Abstract
Graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C3N5), as a novel n-type metal-free material, is employed as a visible light-receptive catalyst because of its narrow band gap and abundant nitrogen. To overcome the low carrier mobility efficiency of g-C3N5, its modification by K ions was adopted. In addition, In2S3 was selected to couple with modified g-C3N5 to overcome the recombination of photogenerated e-/h+. As a novel photocatalytic material, it was proven to possess a high visible light absorption capacity and a strong H2O2 production ability (up to 3.89 mmol⋅L-1 in 2 h). Moreover, a S-scheme heterojunction structure was successfully constructed between the two materials, which was tested and confirmed to be successful in raising the photogenerated e-/h+ separation efficiency. Ultimately, the primary processes of photocatalytic H2O2 production were summarized by superoxide radical and rotating disc electron measurements. This research provides a fresh perspective for the synthesis of C3N5-based S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for producing H2O2.

Abstract
The possible impact of antivirals on ecosystems and the emergence of antiviral resistance are the reasons for concern about their environmental release. Consequently, there has been a significant increase in curiosity regarding their presence in both organic and synthetic systems in recent years. The primary objective of this review is to address the void of information regarding the global presence of antiviral drugs in both wastewater and natural water sources. Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants is an eco-friendly, cost-effective method that effectively addresses environmental degradation. The development of efficient photocatalysts remains a significant issue in accelerating the degradation of pollutants, especially when employing solar light. Thus, the development of Z-scheme and S-scheme semiconductor heterojunctions has emerged as a viable method to improve light absorption and enhance the redox capability of photocatalysts. The principles of Z-scheme and S-scheme are reviewed extensively. The degradation route and occurrence of antiviral are discussed briefly. Finally, a short preview of the degradation of antiviral using Z-scheme and S-scheme is also highlighted.

Abstract
Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions incorporating an exquisite hollow structure is an effective performance regulation strategy for the realization of high quantum efficiency and a strong redox ability over photocatalysts. Herein, we report the delicate design and preparation of a core-shell hollow CdS@CoTiO3 Z-scheme heterojunction with a CdS nanoparticle (NP)-constructed outer shell supported on a CoTiO3 nanorod (NR) inner shell. The in situ growth synthetic method led to a tightly connected interface for the heterojunction between CdS and CoTiO3, which shortened the transport distance of photoinduced charges from the interface to the surface. The promoted charge carrier separation efficiency and the retained strong redox capacity caused by the Z-scheme photoinduced charge-transfer mechanism were mainly responsible for the boosted photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the well-designed core-shell structure afforded a larger interfacial area by the multiple direction contact between CdS and CoTiO3, ensuring sufficient channels for efficient charge transfer, and thus further boosting the photocatalytic activity. As an efficient photocatalyst, the optimized CdS@CoTiO3 nanohybrids displayed excellent 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and tetracycline (TC) degradation efficiencies of 91.3% and 91.8%, respectively. This study presents a Z-scheme heterojunction based on ecofriendly CoTiO3, which could be valuable for the development of metal perovskite photocatalysts for application in environmental remediation, and also demonstrated the tremendous potential of integrating a Z-scheme heterojunction with the morphology design of photocatalyts.

