Preparation of polydopamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles for dispersive solid-phase extraction of water-soluble synthetic colorants in beverage samples with HPLC analysis

Poly(levodopa)-Functionalized Polysaccharide Hydrogel Enriched in Fe3O4 Particles for Multiple-Purpose Biomedical Applications

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in the use of curdlan, a naturally derived polymer, for medical applications. However, it is relatively inactive, and additives increasing its biomedical potential are required; for example, antibacterial compounds, magnetic particles, or hemostatic agents. The stability of such complex constructs may be increased by additional functional networks, for instance, polycatecholamines. The article presents the production and characterization of functional hydrogels based on curdlan enriched with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) or Fe₃O₄-based heterostructures and poly(L-DOPA) (PLD). Some of the prepared modified hydrogels were nontoxic, relatively hemocompatible, and showed high antibacterial potential and the ability to convert energy with heat generation. Therefore, the proposed hydrogels may have potential applications in temperature-controlled regenerative processes as well as in oncology therapies as a matrix of increased functionality for multiple medical purposes. The presence of PLD in the curdlan hydrogel network reduced the release of the NPs but slightly increased the hydrogel's hemolytic properties. This should be taken into account during the selection of the final hydrogel application.

Synthesis and Characterization of SPIONs Encapsulating Polydopamine Nanoparticles and Their Test for Aqueous Cu2+ Ion Removal

The removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, aromatic compounds, dyes, pesticides and pharmaceuticals, from water is still an open challenge. Many methods have been developed and exploited for the purification of water from contaminants, including photocatalytic degradation, biological treatment, adsorption and chemical precipitation. Absorption-based techniques are still considered among the most efficient and commonly used approaches thanks to their operational simplicity. In recent years, polydopamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles have emerged for the uptake of heavy metals in water treatment, since they combine specific affinity towards pollutants and magnetic separation capacity. In this context, this work focuses on the synthesis of polydopamine (PDA)-coated Super Paramagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (PDA@SPIONs) as adsorbents for Cu²⁺ ions, designed to serve as functional nanostructures for the removal of Cu²⁺ from water by applying a magnetic field. The synthetic parameters, including the amount of SPIONs and PDA, were thoroughly investigated to define their effects on the nanostructure features and properties. Subsequently, the ability of the magnetic nanostructures to bind metal ions was assessed on Cu²⁺-containing solutions. A systematic investigation of the prepared functional nanostructures was carried out by means of complementary spectroscopic, morphological and magnetic techniques. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) measurements were performed in order to estimate the Cu²⁺ binding ability. The overall results indicate that these nanostructures hold great promise for future bioremediation applications.

A novel voltammetric amaranth sensor based on screen printed electrode modified with polypyrrole nanotubes

Azo dyes are the most used type of dye in the textile industry. Some of these dyes have the potential to be extremely toxic to both human health and the environment. The purpose of this study was to develope an electrochemical sensor for detection of amaranth. The electrochemical sensor based on the modification of a screen-printed electrode via polypyrrole nanotubes (PPy NTs/SPE) for detection of amaranth was developed. The preparation of PPy NTs was performed through the pyrrole monomer oxidation with iron (III) chloride in exposure to methyl orange as structure-guiding agent. Findings exhibited an excellent electrocatalytic activity of as-fabricated sensor for amaranth detection. Our sensor under the optimized circumstances also had a broad linear dynamic range (between 0.03 μM and 290.0 μM) and a narrow limit of detection (0.01 μM) towards the amaranth detection. Moreover, the proposed sensor could practically and successfully determine the amaranth content present in the real food specimens, with acceptable recovery rates.

Smart and Multi-Functional Magnetic Nanoparticles for Cancer Treatment Applications: Clinical Challenges and Future Prospects

Iron oxide nanoparticle (IONPs) have become a subject of interest in various biomedical fields due to their magnetism and biocompatibility. They can be utilized as heat mediators in magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) or as contrast media in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound (US). In addition, their high drug-loading capacity enabled them to be therapeutic agent transporters for malignancy treatment. Hence, smartening them allows for an intelligent controlled drug release (CDR) and targeted drug delivery (TDD). Smart magnetic nanoparticles (SMNPs) can overcome the impediments faced by classical chemo-treatment strategies, since they can be navigated and release drug via external or internal stimuli. Recently, they have been synchronized with other modalities, e.g., MRI, MHT, US, and for dual/multimodal theranostic applications in a single platform. Herein, we provide an overview of the attributes of MNPs for cancer theranostic application, fabrication procedures, surface coatings, targeting approaches, and recent advancement of SMNPs. Even though MNPs feature numerous privileges over chemotherapy agents, obstacles remain in clinical usage. This review in particular covers the clinical predicaments faced by SMNPs and future research scopes in the field of SMNPs for cancer theranostics.

