Advances and Applications of Hybrid Graphene-Based Materials as Sorbents for Solid Phase Microextraction Techniques

The advancement of traditional sample preparation techniques has brought about miniaturization systems designed to scale down conventional methods and advocate for environmentally friendly analytical approaches. Although often referred to as green analytical strategies, the effectiveness of these methods is intricately linked to the properties of the sorbent utilized. Moreover, to fully embrace implementing these methods, it is crucial to innovate and develop new sorbent or solid phases that enhance the adaptability of miniaturized techniques across various matrices and analytes. Graphene-based materials exhibit remarkable versatility and modification potential, making them ideal sorbents for miniaturized strategies due to their high surface area and functional groups. Their notable adsorption capability and alignment with green synthesis approaches, such as bio-based graphene materials, enable the use of less sorbent and the creation of biodegradable materials, enhancing their eco-friendly aspects towards green analytical practices. Therefore, this study provides an overview of different types of hybrid graphene-based materials as well as their applications in crucial miniaturized techniques, focusing on offline methodologies such as stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS), pipette-tip solid-phase extraction (PT-SPE), disposable pipette extraction (DPX), dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (d-µ-SPE), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE).

Preparation and application of an imidazolium-based poly (ionic liquid) functionalized silica sorbent for solid-phase extraction of parabens from food samples

In this work, an imidazolium-based poly (ionic liquid) (poly(1-octyl-3-vinyl- imidazolium naphthalene sulfonate)) functionalized silica (poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-) @SiO2) was successfully prepared for the determination of parabens in food samples. The prepared poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-)@SiO2 was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The simulation calculation results indicated that the suitable binding energies were between the polymeric ionic liquids and parabens, and the main interactions for extraction were hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π stacking interactions. In addition, compared with commercial extraction materials, the prepared poly(C8VIm+NapSO3-)@SiO2 sorbent showed comparable or even better extraction performance towards parabens. The effective parameters were optimized by a combination of the univariate method and Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under the optimum conditions, coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), wide linear ranges (1.0-800 μg L-1), good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9997) and low limits of detection (0.1 μg L-1) were obtained. In addition, the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) were all lower than 6.3%. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully used for the determination of parabens in food samples and satisfactory recoveries in the range of 76.9-97.4% were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed method had good sensitivity, accuracy and precision for the detection of parabens in food samples.

Recent advances in emerging application of functional materials in sample pretreatment methods for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of plant growth regulators: A mini-review

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are a class of small molecular compounds, which can remarkably affect the physiological process of plants. The complex plant matrix along with a wide polarity range and unstable chemical properties of PGRs hinder their trace analysis. In order to obtain a reliable and accurate result, a sample pretreatment process must be carried out, including eliminating the interference of the matrix effect and pre-concentrating the analytes. In recent years, the research of functional materials in sample pretreatment has experienced rapid growth. This review comprehensively overviews recent development in functional materials covering one-dimensional materials, two-dimensional materials, and three-dimensional materials applied in the pretreatment of PGRs before liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Besides, the advantages and limitations of the above functionalized enrichment materials are discussed, and their future trends have been prospected. The work could be helpful to bring new insights for researchers engaged in functional materials in sample pretreatment of PGRs based on LC-MS.

Simultaneous determination of Co and Pb in P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis by ICP-OES after GO-TiO2-DES-based dispersive micro solid phase extraction

In this work, deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used to modify GO-TiO₂ to synthesize new adsorption material GO-TiO₂-DES nanocomposites. It was first used for dispersive micro solid phase extraction (DMSPE) and combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for simultaneous determination of trace cobalt (Co) and lead (Pb) in natural medicine P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area were used to characterize. The results showed that GO-TiO₂-DES nanocomposites were successfully prepared and had better adsorption effect on metal ions. The factors affecting the extraction and elution of Co and Pb were optimized, including the type of DES, pH, adsorption time, amount of adsorbent, adsorption temperature, and elution time. Under the optimum conditions, the enhancement factors (EFs) of Co and Pb were 31 and 28, the limits of detection (LODs) were 0.11 and 0.24 μg L^-1, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.36 and 0.82 μg L^-1, respectively. The results of Co and Pb determined by the established method were in good agreement with those of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), which verified the accuracy and reliability of the method.

Novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite derived from tea for multiple SAs and QNs antibiotics removal in water

Antibiotics pollution is an urgent public health issue. Biochar is a kind of promising composite for removal antibiotic in aqueous environment. In this study, a novel magnetic graphoxide/biochar composite (mGO/TBC) was synthesized by simple impregnation method and used as an efficient and recyclable persulfate (PS) activator for degradation and removal of sulfonamides (SAs) and quinolones (QNs) antibiotics. Based on the synergism pre-adsorption and degradation between graphoxide and biochar, the removal rates of mGO/TBC on sarafloxacin hydrochloride, sulfadimethoxine, sulfapyridine, sulfadoxine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfachloropyridazine, enrofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin were increased above 95%. Moreover, the mGO/TBC could be reused at least seven times after degradation-recovery cycles. Quenching experiment and ESR analysis proved that ¹O₂, ^•OH, and SO₄^•- from mGO/TBC/PS system were the primary oxidation active species to degrade SAs and QNs. It is a promising substrate for antibiotic bioremediation with good application prospects.

Ionic liquid-based magnetic nanoparticles for magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction: A review

Due to their highly tunable nature and outstanding physicochemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely reported for use in the synthesis of multitudinous magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). IL-based magnetic nanoparticles (IL-MNPs) have great potential in magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE). At present, IL-MNPs have been successfully applied in the pretreatment of MDSPE samples from medicines, pesticides, veterinary drugs, heavy metals, dyes, additives, and proteins in agricultural products, foods and beverages, environmental water, and biological samples. In this review, the preparation of IL-MNPs and their application in MDSPE are comprehensively summarized. The structural characteristics of the introduced ILs used to prepare the IL-MNPs and the synthetic routes employed to obtain the IL-MNPs are described, including physical coating and chemical bonding methods. The IL-MNPs are then classified and described according to different modified materials, including silica-based materials, carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers and other interesting large/small molecules. Finally, the research prospects and development directions of IL-MNPs in the context of MDSPE are further identified.

[Novel adsorption material for solid phase extraction in sample pretreatment of plant hormones]

植物激素在植物生长过程中具有重要作用,调节植物生长、发育及抗逆的各个过程。植物激素超微精准定量分析一直是植物生理学研究的瓶颈问题。植物激素的准确、高效检测目前大多是基于液相色谱-串联质谱联用技术。样品前处理是植物激素色谱-质谱分析中必不可少的一个步骤,直接影响后续检测方法的灵敏度和准确性。在植物激素各种前处理方法中,固相萃取(SPE)技术应用非常广泛。在萃取小柱基础上发展了多种新形式(分散固相萃取、磁性固相萃取、固相微萃取等,称之为SPE相关方法)。在上述SPE相关方法中,吸附材料的选择均是关键因素,决定了样品前处理过程的目标物提取、净化和富集效果。碳基材料(包括碳纳米管、石墨烯、碳氮化合物等)和有机骨架材料(包括金属有机骨架、共价有机材料)拥有结构可设计、比表面积大、稳定性良好等特性,非常适合作为吸附材料。分子印迹聚合物和超分子化合物依靠主-客体特异性分子识别作用,能显著提高样品前处理方法的选择性。本文重点针对植物激素样品前处理中的SPE技术,综述了近5年来上述几类功能化吸附材料的最新应用进展,并对其发展趋势进行展望。

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of high molecular weight peptides using stearic acid-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposite: determination of some hypothalamic agents in biological samples

Therapeutic peptides have an important effect on physiological function and human health, so it is momentous to quantify and detect low levels of these biomolecules in biological samples for treatment and diagnostic purposes. In the present study, an efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method was developed based on stearic acid-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposite (MHAP/SA) as a novel and cost-effective adsorbent for extraction of five hypothalamic-related peptides (goserelin, octreotide, triptorelin, somatostatin, and cetrorelix) from biological samples. To characterize the morphology and physicochemical properties of MHAP/SA, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM), CHNS elemental analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were applied. Under optimum conditions, the proposed method (MSPE-HPLC-UV) represented favorable linearity with R² ≥ 0.9987, suitable intra- and inter-day precisions (RSD ≤ 6.9% and RSD ≤ 8.1%, respectively, n = 3), and limits of detection and quantification in the range of 0.75-1.12 ng mL^-1 and 2.50-3.75 ng mL^-1, respectively. Eventually, the proposed method was used for the extraction and quantification of target therapeutic peptides in plasma and urine samples, and satisfactory relative recoveries were achieved in the range of 90.6-110.3%.

Magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction of triazole and triazine pesticides from vegetable samples using a hydrophilic-lipophilic sorbent based on maltodextrin- and β-cyclodextrin-functionalized graphene oxide

Maltodextrin- and β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide (mGO/β-CD/MD), a novel hydrophilic-lipophilic composite, was successfully fabricated and used for the co-extraction of triazines and triazoles from vegetable samples before HPLC-UV analysis. mGO/β-CD/MD was synthesized by chemical bonding of β-CD and MD to the surface of mGO, using epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a linker. The successful synthesis of mGO/β-CD/MD was confirmed by characterization tests, including attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analyses. The hydrophobic cavity of β-CD and a large number of hydroxyl groups on the MD structure contributed to the co-extraction of mentioned pesticides with a wide range of polarity. Under the optimized condition (sorbent amount, 30 mg; desorption time, 10 min; desorption solvent volume, 300 μL; desorption solvent, methanol/acetonitrile (1:1) containing 5% (v/v) acetic acid; extraction time, 20 min; and pH of sample solution, 7.0), good linearity within the range 1.0-1000 μg L^-1 (r² ≥ 0.992) was achieved. Extraction efficiencies were in the range 66.4-95.3%, and the limits of detection were 0.01-0.08 μg L^-1. Relative recoveries for spiked samples were obtained in the range 88.4-112.0%, indicating that the matrix effect was insignificant, and good precisions (intra- and inter-day) were also achieved (RSDs < 9.0%, n = 3). The results confirmed that the developed method was efficient for the determination  of trace amounts of pesticides in potato, tomato, and corn samples.

Enhanced adsorption of malathion and phoxim by a three-dimensional magnetic graphene oxide-functionalized citrus peel-derived bio-composite

By integrating the steps of direct magnetization and one-pot pyrolysis, a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic graphene oxide-functionalized citrus peel-derived bio-composite (mGOBC) was synthesized and characterized successfully, and it was proved to possess a three-dimensional (3D) porous architecture and graphitic structure. Its potential as an enrichment adsorbent was investigated using adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm models to establish an effective analytical method for the determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in vegetables. The experimental results indicated that the adsorption was better fitted with the pseudo second order model and Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities for malathion and phoxim were 25.26 mg g-1 and 42.31 mg g-1, respectively. It was found that the graphitic structure of mGOBC resulted in π-π EDA (electron donor-acceptor) interaction with the benzene rings, electron-donating N, P, and S atoms in the analytes, which assisted adsorption. Subsequently, Plackett-Burman (P-B) experimental design, central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to develop an analytical method based on the mGOBC adsorbent. Under optimal conditions, the developed method is accurate and precise. The novel synthesized mGOBC can efficiently achieve removal and trace determination of harmful OPPs.

[Recent developments of pesticide adsorbents based on cyclodextrins]

The invention and application of pesticides have greatly increased the yield of crops, greatly contributing to ensuring people's basic livelihoods and gradually improving their livelihoods to a well-off level. However, foods, water sources, and soil, containing high levels of pesticide residues, result in increasingly serious pollution. Pesticide residues usually have the characteristics of micro toxicity, difficult biodegradation, and bioaccumulation, and thus pose serious threat to living organisms and ecosystems. In recent years, pesticide pollution has earned worldwide focus. Thus, methods for the efficient detection of trace pesticides and reduction of the harm caused by pesticide pollution are urgently required. Researchers have used catalysis, electrochemistry, membrane separation, adsorption, and other methods to enrich pesticides from complex matrices. Among these, adsorbents have attracted much attention owing to their advantages of simple operation steps, rapid treatment process, and low amounts of organic solvents required. Research on adsorption materials has always been a very active field, and is also the key to the success of separation and enrichment of pesticides from complex matrices. Development of adsorbents with the advantages of simple synthesis, environment-friendliness, high stability, and strong reusability is of great significance. There has been some progress in the field of pesticide adsorption using supramolecular compounds. Cyclodextrin is a macrocyclic compound with a cavity after crown ether, which can form inclusion complexes via host guest interactions as the main body. Cyclodextrin can also be modified by etherification, esterification, oxidation, and other chemical reactions to improve its adsorption performance. Pesticides can be classified into organic and inorganic substances. One of the most widely used inorganic fungicides is the Bordeaux solution, whose main component is Cu²⁺. Organic fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, and plant growth regulators are basically organic molecules, whose hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can form complexes with Cu²⁺. As a matrix, cyclodextrin not only increases the surface area of the materials, but also provides the binding sites of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, which guarantees efficient enrichment of Cu²⁺. Organic pesticides with high polarity, high electron density, and strong hydrophobicity could be better adsorbed. In this paper, the application of cyclodextrin-based adsorbents in pesticide adsorption was reviewed, and on this basis, reference to future development directions and application prospects were provided. The adsorption capacity of individual pesticide adsorbents based on cyclodextrin, as reviewed in this paper, is not high enough. Therefore, improving the adsorption capacity is currently a major research target. Some of the above-mentioned adsorbents have unclear degradation mechanisms and can easily cause secondary pollution. Therefore, the development of environment-friendly pesticide adsorbents that are easy to regenerate is a promising research direction for the future. After adsorption, some detection methods are used to determine whether the pesticide residues are up to the standard; however, the detection instruments are expensive. Therefore, the development of a combined detection mechanism that can reduce workload and cost is a promising research direction. Finally, the development of smart cyclodextrin-based adsorbents is also an efficient and rapid method to reduce the cost of detecting residual pesticide concentrations and the risk of pesticide pollution. For example, intelligent materials, whose color changes can be observed by the naked eye, not only adsorb pesticides, but also respond according to the concentration of residual pesticides.

