Abstract
Designing a working electrode is crucial for the reliable electrochemistry detection, which is applied to detect toxic and harmful substances sensitively and rapidly. Here we report the polytetrafluoroethylene decomposition-assisted electrospinning, a combination method for creating nanopore and synthesizing CeF3, to prepare the self-supporting electrode of CeF3 nanoparticles-anchored on porous carbon nanofibers (CeF3/PCNFs) for highly sensitive nitrite detection. The CeF3/PCNFs exhibits remarkable electroactivity toward nitrite detection, featuring a wide concentration range (0.5 μM-6 mM), low detection limit (10 nm) and high sensitivity (2093 μA mM-1 cm-2). It also exhibits excellent selectivity, stability and reproducibility, and powerful reliability for nitrite detection in saliva, pickles, sausages, chips, river water and tap water. This study provides a facile strategy to prepare the metal fluoride-based self-supporting electrode, which overcomes the disadvantages of chemically modified electrodes unstable and poorly reproducible, and is significant for clinical diagnosis, food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Developing an effective and convenient nitrite detection method is indispensable in food safety, environmental monitoring, clinical diagnosis of diseases, and many other areas. Herein, a dicyanoisophorone derivative, TMN-NH2 with large Stokes shift and near-infrared (NIR) emission, was proposed as a ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode probe for the rapid determination of NO2- in acidic media, showing excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. The sensing mechanism is based on the diazotization of TMN-NH2 with NO2- and subsequent diazonium salt hydrolysis to form a hydroxyl-substituted product (TMN-OH). Under the optimized conditions of reaction and detection, a new quantitative analysis method based on TMN-NH2 was established for NO2- detection, exhibiting good linear relationships to NO2- in the range of 0.5 to 15 μM with practical detection limits of 26.6 nM and 17.6 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent readout, respectively. The quantitative detection of NO2- in real samples demonstrated satisfactory recoveries and repeatability. Moreover, TMN-NH2 was successfully applied for monitoring NO2- in Escherichia coli by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
A spectrophotometric method for the quantitative determination of nitrite was developed, based on the radical nitration of indopolycarbocyanine dyes in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO). The rate of the reaction of the studied dyes with nitrite increases with the lengthening of the polymethine chain and the presence of hydrophilic sulfo groups in the side chain of the dye. TEMPO acts as a co-reagent, significantly accelerating the reaction rate and increasing the sensitivity of nitrite determination. The proposed reaction mechanism is supported by spectrophotometric and HPLC/MS studies. For Ind2 (tetramethine indocarbocyanine cationic dye), the limit of detection for nitrite is 0.50 µM within a linearity range of 1-13 µM. The developed method is sensitive, with a LOD 130 times lower than the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of nitrite in drinking water (65 μM), as specified by the WHO. The method is of low-toxicity and good selectivity, as the determination of nitrite is not significantly affected by the main components of water. The method was successfully applied for the analysis of nitrite in natural and bottled water.

Abstract
Nitrites widely exist in human life and the natural environment, but excessive contents of nitrites will result in adverse effects on the environment and human health; hence, sensitive and stable nitrite detection systems are needed. In this study, we report the synthesis of Ti3C2 nanosheets functionalized with apoferritin (ApoF)-biomimetic platinum (Pt) nanoparticle (Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2) composite materials, which were formed by using ApoF as a template and protein-inspired biomineralization. The formed nanohybrid exhibits excellent electrochemical sensing performance towards nitrite (NaNO2). Specifically, the Pt@ApoF catalyzes the conversion of nitrites into nitrates, converting the chemical signal into an electrical signal. The prepared Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2-based electrochemical NaNO2 biosensors demonstrate a wide detection range of 0.001-9 mM with a low detection limit of 0.425 μM. Additionally, the biosensors possess high selectivity and sensitivity while maintaining a relatively stable electrochemical sensing performance within 7 days, enabling the monitoring of NaNO2 in complex environments. The successful preparation of the Pt@ApoF/Ti3C2 nanohybrid materials provides a new approach for constructing efficient electrochemical biosensors, offering a simple and rapid method for detecting NaNO2 in complex environments.

