The Most-Cited Works in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-Cited Articles

The recent two decades of traumatic brain injury: a bibliometric analysis and systematic review

BACKGROUND

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health burden worldwide, with a mortality rate of 20-30%; however, reducing the incidence and mortality rates of TBI remains a major challenge. This study provides a multidimensional analysis to explore the potential breakthroughs in TBI over the past two decades.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The authors used bibliometric and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) analyses to analyze publications focusing on TBI published between 2003 and 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database to identify core journals and collaborations among countries/regions, institutions, authors, and research trends.

RESULTS

Over the past 20 years, 41 545 articles on TBI from 3043 journals were included, with 12 916 authors from 20 449 institutions across 145 countries/regions. The annual number of publications has increased 10-fold compared to previous publications. This study revealed that high-income countries, especially the United States, have a significant influence. Collaboration was limited to several countries/regions. The LDA results indicated that the hotspots included four main areas: 'Clinical finding', 'Molecular mechanism', 'Epidemiology', and 'Prognosis'. Epidemiological research has consistently increased in recent years. Through epidemiological topic analysis, the main etiology of TBI has shifted from traffic accidents to falls in a demographically aging society.

CONCLUSION

Over the past two decades, TBI research has developed rapidly, and its epidemiology has received increasing attention. Reducing the incidence of TBI from a preventive perspective is emerging as a trend to alleviate the future social burden; therefore, epidemiological research might bring breakthroughs in TBI.

Trends in Brain Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Bibliometrics methods have allowed researchers to assess the popularity of brain research through the ever-growing number of brain-related research papers. While many topics of brain research have been covered by previous studies, there is no comprehensive overview of the evolution of brain research and its various specialties and funding practices over a long period of time.

OBJECTIVE

This paper aims to (1) determine how brain research has evolved over time in terms of number of papers, (2) countries' relative and absolute positioning in terms of papers and impact, and (3) how those various trends vary by area.

METHODS

Using a list of validated keywords, we extracted brain-related articles and journals indexed in the Web of Science over the 1991-2020 period, for a total of 2,467,708 papers. We used three indicators to perform: number of papers, specialization, and research impact.

RESULTS

Our results show that over the past 30 years, the number of brain-related papers has grown at a faster pace than science in general, with China being at the forefront of this growth. Different patterns of specialization among countries and funders were also underlined. Finally, the NIH, the European Commission, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the UK Medical Research Council, and the German Research Foundation were found to be among the top funders.

CONCLUSION

Despite data-related limitations, our findings provide a large-scope snapshot of the evolution of brain research and its funding, which may be used as a baseline for future studies on these topics.

A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 cited articles for hemangioblastoma of the central nervous system

Hemangioblastoma is a rare benign tumor that can affect the central nervous system sporadically or in association with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome. Despite the advances in the medical field, hemangioblastoma still has a significant morbidity and mortality burden. This review gathered and analyzed this entity's top one hundred cited articles. The Scopus database was screened using the following keywords ("Hemangioblastoma" OR "Haemangioblastoma" OR "Hemangioblastomata"). The results were sorted by citation count, highest to lowest. Articles discussing hemangioblastoma of the central nervous system were included. Two independent reviewers extracted the article-, author-, and Journal-based data. Articles were classified into four categories: clinical features/ natural history, treatment, histopathology, review, or radiology. The location, brain, spine, or both, and type, sporadic, VHL-associated, or both, were used to classify the articles. The search query resulted in 4023 articles, and the top 100 most cited articles were included. The number of citations totaled 8781, averaging 87.81 CC per article. The included papers were published in 41 different journals between 1952 and 2014 by more than 11 departments from 65 institutions and 16 countries. The number of citations ranged from 46 to 333. The peak publication activity was before the 2000s, contributing to 62% of all articles, and the most prolific decade was 1990-2000, with 37 publications. We conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of data from the most influential publications on central nervous system hemangioblastoma. We identified publication dynamics and research gaps. More high-impact studies are warranted to enhance disease comprehension and management.

