Abstract
For each kilogram of food protein wasted, between 15 and 750 kg of CO2 end up in the atmosphere. With this alarming carbon footprint, food protein waste not only contributes to climate change but also significantly impacts other environmental boundaries, such as nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, global freshwater use, change in land composition, chemical pollution, and biodiversity loss. This contrasts sharply with both the high nutritional value of proteins, as well as their unique chemical and physical versatility, which enable their use in new materials and innovative technologies. In this review, we discuss how food protein waste can be efficiently valorized not only by reintroduction into the food chain supply but also as a template for the development of sustainable technologies by allowing it to exit the food-value chain, thus alleviating some of the most urgent global challenges. We showcase three technologies of immediate significance and environmental impact: biodegradable plastics, water purification, and renewable energy. We discuss, by carefully reviewing the current state of the art, how proteins extracted from food waste can be valorized into key players to facilitate these technologies. We furthermore support analysis of the extant literature by original life cycle assessment (LCA) examples run ad hoc on both plant and animal waste proteins in the context of the technologies considered, and against realistic benchmarks, to quantitatively demonstrate their efficacy and potential. We finally conclude the review with an outlook on how such a comprehensive management of food protein waste is anticipated to transform its carbon footprint from positive to negative and, more generally, have a favorable impact on several other important planetary boundaries.

Abstract
When approaching the study of new processes for leachate treatment, each influencing variable should be kept under control to better comprehend the treatment process. However, leachate quality is difficult to control as it varies dramatically from one landfill to another, and in line with landfill ageing. To overcome this problem, the present study investigated the option of preparing a reliable artificial leachate in terms of quality consistency and representativeness in simulating the composition of real municipal solid waste (MSW) leachate, in view of further investigate the recent treatment process using black soldier fly (BSF) larvae. Two recipes were used to simulate a real leachate (RL): one including chemical ingredients alone (artificial synthetic leachate-SL), and the other including chemicals mixed with artificial food waste (FW) eluate (artificial mixed leachate-ML). Research data were analysed, elaborated and discussed to assess simulation performance according to a series of parameters, such as Analytical representativeness, Treatment representativeness (in this case specific for the BSF larvae process), Recipe relevance, Repeatability and Flexibility in selectively modifying individual quality parameters. The best leachate simulation performance was achieved by the synthetic leachate, with concentration values generally ranging between 97% and 118% of the RL values. When feeding larvae with both RL and SL, similar mortality values and growth performance were observed.

Carbon Footprint and Total Cost Evaluation of Different Bio-Plastics Waste Treatment Strategies. CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES 2022. Abstract
To address the problem of fossil-based pollution, bio-plastics have risen in use in a wide range of applications. The current waste management system still has some weakness for bio-plastics waste (BPW) treatment, and quantitative data is lacking. This study combines environmental and economic assessments in order to indicate the most sustainable and suitable BPW management treatment between organic, plastic and mixed wastes. For the scope, the carbon footprint of each scenario was calculated by life cycle assessment (LCA), while the total cost of the waste management system was used as an economic parameter. The economic evaluation revealed that the organic, plastic and mixed waste treatment routes reached a total cost of 120.35, 112.21 and 109.43 EUR, respectively. The LCA results showed that the incomplete degradation of BPW during anaerobic digestion and composting led to the disposal of the compost produced, creating an environmental burden of 324.64 kgCO2-Eq. for the organic waste treatment route, while the mixed and plastic treatment routes obtained a benefit of −87.16 and −89.17 kgCO2-Eq. respectively. This study showed that, although the current amount of BPW does not affect the treatment process of organic, plastic and mixed wastes, it can strongly affect the quality of the output, compromising its further reuse. Therefore, specific improvement of waste treatment should be pursued, particularly with regard to the anaerobic digestion of organic waste, which remains a promising technology for BPW treatment.