Abstract
Wastewater pollutants are a major threat to natural resources, with antibiotics and heavy metals being common water contaminants. By harnessing clean, renewable solar energy, photocatalysis facilitates the synergistic removal of heavy metals and antibiotics. In this paper, MXene was both a template and raw material, and MXene-derived oxide (TiO2) and SnIn4S8 Z-scheme composite materials were synthesized and characterized. The synergistic mode of photocatalytic reduction and oxidation leads to the enhanced utilization of e-/h+ pairs. The TiO2/SnIn4S8 exhibited a higher photocatalytic capacity for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline (TC) (20 mg·L-1) and Cr(VI) (15 mg·L-1). The main active substances of TC degradation and Cr(VI) reduction were identified via free radical scavengers and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Additionally, the potential photocatalytic degradation route of TC was thoroughly elucidated through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Abstract
Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with unique optical properties and abundant catalytic sites are promising in photocatalysis. However, their light-induced instability and the difficulty of utilizing the photogenerated carriers for photocatalysis pose significant challenges. Here, MAg24 (M=Ag, Pd, Pt, and Au) NCs doped with diverse single heteroatoms have been encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH2, affording MAg24@UiO-66-NH2. Strikingly, compared with Ag25@UiO-66-NH2, the MAg24@UiO-66-NH2 doped with heteroatom exhibits much enhanced activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production, among which AuAg24@UiO-66-NH2 presents the best activity up to 3.6 mmol g-1 h-1, far superior to all other counterparts. Moreover, they display excellent photocatalytic recyclability and stability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that MAg24 NCs encapsulated into the MOF create a favorable charge transfer pathway, similar to a Z-scheme heterojunction, when exposed to visible light. This promotes charge separation, along with optimized Ag electronic state, which are responsible for the superior activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract
Construction of S-scheme heterojunction offers a promising way to enhance the photocatalytic performance of photocatalysts for converting solar energy into chemical energy. However, the photocatalytic H2 production in pure water without sacrificial agents is still a challenge. Herein, the IEF-11 with the best photocatalytic H2 production performance in MOFs and suitable band structure was selected and firstly constructed with g-C3N4 to obtain a S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic H2 production from pure water. As a result, the novel IEF-11/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic H2 production performance in pure water without any sacrificial agent, with a rate of 576 μmol/g/h, which is about 8 times than that of g-C3N4 and 23 times of IEF-11. The novel IEF-11/g-C3N4 photocatalysts also had a photocatalytic H2 production rate of up to 92 μmol/g/h under visible light and a good photocatalytic stability. The improved performance can be attributed to the efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers, faster charge transfer efficiency and longer photogenerated carrier lifetimes, which comes from the forming of S-scheme heterojunction in the IEF-11/g-C3N4 photocatalyst. This work is a promising guideline for obtaining MOF-based or g-C3N4-based photocatalysts with great photocatalytic water splitting performance.

Abstract
Owing to its stable graphene-like honeycomb structure, suitable band gap, and nontoxicity, SnC monolayer (ML) has attracted increasing attention in photocatalytic applications. One pertinent obstacle inherent to SnC ML-based photocatalysts has been the high energy barrier in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that always requires external energy input and/or strongly acidic conditions. Herein, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) SnC/ZrS2 van der Waals heterostructure (vdWHS) for highly efficient photocatalytic water splitting using first-principles calculations. The results show that the pristine vdWHS is an S-scheme heterostructure that works in acidic conditions for water splitting owing to the high energy barrier in HER. Notably, detailed further investigations show that doping Si in the SnC ML of the vdWHS can solve this high barrier problem, leading to a high-performance low-cost photocatalyst. Our work offers a convenient strategy to solve the notorious high barrier problem in HER that often troubles the SnC ML and other 2D materials such as transition metal dichalcogenide MLs for the design and fabrication of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract
Photocatalytic hydrogen production and pollutant degradation using a heterogeneous photocatalyst remains an alternative route for mitigating the impending pollution and energy crisis. Hence, the development of cost-effective and environmentally friendly semiconducting materials with high solar light captivation nature is imperative. To overcome this challenge, α-MnO2 nanorod (NR)-modified MOF UiO-66-NH2 (UNH) was prepared via a facile solvothermal method, which is efficient toward H2 evolution and oxy-tetracycline hydrochloride (O-TCH) degradation. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results of the α-MnO2@UNH (MnU) hybrid reveals its nanorod embedded in MOF matrix, and the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result confirms the interaction of UNH moiety with α-MnO2 NRs. Additionally, the outstanding separation of photogenerated excitons and the charge-transfer efficacy are further validated by photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and transient photocurrent analysis, which are the key causes for photoactivity augmentation in the MnU composites. The MnU-2 composite shows a superior O-TCH degradation efficiency of 93.23% and an excellent H2 production rate of about 410.6 μmol h-1 upon light irradiation. This study provides significant evidence in favor of the suggested mediator-free S-scheme-adapted charge migration path, and it effectively explains the enhanced exciton separation leading to extraordinary catalytic efficiency of the proposed composite.

