Abstract
Evaluating the quality of herbal medicine based on the content and activity of its main components is highly beneficial. Developing an eco-friendly determination method has significant application potential. In this study, we propose a new method to simultaneously predict the total flavonoid content (TFC), xanthine oxidase inhibitory (XO) activity, and antioxidant activity (AA) of Prunus mume using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR). Using the sodium nitrite-aluminum nitrate-sodium hydroxide colorimetric method, uric acid colorimetric method, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity as reference methods, we analyzed TFC, XO, and AA in 90 P. mume samples collected from different locations in China. The solid samples were subjected to NIR. By employing spectral preprocessing and optimizing spectral bands, we established a rapid prediction model for TFC, XO, and AA using partial least squares regression (PLS). To improve the model's performance and eliminate irrelevant variables, competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) was used to calculate the pretreated full spectrum. Evaluation model indicators included the root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) and determination coefficient (R2) values. The TFC, XO, and AA model, combining optimal spectral preprocessing and spectral bands, had RMSECV values of 0.139, 0.117, and 0.121, with RCV2 values exceeding 0.92. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for the TFC, XO, and AA model on the prediction set was 0.301, 0.213, and 0.149, with determination coefficient (RP2) values of 0.915, 0.933, and 0.926. The results showed a strong correlation between NIR with TFC, XO, and AA in P. mume. Therefore, the established model was effective, suitable for the rapid quantification of TFC, XO, and AA. The prediction method is simple and rapid, and can be extended to the study of medicinal plant content and activity.

Abstract
The utilization of metallic nanoparticles in bio-nanofabrication holds significant potential in the field of applied research. The current study applied and compared integrated ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction (US/MICE), ultrasonic extraction (USE), microwave-assisted extraction (MICE), and maceration (MAE) to extract total phenolic content (TPC). In addition, the study examined the antioxidant activity of Commiphora gileadensis (Cg) leaf. The results demonstrated that the TPC of US/MICE exhibited the maximum value at 59.34 ± 0.007 mg GAE/g DM. Furthermore, at a concentration of 10 μg/mL, TPC displayed a significant scavenging effect on DPPH (56.69 %), with an EC50 (6.48 μg/mL). Comprehensive metabolite profiling of the extract using UPLC-qTOF-MS/MS was performed to identify active agents. A total of 64 chromatographic peaks were found, out of which 60 were annotated. The most prevalent classes of metabolites found were polyphenols (including flavonoids and lignans), organic compounds and their derivatives, amides and amines, terpenes, and fatty acid derivatives. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the aggregate size of the synthesized nanoparticles and the spherical shape of C. gileadensis-mediated silver nanoparticles (Cg-AgNPs). The nanoparticles had a particle size ranging from 7.7 to 42.9 nm. The Cg-AgNPs exhibited more inhibition zones against S. aureus and E. coli. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Cg-extract, AgNPs, and Cg-AgNPs were also tested. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using combined ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction to separate and extract chemicals from C. gileadensis on a large scale. These compounds have potential use in the pharmaceutical industry. Combining antibacterial and biocompatible properties in materials is vital for designing new materials for biomedical applications. Additionally, the results showed that the biocompatibility of the Ag-NPs using C. gileadensis extracts demonstrated outstanding antibacterial properties.

Abstract
Ultrasound technique is one of the green technologies that is being utilized widely for varying food processes. Our aim in this study was to carry out ultrasonication, pasteurization and chemical preservation (Potassium metabisulfite) techniques on a carrot-orange juice blend. Additionally, the effect of these treatments on the storage period of about 21 days was also determined. The study displayed an array of results under the effect of different treatments. Throughout the storage period of 21 days' significant results were presented by the carrot juice blend subjected to the ultrasound technique (25 min) giving the highest values for total phenolic content (25.56 ± 1.29 mg GAE/100 mL), total antioxidant activity (573.48 ± 2.29 mg Trolox /100 mL), DPPH (32.32 ± 1.83 %) and reducing power (45.45 ± 1.92 mg AAE/100 mL) with least deterioration, followed by the blends treated with potassium metabisulfite (KMS) and pasteurization. The physicochemical analysis showed a non-significant effect of treatments on pH and total soluble solids (oBrix) of carrot-orange juice blends whereas, the changes in color parameters L*, a* and b* were noted to show changes in treated blends. Similarly, the results for the GC-MS quantification of volatile compounds displayed the highest concentrations in the ultrasonicated blends as compared to other techniques. The peak quantity was obtained for the hexanal (9903.43 ± 7.61 μg.kg-1) followed by 3-Methylbutanal (2638.7 ± 5.44 μg.kg-1), terpinolene (2337.16 ± 5.28 μg.kg-1), elemicin (2198.28 ± 5.28 μg.kg-1), myristicin (1936.62 ± 6.72 μg.kg-1). The use of sonication can effectively enhance the nutritional qualities of juice, as perceived by consumers.

