Physical and chemical effects of acoustic cavitation in selected ultrasonic cleaning applications

Temperature-controlled microalgal biofilm detachment and harvesting assisted by ultrasonic from 3D porous substrates grafted with thermosensitive gels

Microalgae have been renowned as the most promising energy organism with significant potential in carbon fixation. In the large-scale cultivation of microalgae, the 3D porous substrate with higher specific surface area is favorable to microalgae adsorption and biofilm formation, whereas difficult for biofilm detachment and microalgae harvesting. To solve this contradiction, N-isopropylacrylamide, a temperature-responsive gels material, was grafted onto the inner surface of the 3D porous substrate to form temperature-controllable interface wettability. The interfacial free energy between microalgae biofilm and the substrates increased from -63.02 mJ/m2 to -31.89 mJ/m2 when temperature was lowered from 32 °C to 17 °C, weakening the adsorption capacity of cells to the surface, and making the biofilm detachment ratio increased to 50.8%. When further cooling the environmental temperature to 4 °C, the detachment capability of microalgae biofilm kept growing. 91.6% of the cells in the biofilm were harvesting from the 3D porous substrate. And the biofilm detached rate was up to 19.84 g/m2/h, realizing the temperature-controlled microalgae biofilm harvesting. But, microalgae growth results in the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which enhanced biofilm adhesion and made cell detachment more difficult. Thus, ultrasonic vibration was used to reinforce biofilm detachment. With the help of ultrasonic vibration, microalgae biofilm detached rate increased by 143.45% to 41.07 g/m2/h. These findings provide a solid foundation for further development of microalgae biofilm detachment and harvesting technology.

Multimode ultrasonic-assisted decontamination of fruits and vegetables: A review

Fruits and vegetables (F&V) are a significant part of our diet consumption. Microbial and pesticide residues are the predominant safety hazards of F&V consumption. Ordinary water washing has a very limited effect on removing microorganisms and pesticide residues and requires high water usage. Ultrasound, as an environmentally friendly technology, shows excellent potential for reducing microbial contamination and pesticide residue. This paper summarizes the research on ultrasound application in F&V washing, including the removal of microbial and pesticide residues and the comprehensive effect on their physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, multimode ultrasonic-assisted techniques like multi-frequency and sequential ultrasound, combined with novel and conventional methods, can enhance the ultrasound-based effect and be more effective and sustainable in preventing F&V from microbial contamination. Overall, this work explicitly establishes the background on the potential for ultrasound cleaning and disinfection in the food industry as a green, effective, and ultimate method of preventing foodborne illnesses.

High-performance activation of ozone by sonocavitation for BTEX degradation in water

This work presents a novel advanced oxidation process (AOP) for degradation of emerging organic pollutants - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEXs) in water. A comparative study was performed for sonocavitation assisted ozonation under 40-120 kHz and 80-200 kHz dual frequency ultrasounds (DFUS). Based on the obtained results, the combination of 40-120 kHz i.e., low-frequency US (LFDUS) with O3 exhibited excellent oxidation capacity degrading 99.37-99.69% of BTEXs in 40 min, while 86.09-91.76% of BTEX degradation was achieved after 60 min in 80-200 kHz i.e., high-frequency US (HFDUS) combined with O3. The synergistic indexes determined using degradation rate constants were found as 7.86 and 2.9 for LFDUS/O3 and HFDUS/O3 processes, respectively. The higher extend of BTEX degradation in both processes was observed at pH 6.5 and 10. Among the reactive oxygen species (ROSs), hydroxyl radicals (HO•) were found predominant according to scavenging tests, singlet oxygen also importantly contributed in degradation, while O2•- radicals had a minor contribution. Sulfate (SO42-) ions demonstrated higher inhibitory effect compared to chloride (Cl-) and carbonate (CO32-) ions in both processes. Degradation pathways of BTEX was proposed based on the intermediates identified using GC-MS technique.

A novel Ag-loaded 4 Å zeolite as an efficient catalyst for epoxidation of styrene

In this study, a novel Ag-loaded 4 Å zeolite was synthesized through the combined action of strong ultrasound and a high-voltage electrostatic field (the Z-Ag-UE) and its catalytic activity was evaluated in the epoxidation of styrene. The prepared catalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS, BET, TG, ICP-OES. The results showed that the silver evenly dispersed inside the octahedral 4 Å zeolite structure rather than being attached to the surface of the material like in the impregnation method, and this Ag-loaded 4 Å zeolite had a high surface area, uniform particle size distribution, and excellent high temperature thermal stability. The catalytic performance of the Ag-loaded 4 Å zeolite was investigated by varying the reaction conditions such as the amount of catalyst, temperature, and reaction time. Under optimized conditions, the Ag-loaded 4 Å zeolite showed high selectivity and conversion for the epoxidation of styrene, achieving a conversion rate of up to 98% and a selectivity of 94%. In particular, the catalyst had excellent recyclability and was reused more than fifteen times with the catalytic performance remaining unchanged. This method of loading metal prepared under external field conditions provides a new method and idea for future research in related fields.

Review on the impacts of external pressure on sonochemistry

The impact of hydrostatic pressure, commonly known as ambient or external pressure, on the phenomenon of sonochemistry and/or sonoluminescence has been extensively investigated through a multitude of experimental and computational studies, all of which have emphasized the crucial role played by this particular parameter. Numerous previous studies have successfully demonstrated the existence of an optimal static pressure for the occurrence of sonoluminescence and multi-bubble or single-bubble sonochemistry. However, despite these findings, a universally accepted value for this critical pressure has not yet been established. In addition, it has been found that the cavitation effect is completely inhibited when the static pressure is either too high or too low. This comprehensive review aims to delve into the primary experimental results and elucidate their significance in relation to hydrostatic pressure. We will then conduct an analysis of numerical calculations, focusing specifically on the influence of external pressure on single bubble sonochemistry. By delving into these calculations, we will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the experimental results and effectively interpret their implications.

The Evolution of Sonochemistry: From the Beginnings to Novel Applications

Sonochemistry is the use of ultrasonic waves in an aqueous medium, to generate acoustic cavitation. In this context, sonochemistry emerged as a focal point over the past few decades, starting as a manageable process such as a cleaning technique. Now, it is found in a wide range of applications across various chemical, physical, and biological processes, creating opportunities for analysis between these processes. Sonochemistry is a powerful and eco-friendly technique often called "green chemistry" for less energy use, toxic reagents, and residues generation. It is increasing the number of applications achieved through the ultrasonic irradiation (USI) method. Sonochemistry has been established as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative compared to traditional industrial methods. It promotes scientific and social well-being, offering non-destructive advantages, including rapid processes, improved process efficiency, enhanced product quality, and, in some cases, the retention of key product characteristics. This versatile technology has significantly contributed to the food industry, materials technology, environmental remediation, and biological research. This review is created with enthusiasm and focus on shedding light on the manifold applications of sonochemistry. It delves into this technique's evolution and current applications in cleaning, environmental remediation, microfluidic, biological, and medical fields. The purpose is to show the physicochemical effects and characteristics of acoustic cavitation in different processes across various fields and to demonstrate the extending application reach of sonochemistry. Also to provide insights into the prospects of this versatile technique and demonstrating that sonochemistry is an adapting system able to generate more efficient products or processes.

