Synthesis of poly(acrylamide-co-itaconic acid)/MWCNTs superabsorbent hydrogel nanocomposite by ultrasound-assisted technique: Swelling behavior and Pb (II) adsorption capacity

Bio-based nanocomposite hydrogels derived from poly (glycerol tartrate) and cellulose: Thermally stable and green adsorbents for efficient adsorption of heavy metals

The eco-friendly polymeric nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by incorporating dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS) and apple peel (AP) as reinforcements into the crosslinked polymer produced by cellulose (CL) and poly (glycerol tartrate) (TAGL) via gelation method and used for efficient adsorption of Pb2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ metal ions. DFNS and DFNS/TAGL-CL/AP samples were characterized by FESEM, FTIR, TEM, TGA, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption methods. The results of TGA analysis showed that the thermal stability of the prepared hydrogels improved significantly in the presence of DFNS. Both synthetic and environmental parameters were investigated and the adsorption capacity reached 560.2 (pH = 4) and 473.12 (pH = 5) mg/g for Pb2+ and Cu2+ respectively, using initial ion concentration of 200 mg/L. Also, the maximum adsorption capacity was 340.9, and 350.3 mg/g for Co2+ and Ni2+, respectively under optimum conditions (pH = 6, initial ion concentration of 100 mg/L). These experiments indicated that the DFNS/TAGL-CL/AP nanocomposite hydrogel has an excellent performance in removal of Pb2+ and can adsorb this toxic metal in only 30 min while the optimum contact time for other metals was 60 min. Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models were used to define the kinetic and adsorption isotherms, respectively and thermodynamic studies demonstrated that the adsorption was endothermic for Co2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+, exothermic for Pb2+, and spontaneous in nature for all metal ions. Furthermore, the reusability tests indicated that the hydrogels could maintain up to 93% of their initial adsorption capacity for all metal ions after four cycles. Therefore, the prepared nanocomposite hydrogels can be suggested as efficient adsorbents to remove the toxic metals from wastewater.

Synthesis of GG-g-P(NIPAM-co-AA)/GO and evaluation of adsorption activity for the diclofenac and metformin

The grafting of biopolymer gum ghatti (GG) over the PNIPAM and PAA was done and loaded with graphene oxide (GO). Aim of this work is carried out combine adsorption of sodium diclofenac (SD) and metformin (MF) by the prepared hydrogels under influence of various parameters. The adsorbent GG-g-P(NIPAM-co-PAA)/GO(3 mg) chosen for adsorption activity as it displayed highest swelling capacity. The effect of amount of both adsorbents GG-g-P(NIPAM-co-PAA and GG-g-P(NIPAM-co-PAA)/GO(3 mg) showed that highest adsorption capacity found at 40 mg of adsorbents for both drugs at conditions: 100 mg/L concentration, 30 °C, 24 h and pH 6 and subsequently became stable. Both the drugs were removed in greater amount at 25 mg/L concentration, 24 h of contact time, 30 °C, 40 mg amount of both adsorbents and pH 6. Effect of time revealed that as time elevated from 2 h to 12 (100 mg/L concentration,, 30 °C, 40 mg amount of both adsorbents and pH 6) led to increase adsorption efficiency and after that increase time did not much impact on adsorption activity. Adsorption activity of hydrogels declined with increase of temperature (100 mg/L concentration, 12 h, 40 mg amount of both adsorbents and pH 6). The acidic conditions favored adsorption of SD while MF adsorbed under the weak acidic(100 mg/L concentration, 30 °C, 12 h, 40 mg amount of both adsorbents). However, basic conditions did not much influence on adsorption of MF but effected on adsorption activity of SD. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic model suggested that adsorption is homogenous and chemical in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) found to be 289.01 and 154.55 mg/g for SD and MF respectively.

