Hot spot of CH4 production and diffusive flux in rivers with high urbanization

Different effects of seasonal impoundment and land use change on microbiome in a tributary sediment of the three gorgers reservoir

Anthropogenic activities significantly impact river ecosystem nutrient fluxes and microbial metabolism. Here, we examined the seasonal and spatial variation of sediments physicochemical parameters and the associated microbiome in the Pengxi river, a representative tributary of Three Gorges Reservoir, in response to seasonal impoundment and land use change by human activities. Results revealed that seasonal impoundment and land use change enhanced total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration in the sediment, but have different effects on sediment microbiome. Sediment microbiota showed higher similarity during the seasonal high-water level (HWL) in consecutive two years. The abundant phyla Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria and Planctomycetes significantly increased as water level increased. Along the changes in bacterial taxa, we also observed changes in predicted carbon fixation functions and nitrogen-related functions, including the significantly higher levels of Calvin cycle, 4HB/3HP cycle, 3HP cycle and assimilatory nitrate reduction, while significantly lower level of denitrification. Though land use change significantly increased TOC, TN and NH4+-N concentration, its effects on spatial variation of bacterial community composition and predicted functions was not significant. The finding indicates that TGR hydrologic changes and land use change have different influences on the carbon and nitrogen fluxes and their associated microbiome in TGR sediments. A focus of future research will be on assessing on carbon and nitrogen flux balance and the associated carbon and nitrogen microbial cycling in TGR sediment.

Urbanization significantly increases greenhouse gas emissions from a subtropical headwater stream in Southeast China

Streams are disproportionately significant contributors to increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) effluxes in river networks. In the context of global urbanization, a growing number of streams are affected by urbanization, which has been suggested to stimulate the water-air GHG emissions from fluvial systems. This study investigated the seasonal and longitudinal profiles of GHG (N2O, CH4, and CO2) concentrations of Jiuxianghe Stream, a headwater stream undergoing urbanization, and estimated its GHG diffusive fluxes and global warming potentials (GWPs) using the boundary layer method. The results showed that N2O, CH4, and CO2 concentrations in Jiuxianghe Stream were 0.45-7.19 μg L-1, 0.31-586.85 μg L-1, and 0.16-11.60 mg L-1, respectively. N2O, CH4, and CO2 concentrations in the stream showed 4.55-, 23.70-, and 7.68-fold increases from headwaters to downstream, respectively, corresponding to the forest-urban transition within the watershed. Multiple linear regression indicated that NO3--N, NH4+-N, and DOC:NO3--N accurately predicted N2O and CO2 concentrations, indicating that N nutrients were the driving factors. The Jiuxianghe Stream was a source of atmospheric GHGs with a daily GWP of 7.31 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1 on average and was significantly positively correlated with the ratio of construction land and forest in the sub-watershed. This study highlights the critical role of urbanization in amplifying GHG emissions from streams, thereby augmenting our understanding of GHG emissions from river networks. With global urbanization on the rise, streams experiencing urbanization are expected to make an unprecedentedly significant contribution to riverine GHG budgets in the future.

Spatio-temporal patterns and drivers of CH4 and CO2 fluxes from rivers and lakes in highly urbanized areas

