Application of surface molecular imprinted magnetic graphene oxide and high performance mimetic behavior of bi-metal ZnCo MOF for determination of atropine in human serum

Ultrasensitive detection of chlortetracycline in animal-origin food using molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on SnS2/ZnCo-MOF and AuNPs

The chlortetracycline (CTC) residue in food poses a threat to human health. Therefore, developing sensitive, convenient and selective analytical methods for CTC detection is crucial. This study innovatively uses tin disulfide/bimetallic organic framework (SnS2/ZnCo-MOF) nanocomposites in conjunction with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to co-modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Further, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensing platform Au-MIP/SnS2/ZnCo-MOF/Au/GCE (AZG) was fabricated for selective CTC detection. SnS2/ZnCo-MOF enhanced the stability and surface area of the AZG sensor. The presence of AuNPs facilitated electron transport between the probe and the electrode across the insulating MIP layer. The fixation of AuNPs and MIP via electropolymerization enhanced the selective recognition of this sensor and amplified its output signal. The AZG sensor demonstrated a wide linear detection range (0.1-100 μM), low detection limit (0.072 nM), and high sensitivity (0.830 μA μM-1). It has been used for detecting CTC in animal-origin food with good recovery (96.08%-104.60%).

Recent progress of the research of metal-organic frameworks-molecularly imprinted polymers (MOFs-MIPs) in food safety detection field

Food safety is an important cornerstone of protecting human health and life. Therefore, it is of great significance to detect possible pollutants in food sensitively and efficiently. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used in the adsorption and detection of food pollutants. However, traditional MIPs have problems such as uneven loading of the imprinted cavity and slow mass transfer efficiency. While the adsorption of MOFs has low specificity and cannot accurately identify target molecules. Therefore, some researchers have taken advantage of the high specific recognition abilities of MIPs and the large specific surface areas, high porosity and easy functionalization of MOFs to combine MOFs with MIPs, and have achieved a series of important results in the field of food safety detection. This paper reviews the research progress of the application of MOFs-MIPs in the field of food safety detection from 2019 to 2024. It furnishes researchers interested in this domain with a rapid and comprehensive grasp of the latest research status, it also offers them a chance to anticipate future development trends, thereby supporting the continuous advances of MOFs-MIPs in food safety detection.

Bimetallic MOF-derived three-dimensional nanoflowers PdCoOx as peroxidase mimic activity for determining total antioxidant capacity

Bimetallic MOF derivatives have shown excellent performance as nano-enzymes in the field of catalysis. Herein, PdCo oxide nanoflowers with three-dimensional flower were prepared by a simple pyrolysis method on a precursor of bimetallic PdCo-MOF. PdCoOx showed excellent peroxidase mimic activity, which could significantly promote the oxidation of TMB by H2O2. Compared with CoOx, the peroxidase mimic activity of the optimized PdCoOx-300 increased by 2.41-fold. PdCoOx-300 has high affinity for TMB and H2O2 with Km values of 0.16 mM and 2.11 mM, which are only 57.03% and 36.87% of HRP, respectively. The highly specific peroxidase mimic activity is conducive to the sensitive detection of H2O2, glucose and ascorbic acid with limit of detection of 10, 100 and 10 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the total antioxidant capacity in the actual beverage samples was conducted, which showed good anti-interference ability and recovery rate.

A core-shell structured AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF SERS substrate for sensitive and selective detection of thiram

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enables pesticide residue monitoring to become facile and efficient. In this study, a core-shell structured gold nanoparticles@ZnCo metal-organic framework (AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF) SERS substrate was designed and successfully synthesized for efficient and selective detection of thiram. The bimetallic ZnCo-MOF shell can not only enrich the targeted molecules in the electromagnetic field because of its excellent absorptive capacity, but also act as a stabilized matrix for protecting the AuNPs from aggregation. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs exhibited a high enhancement factor (EF) of 3.51 × 106 and a low detection limit of 1 × 10-7 mol L-1. Besides, the substrate material showed exceptional stability for up to 28 days at room temperature. The AuNPs@ZnCo-MOFs were used to detect thiram which displayed wide linearity (1 × 10-7 to 1 × 10-4 mol L-1) and high recoveries (83.45-99.61%). Moreover, the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF SERS substrate exhibited excellent anti-interference ability and size selectivity for the target molecules. These indicate that the AuNPs@ZnCo-MOF substrate has great potential for the detection of thiram residues in practical applications.