Abstract
Agricultural runoff, fuel spillages, urbanization, hospitalization, and industrialization are some of the serious problems currently facing the world. In particular, byproducts that are hazardous to the ecosystem have the potential to mix with water used for drinking. Over the last three decades, various techniques, including biodegradation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), (e.g., photocatalysis, photo-Fenton oxidation, Fenton-like oxidation, and electrochemical oxidation process adsorption), filtration, and adsorption techniques, have been developed to remove hazardous byproducts. Among those, AOPs, photocatalysis has received special attention from the scientific community because of its unusual properties at the nanoscale and its layered structure. Recently, bismuth based semiconductor (BBSc) photocatalysts have played an important role in solving global energy demand and environmental pollution problems. In particular, bismuth-based Z-scheme heterojunction (BBZSH) is considered the best alternative route to overhaul the limitations of single-component BBSc photocatalysts. This work aims to review recent studies on a new type of BBZSH photocatalysts for the treatment of contaminated water. Abstract
Semiconductor photocatalytic technology holds immense promise for converting sustainable solar energy into chemically storable energy, with significant applications in the realms of energy and the environment. However, the inherent issue of rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes hinders the performance of single photocatalysts. To overcome this challenge, the construction of 2D S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts emerges as an effective strategy. The deliberate design of dimensionality ensures a substantial interfacial area; while, the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism facilitates efficient charge separation and maximizes redox capabilities. This review commences with a fresh perspective on the charge transfer mechanism in S-scheme heterojunctions, followed by a comprehensive exploration of preparation methods and characterization techniques. Subsequently, the recent advancements in 2D S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are summarized. Notably, the mechanism behind activity enhancement is elucidated. Finally, the prospects for the development of 2D S-scheme photocatalysts are presented.

Abstract
Semiconductor-based step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions possess many merits toward mimicking natural photosynthesis. However, their applications for solar-to-chemical energy conversion are hindered by inefficient charge utilization and unsatisfactory surface reactivity. Herein, two synergistic protocols are demonstrated to overcome these limitations based on the construction of a hollow plasmonic p-metal-n S-scheme heterojunction photoreactor with spatially separated dual noble-metal-free cocatalysts. On one side, plasmonic Au, inserted into the heterointerfaces of CuS@ZnIn2 S4 core-shell nanoboxes, not only accelerates the transfer and recombination of useless charges, enabling a more thorough separation of useful ones for CO2 reduction and H2 O oxidation but also generates hot electrons and holes, respectively injects them into ZnIn2 S4 and CuS, further increasing the number of active carriers participating in redox reactions. On the other side, Fe(OH)x and Ti3 C2 cocatalysts, separately located on the CuS and ZnIn2 S4 surface, enrich the redox sites, adjust the reduction potential and pathway for selective CO2 -to-CH4 transformation, and balance the transfer and consumption of photocarriers. As expected, significantly enhanced activity and selectivity in CH4 production are achieved by the smart design along with nearly stoichiometric ratios of reduction and oxidation products. This study paves the way for optimizing artificial photosynthetic systems via rational interfacial channel introduction and surface cocatalyst modification.

Abstract
In the realm of photocatalysis, understanding the interface issues (solid/solid and solid/liquid) inherent in heterojunction at the atomic level is the ultimate for engineering an efficient photocatalyst. Herein, an electrophoretic deposition technique is adopted to synthesize BiOI/β-Bi2O3 heterojunction, exhibiting superior photocatalytic activity and stability in H2 evolution (91.5 μmol g-1 h-1) and H2O2 production (11.3 mg L-1 h-1). Combined with the experimental and computational results, a lower free energy of hydrogen evolution reaction (252.4 meV) has been observed contrast to BiOI and β-Bi2O3 samples. A carrier transfer process of like S-scheme heterojunction is proposed based on density of states (DOS) and carrier distribution calculations. The theoretical calculations illustrate the transition dipole moment, migration and accumulation of carrier in BiOI/β-Bi2O3 heterojunction. Subsequent ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) results of solid/liquid interface systems (BiOI/β-Bi2O3/H2O and β-Bi2O3/H2O) unravel the interface H2O (solvent) behaviors. The local aggregation of photo-generated electrons in BiOI/β-Bi2O3/H2O leads to a large potential drop, high proton migration rate and the steady electric double layer (EDL) structure compared to the β-Bi2O3/H2O, which facilitates the occurrence of photocatalytic reactions in solution. In addition to offering new insights into the hydrogen evolution and proton transfer in the EDL model and the association between the heterojunction effect and EDL structure, this work also introduces a novel design strategy for Bi-based heterojunctions.

