Abstract
Herein, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform was combined with an azo coupling reaction and an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes for the detection of histamine. The praseodymium oxide on aluminum alloy was successfully synthesized by the rare-earth-salt-solution boiling bath method and modified by stearic acid. Its surface exhibits a water contact angle (WCA) of 125.0°. Through the azo derivatization reaction with 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTA) diazonium salts, histamine can be converted into the derivatization product with higher Raman activity. The mixture of the derivatization product and β-cyclodextrin-modified Ag nanoparticles (β-CD-AgNPs) were dropped onto the surface of an aluminum alloy covered with a hydrophobic layer of praseodymium oxide and stearic acid complexes, and dried for SERS measurement. The intensity ratio between the SERS peaks at 1246 cm-1 and 1104 cm-1 (I1246/I1104) of the derivatization product was used for the quantification of histamine. Under the selected conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for this method were 7.2 nM (S/N = 3) and 24 nM (S/N = 10), respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of this method for the determination of 1 μM histamine was 6.1 % (n = 20). The method was also successfully used for the determination of histamine in fish samples with recoveries ranging from 92 % to 111 %. The present method is simple, sensitive, reliable, and may provide a new approach for preparing the composite hydrophobic layer that can enhance SERS signals through hydrophobic condensation effect. Meanwhile, it may have a promising future in the determination of small molecular compounds containing an imidazole ring.

Abstract
A highly sensitive, selective and recyclable histidine detection method based on magnetic Fe3O4@mTiO2 (M-TiO2) nanocomposites with SERRS was developed. Mesoporous M-TiO2 nanoparticles were functionalized with 4-aminothiophenol and then coupled with histidine through an azo coupling reaction in 5 min, producing the corresponding azo compound. The strong and specific SERRS response of the azo product allowed for ultrasensitive and selective detection for histidine with an M-TiO2 device loaded with Ag NPs due to the molecular resonance effect and plasmonic effect of Ag NPs under a 532 nm excitation laser. The sensitivity was further enhanced with the magnetic enrichment of M-TiO2. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 8.00 × 10-12 mol/L. The M-TiO2 demonstrated applicability towards histidine determination in human urine without any sample pretreatment. Additionally, the M-TiO2 device can be recycled for 3 cycles with the photodegradation of the azo product under UV irradiation due to TiO2-assisted and plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis. In summary, a multifunctional and recyclable M-TiO2 device was synthesized based on azo coupling and SERRS spectroscopy for ultra-sensitive and specific histidine sensing. In addition, the proposed system demonstrated the potential for the multiplex determination of toxic compounds in the fields of food safety, industrial production and environmental protection, which benefit from the fingerprint property and universality of SERRS.

Abstract
Synthetic antioxidants serve as essential protectors against oxidation and deterioration of edible oils, however, prudent evaluation is necessary regarding potential health risks associated with excessive intake. The direct adsorption of antioxidants onto conventional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is challenging due to the presence of phenolic hydroxyl groups in their molecular structures, resulting in weak Raman scattering signals and rendering direct SERS detection difficult. In this study, a diazo derivatization reaction was employed to enhance SERS signals by converting antioxidant molecules into azo derivatives, enabling the amplification of the weak Raman scattering signals through the strong vibrational modes induced by the N = N double bond. The resulting diazo derivatives were characterized using UV-visible absorption and infrared spectroscopy, confirming the occurrence of diazo derivatization of the antioxidants. The proposed method successfully achieved the rapid detection of three commonly used synthetic antioxidants, namely butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), and propyl gallate (PG) on interfacial self-assembled gold nanoparticles. Furthermore, rapid predictions of BHA, PG, and TBHQ within the concentration range of 1 × 10-6 to 2 × 10-3 mol/L were achieved by integrating a convolutional neural network model. The predictive range of this model surpassed the traditional quantitative method of manually selecting characteristic peaks, with linear coefficients (R2) of 0.9992, 0.9997, and 0.9997, respectively. The recovery of antioxidants in real soybean oil samples ranged from 73.0 % to 126.4 %. Based on diazo derivatization, the proposed SERS method eliminates the need for complex substrates and enables the analysis and determination of synthetic antioxidants in edible oils within 20 min, providing a convenient analytical approach for quality control in the food industry.

