Simple and effective dispersive micro-solid phase extraction procedure for simultaneous determination of polycyclic aromatic compounds in fresh and marine waters

An ultrasound assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction and a composite ionic liquid-metal organic framework for sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons analysis in fruit juice and environmental water samples

Aluminum-based metal organic framework composite containing ionic liquid was prepared and used as sorbent for extraction of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in list of priority pollutants of United States Environmental Protection Agency before their analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The dispersive micro solid-phase extraction method, known as a simple and fast method, was preferred as the extraction method. The optimized parameter conditions were 5 mL of sample solution, 10 min sonication by ultrasonic bath, 30 mg of sorbent, 30 °C extraction temperature, 0.1 mL of hexane as elution solvent with 5 min elution time. The suggested method presented that limit of detection and limit of quantification were in the range of 0.01-0.10 μg l-1, and 0.04-0.33 μg L-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day repeatability were within the ranges of 1.18-4.88 % and 1.02-5.06 %, respectively. The recoveries for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in peach juice, cherry juice, tap water and rain water samples were obtained in the range of 84.9-99.9 % for spiked 5, 50 and 100 μg l-1 standard polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons solution.

Exploration of novel solid-phase extraction modes for analysis of multiclass emerging contaminants

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) has gained an essential role in environmental analytical chemistry. Classic off-line SPE coupled with LC-MS/MS systems creates powerful analytical procedures for ultratrace analysis of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in water. But, being associated with tedious work and large consumption of materials, alternative SPE modes are becoming interesting. As so, the study focuses on development, evaluation, and overall comparison of established and novel SPE modes. Off-line SPE, dispersive micro SPE (DMSPE), and 'fast' single-pump on-line SPE were explored, using commercially available sorbents. Their efficiency was evaluated on their performance in water analysis of 20 multiclass CECs. Hydrophilic-lipophilic sorbent and mixture of C18/C8 sorbents were the best choice for off-line and DMSPE, respectively. All optimized SPE modes coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS reached environmentally-relevant limits of detection (LODs 0.1-12 ng L-1), acceptable repeatability (<20 % RSD), and exhibited less than ±30 % matrix effects in real river water sample. Among all, on-line SPE showed a potential to fully replace the well-established off-line SPE and even improve analytical performance. This was due to the best repeatability (<10 % RSD), automatization, simplicity, the highest multiplexing capacity, as well as comparable LODs of <2 ng L-1. DMSPE is, on the other hand, the most innovative and could be seen as a quick and green alternative to off-line SPE for determination of semi-to-nonpolar CECs, but within sub-10 ng L-1 range. Overall, the study shows workflow for the exploration of important and promising sample pretreatment techniques in water analysis. Comparison of the developed three SPE-UHPLC-MS/MS methods suggests that alternative SPE modes can compete with the well-established off-line SPE and can even improve the analysis quality if properly applied.

Nitro-PAHs: Occurrences, ecological consequences, and remediation strategies for environmental restoration

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) are persistent pollutants that have been introduced into the environment as a result of human activities. They are produced when PAHs undergo oxidation and are highly resistant to degradation, resulting in prolonged exposure and significant health risks for wildlife and humans. Nitro-PAHs' potential to induce cancer and mutations has raised concerns about their harmful effects. Furthermore, their ability to accumulate in the food chain seriously threatens the ecosystem and human health. Moreover, nitro-PAHs can disrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system, leading to reproductive and developmental problems in humans and other organisms. Reducing nitro-PAHs in the environment through source management, physical removal, and chemical treatment is essential to mitigate the associated environmental and human health risks. Recent studies have focused on improving nitro-PAHs' phytoremediation by incorporating microorganisms and biostimulants. Microbes can break down nitro-PAHs into less harmful substances, while biostimulants can enhance plant growth and metabolic activity. By combining these elements, the effectiveness of phytoremediation for nitro-PAHs can be increased. This study aimed to investigate the impact of introducing microbial and biostimulant agents on the phytoremediation process for nitro-PAHs and identify potential solutions for addressing the environmental risks associated with these pollutants.

