Innovations in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs): Pioneering Adsorption Approaches for Persistent Organic Pollutant (POP) Removal

Adsorption is a promising way to remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs), a major environmental issue. With their high porosity and vast surface areas, MOFs are suited for POP removal due to their excellent adsorption capabilities. This review addresses the intricate principles of MOF-mediated adsorption and helps to future attempts to mitigate organic water pollution. This review examines the complicated concepts of MOF-mediated adsorption, including MOF synthesis methodologies, adsorption mechanisms, and material tunability and adaptability. MOFs' ability to adsorb POPs via electrostatic forces, acid-base interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pi-pi interactions is elaborated. This review demonstrates its versatility in eliminating many types of contaminants. Functionalizing, adding metal nanoparticles, or changing MOFs after they are created can improve their performance and remove contaminants. This paper also discusses MOF-based pollutant removal issues and future prospects, including adsorption capacity, selectivity, scale-up for practical application, stability, and recovery. These obstacles can be overcome by rationally designing MOFs, developing composite materials, and improving material production and characterization. Overall, MOF technology research and innovation hold considerable promise for environmental pollution solutions and sustainable remediation. Desorption and regeneration in MOFs are also included in the review, along with methods for improving pollutant removal efficiency and sustainability. Case studies of effective MOF regeneration and scaling up for practical deployment are discussed, along with future ideas for addressing these hurdles.

Recent Developments in Sonochemical Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Ultrasounds are commonly used in medical imaging, solution homogenization, navigation, and ranging, but they are also a great energy source for chemical reactions. Sonochemistry uses ultrasounds and thus realizes one of the basic concepts of green chemistry, i.e., energy savings. Moreover, reduced reaction time, mostly using water as a solvent, and better product yields are among the many factors that make ultrasound-induced reactions greener than those performed under conventional conditions. Sonochemistry has been successfully implemented for the preparation of various materials; this review covers sonochemically synthesized nanoporous materials. For instance, sonochemical-assisted methods afforded ordered mesoporous silicas, spherical mesoporous silicas, periodic mesoporous organosilicas, various metal oxides, biomass-derived activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, diverse metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. Among these materials, highly porous samples have also been prepared, such as garlic peel-derived activated carbon with an apparent specific surface area of 3887 m2/g and MOF-177 with an SSA of 4898 m2/g. Additionally, many of them have been examined for practical usage in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, and energy storage-related applications, yielding satisfactory results.

Recent advances in application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbent and catalyst in removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the aquatic environment is causing widespread concern due to their bioaccumulation, toxicity, and possible environmental risk. These contaminants are produced daily in large quantities and released into water bodies. Traditional wastewater treatment plants are ineffective at degrading these pollutants. As a result, the development of long-term and effective POP removal techniques is critical. In water, adsorption removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs have been identified as energy and cost-efficient solutions. Both technologies have received a lot of attention for their efforts to treat the world's wastewater. Photocatalytic removal of POPs is a promising, effective, and long-lasting method, while adsorption removal of persistent POPs represents a simple, practical method, particularly in decentralized systems and isolated areas. It is critical to develop new adsorbents/photocatalysts with the desired structure, tunable chemistry, and maximum adsorption sites for highly efficient removal of POPs. As a class of recently created multifunctional porous materials, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer tremendous prospects in adsorptive removal and photocatalytic degradation of POPs for water remediation. This review defines POPs and discusses current research on adsorptive and photocatalytic POP removal using emerging MOFs for each type of POPs.

