Abstract
Strategic design for the construction of contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers represents a daunting challenge in synthetic organic chemistry. Herein, we report a combined experimental and computational investigation aimed at developing catalytic aerobic carbooxygenation, involving the intramolecular addition of tertiary radicals to geminally disubstituted alkenes, followed by aerobic oxygenation. This reaction provides a straightforward route to various α,α,β,β-tetrasubstituted γ-lactones, which can be readily transformed into hexasubstituted γ-lactones through allylation/translactonization. Computational analysis reveals that the key mechanistic foundation for achieving the developed aerobic carbooxygenation involves the design of endothermic (energetically uphill) C-C bond formation followed by exothermic (energetically downhill) oxygenation. Furthermore, we highlight a unique fluorine-induced stereoelectronic effect that stabilizes the endothermic stereodetermining transition state.

Abstract
The first regio- and stereoselective difluoroalkylthiocyanation of alkynes with BrCF2R and KSCN has been disclosed under visible light-induced copper catalysis. The copper complex photosensitizer formed in situ not only promotes the generation of CF2-alkyl radicals but also facilitates the construction of C-SCN bonds, allowing the reaction to proceed smoothly without any additional photocatalysts or radical initiators. Moreover, the challenging internal alkynes can also be transformed to deliver CF2-derived tetrasubstituted olefins with potential applications in agricultural and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
The demand for practical methods for the synthesis of novel fluoroalkyl molecules is increasing owing to their diverse applications. Our group has achieved efficient difunctionalizing fluoroalkylations of alkenes using fluorinated carboxylic anhydrides as user-friendly fluoroalkyl sources. Fluorinated diacyl peroxide, prepared in situ from carboxylic anhydrides, enables the development of novel reactions when used as a radical fluoroalkylating reagent. In this account, we aim to provide an in-depth understanding of the structure, bonding, and reactivity of fluorinated diacyl peroxides and radicals as well as their control in fluoroalkylation reactions. In the first part of this account, the physical properties and reactivity of diacyl peroxides and fluoroalkyl radicals are described. In the subsequent part, we categorize the reactions into copper-catalyzed and metal-free methods utilizing the oxidizing properties of fluorinated diacyl peroxides. We also outline examples and mechanisms.

Abstract
In contrast with unactivated alkenes, the corresponding hydrotrifluoromethylation of styrene has remained challenging due to the strong propensity of styrene for oligomerization and polymerization. On the basis of our newly developed trifluoromethylation reagent, TFSP, herein we present a general method for the hydrotrifluoromethylation of styrene under photoredox catalysis. The substrate scope was further extended to unactivated alkenes, acrylates, acrylamides, and vinyl-heteroatom-substituted alkenes. The tunability of this method was showcased via the relevant deprotonative trifluoromethylation and trifluoromethyltrifluoroethoxylation reactions.

Abstract
β-Lactam compounds play a key role in medicinal chemistry, specifically as the most important class of antibiotics. Here, we report a novel one-step approach for the synthesis of α-(trifluoromethyl)-β-lactams and related products from fluorinated olefins, anilines and CO. Utilization of an advanced palladium catalyst system with the Ruphos ligand allows for selective cycloaminocarbonylations to give diverse fluorinated β-lactams in high yields.

Abstract
In spite of only a few naturally occurring products having one or more fluorine atoms, organofluorine compounds have been widely utilized in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and functional material science fields due to the characteristic properties of the fluorine atom. Therefore, the development of new methods for the introduction of fluorine-containing functional groups has been a long-standing research topic. This article discusses our contributions to this area. The first topic is on the trifluoromethylations of C-C multiple bonds using Togni reagent based on our working hypothesis that hypervalent iodine could be activated by coordination of the carbonyl moiety to the Lewis acid catalyst. The second topic relates to asymmetric fluorofunctionalization of alkenes. A newly designed phase-transfer catalyst consisting of a carboxylate anion functioning as a phase-transfer agent and a primary hydroxyl group as a site that captures the anionic substrate was revealed to be an effective catalyst for asymmetric fluorolactonization. Inspired by the mechanistic studies of fluorolactonization, we produced a linked binaphthyl dicarboxylate catalyst, which catalyzes the 6-endo-fluorocyclization and the deprotonative fluorination of allylic amides in a highly enantioselective manner. The third topic is on C-H fluorofunctionalizations using either catalysis or photoactivation. Benzylic trifluoromethylation, which is still a rare reaction, using Togni reagent and aromatic C-H trifluoromethylation using Umemoto reagent under simple photoirradiation conditions were achieved. In addition, the Csp3-H fluorination of alkyl phthalimide derivatives is demonstrated.