Abstract
We demonstrate for the first time the construction of a dual-mode biosensor for electrochemiluminescent (ECL) and electrochemical chiral recognition of l- and d-isomers of amino acids, with ferrocene (Fc) as both a signal enhancer and a signal tracer. With the dissolved oxygen as a coreactant, ZnIn2S4 acts as the ECL emitter to generate a weak cathodic ECL signal. Fc can enter into the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) cavity on ZnIn2S4-modified electrode as a result of host-guest interaction. Since Fc can promote H2O and O2 to produce abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) (e.g., O2·- and ·OH), the ECL signal of ZnIn2S4 can be further amplified with Fc as a coreaction accelerator. Meanwhile, Fc molecules on the β-CD/ZnIn2S4-modified electrode can be electrochemically oxidized to Fc+ to produce a remarkable oxidation peak current. When l-histidine (l-His) is present, the matching of the l-His configuration with the β-CD cavity leads to the entrance of more l-His into the cavity of β-CD than d-histidine (d-His), and the subsequent competence of l-His with Fc on the Fc/β-CD/ZnIn2S4-modified electrode induces the decrease in both Fc peak current and ZnIn2S4-induced ECL intensity. This dual-mode biosensor can efficiently discriminate l-His from d-His, and it can sensitively monitor l-His with a detection limit of 7.60 pM for ECL mode and 3.70 pM for electrochemical mode. Moreover, this dual-mode biosensor can selectively discriminate l-His from other l- and d-isomers (e.g., threonine, phenylalanine, and glutamic acid), with potential applications in the chiral recognition of nonelectroactive chiral compounds, bioanalysis, and disease diagnosis.

Abstract
Food poisoning caused by histamine ingestion is one of the prevalent allergies associated with fish consumption in the world. Reliable detection of histamine from fish by a portable platform was of urgent importance to food safety. A portable technology for on-site monitoring of histamine in tuna was established through combined azo-derivatized thin-layer chromatography (TLC) with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The real tuna meat sample was directly applied onto the portable sensor for the separation of histamine and azo-derivatizing of histamine was reacted on the TLC plate. The colorless histamine was visualized by azo-derivatization after spraying Pauly reagent onto the diatomite TLC plate. The molecule information and concentration of the histamine was measured and calculated by SERS spectra. Diatomite TLC plate was capable of separating histamine with 1.32 × 10-7 M of Au colloid for the SERS enhancement. Accordingly, the limit of detection of histamine from mixture sample could achieve 2.8 × 10-4 ppm. These results indicated that the portable azo-derivatized TLC-SERS sensor not only visualizes the histamine but also improves the intensity of the Raman spectra. The azo-derivatized TLC-SERS sensor could be applied for rapid, convenient, and ultrasensitive point-of-care sensing of histamine in fish.

Abstract
Coupled with an azo coupling reaction, a simple, rapid, sensitive, and effective surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) detection method for benzocaine was developed. In our study, benzocaine which is used clinically as a local anesthetic was derived with p-aminothiophenol into a corresponding azo product within 5 min, resulting in a strong SERRS response with the simple addition of Ag NPs excited with a 532 nm laser. The linear correlation between SERRS intensity of dominant bands and logarithm of benzocaine concentration was investigated for quantitative determination. The method reached a limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.139 and 0.0788 μg/mL calculated with two peak intensity ratios (I1568/I2260 and I1331/I2260), which is comparable to most studies reported previously, and meanwhile had superiority in simplicity and rapidness. The quantitative measurements for pharmaceutical preparations with benzocaine were conducted without complex extraction and enrichment processes. It was indicated that the SERRS assay combined with azo derivatization reaction has implications for practical applications in more complicated systems involving biological samples, in which appropriate and simplified pretreatments were conducted to remove interfering components.

Abstract
A specific surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay for dopamine (DA) based on an azo derivatization reaction is proposed for the first time by preparation of p-aminothiophenol (PATP)-modified composite SERS substrate, composed of metal-organic framework (MIL-101) decorated with Au and Ag nanoparticles. As the result, the SERS method for detection of the azo reaction between PATP and DA exhibits superior sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. A reasonable linearity in the range 10-6 to 10-10 mol∙L-1 is achieved, and the limit of detection is 1.2 × 10-12 mol∙L-1. The reactive SERS assay is free from interference in complex physiological fluid. The feasibility of the proposed SERS method for the detection of DA levels in fetal bovine serum (FBS) samples and human serum samples is validated by HPLC-MS methods, displaying promising application potential in early disease diagnosis.

Abstract
Herein, a facile and fast surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method with ratiometric strategy was developed for detection of 4-methylimidazole (4-MI). Via a chemical derivatization reaction with 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMTA) diazonium salts, 4-MI could be converted to SERS-sensitive species. The SERS intensity ratio between the peaks at 1243 cm-1 and 1110 cm-1 (I1243/I1110) was used for the quantification of 4-MI. In addition, the method sensitivity was further improved by the aggregation of beta-cyclodextrin-modified Ag nanoparticles (beta-CD-AgNPs). Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for 4-MI were 1.7 nM (S/N = 3) and 5.7 nM (S/N = 10), respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for 0.5 μM 4-MI was 8.2% (n = 20). This method was successfully used for the determination of 4-MI in cola samples with recoveries ranging from 92% to 106%. The present method is convenient, sensitive, selective, reliable and may have a promising application in determination of the compounds with an imidazole ring containing active hydrogen atoms.