Construction of multifunctional NH2-UiO-66 metal organic framework: sensing and photocatalytic degradation of ketorolac tromethamine and tetracycline in aqueous medium

Existence of pharmaceutical residues in water has endangered environmental pollution worldwide, which makes it ineludible to develop prospective bifunctional materials which not only possess excellent fluorescence behaviour to monitor pharmaceuticals but also exhibit simultaneous photocatalytic removal efficiency. Strengthened by functionalized metal organic framework (MOF) materials, we present here an amine functionalized zirconium-based MOF NH₂-UiO-66 which has been successfully synthesized using solvothermal approach. The as prepared MOF was subjected to numerous structural, morphological and compositional characterizations. Interestingly, featured by the excellent fluorescent intensity of MOF modulated by LMCT effect, NH₂-UiO-66 was screened to detect pharmaceutical compounds with KTC and TC in aqueous solution. The prepared functionalized MOF showcased excellent sensing platform with magnificent response range (0‒3 µM), lower limit of detection (160 nM; KTC and 140 nM; TC), excellent selectivity and influential anti-interference capability. More importantly, the practical utility of the proposed sensor was further explored for the determination of pharmaceutical drugs in real water samples with suitable recoveries. Simultaneously, the synthesized MOF also exhibited high photocatalytic efficiency towards the removal of KTC and TC under solar light irradiation. The degradation efficiency for KTC and TC was found to be 68.3% and 71.8% within 60 and 280 min of solar light, respectively. Moreover, excellent recyclability was demonstrated by the current synthesized system over five cycles. Overall, this study presents a feasible route for the utilization of functionalized MOFs as potential dual functional materials towards the simultaneous detection and degradation of specific pharmaceuticals from aqueous medium.

Non-Calcined Layer-Pillared Mn0.5Zn0.5 Bimetallic-Organic Framework as a Promising Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Electrocatalytic generation of oxygen is of great significance for sustainable, clean, and efficient energy production. Multiple electron transfer in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and its slow kinetics represent a serious hedge for efficient water splitting, requiring the design and development of advanced electrocatalysts with porous structures, high surface areas, abundant electroactive sites, and low overpotentials. These requisites are common for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and derived materials that are promising electrocatalysts for OER. The present work reports on the synthesis and full characterization of a heteroleptic 3D MOF, [Zn₂(μ₄-odba)₂(μ-bpdh)]_n·nDMF (Zn-MUM-1), assembled from 4,4'-oxydibenzoic acid and 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-3,4-diaza-2,4-hexadiene (bpdh). Besides, a series of heterometallic MnZn-MUM-1 frameworks (abbreviated as Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-MUM-1, Mn_0.66Zn_0.33-MUM-1, and Mn_0.33Zn_0.66-MUM-1) was also prepared, characterized, and used for the fabrication of working electrodes based on Ni foam (NF), followed by their exploration in OER. These noble-metal-free and robust electrocatalysts are stable and do not require pyrolysis or calcination while exhibiting better electrocatalytic performance than the parent Zn-MUM-1/NF electrode. The experimental results show that the Mn_0.5Zn_0.5-MUM-1/NF electrocatalyst features the best OER activity with a low overpotential (253 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) and Tafel slope (73 mV dec^-1) as well as significant stability after 72 h or 6000 cycles. These excellent results are explained by a synergic effect of two different metals present in the Mn-Zn MOF as well as improved charge and ion transfer, conductivity, and stability characteristics. The present study thus widens the application of heterometallic MOFs as prospective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for OER.

Flame-retardant activity of ternary integrated modified boron nitride nanosheets to epoxy resin

In order to improve the fire safety of epoxy resin, ZIF-8 nanoparticle in-situ decorated boron nitride nanosheet (BN-OH/ZIF-8) is fabricated via self-assembly method and then ternary integrated BN-OH/ZIF-8/PA hybrids are prepared through the chemical etching effect of phytic acid. FTIR, XRD, XPS, TEM and TGA measurements are used to characterize the structure and morphology of the nanohybrids. The researches show that BN-OH/ZIF-8/PA not only uniformly distributed in EP matrix, but also improve the thermal stability of EP. The peak heat release rate, peak smoke production rate, total smoke production values, the fire growth index and peak CO production rate obtained from cone test are significantly decreased, demonstrating the reduction of the fire hazards of EP composites containing BN-OH/ZIF-8/PA. The nano barrier effect and catalytic activity of BN-OH/ZIF-8/PA may be conducive to suppress the release of combustible volatile products and heat, facilitate the formation of graphitized carbon layer, and protect matrix from flame damage. The ternary integrated method developed in this study explores a new way to improve the flame retardant properties of EP, thereby promoting its application range.

