Abstract
Herein, a novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor using gold nanoparticles@3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic (Au@PTCA) Schottky junction as the effective optoelectronic material and lead ion (Pb2+)-G quadruplex structure as the efficient quencher was constructed for the detection of Pb2+ with high sensitivity and excellent selectivity. Au@PTCA Schottky junction, which was proposed by the in situ reduction of Au NPs on the PTCA surface, exhibited a strong unidirectional conductivity, which could generate a significantly enhanced PEC signal compared with the pure PTCA. The Pb2+-G quadruplex structure with a large spatial hindrance effect was formed when the target Pb2+ was present owing to the occurrence of the specific recognition between Pb2+ and its aptamer S1. The formation of a Pb2+-G quadruplex structure effectively quenched the initial signal generated by the Au@PTCA Schottky junction, which was derived from restricted electron transport and light transmission. The obtained prominently decreased PEC signal could achieve the quantitative detection of Pb2+ from 0.5 pM to 500 nM, with a low detection limit of 0.17 pM. The preparation time of this PEC aptasensor was 13 h, and the time for PEC measurement depended on the illumination time, which switched off-on-off for 10 s-20 s-10 s. The study proposed here with high sensitivity and excellent selectivity for Pb2+ analysis offered a novel and reliable tool for environmental monitoring related to heavy metal ions.

Abstract
Low-cost, reliable, and efficient biosensors are crucial in detecting residual heavy metal ions (HMIs) in food products. At present, based on distance-induced localized surface plasmon resonance of noble metal nanoparticles, enzyme-mimetic reaction of nanozymes, and chelation reaction of metal chelators, the constructed optical sensors have attracted wide attention in HMIs detection. Besides, based on the enrichment and signal amplification strategy of nanomaterials on HMIs and the construction of electrochemical aptamer sensing platforms, the developed electrochemical biosensors have overcome the plague of low sensitivity, poor selectivity, and the inability of multiplexed detection in the optical strategy. Moreover, along with an in-depth discussion of these different types of biosensors, a detailed overview of the design and application of innovative devices based on these sensing principles was provided, including microfluidic systems, hydrogel-based platforms, and test strip technologies. Finally, the challenges that hinder commercial application have also been mentioned. Overall, this review aims to establish a theoretical foundation for developing accurate and reliable sensing technologies and devices for HMIs, thereby promoting the widespread application of biosensors in the detection of HMIs in food.

Abstract
This paper presents an application for a molybdenum disulfide nanomaterial with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MoS2@MWCNT/E) in a modified electrode substrate for the detection of uric acid (UA). The modified electrode generates a substantial three-fold increase in the anodic peak current for UA compared to the unmodified MWCNT electrode (MWCNT/E). The MoS2@MWCNT/E surface was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The achieved detection limit stood at 0.04 µmol/L, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.0% (n = 10). The method's accuracy, assessed through relative error and percent recovery, was validated using a urine standard solution spiked with known quantities of UA.

Abstract
In light of potential risks of heavy metal exposure, diverse aptasensors have been developed through the combination of aptamers with nanomaterials for the timely and efficient detection of metals in environmental and biological matrices. Aptamer-based sensors can benefit from multiple merits such as heightened sensitivity, facile production, uncomplicated operation, exceptional specificity, enhanced stability, low immunogenicity, and cost-effectiveness. This review highlights the detection capabilities of nanomaterial-based aptasensors for heavy-metal and metalloid ions based on their performance in terms of the basic quality assurance parameters (e.g., limit of detection, linear dynamic range, and response time). Out of covered studies, dendrimer/CdTe@CdS QDs-based ECL aptasensor was found as the most sensitive option with an LOD of 2.0 aM (atto-molar: 10-18 M) detection for Hg2+. The existing challenges in the nanomaterial-based aptasensors and their scientific solutions are also discussed.

Abstract
In this study, a label-free aptasensor utilizing colorimetric properties was developed to detect Pb2+ with high sensitivity. The approach involved applying modified aptamer which enhanced the oxidase-mimicking activity of MnO2 nanoflowers. This innovative method provides an efficient means for monitoring Pb2+ ions without requiring any labeling techniques. The fundamental principle of this aptasensor is based on the adsorption of a modified aptamer onto MnO2 nanoflowers' surface, which in turn increases their affinity for chromogenic substrates and enhances their catalytic activity. The proposed aptasensor exploits the high sensitivity due to the extension of the aptamer sequence length by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). Under optimum experimental conditions, the developed colorimetric aptasensor indicated a linear detection range from 4 to 80 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.4 nM. Moreover, the aptasensor successfully monitored Pb2+ in the drinking water, milk and human serum samples. Henceforth, the colorimetric aptasensor exhibited in this study possesses several benefits such as uncomplicated operation, cost-effectiveness, label-free detection and remarkable sensitivity. Thus rendering it a suitable option for analyzing intricate samples.