Abstract
A new Cu(II)-catalyzed annulation-cyanotrifluoromethylation of 1,6-enynes with Togni's reagent and trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) has been established, enabling the direct construction of trifluoromethylated 1-indanones with an all-carbon quaternary center in good yields. This reaction was performed by using low-cost Cu(OTf)2 as the catalyst and Togni's reagent as both the radical initiator and a CF3 source, providing an efficient protocol for building up an 1-indanone framework with wide functional group compatibility. The reaction mechanism was proposed through a radical triggered addition/5-exo-dig cyclization/oxidation/nucleophilic cascade.

Abstract
Electrophilic trifluoromethylation is at the forefront of methodologies available for the installation of the CF3 moiety to organic molecules; research in this field is largely spurred by the availability of stable and accessible trifluoromethylation reagents, of which hypervalent iodine and sulfoximine based compounds have emerged as two prominent reagent classes. Herein, we describe the facile synthesis of an electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagent which merges these two scaffolds in a novel hypervalent iodosulfoximine compound. This presents the first analogue of the well-known Togni reagents which neither compromises stability or reactivity. The electronic and physical properties of this new compound were fully explored by X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, TGA/DSC and DFT analysis. This solution stable, crystalline reagent was found to be competent in the electrophilic trifluoromethylation of a variety of nucleophiles as well as a source of the trifluoromethyl radical. Furthermore, the possibility of enantioinductive transformations could be probed with the isolation of the first enantiopure hypervalent iodine compound bearing a CF3 group, thus this new reagent scaffold offers the opportunity of structurally diversifying the reagent towards asymmetric synthesis.

Abstract
A practical and efficient method for selective intramolecular radical trifluoromethylacylation and -arylation of alkenes with inexpensive CF3SO2Na and K2S2O8 in aqueous media has been developed, respectively, affording the highly chemoselective synthesis of CF3-functionalized chroman-4-ones and chromanes in satisfactory yields. Control experiments and DFT calculations indicate that the CF3SO2Na/K2S2O8 system is capable of trifluoromethylating the substrate of alkenes without a transition metal catalyst and the oxidation of CF3SO2Na to ·CF3 by K2S2O8 is involved in the rate-determining step.

Abstract
A practical metal-free perfluoroalkylation using acid anhydrides with unique reaction mode via carbocation has been developed.
We present a strategy for metal-free, alkene difunctionalization-type, oxy- and amino-perfluoroalkylations, using perfluoro acid anhydrides as practical and user-friendly perfluoroalkyl sources. This method provides efficient access to oxy-perfluoroalkylation products via carbocation formation due to the unique reactivity between styrenes and bis(perfluoroacyl) peroxides generated in situ from perfluoro acid anhydrides. This reaction is also applicable to metal-free intramolecular amino-perfluoroalkylation of styrenes bearing a pendant amino group. Synthetic utility of the oxy-trifluoromethylation products was confirmed by demonstrating derivatization via hydrolysis, elimination, and acid-catalyzed substitution with carbon nucleophiles. The mechanism of the carbocation formation was investigated experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
Most of the polyvalent organoiodine compounds derive from iodoarenes, which are released in stoichiometric amounts in any reaction mediated by λ3- or λ5-iodanes. In parallel to the development of solid-supported reagents or reactions catalytic in iodine, a third strategy has emerged to address this issue in terms of sustainability. The atom-economy of transformations involving stoichiometric amounts of λ3- or λ5-iodanes, thus, has been improved by designing tandem reactions that allows for incorporating the aryl motif into the products through a subsequent one-pot nucleophilic addition or catalytic coupling reaction. This review summarizes the main achievements reported in this area.

Abstract
The reaction of enamine compounds with the Togni reagent in the presence of CuI afforded β-trifluoromethylated enamine intermediates, which were converted directly to biologically interesting trifluoromethylated 2H-azirines by an iodosobenzene (PhIO)-mediated intramolecular azirination in a one-pot process.