State of the art on the ultrasonic-assisted removal of environmental pollutants using metal-organic frameworks

The environmental and health issues of drinking water and effluents released into nature are among the major area of contention in the past few decades. With the growth of ultrasound-based approaches in water and wastewater treatment, promising materials have also been considered to employ their advantages. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are among the porous materials that have received great attention from researchers in recent years. Features such as high porosity, large specific surface area, electronic properties like semi-conductivity, and the capacity to coordinate with the organic matter have resulted in a substantial increase in scientific researches. This work deals with a comprehensive review of the application of MOFs for ultrasonic-assisted pollutant removal from wastewater. In this regard, after considering features and synthesis methods of MOFs, the mechanisms of several ultrasound-based approaches including sonocatalysis, sonophotocatalysis, and sono-adsorption are well assessed for removal of different organic compounds by MOFs. These methods are compared with some other water treatment processes with the application of MOFs in the absence of ultrasound. Also, the main concern about MOFs including environmental hazards and water stability is fully discussed and some techniques are proposed to reduce hazardous effects of MOFs and improve stability in humid/aqueous environments. Economic aspects for the preparation of MOFs are evaluated and cost estimates for ultrasonic-assisted AOP approaches were provided. Finally, the future outlooks and the new frontiers of ultrasonic-assisted methods with the help of MOFs in global environmental pollutant removal are presented.

Fabrication of Zn-MOF/ZnO nanocomposites for room temperature H2S removal: Adsorption, regeneration, and mechanism

Zn-MOF/ZnO nanocomposites with different organic linkers were fabricated by a rapid ultrasonication method using freshly prepared Zn(OH)₂ precipitate. The high metal-to-ligand ratio led to the simultaneous formation of MOFs and ZnO nanoparticles in the MOFs. The surface area was in the range of 12-21 m² g^-1. The nanocomposites were tested for H₂S adsorption at room temperature, where the maximum adsorption capacity of 14.2 mg g^-1 was recorded for ZnBTC/ZnO in dry conditions. The spent adsorbents were regenerated using methanol and UV irradiation as individual and combined strategies. The successive effect of methanol and UV radiation led to an increased adsorption capacity in the second cycle. The spectroscopic investigation of spent ZnBDC/ZnO confirmed the chemisorption of H₂S over Zn-sites via Zn²⁺-S^2- interaction. The XPS analysis of regenerated ZnBDC/ZnO confirmed a decreased sulfur content and decreased Zn ionic character. The regeneration work in this study is one of the first attempts and could be extrapolated to well-studied Zn-MOFs like MOF-5 for the desulfurization process.

Instantaneous Sonophotocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline over NU-1000@ZnIn2S4 Core-Shell Nanorods as a Robust and Eco-friendly Catalyst

The universal pollution of diverse water bodies and declined water quality represent very important environmental problems. The development of new and efficient photocatalytic water treatment systems based on the Z-scheme mechanisms can contribute to tackling such problems. This study reports the preparation, full characterization, and detailed sonophotocatalytic activity of a new series of hybrid NU@ZIS nanocomposites, which comprise a p-n heterojunction of 3D Zr(IV) metal-organic framework nanorods (NU-1000) and photoactive ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) nanostars. Among the obtained materials with varying content of ZIS (5, 10, 20, and 30%) on the surface of NU-1000, the NU@ZIS20 nanocomposite revealed an ultrahigh catalytic performance and recyclability in a quick visible-light-induced degradation of the tetracycline antibiotic in water under sonophotocatalytic conditions. Moreover, increased activity of NU@ZIS20 can be ascribed to the formation of a p-n heterojunction between NU-1000 and ZIS, and a synergistic effect of these components, leading to a high level of radical production, facilitating a Z-scheme charge carrier transfer and reducing the recombination of charge carriers. The radical trapping tests revealed that ^•OH, ^•O₂^-, and h⁺ are the major active species in the sonophotocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. Possible mechanism and mineralization pathways were introduced. Cytotoxicity of NU@ZIS20 and aquatic toxicity of water samples after tetracycline degradation were also assessed, showing good biocompatibility of the catalyst and efficacy of sonophotocatalytic protocols to produce water that does not affect the growth of bacteria. Finally, the obtained nanocomposites and developed photocatalytic processes can represent an interesting approach toward diverse environmental applications in water remediation and the elimination of other types of organic pollutants.