Abstract
In this work, a self-supplied electron photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for sensitive determination of Pb2+ was established by utilizing donor-acceptor (D-A)-type PTB7-Th (poly{4,8-bis[5-(2-ethylhexyl) thiophen-2-yl]benzo[1,2-b,4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl] thieno[3,4-b]-thiophene-4,6-diyl}) as a photoelectric material coupled with biotin as an efficient signal quencher. Impressively, compared with the traditional PEC signal quenchers, biotin was first applied as a PEC signal quencher in this work and it effectively avoided a cumbersome preparation process, complex DNA sequence design, and extra reagent assistance and greatly simplified experimental steps, which could achieve an efficient PEC signal quenching toward PTB7-Th. In addition, the execution of a DNAzyme-assisted Pb2+ recycling amplification reaction could release the quencher biotin, leading to the recovery of the PEC signal, thereby realizing the quantitative detection of Pb2+. Resultantly, the submitted self-supplied electron PEC biosensor presented an extensive coverage of assay Pb2+ (50 fM to 500 nM) along with a low determination limit (16.7 fM), which exhibited the advantages of high selectivity and excellent stability. Importantly, this work provided a powerful alternative to traditional heavy metal-ion assessment methods and possessed the potential for application in environment, biomedicine, and food-safety fields.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death globally, especially in underdeveloped nations. The main impediment to TB eradication is a lack of efficient diagnostic tools for disease diagnosis. In this work, label free and ultrasensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been developed based on the electrodeposition of gold nanoparticles on the surface of carbon screen-printed carbon electrode (Zensors) for signal amplification. Particularly, screen-printed electrodes were modified by electrochemical deposition of Au to enhance the conductivity and facilitate the immobilization of ssDNA probes via Au-S bonds. The electrochemically modified SPEs were characterized using Scanning electron microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM/EDX) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques were used to investigate the DNA hybridization between single-stranded (ssDNA) probe and target DNA (tDNA). Under the ideal conditions, DPV exhibited a correlation coefficient R2 = 0.97, when analyzed with different tDNA concentrations. The proposed DNA biosensor exhibits a good detection range from 2 to 10 nm with a low detection limit of 1.91 nm, as well as high selectivity that, under ideal conditions, distinguishes non-complementary DNA from perfectly matched tDNA. By eliminating the need for DNA purification, this work paves the path for creating disposable biosensors capable of detecting DNA from raw sputum samples.

Abstract
Lead ions in water are harmful to human health and ecosystems because of their high toxicity and nondegradability. It is important to explore effective fluorescence probes for Pb2+ detection. In this work, surface-functionalized molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) were prepared using a hydrothermal method, and ammonium tetrathiomolybdate and glutathione were used as precursors. The photoluminescence quantum yield of MoS2 QDs can be improved to 20.4%, which is higher than that for MoS2 QDs reported in current research. The as-prepared MoS2 QDs demonstrate high selectivity and sensitivity for Pb2+ ions, and the limit of detection is 0.056 μM. The photoluminescence decay dynamics for MoS2 QDs in the presence of Pb2+ ions in different concentrations indicate that the fluorescence quenching originated from nonradiative electron transfer from excited MoS2 QDs to the Pb2+ ion. The prepared MoS2 QDs have great prospect and are expected to become a good method for lead ion detection.