A review on the hydration properties of dietary fibers derived from food waste and their interactions with other ingredients: opportunities and challenges for their application in the food industry

Dietary fiber (DF) significantly affects the quality attributes of food matrices. Depending on its chemical composition, molecular structure, and degree of hydration, the behavior of DF may differ. Numerous reports confirm that incorporating DF derived from food waste into food products has significant effects on textural, sensory, rheological, and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, the characteristics of DF, modification techniques (chemical, enzymatic, mechanical, thermal), and processing conditions (temperature, pH, ionic strength), as well as the presence of other components, can profoundly affect the functionalities of DF. This review aims to describe the interactions between DF and water, focusing on the effects of free water, freezing-bound water, and unfreezing-bound water on the hydration capacity of both soluble and insoluble DF. The review also explores how the structural, functional, and environmental properties of DF contribute to its hydration capacity. It becomes evident that the interactions between DF and water, and their effects on the rheological properties of food matrices, are complex and multifaceted subjects, offering both opportunities and challenges for further exploration. Utilizing DF extracted from food waste exhibits promise as a sustainable and viable strategy for the food industry to create nutritious and high-value-added products, while concurrently reducing reliance on primary virgin resources.

Synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer as a nanosorbent for dispersive magnetic micro solid-phase extraction and determination of valsartan in biological samples by UV-Vis Spectrophotometry: Isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies

A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by precipitation polymerization utilizing Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-MPS as a magnetic core, itaconic acid as a functional monomer, azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross linker. It was then applied as a nanosorbent for dispersive magnetic micro solid phase extraction (DM-µ-SPE) and determination of valsartan in biological fluids. The morphology and structure of magnetic MIP were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Field Emission Scanning electron microscopy, Vibrating sample magnetometer, Energy dispersive x-ray analysis, and Thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of operation conditions on sorption, such as pH (4-10), contact time (10-25 min), initial concentration (1-30 mg L^-1), and temperature (25-40 °C) was investigated. After the extraction step, the valsartan concentration was determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 253 nm. The isotherm and kinetic of valsartan sorption were best fitted by the Langmuir model (R² = 0.987) and the Pseudo second-order kinetic model (R² = 0.971), respectively. The maximum monolayer sorption capacity for magnetic MIP was obtained to be 4.56 mg g^-1. The analytical approach demonstrated favorable figures of merit, with a linear dynamic range of 10-100 µg L^-1, a low detection limit of 0.56 µg L^-1, and an acceptable preconcentration factor of 5 acquired in optimum conditions. The recoveries of the suggested technique at three spiked levels of analysis were in the range of 101 %-102 %. Valsartan was extracted from various real samples (urine and human blood plasma samples) utilizing the proposed magnetic nanosorbent, and the results exhibited that magnetic MIP was favorable for extraction and measurement of trace amounts of valsartan in biological samples.

Nanoporous hydrogel absorbent based on salep: Swelling behavior and methyl orange adsorption capacity

This study used the gas-blowing method to develop a nanoporous hydrogel using poly (3-sulfopropyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) grafted onto salep. The synthesis of the nanoporous hydrogel was optimized by various parameters for maximum swelling capacity. The nanoporous hydrogel was characterized using FT-IR, TGA, XRD, TEM, and SEM analyses. Images from SEM showed numerous pores and channels in the hydrogel with an average size of about 80 nm, forming a honeycomb-like shape. The change in surface charge was investigated by zeta potential and revealed that the surface charge of the hydrogel ranged from 20 mV at acidic conditions to -25 mV at basic conditions. The swelling behavior of optimum superabsorbent hydrogel was determined under different environmental conditions, such as different pH values, ionic strengths of the environment, and solvents. In addition, the swelling kinetics and the absorbance under loading of the hydrogel sample in different environments were investigated. Moreover, Methyl Orange (MO) dye was removed from aqueous solutions using the nanoporous hydrogel as an adsorbent. The adsorption behavior of the hydrogel was examined under various conditions, and the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel was found tobe 400 mg g^-1. The maximum water uptake was obtained under the following conditions: Salep weight = 0.01 g, AA = 60 μL, MBA = 300 μL, APS = 60 μL, TEMED = 90 μL, AAm = 600 μL, and SPAK = 90 μL. Lastly, the adsorption kinetics was studied by employing pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models.