Gaseous carbon exchange at the water-air interface of rivers and lakes is an essential process for regional and global carbon cycle assessments. Many studies have shown that rivers surrounding urban landscapes can be hotspots for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here we investigated the variability of diffusive GHG (methane [CH4] and carbon dioxide [CO2]) emissions from rivers in different landscapes (i.e., urban, agricultural and mixed) and from lakes in Suzhou, a highly urbanized region in eastern China. GHG emissions in the Suzhou metropolitan water network followed a typical seasonal pattern, with the highest fluxes in summer, and were primarily influenced by temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration. Surprisingly, lakes were emission hotspots, with mean CH4 and CO2 fluxes of 2.80 and 128.89 mg m-2 h-1, respectively, translating to a total CO2-equivalent flux of 0.21 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1. The global warming potential of urban and mixed rivers (0.19 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1) was comparable to that for lakes, but about twice the value for agricultural rivers (0.10 g CO2-eq m-2 d-1). Factors related to the high GHG emissions in lakes included hypoxic water conditions and an adequate nutrient supply. Riverine CH4 emissions were primarily associated with the concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS), ammonia‑nitrogen and chlorophyll a. CO2 emissions in rivers were mainly closely related to TDS, with suitable conditions allowing rapid organic matter decomposition. Compared with other types of rivers, urban rivers had more available organic matter and therefore higher CO2 emissions. Overall, this study emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of the impact of GHG emissions from different water types on global warming in rapidly urbanizing regions. Flexible management measures are urgently needed to mitigate CO2 and CH4 emissions more effectively in the context of the shrinking gap between urban and rural areas with growing socio-economic development.

Denitrification regulates spatiotemporal pattern of N2O emission in an interconnected urban river-lake network

Urban rivers are hotspots of N2O production and emission. Interconnected river-lake networks are constructed to improve the water quality and hydrodynamic conditions of urban rivers in many cities of China. However, the impact of the river-lake connectivity project on N2O production and emission remains unclear. This study investigated dissolved N2O and emission of the river-lake network in Wuhan City, China from March 2021 to December 2021. The results showed that river-lake connection greatly decreased riverine Nitrogen (N) concentration and increased dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration compare to traditional urban rivers. N2O emissions from the urban river interconnected with lakes (LUR: 67.3 ± 92.6 μmol/m2/d) were much lower than those from the traditional urban rivers (UR: 467.3 ± 1075.7 μmol/m2/d) and agricultural rivers (AR: 20.4 ± 15.3μmol/m2/d). Regression tree analysis suggested that the N2O concentrations were extremely high when hypoxia exists (DO < 1.6 mg/L), and TDN was the primary factor regulating N2O concentrations when hypoxia does not occur. Thus, we ascribe the low N2O emission in the LUR and AR to the lower N contents and higher DO concentrations. The microbial process of N2O production and consumption were quantitatively estimated by isotopic models. The mean proportion of denitrification derived N2O (fbD) was 63.5 %, 55.6 %, 42.3 % and 42.7 % in the UR, LUR, lakes and AR, suggested denitrification dominated N2O production in the urban rivers, but nitrification dominated N2O production in the lakes and AR. The positive correlation between logN2O and fbD suggested that denitrification is the key process to regulate the N2O production and emission. The abundance of denitrification genes (nirS and nirK) was much higher than that of nitrification genes (amoA and amoB), also evidenced that denitrification was the main N2O source. Therefore, river-lake interconnected projects changed the nutrients level and hypoxic condition, leading to the inhibition of denitrification and nitrification, and ultimately resulting in a decrease of N2O production and emission. These results advance the knowledge on the microbial processes that regulate N2O emissions in inland waters and illustrate the integrated management of water quality and N2O emission.

Modeling greenhouse gas emissions from riverine systems: A review

Despite the recognized importance of flowing waters in global greenhouse gas (GHG) budgets, riverine GHG models remain oversimplified, consequently restraining the development of effective prediction for riverine GHG emissions feedbacks. Here we elucidate the state of the art of riverine GHG models by investigating 148 models from 122 papers published from 2010 to 2021. Our findings indicate that riverine GHG models have been mostly data-driven models (83%), while mechanistic and hybrid models were uncommonly applied (12% and 5%, respectively). Overall, riverine GHG models were mainly used to explain relationships between GHG emissions and biochemical factors, while the role of hydrological, geomorphic, land use and cover factors remains missing. The development of complex and advanced models has been limited by data scarcity issues; hence, efforts should focus on developing affordable automatic monitoring methods to improve data quality and quantity. For future research, we request for basin-scale studies explaining river and land-surface interactions for which hybrid models are recommended given their flexibility. Such a holistic understanding of GHG dynamics would facilitate scaling-up efforts, thereby reducing uncertainties in global GHG estimates. Lastly, we propose an application framework for model selection based on three main criteria, including model purpose, model scale and the spatiotemporal characteristics of GHG data, by which optimal models can be applied in various study conditions.