Abstract
Among the existing nanosystems used in electrochemical sensing, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have attracted considerable attention owing to their intriguing chemical and physical properties such as good electrical conductivity, high electrocatalytic activity, and high surface-to-volume ratio. However, despite these useful characteristics, there are some issues due to their instability in solution that can give rise to aggregation phenomena and the use of hazardous chemicals in the most common synthetic procedures. With an aim to find a solution to these issues, recently, we prepared and characterized carbon dots (CDs), from olive solid wastes, and employed them as reducing and capping agents in photo-activated AuNP synthesis, thus creating CD-Au nanohybrids. These nanomaterials appear extremely stable in aqueous solutions at room temperature, are contemporary, and have been obtained using CDs, which are exclusively based on non-toxic elements, with an additional advantage of being generated from an otherwise waste material. In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of CD-Au nanohybrids are described, and the electrochemical experiments for hydroquinone detection are discussed. The results indicate that CD-Au acts as an efficient material for sensing hydroquinone, matching a wide range of interests in science from industrial processes to environmental pollution.

Abstract
Most of the existing electrochemical systems failed to achieve satisfactory results in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) owing to a deficiency of effective signal transduction. A new method for the electrochemical detection of AD biomarkers (amyloid-beta oligomers, Aβ1-42 oligomers) was developed based on a double amplification strategy. Titanium carbide (Ti3C2) MXene decorated by gold nanoparticles (Au-MXene) as the electrode substrate not only gave rise to the electrochemical response due to its paradoxical surface area and conspicuous charge mobility, but also provided vast numbers of binding sites for aptamers (Apt) of Aβ1-42 oligomers. Meanwhile, AuNPs were incorporated into covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which were further modified by Apt and electron mediator (toluidine blue, TB). The Apt/TB-Au@COFs composite was utilized as a label because of their improvement of the electron-hole separation efficiency and optimization of the charge-carrier utilization. The proposed electrochemical assay established highly efficient platform for the detection of Aβ1-42 oligomers with a linear range from 0.01 pg mL-1 to 180 pg mL-1 and an ultralow detection limit of 4.27 fg mL-1 (S/N = 3). This biosensing platform had potential applications in molecular diagnostics of AD serum samples.

Abstract
This study proposes the fabrication of a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for label-free detection of EpCAM antigen. MXenes, novel 2D materials have become popular owing to their unique electrochemical properties. Unlike conventional immunosensors, which are unable to detect the carcinoma at primary stage and also time consuming, the use of highly conducting MXene provides a label-free and highly sensitive immunosensor. Herein, we develop a unique immunosensor, which is based on the in-situ growth of 2D-TiO2 onto the novel 2D-Ti3C2Tx sheets by hydrothermal treatment. The 2D/2D TiO2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid provides a platform having a large effective surface area, and more number of electrochemically active sites to enhance the electron transfer rate through the redox probe. The designed sensing platform, BSA/anti-EpCAM/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx@ITO shows a broad linear range (1 ag/mL to 10 ng/mL) with high sensitivity (6.661 µA ag-1 mL cm-2), and low detection limit (0.7 ag/mL) for EpCAM antigen detection under optimized conditions. The proposed immunosensor possesses good reproducibility, long-term stability, and outstanding selectivity and specificity. Moreover, the clinical applicability of the novel immunosensor is tested in spiked human serum showing good recovery.

Abstract
Nitrite contamination in food, water, and environmental samples poses a substantial health hazard, owing to its capacity for transformation into carcinogenic compounds. Given the profound ecological and physiological implications, precise and highly sensitive surveillance of nitrite has emerged as an imperative area of concern, addressing the substantial detrimental impact that it can have on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The novel electroactive polyaniline-graphene oxide composite, incorporating hexagonal zirconium phosphate discs (PGZrP), was systematically engineered as a foundation for an advanced electrochemical sensor, enabling precise nitrite detection in diverse aqueous and biological matrices. At a specific potential peak of +0.85 V, observed within a pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution, the PGZrP-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic proficiency in the sensing nitrite ions (NO2-), surpassing the performance of alternative electrode configurations, including the zirconium phosphate-modified GCE (ZrP/GCE), graphene oxide-modified GCE (GO/GCE), polyaniline-graphene oxide-modified GCE (PG/GCE), and the unmodified bare glassy carbon electrode. The constructed sensor demonstrated an impressive limit of detection at 80 nM along with a broad and linear detection range spanning from 124 nM to 40 mM. The synergistic effect created by the close contact between ZrP and PG, which resulted in a well-enhanced electrochemical sensing capability, was responsible for this exceptional activity. The developed sensor exhibited an enhanced electrochemical performance characterized by an extended operational range, a heightened detection threshold, and exceptional sensitivity. The PGZrP/GCE sensor, as fabricated, consistently demonstrated commendable operational stability, robust reproducibility, and remarkable repeatability in its capacity for nitrite detection. Furthermore, its successful application in the precise quantification of nitrite levels within environmental water samples and blood specimens showcased an impressive recovery rate, establishing it as a promising tool for diverse analytical applications. These findings indicate the promising potential of the PGZrP composite for integration into electrochemical devices designed to deliver rapid response times, heightened sensitivity, and sustained stability, thereby placing it as a potential candidate for the production of cutting-edge sensors, particularly those employed for the precise recognition of nitrite in aquatic and biological specimens.

