Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic mechanism of methylene blue dye adsorption on synthesized activated carbon

The treatment of methylene blue (MB) dye wastewater through the adsorption process has been a subject of extensive research. However, a comprehensive understanding of the thermodynamic aspects of dye solution adsorption is lacking. Previous studies have primarily focused on enhancing the adsorption capacity of methylene blue dye. This study aimed to develop an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for treating methylene blue dye wastewater and to gain insights into the thermodynamics and kinetics of the adsorption process for optimization. An adsorbent with selective methylene blue dye adsorption capabilities was synthesized using rice straw as the precursor. Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the adsorption isotherms and models under various process conditions, aiming to bridge gaps in previous research and enhance the understanding of adsorption mechanisms. Several adsorption isotherm models, including Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich, were applied to theoretically describe the adsorption mechanism. Equilibrium thermodynamic results demonstrated that the calculated equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) aligned well with the experimentally obtained data. These findings of the study provide valuable insights into the thermodynamics and kinetics of methylene blue dye adsorption, with potential applications beyond this specific dye type. The utilization of rice straw as an adsorbent material presents a novel and cost-effective approach for MB dye removal from wastewater.

Advances in the adsorption of heavy metal ions in water by UiO-66 composites

The innovative adsorbents known as the Metal-organic Framework (MOFs) had a high specific surface area, various structural types, and good chemical stability. MOFs have been produced through hydrothermal, mechanochemical, microwave-assisted, gelation, and other synthesis methods, and the solvothermal process is one of them that researchers frequently utilize. The UiO materials have a more comprehensive application potential than different subtypes of MOFs among the numerous MOFs that have been synthesized. The synthesis of MOFs and their composites, as well as the adsorption characteristics of UiO materials in the adsorption of various heavy metal ions, have all been examined and summarized in this study.

Surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of metal-organic framework nanocomposites

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites have recently gained intensive attention for biosensing and disease therapy applications owing to their outstanding physiochemical properties. However, the direct growth of MOF nanocomposites is usually hindered by the mismatched lattice in the interface between the MOF and other nanocomponents. Surface ligands, molecules with surfactant-like properties, are demonstrated to exhibit the robust capability to modify the interfacial properties of nanomaterials and can be utilized as a powerful strategy for the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites. Besides this, surface ligands also exhibit significant functions in the morphological control and functionalization of MOF nanocomposites, thus greatly enhancing their performance in biomedical applications. In this review, the surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of MOF nanocomposites are comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites is discussed according to the diverse roles of surface ligands. Then, MOF nanocomposites with different properties are listed with their applications in biosensing and disease therapy. Finally, current challenges and further directions of MOF nanocomposites are presented to motivate the development of MOF nanocomposites with elaborate structures, enriched functions, and excellent application prospects.

Photocatalytic degradation effect and mechanism of Karenia mikimotoi by non-noble metal modified TiO2 loading onto copper metal organic framework (SNP-TiO2@Cu-MOF) under visible light

In this study, the SNP-TiO₂@Cu-MOF composite was prepared successfully by loading non-noble metal modified TiO₂ (SNP-TiO₂) on the surface of copper metal organic skeleton (Cu-MOF), and compared the inactivation efficiency of different photocatalysts to Karenia mikimotoi (K. mikimotoi) under visible light. The obtained photocatalyst had the characteristic crystal faces of Cu-MOF and SNP- TiO₂, and contained functional groups such as Cu-O, -COOH, N-O, P-O, etc., which indicated the structural stability of the photocatalyst. The band gap of SNP-TiO₂@Cu-MOF composite was 2.82 eV, and it had great light absorption ability in visible light region. It was proved to be a mesoporous adsorption material, which had a huge specific surface area (245 m²/g). Compared with other photocatalysts, SNP-TiO₂@Cu-MOF composite showed the strongest photocatalytic activity. When the concentration of composite material was set to 100 mg/L and the exposure time was 6 h, the visible light photocatalytic inactivation efficiency of K. mikimotoi was 93.75 %. By measuring various metabolic indexes of K. mikimotoi under the action of different photocatalysts for 1 h, it was confirmed that cell inactivation was due to the increased membrane permeability and degradation of photosynthetic pigments and main life proteins. This research showed that SNP-TiO₂@Cu-MOF composite material was full of great potential and application prospect in controlling the outbreak of eutrophication.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

Recent developments in MOF and MOF based composite as potential adsorbents for removal of aqueous environmental contaminants