Abstract
A new electrochemical DNA biosensor based on mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-capped ZnS quantum dots (MPA-ZnS QDs) immobilization matrix for covalent binding with 20-base aminated oligonucleotide has been successfully developed. Prior to the modification, screen-printed carbon paste electrode (SPE) was self-assembled with multilayer gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and cysteamine (Cys). The inclusion of MPA-ZnS QDs semiconducting material in modified electrodes has enhanced the electron transfer between the SPE transducer and DNA leading to improved bioanalytical assay of target biomolecules. Electrochemical studies performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulsed voltammetry (DPV) demonstrated that the MPA-ZnS QDs modified AuNPs electrode was able to produce a lower charge transfer resistance response and hence higher electrical current response. Under optimal conditions, the immobilized synthetic DNA probe exhibited high selectivity towards synthetic target DNA. Based on the DPV response of the reduction of anthraquinone monosulphonic acid (AQMS) redox probe, the MPA-ZnS QDs-based electrochemical DNA biosensor responded to target DNA concentration from 1 × 10−9 μM to 1 × 10−3 μM with a sensitivity 1.2884 ± 0.12 µA, linear correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9848 and limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10−11 μM target DNA. The DNA biosensor exhibited satisfactory reproducibility with an average relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.4%. The proposed electrochemical transducer substrate has been employed to immobilize the aminated Arowana fish (Scleropages formosus) DNA probe. The DNA biosensor showed linearity to target DNA from 1 × 10−11 to 1 × 10−6 µM (R2 = 0.9785) with sensitivity 1.1251 ± 0.243 µA and LOD of 1 × 10−11 µM. The biosensor has been successfully used to determine the gender of Arowana fish without incorporating toxic raw materials previously employed in the hazardous processing conditions of polypyrrole chemical conducting polymer, whereby the cleaning step becomes difficult with thicker films due to high levels of toxic residues from the decrease in polymerization efficacy as films grew.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution resulting from significant heavy metal waste discharge is increasingly serious. Traditional methods for the detection of heavy metal ions have high requirements on external conditions, so developing a sensitive, simple, and reproducible detection method is becoming an urgent need. The aptamer, as a new kind of artificial probe, has received more attention in recent years for its high sensitivity, easy acquisition, wide target range, and wide use in the detection of various harmful substances. The detection platform that an aptamer-based electrochemical biosensor (E-apt sensor) provides is a new approach for the detection of heavy metal ions. Nanomaterials are particularly important in the construction of E-apt sensors, as they can be used as aptamer carriers or sensitizers to stimulate or inhibit electrochemical signals, thus significantly improving the detection sensitivity. This review summarizes the application of different types of nanomaterials in E-apt sensors. The construction methods and research progress of the E-apt sensor based on different working principles are systematically introduced. Moreover, the advantages and challenges of the E-apt sensor in heavy metal ion detection are summarized.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution has severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Thus, it is urgent to achieve the rapid, selective, sensitive and portable detection of heavy metal ions. To overcome the defects of traditional methods such as time-consuming, low sensitivity, high cost and complicated operation, QDs (Quantum dots)-based nanomaterials have been used in sensors to significantly improve the sensing performance. Due to their excellent physicochemical properties, high specific surface area, high adsorption and reactive capacity, nanomaterials could act as potential probes or offer enhanced sensitivity and create a promising nanosensors platform. In this review, the rapidly advancing types of QDs for heavy metal ions detection are first summarized. Modified with ligands, nanomaterials, or biomaterials, QDs are assembled on sensors by the interaction of electrostatic adsorption, chemical bonding, steric hindrance, and base-pairing. The stability of QDs-based nanosensors is improved by doping the elements to QDs, providing the reference substance, optimizing the assemble strategies and so on. Then, according to transducer principles, the two most typical sensor categories based on QDs: optical and electrochemical sensors are highlighted to be discussed. In the meanwhile, portable devices combining with QDs to adapt the practical detection in complex situations are summarized. The deficiencies and future challenges of QDs in toxicity, specificity, portability, multi-metal co-detection and degradation during the detection are also pointed out. In the end, the development trends of QDs-based nanosensors for heavy metal ions detection are discussed. This review presents an overall understanding, recent advances, current challenges and future outlook of QDs-based nanosensors for heavy metal detection.

Abstract
The detection of S2- is of great significance because excess S2- can lead to a variety of serious physiological diseases. Here, two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), ZnMOF-74 and CuMOF-74, were synthesized by using 2,5-dihydroxy terephthalic acid with strong fluorescence as organic ligand and Zn2+ or Cu2+ as central coordination ions for S2- detection. Both as-prepared ZnMOF-74 and CuMOF-74 displayed nanospheres with a diameter of about 100 nm. Under the excitation of 353 nm, the ZnMOF-74 had a characteristic emission peak at 537 nm and the CuMOF-74 had a characteristic emission peak at 528 nm under excitation of 356 nm. The interaction of S2- and Zn2+ weakened the fluorescence of ZnMOF-74 but the interaction of S2- with Cu2+ to form CuS restored the fluorescence of CuMOF-74, so the ZnMOF-74 and CuMOF-74 were exploited as a fluorescent nanosensor for sensing S2-. The ZnMOF-74 sensor has a good linear range of 19.6 nmol L-1-90.0 μmol L-1, and the limit of detection was as low as 6.53 nmol L-1. The CuMOF-74 sensor has a good linear relationship with II0 in the S2- concentration range of 1.50 nmol L-1-125 μmol L-1, and the limit of detection was 1.50 nmol L-1. The proposed ZnMOF-74 and CuMOF-74 sensor could also detect S2- in actual samples.