Photocatalytic degradation of remdesivir nucleotide pro-drug using [Cu(1-methylimidazole)4(SCN)2] nanocomplex synthesized by sonochemical process: Theoretical, hirshfeld surface analysis, degradation kinetic, and thermodynamic studies

The first ultrasonic synthesis of [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] (L = 1-methylimidazole) nanocomplex was carried out under ultrasonic irradiation, and its photocatalytic performance for the degradation of remdesivir (RS) under sunlight irradiation was comprehensively investigated for the first time in this study. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized photocatalyst were examined by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The band gap of the synthesized [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex was determined to be 2.60 eV by the diffuse reflectance spectroscopy method using Kubelka-Munk formula. The photocatalytic performance of nanocomplex was examined for the removal of remdesivir under sunlight from water for which the results indicated that an amount of 0.5 gL^-1 of the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex was sufficient to remove more than 96% remdesivir from its 2 mg L^-1 concentration within 20 min, at pH = 6. The kinetic data showed that the photodegradation onto the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex has a high correlation (0.98) with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The decrease in chemical oxygen demand (COD) (from 70.5 mg L^-1 to 36.4 mg L^-1) under optimal conditions clearly confirmed the mineralization of the RS drug. The values of ΔS° (-0.131 kJ mol^-1 K^-1) and ΔH° (-49.750 kJ mol^-1) were negative, indicating that the adsorption process was spontaneous and more favorable in lower temperatures. Moreover, the RS structure in the open shell state and the high HOMO and LUMO gaps based on the M06/6-31 + G (d) level of theory may be a confirmation of this fact. In addition, the Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA) of the crystal packing of the prepared complex was discussed in detail to evaluate the interactions between the crystal packings. The results of this study confirm that the [Cu(L)₄(SCN)₂] nanocomplex can be successfully used for the photodegradation of pharmaceutical contaminants.

Synthesis of Xanthan Gum Anchored α-Fe2O3 Bionanocomposite Material for Remediation of Pb (II) Contaminated Aquatic System

Increases in community and industrial activities have led to disturbances of the environmental balance and the contamination of water systems through the introduction of organic and inorganic pollutants. Among the various inorganic pollutants, Pb (II) is one of the heavy metals possessing non-biodegradable and the most toxic characteristics towards human health and the environment. The present study is focussed on the synthesis of efficient and eco-friendly adsorbent material that can remove Pb (II) from wastewater. A green functional nanocomposite material based on the immobilization of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles with xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer has been synthesized in this study to be applied as an adsorbent (XGFO) for sequestration of Pb (II). Spectroscopic techniques such as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were adopted for characterizing the solid powder material. The synthesized material was found to be rich in key functional groups such as -COOH and -OH playing important roles in binding the adsorbate particles through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). Based on the preliminary results, adsorption experiments were conducted, and the data obtained were applied to four different adsorption isotherm models, viz the Langmuir, Temkin, Freundlich and D-R models. Based on the high values of R² and low values of χ², the Langmuir isotherm model was found to be the best model for simulation of data for Pb (II) adsorption by XGFO. The value of maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (Q_m) was found to be 117.45 mg g^-1 at 303 K, 126.23 mg g^-1 at 313 K, 145.12 mg g^-1 at 323 K and 191.27 mg g^-1 at 323 K. The kinetics of the adsorption process of Pb (II) by XGFO was best defined by the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic aspect of the reaction suggested that the reaction is endothermic and spontaneous. The outcomes proved that XGFO can be utilized as an efficient adsorbent material for the treatment of contaminated wastewater.

