Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy. METHODS The Web of Science Core Collection was employed to systematically retrieve publications related to elbow arthroscopy. Subsequently, the top 50 cited articles meeting the predefined inclusion criteria were meticulously documented and subjected to comprehensive bibliometric analysis. RESULTS The top 50 cited articles spanned the years 1999 to 2017, with the 2010s emerging as the most prolific decade. Citations per article varied from 24 to 211, and citation density ranged from 1.61 to 9.17. The United States dominated in article production and citations. Predominantly, the articles took the form of case series and expert opinions, with a notable absence of level I or II evidence. The keywords with the highest frequencies were "arthrofibrosis," "complications," and "release." These keywords formed five main clusters: stiff elbow, osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, and lateral epicondylitis. CONCLUSIONS The majority of the top 50 cited articles in elbow arthroscopy comprised case series exhibiting Level IV or V evidence. Despite a dynamic development post-2010, elbow arthroscopy articles showed lower mean citations and citation density compared to other joints, potentially influenced by concerns about complications. However, with the increasing prevalence of elbow arthroscopy procedures, it is anticipated that higher-level articles, particularly those focusing on complications and exploring additional indications, will supersede some of the articles included in this analysis. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) consists of low libido, sexual arousal problems, anorgasmia, and dyspareunia. Sexual function is an important aspect of life for many women and is closely correlated with overall well-being. FSD is often underrepresented in the academic space when compared with male sexual disorders, such as erectile dysfunction. As FSD spans many fields (eg, urology, gynecology, psychology), bibliometric analyses are an important resource to highlight landmark articles. OBJECTIVES To identify key articles about FSD by citation number and bibliometric analysis to facilitate future scholarly efforts into more FSD research. METHODS We searched for articles in the Web of Science Core Collection between 1900 and 2023 using terms specific to FSD. We identified relevant FSD articles and selected the top 50 most cited. A bibliometric analysis was performed to collect and analyze data about title, authorship, publication year, citation number, journal and impact factor, country and institution, study type, citation index, specialty, and conflict of interest. RESULTS An overall 6858 results were identified. The top 50 most cited articles were published between 1997 and 2014 in 12 countries, across 32 institutions, and in 20 journals. The United States produced the most articles. The Journal of Sexual Medicine published the most articles. The mean number of citations per article was 351.64. Observational studies were most common. More than half were sponsored. Of all the specialties, most articles were categorized as urology and nephrology. Research about FSD has been much less impactful than research about male sexual dysfunction, possibly owing to stigma and decreased clinical training. CONCLUSION As FSD covers many fields, bibliometric analyses are invaluable to understand the vast body of knowledge. We hope that this research emphasizes the lack of attention that FSD has had and that it provides health care professionals with a valuable tool to understand the trajectory of FSD to guide future education efforts.

Abstract
Background Achilles tendon injuries represent one of the most common reasons for referral to orthopaedic surgeons. Purpose To outline the characteristics, examine trends in publication, and evaluate the correlation between citations and study quality of the 50 most cited articles on Achilles tendon injury. Study Design Cross-sectional study. Methods After searching the Web of Science for articles published in orthopaedic journals, we identified the 50 most cited articles on Achilles tendon injury and abstracted their characteristics. Risk of bias was assessed using the modified Coleman Methodology Score (mCMS). Multiple bivariate analyses (Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient) were used to evaluate the association among number of citations, citation rate (citations/year), 2020 journal impact factor (JIF), year of publication, level of evidence (LoE), study type (tendon rupture or chronic tendinopathy), sample size, and mCMS. Results The top 50 articles were cited 12,194 times. Each article had a mean ± SD 244 ± 88.8 citations (range, 157-657) and a citation rate of 12.6 ± 5.4 per year (range, 3-28). A total of 35 studies (70%) were published between 2000 and 2010. The citation rate of the 16 most recent studies was almost double that of the 16 oldest studies (17.5 vs 9.9; P < .001). Nineteen studies (49%) were classified as having poor quality (mCMS <50 points). The mean JIF of the 9 journals that published the studies was 5.1. The citation rate correlated with the number of citations (r = 0.56; P < .001), publication year (r = 0.60; P < .001), and LoE (r = -0.44; P = .005). The publication year correlated with the LoE (r = -0.40; P = .01). Study quality in terms of mCMS correlated with the JIF (r = 0.35; P = .03) and LoE (r = -0.48; P = .003) but not the citation rate (P = .15). Conclusion The mean LoE and the citation rate of the most cited articles on Achilles tendon injury both significantly increased over time. Although the JIF was positively correlated with study quality, almost half of the studies had poor-quality methodology.