Abstract
A photo-driven self-powered aptasensor was constructed based on a matching capacitor and the ZnIn2S4/Ti3C2 heterojunction as the photoanode and Cu2O as the photocathode in a dual-photoelectrode sensing matrix for multiple signal amplification for the ultrasensitive detection of microcystin-RR (MC-RR). The introduction of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets on the photoanode surface can not only accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, thus enhancing the output signal of the photo-driven self-powered system, but also provide a larger specific surface area for the immobilization of the bio-recognition unit aptamer. More importantly, for a portable and miniaturized device, a micro-workstation with the size of a universal serial bus (USB) disk and a novel short-circuit current access was proposed to capture the instantaneous output electrical signal for real-time data tracking. In such a way, a sensitivity of 2.7 mA pM-1 was achieved when the matching capacitor was integrated into the self-powered system, which was 22 times that without a capacitor. After the interaction between MC-RR and the corresponding aptamer, a 'signal-off' detection configuration was formed via the steric hindrance effect. Therefore, such a multiple signal amplification system realized the ultrasensitive and selective determination of MC-RR successfully. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the self-powered aptasensor was 0.1 to 100 pM and the detection limit was 0.033 pM (S/N = 3). The aptasensor was applied to the detection of MC-RR in fish, exhibiting good reproducibility (≈3.88%), paving the way for detecting microcystins in real-life samples.

Abstract
Nitrite ions are being used in different forms as food preservatives acting as flavor enhancers or coloring agents for food products. However, continuous ingestion of nitrite may have severe health implications due to its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Thus, this study constructed an electrochemical assay using disposable nano-sensor chip ZrO2@MWCNTs screen printed electrodes (SPE) for the rapid, selective, and sensitive determination of nitrite in food and water samples. As a sensing platform, the use of nanomaterials, including metal oxide nanostructures and carbon nanotubes, exhibited a superior electrocatalytic activity and conductivity. Morphological, structural, and electrochemical analyses were performed using electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). Accordingly, a wide dynamic linear range (5.0 μM to 100 μM) was obtained with a limit of detection of 0.94 μM by the chronoamperometric technique. In addition, the sensor's selectivity was tested when several non-target species were exposed to the sensor chips while no obvious electrochemical signals were generated when the nitrite ions were not present. Eventually, real food and water sample analysis was conducted, and a high recovery was achieved.

Effective photodegradation of antibiotics by guest-host synergy between photosensitizer and bismuth vanadate: Underlying mechanism and toxicity assessment. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 325:138362. Abstract
The removal of antibiotics in wastewater has attracted increasing attention. Herein, a superior photosensitized photocatalytic system was developed with acetophenone (ACP) as the guest photosensitizer, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) as the host catalyst and poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) as the bridging complex, and used for the removal of sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in water under simulated visible light (λ > 420 nm). The obtained ACP-PDDA-BiVO4 nanoplates attained a removal efficiency of 88.9%-98.2% for SMR, SDZ and SMZ after 60 min reaction and achieved kinetic rate constant approximately 10, 4.7 and 13 times of BiVO4, PDDA-BiVO4 and ACP-BiVO4, respectively, for SMZ degradation. In the guest-host photocatalytic system, ACP photosensitizer was found to have a great superiority in enhancing the light absorption, promoting the surface charge separation-transfer and efficient generation of holes (h+) and superoxide radical (·O2-), greatly contributing to the photoactivity. The SMZ degradation pathways were proposed based on the identified degradation intermediates, involving three main pathways of rearrangement, desulfonation and oxidation. The toxicity of intermediates was evaluated and the results demonstrated that the overall toxicity was reduced compared with parent SMZ. This catalyst maintained 92% photocatalytic oxidation performance after five cyclic experiments and displayed a co-photodegradation ability to others antibiotics (e.g., roxithromycin, ciprofloxacin et al.) in effluent water. Therefore, this work provides a facile photosensitized strategy for developing guest-host photocatalysts, which enabling the simultaneous antibiotics removal and effectively reduce the ecological risks in wastewater.