Sodium Alginate/β-Cyclodextrin Reinforced Carbon Nanotubes Hydrogel as Alternative Adsorbent for Nickel(II) Metal Ion Removal

Water pollution issues, particularly those caused by heavy metal ions, have been significantly growing. This paper combined biopolymers such as sodium alginate (SA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to improve adsorption performance with the help of calcium ion as the cross-linked agent. Moreover, the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the hybrid hydrogel matrix was examined. The adsorption of nickel(II) was thoroughly compared between pristine sodium alginate/β-cyclodextrin (SA-β-CD) and sodium alginate/β-cyclodextrin immobilized carbon nanotubes (SA-β-CD/CNTs) hydrogel. Both hydrogels were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectral analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The results showed SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel exhibits excellent thermal stability, high specific surface area and large porosity compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel. Batch experiments were performed to study the effect of several adsorptive variables such as initial concentration, pH, contact time and temperature. The adsorption performance of the prepared SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel was comprehensively reported with maximum percentage removal of up to 79.86% for SA-β-CD/CNTs and 69.54% for SA-β-CD. The optimum adsorption conditions were reported when the concentration of Ni(II) solution was maintained at 100 ppm, pH 5, 303 K, and contacted for 120 min with a 1000 mg dosage. The Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model are the best fits to describe the adsorption behavior. A thermodynamic study was also performed. The probable interaction mechanisms that enable the successful binding of Ni(II) on hydrogels, including electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, coordination binding and host-guest interaction between the cationic sites of Ni(II) on both SA-β-CD and SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel during the adsorption process, were discussed. The regeneration study also revealed the high efficiency of SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel on four successive cycles compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel. Therefore, this work signifies SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel has great potential to remove Ni(II) from an aqueous environment compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel.

Environmentally friendly hydrogel: A review of classification, preparation and application in agriculture

Superabsorbent hydrogel (SH) is three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked hydrophilic polymer that can absorb and retain large quantities of water or other aqueous solutions. SH is made of water-affinity monomers and is widely used in biomedicine, wastewater treatment, hygiene and slow-release fertilizers (SRFs). This article focused on the preparation methods of SH, superabsorbent hydrogel composite and the application of SH in agriculture. By selecting various synthetic technologies and cross-linking agents, a series of chemical cross-linking or physical networks can be designed and tailored to meet specific applications. In view of the excellent characteristics of water absorption, biodegradability, water retention and slow-release capacity, SH occupies a dominant position in the SRFs market. In this work, the agricultural application of SH in double coated SRFs and nutrients carriers is also discussed. Some mechanisms related to the nutrient release were analyzed by mathematical models. In addition, some agronomic benefits of using superabsorbent hydrogels in improving water absorption, water holding capacity and increasing crop yields were also discussed. Although SH has certain shortcomings, from the perspective of long-term development, it will further show great potential in sustainable agriculture.

Assessing the compressive elasticity and multi-responsive property of gelatin-containing weakly anionic copolymer gels via semi-IPN strategy

A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogels based on acrylamide (AAm) and itaconic acid (ITA) was prepared in the presence of different amounts of the natural polymer gelatin (GLN). The semi-IPNs were synthesized by simultaneous polymerization using N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent. A pH-sensitive system was obtained by adding 2 mol% ITA as an anionic comonomer. The effect of GLN content by changing the amine/carboxyl functional groups and incorporating carboxyl groups of ITA in semi-IPN on the swelling, elasticity and physical properties of the hydrogels was investigated. The presence of GLN improved the thermal stability, and the GLN-containing semi-IPNs exhibited a higher degradation temperature compared to the GLN-free copolymers. The addition of a small amount of GLN could effectively increase the swelling of the semi-IPNs in water. By employing the GLN-containing semi-IPN as a model system, the solvent/matrix interactions were demonstrated to reveal the effect of solvent structure on the swelling-shrinkage response. The addition of GLN improved the pH-sensitivity of the semi-IPN gels, resulting in a clear response to pH change by action of NH₃⁺ and COOH of GLN and additional COOH groups from ITA. The mechanical performance of the copolymer network was improved by entangling PAAm/ITA chains with GLN, which acted as a reinforcement node. In terms of the effect of Hofmeister anions on the swelling behavior, the anion effect became more pronounced with salt concentration. The affinity of semi-IPNs towards the cationic dyes methylene blue and malachite green was tested and the dependence of the adsorption process on the initial dye concentration, contact time and GLN content was determined. This method presents a simple and efficient approach for the design of chemically crosslinked protein-based gels for drug delivery applications.

