Abstract
INTRODUCTION Plants of the Rosa genus are renowned for their pronounced and pleasant aroma and colors. OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to develop a novel liquid chromatographic triple quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometric (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) method for the investigation of the bioactive fingerprint of petals of different genotypes belonging to Rosa damascena and Rosa centifolia species. METHODOLOGY Central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the optimization of the LC-QTOF-MS/MS method. The method was validated and target, suspect, and non-target screening workflows were applied. Statistical analysis and chemometric tools were utilized to explore the metabolic fingerprint of the Rosa species. RESULTS RSM revealed that the optimal extraction parameters involved mixing 11 mg of sample with 1 mL of MeOH:H2O (70:30, v/v). Target analysis confirmed the presence of 11 analytes, all of which demonstrated low limits of quantification (LOQs; as low as 0.048 ng mg-1) and sufficient recoveries (RE: 85%-107%). In total, 28 compounds were tentatively identified through suspect analysis. Non-target analysis enabled the generation of robust OPLS-DA and HCA models that classified the samples according to their species with 100% accuracy. CONCLUSIONS A novel LC-QTOF-MS/MS method was developed and applied in the analysis of 47 R. centifolia and R. damascena flowers belonging to different genotypes.

Abstract
Nature is a valuable source of anti-oxidants that have a health-promoting effect by inhibiting various undesirable changes leading to cell degradation and, consequently, potential disease ailments. One of them is gallic acid which has been used as a healing agent since ancient times. Currently, due to various beneficial properties, this compound is considered to be one of the main phenolic acids of great importance in numerous industries. It is commonly used as a substance protecting against the harmful effects of UV radiation, an astringent in cosmetic preparations, and a preservative in food products. Therefore, gallic acid is now deemed essential for both human health and industry. Increasingly better methods of its isolation and analysis are being developed, and new solutions are being sought to increase its production. This review, presenting a concise characterization of gallic acid, updates the knowledge about its various biological activities and methods used for its isolation and determination, including chromatographic and non-chromatographic methods.

Abstract
Vitamin K is one of the many health-promoting substances whose impact on the human body has been underestimated until recently. However, recently published research results have changed this situation, prompting some researchers to consider it a new panacea for diseases of old age. The result is a significant increase in interest in the accurate analysis of vitamin K in various types of samples, ranging from food, through dietary supplements, to biological matrices and clinical trials, both observational and interventional. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge about the proven and speculated biological activity of vitamin K and its importance for the world's aging societies, including the methods used for its isolation and analysis in various matrices types. Of all the analytical methods, the currently preferred methods of choice for the direct analysis of vitamin K are chromatographic methods, in particular liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. This technique, despite its sensitivity and selectivity, requires an appropriate stage of sample preparation. As there is still room for improvement in the efficiency of these methods, especially at the sample preparation stage, this review shows the directions that need to be taken to make these methods faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.

Abstract
The present study compared the extracts obtained from the epicarp, seed, and seed tegument of avocado var. Hass with pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The extracts were quantified in terms of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant capacity (AC). The PLE extracts had a global yield (
) like that obtained with UAE using ethanol (Et) as the solvent. For the TPC, the extracts obtained with both techniques showed no significant differences (
). On the other hand, the epicarp extracts obtained with PLE had higher values for AC: 829.8 μmol TE/gDe (ABTS) and 3,215.1 μmol Fe2+/g De (FRAP), recorded for UAE/Et. The AC in the avocado residue extracted with PLE suggested a high potential for applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetology products.

Abstract
Population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and agriculture lead to a decrease in the availability of clean water. Coagulation/flocculation is one of the most common operations in water, urban wastewater, and industrial effluents treatment systems. Usually, this process is achieved using conventional coagulants that have their performance affected by pH, are poorly biodegradable, produce a huge volume of sludge, and are associated with degenerative diseases. As a substitute for these chemicals, natural coagulants have been highly researched for the last ten/fifteen years, especially the tannin-based (TB) ones. This review paper highlights the advantages of using these greener products to treat different types of water, wastewater, and effluents, especially from dairy, cosmetics, laundries, textile, and other industries. TB coagulants can successfully remove turbidity, color, suspended solids, soluble organic (chemical/biochemical oxygen demand) and inorganic matter (total phosphate, and heavy metals), and microorganisms. TB coagulants are compatible with other treatment technologies and can be used as coagulant-aid to reduce the consumption of chemicals. TB coagulants can reduce operating costs of water treatment due to less alkalinity consumption, as pH adjustment is sometimes unnecessary, and the production of a smaller volume of biodegradable sludge. TB coagulants can be synthesized by valorizing wastes/by-products, from the bark of some specific trees and skins/pomace of different fruits and vegetables. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) on TB coagulants are discussed. The progress of TB coagulants is promising, but some threats should be overcome, especially on tannin extraction and cationization. The market competition with conventional coagulants, the feasibility of application in real waters, and the reluctance of the industries to adapt to new technologies are other weaknesses to be surpassed.

Abstract
Large amounts of food waste are produced each year. These residues require appropriate management to reduce their environmental impact and, at the same time, economic loss. However, this waste is still rich in compounds (e.g., colorants, antioxidants, polyphenols, fatty acids, vitamins, and proteins) that can find potential applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Conventional extraction techniques suffer some drawbacks when applied to the exploitation of food residues, including large amounts of polluting solvents, increased time of extraction, possible degradation of the active molecules during extraction, low yields, and reduced extraction selectivity. For these reasons, advanced extraction techniques have emerged in order to obtain efficient residue exploitation using more sustainable processes. In particular, performing extraction under high-pressure conditions, such as supercritical fluids and pressurized liquid extraction, offers several advantages for the extraction of bioactive molecules. These include the reduced use of toxic solvents, reduced extraction time, high selectivity, and the possibility of being applied in combination in a cascade of progressive extractions. In this review, an overview of high-pressure extraction techniques related to the recovery of high added value compounds from waste generated in food industries is presented and a critical discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each process is reported. Furthermore, the possibility of combined multi-stage extractions, as well as economic and environmental aspects, are discussed in order to provide a complete overview of the topic.

