Energy capture from thermolytic solutions and simulated sunlight coupled with hydrogen peroxide production and wastewater remediation

Anodic oxidation of sulfamethoxazole paired to cathodic hydrogen peroxide production

A double chamber electrochemical system is developed consisting of a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a graphite cathode, which not only degrades sulfamethoxazole (SMX) but also simultaneously generates hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The degradation of SMX is carried out by (in)direct oxidation at the BDD anode and H₂O₂ is produced by two electron oxygen (O₂) reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. The effect of different parameters on the kinetics of both mechanisms was investigated. The performance of the system at the optimized conditions (pH 3, 0.05 M Na₂SO₄ as electrolyte, and 10 mA as applied current) showed that after 180 min of electrolysis, SMX was almost fully degraded (95% removal and ∼90% COD reduction) as well as about 535 μM H₂O₂ was accumulated. With the help of LC-MS, five intermediates formed during SMX electrolysis were properly identified and a degradation pathway was proposed. This study advocates methods for improving the effectiveness of energy use in advanced wastewater treatment.

Three-dimensional structured electrode for electrocatalytic organic wastewater purification: Design, mechanism and role

Considering the growing need in decentralized water treatment, the application of electrocatalytic processes (EP) to achieve organic wastewater purification will be dominant in the near future due to high efficiency, small reactor assembly as well as the flexibility of operation and management. The catalytic performance of electrode materials determines the development of this technology. Among them, the unique three-dimensional (3D) structure electrode shows better performance than two-dimensional (2D) electrode in increasing mass transfer, enhancing adsorption and exposing more active sites. Hence, this review starts with the introduction of definition, classification, advantages and disadvantages of 3D electrode materials. Then a critical discussion on the design and construction of 3D electrode materials for organic wastewater purification application is provided. Next, the removal mechanism of organic pollutants on the surface of 3D electrode, the role of 3D structure, the design of reactor with 3D electrode, the conversion and toxicity of degradation products, electrode energy efficiency, stability and cost, are comprehensively reviewed. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D electrode materials are addressed. We deem that this review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of 3D electrodes in environmental water purification.

A new photoelectrochemical cell coupled with the Fenton reaction to remove pollutant and generate electricity under the drive of waste heat

The water and energy crises are becoming increasingly serious with rapid population and economic development. It is urgent to develop new wastewater treatment technologies with high efficiency and low energy consumption. Herein, a solar-salinity nexus cell (called PRC) integrated by a photocatalytic fuel cell and reverse electrodialysis was combined with the Fenton reaction. The PRC-Fenton process can extract electrons from organic wastewater driven by salinity gradient energy for power generation and wastewater remediation in two chambers. The Fenton cathode MOF(2Fe/Co)-GO/GF with good electrocatalytic and photocatalytic activity was developed and optimized in a three-electrode system. GO doping obviously enhanced the catalytic activity and stability of the Fenton cathode. The pollutant (ampicillin, AMP) was simultaneously removed in both anode and cathode chambers of the PRC-Fenton system. AMP removal by the MOF(2Fe/Co)-GO/GF cathode remained above 95% in a wide range of pH values (3.0-7.0). The output current of the PRC-Fenton process was 1.7-2.4 mA. Compared to similar systems, PRC-Fenton is suitable for treating toxic and refractory organic pollutants with green energy in two chambers and generating electricity.

Chlortetracycline degradation performance and mechanism in the self-biased bio-photoelectrochemical system constructed with an oxygen-defect-rich BiVO4/Ni9S8 photoanode

Efficient photoelectrodes are highly desired in bio-photoelectrochemical systems (BPES). Herein, in this paper, the oxygen defect-rich BiVO₄/Ni₉S₈ photoanode was developed and coupled with a biocathode for enhanced chlortertracycline (CTC) degradation and current generation in the self-biased BPES. Characterization results showed that the optimized BiVO₄/Ni₉S₈-7 mg-150 °C NF exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, due to that the rich oxygen vacancies and Ni₉S₈ could significantly improve light absorption, enhance photo-generated carriers separation, and accelerate charges transfer. CTC (20 mg L^-1) removal efficiency from the BPES was about 1.3 times (82.3% vs 64.7%) of that from the unilluminated reactor, and current output (0.68 A m^-3) was about 7.6 times (0.09 A m^-3). The dominant species in genus level was Geobacter, which is capable of reducing nitroaromatics and in favor of reductive dehalogenation of CTC. Besides, Comamonas and Rhodopseudomonas that are capable of degrading antibiotics were also detected. Possible degradation pathways and mechanism of CTC degradation in the BPES were proposed. This research advances the development of photoelectrode materials for light-driven BPESs and enriches antibiotics degradation mechanism.

