Quantifying the impact of upscaled parameters on radionuclide transport in three-dimensional fracture-matrix systems

Assessing the long-term safety of geological repositories for high-level radioactive waste is critically dependent on understanding radionuclide transport in multi-scale fractured rocks. This study explores the influence of upscaled parameters on radionuclide movement within a three-dimensional fracture-matrix system using a discrete fracture-matrix (DFM) model. The developed numerical simulation workflow includes creating a random discrete fracture network, meshing of the fractures and matrix, assigning upscaled parameters, and conducting finite element simulations. We simulated the spatiotemporal evolution of radionuclide concentrations in the fractures and matrix over a century, revealing significant spatial heterogeneity driven by a heterogeneous seepage field. Employing geostatistics-based upscaling methods, we predicted the effective ranges of crucial solute transport parameters at the field scale. The matrix diffusion coefficient, matrix distribution coefficient, and longitudinal dispersivity were upscaled by factors of 2.0-3.0, 2.5-4.0, and 10-104, respectively, based on laboratory-scale measurements. Incorporating these upscaled parameters into the DFM model, we analyzed their impact on radionuclide transport. Our findings demonstrate that an upscaled matrix diffusion coefficient and matrix distribution coefficient result in a delayed transport of radionuclides in fractures by enhancing mass transfer between the fractures and rock matrix, while an upscaled longitudinal dispersivity accelerates transport by advancing the positions of concentration peaks. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the matrix distribution coefficient is the most impactful, followed by dispersivity and matrix diffusion coefficient. These insights are important for minimizing parameter uncertainties and enhancing the accuracy of predictions concerning radionuclide transport in multi-scale fractured rocks.

Adsorption-desorption of 241Am(Ⅲ) on montmorillonite colloids and quartz sand: Effects of pH, ionic strength, colloid concentration and grain size

Clay colloids in the subsurface environment have a strong adsorption capacity for radionuclides, and the mobile colloids will carry the nuclides for migration, which would promote the movability of radionuclides in the groundwater environment and pose a threat to the ecosphere. The investigations of the adsorption/desorption behaviors of radionuclides in colloids and porous media are significant for the evaluation of the geological disposal of radioactive wastes. To illustrate the adsorption/desorption behaviors of 241Am(Ⅲ) in Na-montmorillonite colloid and/or quartz sand systems at different pH (5, 7 and 9), ionic strengths (0, 0.1 and 5 mM), colloid concentrations (300 and 900 mg/L), nuclide concentrations (500, 800, 1100 and 1400 Bq/mL) and grain sizes (40 and 60 mesh), a series of batch sorption-desorption experiments were conducted. Combining the analysis of the physical and chemical properties of Na-montmorillonite with the Freundlich model, the influencing mechanism of different controlling factors is discussed. The experimental results show that the adsorption/desorption behaviors of 241Am(Ⅲ) in Na-montmorillonite colloid and/or quartz sand strongly are influenced by the pH value and ionic strength of a solution, the colloid concentration as well as quartz sand grain size. The adsorption and desorption isotherms within all the experimental conditions could be well-fitted by the Freundlich model and the correlation coefficients (R2) are bigger than 0.9. With the increase in pH, the adsorption partition coefficient (Kd) at 241Am(Ⅲ)-Na-montmorillonite colloid two-phase system and 241Am(Ⅲ)-Na-montmorillonite colloid-quartz sand three-phase system presents a trend which increases firstly followed by decreasing, due to the changes in the morphology of Am with pH. The Kd of 241Am(Ⅲ) adsorption on montmorillonite colloid and quartz sand decreases with increasing in ionic strength, which is mainly attributed to the competitive adsorption, surface complexation and the reduction of surface zeta potential. Additionally, the Kd increases with increasing colloid concentrations because of the increase in adsorption sites. When the mean grain diameter changes from 0.45 to 0.3 mm, the adsorption variation trends of 241Am(Ⅲ) remain basically unchanged. The research results obtained in this work are meaningful and helpful in understanding the migration behaviors of radionuclides in the underground environment.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in coastal sediments of Bandar Abbas city, North of Persian Gulf: An ecological risk assessment