Abstract
Sensitive determination of ofloxacin (OFL) is very essential for human health and environmental protection. Here, a novel composite of gold nanoparticles(nAu)@MXene(Ti3C2Tx)/poly-p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid (PABSA) was fabricated on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used to sensitively determine OFL. The results of experiments showed that the obtained nAu@Ti3C2Tx/PABSA/GCE electrode could be used as an electrochemical sensor to directly detect ofloxacin (OFL) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimal conditions, the proposed electrode displayed a broader linear range and a lower detection limit (LOD) for OFL determination when it was compared to those similar sensors. The linear range was from 5.0 × 10-8 to 5.0 × 10-4 mol/L and the LOD was 3.7 × 10-8 mol/L (S/N = 3). The nAu@Ti3C2Tx/PABSA/GCE electrode also showed good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility. Finally, the proposed electrode was used to detect OFL in commercial samples by the standard addition method. The obtained recovery was from 97.3% and 105.7% showing its potential applications in actual sample analysis.

Abstract
Nanoparticle-functionalized transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have attracted extensive attention in electrochemical detection owing to their excellent catalytic performance. However, the mainstream synthetic routes rely on the batch method requiring strict experimental conditions, generally leading to low yield and poor size tunability of particles. Herein, we report a high-throughput and continuous microfluidic platform for preparing a functional MXene (Ti3C2Tx) with bimetallic nanoparticles (Pt-Pd NPs) at room temperature. Two 3D micromixers with helical elements were integrated into the microfluidic platform to enhance the secondary flow for promoting transport and reaction in the synthesis process. The rapid mixing and strong vortices in these 3D micromixers prevent aggregation of NPs in the synthesis process, enabling a homogeneous distribution of Pt-Pd NPs. In this study, Pt-Pd NPs loaded on the MXene nanosheets were synthesized under various hydrodynamic conditions of 1-15 mL min-1 with controlled sizes, densities, and compositions. The mean size of Pt-Pd NPs could be readily controlled within the range 2.4-9.3 nm with high production rates up to 13 mg min-1. In addition, synthetic and electrochemical parameters were separately optimized to improve the electrochemical performance of Ti3C2Tx/Pt-Pd. Finally, the optimized Ti3C2Tx/Pt-Pd was used for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) detection and shows excellent electrocatalytic activity. The electrode modified with Ti3C2Tx/Pt-Pd here presents a wide detection range for H2O2 from 1 to 12 000 μM with a limit of detection down to 0.3 μM and a sensitivity up to 300 μA mM-1 cm-2, superior to those prepared in the traditional batch method. The proposed microfluidic approach could greatly enhance the electrochemical performance of Ti3C2Tx/Pt-Pd, and sheds new light on the large-scale production and catalytic application of the functional nanocomposites.

Abstract
Due to wide usage as nitrogen fertilizer in agriculture and food additive in industry, nitrite, as one of inorganic environmental pollutants, could cause detrimental effects to the ecological environment. Therefore, accurate, sensitive and rapid detection of nitrite is necessary. In this work, binary hybrid polyaniline-MnO2 organic-inorganic nanocomposite is prepared chemically and characterized via X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Polyaniline-MnO2 organic-inorganic nanocomposite serves as excellent electrode modifier for electrochemical sensing of nitrite by two modes of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, achieving broad linear ranges and low limits of detection for both methods. Moreover, the organic-inorganic nanocomposite displays satisfactory sensing performance in real water sample analysis. Amine and imino groups of polyaniline contribute to the better adsorption behavior of nitrite onto the nanocomposite, which improves the nanocomposite's sensing performance. In summary, the synergistic effects between polyaniline and MnO2 is taken advantaged in the nanocomposite for effective electrochemical sensor development.

Abstract
Gas therapy has been proven to be a promising and advantageous treatment option for cancers. Studies have shown that nitric oxide (NO) is one of the smallest structurally significant gas molecules with great potential to suppress cancer. However, there is controversy and concern about its use as it exhibits the opposite physiological effects based on its levels in the tumor. Therefore, the anti-cancer mechanism of NO is the key to cancer treatment, and rationally designed NO delivery systems are crucial to the success of NO biomedical applications. This review summarizes the endogenous production of NO, its physiological mechanisms of action, the application of NO in cancer treatment, and nano-delivery systems for delivering NO donors. Moreover, it briefly reviews challenges in delivering NO from different nanoparticles and the issues associated with its combination treatment strategies. The advantages and challenges of various NO delivery platforms are recapitulated for possible transformation into clinical applications.