With the growth of globalization which has been the primary cause of water pollution, it is utmost necessary for us living being to have access to clean water for the purpose of drinking, washing and various other useful applications. With the purpose of future security and to restore our ecological balance, it is essential to give much significance towards the removal of unwanted toxic contaminants from our water resources. In this regard adsorptive removal of toxic pollutants from wastewater with porous adsorbent is regarded as one of the most promising way for water decontamination process. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) comprising of uniformly arranged pores, abundant active sites and containing an easily tunable structure has aroused as a promising material for adsorbent to remove the unwanted contaminants from water sources. The adsorption of pollutants by the different MOFs surface are driven by various interactions including π-π, acid-base, electrostatic and H-bonding etc. On the other hand, the removal of various contaminants by MOFs is influenced by various factors including pH, temperature and initial concentration. In this review we will specifically discuss the adsorptive removal of different organic and inorganic pollutants present in our water systems with the use of MOFs as adsorbent along with the various factors and interaction mechanism manipulating the adsorption behaviour.

Using recycled coffee grounds for the synthesis of ZIF-8@BC to remove Congo red in water

Around 6.6 million tons of spent coffee is produced per year, resulting in resources loss and potential environmental risks. Hence, a green technique is required to reuse the spent coffee grains. In this study, coffee grounds were burnt at 900 °C to generate the biochar (BC) for the synthesis of the porous adsorbent (ZIF-8 @BC) by growing ZIF-8 on the surface of BC. We applied the well-prepared ZIF-8 @BC to remove Congo red (CR) in water. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 @BC on Congo red in water was up to 1080.4 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that of many different types of BCs reported in previous studies. The reasons for its highly efficient adsorption of CR probably was attributed to metal ions and coordinatively unsaturated sites in the material. Also, BC enabled the less aggregation of ZIF-8 to provide sufficient specific surface area for CR adsorption. From the analysis of the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, the adsorption of ZIF-8 @BC on CR was a homogeneously chemical adsorption process regulated by electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking and metal coordination.

Adsorptive remediation of environmental pollutants using magnetic hybrid materials as platform adsorbents

Effective separation and remediation of environmentally hazardous pollutants are burning areas of research because of a constant increase in environmental pollution problems. An extensive number of emerging contaminants in the environmental matrices result in serious health consequences in animals, humans, and plants, even at trace levels. Therefore, it is of paramount significance to quantify these undesirable pollutants, even at a very low concentration, from the natural environment. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has recently achieved huge attention because of its strong magnetic domain and easy separation through an external magnetic field compared with simple solid-phase extraction. Therefore, MSPE appeared the most promising technique for removing and pre-concentration of emerging pollutants at trace level. Compared to the normal solid-phase extraction, MSPE as magnetic hybrid adsorbents offers the unique advantages of distinct nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials. It can exhibit efficient dispersion and rapid recycling when applying to a very complex matrix. This review highlights the possible environmental applications of magnetic hybrid nanoscale materials as effective MSPE sorbents to remediate a diverse range of environmentally toxic pollutants. We believe this study tends to evoke a variety of research thrust that may lead to novel remediation approaches in the forthcoming years.

On the use of metal-organic frameworks for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples

The determination of trace metals and organic contaminants in environmental samples, such as water, air, soil, and sediment, is until today a challenging process for the analytical chemistry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel porous nanomaterials that are composed of metal ions and an organic connector. These materials are gaining more and more attention due to their superior characteristics, such as high surface area, tunable pore size, mechanical and thermal stability, luminosity, and charge transfer ability between metals and ligands. Among the various applications of MOFs are gas storage, separation, catalysis, and drug delivery. Recently, MOFs have been successfully introduced in the field of sample preparation for analytical chemistry and they have been used for sample pretreatment of various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of MOFs as novel adsorbents for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples.