Selective Analysis of Progesterone in Cosmetic Samples Based on Molecularly Imprinted Solid-Phase Extraction and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

The illegal addition of progesterone to cosmetics could cause serious adverse reactions and pose a serious threat to human health. In this work, a simple, fast and sensitive method was developed by combining molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography (MISPE-HPLC) for the selective determination of progesterone in cosmetics. Chitosan-modified silica is used as the carrier to provide binding sites for the effective conjugation of the target. The obtained molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited excellent adsorption capacity (36.2 mg·g-1), good selectivity and fast mass transfer rate for progesterone. Meanwhile, the prepared MISPE column could eliminate the interference of co-existing substances. Combined MISPE with HPLC, a selective and effective method for detecting progesterone in different cosmetics was achieved. Under the optimum conditions, the established MISPE-HPLC method was successfully used for the detection of progesterone in real samples. The linear range of this method was 1 to 200 μg·mL-1 with a limit of detection of 0.016 μg·mL-1. Therefore, this method could be used for the selective and effective detection of progesterone in different cosmetic samples with complex substrates. We provided an alternative method for the detection of illegal additions in cosmetics.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Using Yeast as a Supporting Substrate

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have gained significant attention as artificial receptors due to their low cost, mild operating conditions, and excellent selectivity. To optimize the synthesis process and enhance the recognition performance, various support materials for molecular imprinting have been explored as a crucial research direction. Yeast, a biological material, offers advantages such as being green and environmentally friendly, low cost, and easy availability, making it a promising supporting substrate in the molecular imprinting process. We focus on the preparation of different types of MIPs involving yeast and elaborate on the specific roles it plays in each case. Additionally, we discuss the advantages and limitations of yeast in the preparation of MIPs and conclude with the challenges and future development trends of yeast in molecular imprinting research.

Fe3 O4 and bimetal-organic framework Zn/Mg composite peroxide-like catalyze luminol chemiluminescence for specific measurement of atropine in Datura plant

Atropine (AT) is an anticholinergic drug. AT is abundantly in Datura plant seeds. Fe3 O4 @Zn/Mg MOF (Fe3 O4 @MOF) composite was synthesized. The compound had a high peroxidase-like activity in a chemiluminescence (CL) reaction. Addition of AT quenched CL. The linear range and limit of detection were 5-600 μg L-1 and 2 × 10-2  μg L-1 . This method is fast, reversible, and selective, without biodegradability effects, high accuracy, and precision for measuring AT in the Datura plant.

Metal-Organic Framework Functionalized Bioceramic Scaffolds with Antioxidative Activity for Enhanced Osteochondral Regeneration

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease that often causes cartilage lesions and even osteochondral damage. Osteochondral defects induced by OA are accompanied by an inflammatory arthrosis microenvironment with overproduced reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in the exacerbation of defects and difficulty regenerating osteochondral tissues. Therefore, it is urgently needed to develop osteochondral scaffolds that can not only promote the integrated regeneration of cartilage and subchondral bone, but also possess ROS-scavenging ability to protect tissues from oxidative stress. Herein, zinc-cobalt bimetallic organic framework (Zn/Co-MOF) functionalized bioceramic scaffolds are designed for repairing osteochondral defects under OA environment. By functionalizing Zn/Co-MOF on the 3D-printed beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds, the Zn/Co-MOF functionalized β-TCP (MOF-TCP) scaffolds with broad-spectrum ROS-scavenging ability are successfully developed. Benefiting from its catalytic active sites and degradation products, Zn/Co-MOF endows the scaffolds with excellent antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties to protect cells from ROS invasion, as well as dual-bioactivities of simultaneously inducing osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation in vitro. Furthermore, in vivo results confirm that MOF-TCP scaffolds accelerate the integrated regeneration of cartilage and subchondral bone in severe osteochondral defects. This study offers a promising strategy for treating defects induced by OA as well as other inflammatory diseases.