Potential of sodium dodecyl sulfate micellar solutions as eluents in magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with polydopamine-coated magnetite nanoparticles. Application to antidepressant drugs

In this paper, the potential of micellar solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as eluents in dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) using polydopamine-coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs) for the extraction and preconcentration of seven basic drugs (bupropion, citalopram, fluoxetine, mianserin, nomifensine, trimipramine, and viloxazine) is explored for the first time (to the best to our knowledge) and compared with conventional hydro-organic eluents. The impact of the sample solution pH, Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs and PDA coating amounts and extraction time on the extraction efficiency (EE), as well as the composition of the eluent on the overall efficiency (OE) are studied. Under the selected experimental conditions (50 mg of Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs, 100 μL of 1 M NH₃, 5 min of extraction time and 0.15 M SDS at pH 2.6 as eluent), EE and OE values were higher than 90% for all compounds and for the most hydrophobic compounds (trimipramine, fluoxetine and mianserin), respectively. The results shown in this paper demonstrate the suitability of Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs as a sorbent for the extraction of antidepressants as well as the advantages of using SDS micellar solutions over classic hydro-organic eluents containing methanol, acetonitrile or tetrahydrofuran. Finally, the stability and reusability of the Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs is proven.

Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: From Design to Applications

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have been extensively investigated due to their applications in various fields such as biomedicine, sensing, and environmental remediation. However, they need to be coated with a suitable material in order to make them biocompatible and to add new functionalities on their surface. This review is intended to give a comprehensive overview of recent advantages and applications of iron oxide nanoparticles coated by polydopamine film. The synthesis method of magnetic nanoparticles, their functionalization with bioinspired materials and (in particular) with polydopamine are discussed. Finally, some interesting applications of polydopamine-coated magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles will be pointed out.

Magnetic porous carbons derived from iron-based metal-organic framework loaded with glucose for effective extraction of synthetic organic dyes in drinks

The conversion of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to porous carbon has attracted extensive attention for developing multifunctional adsorbent materials. Herein, we demonstrated a facile method to prepare magnetic porous carbon via calcinating MIL-101(Fe) precursor loaded with glucose at 700 °C in an N₂ atmosphere. The obtained magnetic porous carbon (MPCG) contained plenty of oxygen-containing functional groups and exhibited an enlarged specific surface area (177.7 m²/g) compared with its precursor (41.2 m²/g). In addition, MPCG can be easily separated from the matrix by a magnet. Benefitting from these advantages, the magnetic porous carbon exhibited high affinity toward four synthetic organic dyes (amaranth, ponceau 4R, sunset yellow, and lemon yellow) in an aqueous solution. Moreover, the adsorbent can be applied to quantitatively detect synthetic organic dyes in drinks coupled with chromatography. A new magnetic solid-phase extraction method for dye analysis yielded reasonable linearity (r □ 0.99), low limits of detection (0.047-0.076 μg/L), and good precision within the analyte concentration range of 0.25-50 μg/L.

[Determination of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone residues in fish by polydopamine nanofiber mat based solid phase extraction combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry]

Tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones are common antibacterial drugs used in aquaculture, and their residues may pose a risk to human health. The low concentration of drug residues and complex matrixes such as fats and proteins in aquatic products necessitate the urgent development of efficient sample pretreatment methods. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is the most common sample pretreatment method, in which the core is an adsorbent. Compared with traditional SPE adsorbents, nanofiber mat (NFsM) has more interaction sites because of their large specific surface area. Furthermore, NFsMs modified with specific functional groups can significantly improve the extraction efficiency of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. Polydopamine (PDA) is spontaneously synthesized by the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine-hydrochloride in alkaline solutions (pH>7.5). Because of its rich amino and catechol groups, PDA can form π-π stacking, electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding interactions with target molecules. By exploiting the above advantages, polystyrene (PS) NFsM, as a template, was prepared by the electrostatic spinning method, and PDA-PS NFsM was obtained by functional modification of PDA through self-polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the synthesized PS NFsM and PDA-PS NFsM. It was proved that PDA was successfully modified on the PS NFsM, with the SEM images revealing a rough outer core shell structure and an inner honeycomb structure. Subsequently, the handmade SPE column with PDA-PS NFsM was completed. A novel and efficient screening analytical method based on PDA-PS NFsM for the simultaneous determination of three tetracyclines (tetracycline (TET), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC)) and three fluoroquinolones (enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and norfloxacin (NOR)) in fish by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was established. The SPE procedure was optimized to develop an efficient method for sample preparation. Evaluate parameters including the amount of NFsM usage, ionic strength, flow rate of the sample solution, composition of eluent, and breakthrough volume were investigated. Only (20±0.1) mg of PDA-PS NFsM was sufficient to completely adsorb the targets, and the analytes retained on NFsM could be eluted by 1 mL of formic acid-ethyl acetate (containing 20% methanol) (1∶99, v/v). The residues were redissolved in 0.1 mL 10% methanol aqueous solution containing 0.2% formic acid. In addition, no adjustment of the pH and ionic strength of the sample solutions was required, and the breakthrough volume was 50 mL. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of the six target compounds were measured at 3 times and 10 times the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), respectively. The LODs and LOQs were 0.3-1.5 μg/kg and 1.0-5.0 μg/kg, respectively. The linear ranges of the six target compounds were LOQ-1000 μg/kg, and the coefficient of determination (R²) was greater than 0.999. To evaluate the accuracy and precision, blank spiked samples at three levels (low, medium, and high) were prepared for the recovery experiments, and each level with six parallel samples (n=6). The recoveries ranged from 94.37% to 102.82%, with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations of 2.38% to 8.06% and 4.10% to 9.10%, respectively. To evaluate the purification capacity of PDA-PS NFsM, the matrix effects before and after SPE were calculated and compared. Matrix effects before SPE were -12.98% to -38.68%. After the completion of SPEbased on PDA-PS NFsM, the matrix effect of each target analyte was significantly reduced to -2.15% to -7.36%, which proved the significant matrix removal capacity of PDA-PS NFsM. Finally, the practicality of this method was evaluated by using it to analyze real samples. This SPE method based on PDA-PS NFsM is efficient, practical, and environmentally friendly, and it has great potential for use in the routine monitoring of drug residues in fish.

Quantification of permitted synthetic colours in food by liquid chromatographic methods: a review on analytical methods and their performance

Colours, natural and synthetic, are substances which add or restore colour to a food after processing or storage. They are widely used by food manufacturers but may pose a potential risk to human health. Most food safety authorities set up regulations to limit the use of synthetic colours, and monitor their levels and consumption by the general public. Therefore, validated analytical methods are needed to fulfil this requirement. This review presents a comprehensive overview of various liquid chromatographic methods used for quantification of permitted synthetic colours in foods. Available analytical methods have been assessed for their fitness for purpose in terms of extraction, clean-up, liquid chromatographic separation, quantification and method performance. The advantages and disadvantages are given of available analytical methods for analysing 24 synthetic colours, permitted for use by different jurisdictions. Gaps in the knowledge and levels of validation are identified and recommendations made on further research to develop suitable methods for routine monitoring of these permitted synthetic colours.

Microfluidic-enabled versatile hyphenation of electromembrane extraction and thin film solid phase microextraction

In the present study, a versatile combination of electromembrane extraction (EME) with thin film solid phase microextraction (TF-SPME) was introduced using a microfluidic chip device. The device consisted of two single channels on two separate layers. The upper channel was dedicated to donor phase flow pass, while the beneath channel was used as a reservoir for stagnant acceptor solution. A slide of fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) was accommodated in the bottom of the acceptor phase channel. A thin layer of polyaniline was electrodeposited on the FTO surface to achieve the required thin film for TF-SPME. A stainless-steel wire was embedded in the donor phase channel and another wire was also attached to the FTO surface. The channels were separated by a piece of polypropylene membrane impregnated with 1-octanol and the whole chip was fixed with bolts and nuts. The driving force for the extraction was an 8 V direct current (DC) voltage applied across the supported liquid membrane (SLM). Under the influence of the electrical field, analytes immigrated from sample towards the acceptor phase and then adsorbed on the thin film of the solid phase. Finally, the analytes were desorbed by successive movement of a desorption solvent in the acceptor phase channel followed by injection of the desorption solution to HPLC-UV. The applicability of the proposed device was demonstrated by the determination of four synthetic food dyes: Amaranth, Ponceau 4R, Allura Red, and Carmoisine, as the model analytes. The effective parameters on the efficiency of the both EME and TF-SPME were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the microchip provided low LODs (1-10 μg L^-1), and a wide linear dynamic range of 10-1000 μg L^-1 for all analytes. The system also offered RSD values lower than 5.5% and acceptable reusability of the thin film for multiple extractions.