Abstract
Analysis of peptide biomarkers of pathological states of the organism is often a serious challenge, due to a very complex composition of the cell and insufficient sensitivity of the current analytical methods (including mass spectrometry). One of the possible ways to overcome this problem is sample enrichment by capturing the selected components using a specific solid support. Another option is increasing the detectability of the desired compound by its selective tagging. Appropriately modified and immobilized peptides can be used for these purposes. In addition, they find application in studying the specificity and activity of proteolytic enzymes. Immobilized heterocyclic peptide conjugates may serve as metal ligands, to form complexes used as catalysts or analytical markers. In this review, we describe various applications of immobilized peptides, including selective capturing of cysteine-containing peptides, tagging of the carbonyl compounds to increase the sensitivity of their detection, enrichment of biological samples in deoxyfructosylated peptides, and fishing out of tyrosine–containing peptides by the formation of azo bond. Moreover, the use of the one-bead-one-compound peptide library for the analysis of substrate specificity and activity of caspases is described. Furthermore, the evolution of immobilization from the solid support used in peptide synthesis to nanocarriers is presented. Taken together, the examples presented here demonstrate immobilized peptides as a multifunctional tool, which can be successfully used to solve multiple analytical problems.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to establish a novel method for the determination of N-methylaniline (NMA) based on azo coupling reaction in infant pacifiers prepared with food contact silicone materials by combining thin layer chromatography (TLC) with surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS). TLC was used to separate the azo reaction products to confirm the component spot of azo compound, then the spot of azo compound mixed with silver sol on the TLC plate was qualitatively detected by SERRS. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method is as low as 0.50 ppm for NMA. The influence of sample matrix about the TLC-SERRS detection of NMA was investigated by experiment of simulated positive sample, and the NMA in infant pacifiers exposed to silica gel products was detected. The method of TLC-SERRS for the determination of NMA in infant pacifiers prepared with food contact silicone materials was established, and the real samples were detected. Compared with the methods ever reported, the method has the advantages of high sensitivity, specificity and low cost. It provides a new reference method for establishing a safety system for food contact silicone materials.

Abstract
This research used a digital image colorimetry (DIC) method to detect carbaryl in food samples using effervescence-assisted liquid phase microextraction based on solidification of switchable hydrophilicity solvent combined with a microfluidic thread-based analytical device (EA-LPME-SSHS-μTAD). 1-naphthol, the hydrolysate of carbaryl, was extracted into octanoic acid by the adjustment of pH values of the sample solution and separated through solidification in an ice bath. Then 1-naphthol contained in the extracted solution was coupled with 4-methoxybenzenediazonlum tetrafluoroborate (MBDF) fixed on the μTAD to produce tangerine compounds. The inherent colour variation was captured by a smartphone and processed to calculate the intensity (I). Under the optimal conditions, the limit of quantification was within 0.020-0.027 mg kg-1. The recovery was varied in the range from 92.3% to 105.9% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 5%. The developed method provides an alternative strategy to extract and detect pesticides for food samples.

Abstract
A novel, simple, and highly sensitive method was developed to detect the concentration of tyrosine-derived azo dye indirectly using silver nanocubes (AgNCs) as a substrate on a super-hydrophobic silver film by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Diazotization-coupling reaction occurred between diazonium ions and the phenolic tyrosine, resulting in three new typical peaks in the SERS spectrum of the azo dye that was formed on the AgNCs, indicating strong SERS activity. Subsequently, the limit of detection of this approach was as low as 10-12 M for tyrosine. Moreover, the SERS intensities of the three typical SERS signals of the analyte were linearly correlated with the logarithm of concentration of the Tyrosine. The proposed method shows great potential for tyrosine detection in the urine samples of normal humans.

Abstract
A tripodal fluorescent probe L1 armed with Rhodamine B and 1-naphthaleneisothiocyanates was prepared in high yield. A study of the recognition properties revealed that probe L1 exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards Al3+ through a "FRET" fluorescence response and colorimetric response with low detection limits of the order of 10-8 M. Meanwhile, probe L1 also possessed high recognition ability for I- through fluorescence decay, which given there are comparatively few selective fluorescent probes for I-, is significant. Furthermore, the complexation mechanisms were fully investigated by spectral titrations, 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations and mass spectrometry. The utility of probe L1 as a biosensor in living cells (PC3 cells) towards Al3+ ions has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
In the present work we study the surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) and fluorescence (SEF) spectra of a general model molecule confined in metallic dimers consisting of Ag, Au and hybrid AuAg nanoparticles (NPs). The electromagnetic (EM) enhancement factors were simulated by the generalized Mie scatting method and the scattering cross section of the molecules were obtained by density-matrix calculations. The influence of the size of the NPs and the separation between the dimer on the Raman scattering and fluorescence were systematically studied and analyzed in detail. It was found that the SERRS mainly related to EM enhancement and the SEF depended on the competition between EM enhancement and quantum yield, both of which could be controlled by tuning the radius and separation of the metallic dimers. The optimal radius of the NPs for SERRS were found to be around 30 nm for AgNPs, 40 nm for AuNPs and 50 nm for hybrid AuAgNPs. The strongest Raman enhancement as predicted by the theoretical simulations were 6.2 × 1010, 1.5 × 107 and 5.2 × 108 for the three types of structures, respectively. These results could offer valuable information for the design of metallic substrates for surface enhanced Raman and fluorescence measurements.