Research trends within aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage from 2017 to 2021: a bibliometric study

Bibliometric analyses are a well-established strategy for understanding the dynamics of publications. Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a hot topic in neurology and neurosurgery research. To perform a bibliometric analysis of recent publications within aSAH. Articles addressing aSAH published between 2017 and 2021 were included and had their information extracted from Scopus. A total of 2177 articles were included. The mean number of citations was 6.18 (95%CI = 5.77-6.59). 2021 and 2020 were the most prolific years. World Neurosurgery (N = 389/2,177 articles; 17,87%) was the leading publisher, and American Journal of Neuroradiology had the highest number of citations per article (14.82) among journals with ≥ 10 publications. Primary research (N = 1624/2177) predominated, followed by case reports (N = 434/2,177). Among secondary studies, systematic reviews (N = 78/119) surpassed narrative reviews (N = 41/119). USA led the number of publications (N = 548/2,177 articles; 25.17%), followed by China (N = 358/2,177 articles; 16.44%). High-income countries had a higher number of publications (N = 1624/2177) and more citations per article (6.84) than middle-income countries (N = 553/2177 and 4.25, respectively). There were zero articles from low-income countries. European and North American institutions had the greatest research impact. There was an increase in the number of published articles in the last few years (2020 and 2021). Many studies had a low level of evidence, whereas interventional studies were uncommon.

A bibliometric analysis on traumatic brain injury in forensic medicine of a half-century (1972-2021)

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common injuries in forensic medicine, the identification of which is of particular importance in forensic practice. To reveal the circumstances and trends of TBI in the forensic field, we used the Web of Science (WoS) database for comprehensive retrieval. We made a metrological analysis of 1,089 papers in the past 50 years (1972-2021). The United States and Germany have the most forensic research on TBI. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) has been the focus of attention for many years, and much effort has been devoted to its diagnosis in forensic pathology. Infants and children are the subgroups of most concern, especially in infant and child abuse cases. Research on identifying shaken baby syndrome has received increasing attention in recent years. Overall, our study provides a comprehensive list and analysis of the articles regarding TBI in legal medicine, which may shed light on recognizing the trends and research hotspots in this field.

Establishing ground truth in the traumatic brain injury literature: if replication is the answer, then what are the questions?

The replication crisis poses important challenges to modern science. Central to this challenge is re-establishing ground truths or the most fundamental theories that serve as the bedrock to a scientific community. However, the goal to identify hypotheses with the greatest support is non-trivial given the unprecedented rate of scientific publishing. In this era of high-volume science, the goal of this study is to sample from one research community within clinical neuroscience (traumatic brain injury) and track major trends that have shaped this literature over the past 50 years. To do so, we first conduct a decade-wise (1980-2019) network analysis to examine the scientific communities that shape this literature. To establish the robustness of our findings, we utilized searches from separate search engines (Web of Science; Semantic Scholar). As a second goal, we sought to determine the most highly cited hypotheses influencing the literature in each decade. In a third goal, we then searched for any papers referring to 'replication' or efforts to reproduce findings within our >50 000 paper dataset. From this search, 550 papers were analysed to determine the frequency and nature of formal replication studies over time. Finally, to maximize transparency, we provide a detailed procedure for the creation and analysis of our dataset, including a discussion of each of our major decision points, to facilitate similar efforts in other areas of neuroscience. We found that the unparalleled rate of scientific publishing within the brain injury literature combined with the scarcity of clear hypotheses in individual publications is a challenge to both evaluating accepted findings and determining paths forward to accelerate science. Additionally, while the conversation about reproducibility has increased over the past decade, the rate of published replication studies continues to be a negligible proportion of the research. Meta-science and computational methods offer the critical opportunity to assess the state of the science and illuminate pathways forward, but ultimately there is structural change needed in the brain injury literature and perhaps others.

Trends in major intensive care medicine journals: A machine learning approach

PURPOSE

Intensive care medicine (ICM) has the particularity of being a multidisciplinary specialty and its literature reflects this multidisciplinarity. However, the proportion of each field in this literature and its trend dynamics are not known. The objective of this study was to analyze the ICM literature, extract latent topics and search for the presence of research trends.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Abstracts of original articles from the top ICM journals, from their inception until December 31st, 2019, were included. This corpus was fed into a structural topic modeling algorithm to extract latent semantic topics. The temporal distribution was then analyzed and the presence of trends was searched by Mann-Kendall trends tests.

RESULTS

Finally, 49,276 articles from 10 journals were included. After topic modeling analysis and experts' feedback, 124 research topics were selected and labeled. Topics were categorized into 19 categories, the most represented being respiratory, fundamental and neurological research. Increasing trends were observed for research on mechanical ventilation and decreasing trends for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

CONCLUSIONS

This study reviewed all articles from major ICM journals in a comprehensive way. It provides a better understanding of ICM research landscape by analyzing the temporal evolution of latent research topics in the ICM literature.