The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs; Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), and Cadmium (Cd) Pb, Ni, and Cd), using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was measured in fifty surface coastal sediment samples collected from 5 points coastal sediment of Bandar Abbas city, Iran besides the potential ecological risk index (RI) estimated the environmental health risk. The rank order of PTEs was Pb (52.090 ± 4.113 mg/kg dry weight) > Ni (34.940 ± 8.344 mg/kg dry weight) > Cd (2.944 ± 0.013 mg/kg dry weight). RI due to PTEs in sediments for A, B, C, D, and E points were 187.655, 190.542, 191.079, 189.496, and 192.053, respectively. RI for sampling points A to E was at moderate risk (150 ≤ RI < 300). Therefore, it is recommended to carry out control programs to reduce the amount of PTEs in the coastal sediment of the Persian Gulf.

Transformation of Mononuclear Plutonium(III) Tetrazolate Complexes into Dinuclear Complexes in the Solid State

The salt metathesis reaction of Na(pmtz)·H2O [pmtz- = 5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate] and PuBr3·nH2O in an aqueous media leads to the formation of the mononuclear compound [Pu(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Pu1, n = ∼8) that is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds [Ln(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Ln = Ce-Nd). Dissolution and recrystallization of Pu1 in water yields the dinuclear compound {[Pu(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Pu2), which is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds {[Ln(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Ln = Nd and Sm). Like their nine-coordinate ionic radii, the M-O and M-N bond lengths in Pu1/Pu2 and Nd1/Nd2, respectively, are within error of one another. The Laporte-forbidden 4f → 4f and 5f → 5f transitions are also assigned in the UV-vis-NIR spectra for these f-element tetrazolate coordination compounds.

Insight into Impact of Phosphate on the Cotransport and Corelease of Eu(III) with Bentonite Colloids in Saturated Quartz Columns

Understanding the fate and transport of radionuclides in porous media reduces the risk of contaminating soils and groundwater systems. While the cotransport of bentonite colloids (BC) with radionuclides in saturated media is well documented, the role of phosphate (P) in the colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in saturated porous media is still unaddressed; in particular, phosphate increases the mobilities of radionuclides in porous media, which should be subjected to an environmental risk assessment and model construction. In this work, the effects of phosphate on the transport and release of Eu(III) in different colloid systems (P-Eu(III), P-BC, P-BC-Eu(III)) was investigated with a fundamental colloid chemistry approach and a range of characterization techniques. The results showed that intrinsic europium colloids with size of 685 nm were formed by precipitation with phosphate, which affected the mobility of Eu(III) due to colloid stability and physical straining. Phosphate enhanced BC and BC-Eu(III) transport, and a high phosphate concentration promoted BC transport by eliminating physical straining and enhancing the electrostatic repulsions. The crystal structure of EuPO4 was not destroyed by the subsequent introduction of BC, which carried EuPO4 for further migration. However, when phosphate, bentonite and Eu(III) coexisted in a colloid suspension, the phosphate promoted Eu(III) transport by preferentially interacting with the BC to form ternary BC-P-Eu(III) pseudo-colloids rather than forming the intrinsic EuPO4 colloids. The synergetic role of P and BC on Eu(III) transport involved a relatively complex process and was not a simply additive effect. The findings in this work highlight the significance of phosphate in controlling the fate and transport of Ln(III)/Am(III) radionuclides in the presence of intrinsic colloids and pseudo-colloids in P-rich colloid-bearing environments.

Efficient adsorption of methylene blue in water by nitro-functionalized metal-organic skeleton‑calcium alginate composite aerogel

This paper presents the first investigation of the adsorption performance of methylene blue by the nitro-functionalized metal-organic framework (MIL-88B-NO2). MIL-88B-NO2 has a specific surface area of 836.0 m2/g, which is 109.8 % higher than MIL-88B. The maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue is 383.6 mg/g, which is 68.2 % higher than that of MIL-88B. This phenomenon can be attributed to the great increase in specific surface area and the introduction of nitro-functional groups. However, its microcrystalline nature makes it difficult to remove in practical applications and quickly causes secondary pollution. Therefore, the composite of MIL-88B-NO2 and calcium alginate (CA) to form aerogel maintains the inherent properties of the two materials and makes it easy to recycle. The utmost adsorption capability of MIL-88B-NO2/CA-2 aerogel is 721.0 mg/g. Compared with MIL-88B-NO2, the adsorption performance of MIL-88B-NO2/CA-2 aerogel is further improved by 88.0 %. The higher adsorption capacity of the adsorbent may be due to the synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, π-π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, metal coordination effect, and physicochemical properties. Also, MIL-88B-NO2/CA-2 aerogel has good recyclability, indicating that it has broad application prospects in the removal of positive dyes in contaminated water.