Recent advances and applications of cyclodextrins in magnetic solid phase extraction

Cyclodextrins (CDs) as a family of cyclic oligosaccharides are toroidal with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. They are well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with different compounds. They are used as chiral stationary phases in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) or as chiral reagents in the background electrolyte of capillary electrophoresis (CE). In recent years, they have been used for modification of sorbents or as sorbents in solid phase extraction (SPE) procedures. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as a new type of SPE procedure, has received considerable attention due to its rapid phase separation process as compared to traditional extraction mode. This review covers the synthesis of CD-based magnetic sorbents (such as immobilization of CDs onto the different supports, production of nanosponges, and making hybrid substances with nanomaterials) and the use of these compounds in MSPE of different analytes from biological, environmental, and food samples. Also, prospects of CD-based sorbents for sample pre-treatment are also proposed.

Selective, sensitive, and miniaturized analytical method based on molecularly imprinted graphene oxide composites for the determination of naphthalene-derived plant growth regulators in apples

This paper reports a selective, sensitive, and miniaturized analytical method based on a molecularly imprinted graphene oxide (MIP-GO) composite as adsorbent for miniaturized tip solid-phase extraction (MTSPE) to determine naphthalene-derived plant growth regulators (PGRs) in apples. The proposed method combines the advantages of MIP-GOs (high selectivity), MTSPE (low consumption), and high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (high sensitivity). Under optimized conditions, the method exhibited appreciable linearity (2.00-200 ng/g), low detection limits (0.21-0.53 ng/g), high accuracy (absolute recoveries: 87.6-99.5%), and high precision (relative standard deviations ≤ 3.0%), along with low consumption (0.5 mL sample solution and 2.0 mg adsorbent). In addition, the adsorption performance of the MIP-GO adsorbent did not decrease over ten months, highlighting the long storage and operational lifetime of the adsorbent. The proposed method was employed for the analysis of naphthalene-derived PGR residues in apples and exhibited promising potential for application in food safety analysis.

Cyclodextrins as a Key Piece in Nanostructured Materials: Quantitation and Remediation of Pollutants

Separation and pre-concentration of trace pollutants from their matrix by reversible formation of inclusion complexes has turned into a widely studied field, especially for the benefits provided to different areas. Cyclodextrins are non-toxic oligosaccharides that are well known for their host–guest chemistry, low prices, and negligible environmental impact. Therefore, they have been widely used as chiral selectors and delivery systems in the pharmaceutical and food industry over time. However, their use for extraction purposes is hampered by their high solubility in water. This difficulty is being overcome with a variety of investigations in materials science. The setting-up of novel solid sorbents with improved properties thanks to the presence of cyclodextrins at their structure is still an open research area. Some properties they can offer, such as an increased selectivity or a good distribution along the surface of a solid support, which provides better accessibility for guest molecules, are characteristics of great interest. This systematic review reports the most significant uses of cyclodextrins for the adsorption of pollutants in different-origin samples based on the works reported in the literature in the last years. The study has been carried out indistinctly for quantitation and remediation purposes.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Adsorption of dichromate ions from aqueous solution onto magnetic graphene oxide modified by β-cyclodextrin

