Investigation of intra - event variations of total, dissolved and truly dissolved metal concentrations in highway runoff and a gross pollutant trap - bioretention stormwater treatment train

Photoaged tire wear particles hinder the transport of Pb(II) in urban soils under acid rain: Experimental and numerical investigations

Rapid urbanization brought lots of serious environmental contamination, including the accumulation of heavy metals, acid rain, and the emission of tire wear particles (TWPs), with detrimental effects for terrestrial ecosystems. Nevertheless, how naturally aged TWPs affect the mobilization of heavy metals in soils under acid rain is still unclear. Here, we investigate the adsorption and transport mechanisms of Pb(II) co-existing with acid rainwater in soil-TWP mixtures via batch experiments, column experiments and modeling. Results showed that photoaged TWP significantly prolonged the Pb(II) adsorption equilibrium time (1 to 16 h) and enhanced the Pb(II) adsorption capacity of soils. Soil column profiles confirmed that TWP effectively boosted the initial accumulation of lead in the topsoil and thus impeded the downward transport of lead. The retardation factor (R) estimated by the linear two-site sorption model (TSM) fitting the Pb(II) breakthrough curves gradually increased from 1.098 to 16.38 in soils with TWP (0-10 %). Comparative results of linear or nonlinear TSM suggested nonlinear sorption replacing linear sorption as the main Pb(II) sorption mechanism under 1 % and 10 % TWP. This research provides significant insights into the implications of TWP on the Pb(II) retention behaviors and highlights the severer potential remobilization risks of Pb(II) in urban soils under different acid rain environments.

Intra-event variations of organic micropollutants in highway runoff and a presedimentation-biofilter treatment facility

The study assessed the quality of highway runoff and a stormwater treatment system, focusing on intra-event variations (IEVs: variations within a runoff/effluent event) of the concentration of organic micropollutants (OMPs) including bisphenol-A, alkylphenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). IEVs of OMPs varied considerably with no particular recurring pattern in highway runoff and presedimentation effluent, displaying sporadic strong first flushes. IEVs are significantly associated with rainfall intensity variations, especially for particle-bound substances such as PAHs and PHCs. However, phenolic substances showed distinct IEV patterns compared to total suspended solids, PAHs, and PHCs, likely due to their higher solubility and mobility. Downstream sand filter (SF) and vegetated biofilter (BFC) mitigated IEVs, leading to more uniform discharge during outflow events. Although BFC's IEVs were indiscernible due to low effluent concentrations, SF's IEVs often peaked at the beginning of events (within the first 100 of ⁓600 m3), exceeding the lowest predicted non-effect concentrations for five PAHs, bisphenol-A, and octylphenol. This study highlights the advantage of IEV analysis over conventional event mean concentration analysis for identifying critical effluent stages, crucial for developing control strategies to protect sensitive water recipients or for reuse applications.

The role of water matrix on antibiotic resistance genes transmission in substrate layer from stormwater bioretention cells

Recently, extensive attention has been paid to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transmission. However, little available literature could be found about ARGs transmission in stormwater bioretention cells, especially the role of water matrix on ARGs transmission. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate target ARGs (blaTEM, tetR and aphA) transmission behaviors in substrate layer from stormwater bioretention cells under different water matrices, including nutrient elements (e.g., carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus), water environmental conditions (dissolved oxygen (DO), pH and salinity, etc.) and pollution factors (like heavy metals, antibiotics and disinfectants), showing that ARGs conjugation frequency increased sharply with the enhancement of water matrices (expect DO and pH), while there were obvious increasing tendencies for all ARGs transformation frequencies under only the pollution factor. The correlation between dominant bacteria and ARGs transmission implied that conjugation and transformation of ARGs were mainly determined by Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Latescibacterota, Chloroflexi and Cyanobacteria at the phylum level, and by Sphingomonas, Ensifer, IMCC26256, Rubellimicrobium, Saccharimonadales, Vicinamibacteraceae, Nocardioides, JG30-KF-CM66 at the genus level. The mentioned dominant bacteria were responsible for intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell membrane permeability (CMP) in the substrate layer, where the amplification of intracellular ROS variation were the largest with 144 and 147 % under the condition of TP and salinity, respectively, and the one of CMP variation were the highest more than 165 % under various pollution factors. Furthermore, both increasing DO and reducing salinity could be potential approaches for the inhibition of ARGs transmission in bioretention cells taking into account the simultaneous removal of conventional pollutants.