A green method for the determination of illicit drugs in wastewater and surface waters-based on a semi-automated liquid-liquid microextraction device

Liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) is a simple, low-cost, and eco-friendly technique that enables the detection of trace concentrations of organic contaminants in water samples. In this work, a novel customized microextraction device was developed for the LPME extraction and preconcentration of nine illicit drugs in surface water and influent and effluent wastewater samples, followed by analysis by GC-MS without derivatization. The customized device was semi-automated by coupling it with a peristaltic pump to perform the collection of the upper layer of the organic phase. The extraction parameters affecting the LPME efficiency were optimized. The optimized conditions were: 100 µL of a toluene/DCM/EtAc mixture as extractor solvent; 30min of extraction time under vortex agitation (500rpm) and a solution pH of 11.6. The limits of detection and quantification ranged from 10.5ng L-1 (ethylone) to 22.0ng L-1 (methylone), and from 34.9ng L-1 to 73.3ng L-1 for these same compounds, respectively. The enrichment factors ranged from 39.7 (MDMA) to 117 (cocaethylene) and the relative recoveries ranged from 80.4% (N-ethylpentylone) to 120% (cocaine and cocaine-d3). The method was applied to real surface water, effluent, and influent wastewater samples collected in Salvador City, Bahia, Brazil. Cocaine was the main drug detected and quantified in wastewater samples, and its concentration ranged from 312ng L-1 to 1,847ng L-1. Finally, the AGREE metrics were applied to verify the greenness of the proposed method, and an overall score of 0.56 was achieved, which was considered environmentally friendly.

Multivariate optimization of a green procedure for determination of emerging polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles in PM2.5 from sites with different characteristics

Emerging polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) contributes significantly to the health risk associated with inhaling polluted air. However, there is a lack of analytical methods with the needed performance to their determination. This study presents the optimization and validation for the first time of a green microscale extraction procedure for the determination of twenty-one PANHs, including carbazole, indole, and quinolone classes, in particulate matter (PM2.5) samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A simplex-centroid mixture design and full factorial design (23) were employed to optimize the following extraction parameters: type and volume of solvent, sample size, extraction time, and necessity of a cleanup step. Low limits of detection and quantification (LOD < 0.97 pg m-3 and LOQ < 3.24 pg m-3, respectively) were obtained in terms of matrix-matched calibration. The accuracy and precision of the method were adequate, with recoveries in three levels between 73 to 120% and intraday and interday relative standard deviations from 2.0 to 12.9% and 7.3 to 18.9%, respectively. The green character of the method was evaluated using the Analytical Greenness (AGREE) tool, where a score of 0.69 was obtained, indicating a great green procedure. The method was applied to PM2.5 samples collected from sites with different characteristics; the concentrations ranged from 69.3 pg m-3 (2-methylcarbazole) to 11,874 pg m-3 (carbazole) for individual PANHs and from 2306 to 24,530 pg m-3 for ∑21PANHs. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering enabled discrimination of the sampling sites according to the PANHs concentrations. The score plots formed two distinct groups, one with samples containing higher concentrations of PANHs, corresponding to sites with a major influence from diesel emissions, and another group with minor PANH contents, corresponding to sites impacted by emissions from urban traffic and industrial activities.

Halonaphthoquinones: A group of emerging disinfection byproducts of high toxicity in drinking water

Aromatic halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) have received particular attention in recent years due to their high toxicity. However, most relevant researches at present focused merely on halo-monocyclic DBPs, while halo-polycyclic DBPs were scarcely explored. In this study, a new group of halo-bicyclic DBPs termed as halonaphthoquinones (HNQs) was systematically studied. By coupling with vacuum centrifugal concentrator, a SPE-UPLC-MS/MS method with high accuracy and sensitivity was developed to detect five semi-volatile HNQs in drinking water, which achieved the detection limits in the range of 0.05-0.24 ng/L. Five HNQs were identified using this method with 100% detection frequency at concentrations up to 136.7 ng/L in drinking water originated from seven water treatment plants. The cytotoxicity of the five tested HNQs in CHO-K1 cells (IC₅₀ from 3.17 to 13.18 μM) was comparable to the most toxic known carbonaceous DBP in drinking water, iodoacetic acid (IC₅₀=2.95 μM). Meanwhile, the cytotoxicity of five tested HNQs were also higher than 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (IC₅₀=21.73 μM) which is hundreds to thousands of times more toxic than regulated DBPs, indicating the significant toxicity risk of HNQ DBPs. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first analytical method for analysis of HNQ DBPs, and the first set of data on the occurrence and cytotoxicity of HNQ DBPs in drinking water. These findings are meaningful for probing deeply into the presence of varied halo-polycyclic DBPs in the aqueous environment.

