Enhanced Cr(VI) reduction in biocathode microbial electrolysis cell using Fenton-derived ferric sludge

Enhanced bioelectroremediation of heavy metal contaminated groundwater through advancing a self-standing cathode

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination in groundwater poses a substantial global challenge due to its high toxicity and extensive industrial applications. While the bioelectroremediation of Cr(VI) has attracted huge attention for its eco-friendly attributes, its practical application remains constrained by the hydrogeochemical conditions of groundwater (mainly pH), low electron transfer efficiency, limitations in electrocatalyst synthesis and electrode fabrication. In this study, we developed and investigated the use of N, S co-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) integrated on a graphite felt (GF) as a self-standing cathode (NS/CNF-GF) for the comprehensive reduction of Cr(VI) from real contaminated groundwater. The binder free cathode, prepared through electro-polymerization, was employed in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) for the treatment of Cr (VI)-laden real groundwater (40 mg/L) with a pH of 7.4. The electrochemical characterization of the prepared cathode revealed a distinct electroactive surface area, more wettability, facilitating enhanced adsorption and rapid electron transfer, resulting in a commendable Cr(VI) reduction rate of 0.83 mg/L/h. The MFC equipped with NS/CNF-GF demonstrated the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct) and generated the highest power density (155 ± 0.3 mW/m2) compared to control systems. The favorable electrokinetics for modified cathode led to swift substrate consumption in the anode, releasing more electrons and protons, thereby accelerating Cr(VI) reduction to achieve the highest cathodic coulombic efficiency (C.Eca)of80 ± 1.3 %. A similar temporal trend observed between Cr(VI) removal efficiency, COD removal efficiency, and C.Eca, underscores the effective performance of the modified electrode. The reusability of the binder free cathode, exemption from catholyte preparation and the absence of pH regulation requirements highlighted the potential scalability and applicability of our findings on a larger scale.

Dual role of pyrogenic carbon in mediating electron transfer from clay minerals to chromium in aqueous and solid media

Clay minerals (CMs) and pyrogenic carbons (PCs) often co-exist in the environment and participate in the redox cycling of pollutants. This study unveiled the dual role of PCs in CM-dominated chromium transformation in both aqueous and agar solidification media. The findings showed that CMs and PCs adsorbed minimal Cr(VI), while reduced CMs and PCs displayed a substantial difference by directly reducing Cr(VI) to solid/dissolved Cr(III) through reactive structural Fe(II) and functional groups, respectively. Moreover, dissolved PCs were found to mediate electron transfer from reduced CMs to Cr(VI) in aqueous and solid media. Interestingly, the effect of solid PCs on Cr(VI) reduction by reduced CMs was concentration-dependent. At lower concentrations, solid PCs dispersed reduced CMs, acting as electron mediators and facilitating both direct and indirect Cr(VI) reduction, resulting in solid Cr(III) rather than dissolved Cr(III). Conversely, at higher concentrations, solid PCs served as redox buffers, storing electrons transferred from reduced CMs to Cr(VI). In either case, the transformed chromium was primarily immobilized on the surface of CMs rather than PCs. These findings offer valuable insights into pollutant transformations associated with CMs and PCs, deepening our understanding of their geochemical processes.

Recent advances in enhanced technology of Cr(VI) bioreduction in aqueous condition: A review

Due to the extensive application of chromate in industry, chromium-contaminated water has emerged as a significant hidden danger that threatens human health and the safety of the ecological environment. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) through microbial processes has become one of the most notable methods for remediating water polluted by chromium due to its economic efficiency and environmentally friendly nature. However, several issues persist in its practical application, such as low reduction rates, the need for additional nutrients, and challenges in solid-liquid separation. Therefore, there is a growing focus on seeking enhanced methods for Cr(VI) microbial reduction, which has become a key area of research. This review represents the initial effort to systematically classify and summarize the means of enhancing Cr(VI) microbial reduction. It categorizes the enhancement methods into two main approaches: microbial-based and multi-method combined enhancement, offering detailed explanations for their mechanisms. This research provides both inspiration and theoretical support for the practical implementation of the Cr(VI) microbial reduction method.