A Review of Ultrasonic Treatment in Mineral Flotation: Mechanism and Recent Development

Ultrasonic treatment has been widely used in the mineral flotation process due to its advantages in terms of operational simplicity, no secondary pollutant formation, and safety. Currently, many studies have reported the effect of ultrasonic treatment on mineral flotation and shown excellent flotation performance. In this review, the ultrasonic mechanisms are classified into three types: the transient cavitation effect, stable cavitation effect, and acoustic radiation force effect. The effect of the main ultrasonic parameters, including ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on mineral flotation are discussed. This review highlights the uses of the application of ultrasonic treatment in minerals (such as the cleaning effect, ultrasonic corrosion, and desulfuration), flotation agents (such as dispersion and emulsification and change in properties and microstructure of pharmaceutical solution), and slurry (such formation of microbubbles and coalescence). Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of using ultrasonic approaches for mineral flotation. The findings demonstrate that the application of the ultrasonic effect yields diverse impacts on flotation, thereby enabling the regulation of flotation behavior through various treatment methods to enhance flotation indices and achieve the desired objectives.

Exploring viscosity influence mechanisms on coating removal: Insights from single cavitation bubble behaviours in low-frequency ultrasonic settings

The role of acoustic cavitation in various surface cleaning disciplines is important. However, the physical mechanisms underlying acoustic cavitation-induced surface cleansing are poorly understood. This is due to the combination of microscopic and ultrashort timescales associated with the dynamics of acoustic cavitation bubbles. Here, we have precisely controlled single-bubble cavitation in both space and time. Ultrasonic excitation leads to the cavitation of generated single bubbles. A synchronous ultrafast photomicrographic system simultaneously records the dynamics of single acoustic cavitation bubbles (SACBs) and the cleaning process of the nearby surface in liquids with varying viscosities. Finally, we analysed the correlation between bubble dynamics and surface cleaning situations. The differences in the typical dynamic characteristics of the bubbles during collapse in liquids with varying viscosities reveal two main mechanisms underlying surface cleaning by acoustic cavitation, which are respective the Laplace pressure during the bubble's movement and liquid jets during bubble collapse. Our study provides a better physical understanding of the ultrasonic cleaning process based on acoustic cavitation, and will help to optimize and facilitate the applications of surface cleaning, especially for the cleaning of substrates with tightly attached dirt.

Influence of interactions between bubbles on physico-chemical effects of acoustic cavitation

Ultrasound technology has been extensively used as one of the efficient and economic methodology to achieve the desired outcomes in many applications by harnessing the physico-chemical effects of acoustic cavitation. However, the cavitation-associated effects, primarily determined by the oscillatory dynamics of cavitation bubbles, are considerably complex and still remain poorly understood. The main objective of this study was to perform a numerical analysis of the acoustic cavitation (i.e., the cavitation dynamics, the resultant temperature, pressure and chemical yields within collapsing bubbles), particularly focusing on the influence of the interactions between bubbles. A comprehensive model was developed to simulate the acoustic cavitation dynamics via combining the influences of mass transfer, heat conduction and chemical reactions as well as the interaction effects between bubbles. The results demonstrated that only the large bubble exerts a greater impact on the small one in a two-bubble system. Specifically, within parameter ranges covered this study, there are noticeable decreases in the expansion ratio of the small bubble, the resultant temperature, pressure and molar yields of free radicals, hence weakening the cavitation intensity and cavitation- associated physico-chemical effects. Moreover, the influences of the interactions between bubbles were further assessed quantitatively under various parameters, such as the ultrasound amplitude PA and frequency f, the distance between bubbles d0, the initial radius of the large bubble R20, as well as the liquid properties (e.g., surface tension σ and viscosity μ). It was found that the suppression effect can be amplified when subjected to ultrasound with an increased PA and/or a decreased f, probably due to a stronger cavitation intensity under this condition. Additionally, the suppression effect is also enhanced with a decrease in d0, σ and μ, but with R20 increasing. This study can contribute to deepening knowledge about acoustic cavitation and the resultant physical and/or chemical effects, potentially further facilitating the ultrasound-assisted various applications involving acoustic cavitation.

Degradation of organic pollutants accompanied by the ultrasonic separation of the spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials

Since the majority of valuable components in spent lithium-ion batteries, such as lithium, exists in the electrode materials, common studies focused on the treatment of the cathode materials, which ignored the harm of residual electrolyte. The cavitation and thermal effects produced by ultrasonic can not only be used for the separation of electrode materials, but also have a wide range of applications in the field of sewage pollutant degradation. This work used ultrasonic to treat simulated electrolyte (propylene carbonate (PC)) solution of spent lithium-ion batteries, explored the effect of ultrasonic power, the addition amount of H2O2 solution (30 wt%) and reaction temperature on the degradation of electrolyte, and analysed the ultrasonic degradation reaction from the perspective of reaction kinetics. And the synchronous experiment of cathode material separation and electrolyte degradation was conducted under the optimal conditions. The results showed that the highest degradation efficiency of PC in the electrolyte was 83.08% under the condition of ultrasonic power of 900 W, the addition of H2O2 solution (30 wt%) of 10.2 mL, reaction temperature of 120°C and reaction time of 120 minutes, and the separation efficiency was 100%. This work reduced the environmental and health risks in the cathode material separation process and was conducive to the green development of spent lithium-ion battery recycling technology.

Recent developments in ultrasound approach for preservation of animal origin foods

Ultrasound is a contemporary non-thermal technology that is currently being extensively evaluated for its potential to preserve highly perishable foods, while also contributing positively to the economy and environment. There has been a rise in the demand for food products that have undergone minimal processing or have been subjected to non-thermal techniques. Livestock-derived food products, such as meat, milk, eggs, and seafood, are widely recognized for their high nutritional value. These products are notably rich in proteins and quality fats, rendering them particularly vulnerable to oxidative and microbial spoilage. Ultrasound has exhibited significant antimicrobial properties, as well as the ability to deactivate enzymes and enhance mass transfer. The present review centers on the production and classification of ultrasound, as well as its recent implementation in the context of livestock-derived food products. The commercial applications, advantages, and limitations of the subject matter are also subject to scrutiny. The review indicated that ultrasound technology can be effectively utilized in food products derived from livestock, leading to favorable outcomes in terms of prolonging the shelf life of food while preserving its nutritional, functional, and sensory attributes. It is recommended that additional research be conducted to investigate the effects of ultrasound processing on nutrient bioavailability and extraction. The implementation of hurdle technology can effectively identify and mitigate the lower inactivation of certain microorganisms or vegetative cells.

Sono-processes: Emerging systems and their applicability within the (bio-)medical field

Sonochemistry, although established in various fields, is still an emerging field finding new effects of ultrasound on chemical systems and are of particular interest for the biomedical field. This interdisciplinary area of research explores the use of acoustic waves with frequencies ranging from 20 kHz to 1 MHz to induce physical and chemical changes. By subjecting liquids to ultrasonic waves, sonochemistry has demonstrated the ability to accelerate reaction rates, alter chemical reaction pathways, and change physical properties of the system while operating under mild reaction conditions. It has found its way into diverse industries including food processing, pharmaceuticals, material science, and environmental remediation. This review provides an overview of the principles, advancements, and applications of sonochemistry with a particular focus on the domain of (bio-)medicine. Despite the numerous benefits sonochemistry has to offer, most of the research in the (bio-)medical field remains in the laboratory stage. Translation of these systems into clinical practice is complex as parameters used for medical ultrasound are limited and toxic side effects must be minimized in order to meet regulatory approval. However, directing attention towards the applicability of the system in clinical practice from the early stages of research holds significant potential to further amplify the role of sonochemistry in clinical applications.

