Abstract
Physician-Patient communication (PPC) has been linked to patient adjustment outcomes. However, conflicting results have been reported and previous systematic reviews showed some methodological weaknesses. It has also been suggested that PPC is related to physicians' own adjustment outcomes. This systematic review aims to explore and synthesize the associations between PPC and both patient and physician adjustment outcomes. A systematic search was conducted primarily in five databases and 11.488 non-duplicated articles were identified. Forty-five studies met the eligibility criteria and data extraction was performed for sample characteristics, PPC measurement, adjustment outcomes under examination and main outcomes. The observed results showed that the majority of the included studies were cross-sectional, assessed PPC by proxy-report and reported an overall positive association with patients' adjustment outcomes. None of the studies examined the association between PPC and physicians' adjustment outcomes. Thirty-three studies were meta-analyzed and showed a positive and significant association between PPC and patients' adjustment outcomes (r = .16). Due to the small number of studies included in the meta-analysis, the heterogeneity was high. Subgroup analysis could not identify sources for heterogeneity. Research on the associations between PPC and physicians' own adjustment outcomes is warranted. Future studies should be rigorous in defining clear PPC definitions, directionality of communication processes, and study design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is common in patients with advanced gynecologic and gastrointestinal cancers. Frequently, patients with PC undergo palliative surgery or procedures to manage disease-related complications and side effects. However, there are limited data regarding patients' and family caregivers' decision-making processes about these procedures. Thus, we sought to describe the decision-making experiences of patients with PC who elect to pursue palliative surgical procedures and their family caregivers. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected during a pilot randomized controlled trial of BOLSTER, a nurse-led telehealth intervention for patients with PC and their caregivers after an acute hospitalization and palliative procedure. Participants in both study arms described their experiences in semi-structured interviews. We re-analyzed coded qualitative data with a focus on understanding decision-making experiences surrounding palliative surgery and procedures using conventional content analysis. RESULTS Interviews from 32 participants, 23 patients and 9 caregivers, were analyzed. Participants reported their decision-making was complicated by illness uncertainty and a desire for clear, effective communication with surgical and medical oncology teams. Participants requested more information about the impact of palliative procedures on their daily life. Several also noted that, without improved understanding, a misalignment between patient and family caregiver goals and palliative procedures may inadvertently increase suffering. CONCLUSION Discussions related to patients' goals and preferences can improve the quality of treatment decision-making in patients with PC and their caregivers. Future research should test interventions to improve advanced cancer patients' illness understanding and decision-making surrounding palliative surgery and procedures.

Abstract
Background Cervical Cancer stands as the second leading cause of both incident female cancers and deaths in Burkina Faso. Unfortunately, the prevention, early detection, and care of cervical cancers are suboptimal at individual, institutional, and national levels. In October 2023, we organized a stakeholder's workshop to develop cervical cancer awareness messaging for disease control in the country. Methods A one-text workshop was organized with stakeholders working toward improving health in general or women's health and well-being. A participatory, learning, and adaptive approach was used to facilitate discussions and activities, ensuring the contribution of all participants. Contextual evidence-based and empirical elements about cervical cancer burden and preventive strategies were presented to the participants by key informants. These served as the foundation for a collaborative formulation of messaging content that aimed at raising awareness about cervical cancer. Results Sixty-two participants from 28 organizations attended the workshop. They work mainly at local and international non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, universities, university hospitals, research centers, and the Ministry of Health. During the first and second days of the workshop, the participants explored cervical cancer data, its preventive and treatment options available in Burkina Faso, communication strategies for behavioral change, and determinants of the use of prevention and health promotion services. During the following three days, 3 working groups were formed to define strategies, and key messages adapted to diverse tools and targeted audiences. All information was validated during plenary sessions before the end of the workshop and available to all participants and their organizations for cancer awareness activities. Conclusion Upon conclusion of the workshop, the participants provided insightful information for the development of cervical awareness messaging in Burkina Faso. They formed the first community of practice to serve as a dynamic platform for implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and continued learning activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active participation of cancer patients and their caregivers in decision-making, along with high-quality communication, is crucial in patient-centered cancer management. Although numerous factors affecting patients' communication and decision-making involvement have been identified, it is still unclear which ones are the most prevalent and