Abstract
Commiphora gileadensis (C. gileadensis) has been identified and linked with various health benefits and pharmaceutical potential for its phytochemical activities and chemical constituents. This study aimed to evaluate ultrasonic-assisted extraction (USE) technique for total phenols content from C. gileadensis leaf compared to the hydrodistillation extraction (HDE). Our results showed that the USE operating conditions were identified as: MeOH·H2O solvent-to-fresh sample ratio of 80:20 (v/v); ultrasonic power/frequency at 150 W/20 kHz; and a temperature of 40 ± 1°C; subjected to acoustic waves intermittently for a calculated time (5 min) during the total programmed time of 12 min. The USE exhibited (118.71 ± 0.009 mg GAE/g DM) more amounts of all phenols than HDE (101.47 ± 0.005 mg GAE/g DM), and antioxidant (77.78 ± 0.73%, 75.27 ± 0.59% scavenging inhibition of DPPH), respectively. Anti-aging and Cytotoxicity activities were investigated. The results of biological evaluations showed that the crude extracts of C. gileadensis significantly extended the replicative lifespan of K6001 yeast. In addition, in vitro cytotoxicity against the HepG2 cell line showed significant anticancer activity, and approximately 100 μg/mL is required to decrease viability compared with that of the control. This study is proven for a larger scale to extract and isolate compounds of C. gileadensis for potential utilization in the pharmaceutical industry. In conclusion, advanced methods afford an extract with high activity in the biological properties of the extract.

Abstract
Thermosonication (TS) is a novel and viable technique employed to replace conventional thermal processing. TS treatment combined with pasteurization was used to kill the residual heat-resistant Bacillus in pasteurized milk and extend the shelf life of pasteurized milk and compared with High Temperture Shoort Time (HTST) pasteurization to study its decontamination effect on Bacillus subtilis and the quality of treated milk. The results showed that after 40 kHz, 240 W, 25 min ultrasonic treatment and 50 °C heating decontamination treatment, the number of B. subtilis in the medium and milk medium decreased by 4.17 log CFU/mL and 4.09 log CFU/mL respectively. The results of cell membrane permeability showed that the leakage of DNA and protein in the HTST-TS group increased by 52.3 % and 34 %, respectively, when compared to that in the HTST group. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed that the bacterial cell membrane of the HTST-TS group swelled up, the cell wall was ruptured, and the cell content was accumulated in the cells. The results showed that HTST-TS treatment significantly inhibited the activities of ATPase (47 %), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) (68.6 %), and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) (54.4 %). The physical and chemical sensory evaluation of milk treated with HTST-TS showed that HTST-TS treatment could improve the L* value (2.24 %), zeta potential (64.19 %), and colloidal particle size (14.49 %) of milk but had no significant effect on oral sensitivity. In conclusion, this study provides new insights, which may be helpful in implementing this new combined decontamination method in the dairy industry to improve the quality of pasteurized milk and extend the its shelf life.

Abstract
Lavender is a valuable medicinal plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Currently 39 species are known, but only Lavandula angustifolia is a pharmacopoeial raw material. Lavender has a long history of medicinal use and mainly exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, sedative, antidepressant, spasmolytic, anticholinesterases, antifungal and antibacterial properties. Used internally, it relieves symptoms of mental stress and insomnia and supports digestion. Topical use of lavender in aromatherapy, neuralgia and antiseptics is also known. The constant interest in lavender, and in particular in Lavandula angustifolia, in the field of medicine and pharmacy is evidenced by the growing number of publications. In view of so many studies, it seems important to review traditional and modern extraction techniques that determine the chemical composition responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of various extracts from the species of the Lavandula genus.

