Fast and easy synthesis of silver, copper, and bimetallic nanoparticles on cellulose paper assisted by ultrasound

This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO3 and CuSO4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. In addition, it offers a straightforward alternative to scale up the production of MNPs on paper, ensuring an eco-friendly method.

Metallic core-shell nanoparticles for conductive coatings and printing

The review is focused on bimetallic nanoparticles composed of a core formed by low-cost metal having high electrical conductivity, such as Cu and Ni, and a protective shell composed of stable to oxidation noble metal such as Ag or Au. We present the chemical and physical approaches for synthesis of such particles, as well as the combination of the two, the stability to oxidation of core-shell nanoparticles at various conditions, and the formulation of conductive compositions and their application in conductive coatings and printed electronics.

Synthesis of Antibacterially ActiveSilver Nanoparticles by Galvanic Replacement on Magnesium in Solutions of Sodium Polyacrylate in an Ultrasound

“Green” synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by a galvanic replacement (GR) on magnesium in solutions of sodium polyacrylate (NaPA) under ultrasound (42 kHz) is reported. The mechanism of combined action of GR and ultrasound on the formation of nanoparticles is proposed. Synthesized solutions of AgNPs are characterized by an absorption maximum at 410 nm, the value of which does not depend on the concentrations of precursors (AgNO3 and NaPA) and the duration of the process. The dimensions of nanoparticles that have a spherical shape do not exceed 30 nm. With increasing concentration of surfactant, there is a tendency to decrease in size. The rate of synthesis of AgNPs increases almost in proportion to the concentration of AgNO3 in the solution, while the effect of NaPA concentration is negligible. The synthesized nanoparticles efficiently demonstrated a bactericide effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

"Green" Synthesis of Metallic Nanoparticles by Sonoelectrochemical and Sonogalvanic Replacement Methods

The main features of the “green” synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) by the sonoelectrochemical methods are manufacturability, environmental friendliness, and the possibility of controlling the geometry of the forming particles. The electrochemical reduction technique allows efficiently designing the metal nanoparticles and provides the control of the content of components of bimetallic nanoparticles, as well as minimizing the number of precursors in working solutions. Due to the generation of turbulence, microjets, and shock waves, ultrasound increases mass transfer and formation of radicals in aqueous solutions and, accordingly, accelerates the processes of nucleation and growth of MNPs. Therefore, this hybrid method, which combines electrolysis and ultrasound, has attracted the interest of researchers in the last two decades as one of the most promising techniques. The present work presents a short analysis of the reference literature on sonoelectrochemical synthesis of metallic and bimetallic nanoparticles. The main factors influencing the geometry of nanoparticles and their size distribution are analyzed. The use of pulsed ultrasound and pulsed current supply during sonoelectrochemical synthesis is especially effective in designing MNPs. Emphasis is placed on the role of surfactants in the formation of MNPs and sacrificial anodes in providing the algorithm: “anodic dissolution-electrochemical reduction of metal-nucleation and formation of МNPs.” It is noted that ultrasound allows synthesizing the MNPs and M₁M₂NPs during the galvanic replacement, and an analogy of the formation of nanoparticles by sonogalvanic replacement and sonoelectrochemical method is shown.

Flow-electrochemical synthesis of Prussian Blue based nanozyme 'artificial peroxidase'

We report on fully electrochemical flow-through synthesis of Prussian Blue based nanozymes defeating peroxidase in terms of more than 200 times higher catalytic rate constant (k = 6 × 10⁴ s^-1). Being reagentless, reproducible, simple and scalable, the proposed approach blazes new trails for the electrosynthesis of functional conductive and electroactive nanomaterials.

Antimicrobial Properties of the Ag, Cu Nanoparticle System

Microbes, including bacteria and fungi, easily form stable biofilms on many surfaces. Such biofilms have high resistance to antibiotics, and cause nosocomial and postoperative infections. The antimicrobial and antiviral behaviors of Ag and Cu nanoparticles (NPs) are well known, and possible mechanisms for their actions, such as released ions, reactive oxygen species (ROS), contact killing, the immunostimulatory effect, and others have been proposed. Ag and Cu NPs, and their derivative NPs, have different antimicrobial capacities and cytotoxicities. Factors, such as size, shape and surface treatment, influence their antimicrobial activities. The biomedical application of antimicrobial Ag and Cu NPs involves coating onto substrates, including textiles, polymers, ceramics, and metals. Because Ag and Cu are immiscible, synthetic AgCu nanoalloys have different microstructures, which impact their antimicrobial effects. When mixed, the combination of Ag and Cu NPs act synergistically, offering substantially enhanced antimicrobial behavior. However, when alloyed in Ag-Cu NPs, the antimicrobial behavior is even more enhanced. The reason for this enhancement is unclear. Here, we discuss these results and the possible behavior mechanisms that underlie them.