critical. OBJECTIVE To identify factors that contribute to high-quality patient-centered communication and decision-making participation from the perspectives of cancer patients, informal caregivers, and/or healthcare professionals. METHODS A systematic review was conducted, using 9 databases to retrieve primary research articles published from 2010 to February 17, 2023, updated on December 13, 2023. Methodological quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (version 18). The socioecological model of communication was utilized as analytical framework for summarizing the results. RESULTS Fifty-two studies were included. The most frequently reported factors were predominantly articulated at the individual, interpersonal, and societal levels. Although the patients' lack of knowledge and limited language proficiency were the frequent patient-level barriers, the perceived lack of knowledge and lack of training of professionals were the crucial and current professional-level barriers, as reported in studies published in 2016 onward. To circumvent these factors, it is critical to enhance professionals' knowledge, communication skills, and patient relationships. CONCLUSIONS Recognizing barriers and facilitators could help in the development of strategies to overcome these barriers and enhance patient participation in clinical communication. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE The findings could guide the development of programs to enhance patient-professional communication skills. Further cross-cultural studies are needed to understand culture's impact on communication effectiveness and decision-making participation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding cancer patients' unmet needs for chemotherapy-related symptom management will assist clinicians in developing tailored intervention programs. Little is known about the association between perceived communication efficacy and unmet care needs for symptom management in patients with lung and colorectal cancer. OBJECTIVES To examine the unmet care needs for symptom management of patients with lung and colorectal cancer and their association with perceived communication efficacy. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a tertiary hospital in China from July to November 2020. A convenience sample of 203 patients with lung and colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy completed survey questionnaires, including the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Scale and the Perceived Efficacy in Patient‒Physician Interactions Scale. RESULTS Approximately 43% of participants had at least one symptom with unmet needs. Fatigue was reported as the symptom with the highest occurrence (66%), the highest demand for supportive care (36%), and the highest prevalence of unmet needs (19%). Low levels of perceived communication efficacy independently predicted participants' unmet needs for symptom management (β=-0.13, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the necessity of introducing clinical assessment tools and guidelines to address fatigue and other chemotherapy-induced symptoms in patients with lung and colorectal cancer. Clinical programs designed to actively engage cancer patients to voice their needs and strengthen their communication efficacy are also warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Patient-centered communication (PCC) occurs when clinicians respond to patients' needs, preferences, and concerns. While PCC is associated with better health-related quality of life in patients with cancer, patients with ovarian cancer have reported unmet communication needs. We used design thinking to develop an intervention to promote PCC in ovarian cancer care. METHODS Following the steps of design thinking, we empathized with stakeholders by reviewing the literature, then created stakeholder and journey maps to define the design challenge. To ideate solutions, we developed a challenge map. Finally, we developed wireframe prototypes and tested them with stakeholders. RESULTS Empathizing revealed that misaligned visit priorities precipitated suboptimal communication. Defining the design challenge and ideating solutions highlighted the need to normalize preference assessments, promote communication self-efficacy, and enhance visit efficiency. The Collaborative Agenda-Setting Intervention (CASI) elicits patients' needs and preferences and delivers communication guidance at the point of care. Stakeholders approved of the prototype. CONCLUSION Design thinking provided a systematic approach to empathizing with stakeholders, identifying challenges, and innovating solutions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS To our knowledge, the CASI is the first intervention to set the visit agenda and support communication from within the electronic health record. Future research will assess its usability and acceptability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the role of self-efficacy as a mediator of the association between patient-centred communication (PCC) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a sample of participants with ovarian cancer. METHODS English-speaking adults with ovarian cancer completed a cross-sectional survey. We assessed self-efficacy with the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease scale, PCC with the Patient-Centred Communication in Cancer Care-36, and HRQoL with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General. We used the PROCESS macro to calculate regression coefficients for the total effect of PCC on HRQoL and direct effect of PCC on HRQoL. We calculated a 95% CI for the indirect effect of PCC on HRQoL using 10 000 bootstrapped samples. RESULTS The total effect of PCC on HRQoL (9.47, 95% CI 6.21 to 12.74) was greater than the direct effect of PCC on HRQoL (3.47, 95% CI 0.73 to 6.21). The indirect effect of PCC on HRQoL was 6.00 (95% CI 3.56 to 8.95). Self-efficacy explained approximately 63.4% of the association between PCC and HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS Self-efficacy partially mediated the association between PCC and HRQoL. Self-efficacy is a potential target for communication interventions that aim to improve HRQoL. Research to validate this finding in the setting of a randomised trial is warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patient-centered communication is a type of communication that takes place between the provider and the patient. OBJECTIVES It is aimed to reveal the effects of patient-centered communication on patient engagement, health-related quality of life, perception of service quality and patient satisfaction. METHOD The study was conducted by applying multiple regression analysis to the data obtained from 312 patients with cancer treated in a training and research hospital affiliated to the Ministry of Health in Diyarbakır, Türkiye. RESULTS More than half of the patients were female and had stage 4 cancer. Different types of cancer were detected (breast cancer, cancer of the digestive organs, lymphatic and hematopoietic cancer, cancer of the genital organs, cancer of the respiratory organs, etc.). It can be stated that the average values obtained by patients from patient-centered communication and its sub-dimensions are high. There are positive, moderate and low and significant relationships between the overall patient-centered communication and patient engagement, patient satisfaction, service quality perception and quality of life. It was statistically revealed that patient-centered communication positively affected patient engagement, health-related quality of life, service quality perception, and patient satisfaction. CONCLUSION Patient-centered communication positively affects various short and medium-term health outcomes and this study offers suggestions for improving patient-provider communication.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological cancers, with low survival rates and a high disease burden. Despite the known benefits, most women reduce their participation in physical activity following diagnosis. Little is known about ovarian cancer survivors' experiences of physical activity. The primary aim of this study was to explore the barriers and enablers to participation in physical activity among women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. METHODS A qualitative descriptive study design was conducted via semi-structured interviews with nine women diagnosed with ovarian cancer (stages I-IV; 40-77 years). The interviews took place at the participant's home via telephone or online video conferencing software Coviu©. An inductive thematic approach was used. The organization and coding of data were completed using NVivo computer software (Version 12.6.0, QSR International Pty Ltd.). Weekly discussions occurred among the research team to ensure that themes accurately represented participant views. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies (COREQ) 32-item checklist were followed. RESULTS The main barriers to physical activity participation that emerged were (i) the lack of referral to an exercise professional within the multidisciplinary cancer team, (ii) fear of injury after surgery and during treatment, and (iii) treatment-related side effects. However, many of the participants perceived benefits of physical activity related to (i) enhanced physical and psychological health, (ii) improved cancer outcomes, and (iii) social benefits as key enablers of physical activity participation. CONCLUSIONS Physical activity interventions for women with ovarian cancer should address the modifiable barriers identified in this study. A key focus should be to streamline timely referral pathways within the multidisciplinary team, including exercise professionals, dietitians, psychologists, and specialists nurses following a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Further research and service development are needed to optimize supported self-management through (i) education about the importance of physical activity to both healthcare professionals and women alike, (ii) enhanced symptom management for women, which was identified as a barrier to participation, and (iii) the development of shared care plans and patient center goals to address any fears or concerns. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS People diagnosed with ovarian cancer have low participation levels of physical activity. Cancer care professionals' support could increase physical activity uptake and reduce some of the burden of an ovarian cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
The existing literature on the direct association between patient-centered communication (PCC) and emotional well-being often demonstrates inconsistent results. To explain such inconsistency, it is important to explore the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship. Built upon the communication pathways model, this study empirically analyzed the Health Information National Trends Survey 5 Cycle 3 dataset (N = 4,709) and tested a moderated mediation model that links PCC to emotional health via information-seeking self-efficacy, with an additional assessment of the moderating effects of information-seeking frustration and social media use. The findings showed that PCC was positively related to emotional health. Also, PCC was indirectly associated with emotional health through information-seeking self-efficacy. In addition, information-seeking frustration and social media use weakened the association between PCC and information-seeking self-efficacy. Furthermore, the indirect path from PCC to emotional health through information-seeking self-efficacy was conditional on both information-seeking frustration and social media use. Important theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a single-arm pilot study, we assessed the feasibility and usefulness of an innovative patient-centered communication tool (UR-GOAL tool) that addresses aging-related vulnerabilities, patient values, and prognostic awareness for use in treatment decision making