Dynamic structures and emerging trends in the management of major trauma: A bibliometric analysis of publications between 2012 and 2021

Objective

Major trauma is currently a global public health issue with a massive impact on health at both the individual and population levels. However, there are limited bibliometric analyses on the management of major trauma. Thus, in this study we aimed to identify global research trends, dynamic structures, and scientific frontiers in the management of major trauma between 2012 and 2021.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science Core Collection to access articles and reviews concerning the management of major traumas and conducted a bibliometric analysis using CiteSpace.

Results

Overall, 2,585 studies were screened and published by 403 institutions from 110 countries/regions. The most productive country and institution in this field of research were the USA and Monash University, respectively. Rolf Lefering was the most prolific researcher and Holcomb JB had the most co-citations. Injury published the highest number of articles, and the Journal of Trauma was the most co-cited journal. A dual-map overlay of the literature showed that the articles of most publications were confined to the areas of medicine/medical/clinical and neurology/sports/ophthalmology. Document clustering indicated severe traumatic brain injury, traumatic coagulopathy, and resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion as the recent hot topics. The most recent burst keywords were "trauma management," "neurocritical care," "injury severity," and "emergency medical services."

Conclusion

The dynamic structures and emerging trends in the management of major trauma were extensively analyzed using CiteSpace, a visualization software. Based on the analysis, the following research hotspots emerged: management of severe traumatic brain injury and massive hemorrhage, neurocritical care, injury severity, and emergency medical service. Our findings provide pertinent information for future research and contribute toward policy making in this field.

Publication Trends of Nonobstetric Brachial Plexus Injury Research: A Bibliometric Analysis

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate publication trends in nonobstetric brachial plexus injury research.

METHODS

In September 2020, Scopus was searched for articles on nonobstretric brachial plexus injury. Citation count, year of publication, country of corresponding author and its income category, destiny journal and its 5-year impact factor (IF), and research type were retrieved.

RESULTS

The analysis comprised 1245 articles. Mean number of citations per article was 18.01 (95% confidence interval 16.46-19.55). Mean IF was 3.60 (95% confidence interval 3.25-3.95). The 5 most prolific journals had an IF <5. The journal with the highest number of articles was the Journal of Hand Surgery (American Volume) (n = 70, 5.6%). The most prolific country was the United States (n = 313, 25.1%). There were 913 articles (73.3%) from high-income countries, 246 (19.8%) from upper middle-income countries, and 68 (5.5%) from lower middle-income countries. No articles were from low-income countries. The representation of middle-income countries increased from 2.1% of published articles in 1980-1989 to 40.0% in 2010-2019. Primary research represented 64.0% (n = 797) of articles, while secondary research and case reports represented 13.0% (n = 162) and 23.0% (n = 286) of articles, respectively. Narrative reviews (n = 142, 11.4%;) and systematic reviews (n = 20, 1.6%) comprised articles from the secondary research group.

CONCLUSIONS

While high-income countries still represent the majority of publications, the contribution of researchers from middle-income countries is increasing. The most common destiny journals are field specific, with a relatively low IF. Although most articles are primary research, a representative portion have a shallow level of evidence (case reports and narrative reviews).

A Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization of the Top-Cited Publications in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Background: For measuring their impact in scientific research, the citation count of the publications is used in the bibliometric analysis, though still in the bibliometric analysis, there is no comprehensive summary of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) research. This article intends to provide the physicians and the neuroscientists with a reference guide to assess the most influential publications written on this subject through a macroscopic view of the research activities on mTBI.

Methods: The database of the Web of Science was used to compile the 100 top-ranking publications on mTBI. The selected publications were evaluated on the basis of the several categorizations including the type of the publications, number of citations, country of origin, and year of publication.

Results: Between 1946 and 2020, the 13,040 publications that were published were included in the database. The least cited publications received 274 citations, while the most cited received 1,748. Altogether, 71 publications were from the USA while 29 were from other countries. Among all the institutions, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center led the list with six publications. Around 100 papers, mostly on the clinical studies in the categories of neurology and neurosciences, were published in 54 different journals.

Conclusions: This study provides both a transverse section summary and historical retrospect for the clinical advances of mTBI, and the publications of important observations that contributed a significant impact on the treatment and prevention of mTBI had been identified.