A new spatial estimation model and source apportionment of aliphatic hydrocarbons in coastal surface sediments of the Nayband Bay, Persian Gulf

Hydrocarbons, originating from oil and gas industries, are considered a potential risk for Nayband Bay, a natural marine park with extended mangroves, located on the north coastlines of the Persian Gulf, Iran. This paper determines the potential sources and spatial distribution of hydrocarbons, especially aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHCs), in Nayband Bay through the simultaneous application of three indices in the coastline surface sediments. To this end, a field study was conducted in the inter-tidal coastal zones and wetlands. Sediment samples were taken from surface layers along four transects with four sampling points at different distances from the gulf. The hydrocarbon compounds of the samples including AHCs, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and heavy metals (Ni, V as crude oil indicators) were analyzed and classified to discover the pollution indicators. Pearson pairwise correlation and cluster analyses along with pollution indices were employed to describe the spatial distribution pattern of hydrocarbons, identify hot spots, and determine the potential origin of AHCs. Different interpolation scenarios based on topographic and oceanic features were proposed to detect the spatial dynamics of AHCs. The results revealed that hydrocarbons mainly originated from anthropogenic sources including oil and gas industries located far from the affected area. It was also concluded that the long-distance pollution transfer was based on oceanic currents and wind direction in the bay. The proposed scenarios showed that the mean concentration values of total organic carbon and total organic material vary in the range 0.19 ppm to 0.4 ppm and 2.88 ppm to 3.20 ppm, respectively.

Implications of solid waste dumps on the microplastic abundance in groundwater in Kollam, India

Water pollution caused by microplastics has garnered increasing attention in recent years due to its potential ecological and human health risks. However, there are very limited studies and a general lack of consensus regarding the presence and negative impacts of microplastics in groundwater. Due to their small size, microplastics can easily be transported at surface as well as subsurface levels, potentially reaching the groundwater table and contaminating the groundwater system This contamination is expected to occur more rapidly in landfill areas and other locations where plastic waste is dumped. In this study, we examined well water samples collected from areas near various dumping sites to assess the abundance and characteristics of microplastics. An average of 12 items/L of microplastics were found in groundwater wells near eight dumping sites in Kollam Corporation. The predominant shape of microplastics in the groundwater samples was fibres, followed by flakes, with black being the predominant colour. The areal extent of solid waste dumping was observed to have an influence on the abundance of microplastics. Additionally, the pH of groundwater near heavy dumping sites was found to be in the acidic range, indicating the intrusion of leachate from dumps into groundwater. The study revealed that the leachate from solid waste dumps is the primary source of microplastics in groundwater. Furthermore, a risk assessment of the microplastic pollution was carried out using an index namely Microplastic Pollution Index and the areas of high risks were identified. The locations having heavy solid waste dumping and those near coastal areas were observed to be at high risk, thereby indicating that both the leachate from dumps and sea water intrusion can cause higher microplastic pollution risk in the groundwater system. The findings of this study are expected to support managers in formulating and implementing effective solid waste management plans to mitigate microplastic pollution in the groundwater system.