A novel atropine electrochemical sensor based on silver nano particle-coated Spirulina platensis multicellular blue-green microalga

In this work, Atropine as the anticholinergic drug was measured using the environmentally friendly sensor. In this regard, Self-cultivated Spirulina platensis with electroless silver was employed as a powder amplifier in carbon paste electrode modification. Also, 1-Hexyl-3 methylimidazolium Hexafluorophosphate (HMIM PF₆) ion liquid as a conductor binder was used in the suggested electrode construction. Atropine determination was investigated by voltammetry methods. According to voltammograms, the electrochemical behavior of atropine depends on pH, and pH 10.0 was used as the optimal condition. Moreover, the diffusion control process for the electro-oxidation of atropine was verified by the scan rate study, so the diffusion coefficient (D∼ 3.0136×10^-4cm²/sec) value was computed from the chronoamperometry study. Furthermore, responses of the fabricated sensor were linear in the concentration range from 0.01 to 800 μM, and the lowest detection limit of the Atropine determination was obtained at 5 nM. Moreover, the stability, reproducibility, and selectivity factors of the suggested sensor were confirmed by the results. Finally, the recovery percentages for atropine sulfate ampoule (94.48-101.58), and water (98.01-101.3) approve of the applicability of the proposed sensor to Atropine determination in real samples.

Constructing hollow ZIF-8/CDs@MIPs fluorescent sensor from Osmanthus leaves to specifically recognize bovine hemoglobin

To develop non-toxic, highly efficient and selective fluorescence sensors was a significance research. In this work, a novel hollow fluorescence sensor was designed with biomass carbon dots (CDs), ZIF-8 and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) via aqueous polymerization. The results demonstrated such unique structure fluorescence sensor exhibited fast response time, excellent stability and highly selectively towards bovine hemoglobin (BHb). Even in a complex environment, the hollow fluorescence sensor (H-ZIF-8/CDs@MIPs) still has a good recognition effect on BHb. Under an optimized condition, the hollow fluorescence sensor was quenched linearly with BHb concentration in the range of 0.058-4.5 μM with the detection limit of 15.6 nM. In addition, a possible quenching mechanism of hollow fluorescence towards BHb was confirmed resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the actual application process, the hollow fluorescence sensor showed a better detection performance towards BHb with the recoveries ranged of 98.6-101.1 %. This work provided a strategy to design green and unique hollow fluorescence sensor for practical application.

Capsulation of red emission chromophore into the CoZn ZIF as nanozymes for on-site visual cascade detection of phosphate ions, o-phenylenediamine, and benzaldehyde

Accurate on-site profiling of the pollutants is of vital significance for estimating environmental pollution. Herein, we propose a paper-based fluorescence-sensing system to precisely report the level of multiple pollutants. A high-performance fluorescence-sensor for apparatus-free and visual on-site tandem precisely reporting phosphate ions (Pi), o-phenylenediamine (OPD), and benzaldehyde (BA) levels have been fabricated successfully by introducing synthesized red emission (>600 nm) fluorescent chromophore 10-(diethylamino)-3-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrobenzo [c]xanthen-12-ium (HTD) into the environment of CoZn zeolitic imidazolate framework (CoZn ZIF) by a simple stirring method. CoZn ZIF@HTD with the bimetallic nodes not merely provided main Zn²⁺ sites for specific recognition of Pi to generate an enhanced red fluorescent optical signal, Co³⁺/Co²⁺ exhibited excellent peroxidase-like activity for the catalytic oxidation of OPD substrate in the presence of H₂O₂ resulting in color changing from red to yellow. Subsequently, the obvious yellow fading of the OPDox species took place with the addition of BA. By virtue of the sensitively visual tandem detection of Pi, OPD, and BA, the sensor can be applied to real wastewater samples. Meanwhile, this fluorescent sensor was further adopted for practical application in confocal cell imaging and security inks. Overall, this work established a fluorescent sensing system with integrated multifunctional applications for environmental and biological samples, implying the great potential for simultaneous real-time cascade detection of various important pollutants with the merit of low-cost, time-saving, and easy-to-use.