Cellulose nanofibril/titanate nanofiber modified with CdS quantum dots hydrogel with 3D porous structure: A stable photocatalytic adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal

A novel cellulose nanofibril/titanate nanofiber modified with CdS quantum dots hydrogel (CTH) was synthesized as an effective, stable, and recyclable photocatalytic adsorbent using cellulose nanofibril (CN), titanate nanofiber (TN), and CdS quantum dots. Within the CTH structure, CN formed an essential framework, creating a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure that enhanced the specific surface area and provided abundant adsorption sites for Cr(VI). Simultaneously, TN modified with CdS quantum dots (TN-CdS) served as a nanoscale Z-type photocatalyst, facilitating the efficient separation of photoinduced electrons and holes, further increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. The morphological, chemical, and optical properties of CTH were thoroughly characterized. The CTH demonstrated the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 373.3 ± 14.2 mg/g, which was 3.4 times higher than that of CN hydrogel. Furthermore, the photocatalytic reduction rate constant of the CTH was 0.0586 ± 0.0038 min-1, which was 6.4 times higher than that of TN-CdS. Notably, CTH displayed outstanding stability, maintaining 84.9 % of its initial removal efficiency even after undergoing five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The remarkable performance of CTH in Cr(VI) removal was attributed to its 3D porous structure, comprising CN and TN-CdS. These findings provide novel insights into developing a stable photocatalytic adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal.

Sustainable disposal of Fenton sludge and enhanced organics degradation based on dissimilatory iron reduction in the hydrolytic acidification process

Fenton sludge generated in the flocculation stage of the Fenton oxidation process contains significant amounts of ferric iron and organic pollutants, which require proper treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that adding Fenton sludge to an anaerobic digester can decompose some of the organic pollutants in the Fenton sludge to lower its environmental risk, but iron gradually accumulates in the reactor, which weakens the sustainability of the method. In this study, Fenton sludge was introduced into a hydrolytic acidification reactor with a weak acid environment to relieve the iron accumulation as well as improve the degradation of organic matter. The results showed that the added Fenton sludge acted as an extracellular electron acceptor to induce dissimilatory iron reduction, which increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and acidification efficiency by 16.1% and 19.8%, respectively, compared to the group without Fenton sludge. Along with the operation, more than 90% of the Fe(III) in Fenton sludge was reduced to Fe(II), and part of them was released to the effluent. Moreover, the Fe(II) in the effluent could be used as flocculants and Fenton reagents to further decrease the effluent COD by 29.8% and 44.5%, respectively. It provided a sustainable strategy to reuse Fenton sludge to enhance organic degradation based on the iron cycle.

Physiological and transcriptional studies reveal Cr(VI) reduction mechanisms in the exoelectrogen Cellulomonas fimi Clb-11

A facultative exoelectrogen, Cellulomonas fimi strain Clb-11, was isolated from polluted river water. This strain could generate electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the carbon source, and the maximum output power density was 12.17 ± 2.74 mW·m^-2. In addition, Clb-11 could secrete extracellular chromate reductase or extracellular electron mediator to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). When the Cr(VI) concentration was less than 0.5 mM in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium, Cr(VI) could be completely reduced by Clb-11. However, the Clb-11 cells swelled significantly in the presence of Cr(VI). We employed transcriptome sequencing analysis to identify genes involved in different Cr(VI) stress responses in Clb-11. The results indicate that 99 genes were continuously upregulated while 78 genes were continuously downregulated as the Cr(VI) concentration increased in the growth medium. These genes were mostly associated with DNA replication and repair, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, ABC transporters, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and carbon metabolism. The swelling of Clb-11 cells might have been related to the upregulation of the genes atoB, INO1, dhaM, dhal, dhak, and bccA, which encode acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase, myo-inositol-1-phosphate synthase, phosphoenolpyruvate-glycerone phosphotransferase, and acetyl-CoA/propionyl-CoA carboxylase, respectively. Interestingly, the genes cydA and cydB related to electron transport were continuously downregulated as the Cr(VI) concentration increased. Our results provide clues to the molecular mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by microorganisms in MFCs systems.