A Holistic Assessment of Organ Transplantation Activities, Scientific Productivity on Brain Death in Islamic Countries, and Comparison of the Outcomes with the United Nations Development Statistics

About one-fourth of the world population belongs to the religion of Islam, and a significant number of people in the Muslim society, including health professionals, are dedicated themselves to the holy book Qur'an but unclear about the religious teachings on organ donation and transplantation. These people are dependent on religious rulings declared by ecclesiastical authorities (scholars and imams). In this study, we aimed to question the attitude of Islamic nations on organ donation and transplantation. Secondly, we endeavored to investigate how the Islamic perspective on these issues influences scientific productivity about the subject of brain death, which is undeviatingly related to organ transplantation. The term "brain death" was searched in Thomson Reuters, Web of Science search engine, only including Muslim countries. All of the data obtained were subjected to bibliometric analysis. We also compared the transplantation statistics of Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation Organization with the development statistics of the United Nations (UN). The two leading Muslim countries in terms of scientific productivity about brain death are Turkey and Iran. Transplantation proceedings is the leading scientific journal on this subject. These two countries have outperformed other Islamic countries in terms of organ donation and transplantation statistics. We also revealed that the human development index and education index of the UN have a positive correlation with the number of deceased transplantation, which is directly related to the number of brain-death-diagnosed cases (r 0.696, p < 0.05 and r 0.771, p < 0.05, respectively). Additionally, we found a positive correlation between expenditure on research and development data of the UN with the number of total transplantations performed and the number of scientific articles on brain death (r 0.889, p 0.01 and r 0.634, p < 0.05, respectively). There is not a consensus about brain death and organ transplantation in Islamic nations, and the majority of these countries have various hindrances about organ donation and transplantation. The legal authorities, health professionals, religious rulers, and media should spend every effort to educate the people on organ donation and transplantation. And, policymakers of Islamic nations should allocate extra funds for education and scientific activities to break down negative views on organ donation and transplantation.

A Bibliographic Analysis of the Most Cited Articles in Global Neurosurgery

OBJECTIVE

Global neurosurgery is the practice of neurosurgery with the primary purpose of delivering timely, safe, and affordable neurosurgical care to all who need it. The aim of this study is to identify the most frequently cited articles in global neurosurgery through a bibliographic review to characterize articles and trends around this growing topic.

METHODS

The top most-cited articles in global neurosurgery were determined by searching the Web of Science database using a priori search terms. Articles with at least 5 citations were selected, and there were no time period or language restrictions. The data were extracted from each included article and all characteristics were summarized.

RESULTS

A total of 932 articles were identified using the search terms; 69 articles fulfilled inclusion criteria and 17 articles were selected that had more than 5 citations. The articles' number of citations ranged from 6 to 98 for the most-cited article. Authors from, or affiliated with, 14 countries contributed to the 17 articles, and the country that had the greatest representation was the United States. The main topic discussed was surgical capacity, the second topic was the treatment of different neurosurgical conditions, and volunteerism was the third topic.

CONCLUSIONS

There is currently a deficit in both the amount of literature surrounding the topic of global neurosurgery and how much that literature is cited. Developing innovative ways to increase academic productivity within, or in collaboration with, low-middle income countries is essential to contribute to global neurosurgery.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Most Cited Articles in Neurocritical Care Research

Bibliometric analyses may indicate the most active journals, authors, countries, institutions and specialties by evaluating the most cited articles in a given research field. To the authors' knowledge, there is no bibliometric analysis regarding neurocritical care research. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze and to provide a scope of the current scientific production in this area. The 100 most cited articles in the neurocritical care research were retrieved from the research "(neurocritical) AND (care)" in the Scopus database. The variables collected and included in this analysis were: number of citations, article title, first author's name, year and journal of publication and its impact factor (IF), specialty, affiliation and country of the corresponding author at the time of publication, and category of the article. Also, these variables were assessed for primary research only. The articles were published in 34 different journals from 1995 to 2017, with a mean citation number of 109.36, ranging from 44 to 540. Neurocritical Care (23 articles in top 100 and 2190 citations, IF = 3.163) and Critical Care Medicine (20 articles and 2896 citations in top 100, IF = 6.630) were the journals with the greatest number of articles and citations, respectively. Neurocritical Care also had the highest number of primary research papers (15 articles, accounting for 850 citations). Excepting one article from Asia (Singapore) and one from Oceania (Australia), all the other 98 papers were from North America (67) or Europe (31). United States was the country with most articles (60, 35 primary research) and citations (6115) among the top 100. Columbia University (11 articles, being 7 primary research, and 915 citations) was the institution with the highest number of articles and primary research articles in top 100, whereas University of Heidelberg (6 articles and 1220 citations) was the most cited institution. Neurology was the specialty with the greatest number of publications in top 100 and the most cited one (57 articles and 5983 citations). The first author with the greatest number of publications as well as primary research articles was A. I. Qureshi (5 articles, being 4 primary research, and 660 citations), while the most cited was K. H. Polderman (2 articles and 749 citations). Fifty-nine publications were primary and 41 secondary research. Among primary research, treatment/management was the most frequent and most cited topics (33 articles and 4172 citations). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first bibliometric analysis regarding neurocritical care research. Our findings suggest that the neurocritical care research field is more prominent in North America and Europe, more frequently published in specific critical care journals and after 1994. The most discussed topic was related to treatment and/or management within neurocritical care.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the Articles Focusing on the Subject of Brain Death Published in Scientific Citation Index-Expanded Indexed Journals: Analysis of 3487 Articles Published Between 1995-2019