Ultrasound irradiation effect on morphological and adsorptive properties of a nanoscale 3D Zn-coordination polymer and derived oxide

In this work, Zn-based coordination polymer [Zn₂(1,3-bdc)bzim₂]_n was successfully synthesized by the sonochemical method using a 13 mm probe-type ultrasound operating at 20 kHz and amplitudes of 30, 40 and 50% corresponding to an acoustic power of 5.5, 8.6, and 10.3 W, respectively. Additionally, a sample was prepared by the slow-diffusion method for comparison. The samples were characterized by FTIR, PXRD, SEM, and BET techniques. The influence of the time and sonication amplitude on the yield of the reaction, crystallite size, and morphology were also studied. It was found that the sonochemical method provided the desired product in 83.9% within 20 min of sonication using the highest level of sonication amplitude. Moreover, this approach resulted in regular, controlled morphology, smaller particles, and higher surface area of the Zn-sample and derived oxide, than the slow diffusion method. The samples prepared by different methodologies were tested for the adsorption of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) components in six different systems, and the uptakes were quantified by ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. Both samples showed excellent adsorption of benzene, 119.8 mmol/g, and 88.1 mmol/g, for the coordination polymers prepared via the sonochemical and slow-diffusion methods, respectively, corresponding to 63.9%, and 46.9%. These results are in agreement with the non-polar surface of these samples.

A Critical Review on Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites as Advanced Materials for Adsorption and Photocatalytic Degradation of Emerging Organic Pollutants from Wastewater

Water-borne emerging pollutants are among the greatest concern of our modern society. Many of these pollutants are categorized as endocrine disruptors due to their environmental toxicities. They are harmful to humans, aquatic animals, and plants, to the larger extent, destroying the ecosystem. Thus, effective environmental remediations of these pollutants became necessary. Among the various remediation techniques, adsorption and photocatalytic degradation have been single out as the most promising. This review is devoted to the compilations and analysis of the role of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites as potential materials for such applications. Emerging organic pollutants, like dyes, herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and perfluorinated alkyl substances, have been extensively studied. Important parameters that affect these processes, such as surface area, bandgap, percentage removal, equilibrium time, adsorption capacity, and recyclability, are documented. Finally, we paint the current scenario and challenges that need to be addressed for MOFs and their composites to be exploited for commercial applications.

Waste sludge from shipping docks as a catalyst to remove amoxicillin in water with hydrogen peroxide and ultrasound