Abstract
In this study, a new Z-scheme MgFe2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was successfully prepared by hydrothermal and wet ball milling process. The results of the study showed that after 90 min of visible light exposure, the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by 25%-MgFe2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was as high as 95.82%, and the highest photocatalytic rate (0.0281 min-1) was 4.61 and 3.43 times higher than that of pure Bi2WO6 (0.0061 min-1) and MgFe2O4 (0.0082 min-1), respectively. Furthermore, spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to provide additional evidence of the presence of a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism between MgFe2O4 and Bi2WO6. We investigated the effects of initial TCH concentration, pH, coexisting ions and different water sources on the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation of TCH in composite samples. The recovery experiments demonstrated that the MgFe2O4/Bi2WO6 composites had good stability and repeatability. A series of experimental results showed that 25%-MgFe2O4/Bi2WO6 had a larger specific surface area, better ultraviolet and visible absorbance, superior charge transfer and higher efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pair separation. This paper provides new ideas for the design and preparation of new Z-scheme heterojunctions and has great prospects for practical applications in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Inspired by the bifunctional phototherapy agents (PTAs), constructing compact PTAs with efficient photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) effects in the near-infrared (NIR-II) biowindow is crucial for high therapeutic efficacy. Herein, none-layered germanium (Ge) is transformed to layered Ge/germanium phosphide (Ge/GeP) structure, and a novel two-dimensional sheet-like compact S-scheme Ge/GeP in-plane heterostructure with a large extinction coefficient of 15.66 L/g cm-1 at 1,064 nm is designed and demonstrated. In addition to the outstanding photothermal effects, biocompatibility and degradability, type I and type II PDT effects are activated by a single laser. Furthermore, enhanced reactive oxygen species generation under longer wavelength NIR laser irradiation is achieved, and production of singlet oxygen and superoxide radical upon 1,064 nm laser irradiation is more than double that under 660 nm laser irradiation. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism between Ge and GeP, is demonstrated by photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy and electron spin resonance analysis. Thus, the obtained S-scheme Ge/GeP in-plane heterostructure shows synergistic therapeutic effects of PTT/PDT both in vitro and in vivo in the NIR-II biowindow and the novel nanoplatform with excellent properties has large clinical potential.

Abstract
The construction of heterojunction systems is an effective way to efficiently generate hydrogen by water photolysis. In this work, Ni-MOF (trimesic acid, (BTC)) and g-C3N4 (denoted as CN) were combined, and then Ni-MOF/CN was modified by 4-Methyl-5-vinyl thiazole (denoted as MVTh). Finally, CdS was loaded on the surface of Ni-MOF/CN/MVTh to prepare the photocatalyst Ni-MOF/g-C3N4/MVTh/CdS (denoted as Ni/CN/M/Cd) with a triangular closed-loop path heterojunction for the first time. As a photocatalyst without precious metal cocatalysts, Ni/CN/M/Cd displayed high H2 evolution (17.844 mmol·g-1·h-1) under an optimum CdS loading of 40 wt%. The H2 evolution rate was approximately 79 times that of Ni-MOF/CN and exceeded those of almost all catalysts based on MOF/CN in the literature. The triangular closed-loop heterojunction formed between Ni-MOF, g-C3N4, and CdS could realize the directional migration of photocarriers and significantly diminished the transfer resistance of carriers. The Ni2+ in Ni-MOF provided many cocatalytic sites for H2 evolution via g-C3N4 and CdS. Furthermore, charge carrier separation in Ni-MOF/CN/CdS improved after the innovative addition of MVTh. This study provides a reference for the construction of a closed-loop heterojunction system without precious metal cocatalysts.