Abstract
Generally, oxy-trifluoromethylation in olefins is achieved using oxidants and transition metal catalysts. However, labile olefins remain unexplored due to their incompatibility with harsh reaction conditions. Here, unprecedented light-induced oxidant and metal-free tandem radical cyclization-trifluoromethylation and dehydrogenative oxygenation of 1,6-enynes have been achieved using a photoredox catalyst, CF3SO2Na, and phenanthrene-9,10-dione (PQ), Langlois' reagent (CF3SO2Na) and water as the oxygen source. This benign protocol allows for access to various CF3-containing C3-aryloyl/acylated benzofurans, benzothiophenes, and indoles. Moreover, the oxidized undesired products, which are inherently formed by the cleavage of the vinylic carbon and heteroatom bond, have been circumvented under oxidant free conditions. The mechanistic investigations by UV-visible and ESR spectroscopy, electrochemical studies, isotope labelling and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that light induced PQ produced a CF3 radical from CF3SO2Na. The generated CF3 radical adds to the alkene, followed by cyclization, to provide a vinylic radical that transfers an electron to PQ and generates a vinylic cation. Alternatively, electron transfer may occur from the CF3-added alkene moiety, forming a carbocation, which would undergo cationic cyclization to generate a vinylic carbocation. The subsequent addition of water to the vinylic cation, followed by the elimination of hydrogen gas, led to the formation of trifluoromethylated C3-aryloyl/acylated heterocycles.

Abstract
![]()
The chemistry of hypervalent iodine(III) compounds
has gained great interest over the past 30 years. Hypervalent iodine(III)
compounds show valuable ionic reactivity due to their high electrophilicity
but also express radical reactivity as single electron oxidants for
carbon and heteroatom radical generation. Looking at ionic chemistry,
these iodine(III) reagents can act as electrophiles to efficiently
construct C–CF3, X–CF3 (X = heteroatom),
C–Rf (Rf = perfluoroalkyl), X–Rf, C–N3, C–CN, S–CN, and C–X
bonds. In some cases, a Lewis or a Bronsted acid is necessary to increase
their electrophilicity. In these transformations, the iodine(III)
compounds react as formal “CF3+”,
“Rf+”, “N3+”, “Ar+”, “CN+”, and “X+” equivalents. On the other
hand, one electron reduction of the I(III) reagents opens the door
to the radical world, which is the topic of this Account that focuses
on radical reactivity of hypervalent iodine(III) compounds such as
the Togni reagent, Zhdankin reagent, diaryliodonium salts, aryliodonium
ylides, aryl(cyano)iodonium triflates, and aryl(perfluoroalkyl)iodonium
triflates. Radical generation starting with I(III) reagents can also
occur via thermal or light mediated homolysis of the weak hypervalent
bond in such reagents. This reactivity can be used for alkane C–H
functionalization. We will address important pioneering work in the
area but will mainly focus on studies that have been conducted by
our group over the last 5 years. We entered the field by investigating
transition metal free single electron reduction of Togni type reagents
using the readily available sodium 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl
salt (TEMPONa) as an organic one electron reductant for clean generation
of the trifluoromethyl radical and perfluoroalkyl radicals. That valuable
approach was later successfully also applied to the generation of
azidyl and aryl radicals starting with the corresponding benziodoxole
(Zhdankin reagent) and iodonium salts. In the presence of alkenes
as radical acceptors, vicinal trifluoromethyl-, azido-, and arylaminoxylation
products result via a sequence comprising radical addition to the
alkene and subsequent TEMPO trapping. Electron-rich arenes also react
with I(III) reagents via single electron transfer (SET) to give arene
radical cations, which can then engage in arylation reactions. We
also recognized that the isonitrile functionality in aryl isonitriles
is a highly efficient perfluoroalkyl radical acceptor, and reaction
of Rf-benziodoxoles (Togni type reagents) in the presence
of a radical initiator provides various perfluoroalkylated N-heterocycles (indoles, phenanthridines, quinolines, etc.).
We further found that aryliodonium ylides, previously used as carbene
precursors in metal-mediated cyclopropanation reactions, react via
SET reduction with TEMPONa to the corresponding aryl radicals. As
a drawback of all these transformations, we realized that only one
ligand of the iodine(III) reagent gets transferred to the substrate.
To further increase atom-economy of such conversions, we identified
cyano or perfluoroalkyl iodonium triflate salts as valuable reagents
for stereoselective vicinal alkyne difunctionalization, where two
ligands from the I(III) reagent are sequentially transferred to an
alkyne acceptor. Finally, we will discuss alkynyl-benziodoxoles
as radical acceptors for alkynylation reactions. Similar reactivity
was found for the Zhdankin reagent that has been successfully applied
to azidation of C-radicals, and also cyanation is possible with a
cyano I(III) reagent. To summarize, this Account focuses on the design,
development, mechanistic understanding, and synthetic application
of hypervalent iodine(III) reagents in radical chemistry.

A method
for regio- and stereoselective anti-addition of the perfluoroalkyl
and the triflate group of phenyl(perfluoroalkyl)iodonium
triflates to alkynes is presented. The radical reaction uses cheap
CuCl as a smart initiator and can be conducted in gram scale. The
perfluoroalkyltriflated products are readily further functionalized,
rendering this transformation valuable.