A mechanistic study on efficient room temperature sonocolloidal obtainment of SrTiO3 nanocrystals

Titanate-based perovskite powders are the most widely used materials for fabrication of multilayered ceramic capacitors and thus are of significant importance. They have been synthesized by two approaches including solid-state and wet chemical processing methods. Synthesis temperature, cost of preparation and quality of synthesized powders are key factors favoring the process. Here, a new ultrasound-assisted precipitation approach is introduced which is able to obtain the quality perovskite nanocrystals such as strontium titanate, barium titanate and so on at room temperature. The obtained powder products were characterized by DTA/TGA, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDAX and TEM. The results indicate the room temperature formation of highly pure monosized spherical nanoscale crystals which are loosely agglomerated in nature. It is tried to add the science, mechanism involved in the synthesis and its reaction pattern to the literature along with discussing the cause of low temperature obtainment of the perovskite powder products. The approach described in the current work has the capability to be a general strategy for the synthesis of perovskite materials and essential potentials for large-scale production purposes as it is facile, low temperature and cost-effective.

Sonoactivated Nanomaterials: A potent armament for wastewater treatment

The world is currently facing a critical issue of water pollution, with wastewater being a major contributor. It comes from different types of pollutants, including industrial, medical, agricultural, and domestic. Effective treatment of wastewater requires efficient degradation of pollutants and carcinogens prior to discharge. Commonly used methods for wastewater treatment include filtration, adsorption, biodegradation, advanced oxidation processes, and Fenton oxidation, among others.The sonochemical effect refers to the decomposition, oxidation, reduction, and other reactions of pollutant molecules in wastewater upon ultrasound activation, achieving pollutants removal. Furthermore, the micro-flow effect generated by ultrasonic waves creates tiny bubbles and eddies. This significantly increases the contact area and exchange speed of pollutants and dissolved oxygen, thereby accelerating pollutant degradation. Currently, ultrasonic-assisted technology has emerged as a promising approach due to its strong oxidation ability, simple and cheap equipments, and minimal secondary pollution. However, the use of ultrasound in wastewater treatment has some limitations, such as high energy consumption, lengthy treatment time, limited water treatment capacity, stringent water quality requirements, and unstable treatment effects. To address these issues, the combination of enhanced ultrasound with nanotechnology is proposed and has shown great potential in wastewater treatment. Such a combination can greatly improve the efficiency of ultrasonic oxidation, resulting in an improved performance of wastewater purification. This article presents recent progress in the development of sonoactivated nanomaterials for enhanced wastewater disposal. Such nanomaterials are systematically classified and discussed. Potential challenges and future prospects of this emerging technology are also highlighted.

The effect of the irrigant activation protocol on postoperative pain in maxillary incisors with asymptomatic apical periodontitis: A three-arm randomized clinical trial

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to compare the effects of three irrigation activation systems (IAS) on postoperative pain (PP) in activating three final irrigants: sodium hypochlorite 5.25%, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid 17%, and chlorhexidine 2%.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This parallel randomized clinical trial included referred patients with asymptomatic large-sized apical lesion incisors. A standard method was followed in the canal cleaning and shaping for all included patients in the study. Then, the patients were randomly assigned (1:1 allocation) into three groups: G1 (n = 20) with passive ultrasonic irrigation activation; G2 (n = 20) with XP-Endo Finisher file activation; and G3 (n = 20) with diode laser (810 nm) activation. PP was estimated in all groups using a visual analog scale after 1, 3, 7, and 14 days of treatment. Comparisons between the groups were made using the Kruskal-Wallis test, whereas the Mann-Whitney U test was used in the pairwise comparisons.

RESULTS

Sixty patients were followed-up in this trial. There were significant differences between the groups in terms of PP After 1, 3, and 7 days of treatment (p = 0.002, p = 0.017, and p = 0.006, respectively). On the first day of treatment, G3 showed the lowest PP compared with G1 and G2 (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively). On the third day of treatment, G3 showed less PP compared with G2 (p = 0.005). On the seventh day of treatment, G2 showed the highest PP compared with G1 and G3 (p = 0.012 and p = 0.003, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

The XP-Endo Finisher file caused the highest PP level especially in the next day and 3 days of the treatment, whereas the diode laser had the lowest PP level during the first week of treatment. It is noteworthy that PP disappeared completely after 2 weeks of treatment with all three IASs.

Water treatment by cavitation: Understanding it at a single bubble - bacterial cell level

Cavitation is a potentially useful phenomenon accompanied by extreme conditions, which is one of the reasons for its increased use in a variety of applications, such as surface cleaning, enhanced chemistry, and water treatment. Yet, we are still not able to answer many fundamental questions related to efficacy and effectiveness of cavitation treatment, such as: "Can single bubbles destroy contaminants?" and "What precisely is the mechanism behind bubble's cleaning power?". For these reasons, the present paper addresses cavitation as a tool for eradication and removal of wall-bound bacteria at a fundamental level of a single microbubble and a bacterial cell. We present a method to study bubble-bacteria interaction on a nano- to microscale resolution in both space and time. The method allows for accurate and fast positioning of a single microbubble above the individual wall-bound bacterial cell with optical tweezers and triggering of a violent microscale cavitation event, which either results in mechanical removal or destruction of the bacterial cell. Results on E. coli bacteria show that only cells in the immediate vicinity of the microbubble are affected, and that a very high likelihood of cell detachment and cell death exists for cells located directly under the center of a bubble. Further details behind near-wall microbubble dynamics are revealed by numerical simulations, which demonstrate that a water jet resulting from a near-wall bubble implosion is the primary mechanism of wall-bound cell damage. The results suggest that peak hydrodynamic forces as high as 0.8 μN and 1.2 μN are required to achieve consistent E. coli bacterial cell detachment or death with high frequency mechanical perturbations on a nano- to microsecond time scale. Understanding of the cavitation phenomenon at a fundamental level of a single bubble will enable further optimization of novel water treatment and surface cleaning technologies to provide more efficient and chemical-free processes.

Inactivation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and retardation of quality loss in oyster (Crassostrea gigas) by ultrasound processing during storage

The health problems caused by foodborne pathogens of raw oysters have been widely concerned. Traditional heating methods tend to lead the loss of the original nutrients and flavors, in this study, the nonthermal ultrasound technology was applied to inactivate Vibrio parahaemolyticus on raw oysters, and the retardation effects on microbial growth and quality loss of oysters stored at 4 ℃ after ultrasonic treatment were also investigated. After treated by 7.5 W/mL ultrasound for 12.5 min, the Vibrio parahaemolyticus in oysters was reduced by 3.13 log CFU/g. By measuring total aerobic bacteria and total volatile base nitrogen, the growth trend after ultrasonic treatment was delayed compared with heat treatment, and the shelf life of oysters was prolonged. At the same time, ultrasonic treatment delayed the changes of color difference and lipid oxidation of oysters during cold storage. Texture analysis showed that ultrasonic treatment helped maintain the good textural structure of oysters. Histological section analysis also demonstrated that muscle fibers were still tightly packed after ultrasonic treatment. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) illustrated that the water in the oysters was well maintained after ultrasonic treatment. In addition, gas chromatograph - ion mobility spectrometer (GC-IMS) showed that ultrasound treatment could better preserve the flavor of oysters during cold storage. Therefore, it is believed that ultrasound can inactivate foodborne pathogens of raw oysters and keep its freshness and original taste better during storage.