Abstract
Photocatalytic H2 evolution is of prime importance in the energy crisis and in lessening environmental pollution. Adopting a single semiconductor as a photocatalyst remains a formidable challenge. However, the construction of an S-scheme heterojunction is a promising method for efficient water splitting. In this work, CdS nanoparticles were loaded onto NiS nanosheets to form CdS/NiS nanocomposites using hollow Ni(OH)2 as a precursor. The differences in the Fermi energy levels between the two components of CdS and NiS resulted in the formation of a built-in electric field in the nanocomposite. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the S-scheme charge transfer driven by the built-in electric field can accelerate the effective separation of photogenerated carriers, which is conducive to efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimized photocatalyst is 39.68 mmol·g-1 h-1, which is 6.69 times that of CdS under visible light. This work provides a novel strategy to construct effective photocatalysts to relieve the environmental and energy crisis.

Abstract
Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions have exhibited great potential in photocatalysis due to their extraordinary light harvesting and high redox capacities. However, inadequate S-scheme recombination of useless carriers in weak redox abilities increases the probability of their recombination with useful ones in strong redox capabilities. Herein, a versatile protocol is demonstrated to overcome this impediment based on the insertion of nano-piezoelectrics into the heterointerfaces of S-scheme heterojunctions. Under light excitation, the piezoelectric inserter promotes interfacial charge transfer and produces additional photocarriers to recombine with useless electrons and holes, ensuring a more thorough separation of powerful ones for CO2 reduction and H2 O oxidation. When introducing extra ultrasonic vibration, a piezoelectric polarization field is established, which allows efficient separation of charges generated by the embedded piezoelectrics and expedites their recombination with weak carriers, further increasing the number of strong ones participating in the redox reactions. Encouraged by the greatly improved charge utilization, significantly enhanced photocatalytic and piezophotocatalytic activities in CH4 , CO, and O2 production are achieved by the designed stacked catalyst. This work highlights the importance in strengthening the necessary charge recombination in S-scheme heterojunctions and presents an efficient and novel strategy to synergize photocatalysis and piezocatalysis for renewable fuels and value-added chemicals production.

Abstract
The dramatic rise in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere caused by the continuous use of carbon fuels continues to have a significant impact on environmental degradation and the disappearance of energy reserves. Past few years have seen a significant increase in the interest in photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction because of its ability to lower CO2 releases from the burning of fossil fuels while also producing fuels and important chemical products. Because of their excellent catalytic efficiency, great uniformity, lengthy charge diffusion layers and texture flexibility that enable accurate band gap and band line optimization, perovskite-based nanomaterials are perhaps the most advantageous among the numerous semiconductors proficient in accelerating CO2 conversion under visible light. Firstly, a brief insight into photocatalytic CO2 conversion mechanism and structural features of perovskites are discussed. Further the classification and selection of perovskites for Z and S-scheme heterojunctions and their role in photocatalytic CO2 reduction analysed. The efficient modification and engineering of heterojunctions via co-catalyst loading, morphology control and vacancy introduction have been comprehensively reviewed. Third, the state-of-the-art achievements of perovskite-based Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions are systematically summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges, bottlenecks and future perspectives are discussed to provide a pathway for applying perovskite-based heterojunctions for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract
Finding effective strategies to design efficient photocatalysts and decompose refractory organic compounds in wastewater is a challenging problem. Herein, by coupling element doping and constructing heterostructures, S-scheme CdS QDs/La-Bi2WO6 (CS/LBWO) photocatalysts are designed and synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. As a result, the RhB degradation efficiency of the optimized 5% CS/LBWO reached 99% within 70 min of illumination with excellent stability and recyclability. CS/LBWO shows improvement in the adsorption range of visible light and promotes electron-hole pair generation/migration/separation, attributing the superior degradation performance. The degradation RhB mechanism is proposed by a free radical capture experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance, and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry results, indicating that h+ and •O2 - play a significant role during four degradation processes: de-ethylation, chromophore cleavage, ring opening, and mineralization. Based on in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Mulliken electronegativity theory, and the work function results, the S-scheme heterojunction of CS/LBWO promotes the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and promotes the generation of reactive radicals. This work not only reports that 5% CS/LBWO is a promising photocatalyst for degradation experiments but also provides an approach to design advanced photocatalysts by coupling element doping and constructing heterostructures.