Fe(III) enhances Cr(VI) bioreduction in a MFC-granular sludge coupling system: Experimental evidence and metagenomics analysis

The influence of Fe(III) on the bioreduction efficiency of Cr(VI) in a microbial fuel cell (MFC)-granular sludge coupling system using dissolved methane as an electron donor and carbon source was explored, and the mechanism of Fe(III) mediating enhancement in the bioreduction process of Cr(VI) in the coupling system was also investigated. Results showed that the presence of Fe(III) enhanced the ability of the coupling system to reduce Cr(VI). The average removal efficiencies of Cr(VI) in the anaerobic zone in response to 0, 5, and 20 mg/L of Fe(III) were 16.53±2.12%, 24.17±2.10%, and 46.33±4.41%, respectively. Fe(III) improved the reducing ability and output power of the system. In addition, Fe(III) enhanced the electron transport systems activity of the sludge, the polysaccharide and protein content in the anaerobic sludge. Meanwhile, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) spectra demonstrated that Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), while Fe2p participated in reducing Cr(VI) in the form of Fe(III) and Fe(II). Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phylum in the Fe(III)-enhanced MFC-granular sludge coupling system, accounting for 49.7%-81.83% of the microbial community. The relative abundance of Syntrophobacter and Geobacter increased after adding Fe(III), indicating that Fe(III) contributed to the microbial mediated anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and bioreduction of Cr(VI). The genes mcr, hdr, and mtr were highly expressed in the coupling system after the Fe(III) concentration increased. Meanwhile, the relative abundances of coo and aacs genes were up-regulated by 0.014% and 0.075%, respectively. Overall, these findings deepen understanding of the mechanism of the Cr(VI) bioreduction in the MFC-granular sludge coupling system driven by methane under the influence of Fe(III).

The interaction of ZnO nanoparticles, Cr(VI), and microorganisms triggers a novel ROS scavenging strategy to inhibit microbial Cr(VI) reduction

Cr(VI) contaminated water usually contains other contaminants like engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). During the process of microbial treatment, the inevitable interaction of Cr(VI), ENMs, and microorganisms probably determines the efficiency of Cr(VI) biotransformation, however, the corresponding information remains elusive. This study investigated the interaction of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), Cr(VI), and Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB (hereafter BB), which changed the process of microbial Cr(VI) reduction. ZnO NPs inhibited Cr(VI) reduction, but had no effect on bacterial viability. In particular, Cr(VI) induced BB to produce organic acids and to drive Zn²⁺ dissolution from ZnO NPs inside and outside of cells. The dissolved Zn²⁺ not only promoted Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(V)/Cr(IV) by strengthening sugar metabolism and inducing increase in NAD(P)H production, but also hindered Cr(V)/Cr(IV) transformation to Cr(III) through down-regulating Cr(VI) reductase genes. A novel bacterial driven ROS scavenging mechanism leading to the inhibition of Cr(VI) reduction was elucidated. Specifically, the accumulated Cr(VI) and Cr(V)/Cr(IV) formed a redox dynamic equilibrium, which triggered the disproportionation of superoxide radicals mimicking superoxide dismutase through the flip-flop of Cr(VI) and Cr(V)/Cr(IV) in bacterial cells. This study provided a realistic insight into design the applicability of biological remediation technology for Cr(VI) contaminant and evaluating environmental risks of ENMs.

Continuously feeding fenton sludge into anaerobic digesters: Iron species change and operating stability

Fenton sludge generated from the Fenton process contains a large number of ferric species and organic pollutants, which need to be properly treated before discharge. In this study, Fenton sludge as an Fe(III) source for dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) was continuously added with increasing dosage into an anaerobic digester to enhance the treatment. Results showed continuously feeding Fenton sludge to the anaerobic digester did not deteriorate the performance and increased methane production and COD removal rate by 2.2 folds and 14.0%, respectively. The Fe content of sludge in the digester increased from 40.25 mg/g (dry weight) to 131.53 mg/g after continuously feeding for 77days, and then declined to 109.17 mg/g when the feeding was stopped. Mass balance analysis showed that 20.5 to 48.4% of Fe in the Fenton sludge was released to the effluent. After experiment, the ratio of reducible Fe species to the total Fe was 75.1%, which maintained the high activity in DIR. Microbial community analysis showed that iron-reducing bacteria were enriched with the addition of Fenton sludge and the sludge in the digester had a higher conductivity and capacitance to strengthen the electron transfer of DIR. All results suggested that feeding Fenton sludge into anaerobic digesters was a feasible method to dispose of Fenton sludge as well as to enhance the performance of anaerobic digestion.