Abstract
In this paper a photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on specific recognition with conformational changed after the target Cd(II) identification was fabricated. A ZnO and reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) nanocomposite with enhanced PEC activity was designed as photoactive material. After the further incorporation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with ZnO-rGO nanocomposite, the enhanced photocurrent signal could be detected owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance and good conductivity of AuNPs. In addition, AuNPs were used as anchors for immobilization of -SH modified aptamer S1. After that aptamer S2 was paired with S1 sequence to form complementary double stranded DNA (dsDNA) on the electrode surface. Methylene blue (MB) was acted as sensitizer and assembled in dsDNA structure to amplify photocurrent response. When Cd(II) was bound to the aptamer presented on the sensing interface, S2 specifically recognized and captured Cd(II), which resulted in the unwinding of dsDNA structure and the separation of MB molecules from the electrode surface with photocurrent response decreased. The photocurrent was detected by a double-working-electrode system, which used the modified electrode as the first working electrode and glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as the second working electrode. Dopamine (DA) was added to the electrolyte and acted as the electron donor, which could be oxidized on the modified electrode and reduced on the GCE to form a cyclic reaction, leading to the enhanced photocurrent response with improved photocurrent stability. This MB sensitized PEC aptasensor exhibited a high sensitivity with a detection limit of 1.8 × 10-12 mol/L (3σ). Thus, a highly sensitive aptasensor with double-working-electrode detection method for Cd(II) determination were established and further applied to the water samples analysis.

Abstract
A composite of CdS nanoparticles and a europium metal organic framework (Eu-MOF) (CdS/Eu-MOF) was synthesized. The unique properties of MOFs help to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of CdS by reducing charge carrier recombination and utilizing a broader spectrum for light harvesting. Under visible light illumination, the photocurrent of the CdS/Eu-MOF composite modified electrode was about 2.5-fold higher than that of the CdS modified electrode. When an ampicillin (AMP)-binding aptamer was immobilized on the CdS/Eu-MOF modified electrode as a recognition element, a self-powered PEC aptasensor exhibiting a specific photocurrent response to AMP was constructed. Several experimental conditions such as the ratio of CdS to MOF, the coating amount of the CdS/Eu-MOF suspension and the concentration of the aptamer were studied. Under optimum conditions, the photocurrent of the developed sensor was linearly related to the logarithm AMP concentration in the range of 1 × 10-10 to 2 × 10-7 M, with a detection limit (3S/N) of 9.3 × 10-11 M. Moreover, this sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, good repeatability and desirable stability. It was successfully applied to the detection of AMP in lake water and milk samples.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive direct detection of potassium (K+) and lead (Pb2+) ions was developed by using the assembly and disassembly of a chiral cyanine dye/TBA complex. The dye DMSB (3-ethyl-2-[3-(3-ethyl-3H-benzoselenazol-2-ylidene)-2-methylprop-1-enyl] benzoselenazolium bromide) loses the ability of self-assembly, but it can be activated by thrombin-binding aptamer (TBA) G-quadruplex structure. And only the TBA G-quadruplex formed in the presence of K+, can strongly induce J-aggregate signals of DMSB. Because the Pb2+ ions can bind and stabilize the TBA G-quadruplex with much higher efficiency than K+, the J-aggregate signals of DMSB falls sharply when the Pb2+ is present. As a result, the assembly and disassembly of DMSB allows the selective detection of 10 μM K+ and 20 nM Pb2+ respectively, even the competitive sodium ion (Na+) was as high as 145 mM. The linear correlation existed between the J-aggregate intensity and the concentration of K+ and Pb2+ over the range of 0.5-5.0 mM and 200-2000 nM, respectively. Moreover, the concentration of K+ (∼3 mM) and Pb2+ (below 20 nM) in human blood serum samples were determined by the present method, which agreed well with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This work not only opens a door for the further development of G-quadruplex-based aptasensor in complex real system, but also provides a simple and versatile sensing platform for ion detection in clinic.

High-field modulated ion-selective field-effect-transistor (FET) sensors with sensitivity higher than the ideal Nernst sensitivity. Sci Rep 2018; 8:8300. Abstract
Lead ion selective membrane (Pb-ISM) coated AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) was used to demonstrate a whole new methodology for ion-selective FET sensors, which can create ultra-high sensitivity (−36 mV/log [Pb2+]) surpassing the limit of ideal sensitivity (−29.58 mV/log [Pb2+]) in a typical Nernst equation for lead ion. The largely improved sensitivity has tremendously reduced the detection limit (10−10 M) for several orders of magnitude of lead ion concentration compared to typical ion-selective electrode (ISE) (10−7 M). The high sensitivity was obtained by creating a strong filed between the gate electrode and the HEMT channel. Systematical investigation was done by measuring different design of the sensor and gate bias, indicating ultra-high sensitivity and ultra-low detection limit obtained only in sufficiently strong field. Theoretical study in the sensitivity consistently agrees with the experimental finding and predicts the maximum and minimum sensitivity. The detection limit of our sensor is comparable to that of Inductively-Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrum (ICP-MS), which also has detection limit near 10−10 M.