A hierarchical porous composite magnetic sorbent of reduced graphene oxide embedded in polyvinyl alcohol cryogel for solvent assisted-solid phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

A hierarchical porous composite magnetic sorbent was fabricated and applied to the dispersive solvent assisted-solid phase extraction of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A sorbent was first prepared by incorporating graphene oxide, calcium carbonate and magnetite nanoparticles into a polyvinyl alcohol cryogel. The graphene oxide was converted to reduced graphene oxide using ascorbic acid and a hierarchical porous structure was produced by reacting hydrochloric acid with incorporated calcium carbonate to generate carbon dioxide bubbles which created a second network. Before extracting the target analytes, extraction solvent was introduced into the hierarchical pore network of the sorbent. The extraction was based on the partition between the analytes and introduced extraction solvent and the adsorption of analytes on reduced graphene oxide. The extraction efficiency was enhanced through π-π and hydrophobic interactions between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and reduced graphene oxide and extraction solvent. The extracted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were determined using HPLC coupled with fluorescence detector. The developed method was applied to extract polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in disposable diaper, coffee and tea samples and recoveries from 84.5 to 99.4% were achieved with relative standard deviations below 7%. Method development using chemometric tools for determination of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in bottled mineral waters

A simple method was developed to determine 14 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in bottled waters, based on dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (d-µ-SPE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Extraction was optimized using 2 ^k-1 factorial and Doehlert experimental designs. Optimized conditions were 80 mg C18, 25 min extraction at 1000 rpm, and 6 min desorption time. Repeatability was below 17 % for all EDCs. LOD and LOQ varied from 1.60 ng L^-1 (estradiol, E2) to 23.2 ng L^-1 (dimethylphthalate, DMP) and from 5.33 ng L^-1 (E2) to 77.3 ng L^-1 (DMP). We found DMP and bisphenol A (BPA) in samples after the heat treatment. DMP was up to 58.7 µg L^-1, while BPA was up to 1.34 µg L^-1. Tolerance of daily intake (TDI) for DMP were 2.50-2.94 µg kg^-1 day^-1 (children) and 1.43-1.68 µg kg^-1 day^-1 (adults). TDI for BPA were 0.03-0.07 µg kg^-1 day^-1 (children) and 0.01-0.04 µg kg^-1 day^-1 (adults).

Aramid-wrapped CNT hybrid sol–gel sorbent for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

This work describes the preparation of an analytical microextraction sorbent using a simple and versatile sol–gel hybrid composite, i.e., aramid oligomers wrapping multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) covalently bonded to a porous silica network.

Magnetic amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks as a novel solid support in ionic liquids-based effervescent tablets for efficient extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in milks

Herein, a kind of novel multi-layer core-shell nanocomposites (NSPN) was prepared by employing SiO₂ and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymers as modifiers and amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (NH₂-MIL101(Fe)) as coating. It was referred to as the NSPN and ILs-based effervescence-assisted dispersive solid-phase microextraction, hereafter abbreviated as NIE-DSM. In terms of extraction efficiency, SiO₂ and PVP as modifiers and NH₂-MIL(Fe) as coating onto the surface of NiFe₂O₄ cores played a synergistically enhancing effect on adsorption/extraction. Effervescent tablets were prepared by integrating the NSPN magnetic nanoparticles as adsorbents with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) as extractants as well as acidic and alkaline sources. Under vigorous dispersion of CO₂ bubbles, the NIE-DSM method realized the goal of rapidly diffusing and separating the adsorbent/extractant (~3 min) without needing conventional vortexing or centrifugation step. Consequently, the NIE-DSM approach combined dispersion and adsorption/extractant in a synchronous way. Under optimized conditions, the NIE-DSM/HPLC-FLD method gave low limits of detection (0.008-0.034 μg kg^-1) and satisfactory extraction recoveries (74.1-101.6%) for five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; fluorene, anthracene, pyrene, chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene) in milk samples. The intra-day and inter-day precision, expressed as relative standard deviations, was < 5.9% and 6.5%, respectively, demonstrating a high precision. Owing to no requirement for electrical power, this method shows great potential for outdoor monitoring of trace-level PAHs in food matrices.