Numerical investigation on acoustic cavitation characteristics of an air-vapor bubble: Effect of equation of state for interior gases

The cavitation dynamics of an air-vapor mixture bubble with ultrasonic excitation can be greatly affected by the equation of state (EOS) for the interior gases. To simulate the cavitation dynamics, the Gilmore-Akulichev equation was coupled with the Peng-Robinson (PR) EOS or the Van der Waals (vdW) EOS. In this study, the thermodynamic properties of air and water vapor predicted by the PR and vdW EOS were first compared, and the results showed that the PR EOS gives a more accurate estimation of the gases within the bubble due to the less deviation from the experimental values. Moreover, the acoustic cavitation characteristics predicted by the Gilmore-PR model were compared to the Gilmore-vdW model, including the bubble collapse strength, the temperature, pressure and number of water molecules within the bubble. The results indicated that a stronger bubble collapse was predicted by the Gilmore-PR model rather than the Gilmore-vdW model, with higher temperature and pressure, as well as more water molecules within the collapsing bubble. More importantly, it was found that the differences between both models increase at higher ultrasound amplitudes or lower ultrasound frequencies while decreasing as the initial bubble radius and the liquid parameters (e.g., surface tension, viscosity and temperature of the surrounding liquid) increase. This study might offer important insights into the effects of the EOS for interior gases on the cavitation bubble dynamics and the resultant acoustic cavitation-associated effects, contributing to further optimization of its applications in sonochemistry and biomedicine.

High-Thermal-Conductivity and High-Fluidity Heat Transfer Emulsion with 89 wt % Suspended Liquid Metal Microdroplets

Colloidal suspensions of thermally conductive particles in a carrier fluid are considered promising heat transfer fluids for various thermal energy transfer applications, such as transportation, plants, electronics, and renewable energy systems. The thermal conductivity (k) of the particle-suspended fluids can be improved substantially by increasing the concentration of conductive particles above a "thermal percolation threshold," which is limited because of the vitrification of the resulting fluid at the high particle loadings. In this study, eutectic Ga-In liquid metal (LM) was employed as a soft high-k filler dispersed as microdroplets at high loadings in paraffin oil (as a carrier fluid) to produce an emulsion-type heat transfer fluid with the combined advantages of high thermal conductivity and high fluidity. Two types of the LM-in-oil emulsions, which were produced via the probe-sonication and rotor-stator homogenization (RSH) methods, demonstrated significant improvements in k, i.e., Δk ∼409 and ∼261%, respectively, at the maximum investigated LM loading of 50 vol % (∼89 wt %), attributed to the enhanced heat transport via high-k LM fillers above the percolation threshold. Despite the high filler loading, the RSH-produced emulsion retained remarkably high fluidity, with a relatively low viscosity increase and no yield stress, demonstrating its potential as a circulatable heat transfer fluid.

Review of the design of power ultrasonic generator for piezoelectric transducer

The power ultrasonic generator (PUG) is the core device of power ultrasonic technology (PUT), and its performance determines the application of this technology in biomedicine, semiconductor, aerospace, and other fields. With the high demand for sensitive and accurate dynamic response in power ultrasonic applications, the design of PUG has become a hot topic in academic and industry. However, the previous reviews cannot be used as a universal technical manual for industrial applications. There are many technical difficulties in establishing a mature production system, which hinder the large-scale application of PUG for piezoelectric transducers. To enhance the performance of the dynamic matching and power control of PUG, the studies in various PUT applications have been reviewed in this article. Initially, the demand design covering the piezoelectric transducer application and parameter requirements for ultrasonic and electrical signals is overall summarized, and these parameter requirements have been recommended as the technical indicators of developing the new PUG. Then the factors affecting the power conversion circuit design are analyzed systematically to realize the foundational performance improvement of PUG. Furthermore, advantages and limitations of key control technologies have been summarized to provide some different ideas on how to realize automatic resonance tracking and adaptive power adjustment, and to optimize the power control and dynamic matching control. Finally, several research directions of PUG in the future have been prospected.

Research on synergistic erosion by cavitation and sediment: A review

Sediment erosion frequently occurs in areas with high incidences of cavitation. The collaborative impact of abrasion and cavitation presents a host of challenges, threats, and damages to hydraulic engineering. However, little is known about the synergistic wear mechanism, and research conclusions remain inconsistent. In this work, relevant studies on synergistic erosion have been collected, classified, and analyzed. Presently, research on synergistic wear primarily operates at the macro and micro levels. The microscopic level enables the visualization and quantification of the process by which particles gain momentum from bubbles, the trajectory of particle acceleration, and the mechanism that triggers strong interactions between bubble-particle. At the macro level, erosion is understood as the summation of damage effects on the wall that is caused by the interaction between a plethora of bubbles of varying scales and numerous particles. The synergistic bubble-particle effect is reflected in the dual inhibiting or promoting mechanism. Furthermore, while numerical simulations could be realized by coupling cavitation, multiphase flow, and erosion models, their accuracy is not infallible. In the future, the dual role of particles, and particles driven by micro-jets or shock waves should be fully considered when establishing a combined erosion model. In addition, enhancing the influence of flow field and boundary parameters around bubbles and utilizing FSI would improve the predictive accuracy of erosion location and erosion rate. This work helps to elucidate the combined wear mechanism of hydraulic machinery components in sediment-laden flow environments and provides a theoretical basis for the design, manufacture, processing, and maintenance of hydraulic machinery.

Effects of medium viscoelasticity on bubble collapse strength of interacting polydisperse bubbles

Due to its physical and/or chemical effects, acoustic cavitation plays a crucial role in various emerging applications ranging from advanced materials to biomedicine. The cavitation bubbles usually undergo oscillatory dynamics and violent collapse within a viscoelastic medium, which are closely related to the cavitation-associated effects. However, the role of medium viscoelasticity on the cavitation dynamics has received little attention, especially for the bubble collapse strength during multi-bubble cavitation with the complex interactions between size polydisperse bubbles. In this study, modified Gilmore equations accounting for inter-bubble interactions were coupled with the Zener viscoelastic model to simulate the dynamics of multi-bubble cavitation in viscoelastic media. Results showed that the cavitation dynamics (e.g., acoustic resonant response, nonlinear oscillation behavior and bubble collapse strength) of differently-sized bubbles depend differently on the medium viscoelasticity and each bubble is affected by its neighboring bubbles to a different degree. More specifically, increasing medium viscosity drastically dampens the bubble dynamics and weakens the bubble collapse strength, while medium elasticity mainly affects the bubble resonance at which the bubble collapse strength is maximum. Differently-sized bubbles can achieve resonances and even subharmonic resonances at high driving acoustic pressures as the elasticity changes to certain values, and the resonance frequency of each bubble increases with the elasticity increasing. For the interactions between the size polydisperse bubbles, it indicated that the largest bubble generally has a dominant effect on the dynamics of smaller ones while in turn it is almost unaffected, exhibiting a pattern of destructive and constructive interactions. This study provides a valuable insight into the acoustic cavitation dynamics of multiple interacting polydisperse bubbles in viscoelastic media, which may offer a potential of controlling the medium viscoelasticity to appropriately manipulate the dynamics of multi-bubble cavitation for achieving proper cavitation effects according to the desired application.

Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted approach for synthesizing a highly stable biocompatible bismuth-coated iron oxide nanoparticles using a face-centered central composite design

The incorporation of additional functional groups such as bismuth nanoparticles (Bi NPs) into magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) is critical for their properties modification, stabilization, and multi-functionalization in biomedical applications. In this work, ultrasound has rapidly modified iron oxide (Fe3O4) NPs via incorporating their surface through coating with Bi NPs, creating unique Fe3O4@Bi composite NPs. The Fe3O4@Bi nanocomposites were synthesized and statistically optimized using an ultrasonic probe and response surface methodology (RSM). A face-centered central composite design (FCCD) investigated the effect of preparation settings on the stability, size, and size distribution of the nanocomposite. Based on the numerical desirability function, the optimized preparation parameters that influenced the responses were determined to be 40 ml, 5 ml, and 12 min for Bi concentration, sodium borohydride (SBH) concentration, and sonication time, respectively. It was found that the sonication time was the most influential factor in determining the responses. The predicted values for the zeta potential, hydrodynamic size, and polydispersity index (PDI) at the highest desirability solution (100%) were -45 mV, 122 nm, and 0.257, while their experimental values at the optimal preparation conditions were -47.1 mV, 125 nm, and 0.281, respectively. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) result shows that the ultrasound efficiently stabilized and functionalized Fe3O4NPs following modification to Fe3O4@Bi NPs, improved the zeta potential value from -33.5 to -47.1 mV, but increased the hydrodynamic size from 98 to 125 nm. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) validated the elemental compositions and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the presence of Sumac (Rhus coriaria) compounds in the composition of the nanocomposites. The stability and biocompatibility of Fe3O4@Bi NPs were improved by using the extract solution of the Sumacedible plant. Other physicochemical results revealed that Fe3O4NPs and Fe3O4@Bi NPs were crystalline, semi-spherical, and monodisperse with average particle sizes of 11.7 nm and 19.5 nm, while their saturation magnetization (Ms) values were found to be 132.33 emu/g and 92.192 emu/g, respectively. In vitro cytotoxicity of Fe3O4@Bi NPs on the HEK-293 cells was dose- and time-dependent. Based on our findings, the sonochemical approach efficiently produced (and RSM accurately optimized) an extremely stable, homogeneous, and biocompatible Fe3O4@Bi NPs with multifunctional potential for various biomedical applications.

Sonophotocatalysis with Photoactive Nanomaterials for Wastewater Treatment and Bacteria Disinfection

Sonophotocatalysis is described as a combination of two individual processes of photocatalysis and sonocatalysis. It has proven to be highly promising in degrading dissolved contaminants in wastewaters as well as bacteria disinfection applications. It eliminates some of the main disadvantages observed in each individual technique such as high costs, sluggish activity, and prolonged reaction times. The review has accomplished a critical analysis of sonophotocatalytic reaction mechanisms and the effect of the nanostructured catalyst and process modification techniques on the sonophotocatalytic performance. The synergistic effect between the mentioned processes, reactor design, and the electrical energy consumption has been discussed due to their importance when implementing this novel technology in practical applications, such as real industrial or municipal wastewater treatment plants. The utilization of sonophotocatalysis in disinfection and inactivation of bacteria has also been reviewed. In addition, we further suggest improvements to promote this technology from the lab-scale to large-scale applications. We hope this up-to-date review will advance future research in this field and push this technology toward widespread adoption and commercialization.

Ultrasound Technology as Inactivation Method for Foodborne Pathogens: A Review

An efficient microbiological decontamination protocol is required to guarantee safe food products for the final consumer to avoid foodborne illnesses. Ultrasound and non-thermal technology combinations represent innovative methods adopted by the food industry for food preservation and safety. Ultrasound power is commonly used with a frequency between 20 and 100 kHz to obtain an “exploit cavitation effect”. Microbial inactivation via ultrasound derives from cell wall damage, the oxidation of intracellular amino acids and DNA changing material. As an inactivation method, it is evaluated alone and combined with other non-thermal technologies. The evidence shows that ultrasound is an important green technology that has a good decontamination effect and can improve the shelf-life of products. This review aims to describe the applicability of ultrasound in the food industry focusing on microbiological decontamination, reducing bacterial alterations caused by food spoilage strains and relative foodborne intoxication/infection.

Recent trends in the applications of sonochemical reactors as an advanced oxidation process for the remediation of microbial hazards associated with water and wastewater: A critical review

Water is one of the major sources that spread human diseases through contamination with bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms. This review focuses on microbial hazards as they are often present in water and wastewater and cause various human diseases. Among the currently used disinfection methods, sonochemical reactors (SCRs) that produce free radicals combined with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received significant attention from the scientific community. Also, this review discussed various types of cavitation reactors, such as acoustic cavitation reactors (ACRs) utilizing ultrasonic energy (UE), which had been widely employed, involving AOPs for treating contaminated waters. Besides ACRs, hydrodynamic cavitation reactors (HCRs) also effectively destroy and deactivate microorganisms to varying degrees. Cavitation is the fundamental phenomenon responsible for initiating many sonochemical reactions in liquids. Bacterial degradation occurs mainly due to the thinning of microbial membranes, local warming, and the generation of free radicals due to cavitation. Over the years, although extensive investigations have focused on the antimicrobial effects of UE (ultrasonic energy), the primary mechanism underlying the cavitation effects in the disinfection process, inactivation of microbes, and chemical reactions involved are still poorly understood. Therefore, studies under different conditions often lead to inconsistent results. This review investigates and compares other mechanisms and performances from greener and environmentally friendly sonochemical techniques to the remediation of microbial hazards associated with water and wastewater. Finally, the energy aspects, challenges, and recommendations for future perspectives have been provided.

Numerical investigation of two-microbubble collapse and cell deformation in an ultrasonic field

Two-microbubble collapse near a spherical cell in an ultrasonic field is numerically analyzed by extending a level-set method for compressible multiphase flows with bubble and cell multiple interfaces. Computations performed with different bubble-bubble distances and size ratios demonstrate various bubble-bubble interactions, such as bubble coalescence, bubble repulsion and attraction, jet penetration into the bubble, and jet collision. The interactions between collapsing bubbles are found to produce strong liquid jet formation and result in significant cell deformation compared to single-bubble collapse. The optimal bubble-bubble distance and size ratio for cell deformation are presented via contour maps based on extensive computations. The influences of the ultrasonic amplitude and frequency on cell deformation are further investigated.

Theoretical investigation on resonance characteristics of a vapor bubble based on Laplace transform method

In the present paper, resonance characteristics of the vapor bubble oscillating in an acoustic field are investigated analytically. The analytical solution of the non-dimensional perturbation of the instantaneous bubble radius during the transient process in the initial oscillation stage is explicitly obtained and physically analyzed at the resonance situation based on the Laplace transform method. And the typical oscillation behaviors obtained from the analytical solution are thoroughly exhibited and analyzed in the time and frequency domains. In addition, the corresponding oscillation behaviors at the non-resonance situation are also investigated for the purpose of comparisons. Through our investigation, several essential conclusions can be drawn as follows: (1) The analytical solution of the non-dimensional perturbation of the instantaneous bubble radius can be divided into four terms according to the physical meaning. Among them, it is the term related to the acoustic field that causes the progressively violent bubble oscillation. (2) The vapor bubble with a smaller equilibrium radius could respond faster and more significantly to the acoustic field during the oscillation. (3) The bubble oscillation characteristics always exhibit significant differences at the resonance and non-resonance situations in both the time and frequency domains, even if the difference between the natural frequency of the oscillating vapor bubble and the angular frequency of the acoustic field is greatly small.

