Abstract
In this work, a stable ratiometric nanofluorescent probe for the detection of 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA), a Bacillus anthracis biomarker, was developed based on confinement-induced emission enhancement of cationic styrylpyridine salt derivative L in MCM-22 molecular sieve pores. The cationic L and the lanthanide Tb3+ were loaded into the pores of the molecular sieve by electrostatic interaction with the negatively charged AlO4 tetrahedron unit, and L exhibited enhanced red fluorescence emission as a stable fluorescence reference mark in the nanoprobe platform due to the restricted molecular torsion of L in the pores of MCM-22. At the same time, the characteristic green fluorescence emission of Tb3+ can be excited by energy transfer due to the "antenna effect" of DPA. The prepared Tb-L@MCM-22 nanoprobe showed specific selectivity and stable fluorescence ratiometric detection of DPA in tap water, lake water, bovine serum and actual bacterial spores. Benefiting from the confinement-induced fluorescence enhancement effect of L in the MCM-22 molecular sieve pores, the obtained Tb-L@MCM-22 can provide a stable reference signal for the fluorescence ratiometric detection of DPA with a limit of detection (LOD) of 78.6 nM and 1.310 × 104 spores per mL. More importantly, combining of the Tb-L@MCM-22 based DPA detection test strips with a smartphone app demonstrated a stable, convenient and rapid method for detecting of anthrax biomarkers.

Abstract
The abnormal concentration of anthrax spore biomarker 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (2,6-DPA) will seriously affect public health. Therefore, a sensitive and rapid assay for 2,6-DPA monitoring is of vital importance. In this work, novel nano-sized amorphous Eu-NH2BDC (amEu-NH2BDC) and amorphous Tb-NH2BDC (amTb-NH2BDC) metal organic frameworks are prepared by adjusting the ratio of metal and ligand, respectively. Both of them exhibit highly sensitive and selective ratiometric fluorescence detection for 2,6-DPA with wider linear range and lower detection limit in aqueous solutions and human serum. Attributed to the coordination effect of 2,6-DPA in triggering the characteristic fluorescence emissions of Eu3+or Tb3+ by replacing coordinated solvent molecules, as evidenced by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, the fluorescence lifetimes analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) simulations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, the amEu-NH2BDC or amTb-NH2BDC loaded paper-based microsensors are constructed for real-time and sensitive detection of 2,6-DPA and coupled with a smartphone-assisted visual portable device.

Abstract
Development of the portable device is significant for sensitive and rapid detection of an anthrax biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA), existing in the B. anthracis. In this work, a novel HAp:Tb-EDTA paper-based ratiometric fluorescent sensor was obtained by a simple one-pot method for rapid and sensitive DPA detection. With the increased DPA concentration, the luminescence intensity of HAp (hydroxyapatite) remained constant, and thus applied as the stable reference signal, while the luminescence signal of Tb3+-EDTA was significantly enhanced due to the antenna effect. Therefore, the HAp:Tb-EDTA paper-based sensor was endowed with self-calibrated and ratiometric fluorescent detection performance for DPA. The proposed sensor showed excellent detection performance with a detection limit as low as 10.8 nM in the linear range of 0.5-30 μM. After combination with a smartphone, rapid visual and fluorescent detection of DPA was achieved. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to detect DPA from B. subtilis spore real samples, showing the application prospects of the paper-based sensors and opening a new horizon to develop novel paper-based point-of-care testing (POCT) devices.

Abstract
Copper ions have a very important role in human health, industrial and agricultural production. Herein, lanthanide ternary complex of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA)-Eu3+-polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a fluorescent probe was thus fabricated for highly sensitive and selective detection of copper ions. PEI itself is non-fluorescent, the PEI-Eu3+complex is also non-fluorescent, and PEI has specific recognition to copper ions due to its higher affinity ability to copper ion than other metal ions. It was found that Cu2+ ions cannot quench the characteristic fluorescence of Eu3+ in the DPA-Eu3+ system, while in the DPA-Eu3+-PEI system, Cu2+ ions can greatly quench the characteristic fluorescence of Eu3+ due to photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The luminescent and quenching mechanism was also discussed in detail. The DPA-Eu3+-PEI probe not only has high sensitivity and selectivity, but also has very rapid fluorescence response and the response time is only 1 min. A good linear relationship between the fluorescence ratios of F0/F and the concentrations of Cu2+ was obtained in the range of 0.02 ∼ 10.0 μM (R2 = 0.998), and the limit of detection (LOD) is 8.0 nM. The probe was successfully applied for the detection of Cu2+ ions in the lake and river water samples, wastewater and urine samples. This work may provide a new strategy for fabricating simple and effective fluorescence probe and a promising application for the rapid and on-site detection in environmental monitoring and biological fluids.