Modification of bimetal Zn/ Mg MOF with nanoparticles Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@SiO2, investigation of the peroxidase-like activity of these compounds by calorimetry and fluorimetry methods

In this article; the bimetal metal-organic framework Zn/Mg (Zn/Mg MOF) is synthesized. Then Zn/Mg MOF bimetal was combined with Fe₃O₄ and Fe₃O₄@SiO₂, and composites of Fe₃O₄@ SiO₂/MOF/Dextrin, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/MOF, Fe₃O₄@MOF/Dextrin and Fe₃O₄@MOF made. The peroxidase-like activity of these compounds was investigated and compared by calorimetric Resazurin (Rz) and O-phenylenediamine (OPD); (Rz-H₂O₂, OPD-H₂O₂) and fluorimetric Rz and terephtalic acid (TA); (Rz-H₂O₂, TA-H₂O₂). The Fe₃O₄@ MOF/Dextrin composite has the highest peroxidase-like activity. The effect factors (amount of pH (6), the values of TA (1.37 mM), H₂O₂ (0.025 mM), reaction time (8.15 min), and amount of Composite (116.67 mg)) to increase the catalytic activity of Fe₃O₄@ MOF/Dextrin measured by chemometrics method. The most suitable linear range of the calibration curve by the TA-H₂O₂ -Composite fluorimetric method is 1-600 μg L^-1, and the detection limit is 2.27 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD%) for measuring concentration atropine 1 μg L^-1 (n = 6) is 1.18%. Finally, from this system for measuring atropine extracted by the Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method in two types of plants, D. Innoxia north and west and D. stramonium north and west of Iran (118.25 μg L^-1, 79.80 μg L^-1) and (18.477 μg L^-1, 9.27 μg L^-1) used, respectively.

Recent Advances in Construction and Application of Metal-Nanozymes in Pharmaceutical Analysis

Nanozymes, made of emerging nanomaterials, have similar activity to natural enzyme and exhibit promising applications in in the fields of environment, biology and medicine, and food safety science. In recent years, with the deep finding and research to nanozymes by researchers, its application in field of pharmaceutical analysis has emerged gradually, possessing great significance in drug safety evaluation and quality control. This review summarizes the construction of metal nanozymes, strategies to improve their performance and their application in pharmaceutical detection and analysis, especially in detection of target analytes consisting of small molecule medicine macromolecule, toxic and others, which proposes theoretical foundation for development of nanozymes in this field. At the same time, it also provides opportunities and challenges for the construction and application of new nanozymes.

CuCo2S4 nanozyme-based stimulus-responsive hydrogel kit for rapid point-of-care testing of uric acid

An efficient analysis platform composed of nanozyme-based hydrogel kit and smartphone was constructed for on-site detection of uric acid (UA) in a rapid and realiable manner. CuCo₂S₄ nanoparticles (CuCo₂S₄ NPs) as a peroxidase mimic were successfully prepared and the peroxidase-like activity and catalytic mechanism were studied in detail. The hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) stimulus-responsive nanozyme-based hydrogel kit was manufactured by integrating agarose, CuCo₂S₄ NPs, and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into the cap of centrifuge tube. H₂O₂ generated via UA oxidation acts as stimulus signal, which triggers the oxidation of TMB to form blue product (oxTMB) under the catalysis of CuCo₂S₄ NPs, resulting in the color response of the constructed kit. The color image of the kit was captured by a smartphone built-in camera and converted into color intensity using ImageJ software, thus achieving the quantitative determination of UA. The portable kit possesses high selectivity and was used to monitor UA in human serum with satisfactory results (recovery was in the range 95.8-107.3% and RSD was not greater than 4.6%). The established sensing platform is convenient and reliable, which provides a new strategy for point-of-care testing of UA and has a broad prospect in the fields of chemical sensing and biomedical.

A review on magnetic sensors for monitoring of hazardous pollutants in water resources

Water resources have long been of interest to humans and have become a serious issue in all aspects of human life. The disposal of hazardous pollutants in water resources is one of the biggest global concerns and poses many risks to human health and aquatic life. Therefore, the control of hazardous pollutants in water resources plays an important role, when it comes to evaluating water quality. Due to low toxicity, good electrical conductivity, facile functionalization, and easy preparation, magnetic materials have become a good alternative in recent years to control hazardous pollutants in water resources. In the present study, the idea of using magnetic sensors in controlling and monitoring of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, and organic pollutants have been reviewed. The water pollutants in drinking water, groundwater, surface water, and seawater have been discussed. The toxicology of water hazardous pollutants has also been reviewed. Then, the magnetic materials were discussed as sensors for controlling and monitoring pollutants. Finally, future remarks and perspectives on magnetic nanosensors for controlling hazardous pollutants in water resources and environmental applications were explained.