Customized dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction device combined with micro-desorption for the simultaneous determination of 39 multiclass pesticides in environmental water samples

A dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (d-µ-SPE) procedure was developed for the simultaneous extraction of 39 multiclass pesticides, containing a variety of chemical groups (organophosphate, organochlorine, pyrethroid, strobilurin, thiocarbamate, triazole, imidazole, and triazine), from water samples. A customized d-µ-SPE glass device was combined with a multi-tube platform vortex and a micro-desorption unit (Whatman Mini-UniPrep G2 syringeless filter), which allowed the unique simultaneous desorption, extract filtration, and injection. A simplex-centroid mixture design and Doehlert design were employed to optimize the extraction conditions. The optimized extraction conditions consisted of an extraction time of 30 min, an addition of 6.74 % of NaCl into 100 mL of water sample, and a desorption time of 24 min with 500 µL of EtAc. The procedure provided a low limit of detection (LOD), ranging from 0.51 ng L^-1 (4,4-DDE) to 22.4 ng L^-1 (dimethoate), and an enrichment factor ranging from 72.5 (dimethoate) to 200 (tebuconazole). The relative recoveries of the pesticides from spiked freshwater and seawater ranged from 74.2 % (endrin) to 123 % (molinate). The proposed procedure was applied to detect the presence of multiclass pesticides in environmental water samples. Three pesticides commonly applied in Brazil, namely, malathion, dimethoate, and lambda-cyhalothrin, were detected in concentrations ranging from <LOD to 120 ng L^-1 (dimethoate).

Novel materials for dispersive (micro) solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in environmental water samples: A review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are hazardous environmental pollutants that possess mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs in environmental water samples are very low, and it is challenging to detect such levels directly by the analytical instrumentation. Thus, the extraction of PAHs using suitable extraction methodology is required for sample cleanup and analyte enrichment. Dispersive solid-phase extraction has several advantages over conventional approaches for the extraction of PAHs from environmental water samples. In this article, we critically evaluate the role of different nano and micro sorbent materials employed in the extraction of PAHs. Carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymeric nanocomposites, ionic-liquid based composites, and silica-based materials are explicitly covered. This review also provides insight on functional components of all types of sorbents and their way of interaction with PAHs. The factors affecting the dispersive (micro) solid phase extraction of PAHs such as the design of the sorbent, the ratio of functional material to magnetic core, sample volume, amount of sorbent, extraction and desorption times, desorption solvent and its volume, salt addition, and sample pH are critically appraised. Finally, a brief account on the accomplishments, limitations, and challenges associated with such methods is provided.

Facile preparation of reduced graphene oxide/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite as magnetic sorbents for enrichment of estrogens

Reduced graphene oxide/ZnFe₂O₄ (rGO/ZnFe₂O₄) nanocomposite was facile prepared and applied as magnetic sorbent for the extraction of estrogens including 17β-estradiol, 17α-estradiol, estrone and hexestrol from water, soil, and fish samples prior to HPLC analysis. The rGO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The experimental parameters affecting the efficiency of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) including the amount of material, extraction time, pH, temperature, desorption solvents, desorption time, and desorption solvent volume were investigated respectively. With the developed method, good linearity was observed in the range of 0.05-500 ng/mL with the correlation coefficients (R²) between 0.9978 and 0.9993. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (S/N = 10) were achieved at 0.01-0.02 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively. The enrichment factors were calculated as the range of 241-288. Using rGO/ZnFe₂O₄ nanocomposite as the sorbent, the developed MSPE followed by HPLC analysis, was applied to analysis of estrogens in river water, soil and fish samples. The method has the potential application in the extraction and preconcentration ultra trace compounds in complex matrices, such as environmental and biological samples.