A review on radionuclide pollution in global soils with environmental and health hazards evaluation

Human populations are being exposed to a wide spectrum of radiation from soils as a result of the availability of radiation sources. Assessing the ecological and health effects of radionuclides in soils is crucial to support the optimal soil management practices but large-scale studies are limited. This study compiled data on radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 238U, and 137Cs) in soils located across the world (44 countries and 159 places) between 2008 and 2022 and applied radiological hazards indices and several multivariate statistical approaches. The average activity concentration (Bq/kg) of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 238U, and 137Cs were 408.56, 144.80, 508.78, 532.78, and 83.12, respectively, whereas 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 238U exceeded the standard limits. The principal component analysis explained more than 91% of variation in soils. Based on the geoaccumulation index, 40K posed moderately to heavy contamination whereas 238U and 226Ra posed moderate contamination in soils. Moreover, the mean values of radiological hazards evaluation such as radium equivalent activity (487.17 Bq/kg), external radiation hazard indices (1.32), internal hazard indices (2.15), absorbed dose rate (247.86 nGyh-1), annual effective dose rate (1.82 mSvy-1), activity utilization index (4.54) and excess lifetime cancer risk (63.84 × 10-4) were higher than recommended limit suggesting significant radiological risks in study region soils. The findings indicated that the study area soils were contaminated by radionuclides and unsafe for hazards in terms of the health risks linked with studied radioactive contents. The study is valuable for mapping radioactivity across the globe to determine the level of radioactivity hazards.

Investigating the influence of bentonite colloids on strontium sorption in granite under various hydrogeochemical conditions

The disposal of high-level radioactive waste in deep geological repositories is a critical environmental issue. The presence of bentonite colloids generated in the engineering barrier can significantly impact the transport of radionuclides, but their effect on radionuclide sorption in granite remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the sorption characteristics of strontium (Sr) on granite as well as on the coexistence system of granite and colloids under various hydrogeochemical conditions, through batch experiments. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to analyze the sorption forms of Sr on granite before and after sorption. Several hydrogeochemical factors were examined, including contact time, pH, ionic strength, coexisting ions, and bentonite and humic acid colloid concentration. Among these factors, the concentration of bentonite colloids exhibited a significant effect on Sr sorption. Within a specific range of colloid concentration, the sorption of Sr on the solid system increased linearly with the bentonite colloid concentration. pH and ionic strength were also found to play crucial roles in the sorption process. At low pH, Sr sorption primarily occurred through the outer sphere's surface complexation and Na+/H+ ion exchange. However, at high pH, inner sphere surface complexation dominated the process. As the ionic strength increased, electrostatic repulsion gradually increased, resulting in fewer binding sites for particle aggregation and Sr sorption on bentonite colloids. The results also indicate that with increasing pH, the predominant forms of Sr in the solution transitioned from SrHCO3+ and SrCl+ to SrCO3 and SrCl+. This was mainly due to the ion exchange of Ca2+/Mg2+ in plagioclase and biotite, forming SrCO3 precipitation. These findings provide valuable insights into the transport behavior of radionuclides in the subsurface environment of the repository and highlight the importance of considering bentonite colloids and other hydrogeochemical factors when assessing the environmental impact of high-level radioactive waste disposal.

Evaluating hydrogeochemical controls and noncarcinogenic health risk assessment of fluoride concentration in groundwater of Palacode and Pennagaram taluk, Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu, India

This study focuses on assessing hydrochemical characteristics and non-carcinogenic health risks associated with fluoride contamination in groundwater within the Palacode and Pennagaram taluks of Dharmapuri district. The presence of fluoride in drinking water is a significant concern due to its potential health impacts on both adults and children. We collected a total of 158 groundwater samples during both the summer (SUM) and monsoon (MON) seasons in 2021 to evaluate the suitability of water for drinking purposes in this region. During the SUM season, groundwater exhibits alkaline characteristics with a pH range of 6.70 to 8.73 and a mean value of 7.43, while the MON season falls within the neutral pH range with values ranging from 6.60 to 7.60 and a mean of 7.00. Hydrogeochemical analysis reveals that fluoride concentrations during the SUM season range from 0.13 to 2.7 mg/L, with a mean of 0.82 mg/L, whereas the MON season exhibits concentrations ranging from 0.08 to 1.6 mg/L, with a mean of 0.5 mg/L. Spatial distribution analysis indicates a gradual increase in fluoride concentrations from the northeast to the central and southern parts of the study area during both seasons. Residents in these areas have been exposed to high fluoride levels for an extended period, leading to health issues related to fluorosis. Our hydrogeochemical analysis attributes fluoride dominance to the Cl--SO42- water type in both seasons. Furthermore, the relationship between fluoride and pH, HCO3-, Ca2+, and Na+ suggests the influence of geological factors in fluoride dissolution under alkaline conditions, while a reverse cation exchange process and increasing calcium concentration inhibit fluoride concentration. Saturation indices indicate that the unsaturated state of gypsum dissolution contributes to elevated fluoride levels in groundwater. Additionally, Gibbs plots highlight rock-water interactions as a significant factor influencing groundwater chemistry in the study area. Based on our hazard quotient (HQ) investigation, children are at a higher risk during both seasons compared to adults, with the central and northern regions showing alarming HQ values. These findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced groundwater quality monitoring and a comprehensive assessment of health risks, providing valuable insights for groundwater safety management in vulnerable areas of this region.