The waste sludge from shipping docks contains important elements that can be used as a catalyst after proper processing. The purpose of this study was to remove of amoxicillin (AMX) from the aquatic environment using waste sludge from shipping docks as catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide/ultrasound waves. The catalyst was produced by treating waste sludge at 400 °C for 2 h. N₂ adsorption, SEM, XRD, XRF, and FTIR techniques characterized the structural and physical properties of the catalyst. The BET-specific surface area of the catalyst reduced after AMX removal from 4.4 m²/g to 3.6 m²/g. To determine the optimal removal conditions, the parameters of the design of experiments were pH (5-9), contaminant concentration (5-100 mg/L), catalyst dosage (0.5-6 g/L), and concentration of hydrogen peroxide (10-100 mM). The maximum removal of AMX (98%) was obtained in the catalyst/hydrogen peroxide/ultrasound system at pH 5, catalyst dose of 4.5 g/L, H₂O₂ concentration of 50 mM, AMX concentration of 5 mg/L, and contact time of 60 min. The kinetics of removal of AMX from urine (k = 0.026 1/min), hospital wastewater (k = 0.021 1/min), and distilled water (k = 0.067 1/min) followed a first-order kinetic model (R²>0.91). The catalyst was reused up to 8 times and the AMX removal decreased to 45% in the last use. The byproducts and reaction pathway of AMX degradation were also investigated. The results clearly show that to achieve high pollutant removal rate the H₂O₂/ultrasound and catalyst/ultrasound synergy plays a key role.

An Overview and Evaluation of Highly Porous Adsorbent Materials for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Phenols Removal from Wastewater

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenolic compounds had been widely recognized as priority organic pollutants in wastewater with toxic effects on both plants and animals. Thus, the remediation of these pollutants has been an active area of research in the field of environmental science and engineering. This review highlighted the advantage of adsorption technology in the removal of PAHs and phenols in wastewater. The literature presented on the applications of various porous carbon materials such as biochar, activated carbon (AC), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphene as potential adsorbents for these pollutants has been critically reviewed and analyzed. Under similar conditions, the use of porous polymers such as Chitosan and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been well presented. The high adsorption capacities of advanced porous materials such as mesoporous silica and metal-organic frameworks have been considered and evaluated. The preference of these materials, higher adsorption efficiencies, mechanism of adsorptions, and possible challenges have been discussed. Recommendations have been proposed for commercialization, pilot, and industrial-scale applications of the studied adsorbents towards persistent organic pollutants (POPs) removal from wastewater.

Dual-Purpose 3D Pillared Metal-Organic Framework with Excellent Properties for Catalysis of Oxidative Desulfurization and Energy Storage in Asymmetric Supercapacitor

This study proposes an approach for improving catalysis of oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of diesel fuel under mild reaction conditions and enhancing supercapacitor (SC) properties for storage of a high amount of charge. Our approach takes advantage of a novel dual-purpose cobalt(II)-based metal-organic framework (MOF), [Co(2-ATA)₂(4-bpdb)₄] _n (2-ATA: 2-aminoterephthalic acid and 4-bpdb: N, N-bis-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-hydrazine as the pillar spacer), which is called NH₂-TMU-53. Due to the stability of the used compound, we decided to evaluate the capability of this compound as a novel electrode material for storing energy in supercapacitors, and also to investigate its catalytic capabilities. It is demonstrated that the addition of H₂O₂ as an oxidant enhances the efficiency of sulfur removal, which indicates that NH₂-TMU-53 can efficiently catalyze the ODS reaction. According to the kinetics results, the catalyzed process follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and exhibits 15.57 kJ mol^-1 activation energy. Moreover, with respect to the radical scavenging evaluations, the process is governed by direct catalytic oxidation rather than indirect oxidative attack of radicals. Furthermore, NH₂-TMU-53 was applied as an electrode material for energy storage in SCs. This material is used in the three-electrode system and shows a specific capacitance of 325 F g^-1 at 5 A g^-1 current density. The asymmetric supercapacitor of NH₂-TMU-53//activated carbon evaluates the further electrochemical activity in real applications, delivers the high power density (2.31 kW kg^-1), high energy density (50.30 Wh kg^-1), and long cycle life after 6000 cycles (90.7%). Also, the asymmetric supercapacitor practical application was demonstrated by a glowing red light-emitting diode and driving a mini-rotating motor. These results demonstrate that the fabricated device presents a good capacity for energy storage without pyrolyzing the MOF structures. These findings can guide the development of high-performance SCs toward a new direction to improve their practical applications and motivate application of MOFs without pyrolysis or calcination.

Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and ultrasound: A review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received a lot of attention due to their unique properties and abundant functionalities. Permanent porosity and high surface area are just a few traits that have made them attractive to researchers. They can be prepared as task-specific materials by exploiting the functional group variety and tuning their size and geometry. The main purpose of this review is to present an alternative method of preparing MOF crystals and underline the advantages of ultrasound assisted (sonochemical) synthesis. State of the art ultrasound assisted techniques for the preparation of MOFs in nanoscale are presented. Optimization of morphology and particle size is highlighted throughout this work, as we discuss the effects of various factors, such as energy input, reagent concentration, adequate solvents, reaction time and more.

Synthesis of a nanostructured pillar MOF with high adsorption capacity towards antibiotics pollutants from aqueous solution

In this study, various sonochemical conditions were applied to prepare the microsheets, nanosheets and nanoflowers of a metal-organic framework (MOF; [Zn₆(IDC)₄(OH)₂(Hprz)₂]_n) that is composed of Zn(II) cations coordinated with the linear N-donor piperazine (prz) and rigid planar imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate (H₃IDC) ligands. The PXRD patterns approved purity of the samples and the FT-IR spectra related the detected bonds and functional groups to [Zn₆(IDC)₄(OH)₂(Hprz)₂]_n crystals. The morphological results indicated that any changes in the synthesis conditions can affect nucleation and morphology of the nanostructures. The prepared MOF nanosheets and nanoflowers (with particle size average of 95 and 116 nm, respectively) were employed to adsorb the ampicillin, amoxicillin and cloxacillin antibiotics. Then, the MOFs were calcined at 550 ℃ and atmospheric pressure to produce ZnO nanoparticles and the resultant nanoparticles were adopted to photodegrade the antibiotics. These nanoparticles can photodegrade 37% of the amoxicillin compounds within 180 min. Among the examined samples, the nanoflowers demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity by eliminating 92.5%, 88% and 89% of the antibiotic molecules from the 60-ppm amoxicillin, ampicillin and cloxacillin solutions, respectively. Also, these nanoflowers are thermally stable up to 365 ℃. The associated adsorption process was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetics, in the case of amoxicillin.

Preparation of amine functionalized g-C3N4@H/SMOF NCs with visible light photocatalytic characteristic for 4-nitrophenol degradation from aqueous solution

At ambience temperature, a facile and large-scale sonochemical synthesis route was used to synthesize graphitic carbon nitride@[Ti₄C₂₄H₃₉N₃O₂₉] metal-organic framework nanocomposites (g-C₃N₄-X@^YTi-MIL125-NH₂ NCs, where X and Y stood for the weight percentages of g - C₃N₄ and the synthesis method of Ti-MIL125-NH₂, respectively) having 2-Amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (2-ATA) ligand with amine functional free groups. The obtained NCs were characterized by FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, BET, UV-DRS, PL, EIS, and zeta potential. Moreover, g-C₃N₄-X@^YTi-MIL125-NH₂ capability to eliminate 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) contaminant from water via visible light illumination was explored. Our synthesized NCs under a facile, green ultrasonic technique (i.e. g-C₃N₄-30@^STi-MIL125-NH₂) had a higher percentage of degradation than those from hydrothermal technique (i.e. g-C₃N₄-30@^HTi-MIL125-NH₂) with degradation percentages of 75% and 57%, respectively, which resulted in effective mass transfer and separation of photo - generated charge carriers. Additionally, this higher percentage of degradation could be attributed to the larger surface area and unique morphology of the ultrasonically synthesized particles with higher homogeneity and better and non-agglomerated distribution. Furthermore, excellent reusability and stability were observed for g-C₃N₄-30@^STi-MIL125-NH₂. We also explored the role of some scavengers in the degradation procedures to investigate the effect of active species. The experimental results were used to describe the suggested mechanism capability for improved photocatalysis.