Synthesis, Properties, and Biological Applications of Metallic Alloy Nanoparticles

Metallic alloy nanoparticles are synthesized by combining two or more different metals. Bimetallic or trimetallic nanoparticles are considered more effective than monometallic nanoparticles because of their synergistic characteristics. In this review, we outline the structure, synthesis method, properties, and biological applications of metallic alloy nanoparticles based on their plasmonic, catalytic, and magnetic characteristics.

Calcium phosphate powder synthesis by out-of-phase pulsed sonoelectrochemistry

High aspect ratio calcium phosphate (CaP) nanorods were achieved by out-of-phase pulsed sonoelectrodeposition from electrolytic aqueous bath composed of calcium nitrate, ammonium dihydrogenophosphate and surfactant at pH of 4.9. The nature of CaP phases was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results reveal the predominantly presence of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA). The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyzes highlighted that the nanorods are polycristalline and have an aspect ratio up to 30.

A simple robust method of synthesis of copper-silver core-shell nano-particle: evaluation of its structural and chemical properties with anticancer potency

A simple method of synthesis of a stable bimetallic copper-silver nano-particle (CuAg-NP) was developed by successive reduction of Cu(NO₃)₂ and AgNO₃, using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent and gelatin and poly-vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as the capping agents. The round-shaped particles were of a core-shell structure with a core of Cu⁰ atoms surrounded by a shell of Ag⁰ atoms. The size and the mol. wt. of the NPs were (100 ± 10) nm and (820 ± 157) Kd, respectively; the particles were crystalline in nature and 90% of the precursors Cu(NO₃)₂ and AgNO₃ were converted to the NPs. The particles were more toxic to cancer cells than normal cells; the dose of the NPs (4-5 μg ml^-1), that killed about 75% of the different human cancer cell lines viz, HepG2 (liver cancer), A549 (lung cancer) and AGS (stomach cancer), killed only about 22.5% of the normal cell lines viz, WRL68 (liver) and WI38 (lung). Therefore, the NP may be developed as a potent anticancer drug in future. The more detailed study on the cytotoxicity of the CuAg-NP on the HepG2 cell line revealed that the particles caused cell cycle arrest in a G2/M phase, depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, translocation of phosphatidylserine residues from inner to outer leaflets of cell membrane and DNA degradation; these phenomena confirmed that the NP-induced cell death was apoptotic in nature.

CuAg@Ag Core-Shell Nanostructure Encapsulated by N-Doped Graphene as a High-Performance Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Development of a robust, cost-effective, and efficient catalyst is extremely necessary for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell applications. Herein, we reported a well-defined nanostructured catalyst of highly dispersed CuAg@Ag core-shell nanoparticle (NP)-encapsulated nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets (CuAg@Ag/N-GNS) exhibiting a superior catalytic activity toward ORR in alkaline medium. The synergistic effects produced from the unique properties of CuAg@Ag core-shell NPs and N-GNS made such a novel nanohybrid display a catalytic behavior comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C product. In particular, it demonstrated a much better stability and methanol tolerance than Pt/C under the same conditions. Because of its outstanding electrochemical performance and ease of synthesis, CuAg@Ag/N-GNS material was expected to be a promising low-cost catalyst for ORR in alkaline fuel cell applications.

A Simple Route to Synthesize Cu@Ag Core-Shell Bimetallic Nanoparticles and Their Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Properties

Water-dispersed Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with 15 nm-diameter Cu core and 5 nm-thick Ag shell can be synthesized by a facile one-step chemical reduction at room temperature without any protective atmosphere. To obtain a homogeneous Ag coating on Cu, the influence of [Cu/Ag] molar ratio was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that Ag formed a dense coating on the surface of Cu, and that phase-pure spherical Cu@Ag core-shell bimetallic NPs were prepared when the [Cu/Ag] molar ratio was between 1/0.5 and 1/0.75. The time dependence of ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra and XRD patterns of six-month stored Cu@Ag NPs showed that the as-prepared Cu@Ag NPs have a long-term antioxidant activity. Also, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals had a high stability and reproducibility for the substrates. Hence, the as-prepared Cu@Ag nanostructures can be used as an efficient substrate for SERS signals.