Trends in Nanotechnology and Its Potentialities to Control Plant Pathogenic Fungi: A Review

Approximately 15-18% of crops losses occur as a result of animal pests, while weeds and microbial diseases cause 34 and 16% losses, respectively. Fungal pathogens cause about 70-80% losses in yield. The present strategies for plant disease control depend transcendently on agrochemicals that cause negative effects on the environment and humans. Nanotechnology can help by reducing the negative impact of the fungicides, such as enhancing the solubility of low water-soluble fungicides, increasing the shelf-life, and reducing toxicity, in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. Despite many advantages of the utilization of nanoparticles, very few nanoparticle-based products have so far been produced in commercial quantities for agricultural purposes. The shortage of commercial uses may be associated with many factors, for example, a lack of pest crop host systems usage and the insufficient number of field trials. In some areas, nanotechnology has been advanced, and the best way to be in touch with the advances in nanotechnology in agriculture is to understand the major aspect of the research and to address the scientific gaps in order to facilitate the development which can provide a rationale of different nanoproducts in commercial quantity. In this review, we, therefore, described the properties and synthesis of nanoparticles, their utilization for plant pathogenic fungal disease control (either in the form of (a) nanoparticles alone, that act as a protectant or (b) in the form of a nanocarrier for different fungicides), nano-formulations of agro-nanofungicides, Zataria multiflora, and ginger essential oils to control plant pathogenic fungi, as well as the biosafety and limitations of the nanoparticles applications.

Endophytic Nanotechnology: An Approach to Study Scope and Potential Applications

Nanotechnology has become a very advanced and popular form of technology with huge potentials. Nanotechnology has been very well explored in the fields of electronics, automobiles, construction, medicine, and cosmetics, but the exploration of nanotecnology's use in agriculture is still limited. Due to climate change, each year around 40% of crops face abiotic and biotic stress; with the global demand for food increasing, nanotechnology is seen as the best method to mitigate challenges in disease management in crops by reducing the use of chemical inputs such as herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides. The use of these toxic chemicals is potentially harmful to humans and the environment. Therefore, using NPs as fungicides/ bactericides or as nanofertilizers, due to their small size and high surface area with high reactivity, reduces the problems in plant disease management. There are several methods that have been used to synthesize NPs, such as physical and chemical methods. Specially, we need ecofriendly and nontoxic methods for the synthesis of NPs. Some biological organisms like plants, algae, yeast, bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi have emerged as superlative candidates for the biological synthesis of NPs (also considered as green synthesis). Among these biological methods, endophytic microorganisms have been widely used to synthesize NPs with low metallic ions, which opens a new possibility on the edge of biological nanotechnology. In this review, we will have discussed the different methods of synthesis of NPs, such as top-down, bottom-up, and green synthesis (specially including endophytic microorganisms) methods, their mechanisms, different forms of NPs, such as magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs), copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs), chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs), β-d-glucan nanoparticles (GNPs), and engineered nanoparticles (quantum dots, metalloids, nonmetals, carbon nanomaterials, dendrimers, and liposomes), and their molecular approaches in various aspects. At the molecular level, nanoparticles, such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) and RNA-interference molecules, can also be used as molecular tools to carry genetic material during genetic engineering of plants. In plant disease management, NPs can be used as biosensors to diagnose the disease.

Metal-organic frameworks for food applications: A review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are high surface-to-volume ratio crystalline hybrid porous coordination materials composed of metal ions as nodes and organic linkers. The goal of this paper was to provide an updated and comprehensive state-of-the-art review of MOFs for different food applications such as active food contact materials, antimicrobial nanocarriers, controlled release nanosystems for active compounds, nanofillers for food packaging materials, food nanoreactors, food substance nanosensors, stabilizers and immobilizers for active compounds and enzymes, and extractors of food contaminants. Extraction and sensing of several food contaminants have been the main food applications of MOFs. The other applications listed above require further investigation, as they are at an early stage. However, interesting results are being reported for these other fields. Finally, an important limitation of MOFs has been the use of non-renewable feedstocks for their synthesis, but this has recently been solved through the manufacture and use of γ-cyclodextrin-based MOFs.

Preparation of magnetic MOFs for use as a solid-phase extraction absorbent for rapid adsorption of triazole pesticide residues in fruits juices and vegetables

Detection of low levels of triazole fungicides in agricultural product matrices is important. Although several detection methods have been developed, all have some drawbacks, such as being time-consuming, requiring complex sample pretreatment, and consuming large volumes of organic solvents. There is an urgent need for a simple and rapid detection method for triazole fungicides. In this study, the adsorbent composite material magnetic MOFs based on Fe₃O₄-MWCNT was synthesized by in-situ polymerization at room temperature, and was applied to extract triazole pesticides from fruits and vegetables. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used for quantification. Under optimized conditions, the constructed detection method showed a low detection (LOD) of 0.52-1.83 μg/L (S/N = 3) and wide linear range of 5.00-500.00 μg/L for triazole fungicides in the fruit and vegetable samples. The method recovery for spiked fungicides (10, 50, and 100 μg/L) in cabbage, spinach, orange juice, and apple juice ranged from 62.80% to 94.20%. The constructed detection method has a lower detection limit than previously reported methods and has a higher sensitivity for triazole pesticide residues in complex matrices.