Precisely Tuning the Pore-Wall Surface Composition of Bioceramic Scaffolds Facilitates Angiogenesis and Orbital Bone Defect Repair

Orbital bone damage (OBD) may result in severe post-traumatic enophthalmos, craniomaxillofacial deformities, vision loss, and intracranial infections. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate advanced biomaterials that can match the individual anatomical structure and enhance OBD repair in situ. Herein, we aimed to develop a selective surface modification strategy on bioceramic scaffolds and evaluated the effects of inorganic or organic functional coating on angiogenesis and osteogenesis, ectopically and orthotopically in OBD models. It was shown that the low thermal bioactive glass (BG) modification or layer-by-layer assembly of a biomimetic hydrogel (Biogel) could readily integrate into the pore wall of the bioceramic scaffolds. The BG and Biogel modification showed appreciable enhancement in the initial compressive strength (∼30-75%) or structural stability in vivo, respectively. BG modification could enhance by nearly 2-fold the vessel ingrowth, and the osteogenic capacity was also accelerated, accompanied with a mild scaffold biodegradation after 3 months. Meanwhile, the Biogel-modified scaffolds showed enhanced osteogenic differentiation and mineralization through calcium and phosphorus retention. The potential mechanism of the enhanced bone repair was elucidated via vascular and osteogenic cell responses in vitro, and the cell tests indicated that the Biogel and BG functional layers were both beneficial for in vitro osteoblastic differentiation and mineralization on bioceramics. Totally, these findings demonstrated that the bioactive ions or biomolecules could significantly improve the angiogenic and osteogenic capabilities of conventional bioceramics, and the integration of inorganic or organic functional coating in the pore wall is a highly flexible material toolbox that can be tailored directly to improve orbital bone defect repair.

Hyaluronic Acid Methacrylate Hydrogel-Modified Electrochemical Device for Adsorptive Removal of Lead(II)

This paper presents the development of a compact, three-electrode electrochemical device functionalized by a biocompatible layer of hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) hydrogel for the adsorptive removal of detrimental lead (Pb(II)) ions in aqueous solutions. An adsorption mechanism pertaining to the observed analytical performance of the device is proposed and further experimentally corroborated. It is demonstrated that both the molecular interactions originating from the HAMA hydrogel and electrochemical accumulation originating from the electrode beneath contribute to the adsorption capability of the device. Infrared spectral analysis reveals that the molecular interaction is mainly induced by the amide functional group of the HAMA hydrogel, which is capable of forming the Pb(II)–amide complex. In addition, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) analysis indicates that the electrochemical accumulation is particularly valuable in facilitating the adsorption rate of the device by maintaining a high ion-concentration gradient between the solution and the hydrogel layer. ICP-MS measurements show that 94.08% of Pb(II) ions present in the test solution can be adsorbed by the device within 30 min. The HAMA hydrogel-modified electrochemical devices exhibit reproducible performance in the aspect of Pb(II) removal from tap water, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.28% (for n = 8). The experimental results suggest that the HAMA hydrogel-modified electrochemical device can potentially be used for the rapid, on-field remediation of Pb(II) contamination.

Development of a continuous fixed-bed column to eliminate cadmium(II) ions by starch-g-poly(acrylic acid)/cellulose nanofiber bio-nanocomposite hydrogel

This paper presents an experimental study on continuous adsorptive removal of Cd²⁺ from the water body using a bio-nanocomposite hydrogel within a fixed-bed column (FBC) system. The bio-nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized based on starch grafted poly(acrylic acid) (St-g-PAA) reinforced by cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The effects of processing conditions including pH, flow rate, and initial concentration of Cd²⁺ on adsorption efficiency were examined. Based on the results, the highest removal efficiency was achieved to be 82.5% at pH of 5, initial concentration of 10 mg L^-1, and flow rate of 5 mL min^-1. Furthermore, by applying isotherm models, it was uncovered that the Langmuir isotherm model was the most appropriate one, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 40.65 mg g^-1. Also, an adsorption process was carried out using the FBC system, and the outcome data were processed using Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models to find the characteristics of the column. In this study, the recovering capacity of the exhausted hydrogel was evaluated. Desorption process efficiencies of batch and continuous operations were obtained to be 91.9% and 90%, respectively.

