A smart low molecular weight gelator for the triple detection of copper (II), mercury (II), and cyanide ions in water resources

Active Hydrogen Free, Z-Isomer Selective Isatin Derived "Turn on" Fluorescent Dual Anions Sensor

An efficient and anions fluorescence "on-off" sensor of 1-(prop-2-yn-1-yl)-3-(quinolin-3-ylimino)indolin-2-one (PQI) has been developed for the selective sensing of dual anions of F- and NO3- ions in aqueous medium. Active hydrogen and Lewis acidic binding sites free, Z- isomer of isatin based π-conjugated quinoline exhibited excellent sensing activity against F- and NO3- ions in UV light. The fluorescence turns on the process accomplished via the PET "on-off" mechanism. The interaction between probe molecule and anions is thought to be a non-covalent interaction of the low electron density covalently bonded N-methylene moiety of propargyl isatin (-N-CH2-) of probe molecule with F- ion and the terminal acidic proton of propargyl group of isatin (-C≡C-H) with NO3- ions. The modes of anions binding with PQI and plausible mechanisms are proposed by 1H and 13C NMR titrations. The selectivity of anions sensing may be offered by the bucked structure of the Z-isomer. The calculated association constant values for PQI and F- and NO3- are ions 2.5 × 104 M-1 and 2.2 × 103 M-1, respectively, indicating strong binding interaction between the PQI and anions. The association nature of anions and probes was analyzed by a Jobs plot and the finding indicates both F- and NO3- ions are in 1:1 complexation with PQI. The limit of detection (LOD) of the probe with F- and NO3- ions is calculated and is to be 6.91 × 10-7 M and 9.93 × 10-7 M, respectively. The proposed PQI fluorophore possesses a low limit of detection (LOD) for both F- and NO3- ions which is within the WHO prescribed detection limit.

A quinoline derivative-based supramolecular gel for fluorescence 'turn-off' detection of Fe3+and Cu2

In this research, we synthesized and constructed a novel gelator (namedQN) combining quinoline and naphthalene that self-assembled in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to form a stable supramolecular gel (namedOQN). Under UV light, gelOQNexhibited extremely bright yellow fluorescence. The gelOQNshowed excellent sensing performance for both Fe3+and Cu2+, with a fluorescence 'turn-off' detection mechanism and the lowest detection limit of 7.58 × 10-8M and 1.51 × 10-8M, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), rheological measurements, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to characterize the gelOQN. TheOQNion-responsive membrane created is an excellent fluorescent writing material.

A terpyridyl-rhodamine hybrid fluorescent probe for discriminative sensing of Hg (II) and Cu (II) in water and applications for molecular logic gate and cell imaging

Sensitive and discriminative sensing of more than one analyte with a single fluorescent probe is significant and challenging. Herein a new terpyridyl-rhodamine hybrid, namely TRH, has been rationally designed and prepared with two responsive groups in the molecular structure, which facilitate the discriminative detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions in water with detection limits of 4.9 and 53.3 nM by ratiometric fluorescence change (F595/F485) and fluorescence quenching, respectively. Investigations show that the selectivity to Hg2+ ions can be attributed to Hg2+-promoted spirolactam ring opening and further hydrolysis, followed by a through-bond energy transfer (TBET) process. The selective fluorescence quenching to Cu2+ ions probably can be ascribed to the binding Cu2+ to terpyridyl that triggers a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) process, which can also efficiently inhibit the TBET process induced by Hg2+ ions and promotes the discriminative sensing of Cu (II) and Hg (II). In addition, the fluorescent responses to Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions cover a wide pH range. Moreover, a combinatorial logic gate with the functions of NOR and INHIBIT has been fabricated by using Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions as chemical input signals, and fluorescence at 485 and 595 nm as output signals. Besides, TRH also exhibits sensitive and discriminative sensing ability to Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions by the fluorescence of rhodamine fluorophore. Significantly, based on the fluorescence signal output of rhodamine moiety, TRH can be used as a tracer for the discriminative sensing of Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions by using living cells.

Multi-response gelation based on the molecular assembly of Sudan I dye derivatives for phase selective gelators and chemosensors

Sudan I dye-based smart low molecular weight gelators with/without a perfluoroalkyl group have been successfully synthesized and characterized by rheological measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR, and NMR spectroscopies. The gelation behaviors in response to temperature, pH changes, metal cations, and UV-vis light irradiation are investigated. Compounds 1 and 2 could selectively sense the Cu²⁺ cation in the presence of other metal cations. Moreover, compound 2 with a perfluoroalkyl group shows phase selective gelation ability. This work also provides a valuable reference for exploiting photosensitive materials as chemosensors.

Synthesis and Self-assembly of Novel Nanofeather-like Fluorescent Alkyloxy-Containing Diphenyl Ether Organogelators

In this study, novel fluorescent low molecular-weight organogelators are derived from diphenyl ethers and substituted with para-alkoxy groups of different aliphatic chain lengths. The present research promotes the preparation of innovative nanofeather-like assemblies from the synthesized diphenyl ether-derived organogelators. The gelation performance of the prepared alkoxy-substituted diphenyl ethers was reported. The synthesis procedure was achieved by using a base-catalyzed reaction of hydroxyl-substituted diphenyl with various alcohols of different aliphatic chain lengths. The chemical structures of the synthesized diphenyl ether derivatives were studied by ¹H/¹³C NMR and infrared spectroscopy. Fluorescence and UV-vis absorption spectral analyses showed solvatochromism. The diphenyl ether derivatives with longer alkoxy terminal substituents showed enhanced thermoreversible gelation activity as compared to the diphenyl ether derivatives with shorter alkoxy terminal substituents. The morphological properties of the self-assembled diphenyl ethers were studied by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which showed supramolecular architectures of highly ordered nanofeathers, enforced by van der Waals interactions and π-stacks. Depending on the length of the aliphatic tail, different morphologies were detected, including nanofeathers, nanofibers, and nanosheets. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of the prepared diphenyl ether-derived organogelators were examined to confirm their possible use in various fields like drug delivery systems.