Current Trends in Fully Automated On-Line Analytical Techniques for Beverage Analysis

The determination of target analytes in complex matrices such as beverages requires a series of analytical steps to obtain a reliable analysis. This critical review presents the current trends in sample preparation techniques based on solid phase extraction miniaturization, automation and on-line coupling. Techniques discussed include solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in-tube solid-phase microextraction (in-tube SPME) and turbulent-flow chromatography (TFC). Advantages and limitations, as well as several of their main applications in beverage samples are discussed. Finally, fully automated on-line systems that involve extraction, chromatographic separation, and tandem mass spectrometry in one-step are introduced and critically reviewed.

Magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with the CuO/ZnO@Fe3O4-CNTs nanocomposite sorbent for the rapid pre-concentration of chlorogenic acid in the medical extract of plants, food, and water samples

CuO/ZnO@Fe₃O₄-CNTs-NC was synthesized and used as a sorbent in a MDMSPE method for the determination of chlorogenic acid in the medical extract of plants, food, and water samples.

A miniaturized solid-phase extraction adsorbent of calix[4]arene-functionalized graphene oxide/polydopamine-coated cellulose acetate for the analysis of aflatoxins in corn

A calix[4]arene-functionalized graphene oxide/polydopamine-coated cellulose acetate adsorbent was fabricated for the pre-concentration of aflatoxins. The highly porous developed adsorbent does not produce the high backpressure that normally occurs in particle-packed cartridges and its large surface area helps to improve adsorption. The highly efficient adsorption of aflatoxins by the hybrid adsorbent is facilitated via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic and π-π interactions. Polymerization time, amount of calix[4]arene-functionalized graphene oxide, type and volume of desorption solvent, sample pH, sample volume, and sample flow rate were optimized. The linearity of aflatoxin B1 was in the range of 0.01-10.0 μg/kg, aflatoxin B2 was in the range of 0.02-10.0 μg/kg and aflatoxin G1 and aflatoxin G2 were in the range of 0.050-10.0 μg/kg. The limits of detection were 0.01 μg/kg for aflatoxin B1, 0.02 μg/kg for aflatoxin B2 and 0.05 μg/kg for aflatoxin G1 and aflatoxin G2. The developed calix[4]arene-functionalized graphene oxide/polydopamine-coated cellulose acetate adsorbent was successfully utilized for the analysis of aflatoxins from corn samples and the extraction efficiency was satisfactory with obtained recoveries from 83.0 to 106.7%. Moreover, fabricated adsorbent is easy to prepare, inexpensive, and can be reused.

A bioinspired polydopamine approach toward the preparation of gold-modified magnetic nanoparticles for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of steroids in multiple samples

In this work, a simple, facile, and sensitive magnetic solid-phase extraction method was developed for the extraction and enrichment of three representative steroid hormones before high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. Gold-modified Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles, as novel magnetic adsorbents, were prepared by a rapid and environmentally friendly procedure in which polydopamine served as the reductant as well as the stabilizer for the gold nanoparticles, thus successfully avoiding the use of some toxic reagents. To obtain maximum extraction efficiency, several significant factors affecting the preconcentration steps, including the amount of adsorbent, extraction time, pH of the sample solution, and the desorption conditions, were optimized, and the enrichment factors for three steroids were all higher than 90. The validity of the established method was evaluated and good analytical characteristics were obtained. A wide linearity range (0.8-500 μg/L for all the analytes) was attained with good correlation (R²  ≥ 0.991). The low limits of detection were 0.20-0.25 μg/L, and the relative standard deviations ranged from 0.83 to 4.63%, demonstrating a good precision. The proposed method was also successfully applied to the extraction and analysis of steroids in urine, milk, and water samples with satisfactory results, which showed its reliability and feasibility in real sample analysis.