Green Copolymers and Nanocomposites from Myrcene and Limonene Using Algerian Nano-Clay as Nano-Reinforcing Filler

In this work, we report a new facile method for the preparation of myrcene-limonene copolymers and nanocomposites using a Lewis acid as a catalyst (AlCl₃) and organo-modified clay as a nano-reinforcing filler. The copolymer (myr-co-lim) was prepared by cationic copolymerization using AlCl₃ as a catalyst. The structure of the obtained copolymer is studied and confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, and Differential Scanning Calorimetry. By improving the dispersion of the matrix polymer in sheets of the organoclay, Maghnite-CTA⁺ (Mag-CTA⁺), an Algerian natural organophilic clay, was used to preparenanocomposites of linear copolymer (myr-co-lim). In order to identify and assess their structural, morphological, and thermal properties, the effect of the organoclay, used in varyingamounts (1, 4, 7, and 10% by weight), and the preparation process were investigated. The Mag-CTA⁺ is an organophylic montmorillonite silicate clay prepared through a direct exchange process in which they were used as green nano-reinforcing filler. The X-ray diffraction of the resulting nanocomposites revealed a considerable alteration in the interlayer spacing of Mag-CTA⁺. As a result, interlayer expansion and myr-co-lim exfoliation between layers of Mag-CTA⁺ were observed. Thermogravimetric analysis provided information on the synthesized nanocomposites' thermal properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy, respectively, were used to determine the structure and morphology of the produced nanocomposites (myr-co-lim/Mag). The intercalation of myr-co-lim in the Mag-CTA⁺ sheets has been supported by the results, and the optimum amount of organoclay needed to create a nanocomposite with high thermal stability is 10% by weight. Finally, a new method for the preparation of copolymer and nanocomposites from myrcene and limonene in a short reaction time was developed.

Biopolymer-based electrospun fibers in electrochemical devices: versatile platform for energy, environment, and health monitoring

Electrochemical power tools are regarded as essential keys in a world that is becoming increasingly reliant on fossil fuels in order to meet the challenges of rapidly depleting fossil fuel supplies. Additionally, due to the industrialization of societies and the growth of diseases, the need for sensitive, reliable, inexpensive, and portable sensors and biosensors for noninvasive monitoring of human health and environmental pollution is felt more than ever before. In recent decades, electrospun fibers have emerged as promising candidates for the fabrication of highly efficient electrochemical devices, such as actuators, batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and biosensors. Meanwhile, the use of synthetic polymers in the fabrication of versatile electrochemical devices has raised environmental concerns, leading to an increase in the quest for natural polymers. Natural polymers are primarily derived from microorganisms and plants. Despite the challenges of processing bio-based electrospun fibers, employing natural nanofibers in the fabrication of electrochemical devices has garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Here, various natural polymers and the strategies employed to fabricate various electrospun biopolymers are briefly covered. The recent advances and research strategies used to apply the bio-based electrospun membranes in different electrochemical devices are carefully summarized, along with the scopes in various advanced technologies. A comprehensive and critical discussion about the use of biopolymer-based electrospun fibers as the potential alternative to non-renewable ones in future technologies is briefly highlighted. This review will serve as a field opening platform for using different biopolymer-based electrospun fibers to advance the electrochemical device-based renewable and sustainable technologies, which will be of high interest to a large community. Accordingly, future studies should focus on feasible and cost-effective extraction of biopolymers from natural resources as well as fabrication of high-performance nanofibrous biopolymer-based components applicable in various electrochemical devices.

Free surface entrainment of oxide particles and their role in ultrasonic treatment performance of aluminum alloys

Although the ultrasonic treatment of molten aluminum has been studied for long period, there is still much to be revealed for this process. Many studies have focused on the investigation of acoustic cavitation and streaming under the horn tip and their effects on the treatment efficiency. However, to the best of our knowledge, no attempt has been done to explain phenomena occurring near or on the melt free surface. Thus, the goal of this study is to investigate phenomena occurring at the free surface during ultrasound irradiation and clarify their possible influence on the ultrasound treatment performance. The results of high temperature and water model experiments reveal that ultrasound irradiation significantly promotes the formation of alumina particles on the melt free surface around sonotrode, and part of these particles can be entrained into aluminum melts. Furthermore, TEM observation results suggested that the entrained alumina inclusions can serve as nucleation sites for the primary Al₃Zr compounds. Most importantly, the oxidation and entrainment of particles from free surface are likely to be controllable by the immersion depth of sonotrode into molten aluminum.

Experimental investigation on the ultrasonic impregnation of wood through measurements of the intensity of sonoluminescence

Ultrasonic impregnation is thought to be an effective way of permeation of liquid into material through the material-surface reforming with the attack by an ultrasonic cavitation jet or by the shock wave emitted from a collapsing bubble, or through dynamic transformation of material like a sponge. The action of a cavitation bubble can also provide penetration of liquid into the interior of the material. This paper investigates whether there is a correlation between the intensity of sonoluminescence (SL) measured at different positions and the increment in the mass of the wood material (cedar) after sonication with immersion into water in order to clarify the role of cavitation bubbles for ultrasonic impregnation. It was found that a high mass change was obtained for the material located at the position for high (the maximum) SL intensity. The number density of ultrasonic cavitation bubbles that are able to collapse leading to the emission of SL is correlated with the degree of ultrasonic impregnation.

Synthesis and Characterization of Copolymers and Nanocomposites from Limonene, Styrene and Organomodified-Clay Using Ultrasonic Assisted Method

In the present work, we report a simple synthesis method for preparation of copolymers and nanocomposites from limonene and styrene using clay as a catalyst. The copolymerization reaction is carried out by using a proton exchanged clay as a catalyst called Mag-H⁺. The effect of temperature, reaction time and amount of catalyst were studied, and the obtained copolymer structure (lim-co-sty) is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The molecular weight of the obtained copolymer is determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and is about 4500 g·mol⁻¹. The (lim-co-sty/Mag 1%, 3%, 7% and 10% by weight of clay) nanocomposites were prepared through polymer/clay mixture in solution method using ultrasonic irradiation, in the presence of Mag-CTA⁺ as green nano-reinforcing filler. The Mag-CTA⁺ is organophilic silicate clay prepared through a direct exchange process, using cetyltrimethylammonuim bromide (CTAB). The prepared lim-co-sty/Mag nanocomposites have been extensively characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). TEM analysis confirms the results obtained by XRD and clearly show that the obtained nanocomposites are partially exfoliated for the lower amount of clay (1% and 3% wt) and intercalated for higher amounts of clay (7% and 10% wt). Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated an enhancement of thermal stability of nanocomposites compared with the pure copolymer.

Ultrasonic Processing of Food Waste to Generate Value-Added Products

Ultrasonic processing has a great potential to transform waste from the food and agriculture industry into value-added products. In this review article, we discuss the use of ultrasound for the valorisation of food and agricultural waste. Ultrasonic processing is considered a green technology as compared to the conventional chemical extraction/processing methods. The influence of ultrasound pre-treatment on the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), particle size, and cell wall content of food waste is first discussed. The use of ultrasonic processing to produce/extract bioactives such as oil, polyphenolic, polysaccharides, fatty acids, organic acids, protein, lipids, and enzymes is highlighted. Moreover, ultrasonic processing in bioenergy production from food waste such as green methane, hydrogen, biodiesel, and ethanol through anaerobic digestion is also reviewed. The conversion of waste oils into biofuels with the use of ultrasound is presented. The latest developments and future prospective on the use of ultrasound in developing energy-efficient methods to convert food and agricultural waste into value-added products are summarised.

Sonophotocatalysis—Limits and Possibilities for Synergistic Effects

Advanced oxidation processes are promising techniques for water remediation and degradation of micropollutants in aqueous systems. Since single processes such as sonolysis and photocatalysis exhibit limitations, combined AOP systems can enhance degradation efficiency. The present work addresses the synergistic intensification potential of an ultrasound-assisted photocatalysis (sonophotocatalysis) for bisphenol A degradation with a low-frequency sonotrode (f = 20 kHz) in a batch-system. The effects of energy input and suspended photocatalyst dosage (TiO2-nanoparticle, m = 0–0.5 g/L) were investigated. To understand the synergistic effects, the sonication characteristics were investigated by bubble-field analysis, hydrophone measurements, and chemiluminescence of luminol to identify cavitation areas due to the generation of hydroxyl radicals. Comparing the sonophotocatalysis with sonolysis and photocatalysis (incl. mechanical stirring), synergies up to 295% and degradation rates of up to 1.35 min−1 were achieved. Besides the proof of synergistic intensification, the investigation of energy efficiency for a degradation degree of 80% shows that a process optimization can be realized. Thus, it could be demonstrated that there is an effective limit of energy input depending on the TiO2 dosage.