A sensitive colori/fluorimetric nanoprobe for detection of polyphenols using peroxidase-mimic plasma-modified MoO3 nanoparticles

Herein, MoO₃ nanoparticles were synthesized and modified using Argon cold plasma treatment (Ar-MoO₃NPs) for the first time. Various characterization studies were performed using various methods, including SEM, XRD, and FTIR techniques. The catalytic activity of MoO₃NPs before and after modification was investigated using fluorometric and colorimetric experiments. The results indicated that the enzyme-mimic activity of MoO₃NPs increased after plasma-surface modification (1.5 fold). Also, a fluorometric method based on the oxidation of a non-fluorescent terephthalic acid by Ar-MoO₃NPs in the presence of H₂O₂ and the production of a compound with a high emission was designed for polyphenols detection. Quercetin was used as a polyphenol standard for the optimization of the proposed system. Under the optimum conditions, the dynamic ranges of the calibration graphs and the detection limits were calculated for different polyphenols (μmol/L): quercetin (2-232, 12.22), resveratrol (2-270, 61.89), curcumin (39-400, 38.89), gallic acid (2-309, 21.5) and ellagic acid (39-309, 16.25). Also, the precision of the method, which was expressed as RSD%, was in the range of 0.286-1.19%. The proposed system could detect individual polyphenols and total polyphenols in three different fruit extracts (apple, orange, and grapes) with high sensitivity. The obtained total concentrations of polyphenols in real samples were comparable to those calculated by the spectrophotometric method. So, a novel and sensitive optical nanosensor for the detection of polyphenols was reported as an alternative to the routine Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric technique.

Dual enzymes-mimic activity of nanolayered manganese-calcium oxide for fluorometric determination of metformin

There are different analytical methods available for the determination of metformin, as an oral hypoglycemic and antidiabetic drug, in biological samples. However, most of these methods suffer from some drawbacks, including high-priced materials and equipment, damaging chemical reagents, time-consuming nature, and tedious operation procedures. So, in this work a new, sensitive and simple method was reported for the detection of metformine. In this regard, nanolayered manganese-calcium oxide (NL-MnCaO₂) were synthesized and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) techniques. Also, we studied the enzyme-like activity of synthesized particles and reported a bifunctional nanozyme, which performs the dual roles for peroxidase and catalase-mimicking. The results demonstrated the hindering effect of metformin on the peroxidase-mimic activity of NL-MnCaO₂ and this effect was increased by raising metformin concentration. So, a sensitive fluorometric detection system was designed for the analytical assay of metformin, based on the terephthalic acid (TA)-H₂O₂ reaction with NL-MnCaO₂. An acceptable linearity was observed between the metformin concentration and fluorescence quenching of the system in the range of 0.07-0.77 mM. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.17 μM and 0.96 μM, respectively. The proposed system was applied for the estimation of metformin concentration in serum samples by recoveries of 86.68-106%. So, the proposed fluorometric method provides some main advantages such as wide linear range, low detection limit, rapid detections, high sensitivity, and good practicability for the determination of metformin in biological samples.

Bimetallic molecularly imprinted nanozyme: Dual-mode detection platform

Molecularly imprinted polymer nanozyme (MIL-101(Co,Fe)@MIP) with bimetallic active sites and high-efficiency peroxidase-like (POD-like) activity were synthesized for the ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of vanillin with high selectivity and sensitivity. Compared with the monometallic nanozyme, the POD-like activity of bimetallic nanozyme was greatly enhanced by changing the electronic structure and surface structure. Ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of vanillin in aqueous solution was realized by vanillin entering specific imprinted cavities and blocking the molecular channels on the surface of MIL-101(Co,Fe)@MIP and the dual-mode visual detection was also realized. The limits of detection were as low as 104 nM and 198 nM, respectively. The method proposed in this paper was applied to the real samples of ice cream and candy. And the recoveries were between 93.3% and 105.5%, which also reached a satisfactory degree. The further detection of dexamethasone and prednisone, two drugs belonging to glucocorticoid, proved that the nanozyme analysis method based on MIL-101(Co,Fe)@MIP could be developed into a sensing platform.