Abstract
The present study was done to investigate and compare the photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of two in situ Manganese doped ternary nanocomposites. The dual ternary hybrid systems comprised Mn-doped Ag2WO4 coupled with MoS2-GO and Mn-doped MoS2 coupled with Ag2WO4-GO. Both hierarchical alternate Mn-doped ternary heterojunctions formed efficient plasmonic catalysts for wastewater treatment. The novel nanocomposites were well-characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, HR-TEM, XPS, UV-VIS DRS, and PL techniques confirming the successful insertion of Mn+2 ions in respective host substrates. The bandgap of the ternary nanocomposites evaluated by the tauc plot showed them visible light-active nanocomposites. The photocatalytic ability of both Mn-doped coupled nanocomposites was investigated against the dye methylene blue. Both ternary nanocomposites showed excellent sunlight harvesting ability for dye degradation in 60 min. The maximum catalytic efficiency of both photocatalysts was obtained at a solution pH value of 8, photocatalyst dose and oxidant dose of 30 mg/100 mL and 1 mM for Mn-Ag2WO4/MoS2-GO, 50 mg/100 mL, 3 mM for Mn-MoS2/Ag2WO4-GO keeping IDC of 10 ppm for all photocatalysts. The nanocomposites showed excellent photocatalytic stability after five successive cycles. The response surface methodology was used as a statistical tool for the evaluation of the photocatalytic response of several interacting parameters for dye degradation by ternary composites. The antibacterial activity was determined by the inactivation of gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria by support-based doped ternary hybrids.

Abstract
Photocatalysis opens a new door to H2O2 formation via a low-cost, clean, mild, and sustainable process, which holds great promise for the next generation of massive H2O2 production. However, fast photogenerated electron-hole recombination and slow reaction kinetics are the main obstacles for its practical application. An effective solution is to construct the step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction, which remarkably promotes carrier separation and boosts the redox power for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production. Considering the superiority of S-scheme heterojunctions, this Perspective summarizes the recent advances of S-scheme photocatalysts for H2O2 production, including photocatalysts for building S-scheme heterojunctions, H2O2-production performance, and S-scheme photocatalytic mechanisms. Lastly, some prospects are given to motivate future research in this promising field, other promising strategies are provided to further improve H2O2 yields, and future research directions are suggested.

Abstract
Since the advent of photocatalytic technology, scientists have been searching for semiconductor materials with high efficiency in solar energy utilization and conversion to chemical energy. Recently, the development of quantum dot (QD) photocatalysts has attracted much attention because of their unique characteristics: small size, quantum effects, strong surface activity, and wide photoresponse range. Among ternary chalcogenide semiconductors, CuInS2 QDs are increasingly examined in the field of photocatalysis due to their high absorption coefficients, good matching of the absorption range with sunlight spectrum, long lifetimes of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and environmental sustainability. In this review paper, the structural and electronic properties, synthesis methods and various photocatalytic applications of CuInS2 QDs are systematically expounded. The current research status on the photocatalytic properties of materials based on CuInS2 QD is discussed combined with the existing modification approaches for the enhancement of their performances. Future challenges and new development opportunities of CuInS2 QDs in the field of photocatalysis are then prospected.

Abstract
In recent years, the threat to human health from bacteria in wastewater has attracted attention, and photocatalytic technology has emerged as a promising strategy for inactivating bacteria in water. Therefore, it is of great research value to develop a novel high-efficiency photocatalytic system with the visible light response. We successfully designed a double S-scheme heterojunction composite WO3/g-C3N4/BiOI (WCB) in this paper. The preparation of WCB composites was demonstrated by a series of characterizations, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The antibacterial effects of photocatalysts against representative Gram-negative strain Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive strain Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were tested under LED light irradiation. The novel photocatalyst presented excellent antibacterial properties, inactivating E. coli in 12 min and S. aureus in 20 min. The bacterial cell inactivation process was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Active species capture experiments show that the active species present in the WCB composites in the process of inactivating bacteria are h+, e-, OH and O2-. In conclusion, the synthesized double S-scheme WCB photocatalyst exhibits remarkable photocatalytic antibacterial activity under LED light and has broad prospects for practical application in water antibacterial treatment.

