Applications of peptides in nanosystems for diagnosing and managing bacterial sepsis

Sepsis represents a critical medical condition stemming from an imbalanced host immune response to infections, which is linked to a significant burden of disease. Despite substantial efforts in laboratory and clinical research, sepsis remains a prominent contributor to mortality worldwide. Nanotechnology presents innovative opportunities for the advancement of sepsis diagnosis and treatment. Due to their unique properties, including diversity, ease of synthesis, biocompatibility, high specificity, and excellent pharmacological efficacy, peptides hold great potential as part of nanotechnology approaches against sepsis. Herein, we present a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the applications of peptides in nanosystems for combating sepsis, with the potential to expedite diagnosis and enhance management outcomes. Firstly, sepsis pathophysiology, antisepsis drug targets, current modalities in management and diagnosis with their limitations, and the potential of peptides to advance the diagnosis and management of sepsis have been adequately addressed. The applications have been organized into diagnostic or managing applications, with the last one being further sub-organized into nano-delivered bioactive peptides with antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity, peptides as targeting moieties on the surface of nanosystems against sepsis, and peptides as nanocarriers for antisepsis agents. The studies have been grouped thematically and discussed, emphasizing the constructed nanosystem, physicochemical properties, and peptide-imparted enhancement in diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy. The strengths, limitations, and research gaps in each section have been elaborated. Finally, current challenges and potential future paths to enhance the use of peptides in nanosystems for combating sepsis have been deliberately spotlighted. This review reaffirms peptides' potential as promising biomaterials within nanotechnology strategies aimed at improving sepsis diagnosis and management.

Mechanism analysis of surface structure-regulated Cu2O in photocatalytic antibacterial process

The effects of exposing crystal planes and vacancy defect engineering can induce unique surface atom arrangements that strongly influence the physicochemical properties of semiconductor materials. This paper used Cu2O with different surface structures as a research model. A liquid-phase method was chosen for surface structure regulation to prepare Cu2O semiconductors (Vo-(111)Cu2O, Vo-(100)Cu2O, Vo-(110)Cu2O) with different exposed crystalline surfaces analyze the antibacterial mechanisms of other faceted models in the photodynamic antibacterial process. The bactericidal effect of Vo-(111)Cu2O (40 μg/mL, 100%) was better than that of Vo-(100)Cu2O and Vo-(110)Cu2O. DFT simulations show that the photocatalytic antimicrobial performance of Vo-(111)Cu2O is improved due to surface defect structures caused by unsaturated coordination bonds and suspension bonds on its exposed crystalline surfaces. The suspension bonds act as active centres for trapping electrons, leading to a lower carrier complexation rate on the material surface. The antibacterial mechanism of Vo-(111)Cu2O showed that oxidative sterilization by reactive oxygen species (ROS) was the dominant factor (61.98%) in the antibacterial process. The most potent depolarizing effect on E. coli, the highest copper ion solubilization, and the highest ROS yield. Therefore, ROS oxidative sterilization, copper ion leaching sterilization, and contact damage synergistically affect E. coli from the inside out.

Future Nanotechnology-Based Strategies for Improved Management of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a recalcitrant pathogen, which can cause gastric disorders. During the past decades, polypharmacy-based regimens, such as triple and quadruple therapies have been widely used against H. pylori. However, polyantibiotic therapies can disturb the host gastric/gut microbiota and lead to antibiotic resistance. Thus, simpler but more effective approaches should be developed. Here, some recent advances in nanostructured drug delivery systems to treat H. pylori infection are summarized. Also, for the first time, a drug release paradigm is proposed to prevent H. pylori antibiotic resistance along with an IVIVC model in order to connect the drug release profile with a reduction in bacterial colony counts. Then, local delivery systems including mucoadhesive, mucopenetrating, and cytoadhesive nanobiomaterials are discussed in the battle against H. pylori infection. Afterward, engineered delivery platforms including polymer-coated nanoemulsions and polymer-coated nanoliposomes are poposed. These bioinspired platforms can contain an antimicrobial agent enclosed within smart multifunctional nanoformulations. These bioplatforms can prevent the development of antibiotic resistance, as well as specifically killing H. pylori with no or only slight negative effects on the host gastrointestinal microbiota. Finally, the essential checkpoints that should be passed to confirm the potential effectiveness of anti-H. pylori nanosystems are discussed.