Synthesis of Manganese Ferrite/Graphene Oxide Magnetic Nanocomposite for Pollutants Removal from Water

These days, environmental pollution, notably water pollution, has increasingly caused severe human health problems. The major water pollutants are heavy metals. MnFe2O4/GO nanocomposite was prepared in the current work via in situ method and tested to remove lead ion Pb2+ and neutral red (NR) dye from water. The prepared nanocomposite was characterized using different techniques, including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The prepared nanocomposite showed high adsorption capacity toward Pb2+ and NR dye removal according to Langmuir fitting indicating the monolayer homogeneous adsorption of pollutants over the adsorbent surface and can be separated easily with an external magnet. The effect of different factors, including contact time, pH, initial concentration, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption, were also studied. The increased concentration of pollutants led to increased adsorption capacity from 63 to 625 mg/g for Pb2+ ions and from 20 to 90 mg/g for NR dye. The increased adsorbent dose led to increased removal efficiency from 39% to 98.8% and from 63% to 94% for Pb2+ and NR dye, respectively. The optimum pH for the adsorption of both pollutants was found to be 6.0. The reusability of MnFe2O4/GO nanocomposite was studied for up to five cycles. The nanocomposite can keep its efficiency even after the studied cycles. So, the prepared magnetic nanocomposite is a promising material for water treatment.

Preparation and Characterization of Sodium Alginate-Based Oxidized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Hydrogel Nanocomposite and its Adsorption Behaviour for Methylene Blue Dye

Herein, a sodium alginate/poly (acrylic acid)/oxidized-multi-walled carbon nanotubes hydrogel nanocomposite (SA/p(AAc)/o-MWCNTs HNC) was synthesized by in situ free-radical polymerization method. The synthesized SA/p(AAc)/o-MWCNTs HNC was used to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The synthesized HNC was confirmed by employing various characterization techniques. The SA/p(AAc)/o-MWCNTs HNC exhibited a maximum swelling capacity of 2265.4% at pH 8.0. The influence of vital parameters in the sorption process including the initial pH, adsorption dose, contact time and concentration were systematically examined on a batch mode. Subsequently, adsorption kinetics as well as isotherm models were applied to assess the nature and mechanism of the adsorption process. Adsorption kinetics were best described by pseudo-second-order model, while the Langmuir isotherm model governed the adsorption isotherm. The SA/p(AAc)/o-MWCNTs HNC exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 1596.0 mg/g at 25°C. This adsorbent showed excellent MB uptake and good regeneration ability.

Preparation and swelling behavior of end-linked hydrogels prepared from linear poly(ethylene glycol) and dendrimer-star polymers

Linear diepoxide-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of molar mass 600, 1000 and 2000 g mol−1 was end-linked with dendrimer-star polymer (PAMAM) of generations 1.0 in water to prepare architecturally well-defined copolymer hydrogels. The structures and properties of the products were characterized using infrared, 1H NMR, DSC measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and swelling behavior tests. The swelling behavior of these hydrogels was tested in distilled water at constant temperature and the equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) was determined for structurally different hydrogels and various environmental conditions, which showed that ESR was influenced by the molecular weight of PEG, the molar ratio of H amine groups/epoxy groups, temperature and pH. Higher ESR was obtained for either longer-chain PEG, non-stoichiometric H amine/epoxy groups ratio, acidic pH or lower temperatures. When the hydrogel was switched from 10 °C to 65 °C and pH 3.5 to 11.5, the swelling behavior of the hydrogels showed good reversibility for swelling–deswelling. When the molecular weight of PEG was changed in the range of 600–2000, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of hydrogel increased from 30 to 40 °C. When the molar ratio of H amine/epoxy groups was changed, the LCST was not significantly changed.