between older adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), their caregivers, and oncologists. METHODS Primary feasibility metric was retention rate; >50% was considered feasible. We collected recruitment rate, usefulness, and outcomes including AML knowledge (range 0-14) and perceived efficacy in communicating with oncologists (range 5-25). Due to the pilot nature and small sample size, hypothesis testing was performed at α = 0.10. RESULTS We included 15 patients (mean age 76 years, range 64-88), 12 caregivers, and 5 oncologists; enrollment and retention rates for patients were 84% and 73%, respectively. Patients agreed that the UR-GOAL tool helped them understand their AML diagnosis and treatment options, communicate with their oncologist, and make more informed decisions. From baseline to post-intervention, patients and caregivers scored numerically higher on AML knowledge (patients: +0.6, p = 0.22; caregivers: +1.1, p = 0.05) and perceived greater efficacy in communicating with their oncologists (patients: +1.5, p = 0.22; caregivers: +1.2, p = 0.06). CONCLUSION We demonstrated that it is feasible to incorporate the UR-GOAL tool into treatment decision making for older patients with AML, their caregivers, and oncologists.

Abstract
Maximizing vaccine uptake is critical for the optimal implementation of COVID-19 immunization programs. Indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) have been associated with variations in COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the United States. The present study investigates COVID-19 vaccination behavior in individuals with history of COVID-19 infection, with the specific goal of understanding whether experiences during illness explain socioeconomic disproportionalities in vaccine uptake. We leveraged a large sample of adults (n = 1584) infected with COVID-19 in NYC to examine this question, investigating whether specific experiences during illness explained the association between socioeconomic status and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Data from this study were collected during February and March 2021. Principal component analysis was used to create three composite variables that measure distinct COVID-19 related experiences: infection-related health impacts, pandemic-related psychosocial disruption, and perceived quality of medical care during COVID-19 illness. Neither infection-related impacts nor psychosocial disruption were related to vaccine hesitancy after adjusting for related sociodemographic covariates. However, perceptions of higher quality care received during COVID-19 illness predicted decreased COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Furthermore, mediation analysis revealed that perceived care quality during COVID-19 illness mediate the relationship between objective socioeconomic risk and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. These findings highlight patient-reported care quality during illness as a novel target that may increase vaccine uptake among socioeconomically vulnerable populations.

Abstract
Patient-centered communication (PCC) quality is critical to increasing the quality of patient-centered care. Based on the nationally representative data of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) 2019–2020 (N = 4593), this study combined four machine learning methods, namely, Generalized Linear Models (GLM), Random Forests (Random Forests), Deep Neural Networks (Deep Learning), and Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM), to identify important PCC predictors through variable importance metrics. Fifteen variables were identified as important predictors, involving multiple dimensions, such as individual sociodemographic characteristics, health-related factors, and individual living habits. Among them, four novel potential associated variables are included, an individual’s level of verbal expression, exercise habits, etc., which significantly impacted respondents’ perceived PCC quality. This study revealed the value of combining feature selection with machine learning approaches to identify broad variables that could enhance PCC prediction and clinical decision-making, influence future PCC prediction research, and improve patient-centered care. In the future, other easy-to-interpret models can be combined to conduct further research on the impact direction and mechanism of important predictors on PCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Greater perceived patient-centered communication (PCC) is associated with better health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ovarian cancer. Quantitative measures of PCC and HRQoL do little to explain this association. We interviewed patients with high and low ratings of PCC to understand how it is associated with HRQoL. METHODS Explanatory sequential mixed methods study. Participants were English-speaking U.S. adults with ovarian cancer. We assessed PCC with the Patient-Centered Communication - Cancer (PCC-Ca)-36 (possible score range 1-5; higher scores represent greater patient-centeredness), and purposively sampled 14 participants with total scores in the top and bottom quartiles. Participants completed individual, semi-structured interviews about their communication experiences. Guided by the National Cancer Institute Framework for PCC in Cancer Care, we analyzed interview transcripts using directed content analysis. We integrated survey and interview findings in a joint display. RESULTS Among 176 survey respondents, PCC-Ca-36 total scores ranged from 1.7 to 5.0. Participants with scores in the top quartile (4.8-5.0) perceived clinicians as proactive and attentive to psychosocial concerns. Those with scores in the bottom quartile (1.7-3.5) described not feeling known as an individual and receiving limited support for self-management. CONCLUSIONS The association between PCC and QoL may be partially explained by differences in perceived support for psychosocial concerns and self-management. PCC may facilitate receipt of proactive, personalized care.