Dynamics of CO2, CH4, and N2O in Ria Formosa coastal lagoon (southwestern Iberia) and export to the Gulf of Cadiz

A first characterization of greenhouse gases had been carried out to study their role and impact in a productive transitional coastal system of the southern Portugal - Ria Formosa lagoon. To this purpose, the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and the concentration of dissolved CH4 and N2O have been measured. Two surveys were carried out during 2020, at low tide under typical conditions of Spring (March) and end of Summer (October). The samplings sites were distributed along the costal lagoon covering: i) inner areas with strong human impact (influence of different flows of treated wastewater discharges); and ii) main channels in connection with the main inlets to study the exchanges with the ocean. In general, the highest values of the three greenhouse gases were found at the inner studied areas, especially affected by the disposal of treated effluents from wastewater treatment plans, in October. The mean water - atmosphere fluxes of the CO2, CH4 and N2O are positive, showing that the study area acts as a source of these gases to the atmosphere. On the other hand, it was calculated a rough estimation of the three gases globally exported from Ria Formosa to the ocean, through the main six inlets to evaluate the magnitude of the supply of these gases from Ria Formosa to the adjacent ocean. The mean CO2, CH4 and N2O horizontal water fluxes exported from all the inlets of Ria Formosa to the Gulf of Cadiz for both seasons, during low water, are 8.7 ± 3.9 mmol m-2 s-1, 8.0 ± 3.5 μmol m-2 s-1 and 3.2 ± 1.5 μmol m-2 s-1, which corresponds to a mass transport through the inlets section of 0.7 ± 0.7 kg s-1, 0.2 ± 0.2 g s-1 and 0.2 ± 0.3 g s-1 respectively. From these estimates, as expected, the higher mass transport was found at the larger and deeper inlets (Faro-Olhão and Armona).

Intense methane diffusive emissions in eutrophic urban lakes, Central China

Urban lakes are hotspots of methane (CH4) emissions. Yet, actual field measurements of CH4 in these lakes are rather limited and our understanding of CH4 response to urban lake eutrophication is still incomplete. In this study, we measured dissolved CH4 concentrations and quantified CH4 diffusion from four urban lakes in subtropical China during wet and dry seasons. We found that these lakes were constantly CH4-saturated, contributing the greenhouse gas (GHG) to the atmosphere. Nutrient enrichment significantly increased CH4 concentrations and diffusive fluxes. Average CH4 flux rate in the highly-eutrophic lake zones (4.18 ± 7.68 mmol m-2 d-1) was significantly higher than those in the mesotrophic (0.19 ± 0.18 mmol m-2 d-1) and lightly/moderately-eutrophic zones (0.72 ± 2.22 mmol m-2 d-1). Seasonally, CH4 concentrations and fluxes were significantly higher in the wet season than in the dry season in the mesotrophic and the lightly/moderately-eutrophic lake zones, but an inverse pattern existed in the highly-eutrophic lake zones. CH4 concentrations and fluxes increased with elevated levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The accumulation of nutrients provided autochthonous substrate for methanogenesis, indicated by a negative correlation between CH4 and the C:N ratio. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) was the best predictor for spatial fluctuation of CH4 concentrations and diffusive fluxes in the mesotrophic and the lightly/moderately-eutrophic lake zones, while total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) levels showed the highest predictability in the highly-eutrophic lake zones. Based on the findings, we conclude that nutrient enrichment in urban lakes can largely increase CH4 diffusion, and that urban sewage inflow is a key concern for eutrophication boosting CH4 production and diffusive emission. Furthermore, our study reveals that small urban lakes may be an important missing source of GHG emissions in the global C accounting, and that the ratio of littoral-to-pelagic zones can be important for predicting lake-scale estimation of CH4 emission.