A polyglutamic acid/tannic acid-based nano drug delivery system: Antibacterial, immunoregulation and sustained therapeutic strategies for oral ulcers

Oral ulcers are a common inflammatory mucosal ulcer, and the moist and dynamic environment in the oral cavity makes topical pharmacological treatment of oral ulcers challenging. Herein, oral ulcer tissue adhesion nanoparticles were prepared by using esterification reaction between polyglutamic acid and tannic acid, and at the same time doxycycline hydrochloride was loaded into the nanoparticles. The obtained slow drug release effect of the drug-loaded nanoparticles reduced the toxicity of the drug, and by penetrating into the fine crevice region of the wound tissue and adhering to it, they could in-situ release the carried drug more effectively and thus have shown significant antibacterial effects. In addition, tannic acid in the system conferred adhesion, antioxidant and immune regulation activities to the nanocarriers. A rat oral ulcer model based on fluorescent labeling was established to investigate the retention of nanoparticles at the ulcer, and the results showed that the retention rate of drug-loaded nanoparticles at the ulcer was 17 times higher than that of pure drug. Due to the antibacterial and immune regulation effects of the drug-loaded nanoparticles, the healing of oral ulcer wounds was greatly accelerated. Such application of doxycycline hydrochloride loaded polyglutamic acid/tannic acid nanoparticles is a novel and effective treatment strategy for oral ulcer.

Advances in Functionalization of Bioresorbable Nanomembranes and Nanoparticles for Their Use in Biomedicine

Bioresorbable nanomembranes (NMs) and nanoparticles (NPs) are powerful polymeric materials playing an important role in biomedicine, as they can effectively reduce infections and inflammatory clinical patient conditions due to their high biocompatibility, ability to physically interact with biomolecules, large surface area, and low toxicity. In this review, the most common bioabsorbable materials such as those belonging to natural polymers and proteins for the manufacture of NMs and NPs are reviewed. In addition to biocompatibility and bioresorption, current methodology on surface functionalization is also revisited and the most recent applications are highlighted. Considering the most recent use in the field of biosensors, tethered lipid bilayers, drug delivery, wound dressing, skin regeneration, targeted chemotherapy and imaging/diagnostics, functionalized NMs and NPs have become one of the main pillars of modern biomedical applications.

Functionalization of and through Melanin: Strategies and Bio-Applications

A unique feature of nanoparticles for bio-application is the ease of achieving multi-functionality through covalent and non-covalent functionalization. In this way, multiple therapeutic actions, including chemical, photothermal and photodynamic activity, can be combined with different bio-imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance, photoacoustic, and fluorescence imaging, in a theragnostic approach. In this context, melanin-related nanomaterials possess unique features since they are intrinsically biocompatible and, due to their optical and electronic properties, are themselves very efficient photothermal agents, efficient antioxidants, and photoacoustic contrast agents. Moreover, these materials present a unique versatility of functionalization, which makes them ideal for the design of multifunctional platforms for nanomedicine integrating new functions such as drug delivery and controlled release, gene therapy, or contrast ability in magnetic resonance and fluorescence imaging. In this review, the most relevant and recent examples of melanin-based multi-functionalized nanosystems are discussed, highlighting the different methods of functionalization and, in particular, distinguishing pre-functionalization and post-functionalization. In the meantime, the properties of melanin coatings employable for the functionalization of a variety of material substrates are also briefly introduced, especially in order to explain the origin of the versatility of melanin functionalization. In the final part, the most relevant critical issues related to melanin functionalization that may arise during the design of multifunctional melanin-like nanoplatforms for nanomedicine and bio-application are listed and discussed.

