Summary of sulfur hazards in high‑sulfur bauxite and desulfurization methods

With the gradual depletion of high-grade bauxite, the development of the alumina industry has been seriously constrained. High‑sulfur bauxite reserves are abundant and can be used as an effective supplement to bauxite resources. Therefore, the development of desulfurization and comprehensive utilization methods for high sulfur bauxite has been widely studied. Excessive sulfur content in bauxite and complex valence changes in the Bayer process have serious impacts on products and equipment. This paper will introduce pre-treatment desulfurization and post-treatment desulfurization methods such as roasting, flotation, electrochemical and biological methods. Roasting methods use oxidative roasting to convert sulfur to sulfur dioxide-containing flue gas; flotation methods enrich pyrite through flotation chemicals; biological methods use complex chemical reactions of microorganisms to remove sulfur; and electrolysis methods convert sulfur to sulfate through oxidants produced by electrolysis. Post-treatment methods add precipitants such as zinc oxide to treat small amounts of sulfur entering the Bayer process. The reaction mechanism and development of various desulfurization methods are summarized, and the problems of these desulfurization methods are analyzed. The aim is to combine their advantages to develop economical and environmentally friendly desulfurization methods, and propose suggestions for the future resource utilization of high‑sulfur bauxite.

Advancing gasoline desulfurization: Multi-objective fuzzy optimization in systems technology

Ultrasonic-assisted oxidative desulfurization (UAOD) is utilized to lessen environmental problems due to sulfur emissions. The process uses immiscible polar solvents and ultrasonic waves to enhance desulfurization efficiency. Prior research focused on comparing the effectiveness of UAOD for gasoline using response surface methodology. This study evaluates the desulfurization efficiency and operating costs, including ultrasonic power, irradiation time, and oxidant amount to determine optimal conditions. The study used a multi-objective fuzzy optimization (MOFO) approach to evaluate the economic viability of UAOD for gasoline. It identified upper and lower boundaries and then optimized the desulfurization efficiency and operating costs while considering uncertainty errors. The fuzzy model employed max-min aggregation to optimize the degree of satisfaction on a scale from 0 (unsatisfied) to 1 (satisfied). Optimal conditions for gasoline UAOD were found at 445.43 W ultrasonic power, 4.74 min irradiation time, and 6.73 mL oxidant, resulting in a 66.79 % satisfaction level. This yielded a 78.64 % desulfurization efficiency (YA) at an operating cost of 13.49 USD/L. Compared to existing literature, gasoline desulfurization was less efficient and less costly. The solutions provided by MOFO demonstrate not only economic viability through decreased overall operating costs and simplified process conditions, but also offer valuable insights for optimizing prospective future industrial-scale UAOD processes.

Ultrasounds assisted one-pot oxidative desulfurization of model fuel using green synthesized aluminum terephthalate [MIL-53(Al)]

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is considered to be one of the most promising desulfurization processes as it is energy-efficient and requires mild operating conditions. In this study, a novel green synthesized Al- based metal-organic framework with high surface area has been synthesized hydrothermally using waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles (PET) as a source of terephthalic acid as an organic linker. The prepared Al based MOF have been characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The catalytic activity of the prepared Al-MOF was evaluated in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of both modeled and real crude oil samples. The different operating parameters (temperature, time, catalyst dose, oxidant loading and sonication) on the ODS performance have been optimized. The optimal conditions for maximum removal of thiophene from modeled oil samples were found to be 30 min, 0.5 g of catalyst and 1:3 oil to oxidant ratio. Under the optimized conditions, sulfur removal in real oil samples obtained from Alexandria petroleum company was 90%. The results revealed that, the presented approach is credited to cost-effectiveness, environmental benignity, and ease of preparation, predicting great prospects for desulfurization of fuel oils on a commercial level.