Targeted degradation of refractory organic compounds in wastewaters based on molecular imprinting catalysts

Efficient removal of low-concentration refractory pollutants is a crucial problem to ensuring water safety. The use of heterogeneous catalysis of molecular imprinting technology combined with traditional catalysts is a promising method to improve removal efficiency. Presently, the research into molecular imprinting targeting catalysts focuses mainly on material preparation and performance optimization. However, more researchers are investigating other applications of imprinting materials. This review provides recent progress in photocatalyst preparation, electrocatalyst, and Fenton-like catalysts synthesized by molecular imprinting. The principle and control points of target catalysts prepared by precipitation polymerization (PP) and surface molecular imprinting (S-MIP) are introduced. Also, the application of imprinted catalysts in targeted degradation of drugs, pesticides, environmental hormones, and other refractory pollutants is summarized. In addition, the reusability and stability of imprinted catalyst in water treatment are discussed, and the possible ecotoxicity risk is analyzed. Finally, we appraised the prospects, challenges, and opportunities of imprinted catalysts in the advanced oxidation process. This paper provides a reference for the targeted degradation of refractory pollutants and the preparation of targeted catalysts.

A novel approach for the preparation of core-shell MOF/polymer composites as mixed-mode stationary phase

The nickel organic framework capped with polyvinylpyrrolidone was prepared and synergistically immobilized onto porous silica surface as the mixed-mode stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography. Here, polyvinylpyrrolidone firstly was chosen as functional molecules to change morphology and size of the metal organic framework. The silica microspheres were then modified by them via a simple bonding method rather than in-situ growth method with the aid of electrostatic interaction commonly used before. The stationary phase showed flexible selectivity for separation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds, especially for hydrophilic compounds such as carbohydrates, alkaloids and sulfonamides etc. The chromatographic behaviors were evaluated by investigating various factors, and a typical mixed-mode retention feature of the column was observed. The composites could be prepared repetitively, and relative standard deviations of retention time of objective compounds among different batches were less than 1.75%. It also showed excellent chromatographic reproducibility, stability and potentiality for application in real samples. In short, the composites can be used for a feasible option for analysis of multiple compounds as the mixed-mode stationary phase and it provides a general approach for preparing MOFs-based composites by changing morphology and size of MOFs.

Simultaneous Determination of Furanic Compounds and Acrylamide in Insect-Based Foods by HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS Employing a Functionalized Mesostructured Silica as Sorbent in Solid-Phase Extraction

Insect-based products are novel foods (NF) that merit careful study. For this reason, in this work a method has been developed for the simultaneous analysis of four food processing contaminants (FPC), acrylamide (AA), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, (HMF), 5-methylfurfural (MF) and furfural (F), in insect-based products (bars, crackers and flours) by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). The method consisted of a solid-liquid extraction (SLE) with acidified water, followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE), using 100 mg of a sorbent based on mesostructured silica with a large pore functionalized with amino groups (SBA-15-LP-NH2). The analytical method was properly optimized and validated in a representative bar sample of pineapple & coconut with cricket flour (Ins-B-Pine-Coco) showing good accuracy, with recoveries ranging from 70-101% for the four analytes and adequate precision (RSD < 9%). Good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.995) and low method quantification limits for AA (between 1.3-1.4 µg/g), F (between 7.9-8.8 µg/g), MF (between 3.1-6.5 µg/g) and HMF (between 1.5-3.3 µg/g) were also obtained in all samples studied. The proposed method was successfully applied in eleven insect-based foods. Results revealed that insect-based bars can be a good alternative to traditional cereal bars to reduce dietary exposure to HMF; but, in order to reduce the exposure to AA, alternative formulations must be evaluated in the design of innovative insect-based crackers.