Abstract
Photocatalysis has long been considered a promising technology in green energy and environmental remediation. Since the poor performance of single components greatly limits the practical applications, the construction of heterostructures has become one of the most important technical means to improve the photocatalytic activity. In this work, based on the synthesis of oxygen-vacancy-rich ZnCr2O4 nanocrystals, ZnCr2O4/ZnIn2S4 composites are prepared via a low-temperature in situ growth, and the oxygen-vacancy-induced Z-scheme heterojunction is successfully constructed. The unique core-shell structure offers a tight interfacial contact, increases the specific surface area, and promotes the rapid charge transfer. Meanwhile, the oxygen-vacancy defect level not only enables wide-bandgap ZnCr2O4 to be excited by visible light enhancing the light absorption, but also provides necessary conditions for the construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions promoting charge separation and migration and allowing more reactive charges. The reaction rates of visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production (3.421 mmol g-1 h-1), hexavalent chromium reduction (0.124 min-1), and methyl orange degradation (0.067 min-1) of the composite reach 3.6, 6.5, and 8.4 times those of pure ZnIn2S4, and 15.8, 41.3, and 67.0 times those of pure ZnCr2O4, respectively. This work presents a novel option for constructing high-performance photocatalysts.

Abstract
Solar photocatalysis is the most ideal solution to global energy concerns and environmental deterioration nowadays. The heterojunction combination has become one of the most successful and effective strategies to design and manufacture composite photocatalysts. Heterojunction structures are widely documented to markedly improve the photocatalytic behavior of materials by enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, widening the light absorption range, and broadening redox potentials, which are attributed to the presence of both build-in electric fields at the interface of two different materials and the complementarity between different electron structures. So far, a large number of heterojunction photocatalytic materials have been reported and applied for water splitting, reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, environmental cleaning, etc. This review outlines the recent accomplishments in the design and modification of interface structures in heterojunction photocatalysts, aiming to provide some useful perspectives for future research in this field.

Abstract
Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) is a powerful technique for monitoring the electron transfer kinetics in photocatalysis. Several important works have successfully elucidated the electron transfer mechanism in heterojunction photocatalysts (HPs) using fs-TAS measurements, and thus a timely summary of recent advances is essential. This feature article starts with a thorough interpretation of the operating principle of fs-TAS equipment, and the fundamentals of the fs-TAS spectra. Subsequently, the applications of fs-TAS in analyzing the dynamics of photogenerated carriers in semiconductor/metal HPs, semiconductor/carbon HPs, semiconductor/semiconductor HPs, and multicomponent HPs are discussed in sequence. Finally, the significance of fs-TAS in revealing the ultrafast interfacial electron transfer process in HPs is summarized, and further research on the applications of fs-TAS in photocatalysis is proposed. This feature article will provide deep insight into the mechanism of the enhanced photocatalytic performance of HPs from the perspective of electron transfer kinetics.

Abstract
In this work, ZnIn2S4/g-C3N4 (ZIS/CN) composites were synthesized by in-situ growth method, which showed excellent photocatalytic activity in the degradation of tetracycline and hydrogen production from water under visible light irradiation. ZnIn2S4 quantum dots (ZIS QDs) tightly combined with sheet g-C3N4 (CN) to accelerate the separation and transportation of photogenerated charges for enhanced photocatalytic activity. Among the prepared nanocomposites, 20%ZnIn2S4 QDs/g-C3N4 (20%ZIS/CN) delivered the highest photocatalytic activity. After 120 min of irradiation, the degradation rate of tetracycline with 20%ZIS/CN was 54.82%, 3.1 times that of CN while the rate of hydrogen production was 75.2 μmol·g-1·h-1. According to the optical and electrochemical characterization analysis, it was concluded that the excellent photocatalytic activities of the composite materials were mainly due to the following three points: enhancement in light absorption capacity, acceleration in the charge transport, and reduction in the carrier recombination rate through the formation of S-scheme heterojunction in the composite system. The high photocatalytic activity of ZIS/CN composites provides a new idea to develop highly efficient photocatalysts.