Abstract
Combined ultrasound-microwave techniques and pre-enzymatic treatment (hemicellulase and cellulase) enhance essential oil isolation from Citrus reticulata Blanco (tangerine) leaves (CrBL). Subsequently, synergistic effects of modified amorphous octenyl succinic anhydride starch (OSA-MS), almond oil, and high-energy microfluidics were studied in synergy with ultrasound techniques in the production of CrBL essential oil (CrBL-EO) nanoemulsion (CrBL-EONE). GC-MS was used to study the extraction technique. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis was used with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) techniques to investigate the nanoemulsion matrices' physical and chemical properties. The D-limonene nanoemulsion (D-LNE) reached the optimal size of droplets (65.3 ± 1.1 r.nm), polydispersity index (PDI) (0.167 ± 0.015), and ζ-potential (-41.0 ± 0.4 mV). Besides, the CrBL-EONE obtained the optimal size of droplets (86.5 ± 0.5 r.nm), PDI (0.182 ± 0.012), and ζ-potential (-40.4 ± 0.8 mV). All the nanoparticle treatments showed significant values in terms of the creaming index (CI%) and inhibition activity (IA%) in the β-carotene/linoleate system with a low degradation rate (DR). The current study's findings showed that integrated ultrasound-microwave techniques and pre-enzymatic treatment could enhance the extraction efficiency of the CrBL-EO. In addition, OSA-MS and almond oil can also be employed to produce CrBL-EONE and D-LNE.

Abstract
The present study investigated and compared the quality and chemical composition of Moroccan walnut (Juglans regia L.) oil. This study used three extraction techniques: cold pressing (CP), soxhlet extraction (SE), and ultrasonic extraction (UE). The findings showed that soxhlet extraction gave a significantly higher oil yield compared to the other techniques used in this work (65.10% with p < 0.05), while cold pressing and ultrasonic extraction gave similar yields: 54.51% and 56.66%, respectively (p > 0.05). Chemical composition analysis was carried out by GC−MS and allowed 11 compounds to be identified, of which the major compound was linoleic acid (C18:2), with a similar percentage (between 57.08% and 57.84%) for the three extractions (p > 0.05). Regarding the carotenoid pigment, the extraction technique significantly affected its content (p < 0.05) with values between 10.11 mg/kg and 14.83 mg/kg. The chlorophyll pigment presented a similar content in both oils extracted by SE and UE (p > 0.05), 0.20 mg/kg and 0.16 mg/kg, respectively, while the lowest content was recorded in the cold-pressed oil with 0.13 mg/kg. Moreover, the analysis of phytosterols in walnut oil revealed significantly different contents (p < 0.05) for the three extraction techniques (between 1168.55 mg/kg and 1306.03 mg/kg). In addition, the analyses of tocopherol composition revealed that γ-tocopherol represented the main tocopherol isomer in all studied oils and the CP technique provided the highest content of total tocopherol with 857.65 mg/kg, followed by SE and UE with contents of 454.97 mg/kg and 146.31 mg/kg, respectively, which were significantly different (p < 0.05). This study presents essential information for producers of nutritional oils and, in particular, walnut oil; this information helps to select the appropriate method to produce walnut oil with the targeted quality properties and chemical compositions for the desired purpose. It also helps to form a scientific basis for further research on this plant in order to provide a vision for the possibility of exploiting these oils in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food fields.

Abstract
Interest in the utilization of plant-based bioactive compounds in foods has increased due to their biochemical activities and as alternatives in the reduction of high concentrations of chemical utilization. However, some of these additives are hydrophobic, thus being harder to disperse into the hydrophilic food matrix. Therefore, an oil-in-water nanoemulsion (RRE1-RRE10) was formulated with different concentrations of red rice extract (1-10% w/v). Nanoemulsion showed droplet sizes within the range of 157.33-229.71 nm and the best formulation (RRE5) was selected based on the creaming index which was stable to flocculation over a range of temperatures (30-90 °C), pH (2-9), and salt concentration (100-600 mM). It showed significantly improved antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity as compared to its other counterparts. Potential antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was attributed to RRE5 nanoemulsion as compared to Escherichia coli. Therefore, due to the potential bioactivity of RRE5 nanoemulsion, it can be scaled up at the industrial level.