Nitrogen addition effect overrides warming effect on dissolved CO2 and phytoplankton structure in shallow lakes

Shallow lakes are numerous in all climate zones, but our knowledge about their dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) response to future climate change and nutrient enrichment is rather limited. Here we performed a mesocosm experiment with four treatments to investigate how warming and nitrogen addition will impact the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and phytoplankton community individually and combined. We found that warming alone had no significant effect on pCO2, while nitrogen addition increased pCO2 significantly. The combined effects of nitrogen addition and warming on pCO2 level were prevalent, indicating that eutrophic shallow lakes would be double-jeopardized in the future climate. Warming and nitrogen addition together also showed to have changed the phytoplankton community structure, suggesting a potential shifting of biological system in shallow lakes under changing climate. These findings highlight the importance of reducing nitrogen pollution to shallow lake systems for sustainable development goal.

Watershed urbanization dominated the spatiotemporal pattern of riverine methane emissions: Evidence from montanic streams that drain different landscapes in Southwest China

Methane (CH₄) emissions from streams are an important component of the global carbon budget of freshwater ecosystems, but these emissions are highly variable and uncertain at the temporal and spatial scales associated with watershed urbanization. In this study, we conducted investigations of dissolved CH₄ concentrations and fluxes and related environmental parameters at high spatiotemporal resolution in three montanic streams that drain different landscapes in Southwest China. We found that the average CH₄ concentrations and fluxes in the highly urbanized stream (2049 ± 2164 nmol L^-1 and 11.95 ± 11.75 mmol·m^-2·d^-1) were much higher than those in the suburban stream (1021 ± 1183 nmol L^-1 and 3.29 ± 3.66 mmol·m^-2·d^-1) and were approximately 12.3 and 27.8 times those in the rural stream, respectively. It provides powerful evidence that watershed urbanization strongly enhances riverine CH₄ emission potential. Temporal patterns of CH₄ concentrations and fluxes and their controls were not consistent among the three streams. Seasonal CH₄ concentrations in the urbanized streams had negative exponential relationships with monthly precipitation and demonstrated greater sensitivity to rainfall dilution than to the temperature priming effect. Additionally, the CH₄ concentrations in the urban and semiurban streams showed strong, but opposite, longitudinal patterns, which were closely related to urban distribution patterns and the HAILS (human activity intensity of the land surface) within the watersheds. High carbon and nitrogen loads from sewage discharge in urban areas and the spatial arrangement of the sewage drainage contributed to the different spatial patterns of the CH₄ emissions in different urbanized streams. Moreover, CH₄ concentrations in the rural stream were mainly controlled by pH and inorganic nitrogen (NH₄⁺ and NO₃^-), while urban and semiurban streams were dominated by total organic carbon and nitrogen. We highlighted that rapid urban expansion in montanic small catchments will substantially enhance riverine CH₄ concentrations and fluxes and dominate their spatiotemporal pattern and regulatory mechanisms. Future work should consider the spatiotemporal patterns of such urban-disturbed riverine CH₄ emissions and focus on the relationship between urban activities with aquatic carbon emissions.

Land use and hydrological factors control concentrations and diffusive fluxes of riverine dissolved carbon dioxide and methane in low-order streams