Abstract
Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is an uncommon condition that can lead to permanent neurological deficits if not diagnosed and addressed promptly. Varying prognoses, including retropulsed fracture fragments, disc herniations, and epidural abscesses, can result in CES. Our objective was to identify the top 50 most impactful articles on CES and analyze the characteristics of these publications. In August of 2021, we used the Web of Science Core Collection bibliographic database to query the phrase "cauda equina syndrome." Articles between 1900 and 2021 were included in the search, and these articles were ranked based on the number of citations. The following variables were recorded: title, first author, journal, year of publication, number of citations, country of origin, the institution of publication, and topic of the paper. A total of 2096 articles matched the search criteria. The top 50 most impactful articles ranged from 43 to 439 in their number of citations. All articles on the list were published in English, with the year of publication ranging from 1938 to 2014. The United States accounted for the greatest number of articles published at 27. The medical journal Spine accounted for the greatest number of publications at nine. And the 2000s was the decade with the most cited articles. It is generally acknowledged that the clinical signals for CES are diverse with no predictive value on patient outcomes. Similar uncertainty exists in the etiology of the condition, though CES induced by spinal anesthesia is a factor of particular interest. Additionally, it is generally recognized that delayed diagnosis of the condition often results in permanent neurological deficits. Identification of the most impactful articles on CES is critical in drawing attention to this significant condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While female head and neck surgeons have made significant contributions to the field, women's achievements in scientific communication have traditionally been underreported. METHODS A search of high-impact journals in the field of head and neck surgery was performed in the Elsevier's Scopus database to identify the top 100 most-cited articles. RESULTS The top 100 most-cited articles (during the span of 1953 and 2016) had the highest total number of citations between 2005 and 2009. Women accounted for 36% of first authors and 25% of corresponding authors. Change in the relative number of first female authors in these top 100 articles did not increase significantly between 1950 and 2019. CONCLUSION The proportion of female first authors in head and neck surgery has not significantly increased over the past several decades, despite greater numbers of female trainees. Our findings support the need for additional research on female representation in head and neck surgery.

Abstract
Background Tremendous scientific researches have been conducted in the field of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), while few bibliometric analyses have been performed. We aim to identify 100 top-cited published articles about DKD and analyze their main characteristics quantitatively. Methods Web of Science was searched with the term ‘diabetic kidney disease’ OR ‘diabetic nephropathy’ to identify the top 100 most cited articles. For articles meeting the predefined criteria, the following data were extracted and analyzed: citation ranking, publication year, publication journal, journal impact factor, country and institution, authors, study type, and keywords. Results The highest number of citations was 4753 times. The median average citations per year was 21.8 (IQR, 16.6–33.0). Most articles focused on the pathogenesis and treatment. These articles were published in 25 different journals and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology published the greatest number (20%). Forty-three articles (43%) originated from the United States. The University of Groningen was the leading institute, contributing five top-cited articles. The most frequent first author was de Zeeuw (n = 4), followed by Parving (n = 3). There was no correlation between the average citations and the number of authors, the number of institutes, or the number of funds, respectively. Experimental animal study was the research type most frequently conducted (n = 30), followed by observational study (n = 24). Keyword analysis revealed transforming growth factor-β, oxidative stress, proteinuria, and renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system interruption are classic research topics. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists, and anti-inflammatory agents are the emerging trends of DKD. Conclusions This bibliometric analysis helps in identifying the milestones, inadequacies, classic hotspots, and emerging trends of DKD. Pathogenesis and treatment are core themes in DKD research, while high-quality articles on the prediction and biomarker are insufficient. New analyzing metrics are needed to assess the actual impact of these top-cited articles on clinical practice.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN A bibliometric review of the literature. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited publications in the field of endoscopic spine surgery (ESS). METHODS In order to determine the top cited 100 articles, a 3-step approach was employed. First, the 100 most-cited ESS studies were identified using the key phrase "endoscopic spine surgery." Then, 8 keywords were identified from the 100 studies of step 1 were used to conduct a second round searching in all databases of the Web of Science. Finally, when the results of the first and second steps were overlapped, duplicated studies were removed. The 100 top-cited articles were used for further analysis. RESULTS The citation number of the top 100 most-cited articles ranged from 44 to 236 with a mean value of 84.4. The most productive periods were from 2001 to 2010. The majority of publications came from Spine and Neurosurgery, where Spine holds the largest number of 35 articles, followed by Neurosurgery with 13 articles. Overall, 10 countries contributed to the 100 articles, with the most productive country being the United States, followed by Germany and Korea. CONCLUSION This bibliometric study is meant to produce a list of intellectual milestones in the field of ESS. This article's identification of the most influential articles in the field of ESS gives us a unique and comprehensive insight into the development of ESS in the past several decades.

