Photophysical Properties of BODIPY Derivatives for the Implementation of Organic Solar Cells: A Computational Approach

Solar cells based on organic compounds are a proven emergent alternative to conventional electrical energy generation. Here, we provide a computational study of power conversion efficiency optimization of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives by means of their associated open-circuit voltage, short-circuit density, and fill factor. In doing so, we compute for the derivatives' geometrical structures, energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, light collection efficiencies, and exciton binding energies via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. We fully characterize four D-π-A (BODIPY) molecular systems of high efficiency and improved J _sc that are well suited for integration into bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells as electron-donor materials in the active layer. Our results are twofold: we found that molecular complexes with a structural isoxazoline ring exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), a useful result for improving the BHJ current, and, on the other hand, by considering the molecular systems as electron-acceptor materials, with P3HT as the electron donor in the active layer, we found a high PCE compound favorability with a pyrrolidine ring in its structure, in contrast to the molecular systems built with an isoxazoline ring. The theoretical characterization of the electronic properties of the BODIPY derivatives provided here, computed with a combination of ab initio methods and quantum models, can be readily applied to other sets of molecular complexes to hierarchize optimal power conversion efficiency.

Construction of coumarin-fused pyrido[2,3-b]porphyrins through a trichloroacetic acid-accelerated domino approach

A one-pot strategy for coumarin-fused Ni(ii) and Cu(ii) pyrido[2,3-b]porphyrins is developed. These porphyrinoids displayed a significant red-shift in their UV-Vis spectra.

Synthesis of near-infrared absorbing and fluorescing thiophene-fused BODIPY dyes with strong electron-donating groups and their application in dye-sensitised solar cells

Thiophene-fused BODIPY dyes with two diethylaminophenyl groups as strong donors demonstrated near-infrared (NIR) absorption (λ_max: 783–812 nm, ε: 119 500–145 900) and fluorescence (F_max: 862–916 nm, Φ_f: 0.02–0.12) in dichloromethane.

Synthesis of Novel C-2- or C-15-Labeled BODIPY-Estrone Conjugates

Novel BODIPY-estrone conjugates were synthesized via Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). Estrone-alkynes or an estrone-azide as starting compounds were synthesized via Michael addition or Sonogashira reaction as key steps. Fluorescent dyes based on BODIPY-core were provided by azide or alkyne functional groups. Fluorescent labeling of estrone was efficiently achieved at the C-2 or C-15 position. The newly-elaborated coupling procedures might have a broad applicability in the synthesis of fluorescent-labeled estrone conjugates suitable for biological assays.

Synthesis and evaluation of a [18F]BODIPY-labeled caspase-inhibitor

BODIPYs (boron dipyrromethenes) are fluorescent dyes which show high stability and quantum yields. They feature the possibility of selective ¹⁸F-fluorination at the boron-core. Attached to a bioactive molecule and labeled with [¹⁸F]fluorine, the resulting compounds are promising tracers for multimodal imaging in vivo and can be used for PET and fluorescence imaging. A BODIPY containing a phenyl and a hydroxy substituent on boron was synthesized and characterized. Fluorinated and hydroxy substituted dyes were coupled to an isatin-based caspase inhibitor via cycloaddition and the resulting compounds were evaluated in vitro in caspase inhibition assays. The metabolic stability and the formed metabolites were investigated by incubation with mouse liver microsomes and LC-MS analysis. Subsequently the fluorophores were labeled with [¹⁸F]fluorine and an in vivo biodistribution study using dynamic PET was performed.

Near-infrared emitting fluorescent BODIPY nanovesicles for in vivo molecular imaging and drug delivery

Near-infrared fluorescent nanovesicles were prepared by self-assembly of block copolymer hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) boron-dipyrromethenes in aqueous solution. The fluorescence enhancement induced by dissociation of nanovesicles could be used as a smart imaging and diagnostic tool. This nanovesicle could encapsulate the antitumor drug, and provide a powerful platform for imaging-guided tumor-specific drug delivery and therapy.

Microwave-assisted reduction of F-BODIPYs and dipyrrins to generate dipyrromethanes

The reduction of BODIPYs and dipyrrins to dipyrromethanes, via a reaction involving ethylene glycol and sodium methoxide, is reported. When benzyl alcohol is used in place of ethylene glycol, the addition of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to the reaction mixture after microwave irradiation results in the production of 1-benzylidene-2-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)hydrazone, indicating concomitant production of aldehyde alongside the dipyrromethane.

Synthesis and transformations of 5-chloro-2,2'-dipyrrins and their boron complexes, 8-chloro-BODIPYs

Symmetric dipyrrylketones 1 a,b were synthesized in two steps from the corresponding α-free pyrroles, by reaction with thiophosgene followed by oxidative hydrolysis under basic conditions. The dipyrrylketones produced the corresponding 5-chloro-dipyrrinium salts or 5-ethoxy-dipyrrins on reaction with phosgene or Meerwein's salt, respectively. Boron complexation of the dipyrrins afforded the corresponding 8-functionalized BODIPYs (borondipyrromethenes) in high yields. The 5-chloro-dipyrrinium salts reacted with methoxide or ethoxide ions to produce monopyrrole esters, presumably via a 5,5-dialkoxy-dipyrromethane intermediate. In contrast, 8-chloro-BODIPYs underwent a variety of nucleophilic substitutions of the chloro group in the presence of alkoxide ions, Grignard reagents, and thiols. In the presence of excess alkoxide or Grignard reagent, at room temperature or above, substitution at the boron center also occurred. The 8-chloro-BODIPY was a particularly useful reagent for the preparation of 8-aryl-, 8-alkyl-, and 8-vinyl-substituted BODIPYs in very high yields, using Pd(0) -catalyzed Stille cross-coupling reactions. The X-ray structures of eleven BODIPYs and two pyrroles are presented, and the spectroscopic properties of the synthesized BODIPYs are discussed.