We analyzed the impacts of land use/land cover types on carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) concentration and diffusion in 1^st to 4^th Strahler order tributaries of the Longchuan River to the upper Yangtze River in China by using headspace equilibration method and CO₂SYS program. Field sampling and measurements were conducted during the dry and wet seasons from 2017 to 2019. The average of calculated CO₂ partial pressure (pCO₂, mean ± SD: 2389 ± 3220 μatm) by CO₂SYS program was 1.9-fold higher than the value (mean ± SD: 1230 ± 1440 μatm) 10 years ago in the Longchuan River basin, where the urban land area increased by a factor of 7 times. Further analysis showed that corrected pCO₂ by headspace method and dissolved CH₄ (dCH₄) decrease as the stream order and flow velocity increase. The pCO₂ and dCH₄ in the wet season was lower than that in the dry season. The explanatory ability of land use types on the variation of corrected pCO₂ and dCH₄ was stronger at the reach scale than at the riparian and catchment scales in two seasons. Urban land at reach scale further showed much higher explanation on corrected pCO₂ and dCH₄ than cropland, grassland and forest land in the wet season. The Longchuan River emits approximately 112.5 kt CO₂-C and 1.0 kt CH₄-C per year, being 1.7-fold of the total lateral export of dissolved inorganic and dissolved organic carbon (68.3 kt C y^-1). The findings highlight the scale effects of land use on the observed seasonality in dissolved carbon gases in low-order streams.

CH4 and CO2 emissions in water networks of rice cultivation regions

Rice cultivation regions have a high density of open water networks to meet the requirements of rice growth and production. These open water networks have a significant risk of carbon (C) emissions due to agricultural production, but the C emissions from these waters are not clearly recorded in previous studies. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the pattern and internal mechanism of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from multiple types of waters (i.e., river, fish pond, reservoir, and ditch) in a typical rice cultivation region in southwestern China. The annual CH₄ and CO₂ fluxes were higher in the downstream river (2.79-94.89 and 39.39-1699.98 mg m^-2 h^-1) and ditch (8.80-74.99 and 123.43-542.65 mg m^-2 h^-1, respectively) and lower in the reservoir (-0.67 to 3.45 and -239.15 to 141.50 mg m^-2 h^-1) (P < 0.05). The monthly trends of CH₄ and CO₂ fluxes from the middle river and ditch were driven by interactive reactions of rice cultivation practices and precipitation. In contrast, the emission patterns of CH₄ and CO₂ from the lower river, upper river, and fish pond were mainly driven by domestic sewage discharge, precipitation, and aquaculture practices, respectively. This study suggested that river and ditch were more sensitive to C emissions than other waters, and the rice production period was the critical period for controlling C emission. Although rice paddy soils yield more cumulative emissions of CH₄, water networks in rice cultivation regions were possible hotspots for C emissions due to the higher emission intensities, which were largely overlooked before. Thus, it is necessary to refine and promote practices to better mitigate C emissions from waters in rice cultivation regions in the future.

Land use drivers of riverine methane dynamics in a tropical river basin, India

Rivers are globally significant natural sources of atmospheric methane (CH₄). However, the effect of land use changes on riverine CH₄ dynamics, particularly in tropical zones, remain ambiguous, yet important to predict and anticipate the present and future contribution of rivers to the global CH₄ budget. The present study examines the magnitude and drivers of riverine CH₄ concentration and emission in the tropical Krishna River (KR) basin, India. The large spatial variability of CH₄ concentration (0.03 to 185.34 μmol L ^-1) and emissions (0.04 mmol m^-2 d^-1 to 1666.24 mmol m^-2 d^-1) in the KR basin was linked to the site-specific features of the catchments through which rivers are draining. Several fold higher CH₄ concentration and emission was observed for the urban river sites (64.63 ± 53.17 µmol L^-1 and 294.15 ± 371.52 mmol m² d^-1, respectively) than the agricultural (1.05 ± 2.22 µmol L^-1 and 3.45 ± 9.72 mmol m² d^-1, respectively) and forested (0.49 ± 0.23 µmol L^-1 and 1.26 ± 0.73 mmol m² d^-1, respectively) sites. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, and Chlorophyll-a were significant hydrochemical variables strongly coupled with the dissolved CH₄ concentrations. On the other hand, percentage of built-up area emerged as the most important landscape-level driver indicating that urbanization has an overriding effect on riverine CH₄ concentration in the agriculture dominated KR basin. Our study supports the growing notion that tropical urban rivers are hotspot of CH₄ emission. Furthermore, we show that the pattern of increasing in riverine CH₄ concentration with built-up area (%) is a general feature of Asian river basins. As the urban land cover and population following an exponential increase, Asian rivers might contribute substantially to the regional and global CH₄ budget.