Abstract
Nitrite is one of the abundant toxic components existing in the environment and is likely to have a great potential to affect human health badly. For that reason, it has become crucial to build a reliable nitrite detection method. In recent years, several nitrite monitoring systems have been proposed. Compared with traditional analytical strategies, the electrochemical approach has a bunch of advantages, including low cost, rapid response, easy operation, simplicity, etc. In this case, noble metal nanomaterials, especially Au-based nanomaterials, have attracted attention in electrode modification because of higher catalytic activity, facile mass transfer, and broad active area for determining nitrite. This review is based on the state-of-the-art, which includes a variety of nanomaterials that have been coupled with AuNPs for the creation of nanocomposites, and the construction as well as development of electrochemical sensors for nitrite detection over the last few years (2016-2022). A background study on synthesizing different morphological AuNPs and nanocomposites has also been introduced. The fabrication methods and sensing capabilities of modified electrodes are given special consideration.

Abstract
Two-dimensional materials have unique properties and their better functionality has created new paradigms in the field of sensing. Over the past decade, a new family of 2D materials known as MXenes has emerged as a promising material for numerous applications, including biosensing. Their metallic conductivity, rich surface chemistry, hydrophilicity, good biocompatibility, and high anchoring capacity for biomaterials make them an attractive candidate to detect a variety of analytes. Despite such notable properties, there are certain limitations associated with them. This review aims to present a detailed survey of MXene's synthesis; in particular, their superiority in the field of biosensing as compared to other 2D materials is addressed. Their low oxidative stability is still an open challenge, and recent investigations on MXene's oxidation are summarized. The hexagonal stacking network of MXenes acts as a distinctive matrix to load nanoparticles, and the embedded nanoparticles can bind an excess number of biomolecules (e.g., antibodies) thereby improving biosensor performance. We will also discuss the synthesis and corresponding performance of MXenes nanocomposites with noble metal nanoparticles and magnetic nanoparticles. Furthermore, Nb and Ti2C-based MXenes, and Ti3C2-MXene sandwich immunoassays are also reviewed in view of their importance. Different aspects and challenges associated with MXenes (from their synthesis to final applications) and the future perspectives described give new directions to fabricate novel biosensors.

Abstract
In this work, a two-dimensional (2D) MOF sheet with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) activity is prepared with Ti3C2Tx MXene as the metal precursor and the meso-tetra(4-carboxyl-phenyl) porphyrin (H2TCPP) as the organic ligand. The atomically thin 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene is utilized as the metal precursor and soft template to produce the MOF with a 2D nanosheet morphology (Ti3C2Tx-PMOF). Ti3C2Tx MXene is a kind of strong electron acceptor, which can deprotonate H2TCPP due to the high electronegativity and low work function of its terminal atoms. The deprotonated H2TCPP continues to bind with Ti atoms to form the 2D MOF sheet. The ECL activity is inherited from H2TCPP and stabilized by introducing Ag NPs. Then, we construct an ECL biosensor based on the Ag NPs/Ti3C2Tx-PMOF to detect the oral cancer overexpressed 1 (ORAOV 1). A bipedal three-dimensional DNA walker strategy is adopted to further improve the biosensor sensitivity. As expected, the biosensor exhibits sterling sensitivity and selectivity. The ECL biosensor responds linearly to ORAOV 1 concentrations in the range of 10 fM-1 nM, and the detection limit is as low as 3.3 fM (S/N = 3). It means that Ag NPs/Ti3C2Tx-PMOF is a potential material to design and construct the high-performance ECL biosensors.

Abstract
The accurate determination of nitrite in food samples is of great significance for ensuring people's health and safety. Herein, a rapid and low-cost detection method was developed for highly sensitive and selective detection of nitrite based on a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor combined with electrochemical technology and diazo reaction. In this work, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)/indium tin oxide (ITO) chip as a superior SERS substrate was obtained by electrochemical self-assembled AuNPs on ITO with the advantages of good uniformity, high reproducibility, and long-time stability. The azo compounds generated from the diazotization-coupling reaction between nitrite, 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP), and N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NED) in acid condition were further assembled on the surface of AuNP/ITO. The detection of nitrite was realized using a portable Raman spectrometer based on the significant SERS enhancement of azo compounds assembled on the AuNP/ITO chip. Many experimental conditions were optimized such as the time of electrochemical self-assembly and the concentration of HAuCl4. Under the optimal conditions, the designed SERS sensor could detect nitride in a large linear range from 1.0 × 10-6 to 1.0 × 10-3 mol L-1 with a low limit of detection of 0.33 μmol L-1. Additionally, nitrite in real samples was further analyzed with a recovery of 95.1-109.7%. Therefore, the proposed SERS method has shown potential application in the detection of nitrite in complex food samples.