Ultrasound triggered organic mechanoluminescence materials

Ultrasound induced organic mechanoluminescence materials have become one of the focal topics in wireless light sources since they exhibit high spatiotemporal resolution, biocompatibility and excellent tissue penetration depth. These properties promote great potential in ultrahigh sensitive bioimaging with no background noise and noninvasive nanodevices. Recent advances in chemistry, nanotechnology and biomedical research are revolutionizing ultrasound induced organic mechanoluminescence. Herein, we try to summarize some recent researches in ultrasound induced mechanoluminescence that use various materials design strategies based on the molecular conformational changes and cycloreversion reaction. Practical applications, like noninvasive bioimaging and noninvasive optogenetics, are also presented and prospected.

Influence of Surface Tension on Dynamic Characteristics of Single Bubble in Free-Field Exposed to Ultrasound

The motion of bubbles in an ultrasonic field is a fundamental physical mechanism in most applications of acoustic cavitation. In these applications, surface-active solutes, which could lower the surface tension of the liquid, are always utilized to improve efficiency by reducing the cavitation threshold. This paper examines the influence of liquids’ surface tension on single micro-bubbles motion in an ultrasonic field. A novel experimental system based on high-speed photography has been designed to investigate the temporary evolution of a single bubble in the free-field exposed to a 20.43 kHz ultrasound in liquids with different surface tensions. In addition, the R-P equations in the liquid with different surface tension are solved. It is found that the influences of the surface tension on the bubble dynamics are obvious, which reflect on the changes in the maximum size and speed of the bubble margin during bubble oscillating, as well as the weaker stability of the bubble in the liquid with low surface tension, especially for the oscillating bubble with higher speed. These effects of the surface tension on the bubble dynamics can explain the mechanism of surfactants for promoting acoustic cavitation in numerous application fields.

Spectral diagnosis of in situ plasma cleaning in large-aperture optical components: reactive species characterization and prediction of cleaning

The damage of large-aperture optical components caused by organic contamination limits the performance improvement of high-power laser facilities. We propose an in situ plasma cleaning technology to remove the organic contaminants on large-aperture optical components, demonstrated by the simulated equipment. The cleaning characteristics of the equipment were investigated by spectral diagnosis. The cleaning capability coefficient was defined to evaluate the performance of the plasma equipment. Then diffusion properties of reactive species along the surface of optical components were elucidated under various charge parameters, including powers, source frequencies, and gas pressures. We discuss the underlying cleaning mechanism for removing organic contaminants. A new plasma cleaning model is established to predict the treatment time with the cleaning capability coefficient.

A single oscillating bubble in liquids with high Mach number

The oscillation characteristics of a single bubble and its induced radiation pressure and the dissipated power are essential for a wide range of applications. For bubble oscillations with high Mach number, the influence of the liquid compressibility is significantly strong and should be fully considered. In the present paper, the bubble wall motion equation with the second-order Mach number is employed for investigating a free oscillating bubble in the liquid with numerical and experimental verifications. For the purpose of comparisons, the revised Keller-Miksis equation up to the first-order Mach number is solved with the same conditions (e.g. the initial conditions and the ambient pressure). Through our simulations, comparing with the predictions by the first-order equation, we find that: (1) The bubble radius, the bubble wall radial velocity and the bubble wall radial acceleration predicted by the second-order equation with high Mach number are significantly different respectively, and the dimensionless differences increase with the increase of the Mach number. (2) The valid prediction range of the second-order equation is much larger. (3) The dissipated power predicted by the second-order equation with high Mach number is smaller.

Quantification of sonochemical and sonophysical effects in a 20 kHz probe-type sonoreactor: Enhancing sonophysical effects in heterogeneous systems with milli-sized particles

Even though acoustic cavitation has been widely investigated, only few researchers focused on the relationship between sonochemical and sonophysical activities and on the enhancement of sonophysical activity. In this study, sonochemical and sonophysical activities were investigated in a heterogeneous system to understand the relationship between these two activities and to suggest optimal conditions for ultrasonic desorption/extraction processes comprising milli-sized glass beads. The sonochemical activity was quantitatively analyzed using potassium iodide dosimetry in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Sonophysical activity was quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed using paint-coated bead desorption tests and aluminum foil erosion tests under three probe positions of "T" (1 cm below the liquid surface), "B" (1 cm above the vessel bottom), and "M" (midpoint between "T" and "B"). Three different sizes of glass beads (diameter: 0.2, 1.0, and 4.0 mm) were used in this study. The highest sonochemical activity was obtained at "B" in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. However, three times lower sonochemical activity was observed in the heterogeneous system than in the homogeneous system because significant attenuation and unstable reflection of ultrasound occurred in the bead layer and suspension. Higher sonophysical activity was observed, when the bead size decreased and the probe approached the bottom. However, no significant sonophysical activity was detected when the beads were attached to the bottom. Therefore, the sonophysically active region was the zone around the probe body, opposite to the ultrasound irradiation tip, and only suspended beads could undergo severe cavitational actions. This was confirmed via aluminum foil tests. Several erosion marks on the foil were observed in the area around the probe body, whereas no severe damage was observed at the bottom. Moreover, the degree of sonophysical activity did not change for various saturating gases. This might be due to the different thresholds of sonochemical and sonophysical activities.

A comprehensive review on MXenes as new nanomaterials for degradation of hazardous pollutants: Deployment as heterogeneous sonocatalysis

MXene-based nanomaterials (MBNs) are two-dimensional materials that exhibit a series of sought after properties, including rich surface chemistry, adjustable bandgap structures, high electrical conductivity, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, and large specific surface area. MBNs have an exemplar performance when applied for the degradation of hazardous pollutants with various advanced oxidation processes such as heterogeneous sonocatalysis. As such, this work focuses on the sonocatalytic degradation of various hazardous pollutants using MXene-based catalysts. First, the general principles of sonocatalysis are examined, followed by an analysis of the main components of the MXene-based sonocatalysts and their application for pollutant degradation. Lastly, ongoing challenges are highlighted with recommendations to address the issues.

Ultrasound-assisted soil washing processes using organic solvents for the remediation of PCBs-contaminated soils

Ultrasonic soil washing processes using organic solvents were investigated for the development of novel remediation technologies for persistent organic pollutants (POPs)- contaminated soils. Aluminum foil erosion was first tested to understand sonophysical activity in water, methanol (polar) and n-hexane (nonpolar) in a 28 kHz double-bath-type sonoreactor. Significant sonophysical damage on the aluminum foil was observed at the antinodes for all solvents, and the order of degree of sonophysical damage was as follows: water > methanol > n-hexane. Subsequently, conventional (mechanical mixing only) and ultrasonic soil washing (mechanical mixing and ultrasound) techniques were compared for the removal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from soil. Two types of contaminated soils, fresh (Soil A, C0 = 2.5 mg/kg) and weathered (Soil B, C0 = 0.5 mg/kg), were used and the applied soil-to-liquid (S:L) ratio was 1:5 and 1:10 for methanol and n-hexane, respectively. The polar solvent significantly increased washing efficiencies compared to the nonpolar solvent, despite the nonpolar nature of the PCBs. Washing efficiency was significantly enhanced in ultrasonic soil washing compared to conventional washing, owing to macro- and micro-scale sonophysical actions. The highest washing efficiencies of 90% for Soil A and 70% for Soil B were observed in the ultrasonic washing processes using methanol. Additionally, a single operation of the ultrasonic washing process was superior to two sequential processes with conventional mixing in terms of washing efficiency, consumption of washing agents, treatment of washing leachate, and operation time. Finally, the removal of PCBs in an organic solvent (methanol) was investigated in photolytic and sonolytic processes for the post-treatment of soil washing leachate. A photolysis efficiency of 80% was obtained within 60 min of UV exposure for intensities of 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 W/cm2. The primary mechanism of PCBs degradation is photolytic dechlorination. In contrast, no degradation was detected in the sonolytic process, as the excess organic solvent acted as a strong radical scavenger.