BACKGROUND

Although the topic of brain death (BD) has been increasing in popularity considerably in recent years by the snowballing number of patients suffering from end-organ failure and waiting for organ transplantation, the literature indicates insufficient information regarding the comparison of scientific articles focusing on BD, authors' and nations', even governments' tendency about this issue.

OBJECTIVES

In the present study, we aimed to make a bibliometric analysis of the articles focusing on the subject of BD, which is one of the most trendy topics in organ transplantation.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The terms "brain death," were searched in Thomson Reuters, Web of Science search engine for the years between 1995 and 2019. All the articles found were subjected to bibliometric analysis.

RESULTS

Web of Science database included 3487 articles. The United States was found to be the most productive country in all methods, and Transplantation Proceedings was the journal that contributed most to the literature on the subject of BD. A positive correlation between publication productivity and gross domestic product/gross domestic product per capita and human development index was found (r = 0.470, P < .05; r = 0.359, P < .05; r = 0.603, P < .001, respectively). Also, there was a negative correlation between the number of published articles and the population of the country (r = -0.083, P < .001).

CONCLUSION

Although the top country focusing on the subject of BD was the United States in terms of bibliometrics, we found that there is a correlation between the indices measuring the welfare and development level of the country and publication productivity about BD, which means developed countries show more tendency about BD, which is the main component of the definitive treatment of end-organ failure.

A comparison of publication to TBI burden ratio of low- and middle-income countries versus high-income countries: how can we improve worldwide care of TBI?

OBJECTIVE

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and more than 70% of trauma-related deaths are estimated to occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nevertheless, there is a consistent lack of data from these countries. The aim of this work is to estimate the capacity of different and heterogeneous areas of the world to report and publish data on TBI. In addition, we wanted to estimate the countries with the highest and lowest number of publications when taking into account the relative TBI burden.

METHODS

First, a bibliometric analysis of all the publications about TBI available in the PubMed database from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2018, was performed. These data were tabulated by country and grouped according to each geographical region as indicated by the WHO: African Region (AFR), Region of the Americas (PAH), South-East Asia Region (SEAR), European Region (EUR), Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), and Western Pacific Region (WPR). In this analysis, PAH was further subdivided into Latin America (AMR-L) and North America (AMR-US/Can). Then a “publication to TBI volume ratio” was derived to estimate the research interest in TBI with respect to the frequency of this pathology.

RESULTS

Between 2008 and 2018 a total of 8144 articles were published and indexed in the PubMed database about TBI. Leading WHO regions in terms of contributions were AMR-US/Can with 4183 articles (51.36%), followed by EUR with 2003 articles (24.60%), WPR with 1507 (18.50%), AMR-L with 141 articles (1.73%), EMR with 135 (1.66%), AFR with 91 articles (1.12%), and SEAR with 84 articles (1.03%). The highest publication to TBI volume ratios were found for AMR-US/Can (90.93) and EUR (21.54), followed by WPR (8.71) and AMR-L (2.43). Almost 90 times lower than the ratio of AMR-US/Can were the ratios for AFR (1.15) and SEAR (0.46).

CONCLUSIONS

An important disparity currently exists between countries with a high burden of TBI and those in which most of the research is conducted. A call for improvement of data collection and research outputs along with an increase in international collaboration could quantitatively and qualitatively improve the ability of LMICs to ameliorate TBI care and develop clinical practice guidelines.