Synthesis of Fe3O4@CuS@Ni2P-CNTs magnetic nanocomposite for sonochemical-assisted sorption and pre-concentration of trace Allura Red from aqueous samples prior to HPLC-UV detection: CCD-RSM design

A simple procedure based on ultrasound-assisted (UA) dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) was applied for sorption of trace amount Allura Red (AR) in fruit juice and water samples. After loading process by UA-D-μ-SPE, the concentrated AR was eluted and monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet -visible detector (HPLC-UV). The best operational conditions were obtained as follows: pH = 3.0, 8 mg of the sorbent, sonication time of 4.5 min and 0.16 mL of THF as elution solvent. Under the optimum operational conditions, the present method was acceptable for AR quantification in the range of 1.0-5000 ng mL^-1. The repeatability based on RSD with the amount of 1.67-3.18%, low LOD (0.198 ng mL^-1) and LOQ (0.659 ng mL^-1) were obtained. The UA-D-μ-SPE-HPLC-UV method was successfully applied for trace quantification of AR from water and commercial fruit juice samples supplied from local supermarkets, and acceptable relative recoveries over the range of 97.7-105.4% with RSDs ≤5.50% were obtained.

Speciation analysis of mercury by dispersive solid-phase extraction coupled with capillary electrophoresis

A pretreatment method of dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) along with back-extraction followed by CE-UV detector was developed for the determination of mercury species in water samples. Sulfhydryl-functionalized SiO2 microspheres (SiO2 -SH) were synthesized and used as DSPE adsorbents for selective extraction and enrichment of three organic mercury species namely ethylmercury (EtHg), methylmercury (MeHg), and phenylmercury (PhHg), along with L-cysteine (L-cys) containing hydrochloric acid as back-extraction solvent. Several main extraction parameters were systematically investigated including sample pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction and back-extraction time, volume of eluent, and concentration of hydrochloric acid. Under optimal conditions, good linearity was achieved with correlation coefficients over 0.9990, in the range of 4-200 μg/L for EtHg, and 2-200 μg/L for MeHg and PhHg. The LODs were obtained of 1.07, 0.34, and 0.24 μg/L for EtHg, MeHg, and PhHg, respectively, as well as the LOQs were 3.57, 1.13, and 0.79 μg/L, respectively, with enrichment factors ranging from 109 to 184. Recoveries were attained with tap and lake water samples in a range of 62.3-107.2%, with relative standard deviations of 3.5-10.1%. The results proved that the method of SiO2 -SH based DSPE coupled with CE-UV was a simple, rapid, cost-effective, and eco-friendly alternative for the determination of mercury species in water samples.

3D hollow porous CdFe2O4 microspheres as viable materials for magnetic solid-phase extraction of azo colorants

3D magnetic hollow porous CdFe₂O₄ microspheres (3D MHPS-CdFe2O4) were prepared by a one-step and template-free hydrothermal method. The material was applied for magnetic solid phase extraction of three azo colorants (Acid Red, Congo Red, Sunset Yellow). Compared to conventional CdFe₂O₄ nanoparticles, the new 3D material exhibits superior extraction capability because of its unique hollow porous structure, high specific surface area, and the strong interaction between 3D microspheres and the colorants. A magnetic solid phase extraction (MPSE) combined with HPLC was established for simultaneous detection of the three azo colorants in food samples. Under optimum conditions, the detection limits are 0.54-1.00 ng mL^-1, and good recoveries of 87.0-100.7% were obtained with spiked samples, with relative standard deviation of ≤ 3.8%. The combination of using the new 3D material and MPSE-HPLC results in an efficient, sensitive and inexpensive method for simultaneous determination of such colorants. Gold Nanorods as Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates for Rapid and Sensitive Analysis of Allura Red and Sunset Yellow in Beverages

Synthetic colorants in food can be a potential threat to human health. In this study, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with gold nanorods as substrates is proposed to analyze allura red and sunset yellow in beverages. The gold nanorods with different aspect ratios were synthesized, and their long-term stability, SERS activity, and the effect of the different salts on the SERS signal were investigated. The results demonstrate that gold nanorods have a satisfactory stability (stored up to 28 days). SERS coupled with gold nanorods exhibit stronger sensitivity. MgSO₄ was chosen to improve the SERS signal of sunset yellow, and no salts could enhance the SERS signal of allura red. The lowest concentration was 0.10 mg/L for both colorant standard solutions. The successful prediction results using SERS were much closer to those obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography for the sample in beverages. SERS combined with gold nanorods shows potential for analyzing food colorants and other food additives as a rapid, convenient, and sensitive method.

Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymers with Fragment Template for Identification of Pulsatilla Saponin Metabolites in Rat Feces with UPLC-Q-TOF-MS

In this work, a modified pretreatment method using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) was successfully applied to study the metabolites of an important botanical with ultraperformance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The MMIPs for glucoside-specific adsorption was used to identify metabolites of Pulsatilla chinensis in rat feces. Polymers were prepared by using Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as the supporting matrix, d-glucose as fragment template, and dopamine as the functional monomer and cross-linker. Results showed that MMIPs exhibited excellent extraction performance, large adsorption capacity (5.65 mg/g), fast kinetics (60 min), and magnetic separation. Furthermore, the MMIPs coupled with UPLC-Q-TOF-MS were successfully utilized for the identification of 17 compounds including 15 metabolites from the Pulsatilla saponin metabolic pool. This study provides a reliable protocol for the separation and identification of saponin metabolites in a complex biological sample, including those from herbal medicines.

Biosynthetic Mechanism of Luminescent ZnO Nanocrystals in the Mammalian Blood Circulation and Their Functionalization for Tumor Therapy

The biosynthesis of nanoparticles in bioreactors using microbial, plant, or animal cells is at the forefront of nanotechnology. We demonstrated for the first time that luminescent, water-soluble ZnO nanocrystals (bio-ZnO NCs) can be spontaneously biosynthesized in the mammalian blood circulation, not in cells, when animals were fed with Zn(CH₃COO)₂ aqueous solution. Serum albumin, rather than metallothioneins or glutathione, proved to play the pivotal role in biosynthesis. The bio-ZnO NCs were gradually taken up in the liver and degraded and excreted in the urine. Thus, we propose that in mammals such as rodents, bovinae, and humans, excess metal ions absorbed into the cardiovascular system via the intestine can be transformed into nanoparticles by binding to serum albumin, forming a "provisional metal-pool", to reduce the toxicity of free metal ions at high concentration and regulate metal homeostasis in the body. Furthermore, the bio-ZnO NCs, which showed favorable biocompatibility, were functionalized with the anticancer drug daunorubicin and effectively achieved controlled drug release mediated by intracellular glutathione in tumor xenograft mice.

Ultra-High-Throughput Analytical Strategy Based on UHPLC-DAD in Combination with Syringe Filtration for the Quantitation of Nine Synthetic Colorants in Beverages: Impacts of Syringe Membrane Types and Sample pH on Recovery

An ultra-high-throughput approach based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (UHPLC-DAD) in combination with simple syringe filtration was successfully developed and validated for the quantitation of nine synthetic colorants in beverages. The recoveries of the colorants from the beverages were found to be dramatically affected by the syringe filter membrane types and pH of the sample solution. The high recoveries of the nine colorants (92.7-105.9%) were achieved by syringe filtration with poly(vinylidene difluoride) membrane following the pH adjustment of sample solution at pH 7.0. The sample treatment procedure was very simple and took only 1 min. The fast chromatographic separation (1 min) of the nine synthetic colorants was achieved by UHPLC-DAD using a C18-core-shell column. This analytical approach (UHPLC-DAD combined with syringe filtration) took only approximately 3 min. The established method was ultrafast, sensitive, precise, accurate, and reliable. The method was successfully applied to rapidly determine the 9 colorants in 17 beverages.

Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction for the Analysis of Veterinary Drugs Applied to Food Samples: A Review

To achieve analytical success, it is necessary to develop thorough clean-up procedures to extract analytes from the matrix. Dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) has been used as a pretreatment technique for the analysis of several compounds. This technique is based on the dispersion of a solid sorbent in liquid samples in the extraction isolation and clean-up of different analytes from complex matrices. DSPE has found a wide range of applications in several fields, and it is considered to be a selective, robust, and versatile technique. The applications of dispersive techniques in the analysis of veterinary drugs in different matrices involve magnetic sorbents, molecularly imprinted polymers, carbon-based nanomaterials, and the Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method. Techniques based on DSPE permit minimization of additional steps such as precipitation, centrifugation, and filtration, which decreases the manipulation of the sample. In this review, we describe the main procedures used for synthesis, characterization, and application of this pretreatment technique and how it has been applied to food analysis.

Magnetic solid phase extraction with octahedral structured Fe3O4@SiO2@polydimethylsiloxane magnetic nanoparticles as the sorbent for determining benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes in water samples
