A new benzimidazole-based quinazoline derivative for highly selective sequential recognition of Cu2+ and CN−

Fluorometric and colorimetric sensor for selective detection of cyanide anion by dibenzosuberenone-based dihydropyridazine in aqueous solution

A new chemosensory based on deprotonation and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) was developed to detect cyanide in food samples. Deprotonation was facilitated by increasing the acidity of the NH proton in the dibenzosuberenone-based dihydropyridazine chemosensor Pz3 with -CN substituents. Addition of cyanide to acetonitrile and aqueous acetonitrile solution (1/9) of Pz3 resulted in their significant color change from colorless to purple in visible light, accompanied by a strong red shift in the absorption spectrum. Meanwhile, the near-infrared (NIR) emission (ex. 525 nm, em. 670 nm) of Pz3- resulting from deprotonation showed fluorescence switching behavior to detect the cyanide anion. While the acidic NH protons interact with basic anions as F-, CN-, OAc- and H2PO4- in organic solution (MeCN), just CN ions interact with in aqueous organic solutions (H2O-MeCN 1/9 HEPES pH 7.4). The limit of detection of cyanide from the fluorescence spectrum is 80 nM, which is well below the value determined for drinking water by World Health Organization (WHO). The interference effect of cations and anions showed that Pz3 could play an important role in the determination of waste NaCN. In addition, Pz3 successfully carried out the selective detection of cyanide in food samples such as bitter almonds and sprouting potatoes.

Incorporation of Rhodamine into a Host Polymer via In-Situ Generated Isocyanato Group and Application for the Detection of Cu2+ Ion

A rhodamine-based fluorescent polymer P(MMA-co-RB) has been synthesized via an intermediate NCO-containing polymer generated by the Lossen rearrangement reaction. The fluorescent property of P(MMA-co-RB) with regard to metal ions, such as Cu2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Co2+, Sn2+ and Ag+, was studied by fluorescence emission spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the fluorescence intensity of P(MMA-co-RB) decreased gradually with an increase of the concentration of Cu2+ ion. Furthermore, a test strip made of P(MMA-co-RB) can be used for fast and quantitative determination of Cu2+ ion. In the presence of Cu2+ ion, the sensory tester undergoes distinct changes in fluorescence intensity and visible color.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Pyrazoline Derivative 5-(4-methylphenyl)-3-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-1-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-Pyrazole and its Application for Selective Detection of Cd2+ ion as Fluorescent Sensor

A simple fluorescent chemosensor 5-(4-methylphenyl)-3-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-1-phenyl-4, 5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (PY) has been synthesized for the detection of Cd²⁺ ion.The fluorescent probe PY shows high selectivity for Cd²⁺in the presence of othermetal ions (Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, Hg²⁺, Mn²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe³⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Al³⁺). The fluorescence intensity of the PY has been strongly quenched with increasing concentration of Cd²⁺ (0-0.9 μM)via photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The binding constant of Cd²⁺ to PY for the 1:1 complex isfound to be 5.3 × 10⁵ M^-1with a detection limit of 0.09 μM. The chemosensor was successfully applied for determination of Cd²⁺ in different water samples (tap, river, and bottled water) showing good recovery values in the range of 94.8-101.7% with RSD less than 3%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed to investigate electronic and spectral characteristics which are quite agreeable with the experimental value. The results show that the synthesized fluorescent chemosensor shows good selectivity towards Cd²⁺ and can be readily applied for the detection of Cd²⁺ in real samples including water samples.

Triphenyl-imidazole based reversible coloro/fluorimetric sensing and electrochemical removal of Cu2+ ions using capacitive deionization and molecular logic gates

A simple hydroxyl-substituted triphenyl-imidazole based receptor (HTPI) which selectively detects Cu²⁺ ion by colorimetric and fluorimetric methods was developed. HTPI detects the Cu²⁺ ions with the absorption enhancement and fluorescence quenching by the possible ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) and the chelation-enhanced quenching (CHEQ) approaches, respectively. HTPI showed high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu²⁺ ions detection over other interfering and competing metal ions. Interestingly, HTPI detects Cu²⁺ ion (LOD) at nanomolar concentrations (19 × 10^-9 M (UV-vis) & 27 × 10^-9 M (fluorescence), respectively), which is lower than the permissible level of Cu²⁺ ion reported by World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, HTPI was applied to the molecular logic gate function by using chemical inputs, and Cu²⁺ ion was potentially removed (95%) via Capacitive Deionization technique.