Abstract
This bibliometric review aimed to identify and analyze the top 100 most-cited publications on the systemic manifestations of periodontal disease (PD). A literature search was performed using the Web of Science (WoS) 'All Databases', without any restriction of language, publication year, or study design. Of 4418 articles, the top 100 were included based on their citation count. After downloading the full texts, their bibliometric information was extracted and analyzed. The citation counts for the top 100 articles ranged from 156 to 4191 (median 217). The most productive years were 2003 and 2005, with 20 articles on the list. Majority of the articles were published in the Journal of Periodontology (n = 25). The top 100 articles were generated primarily from the USA (n = 61). Most of the publications were clinical trials (n = 27) and focused on the cardiovascular manifestations of PD (n = 31). Most of the articles were within the evidence level V (n = 41). A total of 58 studies received funding and the most frequently used keyword in the top articles was "periodontal disease" (n = 39). The current citation analysis presents insights into the current trends in the systemic manifestations of periodontal disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A bibliometric analysis of articles in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine (JUM) identified the journals' most impactful articles. METHODS A bibliometric analysis of citation classics that were published in the JUM from its inception in 1982 to 2019 was performed. All citation classics, defined as articles cited 100 or more times, were evaluated for the number of citations, citations per year, publication year, subspecialty, design, and country of origin. Characteristics were compared before and after 1998 by the Mann-Whitney test for unpaired data and 2-sample z tests of sample proportions. The Kruskal-Wallis test for nonparametric continuous data was used to compare the median number of citations per year by decade of publication. RESULTS A total of 7868 articles were published in the JUM between 1982 and 2019; 54 (0.7%) were citation classics. The median citation classics year of publication was 1998 (interquartile range [IQR], 1991-2003). Most citation classics originated from the United States (36 of 54 [66.7%]), were observational (47 of 54 [87%]), and were related to obstetric and gynecologic topics (16 of 54 [29.6%]). Citation classics after 1998 received significantly more citations per year (9.3 versus 4.7; P < .001), with no other differences noted. The median number of citations per year increased for each decade, with medians of 4 citations (IQR, 3.6-4.7) in 1982 to 1991 and 11.2 citations (IQR, 9-13.9) in 2002 to 2012 (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS This list provides insight into the most influential articles that were published in the JUM. Most citation classics were observational, were from the United States, and covered obstetric and gynecologic topics. Citation classics received more citations per year after 1998.