Highly efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol over CeO2/g-C3N4 composites under visible-light irradiation: Detailed reaction pathway and mechanism

Herein, we report for the first time the highly efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) over CeO₂/g-C₃N₄ composites (xCeO/CN) prepared via wet-chemical solution method. It is shown that the resultant nanocomposites with a proper mass ratio percentage (15%) of CeO coupled exhibit greatly enhanced visible-light activity for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation compared to the bare g-C₃N₄. From photoluminescence (PL) and Fluorescence (FL) results, it is suggested that enhanced photo-degradation is attributed to the significantly improved charge separation and transfer as a result of the proper band alignments between g-C₃N₄ and CeO components. Further, from radical trapping experiments, it is confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (OH) are the predominant oxidants involved in the degradation of 2,4-DCP over CeO/CN composites. Furthermore, a possible reaction pathway and detailed photocatalytic mechanism for 2,4-DCP degradation is proposed mainly based on the detected liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) intermediate products, that readily transform into CO₂ and H₂O. This work would help researchers to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of 2,4-DCP and would provide feasible routes to fabricate g-C₃N₄-based highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Hierarchical CuAl-layered double hydroxide/CoWO4 nanocomposites with enhanced efficiency for use in supercapacitors with long cycling stability

A CuAl-LDH/CoWO₄ nanocomposite was used in an asymmetric supercapacitor, providing 35.87 W h kg⁻¹ energy density and 10 188 W kg⁻¹ power density.

Fast ultrasound-assisted synthesis of highly crystalline MIL-88A particles and their application as ethylene adsorbents

Highly crystalline MIL-88A particles have been successfully synthesized via fast ultrasound-assisted processes. The influence of the sonication generator and synthesis time on the structure, crystallinity, morphology and surface area of the materials were studied in detail. Under this modified ultrasonic method, X-ray diffraction patterns of MIL-88A particles showed highly crystalline structures in contrast to those reported in literature. Significant differences on surface areas and microporosity were appreciated under ultrasound conditions employed. Specific surface areas in the range between 179 and 359 m² g^-1 were obtained. That material synthesized under ultrasound batch conditions during 1 h had the highest surface area and microporous character. Different particle sizes and morphologies were obtained depending on the synthesis procedure. In general, probe sonicators led to smaller particle sizes. Moreover, a comparative study of the ethylene adsorption of the MIL-88A particles and several common MOFs in the ethylene adsorption was investigated. The results suggest that the modified ultrasound-assisted procedure for the synthesis of MIL-88A is effective to obtain highly crystalline particles, which are very efficient to adsorb ethylene molecules.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of NiFe- layered double hydroxides as efficient electrode materials in supercapacitors

Under ultrasound irradiation, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanostructures with three molar ratios and three dissimilar reaction times were prepared. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to characterize the synthesized nanomaterials. Using a sonochemichal route, various morphologies of the NiFe-LDH nanostructures without any impurity and variations in the structure were produced. During the optimization process, it was found that sonication time and reagent concentration in a fixed irradiation frequency can affect the size and the morphology of the produced nanostructures. Under ultrasound irradiation, non-aggregated particles with uniform, spherical morphology were obtained with molar ratios of 4:1 (Ni:Fe) with 45 W at 180 min. The NiFe-LDH samples were observed to be supercapacitor under a 6 M KOH solution. When morphologically-controlled NiFe-LDH samples were used, the pseudo-capacitive behavior of the nanostructures was tuned. After 3 h of ultrasonic irradiation, the optimized sample (NiFe-LDH spherical nanostructures with 4:1 M ratio) had a high value of specific capacitance (168F g^-1).