Quinoline based reversible fluorescent probe for Pb2+; applications in milk, bioimaging and INHIBIT molecular logic gate

We report the modular design and synthesis of an amine dangled Schiff base quinoline-morpholine conjugate (QMC) for highly selective detection of Pb²⁺ ions via fluorimetry. The sensing strategy of QMC towards Pb²⁺ ion exhibits a large blue shift with fluorescent enhancement via the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process. At the same time, QMC coordination with Pb²⁺, the CN single bond rotation between quinoline and morpholine rings and the CN isomerization process were blocked. Best of our knowledge, this is the first blue shifted turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for Pb²⁺ ion via the ICT process. Furthermore, QMC selectively detects Pb²⁺ ion without any interference with alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions, and limit of detection (LOD) downs to 13 μM, which is a permissible level of Pb²⁺ ion in drinking water reported by WHO. The 1:2 binding stoichiometry between QMC and Pb²⁺ was confirmed by fluorimetric, ¹H NMR titration, mass spectrometry, and theoretical studies. Finally, QMC was potentially applied for the sensing of Pb²⁺ ions in milk, red wine, live cells and an INHIBIT molecular logic function was constructed by using Pb²⁺ and EDTA as chemical inputs.

Rationally designed imidazole derivative as colorimetric and fluorometric sensor for selective, qualitative and quantitative cyanide ion detection in real time samples

A new imidazole derivative of 1,2-diaminoanthraquinone and fluorene-2-carboxaldehyde was designed as a sensor B2 to selectively detect the cyanide (CN^-) ion through colorimetric and/or fluorometric methods. The photochemical characterizations of sensor B2 were tested using absorption and emission spectral studies in CH₃CN-H₂O (8:2) semi-aqueous medium. An excited state proton transfer process (ESIPT) was proved by theoretical and spectral studies. The colorimetric and fluorescence detection limit of CN^- ion was found to be 5.3 × 10^-6 M and 4.11 × 10^-8 M, respectively. ¹H NMR titration, electrochemical and DFT studies were supported the removal of -NH proton from B2. In order to utilize this sensor in real-time applications, we developed a test cassette which is coated with sensor B2 detected the presence of CN^- ion in the food sample with endogenous cyanide ion.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on a Simple S-S-Bridged Dimeric Schiff Base: Selective Chromo-Fluorogenic Chemosensor for Nanomolar Detection of Fe2+ & Al3+ Ions and Its Varied Applications

A simple S-S (disulfide)-bridged dimeric Schiff base probe, L, has been designed, synthesized, and successfully characterized for the specific recognition of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions as fluorometric and colorimetric "turn-on" responses in a dimethylformamide (DMF)-H2O solvent mixture, respectively. The probe L and each metal ion bind through a 1:1 complex stoichiometry, and the plausible sensing mechanism is proposed based on the inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer process (PET). The reversible chemosensor L showed high sensitivity toward Al3+ and Fe2+ ions, which was analyzed by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques up to nanomolar detection limits, 38.26 × 10-9 and 17.54 × 10-9 M, respectively. These experimental details were advocated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The practical utility of the chemosensor L was further demonstrated in electrochemical sensing, in vitro antimicrobial activity, molecular logic gate function, and quantification of the trace amount of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions in real water samples.

Rational design and application of a fluorogenic chemodosimeter for selective detection of cyanide in an aqueous solution via excimer formation

A new quinone-benzothiazole imine based chemodosimeter (R) was rationally designed, synthesized and characterized using NMR and mass spectral techniques. The receptor colorimetrically senses cyanide in aq. HEPES buffer: DMF (2:8 v/v) solution with an instantaneous colour change from yellow to bluish green. An enhancement of fluorescence intensity at 429 nm with excimer formation is also observed after addition of cyanide to the receptor, which is accompanied with a colour change from yellow to blue under UV lamp. Nucleophilic addition of cyanide to imine C-atom inhibits intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which is responsible for the excimer formation. This chemical reaction is confirmed by ¹H NMR titration. The receptor binds with two equivalents of cyanide with a binding constant of 5.55 × 10⁴ M^-1. The limit of detection (LOD) of cyanide by the receptor is found to be as low as 69 nM, which is much lower than the acceptable limit of cyanide in drinking water as set by the WHO (1.9 μM). Electrochemical studies support the termination of ICT transition upon addition of cyanide ion. Theoretical studies substantiate experimental findings and excimer formation. The receptor fluorometrically detects cyanide present in tap water and food materials such as cassava flour, almond and potato.