Utilizing Imine Bonds to Create a Self-Gated Mesoporous Silica Material with Controlled Release and Antimicrobial Properties

In recent years, silica nanomaterials have been widely studied as carriers in the field of antibacterial activity in food. Therefore, it is a promising but challenging proposition to construct responsive antibacterial materials with food safety and controllable release capabilities using silica nanomaterials. In this paper, a pH-responsive self-gated antibacterial material is reported, which uses mesoporous silica nanomaterials as a carrier and achieves self-gating of the antibacterial agent through pH-sensitive imine bonds. This is the first study in the field of food antibacterial materials to achieve self-gating through the chemical bond of the antibacterial material itself. The prepared antibacterial material can effectively sense changes in pH values caused by the growth of foodborne pathogens and choose whether to release antibacterial substances and at what rate. The development of this antibacterial material does not introduce other components, ensuring food safety. In addition, carrying mesoporous silica nanomaterials can also effectively enhance the inhibitory ability of the active substance.

Functionalized lipid-based drug delivery nanosystems for the treatment of human infectious diseases

Infectious diseases are still public health problems. Microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the main causing agents related to these diseases. In this context, the search for new effective strategies in prevention and/or treatment is considered essential, since current drugs often have side effects or end up, causing microbial resistance, making it a serious health problem. As an alternative to these limitations, nanotechnology has been widely used. The use of lipid-based drug delivery nanosystems (DDNs) has some advantages, such as biocompatibility, low toxicity, controlled release, the ability to carry both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs, in addition to be easel scalable. Besides, as an improvement, studies involving the conjugation of signalling molecules on the surfaces of these nanocarriers can allow the target of certain tissues or cells. Thus, this review summarizes the performance of functionalized lipid-based DDNs for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

Antibody-Antimicrobial Conjugates for Combating Antibiotic Resistance

As the development of new antibiotics lags far behind the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, alternative strategies to resolve this dilemma are urgently required. Antibody-drug conjugate is a promising therapeutic platform to delivering cytotoxic payloads precisely to target cells for efficient disease treatment. Antibody-antimicrobial conjugates (AACs) have recently attracted considerable interest from researchers as they can target bacteria in the target sites and improve the effectiveness of drugs (i.e., reduced drug dosage and adverse effects), abating the upsurge of antimicrobial resistance. In this review, the selection and progress of three essential blocks that compose the AACs: antibodies, antimicrobial payloads, and linkers are discussed. The commonly used conjugation strategies and the latest applications of AACs in recent years are also summarized. The challenges and opportunities of this booming technology are also discussed at the end of this review.

Nanoparticles for Antimicrobial Agents Delivery-An Up-to-Date Review

Infectious diseases constitute an increasing threat to public health and medical systems worldwide. Particularly, the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens has left the pharmaceutical arsenal unarmed to fight against such severe microbial infections. Thus, the context has called for a paradigm shift in managing bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections, leading to the collision of medicine with nanotechnology. As a result, renewed research interest has been noted in utilizing various nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles, aiming to overcome the limitations of current treatment options. In more detail, numerous studies have loaded natural and synthetic antimicrobial agents into different inorganic, lipid, and polymeric-based nanomaterials and tested them against clinically relevant pathogens. In this respect, this paper reviews the most recently reported successfully fabricated nanoformulations that demonstrated a great potential against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites of interest for human medicine.

Pharmaceutical nanotechnology: Antimicrobial peptides as potential new drugs against WHO list of critical, high, and medium priority bacteria

Nanobiotechnology is a relatively unexplored area that has, nevertheless, shown relevant results in the fight against some diseases. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are biomacromolecules with potential activity against multi/extensively drug-resistant bacteria, with a lower risk of generating bacterial resistance. They can be considered an excellent biotechnological alternative to conventional drugs. However, the application of several AMPs to biological systems is hampered by their poor stability and lifetime, inactivating them completely. Therefore, nanotechnology plays an important role in the development of new AMP-based drugs, protecting and carrying the bioactive to the target. This is the first review article on the different reported nanosystems using AMPs against bacteria listed on the WHO priority list. The current shortage of information implies a nanobiotechnological potential to obtain new drugs or repurpose drugs based on the AMP-drug synergistic effect.