Source and quality of dissolved organic matter in streams are reflective to land use/land cover, climate seasonality and pCO2

Sources and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in streams may be largely controlled by the landscape and season. In this study, we attempted to answer three critical questions: 1) Do land use/land cover (LULC) types affect DOM characteristics? 2) Is there a seasonal fluctuation in DOM components? 3) How do DOM quality and LULC types influence aqueous carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO₂). To achieve this, we investigated the fluorescence characteristics of DOM and its implication for pCO₂ in three streams draining land with different urban intensities under distinctive dry and wet seasons. Four fluorescence components were identified, including two terrestrial humic-like components, one protein-like component and one microbial humic-like component. We found a significant positive relationship of the maximum fluorescence intensity (F_max) of the four components and fluorescence index (FI₃₇₀) with urbanization intensity in both the dry and wet seasons. The mean F_max, biological index (BIX) and FI₃₇₀ all exhibited an increasing trend from upstream to downstream in the stream with highest proportions of urban and cropland. The fluorescence characteristics were negatively related to proportion of forested land in the both seasons. The terrestrial humic-like DOM was dominating in the studied streams. Moreover, the seasonality altered the DOM composition, with protein-like component emerging only in stream waters during the dry season, while microbial humic-like component exclusively occurred during the wet season. pCO₂ values were positively related to terrestrial humic-like and biological protein-like components, and urban land. The dry season had much higher pCO₂ than the wet season. Results from the Partial Least Squares Path (PLS-PM) models further indicated that LULC types were important in mediating fluorescence DOM whilst pCO₂ was more sensitive to the direct effect from FDOM dynamics. We conclude that DOM source and quality in streams are reflective to LULC and climate seasonality, and are good indicators of pCO₂ via source tracer and quality of fluorescence components.

Spatiotemporal variations of dissolved CH4 concentrations and fluxes from typical freshwater types in an agricultural irrigation watershed in Eastern China

Inland freshwater ecosystems are of increasing concerns in global methane (CH₄) budget in the atmosphere. Agricultural irrigation watersheds are a potential CH₄ emission hotspot owing to the anthropogenic carbon and nutrients loading. However, large-scale spatial variations of CH₄ concentrations and fluxes in agricultural catchments remain poorly understood, constraining an accurate regional estimate of CH₄ budgets. Here, we examined the spatiotemporal variations of dissolved CH₄ concentrations and fluxes from typical freshwater types (ditch, reservoir and river) within an agricultural irrigation watershed from Hongze catchment, which is subjected to intensive agricultural and rural activities in Eastern China. The dissolved CH₄ concentrations and fluxes showed similar temporal variations among the three freshwater types, with the highest rates in summer and the lowest rates in winter. The total CH₄ emission from this agricultural irrigation watershed was estimated to be 0.002 Gg CH₄ yr^-1, with annual mean CH₄ concentration and flux of 0.12 μmol L^-1 and 0.58 mg m^-2 d^-1, respectively. Diffusive CH₄ fluxes varied in samples taken from different freshwater types, the annual mean CH₄ fluxes for ditch, reservoir and river were 0.31 ± 0.06, 0.71 ± 0.13 and 0.72 ± 0.25 mg m^-2 d^-1, respectively. Among three freshwater types, the CH₄ fluxes were the lowest in ditch, which was associated with the lowest responses of CH₄ fluxes to water dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N) and sediment dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in ditch. In addition, water velocity and wind speed were significantly lower in ditch than in reservoir and river, suggesting that they also played important roles in explaining the spatial variability of dissolved CH₄ concentrations and fluxes. These results highlighted a need for more field measurements with wider spatial coverage and finer frequency, which would further improve the reliability of flux estimates for assessing the contribution of agricultural watersheds to the regional and global CH₄ budgets.