Abstract
Lavender is a valuable perennial plant from the Lamiaceae family. It is grown mainly for its essential oil, but it also contains polar bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and coumarins. Their level depends on the species, cultivars, geographical origin, climatic conditions, harvest time and extraction method. The authors investigated the effect of several extraction procedures (maceration, decoction and ultrasound-assisted extraction) applied to three cultivars of Lavandula angustifolia (Betty’s Blue, Elizabeth, Hidcote) and two cultivars of Lavandula x intermedia (Grosso, Gros Bleu) on the yield of the polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. HPLC analysis showed the presence of rosmarinic acid (2.52–10.82 mg/g), ferulic acid glucoside (2.94–8.67 mg/g), caffeic acid (1.70–3.10 mg/g), morin (1.02–13.63 mg/g), coumarin (1.01–5.97 mg/g) and herniarin (1.05–8.02 mg/g). The content of phenolic acids and flavonoids was higher in lavender, while the content of coumarins was higher in lavandin in all types of extracts. The antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH-EPR assay for antiradical properties (104.58–206.77 μmol Trolox/g) and FRAP assay for reducing properties (79.21–203.06 μmol Trolox/g). The obtained results showed that the cultivar is the dominant factor differentiating the samples. Still, the extraction method plays an important role in the final bioactive substances content and antioxidant properties of obtained extracts.

Abstract
Using ultrasound (US) in proanthocyanidin (PA) extraction has become one of the important emerging technologies. It could be the next generation for studying the US mechnophore impact on the bioactive compound’s functionality. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of US treatment on PAs extracted from kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) leaves, and to provide a comprehensive chemical composition and bioactivity relationship of the purified kiwifruit leaves PAs (PKLPs). Several methods like single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) for the four affected factors on US extraction efficiency were constructed. HPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, cytotoxicity analysis, and antioxidant activity were also demonstrated. In the results, the modeling of PA affected factors showed that 40% US-amplitude, 30 mL/g dry weight (DW) solvent to solid ration (S/S), and 70 °C for 15 min were the optimum conditions for the extraction of PAs. Furthermore, PKLPs exhibited significant radical scavenging and cellular antioxidant activity (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study’s novelty comes from the broad prospects of using US in PKLP green extraction that could play an important role in maximizing this phytochemical functionality in drug discovery and food science fields.

Abstract
Beta-carotene is an important natural pigment that is very beneficial to human health. It is widely found in vegetables and fruits. The three main functions are antioxidant effects, cell gap junction-related functions and immune-related functions. Because of its diverse functions, beta-carotene is believed to prevent and treat many chronic diseases. Gastric cancer is one of the most important diseases it can treat. Gastric cancer is a type of cancer with a high incidence. Its etiology varies, and the pathogenesis is complex. Gastric cancer seriously affects human health. The role of beta-carotene, a natural nutrient, in gastric cancer has been explored by many researchers, including molecular mechanisms and epidemiological studies. Molecular studies have mainly focused on oxidative stress, cell cycle, signal transduction pathways and immune-related mechanisms of beta-carotene in gastric cancer. Many epidemiological surveys and cohort studies of patients with gastric cancer have been conducted, and the results of these epidemiological studies vary due to the use of different research methods and analysis of different regions. This paper will summarize the results of these studies, mainly in terms of molecular mechanisms and epidemiological research results, which will provide a systematic basis for future studies of the treatment and prognosis of gastric cancer. This paper will help researchers identify new research directions.

Abstract
Ultrasound (US) has become one of the most important techniques in green chemistry and emerging technologies. Many research investigations documented the usefulness of US in a wide range of applications in food science, nanotechnology, and complementary medicine, where effective extraction of natural products is important. However, as with all novel technologies, US has advantages and limitations that require clarification for full adaptation at an industrial scale. The present review discusses recent applications of US in herbal phytochemistry with the emphasis on US effects on chemical structures of bioactive compounds extracted from herbs and their bioactivities. The impact of different US processing conditions such as frequency, intensity, duration, temperature, and pressure on the effectiveness of the extraction process and the properties of the extracted materials are also discussed. Different frequencies and intensities of US have demonstrated its potential applications in modifying, determining, and predicting the physicochemical properties of herbs and their extracts. US has important applications in nanotechnology where it supports the fabrication of inexpensive and eco-friendly herbal nanostructures, as well as acoustic-based biosensors for chemical imaging of the herbal tissues. The application of US enhances the rates of chemical processes such as hydrolysis of herbal fibers, which reduces the time and energy consumed without affecting the quality of the final products. Overall, the use of US in herbal science has great potential to create novel chemical constructions and to be used as an innovative diagnostic system in various biomedical, food, and analytical applications.