Tailoring Cu substituted hydroxyapatite/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube composite coating on 316L SS implant for enhanced corrosion resistance, antibacterial and bioactive properties

The aim of the present work is to study the potential change in the antibacterial properties of Cu-hydroxyapatite/functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube (HA/f-MWCNT) composite coated heterogeneous implant surfaces against Gram positive and Gram-negative microorganism and to reveal the possible contribution of surface corrosion effects arising in stimulated body fluid. Novel spray pyrolysis instrument designed with double nozzle was used for the fabrication of Cu-hydroxyapatite/f-MWCNT film on 316L stainless steel (SS). The Cu-hydroxyapatite/MWCNT coated bioimplant was characterized by a series of techniques to identify the crystallinity, chemical bonds, surface morphology and elemental composition. The results disclose that the coated implants exhibit highly crystalline nature with the space group of P6_3mc and spherical shaped morphology. The corrosion current density revealed a remarkable decrease from 6.8 to 3.8 μA suggesting that the Cu substituted hydroxyapatite/f-MWCNT composite coating provided higher barrier properties which is beneficial to achieve higher corrosion protection of 316L SS implant. The hybrid Cu-hydroxyapatite-MWCNT composite revealed better antibacterial ability than HA/MWCNT for both gram positive and gram-negative bacteria with a maximum inhibition zone of 13-17 mm, compared with hydroxyapatite/f-MWCNT. The antibacterial ability of the Cu-hydroxyapatite/f-MWCNT nanocomposites was effective against Escherichia coli compared with other microorganisms. The Cu-hydroxyapatite/f-MWCNT nanocomposite exhibited that the coated material is nontoxic, biocompatible and suitable for biomedical application.

The effects of carbon disulfide driven functionalization on graphene oxide for enhanced Pb(II) adsorption: Investigation of adsorption mechanism

The surface properties of graphene oxide (GO) have been identified as the key effects on the adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions in this study. This study reveals the effect of the surface reactivity of GO via Carbon Disulfide (CS₂) functionalization for Pb(II) adsorption. After successfully preparing CS₂ functionalized GO (GOCS), the specific techniques were applied to investigate Pb(II) adsorption onto GOCS. Results indicated that the new sulfur-containing functional groups incorporated onto GOCS significantly enhanced Pb(II) adsorption capacity on GOCS than that of GO, achieving an improvement of 31% in maximum adsorption capacity increasing from 292.8 to 383.4 mg g^-1. The equilibrium adsorption capacity for GOCS was 280.2 mg g^-1 having an improvement of 83.2% over that of 152.97 mg g^-1 for GO at the same initial concentration of 150 mg L^-1 under the optimal pH of 5.7. Moreover, the results of adsorption experiments showed an excellent fit to the Langmuir and Pseudo-Second-Order models indicating the monolayer and chemical adsorption, respectively. The mechanism for Pb(II) adsorption on GOCS was proposed as the coordination, electrostatic interactions, cation-pi interactions, and Lewis acid-base interactions. The regeneration study showed that GOCS had an appreciable reusability for Pb(II) adsorption with the adsorption capacity of 208.92 mg g^-1 after five regeneration cycles. In summary, GOCS has been proved to be a novel, useful, and potentially economic adsorbent for the high-efficiency removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

Processing and modification of hydrogel and its application in emerging contaminant adsorption and in catalyst immobilization: a review