Abstract
Herein, an efficient electrochemical sensing platform is proposed for selective and sensitive detection of nitrite on the basis of Cu@C@Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Cu@C@ZIF-8) heterostructure. core-shell Cu@C@ZIF-8 composite was synthesized by pyrolysis of Cu-metal-organic framework@ZIF-8 (Cu-MOF@ZIF-8) in Ar atmosphere on account of the difference of thermal stability between Cu-MOF and ZIF-8. For the sensing system of Cu@C@ZIF-8, ZIF-8 with proper pore size allows nitrite diffuse through the shell, while big molecules cannot, which ensures high selectivity of the sensor. On the other hand, Cu@C as electrocatalyst promotes the oxidation of nitrite, thereby resulting high sensitivity of the sensor. Accordingly, the Cu@C@ZIF-8 based sensor presents excellent performance for nitrite detection, which achieves a wide linear response range of 0.1-300.0μM, and a low limit of detection of 0.033μM. In addition, the Cu@C@ZIF-8 sensor possesses excellent stability and reproducibility, and was employed to quantify nitrite in sausage samples with recoveries of 95.45%-104.80%.

Abstract
Since the discovery of MXenes at Drexel University in the United States in 2011, there has been extensive research regarding various applications of MXenes including environmental remediation. MXenes with a general formula of Mn+1XnTx are a class of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides with unique chemical and physical characteristics as nanomaterials. MXenes feature characteristics such as high conductivity, hydrophobicity, and large specific surface areas that are attracting attention from researchers in many fields including environmental water engineering such as desalination and wastewater treatment as well as designing and building efficient sensors to detect hazardous pollutants in water. In this study, we review recent developments in MXene-based nanocomposites for electrochemical (bio) sensing with a particular focus on the detection of hazardous pollutants, such as organic components, pesticides, nitrite, and heavy metals. Integration of these 2D materials in electrochemical enzyme-based and affinity-based biosensors for environmental pollutants is also discussed. In addition, a summary of the key challenges and future remarks are presented. Although this field is relatively new, future research on biosensors of MXene-based nanocomposites need to exploit the remarkable properties of these 2D materials.

Abstract
A unique near-spherical ZnO nanostructure was synthesized by using mixed solvents composed of polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) and water at the volume ratio of 12:1 via the solvo-thermal method, and it possessed an ideal morphology with higher uniformity, better dispersion and small particle size. Such ZnO was employed to modify glass carbon electrode (GCE) for the construction of electrochemical sensor, i.e. near-spherical ZnO/GCE, whose nitrite sensing performance was evaluated by Chronoamperometry (CA) and Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV). In order to emphasis the superior sensing property and extensive suitability for different electrochemical detection techniques, the excellent but not the same nitrite detection performance obtained from CA and LSV was individually given in detail. This sensor based on CA showed broad linearity range of 0.6 μM-0.22 mM and 0.46 mM-5.5 mM, improved sensitivity of 0.785 μA μM-1 cm-2 accompanied with low LOD of 0.39 μM. With regard to LSV, wide linearity response of 1.9 μM-0.8 mM and 1.08 mM-5.9 mM, high sensitivity of 0.646 μA μM-1 cm-2 with LOD of 0.89 μM were obtained. Meanwhile, this sensor displayed outstanding repeatability with RSD of 2.96% (n = 4), high reproducibility with low RSD (1.72%-2.35%, n = 4), strong selectivity towards nitrite with the concentration set at one-tenth of the interfering substances, ideal stability with the peak current intensity above 90% of its initial value after storage for one month and acceptable recovery of 1.72-2.35% to actual samples including ham sausage, pickle and tap water. The near-spherical ZnO nanomaterial may be a preferred candidate for the fabrication of nitrite electrochemical sensor, which may exhibit a fascinating application in terms of food analysis and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
A new eco-friendly, rapid, and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed to determine small quantities of nitrite, based on a diazotization mechanism. In an acidic solution, sulfathiazole was first diazotized with sodium nitrite, followed by adding phosphate buffer to form a yellow-colored compound, which showed maximum absorption at 450 nm, without the need for the addition of coupling agents such as N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine. The effects of reagents amount and the optimal experimental conditions were examined by Central composite design. The simplified method presented a wide linear range of nitrite between 0.091 μg mL-1 and 1.47 μg mL-1, a sensitivity of 0.447 Abs mL µg-1, a determination coefficient of 0.998, and a low limit of detection of 0.053 μg mL-1. The simplified method was found to be comparable to the Griess method. It was evaluated for the measurements of nitrite using the accuracy profile approach. The validation procedure results established that 80% of the future results would be within the acceptability limit of 10% over the validation domain ranging from 0.174 μg mL-1 to 1.37 μg mL-1. The developed method was furtherly applied in the determination of nitrite using a developed paper-based analytical device that detected a nitrite concentration of 3 μg mL-1 which is considered by the World Health Organization to be the maximal permissible limit of nitrite in drinking water.