Preparation and shape change of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded on the dialdehyde cellulose by in-situ synthesis method

With the improvement of medical and health care level in our society, the demand for antibacterial materials is increasing. In this work, we prepared the antibacterial materials by loading silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) with in-situ synthesis method. DAC was prepared by pretreating cellulose fiber with sodium metaperiodate (NaIO₄) to convert the hydroxyl group into aldehyde group, and then reacted with silver nitrate (AgNO₃) to obtain AgNPs loaded on DAC. UV-Vis results show that the characteristic absorption peak of AgNPs at 428 nm appeared in the AgNPs-loaded-DAC. It was observed by SEM that the spherical AgNPs were distributed uniformly on the DAC surface without obvious flocculation. The color of DAC was not changed significantly, indicating that a small amount of AgNPs was loaded. In addition, sodium citrate (Na₃C₆H₅O₇) was added in the reaction of DAC and AgNO₃ and its effect on the formation of AgNPs was studied. The results demonstrated that the color of DAC turned deeper and finally dark yellow with reaction time extended. When the reaction time was 60 h, the spherical AgNPs were gradually grown and transformed into triangular prism on the DAC surface. The antibacterial properties of AgNPs showed inhibition zones of 4.90 mm and 7.35 mm (60 h) against Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus), respectively, which increased by 40.00% and 14.85% compared with spherical AgNPs (2.5 h) obtained without Na₃C₆H₅O₇. The research of AgNPs-loaded cellulose-based materials promotes the development prospect of new nano-antibacterial materials.

Targeting foodborne pathogens via surface-functionalized nano-antimicrobials

The incorporation of antibiotics and bioactive compounds into non-toxic nanoparticles has been popularly used to produce effective antimicrobial nanocarriers against foodborne pathogens. These systems can protect antimicrobials against harsh environments, control their release, and increase their antimicrobial activities; however, their functions can be decreased by some major barriers. Intracellular localization of bacteria protects them from the host immune system and antimicrobial agents. Also, bacteria can cause constant infection by nestling in professional phagocytic cells. In the last years, surface functionalization of nanocarriers by passive and active modification methods has been applied for their protection against clearance from the blood, increasing both circulation time and uptake by target cells. For achieving this objective, different functional agents such as specifically targeted peptides internalize ligands, saccharide ligands, or even therapeutic molecules (e.g., antibodies or enzymes) are used. In this review, techniques for functionalizing the surface of antimicrobial-loaded nanocarriers have been described. This article offers a comprehensive review of the potential of functional nanoparticles to increase the performance of antimicrobials against foodborne pathogens through targeting delivery.

Recent Advances in the Surface Functionalization of Nanomaterials for Antimicrobial Applications

Innovations in nanotechnology have had an immense impact on medicine, such as in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and medical devices that combat different pathogens. The pathogens that may cause biofilm-associated nosocomial diseases are multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species. About 65-80% of infections are caused by biofilm-associated pathogens creating a move in the international community toward developing antimicrobial therapies to eliminate such pathogenic infections. Several nanomaterials (NMs) have been discovered and significantly employed in various antipathogenic therapies. These NMs have unique properties of singlet oxygen production, high absorption of near-infrared irradiation, and reasonable conversion of light to heat. In this review, functionalized NPs that combat different pathogenic infections are introduced. This review highlights NMs that combat infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and other pathogenic microorganisms. It also highlights the biomedical application of NPs with regard to antipathogenic activities.

Surface modification of nano-drug delivery systems for enhancing antibiotic delivery and activity

Rampant antimicrobial resistance calls for innovative strategies to effectively control bacterial infections, enhance antibacterial efficacy, minimize side effects, and protect existing antibiotics in the market. Therefore, to enhance the delivery of antibiotics and increase their bioavailability and accumulation at the site of infection, the surfaces of nano-drug delivery systems have been diversely modified. This strategy applies various covalent and non-covalent techniques to introduce specific coating materials that have been found to be effective against various sensitive and resistant microorganisms. In this review, we discuss the techniques of surface modification of nanocarriers loaded with antibacterial agents. Furthermore, saccharides, polymers, peptides, antibiotics, enzymes and cell membranes coatings that have been used for surface functionalization of nano-drug delivery systems are described, emphasizing current approaches for enhancing delivery, bioavailability, and efficacy of surface-modified antibacterial nanocarriers at infection sites. This article offers a critical overview of the potential of surface-modified antibacterial nanocarriers to overcome the limitations of conventional antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections. Antimicrobial profile of a dental implant abutment coating to prevent adhesion and migration of bacteria and screw loosening

OBJECTIVE

Failure of dental implants treatment is frequently the result of bacterial colonization of implants followed by diseases like peri-implantitis. Recent studies have been made regarding the surface treatment of implants components, namely abutments that are in the interface of the living tissue with the implant. This work aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial profile of a silane-based coating with TiO₂ adapted to an abutment screw, that was also developed as an anti-loosening agent, to prevent adhesion and migration of Gram + and Gram-bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, respectively.