Polydopamine molecularly imprinted polymer coated on a biomimetic iron-based metal-organic framework for highly selective fluorescence detection of metronidazole

Molecular imprinting technology was used to coat polydopamine (PDA) onto MIL-53(Fe) surface by simple self-polymerization. The MIL-53(Fe)@MIP composite with enhanced peroxidase-like activity and specific target recognition function was synthesized and selected to construct a fluorescence sensor to detect metronidazole (MNZ). Since the substrate terephthalic acid was incorporated in the framework of MIL-53(Fe)@MIP, no additional luminescent substrate was required. This avoided the interference of the substrate on the enzymatic detection system and improved the accuracy of the assay. The characteristics of MIL-53(Fe)@MIP composite were investigated and confirmed by systematic analyses. The experimental results proved that the sensor provided satisfactory performances for quantitative determination of MNZ in wide linear range from 1 to 200 μM with low limit of detection as 53.4 nM. Potential interfering substances such as common cations and anions, amino acids, other antibiotics, sugars, and food additive were studied to show negligible effect on the assay, allowing the practical application to different fields including milk and human serum by the standard addition method. The recoveries were obtained between 93.2 and 102%, and the RSD was less than 3%.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Doped with Carbon Nanotube with Aid of Metal-Organic Gel for Drug Delivery Systems

PURPOSE

The incidence of breast cancer worldwide has been on the rise since the late 1970s, and it has become a common tumor that threatens women's health. Aminoglutethimide (AG) is a common treatment of breast cancer. However, current treatments require frequent dosing that results in unstable plasma concentration and low bioavailability, risking serious adverse reactions. Our goal was to develop a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based delivery system to control the release of AG and demonstrate the availability of this drug delivery system (DDS), which was doped with carbon nanotube with aid of metal-organic gel.

METHODS

Preparation of MIP was optimized by key factors including composition of formula, ratio of monomers and drug loading concentration.

RESULTS

By using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and metal-organic gels (MOGs), MIP doubled the specific surface area, pore volume tripled and the IF was 1.6 times than the reference. Compared with commercial tablets, the relative bioavailability was 143.3% and a more stable release appeared.

CONCLUSIONS

The results highlight the influence of MWCNT and MOGs on MIP, which has great potential as a DDS.

An optical sensing platform based on hexacyanoferrate intercalated layered double hydroxide nanozyme for determination of chromium in water

In this work, hexacyanoferrate intercalated Ni/Al LDH (Ni/Al-Fe(CN)₆ LDH) nanozyme was synthesized by one-pot co-precipitation method and used for determination of chromium in water samples by employing its peroxidase mimicking activity. The synthesized nanozyme can effectively catalyze the oxidation of fluorometric peroxidase substrate terephthalic acid by H₂O₂ to produce a highly fluorescent product. It was found that Cr(VI) promotes the peroxidase-like activity of Ni/Al-Fe(CN)₆ LDH and this effect was intensified by increasing the Cr(VI) concentration. Several variables affecting the fluorescence intensity including the concentration of nanoparticles and reagents as well as reaction time were investigated and optimized. Under the optimal conditions, good linearity was observed in the range of 0.067-10 μM Cr(VI), and limit of detection and quantification were found to be 0.039 and 0.131 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the developed method showed good applicability for the determination of total Cr based on the oxidation of Cr (III) to Cr (VI). The applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by analyzing various environmental water samples. The presented nanozyme displayed superior benefits in terms of reusability, repeatability, cost and environment-friendly features. The present work aims to expand LDHs based enzyme mimics to optical sensor fields.

Scalable fabrication of tunable titanium nanotubes via sonoelectrochemical process for biomedical applications

Titanium does not react well with the human tissues and due to its bio-inert nature the surface modification has yet to be well-studied. In this study, the sonoelectrochemical process has been carried out to generate TiO₂ nanotube arrays on implantable Ti 6-4. All the prepared nanotubes fill with the vancomycin by immersion and electrophoresis method. Drug-releasing properties, antibacterial behavior, protein adsorption and cell attachment of drug-modified nanotubes are examined by UV-vis, flow cytometry, modified disc diffusion, BSA adsorption, and FESEM, respectively. The most uniform morphology, appropriate drug release, cell viability behavior and antibacterial properties can be achieved by samples anodized in the range of 60-75 V. Also improves the adsorption of BSA protein in bone healing and promotes osteoblast activity and osseointegration. Drug loading efficiency increases up to 60% via electrophoresis comparing the immersion method for anodized sample in 75 V. While electrophoresis does not affect the amount of vancomycin adsorption for lower voltages. Besides, the present study indicates that an anodized sample without drug loading has no antibacterial activity. Moreover, 28-days drug releasing from nanotubes is investigated by mathematical formula according to Fickian's law to find an effective dose of loaded drug.