Methane and nitrous oxide concentrations and fluxes from heavily polluted urban streams: Comprehensive influence of pollution and restoration

Streams draining urban areas are usually regarded as hotspots of methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions. However, little is known about the coupling effects of watershed pollution and restoration on CH₄ and N₂O emission dynamics in heavily polluted urban streams. This study investigated the CH₄ and N₂O concentrations and fluxes in six streams that used to be heavily polluted but have undergone different watershed restorations in Southwest China, to explore the comprehensive influences of pollution and restoration. CH₄ and N₂O concentrations in the six urban streams ranged from 0.12 to 21.32 μmol L^-1 and from 0.03 to 2.27 μmol L^-1, respectively. The calculated diffusive fluxes of CH₄ and N₂O were averaged of 7.65 ± 9.20 mmol m^-2 d^-1 and 0.73 ± 0.83 mmol m^-2 d^-1, much higher than those in most previous reports. The heavily polluted streams with non-restoration had 7.2 and 7.8 times CH₄ and N₂O concentrations higher than those in the fully restored streams, respectively. Particularly, CH₄ and N₂O fluxes in the fully restored streams were 90% less likely than those found in the unrestored ones. This result highlighted that heavily polluted urban streams with high pollution loadings were indeed hotspots of CH₄ and N₂O emissions throughout the year, while comprehensive restoration can effectively weaken their emission intensity. Sewage interception and nutrient removal, especially N loadings reduction, were effective measures for regulating the dynamics of CH₄ and N₂O emissions from the heavily polluted streams. Based on global and regional integration, it further elucidated that increasing environment investments could significantly improve water quality and mitigate CH₄ and N₂O emissions in polluted urban streams. Overall, our study emphasized that although urbanization could inevitably strengthen riverine CH₄ and N₂O emissions, effective eco-restoration can mitigate the crisis of riverine greenhouse gas emissions.

Dynamics and internal links of dissolved carbon in a karst river system: Implications for composition, origin and fate

Dissolved carbon (DC) deciphers biotic and abiotic processes in aquatic ecosystems, representing a critical component of global carbon cycling. However, underlying drivers of riverine DC dynamics and internal links have yet to be studied. Here, we investigated fluvial physicochemical characteristics, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) species, carbon dioxide (CO₂) exchange, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compositions and properties in a karst river system Qijiang, Southwest China. Carbonate dissolution combined with photosynthetic uptake could explain dynamics of DIC species. Carbon sequestration caused low-magnitude of partial pressure of aqueous CO₂ (pCO₂, 620.3 ± 1028.7 μatm) and water-air CO₂ flux (F, 154.3 ± 772.6 mmol/m²/d), yielding an annual CO₂ emission of 0.079 Tg CO₂/y. Relatively high biological index (BIX, 0.77-0.96 on average) but low humification index (HIX, 0.67-0.78 on average) indicated notable autochthonous processes. Humic-like component was the predominant DOC, accounting for 39.0%-75.2% with a mean of 57.2% ± 6.17%. Meanwhile, tryptophan-like component (5.84% ± 2.31%) was also identified as collective DOC by parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) across samples. Biological metabolism established internal linkages between DIC and DOC in the karst river system. Our findings highlighted biological process as a determinant for DC cycling in karst aquatic ecosystems.