Heavy metals contamination, receptor model-based sources identification, sources-specific ecological and health risks in road dust of a highly developed city

The present study quantified Ni, Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd, As, Zn, and Fe levels in road dust collected from a variety of sites in Tangail, Bangladesh. The goal of this study was to use a matrix factorization model to identify the specific origin of these components and to evaluate the ecological and health hazards associated with each potential origin. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, As, Zn, Cd, and Fe. The average concentrations of these elements were found to be 30.77 ± 8.80, 25.17 ± 6.78, 39.49 ± 12.53, 28.74 ± 7.84, 1.90 ± 0.79, 158.30 ± 28.25, 2.42 ± 0.69, and 18,185.53 ± 4215.61 mg/kg, respectively. Compared to the top continental crust, the mean values of Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd were 1.09, 1.69, 2.36, and 26.88 times higher, respectively. According to the Nemerow integrated pollution index (NIPI), pollution load index (PLI), Nemerow integrated risk index (NIRI), and potential ecological risk (PER), 84%, 42%, 30%, and 16% of sampling areas, respectively, which possessed severe contamination. PMF model revealed that Cu (43%), Fe (69.3%), and Cd (69.2%) were mainly released from mixed sources, natural sources, and traffic emission, respectively. Traffic emission posed high and moderate risks for modified NIRI and potential ecological risks. The calculated PMF model-based health hazards indicated that the cancer risk value for traffic emission, natural, and mixed sources had been greater than (1.0E-04), indicating probable cancer risks and that traffic emission posed 38% risk to adult males where 37% for both adult females and children.

UV and solar-based photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants from ceramics industrial wastewater by Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles

UV and solar-based photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as an organic contaminant in ceramics industry wastewater by ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS NPs was the focus of this research. Nanoparticles were prepared using a chemical precipitation process. The cubic, closed-packed structure of undoped ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS NPs was formed in spherical clusters, according to XRD and SEM investigations. According to optical studies, the optical band gaps of pure ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles are 3.35 and 2.51 eV, respectively, and Fe doping increased the number of carriers with high mobility, improved carrier separation and injection efficiency, and increased photocatalytic activity under UV or visible light. Doping of Fe increased the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes and facilitated charge transfer, according to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations. Photocatalytic degradation studies revealed that in the present pure ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles, 100% treatment of 120 mL of 15 mg/L phenolic compound was obtained after 55- and 45-min UV-irradiation, respectively, and complete treatment was attained after 45 and 35-min solar light irradiation, respectively. Because of the synergistic effects of effective surface area, more effective photo-generated electron and hole separation efficiency, and enhanced electron transfer, Fe-doped ZnS demonstrated high photocatalytic degradation performance. The study of Fe-doped ZnS's practical photocatalytic treatment capability for removing 120 mL of 10 mg/L 2,4-DCP solution made from genuine ceramic industrial wastewater revealed Fe-doped ZnS's excellent photocatalytic destruction of 2,4-DCP from real industrial wastewater.