Abstract
In order to mitigate the social and ecological impacts of post-consumer plastic made of conventional petrochemical polymers, the market of (bio)degradable plastics have recently become more widespread. Although (bio)degradable plastics could be an environmentally friendly substitute of petrochemical ones, the consequences of their presence in the waste management system and in the environment (if not correctly disposed) are not always positive and plastic pollution is not automatically solved. Consequently, this work aims to review how plastic (bio)degradability affects the municipal solid waste management cycle. To this end, the state-of-the-art of the intrinsic (bio)degradability of conventional and unconventional petrochemical and bio-based polymers has been discussed, focusing on the environment related to the waste management system. Then, the focus was on strategies to improve polymer (bio)degradability: different types of eco-design and pre-treatment approach for plastics has been investigated, differently from other works that focused only on specific topics. The information gathered was used to discuss three typical disposal/treatment routes for plastic waste. Despite many of the proposed materials in eco-design have increased the plastics (bio)degradability and pre-treatments have showed interesting results, these achievements are not always positive in the current MSW management system. The effect on mechanical recycling is negative in several cases but the enhanced (bio)degradability can help the treatment with organic waste. On the other hand, the current waste treatment facility is not capable to manage this waste, leading to the incineration the most promising options. In this way, the consumption of raw materials will persist even by using (bio)degradable plastics, which strength the doubt if the solution of plastic pollution leads really on these materials. The review also highlighted the need for further research on this topic that is currently limited by the still scarce amount of (bio)degradable plastics in input to full-scale waste treatment plants.

Abstract
To properly exploit short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the chemical industry, it is of foremost importance to ensure stable SCFA profile production via anaerobic fermentation (AF). The different macromolecular distribution of food wastes (FWs) used as feedstock might be crucial for process outcome. Targeting at a specific SCFAs profile and yield, this study explored the statistical correlation between the macromolecular composition of FWs and the produced SCFAs in batch-AFs at 25 °C and 55 °C. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that the carbohydrates fraction was directly related with butyric acid accumulation, regardless of process temperature. Nevertheless, operational temperature resulted in a pH change, which ultimately affected the process fate. PCA of 25 °C-batch-AF showed a positive correlation between high carbohydrate content and longer-chain acids accumulation. By contrast, 55 °C-AF resulted in higher product specificity than at 25 °C, mainly due to butyrate-type fermentation of carbohydrates. Batch results were further validated in a semicontinuous reactor. Prevailing SCFAs and high bioconversion efficiencies relied on 3 main FWs characteristics: high carbohydrate content (>77% w/w), high carbohydrate/protein ratio (≥10) and high soluble organic matter content. Results obtained herein allowed predicting a specific SCFAs profile based on FWs composition, which is relevant for setting proper downstream technologies.

Abstract
ABSTRACTAgroindustry generates huge amounts of wastes leading to environmental problems in the zones where they are disposed. One of the strategies for the valorization of these wastes is the acidogenic fermentation used to produce volatile fatty acids. In this study, four agroindustrial wastes generated in different Spanish industries were selected for evaluating their acidogenic potential in batch assays. The selected wastes were potato solid waste, grape marc distilled, grape marc and brewery spent grain. Potato solid waste and grape marc presented the highest degree of acidification (69% and 54%, respectively) with the predominance of acetic, butyric and propionic acids in their VFA profiles. In the potato solid waste, the influence of two parameters, substrate/inoculum ratio and initial alkalinity added, on the degree of acidification and on the VFA profile was evaluated. The maximum VFA production (higher than 70% of the total COD added) was obtained at substrate/inoculum ratios of 1.5 and 2.8 g VS substrate g-1 VS inoculum and at the highest concentration of initial alkalinity (3 g L-1 as CaCO3). Additionally, it was demonstrated that an increase of initial alkalinity, at all S/I ratios, can shift the VFA profile obtained, decreasing the relative amount of butyric and propionic acids and increasing the amount of acetic acid.