Ultrasonic Disintegration to Improve Anaerobic Digestion of Microalgae with Hard Cell Walls-Scenedesmus sp. and Pinnularia sp

Microalgae are considered to be very promising feedstocks for biomethane production. It has been shown that the structure of microalgal cell walls can be highly detrimental to the anaerobic digestibility of biomass. Therefore, there is a real need to seek ways to eliminate this problem. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of ultrasonic disintegration of Scenedesmus sp. and Pinnularia sp. microalgal biomass on the performance and energy efficiency of anaerobic digestion. The pretreatment was successful in significantly increasing dissolved COD and TOC in the system. The highest CH₄ yields were noted for Scenedesmus sp. sonicated for 150 s and 200 s, which produced 309 ± 13 cm³/gVS and 313 ± 15 cm³/gVS, respectively. The 50 s group performed the best in terms of net energy efficiency at 1.909 ± 0.20 Wh/gVS. Considerably poorer performance was noted for Pinnularia sp., with biomass yields and net energy gains peaking at CH₄ 250 ± 21 cm³/gVS and 0.943 ± 0.22 Wh/gVS, respectively. Notably, the latter value was inferior to even the non-pretreated biomass (which generated 1.394 ± 0.19 Wh/gVS).

Cavitation based cleaner technologies for biodiesel production and processing of hydrocarbon streams: A perspective on key fundamentals, missing process data and economic feasibility - A review

The present review emphasizes the role of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and acoustic cavitation in clean and green technologies for selected fuels (of hydrocarbon origins such as gasoline, naphtha, diesel, heavy oil, and crude oil) processing applications including biodiesel production. Herein, the role of cavitation reactors, their geometrical parameters, physicochemical properties of liquid media, liquid oxidants, catalyst loading, reactive oxygen species, and different types of emulsification and formation of radicals, formation as well as extraction of formed by-products are systematically reviewed. Among all types of HC reactors, vortex diode and single hole orifices revealed more than 95 % desulfurization yield and a 20 % viscosity reduction in heavy oil upgrading, while multi-hole orifice (100 holes) and slit Venturi allowed obtaining the best biodiesel production processes in terms of high (%) yield, low cost of treatment, and short processing time (5 min; 99 % biodiesel; 4.80 USD/m³). On the other hand, the acoustic cavitation devices are likely to be the most effective in biodiesel production based on ultrasonic bath (90 min; 95 %; 6.7 $/m³) and desulfurization treatment based on ultrasonic transducers (15 min; 98.3 % desulfurization; 10.8 $/m³). The implementation of HC-based processes reveals to be the most cost-effective method over acoustic cavitation-based devices. Finally, by reviewing the ongoing applications and development works, the limitations and challenges for further research are addressed emphasizing the cleaner production and guidelines for future scientists to assure obtaining comprehensive data useful for the research community.

Effect of Ultrasound Irradiation on the Properties and Sulfur Contents of Blended Very Low-Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO)

Quality issues concerning very low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) have increased significantly since the IMO sulfur-limit regulation became mandatory in 2020, as most VLSFO is produced by blending high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) with VLSFO. For instance, the conversion of VLSFO paraffins (C19 or higher alkanes) into waxes at low temperatures adversely affects cold flow properties. This study investigates the effects of ultrasonication on the chemical composition, dispersion stability, and sulfur content of samples prepared by blending ISO-F-DMA-grade marine gas oil (i.e., VLSFO) and ISO-F-RMG-grade marine heavy oil (i.e., HSFO) in volumetric ratios of 25:75 (BFO1), 50:50 (BFO2), and 75:25 (BFO3). The paraffin content decreased by 19.2% after 120 min of ultrasonic irradiation for BFO1 by 16.8% after 30 min for BFO3. The decrease in the content of high-molecular-weight compounds was faster at higher HSFO content; however, ultrasonication for longer-than-optimal times induced reaggregation, and thus, increased the content of high-molecular-weight compounds and decreased dispersion stability. In addition, ultrasonication did not significantly affect the sulfur content of BFO1 but decreased those of BFO2 (by 19% after 60 min) and BFO3 (by 25% after 30 min). Desulfurization efficiency increased with the increasing content of HSFO, as water present therein acted as an oxidant for oxidative desulfurization.