The promise of low-intensity ultrasound: A review on sonosensitizers and sonocatalysts by ultrasonic activation for bacterial killing

Antimicrobial resistance has become one of the main public health issues in modern society. Ultrasonicantimicrobial treatment (UAT) is expected to solve the problem of antimicrobial resistance since ultrasonic treatment does not cause drug resistance during inactivation. However, the ultrasonic application is hindered due to the high energy cost. To cast more lights on the ultrasound in tandem with catalysts as a superior strategy for bacterial inactivation, the present review focuses on the UAT with the assistant of continuous development of organic sonosensitizer and inorganic sonocatalyst. With the application of these nanomaterials, the ultrasonic parameters changed from low-frequency and high-power ultrasound to high-frequency and low-power ultrasound. The review also presents the composition of sonosensitizers/sonocatalysts including organic and inorganic nanoparticles and discusses the ultrasonic activation mechanisms triggered by these catalysts. Based on the synergistic effect of ultrasound and catalysts, we discuss the importance of extracellular oxidation and intracellular oxidation in the process of bacterial inactivation. Overall, UAT combined with catalysts appears to be an effective treatment strategy that can be successfully applied in the field of medicine, environmental treatment, and food industry.

Exploring the effect of ultrasonic power, frequency, and load toward remediation of oil-contaminated beach and oilfield sands using ANOVA

Despite the potential shown by previous investigations on the use of ultrasound for the remediation of oil-contaminated sand, the influence and interactions among ultrasonic parameters and oily sand are unclear, leading to possible ineffective treatment and high-power consumption. In order to improve the process efficiency, this work analyzes the effects of ultrasonic power, frequency, and load toward the cleaning of crude oil-contaminated sand, using two different sample positions and sand types. Crude oil-contaminated beach sand and produced sand from offshore oil well were used as samples. They were cleaned in custom-made ultrasonic bath reactor for 10 min with power from 30 to 120 W, frequency covering 25-60 kHz, and sand load of 10-100 g. With experimental design consisting multiple factors and levels, the interactions between factors in all possible combinations were determined using ANOVA (n = 210). From p-value based at 95% confidence interval and extensive F test, the three most significant factors were the sand type, the ultrasonic frequency, and the interaction between sand type and frequency. The best setting for suspended samples involved high frequency of 60 kHz, whereas bottom samples preferred low frequency at 28 kHz. This finding was justified when the acoustic pressure attenuation, standing wave pattern, and surface pitting/cracking were found in correlation with the cleaning results. Overall, the maximum treatment under ultrasonic bath solely gained around 60%, improvable by hybrid cleaning with other techniques such as chemical, biological, mechanical, and thermal.

Numerical study on the desorption processes of oil droplets inside oil-contaminated sand under cavitation micro-jets

The removal of the adsorbed oil droplet is critical to deoiling treatment of oil-bearing solid waste. Ultrasonic cavitation is regarded as an extremely useful method to assist the oil droplets desorption in the deoiling treatment. In this paper, the effects of cavitation micro-jets on the oil droplets desorption were studied. The adsorbed states of oil droplets in the oil-contaminated sand were investigated using a microscope. Three representative absorbed states of the oil droplets can be summarized as: (1) the individual oil droplet adsorbed on the particle surface (2) the clustered oil droplets adsorbed on the particle surface; (3) the oil droplet adsorbed in a gap between particles. The micro-jet generation during the bubble collapse near a rigid wall under different acoustic pressure amplitudes at an ultrasonic frequency of 20 kHz was investigated numerically. The desorption processes of the oil droplets at the three representative absorbed states under micro-jets were also simulated subsequently. The results showed that the acoustic pressure has a great influence on the velocity of micro-jet, and the initial diameter of cavitation bubbles is significant for the cross-sectional area of micro-jets. The wall jet caused by a micro-jet impacting on the solid wall is the most important factor for the removal of the absorbed oil droplets. The oil droplet is broken by the jet impinging, and then it breaks away from the solid wall due to the shear force generated by the wall jet. In addition to a higher sound pressure, the cavitation bubble at a larger initial diameter is more important for the desorption of the clustered oil droplets. Conversely, the micro-jet generated by the cavitation bubble at a smaller initial diameter (0.1 mm) is more appropriate for the desorption of the oil droplet in a narrow or sharp-angled gap.

Sound methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles from biological molecules

The development of simple, green, reproducible, and scalable approaches for synthesizing nanoparticles from biomolecules is important to advance nanomaterials towards therapeutic applications. Microreactors generated by high frequency ultrasound provide a one pot-platform to alter the physiochemical properties and stability of various types of biomolecules to ultimately generate multifunctional nanoparticles with controlled size and morphology. Herein, recent advancements in the field of nanoparticles fabrication from amino acids, phenolics, peptides and proteins using both high and low frequency ultrasound are reviewed. In particular, the sound driven self-assembly of biomolecules into nanoparticles by using high frequency ultrasound, as an emerging and innovative approach, is discussed in detail.

Key Points in Remote-Controlled Drug Delivery: From the Carrier Design to Clinical Trials

The increased research activity aiming at improved delivery of pharmaceutical molecules indicates the expansion of the field. An efficient therapeutic delivery approach is based on the optimal choice of drug-carrying vehicle, successful targeting, and payload release enabling the site-specific accumulation of the therapeutic molecules. However, designing the formulation endowed with the targeting properties in vitro does not guarantee its selective delivery in vivo. The various biological barriers that the carrier encounters upon intravascular administration should be adequately addressed in its overall design to reduce the off-target effects and unwanted toxicity in vivo and thereby enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the payload. Here, we discuss the main parameters of remote-controlled drug delivery systems: (i) key principles of the carrier selection; (ii) the most significant physiological barriers and limitations associated with the drug delivery; (iii) major concepts for its targeting and cargo release stimulation by external stimuli in vivo. The clinical translation for drug delivery systems is also described along with the main challenges, key parameters, and examples of successfully translated drug delivery platforms. The essential steps on the way from drug delivery system design to clinical trials are summarized, arranged, and discussed.

Towards the development of cavitation technology for gas hydrate prevention

In offshore gas well drilling and production, methane hydrate may block the tubing, resulting in the stoppage of gas production. Conventional methods such as injection of thermal hydrate inhibitors, thermal insulating or heating, gas dehydration and reducing pressure are time-consuming and expensive, and sometimes, they are not realistic in production conditions. New methods are needed to lower the cost of gas hydrate prevention and to overcome these limitations. The thermal effect of cavitation was applied to the prevention of gas hydrate in this study. The thermal impact of cavitation, supposed to heat the fluids and prevent the formation of gas hydrate, was evaluated. Numerical simulation was performed to study the thermal performance of cavitation. Furthermore, experimental studies of the influence of initial temperature, flow rate, fluid volume and fluid viscosity on the thermal effect of cavitation were performed, and the results were analysed.