Abstract
PURPOSE The elevated physical symptom burden in advanced lung cancer can disrupt patients' emotional well-being, and current literature suggests that physicians' good communication skills might be a buffer. However, little is known about for which group of patients this buffering effect is most effective. Based on a cross-sectional study in patients with advanced lung cancer, the present study examined whether the moderating effect of physicians' communication skills on the association between physical symptoms and emotional distress would further depend on patients' perceived disease understanding. METHODS Patients with advanced lung cancer (n = 199) completed a questionnaire including measures of physical symptoms related to lung cancer, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, perceptions of physicians' communication skills, and self-reported understanding of their disease. RESULTS Hierarchical regression analyses indicated a significant three-way interaction among physical symptoms, perceptions of physicians' communication skills, and perceived disease understanding on both anxiety and depression. Specifically, physicians' good communication skills exerted a buffering effect only for patients with lower levels of disease understanding. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that improving physicians' communication skills may be especially beneficial for reducing the maladaptive emotional reactions to symptom burden for patients with limited disease understanding. When time and resources for communication are restricted, enhanced awareness and focused training may be directed at communicating with patients who possess limited knowledge about their disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients undergoing cancer treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic have experienced stress and uncertainty with respect to disruptions in cancer care and COVID-19 related risks. We examined whether clinicians' responsiveness to patients' uncertainty and difficult emotions were associated with better health and well-being. METHODS Patients were recruited from cancer support communities and a market research firm. Respondents assessed clinicians communication that addressed uncertainty and difficult emotions. Health status measures included mental and physical health, coping during the pandemic, and psychological distress. RESULTS 317 respondents participated in the study. Patients' perceptions of their clinicians responsiveness to patient uncertainty and negative emotions were associated with better mental health, physical health, coping, and less psychological distress (all p-values <0.001). Respondents with greater self-efficacy and social support also reported better health. CONCLUSION Even when controlling for patients' personal and health-related characteristics, clinicians' communication addressing patients' uncertainty and difficult emotions predicted better health, better coping, and less psychological distress. Access to social support and self-efficacy also were associated with better health status. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Clinicians' communication focused on helping with uncertainty and difficult emotions is important to cancer patients, especially during the pandemic. Clinicians should also direct patients to resources for social support and patient empowerment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review and synthesize the patient-clinician communication experiences of individuals with ovarian cancer. METHODS The CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases were reviewed for articles that described (a) original qualitative or mixed methods research, (b) the experiences of individuals with ovarian cancer, and (c) findings related to patient-clinician communication. Relevant data were extracted from study results sections, then coded for descriptive and analytical themes in accordance with Thomas and Harden's approach to thematic synthesis. Data were coded by two authors and discrepancies were resolved through discussion. RESULTS Of 1,390 unique articles, 65 met criteria for inclusion. Four descriptive themes captured participants' experiences communicating with clinicians: respecting me, seeing me, supporting me, and advocating for myself. Findings were synthesized into three analytical themes: communication is analogous to caring, communication is essential to personalized care, and communication may mitigate or exacerbate the burden of illness. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Patient-clinician communication is a process by which individuals with ovarian cancer may engage in self-advocacy and appraise the extent to which they are seen, respected, and supported by clinicians. Strategies to enhance patient-clinician communication in the ovarian cancer care setting may promote patient perceptions of patient-centered care.