An ‘‘off–on–off’’ sensor for sequential detection of Cu2+ and hydrogen sulfide based on a naphthalimide–rhodamine B derivative and its application in dual-channel cell imaging

A novel colorimetric and fluorometric sensor with unique dual-channel emission to sequentially detect Cu²⁺ and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was synthesized from naphthalimide–rhodamine B through the PET and FRET mechanism. The sensor showed a selective “off–on” fluorescence response with a 120-fold increase toward Cu²⁺, and its limits of detection were 0.26 μM and 0.17 μM for UV-vis and fluorescence measurements, respectively. In addition, 1–Cu²⁺ was an efficient “on–off” sensor to detect H₂S with detection limits of 0.40 μM (UV-vis measurement) and 0.23 μM (fluorescence measurement), respectively. Furthermore, the sensor can also be used for biological imaging of intracellular staining in living cells. Therefore, the sensor should be highly promising for the detection of low level Cu²⁺ and H₂S with great potential in many practical applications.

A colorimetric sensor for the sequential detection of Cu(2+) and CN(-) in fully aqueous media: practical performance of Cu(2+)

A new highly selective colorimetric chemosensor 1 (E)-9-(((5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)imino)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol was designed and synthesized for the sequential detection of Cu(2+) and CN(-). This sensor 1 exhibited an obvious color change from yellow to orange in the presence of Cu(2+) in a fully aqueous solution. The detection limit (0.9 μM) of 1 for Cu(2+) is far lower than the WHO limit (31.5 μM) for drinking water. In addition, the resulting Cu(2+)-2· 1 complex can be further used to detect toxic cyanide through a color change from orange to yellow, indicating the recovery of 1 from Cu(2+)-2·1. Importantly, chemosensor 1 could be used to detect and quantify Cu(2+) in water samples, and a colorimetric test strip of 1 for the detection of Cu(2+) could be useful for all practical purposes.

A simple chalcone-based ratiometric chemosensor for silver ion

Herein, we report the selective binding of Ag(+) ion by the anthracene-based chalcone receptor 1. Receptor 1 behaves as a selective and sensitive chemosensor for the recognition of Ag(+) over other heavy and transition metal ions without any interference and is capable of detecting the metal ion down to 0.15 × 10(-6) M. Receptor 1 on binding with Ag(+) ions exhibits a ratiometric fluorescence enhancement, which is due to the inhibition of photoinduced electron transfer along with the intramolecular charge transfer mechanism.

Development of fluorescent lead II sensor based on an anthracene derived chalcone

A highly selective fluorescent probe for Cu2+ based on rhodamine B derivative

A new fluorescent probe 1 for Cu(2+) based on a rhodamine B derivative was designed and synthesized. Probe 1 displays high sensitivity toward Cu(2+) and about a 37-fold increase in fluorescence emission intensity is observed upon the addition of 10 equiv. Cu(2+) in 50% water/ethanol buffered at pH 7.10. Besides, upon binding Cu(2+) a remarkable color change from colorless to pink was easily observed by the naked eyes. The reversible dual chromo- and fluorogenic response toward Cu(2+) is likely due to the chelation-induced ring-opening of rhodamine spirolactam. The linear response range covers a concentration range of Cu(2+) from 8.0×10(-7) to 1.0×10(-4) mol/L and the detection limit is 3.0×10(-7) mol/L. Except Co(2+), the probe exhibits high selectivity for Cu(2+) over a large number of cations such as alkaline, alkaline earth and transitional metal ions. The accuracy and precision of the method were evaluated by the analysis of the standard reference material, copper in water (1.0 mol/L HNO3). The proposed probe has been used for direct measurement of Cu(2+) content in river water samples and imaging of Cu(2+) in living cells with satisfying results, which further demonstrates its value of practical applications in environmental and biological systems.

A novel cyanide-selective colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor: first molecular security keypad lock based on phosphotungstic acid and CN- inputs

Rhodamine B (RhB) an available dye has been developed as novel and efficient colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor for cyanide ions in an absolutely aqueous media. The UV-vis absorption and fluorescent emission titrations experiments have been employed to study the sensing process. RhB could act as an efficient "ON-OFF" fluorescent response for phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40 or PTA) based on an ion associate process. Also (RhB(+))3 · PTA(3-) could operate as an "OFF-ON" fluorescent sensor for cyanide anions based on a ligand substitution process. It has been identified as highly sensitive probe for CN(-) which responds at 0.3 and 0.04 μmol L(-1) concentration levels by absorption and fluorescent method respectively. Depending upon the sequence of addition of PTA and CN(-) ions into the solution, RhB could be as a molecular security keypad lock with PTA and CN(-) inputs. The ionic inputs to new fluorophore have been mimicked as a superimposed electronic molecular keypad lock. The results were compared successfully (>96%) with the data of a spectrophotometry approved method (EPA 9014-1) for cyanide ions.