Abstract
Excessive nitrite amounts harm the environment and put public health at high risk. Therefore, accurate and sensitive detection of nitrite in surface and groundwater is mandatory for mitigating its adverse effects. Herein, a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor based on carbon screen-printed electrodes (CSPE) surface-modified with photochemically-made gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, ~12 nm) is proposed for nitrite detection. Scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy show that AuNPs uniformly coat the CSPE, increase its surface area, and contribute to oxidizing nitrite to much lower potential (+0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and faster rate. Under optimized differential pulse voltammetry conditions, the CSPE/AuNPs-PEI electrode responds linearly (R2 > 0.99) to nitrite within a wide concentration range (0.01–4.0 µM), showing a sensitivity of 0.85 µA·µM−1·cm−2 and limit of detection as low as 2.5 nM. The CSPE/AuNPs-PEI electrode successfully detects nitrite in tap water and canned water of olives, showing no influence of those matrices. In addition, the electrode’s response is highly reproducible since a relative standard deviation lower than 10% is observed when the same electrode is operated in five consecutive measurements or when electrodes of different fabrication batches are evaluated.

Abstract
5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is an important neurotransmitter, and its content in the human body is of great significance to human health. In this study, an l-cysteine-terminated triangular silver nanoplate loaded on a MXene (two-dimensional transition metal carbide or nitride) (Tri-AgNP/l-Cys/MXene) electrochemical sensor was used to detect 5-HT. As an electrically active amino acid with a sulfhydryl group, l-cysteine (l-Cys) forms a more stable Ag-S bond with silver nanoparticles, which can selectively substitute trisodium citrate (TSC) in TSC-capped triangular silver nanoplates (Tri-Ag-NP/TSC). Due to the good conductivity, biocompatibility, and large surface area, MXenes provide a good platform for loading Tri-AgNP/l-Cys. Under optimized conditions, the concentration range for detecting 5-HT with the sensor is 0.5-150 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.08 μM (S/N = 3). For detecting 5-HT in actual serum samples, the sensor also showed a good recovery rate (95.38-102.3%), and the relative standard deviation was 2.2-3.4%.

Abstract
It is well-known that platinum (Pt) is still the preferred material of anode catalyst in ethanol oxidation, however, the prohibitive high cost and CO poisoning of Pt metal impede the commercialization of fuel cells. Therefore, improving the utilization rate of catalysts and reduce the cost of catalyst become one of the most concerned focus in the construction of fuel cells. In this work, the Pt-based catalysts are synthesized by using different content of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) modified-Ti3C2Tx support, and the dispersion regulation function of SDS modified-Ti3C2Tx supported on Pt nanoparticles is investigated. The structure, composition and morphology of different catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM, respectively. It is found that the Pt nanoparticles in pure Ti3C2Tx surface are serious aggregated and show poor dispersion, whereas the Pt nanoparticles in SDS modified-Ti3C2Tx have a better dispersion. The electrochemical results revealed that SDS modified-Ti3C2Tx supported Pt nanoparticles has higher electrocatalytic activity and stability in both acidic and alkaline ethanol oxidation when the dosage of SDS increases to 100 mg. These findings indicate that the SDS-Ti3C2Tx/Pt catalysts show a promising future of potential applications in fuel cells with modification of Ti3C2Tx support.

Abstract
The present study introduces a novel nanocomposite based on reduced graphene oxide, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots, and palladium and silver nanoparticles (rGO/NGQD/AgPd) as an electrocatalyst toward nitrite oxidation reaction. Metal nanoparticles were prepared via a green one-pot photochemical reduction procedure utilizing UV light and NGQD simultaneously as a reducing and directing agent. Formation of the nanocomposite was thoroughly demonstrated by the FT-IR, XRD, Raman, XPS, FE-SEM, and TEM characterization tests. Various electrochemical tests evaluated the efficiency of the prepared sensing platform on the surface of a gold working electrode. Sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) were calculated to be 0.854 μA.μM-1.cm-2 and 0.052 μM, respectively, from the chronoamperometry data. Finally, the proposed sensor was successfully applied for the determination of nitrite ions in river and mineral water samples as natural water sources.