Sono-oxidative desulfurization of fuels using heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts: A comprehensive review

Recently, environmental pollution has increased significantly due to petroleum-based fuels widely used in vehicles. This environmental pollution is mainly due to the acidic SO₂ gas generated by the combustion of fuels and emitted into the atmosphere. SO₂ gas causes not only acid rain but also corrosion of metal parts of engines in vehicles. In addition, it functions as a catalyst poison in catalytic converters in exhaust system. Due to these damages, strict regulations have been introduced to reduce the amount of sulfur in fuels. As of 2005, the permissible amount of sulfur in diesel fuels in Europe and America has been limited to 10 and 15 ppm by weight, respectively. Due to the decreasing oil reserves in the world, high viscosity petroleums containing high sulfur and heavier fractions (i.e., low-quality oils) are increasing, thus making desulfurization difficult and leading to high costly process. Since time and economic loss are very important today, these two terms have to be reduced to a minimum. Recently, ultrasound wave in ODS shown as an alternative to HDS is utilized to further increase desulfurization in shorter times. Ultrasound wave locally creates high temperatures and high pressures (hot-spot theory) in liquid, causing the desulfurization reaction to accelerate further. In this review, the advantages and difficulties of oxidative desulfurization, the economics of ultrasound-assisted oxidative desulfurization are summarized and recommendations for improving the process are presented.

A Review of the Desulfurization Processes Used for Waste Tire Pyrolysis Oil

The increasing global population and the rapid industrial development associated therewith have increased the demand for fossil-derived fuel oils. The sources of fossil fuels are limited, and many studies have been being conducted to find alternative fuel sources. Waste tire pyrolysis oil (WTPO) attracts considerable attention as an alternative fuel because its properties are similar to those of diesel oil. However, WTPO has a high sulfur content of >1.0 wt%, which is above the environmental standard limit of 0.1 wt%; therefore, it cannot be used in engines directly. It is thus highly necessary to remove sulfur compounds from tire-derived oils. However, finding an appropriate and environmentally friendly process is proving difficult. This review article presents the various desulfurization methods used to removal sulfur from WTPO, such as hydrodesulfurization (HDS), oxidative desulfurization (ODS), ultrasound-assisted oxidative desulfurization (UAOD), and acid treatment. Of these, HDS is the most expensive as it involves high consumption of hydrogen, high temperature (~450 °C), and high pressure (~200 bar), whereas UAOD is an efficient and economic method of reducing the sulfur content of WTPO.

Ultrasonication-assisted synthesis of 2D porous MoS2/GO nanocomposite catalysts as high-performance hydrodesulfurization catalysts of vacuum gasoil: Experimental and DFT study

In this study, a novel, simple, high yield, and scalable method is proposed to synthesize highly porous MoS₂/graphene oxide (M-GO) nanocomposites by reacting the GO and co-exfoliation of bulky MoS₂ in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) under different condition of ultrasonication. Also, the effect of ultrasonic output power on the particle size distribution of metal cluster on the surface of nanocatalysts is studied. It is found that the use of the ultrasonication method can reduce the particle size and increase the specific surface area of M-GO nanocomposite catalysts which leads to HDS activity is increased. These nanocomposite catalysts are characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, STEM, HR-TEM, AFM, XPS, ICP, BET surface, TPR and TPD techniques. The effects of physicochemical properties of the M-GO nanocomposites on the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reactions of vacuum gas oil (VGO) has been also studied. Catalytic activities of MoS₂-GO nanocomposite are investigated by different operating conditions. M9-GO nanocatalyst with high surface area (324 m²/g) and large pore size (110.3 Å), have the best catalytic performance (99.95%) compared with Co-Mo/γAl₂O₃ (97.91%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also used to elucidate the HDS mechanism over the M-GO catalyst. It is found that the GO substrate can stabilize MoS₂ layers through weak van der Waals interactions between carbon atoms of the GO and S atoms of MoS₂. At both Mo- and S-edges, the direct desulfurization (DDS) is found as the main reaction pathway for the hydrodesulfurization of DBT molecules.