Due to the wonderful property of hydrogels, they can provide a platform for a wide range of applications. Recently, there is a growing research interest in the development of potential hydrogel adsorbents in wastewater treatment due to their adsorption ability toward aqueous pollutants. It is important to prepare such a hydrogel that possesses appropriate robustness, adsorption capacity, and adsorption efficiency to meet the need of water treatment. In order to improve the property of hydrogels, much effort has been made by researchers to modify hydrogels, among which incorporating inorganic components into the polymeric networks is the most common method, which can reduce the product cost and simplify the preparation procedure. Not only can hydrogel be applied as adsorbent, but it also can be used as matrix for catalyst immobilization. In this review, the key advancement on the preparation and modification of hydrogels is discussed, with special emphasis on the introduction of inorganic materials into polymeric networks and consequential changes in the properties of mechanical strength, swelling, and adsorption. Besides, hydrogels used as adsorbents for removal of dyes and inorganic pollutants have been widely explored, but their use for adsorbing emerging contaminants from aqueous solution has not received much attention. Thus, this review is mainly focused on hydrogels' application in removing emerging contaminants by adsorption. Furthermore, hydrogels can be also applied in immobilizing catalysts, such as enzyme and photocatalyst, to remove pollutants completely and avoid secondary pollution, so their progress as catalyst matrix is overviewed.

Novel pectin based composite hydrogel derived from grapefruit peel for enhanced Cu(II) removal

Novel biochar/pectin/alginate hydrogel beads (BPA) derived from grapefruit peel were synthesized and used for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solution. FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD, TGA and XPS, etc. were applied for characterization analysis. The synergistic reinforcing effect of polymer matrix and biochar fillers improved the adsorptive, mechanical and thermostabilized performance of BPA. Factors like component contents of biochar and pectin, pH, contact time, Cu(II) concentration and coexisting inorganic salts or organic ligands were systematically investigated in batch mode. The adsorption isotherms were fitted well by the Freundlich model and the experimental maximum adsorption capacity of optimized BPA-9 beads (mass ratio of pectin to alginate = 10:1) with 0.25% biochar, was ∼80.6 mg/g at pH 6. Kinetic process was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and film diffusion primarily governed the overall adsorption rate, followed by intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamics analysis suggested spontaneous feasibility and endothermic nature of adsorption behavior. Moreover, BPA also showed better environmental adaptability in the presence of NaCl, MgCl₂, CaCl₂, EDTA-2Na and CA as well as good adsorption potential for other heavy metal [e.g. Pb(III)]. Crucially, the BPA beads showed good regeneration ability after five cycles. All these results indicated the potential of BPA for removing heavy metal from water.

Enhanced antibacterial and corrosion resistance properties of Ag substituted hydroxyapatite/functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube nanocomposite coating on 316L stainless steel for biomedical application

The present study reports the fabrication of silver substituted hydroxyapatite/functionalized multiwall carbon nanotube (Ag-HA/f-MWCNT) on 316L stainless steel (SS) implant by spray pyrolysis technique. XRD results show an enhanced crystallinity and crystallite sizes with increasing concentration of silver in HA/f-MWCNT. The vibrational spectral analysis revealed the presence of P-O stretching vibration of phosphate group (PO₄^3-) in all the samples. The morphology of Ag substituted HA/f-MWCNT coatings revealed regular rod-like particles arranged in the form of sheet exhibiting slight variation in the size of the particle with increasing the Ag concentration. All the samples indicate the presence of calcium, phosphor, carbon, silver and oxygen constituents in the coating surface. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the nanocomposite decreased from 0.25 mg to 0.125 mg with the increase of Ag concentration, and AO/EB results confirmed the mode of cell distraction. The 1 and 3 wt% Ag-HA/f-MWCNT nanocomposite revealed less toxic effect to the normal human osteoblast cells. The corrosion efficiencies of the fabricated films in the stimulated body fluid reveal the increase in polarization resistance with a decrease in current density (i_corr) from 3.9 to 3.5 μA due to the increase of Ag concentration. The estimated hemolysis rate for 1 and 3 wt% Ag substituted HA/f-MWCNT was less than 10%. Therefore, it can be concluded that 3 wt% Ag substituted HA/f-MWCNT coating on passivated 316L SS is nonhemolytic and most suited as a novel alternative to dental and orthopaedic implants.