METHODS

Direct contact antimicrobial studies were conducted on coated and uncoated samples by resazurin fluorescent assay and cytotoxicity assessment was done via MTT indirect method on days 1 and 4. Sterilizations studies by FTIR analysis were also performed to understand the ideal balance between sterilization efficacy and coating functionality subjecting the samples to ethylene oxide, gamma irradiation, and autoclave sterilization, before antimicrobial testing. The implant system as a whole was also studied for its ability to block bacterial migration and preventing microleakage as well as an assessment of initial bacterial adhesion evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.

RESULTS

Direct contact studies performed on coated samples showed a very high antimicrobial activity, while cytotoxicity assays revealed the coating to be safe and non-leachable. Sterilizations studies showed that the antimicrobial features of the coating were preserved and interchangeable regardless of the sterilization method. The implant system migration studies demonstrated that the implant system works as an efficient barrier for the studied bacteria.

SIGNIFICANCE

The acquired results clearly show that it is possible to obtain a highly functional coating with obvious and marked antimicrobial features that together with an abutment that prevents bacterial migration and versatility in sterilization methodology has a very high potential in the dental implant field.

Antimicrobial Peptides: The Promising Therapeutics for Cutaneous Wound Healing

Chronic wound infections have caused an increasing number of deaths and economic burden, which necessitates wound treatment options. Hitherto, the development of functional wound dressings has achieved reasonable progress. Antibacterial agents, growth factors, and miRNAs are incorporated in different wound dressings to treat various types of wounds. As an effective antimicrobial agent and emerging wound healing therapeutic, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted significant attention. The present study focuses on the application of AMPs in wound healing and discusses the types, properties and formulation strategies of AMPs used for wound healing. In addition, the clinical trial and the current status of studies on "antimicrobial peptides and wound healing" are elaborated through bibliometrics. Also, the challenges and opportunities for further development and utilization of AMP formulations in wound healing are discussed.

Microbiota and cancer: In vitro and in vivo models to evaluate nanomedicines

Nanomedicine implication in cancer treatment and diagnosis studies witness huge attention, especially with the promising results obtained in preclinical studies. Despite this, only few nanomedicines succeeded to pass clinical phase. The human microbiota plays obvious roles in cancer development. Nanoparticles have been successfully used to modulate human microbiota and notably tumor associated microbiota. Taking the microbiota involvement under consideration when testing nanomedicines for cancer treatment might be a way to improve the poor translation from preclinical to clinical trials. Co-culture models of bacteria and cancer cells, as well as animal cancer-microbiota models offer a better representation for the tumor microenvironment and so potentially better platforms to test nanomedicine efficacy in cancer treatment. These models would allow closer representation of human cancer and might smoothen the passage from preclinical to clinical cancer studies for nanomedicine efficacy.

Polymeric Nanoparticles for Antimicrobial Therapies: An Up-To-Date Overview

Despite the many advancements in the pharmaceutical and medical fields and the development of numerous antimicrobial drugs aimed to suppress and destroy pathogenic microorganisms, infectious diseases still represent a major health threat affecting millions of lives daily. In addition to the limitations of antimicrobial drugs associated with low transportation rate, water solubility, oral bioavailability and stability, inefficient drug targeting, considerable toxicity, and limited patient compliance, the major cause for their inefficiency is the antimicrobial resistance of microorganisms. In this context, the risk of a pre-antibiotic era is a real possibility. For this reason, the research focus has shifted toward the discovery and development of novel and alternative antimicrobial agents that could overcome the challenges associated with conventional drugs. Nanotechnology is a possible alternative, as there is significant evidence of the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of nanomaterials and nanoparticles in particular. Moreover, owing to their considerable advantages regarding their efficient cargo dissolving, entrapment, encapsulation, or surface attachment, the possibility of forming antimicrobial groups for specific targeting and destruction, biocompatibility and biodegradability, low toxicity, and synergistic therapy, polymeric nanoparticles have received considerable attention as potential antimicrobial drug delivery agents. In this context, the aim of this paper is to provide an up-to-date overview of the most recent studies investigating polymeric nanoparticles designed for antimicrobial therapies, describing both their targeting strategies and their effects.