A Benzothidiazole-Based Reversible Fluorescent Probe with Excellent Performances in Selectively and Sensitively Sensing of Hg2+ in Water

The development of mercury ion selective fluorescent probe is significant because it is one of toxic heavy metals and poses great risks and hazards to human health. Herein, we develop a mercury ion-selective fluorescent probe, namely IB, based on imidazole decorated benzothiadiazole that obtained by a facile palladium catalytic C-N coupling reaction. IB exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards mercury ion in water with nearly 32-fold fluorescent enhancement. The detection limit is calculated to be 0.93 nmol/L. In addition, the sensing of mercury ion can be conducted in a wide pH scope ranging from 4.0 to 10.0. Subsequently, the mercury ion elicits fluorescence of IB solution can be quenched by the addition of cyanide anions, showing "off-on-off" fluorescence transformation with at least 5 cycles, demonstrating the reversible sensing ability of IB. Furthermore, an INHIBIT logical detector has been developed using mercury ion and cyanide anions as inputs and fluorescence of IB as output. Significantly, IB can be utilized for mercury ion detection in real water sample.

Fluorescence "Turn-Off" and Colorimetric Sensor for Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cu2+ Ions Based on a 2,5,7-Triarylimidazopyridine Scaffold

Two cyanoimidazopyridine-based sensors (SS1 and SS2) were explored for the colorimetric and fluorometric detection of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions in the semi-aqueous medium. The "turn-off" fluorescence response of both sensors to these ions was due to the restriction in internal charge transfer. Job's plot and semi-empirical calculations revealed that SS1 and SS2 complexed with Cu²⁺ ions in a 1:1 ratio and Fe^2+/3+ ions in a 2:1 ratio, respectively. The sensors were found to have high binding constant (K _a) values and low detection limit values. FMO analysis using the semi-empirical quantum mechanics method revealed the decrease in energy gap after complexation with metal ions. Sensor-coated filter paper strips were prepared and analyzed, where the color changes in the strips could be utilized for the real-time detection of Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, and Cu²⁺ ions.

Dehydroabietylamine-decorated imino-phenols: supramolecular gelation and gel phase selective detection of Fe3+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ ions under different experimental conditions

Dehydroabietylamine-linked Schiff bases 1–3 have been synthesized, characterized and employed in metal ion sensing in a sol–gel medium. The compounds have a propensity for gel formation from aqueous organic solvents.

Quantitative Hg2+ detection via forming three coordination complexes using a lysosome targeting quinoline - Fisher aldehyde fluorophore

This work describes (Z)-N-((Z)-2-(1,3,3-trimethylindolin-2ylidene)ethylidene)quinoline-8-amine (LYSO-QF), a high-performing and biocompatible dye comprised of quinoline and Fisher aldehyde moieties linked via an imine vinyl backbone with lysosome targeting ability that can be used to quantitatively detect the mercury ion (Hg²⁺) in biosystems and the natural environment. This is achieved by forming three different tetrameric, trimeric and dimeric complexes between Hg²⁺ and LYSO-QF with the limit of detection (LOD) of 11 nm. The complexes formed were analyzed with the aid of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. The concentration dependence of the Hg²⁺ complex fluorescence emission changes from grey-green to jade green and then to red as the different types of complex are formed. The favorable sensor properties of the LYSO-QF probe are demonstrated by monitoring different Hg²⁺ concentrations in buffer solutions, HeLa cells, zebrafish model samples and several different types of water sample. Experiments with Whatman paper strips demonstrate that the cost-effective LYSO-QF also has considerable potential for use in on-site Hg²⁺ detection with the naked eye.

Stimuli responsive dynamic transformations in supramolecular gels

Supramolecular gels are formed by the self-assembly of small molecules under the influence of various non-covalent interactions. As the interactions are individually weak and reversible, it is possible to perturb the gels easily, which in turn enables fine tuning of their properties. Synthetic supramolecular gels are kinetically trapped and usually do not show time variable changes in material properties after formation. However, such materials potentially become switchable when exposed to external stimuli like temperature, pH, light, enzyme, redox, and chemical analytes resulting in reconfiguration of gel matrix into a different type of network. Such transformations allow gel-to-gel transitions while the changes in the molecular aggregation result in alteration of physical and chemical properties of the gel with time. Here, we discuss various methods that have been used to achieve gel-to-gel transitions by modifying a pre-formed gel material through external perturbation. We also describe methods that allow time-dependent autonomous switching of gels into different networks enabling synthesis of next generation functional materials. Dynamic modification of gels allows construction of an array of supramolecular gels with various properties from a single material which eventually extend the limit of applications of the gels. In some cases, gel-to-gel transitions lead to materials that cannot be accessed directly. Finally, we point out the necessity and possibility of further exploration of the field.