Abstract
Acidogenic fermentation is attractive for food waste valorisation. A better understanding is required on how operation affects product selectivity. This study demonstrated that the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) selected fermentation pathways in a single-stage, semi-continuous stirred tank reactor. Three combinations of HRT and OLR were tested to distinguish the effect of each parameter. Three fermentation profiles with distinct microbial communities were obtained. Predominantly n-butyric acid (13 ± 2 gCOD L-1, 55 ± 14% of carboxylates) was produced at an HRT of 8.5 days and OLR around 12 gCOD L-1d-1. Operating at an HRT two days longer, yet with similar OLR, stimulated chain elongation (up to 13.6 gCOD L-1 of n-caproic acid). This was reflected by a microbial community twice as diverse at longer HRT as indicated by first and second order Hill number (1D = 24 ± 4, 2D = 12 ± 3) and by a higher relative abundance of genera related to secondary fermentation, such as the VFA-elongating Caproiciproducens spp., and secondary lactic acid fermenter Secundilactobacillus spp.. Operating at a higher OLR (20 gCOD L-1d-1) but HRT of 8.5 days, resulted in typical lactic acid fermentation (34 ± 5 gCOD L-1) harbouring a less diverse community (1D = 8.0 ± 0.7, 2D = 5.7 ± 0.9) rich in acid-resistant homofermentative Lactobacillus spp. These findings demonstrate that a flexible product portfolio can be achieved by small adjustments in two key operating conditions. This improves the economic potential of acidogenic fermentation for food waste valorisation.

Abstract
In the past years, there has been steady growth in work relating to improve resource efficiency through waste minimization and bioenergy recovery to mitigate climate change. Agro-food industries produce large amounts of bio-waste, challenging innovative energetic valorization strategies in the framework of circular economy principles. Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology is an interesting route to stabilize organic matter and produce biogas as a renewable energy source. This study involves continuous co-digestion of pig slurry (PS), cereal and exhausted coffee wastes (CECW) performed in a continuously stirred tank reactor, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 16 days under at mesophilic conditions (36.9 ± 0.3°C). The experimental trials, were designed to include different cereal and exhausted coffee liquor (CECL) shares in the feeding mixture, corresponding to different PS to CECL ratios (PS:CECL), respectively: 100:0 (T0), 90:10 (T1), 80:20 (T2), and 70:30 (T3), in terms of percentage of inlet feeding rate (v:v). The results obtained for the feeding rate (70:30) yield to the highest specific methane production (SMP = 341 ml.gVS−1) led to a 3.5-fold improvement in comparison with the reference scenario. The synergetic effect between the microbial consortia of PS and the high carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) of CECL explain the improvements achieved. The maximum soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) reduction (84.0%) due to the high content and soluble chemical oxygen demand to total chemical oxygen demand ratio (SCOD/TCOD) corroborate the results achieved. The digester stability, evaluated by specific energetic loading rate, was below the limit (0.4 d−1). Results from ANOVA showed a significant effect of CECL on the resulting GPR and SMP values. Additionally, Tukey's “Honest Significant Difference” method, confirmed statistically significant differences between the trials T3-T0, T3-T1, T3-T2, and T2-T0. Thus, co-digestion of PS and of CECL seems to be a promising approach for bioenergy recovery and promoting biowastes circularity.

Abstract
Management of food waste (FW) is a global challenge due to increasing population and economic activities. Presently, landfill and incineration are the keyways of FW management, while economical and environmental sustainability have been an issue. Therefore, the biological processes have been investigated for resource and energy recovery from FW. However, these biological approaches have certain drawbacks and cannot be a complete solution for FW management. Therefore, this review aims to offer a detailed and complete analysis of current available technologies to achieve environmental and economical sustainability. In this context, zero solid waste discharge for resource and energy recovery has been put into view. Corresponding to which several innovative technologies using integrated biological methods for resource and energy recovery from FW have been elucidated.

Abstract
Global urbanization has resulted in amplified energy and material consumption with simultaneous waste generation. Current energy demand is mostly fulfilled by finite fossil reserves, which has critical impact on the environment and thus, there is a need for carbon-neutral energy. In this view, biohydrogen (bio-H2) is considered suitable due to its potential as a green and dependable carbon-neutral energy source in the emerging 'Hydrogen Economy'. Bio-H2 production by dark fermentation of biowaste/biomass/wastewater is gaining significant attention. However, bio-H2production still holds critical challenges towards scale-up with reference to process limitations and economic viabilities. This review illustrates the status of dark-fermentation process in the context of process sustainability and achieving commercial success. The review also provides an insight on various process integrations for maximum resource recovery including closed loop biorefinery approach towards the accomplishment of carbon neutral H2 production.