Continuous syntheses of Pd@Pt and Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles using microwave-assisted core particle formation coupled with galvanic metal displacement

Continuous synthesis of Pd@Pt and Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles was performed using flow processes including microwave-assisted Pd (or Cu) core-nanoparticle formation followed by galvanic displacement with a Pt (or Ag) shell. The core-shell structure and the nanoparticle size were confirmed using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) observation and EDS elemental mapping. The Pd@Pt nanoparticles with a particle size of 6.5 ± 0.6 nm and a Pt shell thickness of ca. 0.25 nm were synthesized with appreciably high Pd concentration (Pd 100 mM). This shell thickness corresponds to one atomic layer thickness of Pt encapsulating the Pd core metal. The particle size of core Pd was controlled by tuning the initial concentrations of Na2[PdCl4] and PVP. Core-shell Cu@Ag nanoparticles with a particle size of 90 ± 35 nm and an Ag shell thickness of ca. 3.5 nm were obtained using similar sequential reactions. Oxidation of the Cu core was suppressed by the coating of Cu nanoparticles with the Ag shell.

Facile synthesis of bimetallic Cu-Ag nanoparticles under microwave irradiation and their oxidation resistance

Air-stable bimetallic Cu-Ag nanoparticles in the range of 12-30 nm have been synthesized at gram scale by a facile alcohol reduction in the absence of surfactants with the assistance of microwave irradiation. The synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetry (TG). The stability of the bimetallic nanoparticles against oxidation was examined by TG and in situ temperature-programmed XRD analyses in the atmosphere. No oxidation of copper was confirmed by XRD after storing for longer than 6 months in the atmosphere at room temperature. No oxidation took place below 118 ° C and the Cu(200) diffraction peak decreased by only 7% after heating at 100 ° C for 30 min. The oxidation resistance has been ascribed to a Cu core-Ag shell structure, probably owing to the suppressive effect of Ag on the surface through the electronic interaction with Cu and a physical barrier of oxygen.

Silver deposition on a polymer substrate catalyzed by singly charged monodisperse copper nanoparticles

Aerosol deposition of singly charged monodisperse copper nanoparticles was used to catalytically activate a polymer substrate for electroless silver deposition. An ambient spark discharge was used to produce aerosol copper nanoparticles, and the particles were electrostatically classified at an equivalent mobility diameter of 10 nm, using a nanodifferential mobility analyzer. Deposition of the copper particles onto the surface of the substrate was enhanced by thermophoresis. The copper-deposited substrate was then immersed in a Ag(I) solution, resulting in the electroless deposition of silver (∼17 μm line width) on the previously deposited copper (∼12 μm line width, using a shadow mask with a 100 μm in width patterned stripe). The arithmetic mean roughness and electrical resistivity of the silver pattern were 44.7 nm and 7.9 μΩ cm, respectively, which showed an enhancement compared to those from the nonclassified copper particles (roughness = 162.2 nm, resistivity = 13.3 μΩ cm), because of a more-uniform copper deposition.

Directing substrate morphology via self-assembly: ligand-mediated scission of gallium-indium microspheres to the nanoscale

We have developed a facile method for the construction of liquid-phase eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) alloy nanoparticles. Particle formation is directed by molecular self-assembly and assisted by sonication. As the bulk liquid alloy is ultrasonically dispersed, fast thiolate self-assembly at the EGaIn interface protects the material against oxidation. The choice of self-assembled monolayer ligand directs the ultimate size reduction in the material; strongly interacting molecules induce surface strain and assist particle cleavage to the nanoscale. Transmission electron microscopy images and diffraction analyses reveal that the nanoscale particles are in an amorphous or liquid phase, with no observed faceting. The particles exhibit strong absorption in the ultraviolet (∼200 nm), consistent with the gallium surface plasmon resonance, but dependent on the nature of the particle ligand shell.