Abstract
In this paper, a new nanocomposite AuNPs/MXene/ERGO was prepared for sensitive electrochemical detection of nitrite. The nanocomposite was prepared by a facile one-step electrodeposition, HAuCl4, GO and MXene mixed in PBS solution with the applied potential of -1.4 V for 600 s. The modified material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical behavior of nitrite at the modified electrode was performed by CV and chronoamperometry. The AuNPs/MXene/ERGO/GCE showed a well-defined oxidation peak for nitrite at +0.83 V (Vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (pH 7). The amperometric responses indicated the sensor had linear ranges of 0.5 to 80 μM and 80 to 780 μM with the LOD (0.15 μM and 0.015 μM) and sensitivity (340.14 and 977.89 μA mM-1 cm-2), respectively. Moreover, the fabricated sensor also showed good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability with satisfactory recoveries for a real sample. We also propose the work that needs to be done in the future for material improvements in the conclusion.

Ti 3C 2 MXene mediated Prussian blue in situ hybridization and electrochemical signal amplification for the detection of exosomes. Talanta 2021; 224:121879. Abstract
Exosomes carrying abundant information have aroused great interest as effective biomarkers in liquid biopsy and are therefore ideal candidates for the early diagnosis of cancer and treatment monitoring. Herein, we developed a sensitive electrochemical biosensor using in situ generation of Fe₄[Fe(CN)6]₃ (Prussian Blue) on the surface of Ti3C2 MXene (two-dimensional transition-metal carbides) as hybrid nanoprobes (PB-MXene) for the detection of exosomes and their surface protein. A CD63 aptamer-modified poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM)-Au NP electrode interface was fabricated that can specifically bind with CD63 protein on the exosomes derived from OVCAR cells. In addition, the CD63-modified Ti3C2 MXene was used as a nanocarrier to accommodate numerous aptamers and was adsorbed on the exosomes. The Ti3C2 MXene can realize the in situ generation and high-efficiency loading of PB and further amplify the electrochemical signal at a low potential, thus avoiding the interference of the electrochemical active species. The dual amplification effect enables highly selective and sensitive electrochemical detection of exosomes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 229 particles μL-1 with a linear range from 5 × 102 particles μL-1 to 5 × 105 particles μL-1. An electrochemical biosensor can detect exosomes secreted by various cancer cells such as HeLa, OVCAR and BT474, and shows a high specificity even in serum samples, thus demonstrating its great potential in the application of clinical diagnostics. This proposed electrochemical biosensor provides a facile and efficient tool for the early diagnosis of cancers.

Abstract
A simple, fast and sensitive method for the detection of luteolin is proposed based on the chitosan/reduced graphene oxide aerogel with dispersed ZrO2 nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrode (ZrO2/CS/rGOA-GCE) as an electrochemical sensor. The ZrO2/CS/rGOA composite was prepared by one pot synthesis from a mixture of GO, CS and zirconyl chloride octahydrate, and subsequently be freeze-dried. Scanning electron microscope images showed a typical thin, wrinkled and fluctuant morphology of graphene nanosheets and the polymerized CS and ZrO2 nanoparticles deposited on the surface of rGOA. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were used to measure the electrochemical response of ZrO2/CS/rGOA composite-based biosensor towards luteolin at the working potential window (-0.8-0.8 V). The improved performance of this biosensor was attributed to efficient electron transfer and large surface area of 3D rGOA, and high specific activity of Zr towards adjacent hydroxyl groups. Under optimized conditions, the analytical performance of this method towards luteolin was investigated with a detection limit of 1 nM and a linear range from 5 nM to 1000 nM.. Finally, the ZrO2/CS/rGOA-GCE electrochemical method coupled with solid phase extraction was used for the detection of luteolin in real samples. Recoveries of spiked samples with different concentrations were in the range 78.6-103.3% with a relative RSD lower than 12.0%. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of the preparation of the ZrO2 nanoparticles and chitosan doped graphene aerogel modified electrode. The electrode was employed for the detection of luteolin coupled with the solid-phase extraction technique.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor was fabricated utilizing ionic liquids possessing cations with long alkyl chains such as trimethyl octadecylammonium and behenyl trimethylammonium and ascorbate anion. The ionic liquids were drop-coated onto the electrode. Thin modifying layers were prepared. Cyclic voltammetric investigations revealed electrostatic interactions between the electrochemical probes and the modified surface, proving that a positive charge was established at the film surface. Hence, negatively charged species such as nitrite can be pre-concentrated on the surface of presented modified electrodes. The fabricated electrodes have been used as a voltammetric sensor for nitrite. Due to the electrostatic accumulation properties of long alkyl cation, the assay exhibits a remarkable improvement in the voltammetric response toward nitrite oxidation. The influence of pH on the electrode response was thoroughly investigated, and the mechanism of the electrode was established. The developed sensor showed a linear electrochemical response in the range 1.0–50 μM with a detection limit of 0.1 μM. The electrode revealed good storage stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability. The determination of nitrite performed in curing salts brought satisfactory results. ![]()
