A achiral AIEE-active polymer-Cu(II) complex sensor for highly selective and enantioselective recognition of histidine

One Molecular Probe with Opposite Enantioselective Fluorescence Enhancement at Two Distinct Emissions

It is discovered that one enantiomer of a chiral substrate can greatly enhance the fluorescence of one molecular probe at one emitting signal (λ₁ = 517 nm), while the opposite enantiomer of the substrate greatly enhances the fluorescence of the same probe at a distinctively different emission (λ₂ = 575 nm). This probe is made of a 1,1'-binaphthyl-based chiral dialdehyde that in combination with Zn²⁺ under slightly acidic conditions shows a chemoselective and enantioselective fluorescent response to histidine. The opposite enantioselective fluorescent responses of the probe at two emissions allow it to be used to determine both the concentration and the enantiomeric composition of the substrate using a single probe. The mechanistic study has revealed two very different reaction pathways when the two enantiomers of the substrate are treated with the probe. These reaction pathways generate two different products, one dimeric and another polymeric, with very different emissions.

Pair of chiral 2D silver(I) enantiomers: chiral recognition of L- and D-histidine via differential pulse voltammetry

Self-assembly of AgPF₆ with a pair of chiral tridentate ligands (1S,1'S,1''S,2R,2'R,2''R) and (1R,1'R,1''R,2S,2'S,2''S)-(benzenetricarbonyltris(azanediyl))tris(2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diyl)triisonicotinate (s,r-L) and (r,s-L) in a mixture of methanol and dioxane yields 2D sheets consisting of [Ag(s,r-L)](PF₆)·3C₄H₈O₂·0.5H₂O and [Ag(r,s-L)](PF₆)·3C₄H₈O₂·0.5H₂O, respectively. The differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) technique using the pair of chiral 2D-sheet enantiomers was employed for chiral discrimination of amino acid enantiomers, and was found to be an effective tool for enantio-recognition of L- and D-histidines. Both the size and the binding site of amino acids were strongly dependent on electrochemical enantio-recognition via the chiral 2D sheets.

Coordination-Induced Emission from Tetraphenylethylene Units and Their Applications

Thanks to the potential of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomena, improved stabilities, and the good selectivity and sensitivity of the chemical responses exhibited by the products, coordination-driven self-assembly with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units has recently received much attention and has been widely investigated for application in chemical sensors, cell imaging agents, light-harvesting systems, and others. Several reviews have emerged on the topics of AIE chemistry and aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based supramolecular assembles, however, there is still a distinct lack of full overviews of emission enhancement from the viewpoint of metal-coordination effects. Thus, this minireview offers recent advances that have been made in the design and application of TPE-based metallacycles, metallacages, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers (CPs).

Spiropyran-modified upconversion nanocomposite as a fluorescent sensor for diagnosis of histidinemia

Histidinemia is a congenital metabolic disorder where the histidine (His) metabolism is blocked, resulting in increased concentrations of His in blood and urine. The disease causes an abnormal development of the patient's nervous system, which leads to many serious illnesses. Therefore, it is very important to diagnose early. In this study, we developed a novel fluorescent nanosensor NaGdF₄:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺@SiO₂–spiropyran (UCNP@SiO₂–SP). The nanosensor displayed a “turn-off” fluorescence response towards His. When His was mixed with UCNP@SiO₂–SP, His could specifically bind to SP, which could cause the isomerization of SP. The structure of SP was changed from spiroform into merocyanine form. The luminescence of the sensor was overlapped with the absorption of the merocyanine form. As a result, His will lead to fluorescence quenching of the sensor based on inner filter effects (IFE), which can be used to detect His. Importantly, as the first report of a UCNP@SiO₂–SP nanosensor for detecting His, this method exhibits good selectivity and anti-interference capability. The detection limit is 4.4 μM. In addition, the amount of His in urine was also measured, suggesting the applicability of this sensor for histidinemia diagnosis.