Variation in urban snow quality indicated by three seasonal sampling surveys conducted in Luleå (Sweden) within a span of 27 years

Concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS), trace metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb), Na and 16 US EPA priority PAHs in urban snow were studied in the City of Luleå in Northern Sweden. Snow was sampled at six central urban and suburban sites with various traffic intensities, in three sampling surveys (1994-95, 2002-03, 2020-21), repeated for three ages of the urban snow cover of 40, 80, and 120 days, respectively. The older data, from the 1994-95 and 2002-03 surveys, were obtained from the existing literature. The concentrations and mass loads of TSS and most trace metals studied (Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) varied with time. TSS, Zn, and Cu showed slightly higher concentrations and mass loads in the 2003 (TSS avg = 2300 μg/L, Zn avg = 620 μg/L and Cu avg = 250 μg/L) and 2021 (TSS avg = 1500 μg/L, Zn avg = 530 μg/L and Cu avg = 220 μg/L) sampling surveys, compared to the 1995 survey (TSS avg = 620 μg/L, Zn avg = 240 μg/L and Cu avg = 97 μg/L). However, no evident trend was observed between the 2003 and 2021 sampling surveys. The highest concentrations of Pb and Cd were observed in snow samples from the 1994-95 sampling survey (Pb max = 570 μg/L, Cd max = 4.6 μg/L). Results indicated higher concentrations of the pollutants studied in the city centre, compared to the residential suburbs, and in areas with heavier traffic, where concentrations of metals correlated well with traffic intensity. Fractionation analysis of trace metals indicated that Zn, Cu and Pb occurred mostly in the particulate-bound phase (>0.45 μm) containing the most of Zn, Cu, and Pb mass, at 80, 84 and 94% of the total, respectively. Over 50% of the dissolved phase of Zn and Cu was in the truly dissolved fraction (<3000 MWCO). Concentrations of PAHs also increased with traffic intensity, with pyrene being the most frequently detected PAH, likely because of the strength of sources and various physical processes influencing the snowbanks development and causing spatial and temporal variations in pollutant concentrations.

Performance of a gross pollutant trap-biofilter and sand filter treatment train for the removal of organic micropollutants from highway stormwater (field study)

This field study assessed the occurrence, event mean concentrations (EMCs), and removal of selected organic micro-pollutants (OMPs), namely, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs), nonylphenol (NP), 4-t-octylphenol (OP), and bisphenol A (BPA), in a gross pollutant trap (GPT)-biofilter/sand filter stormwater treatment train in Sundsvall, Sweden. The effects of design features of each treatment unit, including pre-sedimentation (GPT), sand filter medium, vegetation, and chalk amendment, were investigated by comparing the units' removal performances. Overall, the treatment train removed most OMPs from highway runoff effectively. The results showed that although the sand filter provided moderate (<50 % for phenolic substances) to high (50-80 % for PAHs and PHCs) removal of OMPs, adding a vegetated soil layer on top of the sand filter considerably improved the removal performance (by at least 30 %), especially for BPA, OP, and suspended solids. Moreover, GTP did not contribute to the treatment significantly. Uncertainties in the removal efficiencies of PAHs and PHCs by the filter cells increased substantially when the ratio of the influent concentration to the limit of quantification decreased. Thus, accounting for such uncertainties due to the low OMP concentrations should be considered when evaluating the removal performance of biofilters.