Abstract
Lotus Receptaculum Nelumbinis has been sparking wide research interests due to its rich phenolic compounds. In the present work, ultrasonic-assisted extraction coupled with glycerol was employed to extract phenolic compounds from Receptaculum Nelumbinis and the process was optimized using a response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimal conditions for the total phenolic content (TPC) extract were obtained: glycerol concentration of 40%, an extraction temperature of 66 °C, ultrasonic time of 44 min, and the solvent-to-solid ratio of 55 mL/g. Under these optimum extraction conditions, the extraction yield of TPC was 92.84 ± 2.13 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) /g. Besides, the antioxidant activities demonstrated the ability of free radical scavenging by four different methods that included 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and reducing activity (RA) were 459.73 ± 7.07, 529.97 ± 7.30, 907.61 ± 20.28, and 983.66 ± 11.80 μmol TE/g, respectively. Six phenolic compounds were identified by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography combined with triple-time-of-flight mass spectrophotometry (UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS) from the extracts. Meanwhile, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was conducted to identify the characteristic functional groups of the extracts and thus reflected the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated the microstructure difference of four treatments, which might explain the relationships between antioxidant activities and the structures of phenolic compounds.

Abstract
This investigation aims to evaluate the synergistic effects of amorphous OSA-modified starch, unsaturated lipid-carrier (RBD-SFO), and high-energy microfluidization in synergy with the ultrasonic techniques in fabricating of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil (LAF-EO) nanoparticle. GC-MS and SEM techniques were employed to investigate the LAF-EO isolation method used. DLS analysis was employed along with CLSM and TEM techniques to investigate the physicochemical properties of nanoemulsion formulation (NE) matrices. The NE achieved the optimal spherical and size distributions of droplets (125.7 nm), Poly Dispersity Index (PdI) (0.183), and ζ-potential (-40.3 mV) when the contents of the formulation matrix were as follows: OSA-MS (2%), LAF-EO (1%), RBD-SFO (1%), and Tween-80 (1%). The findings of this work provide a new concept about the synergistic effects of amorphous OSA-modified starch and unsaturated lipid carrier as safe-grade macromolecules in the fabricating of LAF-EO nanoparticles. Besides, the application of the ultrasound cavitation phenomenon has been shown to have effective effect in reducing the droplet hydrodynamic diameter along with enhancing the distribution (PdI) and electrokinetic potential of the LAF-EO nanoparticles.

Abstract
Ultrasonic sterilization (US), as a promising non-thermal sterilization method, exhibits unique superiorities than traditional sterilization methods. In this study, the inactivation mechanism of E. coli O157:H7 under US was investigated in cucumber and bitter gourd vegetable juices. Results revealed that the US treatment showed good antibacterial ability in countering E. coli O157:H7. Through determinations of conductivity and β-galactosidase activity, significant augmentation in membrane permeability of the bacteria was confirmed after the US treatment. The morphologies of the US treated E. coli O157:H7 demonstrated that the integrity of the cell membrane was disrupted by US treatment. SDS-PAGE and LSCM data further proved the disruptive action of US, leading to the leakage of proteins and DNA through the breakage on cell membrane. The decrease of metabolic-related enzyme activity was verified through investigation of bacterial metabolism. The antibacterial mechanism analysis indicated that the US can generate free radicals which resulted in the rise of intracellular oxidative stress, attenuation of energy metabolism and inhibition of hexose monophosphate pathway. As the application verification, the US treatment can cause the deprivation of E. coli O157:H7 cell viability in vegetable juices without obvious impact on the sensory quality.

Abstract
Effective extraction of natural antioxidants from cheap plant sources is still a problem. In this paper, an excellent method of ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from Ajuga ciliata Bunge was studied. The effects of four factors including ethanol volume fraction, ultrasonic time, ultrasonic temperature and material liquid ratio were discussed. After single factor experiments had been investigated, a 4-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken design experiment was used to obtain the model optimum conditions, which are shown as follows: ethanol volume fraction of 41%, liquid-solid ratio of 35:1 mL/g, ultrasonic temperature of 60 °C and ultrasonic time of 50 min. Under these conditions, the experimental productivity is 3.552 mg/g. The spectra of Fourier infrared and energy dispersive X-ray suggest that phenolic compounds exist in the extracts. Besides, free radical scavenging potentials of superoxide anion, hydroxyl and DPPH were measured to evaluate their antioxidant properties. This study proves that the ultrasonic-assisted extraction technique can extract phenolic compounds with antioxidant capacity from Ajuga ciliata Bunge.