Abstract
Rapid identification of chemical analogues in herbal medicines using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was an efficient tool for discoveries of potentially active ingredients. Multi-dimensional combination of various separation technologies could significantly enhance the capacities for detection of trace components and discrimination of multiple isomers. In this study, an integrated two-step filtering strategy on liquid chromatography-ion mobility tandem with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-IM-QTOF MS) was developed for identification of analogues in complex matrixes. The extracted raw data were preliminarily filtered by a collision-cross section (CCS) interval generated from power regression with confidence level at 99% for prediction of analogues. Then, the remained ions were further screened using a mass defect filtering (MDF) window based on m/z and decimal m/z of potential skeletons and substituents. By applying this strategy, 86, 102, 73, and 57 isoquinoline alkaloids were identified in herbal materials of Coptis chinensis Franch (CC), C. deltoidea C.Y.Cheng et Hsiao (CD), C. teeta Wall (CT), and Corydalis yanhusuo W.T.Wang (CY). The integrated two-step filtering presented higher efficiencies on exclusion of the background interference and reducing the false-positive rates than previously reported approaches. This study facilitated the application of LC-IM-MS on small molecular analysis and promoted the discoveries of bioactive components of herbal medicines for further pharmacological researches and quality control.

Abstract
AbstractIn this study, to increase the content of quercetin in the isolates obtained from the white and red onion scales, in accordance with the zero waste philosophy, using water as an environmentally and healthy friendly extractant, a mathematical model was constructed, based on the Central Composite Design. The suitability of the model for the accurate and quick study of complex relationships was demonstrated by obtaining a statistically insignificant difference in the yield predicted by the model and that determined experimentally under optimal extraction conditions, i.e., 44.14 mg/g (33.57 mg/g) and 45.54 mg/g (33.31 mg/g) for white (red) onion scales, respectively. To present the obtained isolates applicability, their biological activity was assessed in terms of antioxidant activity and antifungal activity against various fungi, showing properties that are sufficient to encourage the use of this material, previously treated as worthless waste, for the production of various functional ingredients, including functional food additives. Moreover, they can be also used to produce safe and effective protectants meeting the GRAS criteria.

Abstract
Herbal medicines are important options for the treatment of several illnesses. Although their therapeutic applicability has been demonstrated throughout history, several concerns about their safety and efficacy are raised regularly. Quality control of articles of botanical origin, including plant materials, plant extracts, and herbal medicines, remains a challenge. Traditionally, qualitative (e.g., identification and chromatographic profile) and quantitative (e.g., content analyses) markers are applied for this purpose. The compound-oriented approach may stand alone in some cases (e.g., atropine in Atropa belladonna). However, for most plant materials, plant extracts, and herbal medicines, it is not possible to assure quality based only on the content or presence/absence of one (sometimes randomly selected) compound. In this sense, pattern-oriented approaches have been extensively studied, introducing the use of multivariate data analysis on chromatographic/spectroscopic fingerprints. The use of genetic methods for plant material/plant extract authentication has also been proposed. In this study, traditional approaches are reviewed, although the focus is on the applicability of fingerprints for quality control, highlighting the most used approaches, as well as demonstrating their usefulness. The literature review shows that a pattern-oriented approach may be successfully applied to the quality assessment of articles of botanical origin, while also providing directions for a compound-oriented approach and a rational marker selection. These observations indicate that it may be worth considering to include fingerprints and their data analysis in the regulatory framework for herbal medicines concerning quality control since this is the foundation of the holistic view that these complex products demand.

Abstract
The parents' addictions and eating habits have a significant influence on the child's growth. The first stool of a newborn baby provides a large amount of information about xenobiotics transmitted by the mother's body. The analytical technique used in the study is ion chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (IC-PAD). The biological samples, which were obtained from women staying in a maternity ward and their partners, revealed cyanide concentrations in urine samples spanning 1.30-25.3 μg L-1. Meanwhile, the results of the meconium samples were in the range of 1.54 μg L-1 to 24.9 μg L-1. Under the optimized chromatographic conditions, the IC-PAD system exhibited satisfactory repeatability (R < 3%, n = 3) and good linearity in the range of 1-100 μg L-1. Thus, it proved to be an effective tool for monitoring trace cyanide concentration in a series of human body fluid matrices, including meconium. Based on the literature review, this is the first application of the IC-PAD analytical technique for the determination of cyanide ions in meconium samples.

Abstract
The fruit, vegetable, legume, and cereal industries generate many wastes, representing an environmental pollution problem. However, these wastes are a rich source of antioxidant molecules such as terpenes, phenolic compounds, phytosterols, and bioactive peptides with potential applications mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries, and they exhibit multiple biological properties including antidiabetic, anti-obesity, antihypertensive, anticancer, and antibacterial properties. The aforementioned has increased studies on the recovery of antioxidant compounds using green technologies to value plant waste, since they represent more efficient and sustainable processes. In this review, the main antioxidant molecules from plants are briefly described and the advantages and disadvantages of the use of conventional and green extraction technologies used for the recovery and optimization of the yield of antioxidant naturals are detailed; finally, recent studies on biological properties of antioxidant molecules extracted from plant waste are presented here.