Synthesis of Magnetic Metal-Organic Frame Material and Its Application in Food Sample Preparation

A variety of contaminants in food is an important aspect affecting food safety. Due to the presence of its trace amounts and the complexity of food matrix, it is very difficult to effectively separate and accurately detect them. The magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites with different structures and functions provide a new choice for the purification of food matrix and enrichment of trace targets, thus providing a new direction for the development of new technologies in food safety detection with high sensitivity and efficiency. The MOF materials composed of inorganic subunits and organic ligands have the advantages of regular pore structure, large specific surface area and good stability, which have been thoroughly studied in the pretreatment of complex food samples. MMOF materials combined different MOF materials with various magnetic nanoparticles, adding magnetic characteristics to the advantages of MOF materials, which are in terms of material selectivity, biocompatibility, easy operation and repeatability. Combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) technique, MMOF materials have been widely used in the food pretreatment. This article introduced the new preparation strategies of different MMOF materials, systematically summarizes their applications as SPE adsorbents in the pretreatment of food contaminants and analyzes and prospects their future application prospects and development directions.

A "half" core-shell magnetic nanohybrid composed of zeolitic imidazolate framework and graphitic carbon nitride for magnetic solid-phase extraction of sulfonylurea herbicides from water samples followed by LC-MS/MS detection

A "half" core-shell g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄@ZIF-8 nanohybrid, in which Fe₃O₄ and zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) constructed the core-shell structure, was successfully fabricated via a versatile in situ growth strategy. This nanohybrid was employed for simultaneous magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of trace levels of fifteen target sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) in environmental water samples followed by LC-MS/MS detection. C₃N₄ nanosheets were first prepared by liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C₃N₄, after which Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were uniformly deposited onto the surface of C₃N₄ nanosheets, and ZIF-8 nanoparticles were grown on the surface of g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄ by anchoring Zn²⁺ on g-C₃N₄/Fe₃O₄. Owing to the synergistic effect, the hybridization of C₃N₄ and ZIF-8 endowed the nanohybrid with higher multi-target adsorption ability for SUHs compared to pure C₃N₄ or ZIF-8. The separation as well as the enrichment processes were facilitated using Fe₃O₄ as a magnetic core. The influence of various parameters on MSPE efficiency, including adsorbent dosage, extraction time, solution pH, and desorption solvent and its volume, was investigated in detail. Under optimal conditions, the MSPE coupled with LC-MS/MS exhibited good linearity ranging from 0.5 to 100 μg L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R²) ≥ 0.9919, high sensitivity with low limits of detection (LODs) of 0.005-0.141 μg L^-1 and satisfactory recoveries of 67.4-105.5% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 9.8%. These results indicate that this method is reliable for the determination of SUHs in different matrices and the in situ growth strategy is a promising approach for constructing effective adsorbents. Polyamine-Modified Magnetic Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites and HPLC-MS/MS Allow the Determination of Two Indolic Derivatives in Strong-Aroma Types of Base Baijiu

Simultaneous detection of 3-indoleacetic acid (IAA) and 3-indolepropionic acid (IPA) in strong-aroma types of base Baijiu (base SAB) is crucial for elucidating the metabolic pathway of 3-methylindole during the base SAB brewing. Herein, a novel magnetic poly(allylamine)-modified graphene oxide (GO@PAA@Fe₃O₄) was synthesized as extraction sorbent, followed by high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry HPLC-MS/MS. As a surface modifier of GO, the introduction of PAA and Fe₃O₄ provided more adsorption sites for IAA and IPA, mainly through the generation of H-bonding sites. Moreover, modified by an activation step, the capacity of the activated GO@PAA@Fe₃O₄ for the adsorption of IAA and IPA was 2.1-3.4 times higher than that of unactivated material. The adsorptions of IAA and IPA on GO@PAA@Fe₃O₄ were fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, IAA and IPA were determined in 16-base SAB for the first time, and their concentrations ranged from 0.6 to 11.3 and 0.7 to 18.7 μg/L, respectively.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Organic Compounds Based on Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites

Graphene oxide (GO) is a chemical compound with a form similar to graphene that consists of one-atom-thick two-dimensional layers of sp²-bonded carbon. Graphene oxide exhibits high hydrophilicity and dispersibility. Thus, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solutions. Therefore, functionalization with magnetic nanoparticles is performed in order to prepare a magnetic GO nanocomposite that combines the sufficient adsorption capacity of graphene oxide and the convenience of magnetic separation. Moreover, the magnetic material can be further functionalized with different groups to prevent aggregation and extends its potential application. Until today, a plethora of magnetic GO hybrid materials have been synthesized and successfully employed for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of organic compounds from environmental, agricultural, biological, and food samples. The developed GO nanocomposites exhibit satisfactory stability in aqueous solutions, as well as sufficient surface area. Thus, they are considered as an alternative to conventional sorbents by enriching the analytical toolbox for the analysis of trace organic compounds.

Synthesis of magnetic metal–organic framework composites, Fe3O4-NH2@MOF-235, for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides from honey, fruit juice and tap water samples

Nanotechnology for Plant Disease Management

Each year, 20%–40% of crops are lost due to plant pests and pathogens. Existing plant disease management relies predominantly on toxic pesticides that are potentially harmful to humans and the environment. Nanotechnology can offer advantages to pesticides, like reducing toxicity, improving the shelf-life, and increasing the solubility of poorly water-soluble pesticides, all of which could have positive environmental impacts. This review explores the two directions in which nanoparticles can be utilized for plant disease management: either as nanoparticles alone, acting as protectants; or as nanocarriers for insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and RNA-interference molecules. Despite the several potential advantages associated with the use of nanoparticles, not many nanoparticle-based products have been commercialized for agricultural application. The scarcity of commercial applications could be explained by several factors, such as an insufficient number of field trials and underutilization of pest–crop host systems. In other industries, nanotechnology has progressed rapidly, and the only way to keep up with this advancement for agricultural applications is by understanding the fundamental questions of the research and addressing the scientific gaps to provide a rational and facilitate the development of commercial nanoproducts.

Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Food Sample Preparation

Food samples such as milk, beverages, meat and chicken products, fish, etc. are complex and demanding matrices. Various novel materials such as molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), carbon-based nanomaterials carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently introduced in sample preparation to improve clean up as well as to achieve better recoveries, all complying with green analytical chemistry demands. Metal-organic frameworks are hybrid organic inorganic materials, which have been used for gas storage, separation, catalysis and drug delivery. The last few years MOFs have been used for sample preparation of pharmaceutical, environmental samples and food matrices. Due to their high surface area MOFs can be used as adsorbents for the development of sample preparation techniques of food matrices prior to their analysis with chromatographic and spectrometric techniques with great performance characteristics.

Technology for the Remediation of Water Pollution: A Review on the Fabrication of Metal Organic Frameworks

The ineffective control of the release of pollutants into water has led to serious water pollution. Compared with conditions in the past, the polluting components in aquatic environments have become increasingly complex. Some emerging substances have led to a new threat to the safety of water. Therefore, developing cost-effective technologies for the remediation of water pollution is urgently needed. Adsorption has been considered the most effective operational unit in water treatment processes and thus adsorption materials have gained wide attention. Among them, metal organic frameworks (denoted as MOFs) have been rapidly developed in recent years due to their unique physicochemical performance. They are characterized by larger porosity and larger specific surface area, easier pore structure designing, and comfortable structural modification. In many fields such as adsorption, separation, storage, and transportation, MOFs show a better performance than conventional adsorption materials such as active carbon. Their performance is often dependent on their structural distribution. To optimize the use of MOFs, their fabrication should be given more attention, without being limited to conventional preparation methods. Alternative preparation methods are given in this review, such as diffusion, solvent thermal, microwave, and ion thermal synthesis. Furthermore, developing functionalized MOFs is an available option to improve the removal efficiencies of a specific contaminant through pre-synthetic modification and post-synthesis modification. Post-synthesis modification has become a recent research hotspot. The coupling of MOFs with other techniques would be another option to ameliorate the remediation of water pollution. On one hand, their intrinsic drawbacks may be reduced. On the other hand, their performance may be enhanced due to their interaction behaviors. Overall, such coupling technologies are able to enhance the performance of an individual material. Because the excellent performance of MOF materials has been widely recognized and their developments have received wide attention, especially in environmental fields, in the present work we provide a review of fabrication of MOFs so as to motivate readers to deepen their understanding of the use of MOFs.