Abstract
The present work explored the production of volatile fatty acids through the anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge (SS) and cheese whey (CW). Two batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of the substrate mixing ratio (SS%:CW% of total COD of feedstock) and the initial pH on the acidogenic fermentation of SS with CW at different temperatures. The first batch experiment showed that a decrease of the SS proportion in the co-digestion with CW led to a higher degree of acidification observing a synergistic effect at a SS:CW mixing ratio of 25:75 (SS25:CW75). In the second batch experiment, three temperatures (30 °C, 38 °C and 50 °C) and two initial pH (5.5 and 9) were studied at SS60:CW40 and SS25:CW75 substrate mixing ratios. Maximum degrees of acidification of 56% and 73% were achieved, at 50 °C and initial pH of 5.5, for the SS60:CW40 and SS25:CW75 substrate mixing ratios, respectively. Finally, the performance of a semi-continuous reactor was demonstrated at laboratory scale reactor. Different hydraulic retention times (HRT) (10 and 20 days), pH (uncontrolled, 5.5 and 9) and the effect of a thermal pre-treatment of the SS was studied. The maximum degree of acidification in the lab-scale reactor was 45% at 37 °C, HRT of 20 days and pH of 5.5. Under these conditions, the volatile fatty acids (VFA) profile was dominated by butyric and acetic acids.

Abstract
Dependence on fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas are on alarming increase, thereby causing such resources to be in a depletion mode and a novel sustainable approach for bioenergy production are in demand. Successful implementation of zero waste discharge policy is one such way to attain a sustainable development of bioenergy. Zero waste discharge can be induced only through the conversion of organic wastes into bioenergy. Waste management is pivotal and considering its importance of minimizing the issue and menace of wastes, conversion strategy of organic waste is effectively recommended. Present review is concentrated on providing a keen view on the potential organic waste sources and the way in which the bioenergy is produced through efficient conversion processes. Biogas, bioethanol, biocoal, biohydrogen and biodiesel are the principal renewable energy sources. Different types of organic wastes used for bioenergy generation and its sources, anaerobic digestion-biogas production and its related process affecting parameters including fermentation, photosynthetic process and novel nano-inspired techniques are discussed. Bioenergy production from organic waste is associated with mitigation of lump waste generation and its dumping into land, specifically reducing all hazards and negativities in all sectors during waste disposal. A sustainable bioenergy sector with upgraded security for fuels, tackles the challenging climatic change problem also. Thus, intensification of organic waste conversion strategies to bioenergy, specially, biogas and biohydrogen production is elaborated and analyzed in the present article. Predominantly, persistent drawbacks of the existing organic waste conversion methods have been noted, providing consideration to economic, environmental and social development.

Abstract
The problem of waste disposal has recently focused on practices for waste recycling and bio-resources valorization. Organic waste produced in urban context together with biological sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be used as renewable feedstock for the production of building blocks of different products, from biopolymers to methyl esters. This paper deals with the optimization of the fermentation process in order to transform urban organic waste (a mixture of pre-treated food waste and biological sludge) into added-value volatile fatty acid (VFA) rich stream, useful for biological processes within a biorefinery technology chain. Different temperatures, pH, hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and organic loading rates (OLRs) were tested both in batch and continuous trials. Batch tests showed the best working conditions at 37 °C and pH 9, using the bio-waste feedstock thermally pre-treated (76 h at 72 °C). These conditions were applied in continuous process, where higher HRT (6.0 d) and lower OLR [7.7 kg VS/(m3 d)] gave the best performances in terms of process yield and maximum VFA level achieved: 0.77 CODVFA/VS(0) and 39 g CODVFA/L. An optimized fermentation process is crucial in a biorefinery perspective since it has to give a final stream of constant composition or tailored products suitable for further applications.