Structural modification strategies for the rational design of red/NIR region BODIPYs

The structure–property relationships of red/NIR region BODIPY dyes is analyzed, so that trends in their photophysical properties can be readily compared.

BODIPY-thiophene copolymers as p-channel semiconductors for organic thin-film transistors

The synthesis and physicochemical properties of a new class of BODIPY-based donor-acceptor π-conjugated polymers are presented. Solution-processed top-gate/bottom-contact (TG-BC) thin-film transistors on flexible plastic substrates exhibit air-stable p-channel activities with charge carrier mobilities as high as 0.17 cm(2) /V·s and current on/off ratios of 10(5) -10(6) , the highest reported to date for a BODIPY-based semiconductor. The results shown here indicate a significant charge-transport improvement (>10000×) in BODIPY-based polymeric semiconductors, demonstrating its potential in future organic optoelectronic applications.

Synthetic transformations of porphyrins – Advances 2002-2004

Contemporary methods for the modification of porphyrins are presented. In association with the Third International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP-3) a survey of current method developments and reactivity studies is made. The review focuses on synthetic transformations of porphyrins currently in use for various applications and on functional group transformations. A brief survey of important developments covers selectively the literature from late 2001 to early 2004.

Electron vs energy transfer in arrays featuring two Bodipy chromophores axially bound to a Sn(IV) porphyrin via a phenolate or benzoate bridge

In this report we describe the synthesis of multichromophore arrays consisting of two Bodipy units axially bound to a Sn(IV) porphyrin center either via a phenolate (3) or via a carboxylate (6) functionality. Absorption spectra and electrochemical studies show that the Bodipy and porphyrin chromophores interact weakly in the ground state. However, steady-state emission and excitation spectra at room temperature reveal that fluorescence from both the Bodipy and the porphyrin of 3 are strongly quenched suggesting that, in the excited state, energy and/or electron transfer might occur. Indeed, as transient absorption experiments show, selective excitation of Bodipy in 3 results in a rapid decay (τ ≈ 2 ps) of the Bodipy-based singlet excited state and a concomitant rise of a charge-separated state evolving from the porphyrin-based singlet excited state. In contrast, room-temperature emission studies on 6 show strong quenching of the Bodipy-based fluorescence leading to sensitized emission from the porphyrin moiety due to a transduction of the singlet excited state energy from Bodipy to the porphyrin. Emission experiments at 77 K in frozen toluene reveal that the room-temperature electron transfer pathway observed in 3 is suppressed. Instead, Bodipy excitation in 3 and 6 results in population of the first singlet excited state of the porphyrin chromophore. Subsequently, intersystem crossing leads to the porphyrin-based triplet excited state.

Multi-transduction of molecular recognition events in metalloporphyrin layers

Besides the design and synthesis of appropriate molecular recognition systems, the development of chemical sensors requires a careful selection of the transducer to allow conversion of the chemical interaction into an exploitable electric signal. Metalloporphyrins, which are characterized by manifold of interactions of different strength and selectivity, provide a good example of the complexity of such an issue. In this paper, an example of the different ways to capture interactions occurring in a metalloporphyrin layer is presented. In particular, the properties of mass (quartz microbalance) and surface potential transducers (field effect transistor) are illustrated. Results suggest that field effect transistors are more suitable to preserve the interactions magnitude scale than to maintain the original selectivity of the molecular recognition system.

Dependence of electrochemical and electrogenerated chemiluminescence properties on the structure of BODIPY dyes. Unusually large separation between sequential electron transfers

Electrochemistry and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of selected substituted BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) dyes have been studied. The location and nature of substituents on positions 1-8 are important in predicting the behavior, and especially the stability, of the radical ions formed on electron transfer. Dyes with unsubstituted positions 2, 6, and 8 show a kinetic contribution to both oxidation and reduction. Dyes with only unsubstituted positions 2 and 6 and a substituted 8 position show chemically reversible reduction but irreversible oxidation. Unsubstituted positions 2 and 6 tend to show dimer formation on oxidation. Completely substituted dyes show nernstian oxidation and reduction. Oxidation and reduction studies of simple BODIPY dyes show an unusually large separation between the first and second reduction peaks and also the first and second oxidation peaks, of about 1.1 V, which is very different from that observed for polycyclic hydrocarbons and other heteroaromatic compounds, where the spacing is usually about 0.5 V. Electronic structure calculations confirmed this behavior, and this effect is attributed to a greater electronic energy required to withdraw or add a second electron and a lower relative solvation energy for the dianion or dication compared with those of the polycyclic hydrocarbons. ECL was generated for all compounds either by annihilation or by using a co-reactant.

A facile synthesis of deuteroporphyrins derivatives under ultrasound irradiation

A facile, efficient and general method for preparing deuteroporphyrin derivatives by using concentrated H(2)SO(4) and alcohol under ultrasound irradiation has been developed. A series of new deuteroporphyrin derivatives bearing different propionic ester groups have been synthesized in good yields starting from readily accessible deuterohemin. The characterization of these compounds confirms the synthetic methodology. Compared with conventional methods, the main advantages of the present procedure are shorter reaction time and higher yields.

Conformationally restricted aza-BODIPY: highly fluorescent, stable near-infrared absorbing dyes

Novel NIR fluorescent, conformational restricted aza-dipyrromethene boron difluoride (aza-BODIPY) dyes were prepared by an efficient process. Such conformational restricted aza-BODIPY dyes possess intense absorption, strong fluorescence, high chemical and photostability. Additionally, the sharp fluorescence of non-amine containing aza-BODIPY dyes is insensitive to solvent polarity.