Abstract
Abstract This study mainly aimed to optimize a sustainable and green process for extracting bioactive compounds from Foshou fruit by using an integrated technique based on ultrasonic-microwave assisted extraction (UMAE). Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a Box–Behnken design was applied to determine optimal conditions. The following optimized UMAE processing parameters were obtained: sonication time (96.13 s), microwave power (305.28 W), and solid/solvent ratio (1:37). Based on a total phenolic compound extraction yield of 9.21 mg gallic acid (GA) equ/g dry weight (DW), a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 27.52 μg GA equ, and an antioxidant capacity detected by 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) assay of 8.79 mg trolox equ/g DW. The optimized UMAE extract was superior to those obtained using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) or conventional solvent extraction (CSE) methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the three extraction methods affected the sample tissue microstructure. Among them, UMAE caused the most marked structural disruption. UPLC-PDA-Q-TOF-MS analysis identified 67 phenolic compounds in the optimized UMAE extract of the Foshou fruit extract. This study indicated that the integrated UMAE technique is a suitable and safe technique to enhance the qualitative and quantitative extraction of phenolic compounds from Foshou fruit. Abstract
Ultrasonics is one of the developing technologies which is being studied extensively on different food commodities. Our aim was to study the effect of sonication and chemical (Potassium metabisulfite, K2S2O5,) preservation method on grape-carrot juice blend. Sonication/ultrasound treatments (20 kHz frequency, 70% amplitude level (525 W power), and pulse duration 5 s on and 5 s off, 5 min at 15 °C) of all the samples (250 mL) were performed by using an ultrasonic processor with 0.5 in. probe at 2 in. depth of the sample. Additionally, impact of sonication on 90 days of storage period at refrigerated temperature was also measured. It was observed that sonication had a positive effect on nutritional status of juice blend as it enhanced the total phenolic, flavonoid, reducing power and antioxidant properties of juice significantly (p < 0.05) with increase in sonication time. Sonication can be employed successfully for treatment of juice with better nutritional attributes from consumers' point of view.

Abstract
Malaria is the most devastating parasitic disease worldwide. Artemisinin is the only drug that can cure malaria that is resistant to quinine-derived drugs. After the commercial extraction of artemisinin from Artemisia annua, the recovery of dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA) from artemisinin extraction by-product has the potential to increase artemisinin commercial yield. Here we describe the development and optimization of an ultrasound-assisted alkaline procedure for the extraction of DHAA from artemisinin production waste using response surface methodology. Our results using this methodology established that NaOH at 0.36%, extraction time of 67.96 min, liquid-solid ratio of 5.89, and ultrasonic power of 83.9 W were the optimal conditions to extract DHAA from artemisinin production waste. Under these optimal conditions, we achieved a DHAA yield of 2.7%. Finally, we conducted a validation experiment, and the results confirmed the prediction generated by the regression model developed in this study. This work provides a novel way to increase the production of artemisinin per cultivated area and to reduce artemisinin production costs by recycling its commercial waste to obtain DHAA, an immediate precursor of artemisinin. The use of this technology may reduce the costs of artemisinin-based antimalarial medicines.

Abstract
Strong interest of consumers in acquiring minimally processed foods that conserve the different micronutrients has raised the need to study the effect of food processing methods on quality attributes. The aim of the study was to determine the effect ultrasound treatment on color, and the bioactive compounds (ascorbic acid, total phenols, carotenoids, and provitamin A) of Cape gooseberry juice. Color values, ascorbic acid, total phenols, carotenoids, and Retinol Activity Equivalent (RAE) were measured. The results indicate significant reductions (p<0.001) in the chromaticity, yellowing index (IY), and acid ascorbic content was observed in all the juice samples sonicated. But there were significant increases (p<0.001) in hue, the total color differences (TCD), total phenols, carotenoids, and RAE value as compared to control. The results demonstrated that ultrasound processing increase the availability of carotenoids, total phenols and RAE in Cape gooseberry juice.