Removal of toxic arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) from industrial wastewater by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO4

Arsenic was one of toxic element in industrial wastewater. Removal of arsenic has always been a hot research topic in academia. Herein, arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) in industrial wastewater was removed by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with copper sulfate (CuSO₄). Secondary pollution would not be caused by the addition of zero-valent lead and copper sulfate. Parameters, such as Pb/As molar ratio, the amount of CuSO₄ added, reaction temperature, ultrasonic power and reaction time were investigated in this study. It was concluded that the removal of arsenic could be described by an unreacted shrinking nuclear model with activation energy 1.857 kJ/mol. The process of ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO₄ to remove arsenic was a diffusion controlled process. The precipitation after arsenic removal was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, XRF, and XPS to analyze the precipitated phases, topography, element content and different valence state of element. Based on the above analysis, the thermodynamic data and changes in ion concentration, the mechanism of efficient removal of arsenic (As(Ⅲ)) from industrial wastewater by ultrasonic enhanced zero-valent lead combined with CuSO₄ was revealed.

Mechanism of Ultrasonic Physical-Chemical Viscosity Reduction for Different Heavy Oils

In this study, the mechanism of physical-chemical viscosity reduction of different heavy oils under ultrasonic wave is explored. Experiments of viscosity reduction and viscosity recovery of different heavy oils under ultrasonic excitation were carried out, and the optimal ultrasonic parameters, ultrasonic physical disturbance, and cavitation viscosity reduction extent of different oil samples were determined. Based on the element analysis methods, four-component analysis, gas chromatography analysis, and formation water pH value test, the micro-mechanism of the oil chemical structure change and water samples under ultrasonic wave was analyzed. The results show that the water content, temperature, and initial viscosity of heavy oil are the key to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil. The higher viscosity of the initial oil sample, the higher water content, and the temperature were needed. Compared with the lower viscosity oil sample, the higher viscosity oil sample has higher extent of cavitation viscosity reduction and lower extent of physical disturbance viscosity reduction under ultrasonic wave. After ultrasonic treatment, the contents of heteroatoms, resins, and asphaltenes in heavy oil samples with high viscosity decreased significantly, and the conversion extent of high carbon chain to low carbon chain was greater. In addition, the pH of water in heavy oils decreased after ultrasonic treatment, and the pH of water in high viscosity heavy oil decreased more significantly after ultrasonic treatment.

Applying ultrasonic fields to separate water contained in medium-gravity crude oil emulsions and determining crude oil adhesion coefficients

Separating produced water is a key part of production processing for most crude oils. It is required for quality reasons, and to avoid unnecessary transportation costs and prevent pipework corrosion rates caused by soluble salts present in the water. A complicating factor is that water is often present in crude oil in the form of emulsions. Experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of ultrasonic fields in demulsifying crude oil emulsions using novel pipe-form equipment. A horn-type piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer with a frequency of 20 kHz and power ranging from 80 W to 1000 W was used for experimental purposes. The influences of the intensity of ultrasonic fields, ultrasonic irradiation time, and the initial water content of crude oils were evaluated to establish the rate of water segregation from oil. The experiments applied ultrasonic-field intensities of 0.25 W/cm³, 0.5 W/cm³, 0.75 W/cm³ and 1 W/cm³ to synthetic emulsions with 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% of the water in crude oil. Crude oil demulsification occurred for each ultrasonic field intensity tested for all the samples tested. Function β involving adhesion coefficients was expressed in terms of wave-field intensity and initial concentration of water in each of the three crude oil samples tested. The experiments demonstrated that despite the absence of any chemical demulsifier involved, water separation caused by applying ultrasonic fields was effective and occurred rapidly. As the intensity of the ultrasonic field applied increased, the amount of water segregated from crude oil also increased. Subjected to constant field intensity, higher initial water cuts (up to 15% or so) in the crude oil samples and higher ultrasonic irradiation times, resulted in greater segregation of water from crude oil in percentage terms. However, in samples with initial water cuts of 20+% long irradiation times (~5 min), resulted in a decline in water separation compared to 2-min tests. Ultrasonic field treatments offer commercially-viable and environmentally-friendly alternatives to treatments using chemical demulsifiers as they reduce desalination requirements of wastewater.