Postgraduate publishing output in pediatric neurosurgery: correlation with fellowship site and individual scholars

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to analyze the publication output of postgraduate pediatric neurosurgery fellows for a 10-year period as well as identify 25 individual highly productive pediatric neurosurgeons. The correlation between academic productivity and the site of fellowship training was studied.

METHODS

Programs certified by the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships that had 5 or more graduating fellows from 2006 to 2015 were included for analysis. Fellows were queried using Scopus for publications during those 10 years with citation data through 2017. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated, comparing program rankings of faculty against fellows using the revised Hirsch index (r-index; primary) and Hirsch index (h-index; secondary). A list of 25 highly accomplished individual academicians and their fellowship training locations was compiled.

RESULTS

Sixteen programs qualified with 152 fellows from 2006 to 2015; 136 of these surgeons published a total of 2009 articles with 23,735 citations. Most publications were pediatric-specific (66.7%) clinical articles (93.1%), with middle authorship (55%). Co-investigators were more likely from residency than fellowship. There was a clustering of the top 7 programs each having total publications of around 120 or greater, publications per fellow greater than 12, more than 1200 citations, and adjusted ir10 (revised 10-year institutional h-index) and ih10 (10-year institutional h-index) values of approximately 2 or higher. Correlating faculty and fellowship program rankings yielded correlation coefficients ranging from 0.53 to 0.80. Fifteen individuals (60%) in the top 25 (by r5 index) list completed their fellowship at 1 of these 7 institutions.

CONCLUSIONS

Approximately 90% of fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons have 1 or more publications, but the spectrum of output is broad. There is a strong correlation between where surgeons complete their fellowships and postgraduate publications.

Top 100 Most-Cited Articles on Pituitary Adenoma: A Bibliometric Analysis

BACKGROUND

Many articles have been published on pituitary adenomas. Bibliometric analyses are helpful for determining the most impactful studies within a field.

OBJECTIVE

To identify the top 100 most-cited articles on pituitary adenomas using the bibliometric analysis method.

METHODS

We searched the Thomson Reuters Web of Science on March 31, 2018. Articles were listed in descending order by the total citation (TC) number, and the most-cited articles on pituitary adenomas were identified and analyzed.

RESULTS

The most-cited articles were published between 1970 and 2014, with 1999 as the most prolific year. Growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenoma was the most commonly studied tumor subtype (43%), and in clinical studies, treatment options and follow-up were the most important research focuses (62%). The average number of TCs was 326, and the average number of annual citations (ACs) was 17. More review articles were published in the last decade, and the average number of ACs was higher for this decade than for previous decades. Twenty-one articles were recognized as citation Ccassics, with a TC number >400. Twenty-five journals published the top 100 works; Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published the most articles (25%). The most articles (43%) were published in the United States. S. Melmed wrote the greatest number of publications (14%). Departments of medicine (32%) and endocrinology (32%) contributed to the largest number of articles.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified the research focuses and trends regarding pituitary adenoma and provides key references for investigators in guiding future pituitary adenoma research.

The top 2,000 cited articles in critical care medicine: a bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

The bibliometric analysis has been performed on several topics in critical care medicine (CCM) focusing on top 100 cited articles, but the analysis on CCM literature as a whole is missing. The present study aimed to perform a complete bibliometric analysis in the field of CCM.

METHODS

An electronic search of the Scopus database was performed on Feb 13, 2018. The search strategy involved core terms related to CCM. The top 2,000 most cited articles in the field of CCM were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistics on these top-cited articles, country distributions, and journals are reported. Individual author's productivity was assessed with the Lotka's law. Co-occurrence of keywords was visualized with the Fruchterman-Reingold layout. The Walktrap algorithm was employed for clustering analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 2,000 documents were included in the analysis with median citations of 386 times [interquartile range (IQR): 308-562 times]. The most cited article was the original paper that described the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score. The included articles were published in 411 journals. The median number of documents published in one journal was 1, and the mean number was 4.9, indicating a skewed distribution. The maximum number of publications was 217 in CCM. Author's productivity profile was significantly different from the Lotka's law (P=0.001), with n and C values of 2.8 and 0.52, respectively. Fruchterman-Reingold network plot showed that studies involving human subject were the most common literature type. Sepsis was a major research topic that co-occurred with keywords such as disease severity, nonhuman, risk assessment and practice guideline.

CONCLUSIONS

The study performed bibliometric analyses of 2,000 top-cited articles in CCM. The most cited article was the one which developed the APACHE II score. Author's productivity was significantly different from the Lotka's law.
