devise a novel solution in the innovative spectra. A detailed report of the existing literature in terms of deep learning and transfer learning is the dire need and facilitating of modern healthcare. To overcome these limitations, therefore, the proposed study presents a comprehensive review of the existing approaches, techniques, and methods associated with deep learning and transfer learning for health monitoring. This review will help researchers to formulate new ideas for facilitating healthcare based on the existing evidence.

Impacts of AIOT Implementation Course on the Learning Outcomes of Senior High School Students

In this study, experimental teaching was conducted through the artificial intelligence of things (AIOT) practical course, and the 4D (discover, define, develop, deliver) double diamond shape was used to design the course and plan the teaching content to observe the students’ self-efficacy and learning anxiety. The technology acceptance model (TAM) concept was used to explore learning effectiveness and satisfaction. A total of 36 Senior One students from a senior high school in Kaohsiung were selected as the research subjects in two classes per week for 13 weeks. Questionnaires and qualitative interviews were used to understand the correlation between students’ self-efficacy, anxiety, outcomes, and learning satisfaction with the AIOT course during the flipped learning process. The study used SmartPLS3 to analyze the measurement model and structural model, and bootstrapping to conduct the path analysis and validate the research hypotheses. Because this research provides students with relevant online teaching videos for linking and browsing in the textbooks, and the video time should not be too long, in the teaching process, small-scale online learning courses are adopted for flipped teaching, which promptly arouses students’ interest and enhances their learning participation. Through the sharing of homework with each other, its content deficiencies were modified, students’ anxiety in learning was reduced, and the effect of learning and thinking together was achieved; in the teaching mode, theoretical content was combined with physical and practical courses to implement cross-disciplinary. To learn, the principle of 4D double diamond design to make “reciprocal corrections” between curriculum planning and teaching implementation as the teaching model framework was used. The results of this study show ”self-efficacy” has a significant positive effect on the “perceived usefulness” and “perceived ease of use” of users. “Learning anxiety” does not significantly predict the “perceived ease of use” or “perceived usefulness” of flipped learning using online e-learning. The “perceived ease of use” and “perceived usefulness” have positive impacts on the prediction of “behavioral intention” in flipped teaching using online digital teaching materials. The “perceived ease of use” has a positive and high impact on “perceived usefulness”. “Learning engagement” positively affects students’ actual “behavioral intention” towards learning. Students are highly receptive to learning new knowledge about science and technology.

CIoTVID: Towards an Open IoT-Platform for Infective Pandemic Diseases such as COVID-19

The factors affecting the penetration of certain diseases such as COVID-19 in society are still unknown. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can play a crucial role during the time of crisis and they can provide a more holistic view of the reasons that govern the outbreak of a contagious disease. The understanding of COVID-19 will be enriched by the analysis of data related to the phenomena, and this data can be collected using IoT sensors. In this paper, we show an integrated solution based on IoT technologies that can serve as opportunistic health data acquisition agents for combating the pandemic of COVID-19, named CIoTVID. The platform is composed of four layers-data acquisition, data aggregation, machine intelligence and services, within the solution. To demonstrate its validity, the solution has been tested with a use case based on creating a classifier of medical conditions using real data of voice, performing successfully. The layer of data aggregation is particularly relevant in this kind of solution as the data coming from medical devices has a very different nature to that coming from electronic sensors. Due to the adaptability of the platform to heterogeneous data and volumes of data; individuals, policymakers, and clinics could benefit from it to fight the propagation of the pandemic.

Explainable COVID-19 Detection Using Chest CT Scans and Deep Learning

This paper explores how well deep learning models trained on chest CT images can diagnose COVID-19 infected people in a fast and automated process. To this end, we adopted advanced deep network architectures and proposed a transfer learning strategy using custom-sized input tailored for each deep architecture to achieve the best performance. We conducted extensive sets of experiments on two CT image datasets, namely, the SARS-CoV-2 CT-scan and the COVID19-CT. The results show superior performances for our models compared with previous studies. Our best models achieved average accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score values of 99.4%, 99.6%, 99.8%, 99.6%, and 99.4% on the SARS-CoV-2 dataset, and 92.9%, 91.3%, 93.7%, 92.2%, and 92.5% on the COVID19-CT dataset, respectively. For better interpretability of the results, we applied visualization techniques to provide visual explanations for the models' predictions. Feature visualizations of the learned features show well-separated clusters representing CT images of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 cases. Moreover, the visualizations indicate that our models are not only capable of identifying COVID-19 cases but also provide accurate localization of the COVID-19-associated regions, as indicated by well-trained radiologists.

Applications of artificial intelligence in battling against covid-19: A literature review

Colloquially known as coronavirus, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), that causes CoronaVirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), has become a matter of grave concern for every country around the world. The rapid growth of the pandemic has wreaked havoc and prompted the need for immediate reactions to curb the effects. To manage the problems, many research in a variety of area of science have started studying the issue. Artificial Intelligence is among the area of science that has found great applications in tackling the problem in many aspects. Here, we perform an overview on the applications of AI in a variety of fields including diagnosis of the disease via different types of tests and symptoms, monitoring patients, identifying severity of a patient, processing covid-19 related imaging tests, epidemiology, pharmaceutical studies, etc. The aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive survey on the applications of AI in battling against the difficulties the outbreak has caused. Thus we cover every way that AI approaches have been employed and to cover all the research until the writing of this paper. We try organize the works in a way that overall picture is comprehensible. Such a picture, although full of details, is very helpful in understand where AI sits in current pandemonium. We also tried to conclude the paper with ideas on how the problems can be tackled in a better way and provide some suggestions for future works.

COVID-19 Vaccine: A neutrosophic MCDM approach for determining the priority groups

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, most of the countries around the world have been confronting the loss of lives, struggling with several economical parameters, i.e. low GDP growth, increasing unemployment rate, and others. It's been 11 months since we are struggling with COVID-19 and some of the countries already facing the second wave of COVID-19. To get rid of these problems, inventions of a vaccine and its optimum distribution is a key factor. Many companies are trying to find a vaccine, but for nearly 8 billion people it would be impossible to find a vaccine. Thus, the competition arises, and this competition would be too intense to satisfy all the people of a country with the vaccine. Therefore, at first, governments must identify priority groups for allocating COVID-19 vaccine doses. In this work, we identify four main criteria and fifteen sub-criteria based on age, health status, a woman's status, and the kind of job. The main and sub-criteria will be evaluated using a neutrosophic Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Then, the COVID-19 vaccine alternatives will be ranked using a neutrosophic TOPSIS method. All the results obtained indicate that the healthcare personnel, people with high-risk health, elderly people, essential workers, pregnant and lactating mothers are the most prioritized people to take the vaccine dose first. Also, the results indicate that the most appropriate vaccine for patients and health workers have priority over other alternative vaccines.
