The development of responses to naturally occurring odours in spiny mice Acomys cahirinus

Model systems for regeneration: the spiny mouse, Acomys cahirinus

The spiny mouse, Acomys spp., is a recently described model organism for regeneration studies. For a mammal, it displays surprising powers of regeneration because it does not fibrose (i.e. scar) in response to tissue injury as most other mammals, including humans, do. In this Primer article, we review these regenerative abilities, highlighting the phylogenetic position of the spiny mouse relative to other rodents. We also briefly describe the Acomys tissues that have been used for regeneration studies and the common features of their regeneration compared with the typical mammalian response. Finally, we discuss the contribution that Acomys has made in understanding the general principles of regeneration and elaborate hypotheses as to why this mammal is successful at regenerating.

The ontogeny of kin-recognition mechanisms in Belding's ground squirrels

Despite extensive research on the functions and mechanisms of kin recognition, little is known about developmental changes in the abilities mediating such recognition. Belding's ground squirrels, Urocitellus beldingi, use at least two mechanisms of kin recognition in nepotistic contexts: familiarity and phenotype matching. Because recognition templates develop from early associations with familiar kin (and/or with self), familiarity-based recognition should precede phenotype-matching recognition even though one template is thought to be used for both mechanisms. I used a cross-fostering design to produce individuals that differed in relatedness and familiarity. Two pups (one female and one male) were exchanged reciprocally between two litters within 48-h of birth. Every five days, from 15 to 30-d of age, young were exposed to bedding and oral-gland odors from their familiar foster mother and an unfamiliar unrelated female (familiarity test) and from their unfamiliar genetic mother and another unfamiliar unrelated female (phenotype-matching test). As expected, discrimination of odors based on familiarity was evident at all ages tested, whereas discrimination based on relatedness was not evident until 30-d. My results provide a first estimate for when phenotype-matching mechanisms are used by young Belding's ground squirrels, and thus when they can recognize unfamiliar kin such as older sisters or grandmothers. Belding's ground squirrels are the first species for which the development of the production, perception and action components is well understood.

Diet Shift and Its Impact on Foraging Behavior of Siberian Crane (Grus Leucogeranus) in Poyang Lake

The study of habitat selection and diet has a long history in ecology. This is often used to assess the functional roles of wetland in biodiversity conservation. Shifting habitat and diet may be one of the survival strategies during extremely adverse conditions. Therefore, sudden changes in habitat selection may indicate the deterioration of the habitat quality, and management interventions are necessary. Siberian crane (Grus leucogeranus) became critically endangered due to loss of habitat, and is currently a global conservation focus. Every winter, more than 95% of the species' global population congregates at Poyang Lake, and feeds on tubers of Vallisneria spiralis in shallow water and mudflat habitat. In this study, we reported the first sighting of large numbers of Siberian cranes foraging at wet meadows, where they fed on a different plant, Potentilla limprichtii due to extreme scarcity of their preferred tuber. To understand how well the cranes adapted to such unusual habitat, field surveys to assess the distribution of cranes across different habitats, and food availability in each habitat were carried out in the winter of 2011. Field observations on crane behaviors at different habitats were also conducted. Results show that cranes displayed significantly different behavior patterns when using the wet meadow, compared to the crane's optimal habitat - shallow water and mudflat. Both juveniles and adults spent significantly less time foraging, and more time alerting in meadows than in shallow waters and mudflats. These results indicated that the meadow might be a suboptimal wintering ground for Siberian crane, which helped the cranes survive from extreme unfavorable conditions. To some degree, this finding alleviates the general concern over the fluctuating of its food resources which was caused by hydrological disturbances. However, more studies are needed to assess the consequences of such diet and habitat shift for crane survival.

Modification of Odor Investigation and Discrimination in Female Opossums (Monodelphis domestica) Following the Ablation of the Accessory Olfactory Bulbs

To determine whether the vomeronasal system of the Brazilian short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is important to the response to conspecific chemical signals, the authors tested female opossums with conspecific odors, before and after ablation of their accessory olfactory bulbs (AOBs). Anesthesia and sham treatments did not modify females' discrimination of conspecific odors when tested against water, between male and female odors, or between different odors from the same male donors. Odor investigation was partially diminished following partial ablation of the AOB, and complete ablation of the AOBs further impaired the ability of females to discriminate between certain odors. These findings provide the first evidence for the importance of the vomeronasal system in the detection of chemosignals of known origin in opossums.

Prenatal neurogenesis in the telencephalon of the precocial mouse Acomys cahirinus

[3H]thymidine autoradiography was employed to examine the times of formation of the major neuronal classes in the forebrain of the precocial mouse Acomys cahirinus. Dams received 3 thymidine injections over a 24 h period on either embryonic Day 14, 18, 20, 22, 29 or 36. Age-related changes in the distribution and number of heavily labeled cells were noted. Acomys exhibited later onset and more protracted periods of cell generation than the phylogenetically related, altricial laboratory rat or mouse, indicating considerable differences in patterns of early growth between the species. Understanding the factors responsible for these differences could lend important insights into evolutionary mechanisms involved in the process of speciation.

The development of olfactory preferences for artificial odors briefly experienced by the precocial spiny mouse young

Groups of pups, aged 2, 4, 6, 12, 16, and 18 days of the precocial murid rodent spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus), were each exposed for 1.5 h to one of the experimental odors, cinnamon or cumin, present in the surrounding environment. The odors were not contingent upon home-cage odors or any other reinforcers. This simple exposure produced a strong preference for the exposed odor in multichoice preference tests carried out 48 h after the exposure in pups from groups aged 2 through 16 days. Older pups exposed to cinnamon or cumin at Day 18 did not show a significant preference for the familiar odor. Both experimental odors used were found to be neutral for control experimentally naive pups within a tested age span. These results point at a stimulus familiarity, rather than associative learning in the development of olfactory preferences in young spiny mouse pups.

Development of sex differences in the response of spiny mouse pups to adult male odors

Using a three-choice preference test, olfactory-mediated investigatory activity in response to adult male urine odor was examined in a precocially active rodent, the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) aged between 3-26 days. Temporally related sex differences were seen in the time spent in the presence of the odors of father's or unfamiliar adult male's urine, or distilled (control) water. Neither male nor female pups discriminated between odors from the father and strange adult males. After the first olfactory test, when the pups were aged between four and six days, male pups strongly preferred to stay in the vicinity of urine odors of adult males, whereas female pups avoided odors of adult males and remained in the enclosure with the control odor source. To our knowledge this is the first time that such a behavioral sex difference related to olfaction has been shown to occur in young rodent pups. We suggest that the sexually dimorphic response of the pups is associated with the development of later sex differences in behavior.