Abstract
Dipicolinic acid (DPA) is a unique biomarker of Bacillus anthracis. Development of a simple, fast, sensitive and timely DPA detection method is of great importance and interest for preventing mass disease outbreaks and treatment of anthrax. In this work, a novel lanthanide-doped fluorescence probe was constructed by coordination of Eu3+ with bifunctional UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2 MOFs materials for efficient monitoring DPA. UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2 MOFs were prepared using Zr4+ as a metal node, 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4BTC) and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) as bridging ligand through a simple one-pot synthesis method. By virtue their abundant carboxyl groups, UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2 can readily grasp Eu3+ to form UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2/Eu with coordinated water molecules at Eu sites. Upon interaction with DPA molecules, the coordinated H2O molecules were replaced by DPA molecules which transfer energy to Eu3+ in UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2/Eu and sensitize Eu3+ luminescence. Meanwhile, DPA has a characteristic absorption band at 270 nm, which overlapped with the excitation spectrum of NH2-BDC, allowing the fluorescence of UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2/Eu at 453 nm to be greatly quenched by DPA through inner filter effect (IFE). Therefore, the rationally designed UiO-66-(COOH)2-NH2/Eu complex not only exhibits strong hydrophilicity and high dispersion, but also serves as ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform for monitoring DPA concentration. This sensing platform showed a satisfactory linear relationship from 0.2 μM to 40 μM with a limit of detection of 25.0 nM and a noticeable fluorescence color change from blue to red, holding a great promise in practical applications.

Abstract
Detection of anthrax biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA) is of great importance upon the crisis of bioterrorism. Development of fluorescent materials for DPA detection, particularly one that fully depends on single luminescent response, faces the challenge of being susceptible to interferences. The accompanying accuracy problems offer great opportunities for the establishment of more reliable ratiometric analysis method. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent probe based on terbium functionalized graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (Tb-g-C3N4NS) is attempted for quantitative detection of DPA to address the distinct function of g-C3N4NS as both carrier and reference fluorophore, which is a so-far unexplored option in fluorescent detection approaches. We achieve the incorporation of Tb3+ into framework of g-C3N4NS by using a simple synthetic strategy comprised of thermal pyrolysis and ultrasonic exfoliation. Combining the reference signal over g-C3N4NS at 440 nm (I440) with the response signal of Tb3+ at 546 nm (I546), concentration of DPA can be easily calculated via its linear correlation with the intensity ratio (I546/I440), giving a precise measurement towards DPA with a detection limit as low as 9.9 nM. Besides enabling an excellent self-calibrating detection of DPA, this work also inspires broader use of g-C3N4NS for relevant process.

Abstract
Rare earth (RE) complexes have found a variety of applications in materials science and biomedicine because of their unique luminescence properties. However, the poor stability and solubility in water of multicomponent RE assemblies significantly limit their practical applications. We rationally designed and developed a novel Eu3+/Tb3+ supramolecular assembly hybrids (Eu/Tb-SAH) by supramolecular host-guest recognition and coordination recognition with the excellent characteristics of water dispersion stability, biocompatibility and luminous properties. As anthrax spore biomarker, 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) can coordinate with Tb3+ and sensitize Tb3+, resulting in a proportional change of fluorescence intensity and lifetime on the ms timescales, thereby realizing rapid and sensitive detection of DPA in water media or actual spores. To confirm our prediction, accurate and selective detection of DPA was achieved with Eu/Tb-SAH as a nanoprobe through steady-state ratiometric fluorescence and time-resolved technology, of which the limit of detection (LOD) are 27.3 nM and 1.06 nM, respectively. This was obviously lower than the amount of anthrax spores infecting the human body (60 μM). Besides, the filter paper was used to carry out visual detection of DPA and read the corresponding data through smart phones. This work paves a new way to fabricate luminescent RE nanomaterials and provides new ideas for the design of ratiometic lifetime imaging biosensors in the meantime.