Ultrasound assisted facile synthesis of Mn(II) and Cu(II) coordination polymers and their use as precursors for α-Mn3O4 and CuO nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization and catalytic properties

A self-assembly of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate with Cu(II) and Mn(II) under ultrasonic and microwave irradiation gave the two coordination polymers [Cu(PDA)(H₂O)_1.5]n (1) and [Mn(PDA)(H₂O)_1.5]n (2). Their structures were characterized using IR, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and spectroscopic methods. The corresponding α-Mn₃O₄ and CuO nanoparticles were synthesized by calcination of 1 and 2 in air at 600 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals a sphere-like morphology for the Mn₃O₄ nanoparticles. Shrinkage of the particle size from 90 nm (by conventional synthesis of the precursor) to 19 nm (ultrasonic-assisted) takes place, indicating the great effect of ultrasonication. CuO nanoparticles were of semispherical (conventional and ultrasonic-assisted methods) and hexagonal shapes (microwave irradiation) with an average diameter of 7, 15 and 25 nm, respectively. The catalytic performance of the coordination polymers towards degradation of methylene blue and methyl orange in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied. Using the same dose, catalyst 1 proved to be more efficient in color removal of both MB and MO than catalyst 2 did. Recycling test for 2 showed that it is a recyclable catalyst with no structural changes over three recycling experiments.

Ultrasound-assisted preparation of a nanostructured zinc(II) amine pillar metal-organic framework as a potential sorbent for 2,4-dichlorophenol adsorption from aqueous solution

Using a green and simple route with ultrasound illumination under atmospheric pressure and at room temperature, the nanosized preparation of a Zn(II) metal-organic framework, [Zn(ATA)(BPD)]_∞ (ATA = 2-aminoterephthalic acid), BPD = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene), having nano-plate shape and 3D channel framework, was considered and the product was named as compound 1. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used for characterization of the synthesized micro/nano-structures. Further, impact of different sonication times and initial reagent contents on the shape and size of the micro/nano-structures was investigated. The results show that under ultrasound irradiation non-aggregated plates with uniform morphology can be obtained with content of [0.0125] M of the initial reagents in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) at 120 min. Moreover, through N₂ adsorption, effect of the preparation route on the porosity was explored. The bulk and nano-plates of compound 1 were also studied for adsorption of 2,4-dichlorophenol as a pollutant sample. Kinetic studies indicated that 2,4-dichlorophenol adsorption via MOF nano-plates are of first-order kinetics. Also, MOF nano-plates have significantly been reutilized for five times while their adsorption properties have remained unchanged.

The effect of different parameters under ultrasound irradiation for synthesis of new nanostructured Fe3O4@bio-MOF as an efficient anti-leishmanial in vitro and in vivo conditions

In this work, a magnetic bio-metal-organic framework (MBMOF) nanocomposite with porous-layer open morphology is synthesized through a simple sonochemical approach and its effects on Leishmania major (MRHO/IR/75/ER) under both in vitro and in vivo conditions are investigated. The effects of sonication time, initial concentration of reagents and sonication power on size and morphology of MBMOF nanocomposites have been investigated and optimized. A comparison was then made between the structural information of the nanostructures and that of the bio-metal-organic framework crystals. Using the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) techniques, the prepared MBMOF nanocomposites were characterized. The mean numbers of promastigotes (cell/ml) in different MBMOF concentrations (3.12, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 µg mL^-1) were determined by direct counting after 24, 48 and 72 h. Using MTT assays, the cytotoxic impacts of the MBMOF nanocomposites on promastigotes, intracellular amastigotes, and J774 macrophages were estimated. In order to investigate their therapeutic effects, the prepared MBMOF nanocomposites (25 and 12.5 µg mL^-1) were used as ointment three times a week to treat Leishmania major in BALB/c mice. The lesion size and weight of mice were assessed before and during the treatment. The parasitic loads were measured in spleen and liver through the culture. After 72 h, the INF-γ and IL-4 cytokines levels in the supernatant of the spleen culture were measured. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to attempt to synthesize the bio-MOFs through an in-situ sonosynthesis route under ultrasound irradiation and examine their cytotoxicity effects on Leishmania major under in vitro and in vivo conditions.