Melamine/Silicone Hybrid Sponges with Controllable Microstructure and Wettability for Efficient Solar-Driven Interfacial Desalination

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) has received extensive attention as a very promising desalination technique to solve the fresh water shortage crisis. However, evaporation rate decline and salt-fouling during long-term SIE seriously hinder applications of solar evaporators. Here, we report the preparation of melamine/silicone (MS) hybrid sponges with controllable microstructure and wettability for efficient SIE by further combination with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The MS sponges are synthesized by hydrolytic condensation and phase separation of two silanes in the melamine sponge. The microstructure and wettability of the MS sponges are highly controllable by the silanes concentration. The CNTs@MS solar evaporators have a unique three-tier hierarchical macro-/micro-/nanostructure, very low thermal conductivity as well as a superhydrophilic hull and a superhydrophobic nucleus. Consequently, the CNTs@MS solar evaporators show a highly stable evaporation rate of ∼1.75 kg m^-2 h^-1 without any salt precipitation during a long-term cyclic solar desalination of 3.5 wt % NaCl solution under 1 sun illumination. Furthermore, salt precipitation is completely hindered even during SIE of 20 wt % NaCl solution under 1 sun. The CNTs@MS solar evaporators are very promising for practical SIE because of their excellent performance and simple preparation method.

Synergetic adsorption and Fenton-like degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by magnetic spent bleaching earth carbon: Insights into performance and reaction mechanism

In this study, the synergetic adsorption and Fenton-like degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by magnetic spent bleaching earth carbon (Mag-SBE@C) with H₂O₂ were developed and performed, with 91.5% of TCH degradation efficiency and 42.1% of TOC removal efficiency. The effects of the reaction parameters (temperature, initial pH, catalyst dosage, molar ratio of TCH to H₂O₂) on TCH degradation in Mag-SBE@C/H₂O₂ system were studied. Under the optimal conditions (temperature 41.1 °C, initial pH 4.89 and molar ratio of H₂O₂ to TCH 114.435) forecasted by response surface methodology (RSM), high TCH degradation efficiency (99%) was achieved. Also, four cycling tests were performed to confirm the excellent stability and regeneration ability of Mag-SBE@C in presence of H₂O₂. In addition, the characteristics of Mag-SBE@C after reaction are analyzed in details via scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and it was found that Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles on Mag-SBE@C surface acted as co-catalyst and participated in degradation and improved reaction efficiency, while its properties were not greatly changed. The quenching experiments showed that hydroxyl radicals on Mag-SBE@C surface (OH_adsorption) were dominant in Mag-SBE@C/H₂O₂ system. Meanwhile, three possible TCH degradation pathways were given based on the possible intermediates determined by liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). Mag-SBE@C is an excellent heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst, exhibiting greatly potential to antibiotics elimination.

Electrodialysis Applications in Wastewater Treatment for Environmental Protection and Resources Recovery: A Systematic Review on Progress and Perspectives

This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies on electrodialysis (ED) applications in wastewater treatment, outlining the current status and the future prospect. ED is a membrane process of separation under the action of an electric field, where ions are selectively transported across ion-exchange membranes. ED of both conventional or unconventional fashion has been tested to treat several waste or spent aqueous solutions, including effluents from various industrial processes, municipal wastewater or salt water treatment plants, and animal farms. Properties such as selectivity, high separation efficiency, and chemical-free treatment make ED methods adequate for desalination and other treatments with significant environmental benefits. ED technologies can be used in operations of concentration, dilution, desalination, regeneration, and valorisation to reclaim wastewater and recover water and/or other products, e.g., heavy metal ions, salts, acids/bases, nutrients, and organics, or electrical energy. Intense research activity has been directed towards developing enhanced or novel systems, showing that zero or minimal liquid discharge approaches can be techno-economically affordable and competitive. Despite few real plants having been installed, recent developments are opening new routes for the large-scale use of ED techniques in a plethora of treatment processes for wastewater.