In this work, the β-cyclodextrin modified magnetic graphene oxide (β-CD/MGO) composite was fabricated by the in situ co-precipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and particle size analysis. The adsorption behavior of dichromate ions on the β-CD/MGO was investigated, and the mechanism of adsorption was also studied using FT-IR and XPS. The results from SEM and TEM showed that the graphene oxide (GO) layer became rough, and many fine particles were attached after compounding with ferroferric oxide and β-cyclodextrin. The characterization results of FT-IR and XPS show that that β-cyclodextrin and ferroferric oxide have been perfectly compounded to the graphene oxide layer and β-CD/MGO has a particle size of about 460 nm, a specific surface area of 252.3 m²g^-1, and a saturation magnetization of 73.5 emu g^-1. The adsorption amount of dichromate ions on the β-CD/MGO is affected by pH, adsorbent dosage, and adsorption time. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data agreed very well with the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption amount of dichromate ions on the β-CD/MGO was 49.95 mg g^-1. After five successive adsorbent reuses, the reuse rate is still 73%, indicating the excellent potential reusability of β-CD/MGO adsorbent. β-CD/MGO exhibits excellent adsorption performance for dichromate ions. As an environmentally friendly magnetic adsorbent, β-CD/MGO is suitable for the treatment of dichromate-containing wastewater.

Role of Ionic Liquids in Composites in Analytical Sample Preparation

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a group of non-conventional salts with melting points below 100 °C. Apart from their negligible vapor pressure at room temperature, high thermal stability, and impressive solvation properties, ILs are characterized by their tunability. Given such nearly infinite combinations of cations and anions, and the easy modification of their structures, ILs with specific properties can be synthesized. These characteristics have attracted attention regarding their use as extraction phases in analytical sample preparation methods, particularly in liquid-phase extraction methods. Given the liquid nature of most common ILs, their incorporation in analytical sample preparation methods using solid sorbents requires the preparation of solid derivatives, such as polymeric ILs, or the combination of ILs with other materials to prepare solid IL-based composites. In this sense, many solid composites based on ILs have been prepared with improved features, including magnetic particles, carbonaceous materials, polymers, silica materials, and metal-organic frameworks, as additional materials forming the composites. This review aims to give an overview on the preparation and applications of IL-based composites in analytical sample preparation in the period 2017–2020, paying attention to the role of the IL material in those composites to understand the effect of the individual components in the sorbent.

A novel Fe3O4/graphene oxide/citrus peel-derived bio-char based nanocomposite with enhanced adsorption affinity and sensitivity of ciprofloxacin and sparfloxacin

To create more active adsorption sites on biochar, the Fe₃O₄/GO/citrus peel-derived magnetic bio-nanocomposite (mGOCP) with hierarchically porous architectures was synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach for efficient removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and sparfloxacin (SPA). The characterization analysis of bio-nanocomposites showed that the incorporation of GO could ensure relatively higher surface area (1556 cm² g^-1), more abundant pore structure, and higher thermal stability within mGOCP bio-nanocomposites than Fe₃O₄/citrus peel-derived magnetic bio-nanocomposites (mCP). And the mGOCP-1% attained outstanding adsorption capacity for CIP (283.44 mg g^-1) and SPA (502.37 mg g^-1), respectively. The primary adsorption mechanisms for CIP and SPA included π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction, H-bonding, hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic interaction. Overall, the surface morphology and structural composition of biochars could be regulated with GO to facilitate the adsorption capacity. Moreover, the developed mGOCP could be extended as a potential adsorbent for removal of other emerging organic pollutants in water.

Cyclodextrin-based sorbents for solid phase extraction

Cyclodestrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides well-known for their ability to form host-guest inclusion complexes with properly sized compounds. They have been used for decades as chiral selectors as well as drug delivery systems within the frameworks of separation science and pharmaceutical science. More recently, their use has been extended to the field of extractive science under the stimulus of additional advantageous characteristics, such as low-price, negligible environmental impact, non-toxicity, as arising from the fact that natural CDs are starch degradation products. To abate their solubility in water and generate novel sorbents for solid phase extraction, the following approaches have been employed: (i) immobilization onto inert materials (silica, attapulgite, etc.); (ii) immobilization onto nanomaterials (magnetic nanoparticles, titanium oxide, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, etc.); (iii) polymerisation with specific cross-linkers to form the so-called CD-based nanosponges. Particularly promising are these last ones for their selectivity, mesoporous structure, insolubility in aqueous media and good dispersibility. This review offers a concise overview on the state of art and future prospects of CDs in this important sector of the analytical chemistry, offering a critical perspective of the most significant applications.