Upscaling dispersivity for conservative solute transport in naturally fractured media

Physical heterogeneities are prevalent features of fracture systems and significantly impact transport processes in aquifers across different spatiotemporal scales. Upscaling solute transport parameter is an effective way of quantifying parameter variability in heterogeneous aquifers including fractured media. This paper develops conceptual models for upscaling conservative transport parameters in fracture media. The focus is on upscaling dispersivity. Lagrangian-based transport model (LBTM) for dispersivity upscaling are derived for the solute transport in two-dimensional fractures surrounded by an impermeable matrix. The LBTM is validated against the random walk particle tracking (RWPT) model, which enables highly efficient and accurate predictions of conservative solute transport. The results show that the derived scale-dependent analytical expressions are in excellent agreement with RWPT model results. In addition, LBTM results are also compared to experimental results from the observed breakthrough curve of a conservative solute transport through a single natural fracture within a granite core. Comparing results from the LBTM and transport experiment shows that LBTM based estimated dispersivity is 10.55% higher than the measured value. Errors introduced by the experiments, the conceptual assumptions in deriving models, and the heterogeneities of fracture apertures not fully sampled by measuring instruments are main factor for such discrepancy. The sensitivity analysis indicates that the longitudinal and transverse dispersivities are positively related to the integral scale and the variance of the log-fracture aperture. The longitudinal dispersivity is strongly contolled by the variance of the log-fracture aperture. The LBTM may be useful for directly predicting solute transports, requiring only the acquisition of fractured geostatistical data. This work provides a better understanding of transport processes in fractured media which ultimately control water quality across scales.

Ecological risk identification and assessment of land remediation project based on GIS technology

A land remediation project involves the removal of potentially toxic chemicals from a polluted site. Lands abandoned by industry are often contaminated with heavy metals like mercury, lead, chemicals, arsenic, and other toxins like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane biphenyls from electronic devices, and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from lubricants and chemicals. Risk assessment in environmental settings requires modernized systematic methodologies due to the complexity of today's environmental problems. When people eat, drink, or work in polluted environments, they put their health at risk and may even get cancer. Integrating geospatial information systems (GIS) with pollutant dispersion models makes environmental risk assessment and early warning possible. This research thus presents a GIS-based ecological risk identification and assessment model (GIS-ERIAM) for assessing risk for efficient land rehabilitation. Environmental cleanup sites' catalog information is the source of these details. With satellite imagery, GIS makes it simple to keep an eye on the environment and track the abundance of different types of plants and animals The ecological risk assessment (ERA) model can support recognition and prioritize risk management. By integrating direct and indirect environment interactions, the risk conditions of the whole ecology and its elements have been quantified and demonstrated in the study. The numerical outcomes illustrate that the recommended GIS-ERIAM model improves the performance by 98.9%, risk level prediction by 97.3%, risk classification by 96.4%, and detection of soil degradation ratio of 95.6% compared to other existing methods.

Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions adsorption through Amberlite XAD-7 resin impregnated via CYANEX-272 extractant

The goal of this paper is to investigate the ability of Amberlite XAD-7 (AXAD-7) resin impregnated with CYANEX-272 (di-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphonic acid) to remove cerium (Ce(ΙΙΙ)) and lanthanum (La(ΙΙΙ)) ions from aqueous solutions in the batch scheme. The prepared adsorbent material was determined utilizing FTIR, SEM-EDX, and BET methods. The impact of three individual process variable factors involving feed solution pH (2-6), adsorbent dose (0.05-0.65), and process temperature (15-55 °C) on the simultaneous removal of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions was evaluated via response surface methodology (RSM) according to the central composite design (CCD). The modeling of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions adsorption was performed using the quadratic model and was evaluated using a coefficient of determination for both ions. The optimization data revealed that the adsorption amount of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions removal under optimal conditions were 99.75% and 69.98%, respectively. Equilibrium and kinetic investigations were also conducted to define the removal performance of the calculated adsorbent for Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions removal. Various isotherms models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Sips were examined at 25 °C to analyze the equilibrium isotherm data. The data revealed that the Sips approach is compatible with the experimental data. The highest adsorption capacity of the resin for Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions were 11.873 mg g^-1 and 7.324 mg g^-1, correspondingly. The kinetic study of the Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) adsorption process was conducted via pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models(IDMs). Based on the data obtained, kinetic data were fitted well to a pseudo-second-order rate correlation. According to the obtained results, the (AXAD-7) resin impregnated with CYANEX-272 performed well in removing both Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions from aqueous solutions with well stability during several adsorption-desorption cycles and well regeneration and excellent metallic ions recovery.