Antimicrobial metal-based nanoparticles: a review on their synthesis, types and antimicrobial action

The investigation of novel nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity has grown in recent years due to the increased incidence of nosocomial infections occurring during hospitalization and food poisoning derived from foodborne pathogens. Antimicrobial agents are necessary in various fields in which biological contamination occurs. For example, in food packaging they are used to control food contamination by microbes, in the medical field the microbial agents are important for reducing the risk of contamination in invasive and routine interventions, and in the textile industry, they can limit the growth of microorganisms due to sweat. The combination of nanotechnology with materials that have an intrinsic antimicrobial activity can result in the development of novel antimicrobial substances. Specifically, metal-based nanoparticles have attracted much interest due to their broad effectiveness against pathogenic microorganisms due to their high surface area and high reactivity. The aim of this review was to explore the state-of-the-art in metal-based nanoparticles, focusing on their synthesis methods, types, and their antimicrobial action. Different techniques used to synthesize metal-based nanoparticles were discussed, including chemical and physical methods and "green synthesis" methods that are free of chemical agents. Although the most studied nanoparticles with antimicrobial properties are metallic or metal-oxide nanoparticles, other types of nanoparticles, such as superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles and silica-releasing systems also exhibit antimicrobial properties. Finally, since the quantification and understanding of the antimicrobial action of metal-based nanoparticles are key topics, several methods for evaluating in vitro antimicrobial activity and the most common antimicrobial mechanisms (e.g., cell damage and changes in the expression of metabolic genes) were discussed in this review.

An Update on Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) and Their Delivery Strategies for Wound Infections

Bacterial infections occur when wound healing fails to reach the final stage of healing, which is usually hindered by the presence of different pathogens. Different topical antimicrobial agents are used to inhibit bacterial growth due to antibiotic failure in reaching the infected site, which is accompanied very often by increased drug resistance and other side effects. In this review, we focus on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), especially those with a high potential of efficacy against multidrug-resistant and biofilm-forming bacteria and fungi present in wound infections. Currently, different AMPs undergo preclinical and clinical phase to combat infection-related diseases. AMP dendrimers (AMPDs) have been mentioned as potent microbial agents. Various AMP delivery strategies that are used to combat infection and modulate the healing rate-such as polymers, scaffolds, films and wound dressings, and organic and inorganic nanoparticles-have been discussed as well. Micro/nanoencapsulation strategy to improve the efficiency of natural antimicrobials against Listeria monocytogenes in food products

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the etiological agent of listeriosis diseases in humans, is a serious pathogenic microorganism threatening the food safety especially in ready-to-eat food products. Adhesion on both biotic and abiotic surfaces is making it a potential source of contamination by Lm. Also, this bacterium has become more tolerant in food processing conditions, including in the presence of adverse conditions such as cold and dehydration. One of the attractive and effective methods to inhibit the growth of Lm in the food products is using natural antimicrobial agents, which can be a suitable alternative to synthetic preservatives for producing organic food products. The use of pure natural antimicrobials has some limitations including low stability against harsh conditions, low solubility and absorption, and un-controlled release, which can decrease their functions. These limitations have been overcome by using new advanced encapsulation techniques, which have boosted the anti-listerial activity of natural agents. Therefore, the current paper is aiming to review the results of recent studies conducted on using natural antimicrobials added directly or as encapsulated forms into the food formulation to control the growth of Lm. The information of current study can be used by the researchers as well as the food companies for the optimization of food formulations through encapsulation strategies to control Lm and potentially produce safe foods for the consumers.