Suppressing Methane Production to Boost High-Purity Hydrogen Production in Microbial Electrolysis Cells

Hydrogen gas (H₂) is an attractive fuel carrier due to its high specific enthalpy; moreover, it is a clean source of energy because in the combustion reaction with oxygen (O₂) it produces water as the only byproduct. The microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a promising technology for producing H₂ from simple or complex organics present in wastewater and solid wastes. Methanogens and non-archaeal methane (CH₄)-producing microorganisms (NAMPMs) often grow in the MECs and lead to rapid conversion of produced H₂ to CH₄. Moreover, non-archaeal methane production (NAMP) catalyzed by nitrogenase of photosynthetic bacteria was always overlooked. Thus, suppression of CH₄ production is required to enhance H₂ yield and production rate. This review comprehensively addresses the principles and current state-of-the-art technologies for suppressing methanogenesis and NAMP in MECs. Noteworthy, specific strategies aimed at the inhibition of methanogenic enzymes and nitrogenase could be a more direct approach than physical and chemical strategies for repressing the growth of methanogenic archaea. In-depth studies on the multiomics of CH₄ metabolism can possibly provide insights into sustainable and efficient approaches for suppressing metabolic pathways of methanogenesis and NAMP. The main objective of this review is to highlight key concepts, directions, and challenges related to boosting H₂ generation by suppressing CH₄ production in MECs. Finally, perspectives are briefly outlined to guide and advance the future direction of MECs for production of high-purity H₂ based on genetic and metabolic engineering and on the interspecific interactions.

Riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) as affected by urbanization gradient

Rapid urbanization has considerably altered carbon biogeochemical cycle and river hydrology. However, the influences of urban land use and urban-induced nutrient increase on dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics are poorly understood. Here we hypothesize that the alterations significantly change sources and levels of DOM in river systems that drain the urban areas. To test the hypothesis, we investigated DOM in headwater rivers with varied urban intensities in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA), China, through field sampling conducted in the dry and wet seasons. We found positive relationships of urban land (%Urban) with DOC concentration and chromophoric DOM (CDOM) absorption coefficients a₂₅₄, a₂₈₀ and a₃₅₀, as well as fluorescence index (FI₃₇₀), indicating the significantly increased levels of DOM and autochthonous sources along an urbanization gradient. A stepwise regression analysis demonstrated that occurrences of DOC and CDOM can be predicted by %Urban, while increasing autochthonous source is predictable by the increase in riverine nitrogen. Moreover, a₂₅₄, a₂₈₀ and FI₃₇₀ values showed distinct seasonal variations, with significantly higher CDOM concentration in the wet season and with much higher autochthonous signal in the dry season with high nitrogen loading. Based on the findings, we conclude that urbanization influences occurrences and sources of DOM, with increasing urbanization making an important and direct contribution to DOM, and an indirect effect of urban induced nutrient enrichment, i.e., enhanced nutrient loadings increase autochthonous DOM production in rivers.

Anthropogenic land use substantially increases riverine CO2 emissions

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from inland waters to the atmosphere are a pivotal component of the global carbon budget. Anthropogenic land use can influence riverine CO₂ emissions, but empirical data exploring cause-effect relationships remain limited. Here, we investigated CO₂ partial pressures (pCO₂) and degassing in a monsoonal river (Yue River) within the Han River draining to the Yangtze in China. Almost 90% of river samples were supersaturated in CO₂ with a mean ± standard deviation of 1474 ± 1614 µatm, leading to emissions of 557 - 971 mmol/m²/day from river water to the atmosphere. Annual CO₂ emissions were 1.6 - 2.8 times greater than the longitudinal exports of riverine dissolved inorganic and organic carbon. pCO₂ was positively correlated to anthropogenic land use (urban and farmland), and negatively correlated to forest cover. pCO₂ also had significant and positive relationships with total dissolved nitrogen and total dissolved phosphorus. Stepwise multiple regression models were developed to predict pCO₂. Farmland and urban land released nutrients and organic matter to the river system, driving riverine pCO₂ enrichment due to enhanced respiration in these heterotrophic rivers. Overall, we show the crucial role of land use driving riverine pCO₂, which should be considered in future large-scale estimates of CO₂ emissions from streams. Land use change can thus modify the carbon balance of urban-river systems by enhancing river emissions, and reforestation helps carbon neutral in rivers.