Abstract
Objective and method: Betel (areca) nut has recently received interest from researchers and policy makers for its role as a psychoactive substance. It was historically limited to Asia-pacific region, but with the advent of globalization, it has become an equally challenging public health problem across the globe. Previously published literature can give us valuable insights in terms of historical interest and understanding related to betel nut. With the expansion of biomedical research a huge number of articles have been published on the same. In terms of understanding the impact of an article, citations are considered a proxy estimate measure. Thus we decided to analyze the top 100 cited articles (till November 2018) related to betel nut. The search in Google scholar database was done with the help of freely available software, Publish or Perish. Results: Overall we found that most articles were published from the fields of dentistry and oncology, with relatively minimal contribution from the field of Addiction Psychiatry. Hence, most articles have addressed the issue of epidemiology and mechanism with lesser share of treatment related publications. Various important information related to these articles have been discussed including the institutions, countries, journals and impactful authors in the field. Subsequently, original research articles are further classified into descriptive/epidemiology, mechanism, management, scale/measurement, imaging and medical psychiatry. Importance: This citation analysis provides valuable information with regards to the emphasis of researchers in the field, and areas where more emphasis is required from contemporary world.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Journal has had a profound influence in nearly 150 years of publishing. A bibliometric analysis, which uses citation analyses to evaluate the impact of articles, can be used to identify the most impactful papers in the Journal's history. OBJECTIVE The objective was to identify and characterize the top-cited articles published in the Journal since 1920. STUDY DESIGN We used the Web of Science and Scopus databases to identify the most frequently cited articles of the Journal from 1920 through 2018. The top 100 articles from each database were included in our analysis. Articles were evaluated for several characteristics including year of publication, article type, topic, open access, and country of origin. Using the Scopus data, we performed an unadjusted categorical analysis to characterize the articles and a 2 time point analysis to compare articles before and after 1995, the median year of publication from each database list. RESULTS The top 100 articles from each database were included in the analysis. This included 120 total articles: 80 articles listed in both and 20 unique in each database. More than half (52%) were observational studies, 9% were RCTs, and 75% were from US authors. When the post-1995 studies were compared with the articles published before 1995, articles were more frequently cited (median 27 vs 13 citations per year, P < .001), more likely to be randomized (14.0% vs 4.8%, P = .009), and more likely to originate from international authors (33.3% vs 17.5%, P = .045). CONCLUSION Slightly more than half of the top-cited papers in the Journal since 1920 were observational studies and three quarters of all papers were from US authors. Compared with top-cited papers before 1995, the Journal's top-cited papers after 1995 were more likely to be randomized and to originate from international authors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bibliometric analysis has been performed on several topics in critical care medicine (CCM) focusing on top 100 cited articles, but the analysis on CCM literature as a whole is missing. The present study aimed to perform a complete bibliometric analysis in the field of CCM. METHODS An electronic search of the Scopus database was performed on Feb 13, 2018. The search strategy involved core terms related to CCM. The top 2,000 most cited articles in the field of CCM were included in the analysis. Descriptive statistics on these top-cited articles, country distributions, and journals are reported. Individual author's productivity was assessed with the Lotka's law. Co-occurrence of keywords was visualized with the Fruchterman-Reingold layout. The Walktrap algorithm was employed for clustering analysis. RESULTS A total of 2,000 documents were included in the analysis with median citations of 386 times [interquartile range (IQR): 308-562 times]. The most cited article was the original paper that described the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score. The included articles were published in 411 journals. The median number of documents published in one journal was 1, and the mean number was 4.9, indicating a skewed distribution. The maximum number of publications was 217 in CCM. Author's productivity profile was significantly different from the Lotka's law (P=0.001), with n and C values of 2.8 and 0.52, respectively. Fruchterman-Reingold network plot showed that studies involving human subject were the most common literature type. Sepsis was a major research topic that co-occurred with keywords such as disease severity, nonhuman, risk assessment and practice guideline. CONCLUSIONS The study performed bibliometric analyses of 2,000 top-cited articles in CCM. The most cited article was the one which developed the APACHE II score. Author's productivity was significantly different from the Lotka's law.

Abstract
Background Chordomas are rare malignant primary tumors of the spine. In the mobile spine and sacrum an en-bloc resection is associated with decreased rates of recurrence. Our objective was to identify the top cited articles in chordoma research and to further analyze characteristics of these articles. Methods In March 2017, we used ISI Web of Science (v5.11, Thomas Reuter, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) to search for the following key word: "chordoma". Articles were searched from 1900 to 2017. Articles were ranked based on number of citations. The results were evaluated to determine articles most clinically relevant to the management of chordomas. The top 50 articles that met the search criteria were further characterized on the basis of: title, author, citation density, journal of publication, year (and decade) of publication, institution and country of origin and paper topic. Results A total of 1,043 articles matched the search criteria. The most influential 50 articles were cited 65 to 290 times. The articles were published between 1926 and 2012, and all articles were published in English. Thirty-three publications (66%) originated from the United States and seven (14%) from Italy. Cancer accounted for the most frequent (n=9) destination journal followed by Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (n=4). A total of 41 institutions contributed to the top 50 articles. The most common article types were: clinical 44% (n=22), papers that combined clinical and pathology findings 18% (n=9) and basic science research 14% (n=7). Conclusions The top 50 cited articles on chordomas are predominantly clinical papers, arising from the United States and most frequently published in Cancer and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
