Abstract
In applications ranging from photon-energy conversion into electrical or chemical forms (such as photovoltaics or photocatalysis) to numerous sensor technologies based on organic solids, the role of supramolecular structures and chromophore interactions is crucial. This review comprehensively examines the critical intermolecular interactions between organic dyes and their impact on optical properties. We explore the range of changes in absorption or emission properties observed in molecular aggregates compared to single molecules. Each effect is dissected to reveal its physicochemical foundations, relevance to different application domains, and documented examples from the literature that illustrate the potential modulation of absorption or emission properties by molecular and supramolecular structural adjustments. This work aims to serve as a concise guide for exploiting supramolecular phenomena in the innovation of novel optical and optoelectronic organic materials, with emphasis on strategic application and exploitation.

Abstract
We describe a new type of nitrogen-centered polycyclic scaffold comprising a unique combination of 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings. The compound is accessible through an intramolecular oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of tri(1-naphthyl)amine. To the best of our knowledge this is the very first example of a direct 3-fold cyclization of a triarylamine under oxidative conditions. The unusual ring fusion motif is confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the impact of cyclization on the electronic and photophysical properties is investigated both experimentally and theoretically based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The formation of the unexpected product is rationalized by detailed mechanistic studies on the DFT level. The results suggest the cyclization to occur under kinetic control via a dicationic mechanism.

Abstract
The design of new molecules for photochemical studies typically requires knowledge of spectral features of pertinent chromophores beginning with the absorption spectrum (λabs ) and accompanying molar absorption coefficient (ε, m-1 cm-1 ) and often extending to the fluorescence spectrum (λem ) and fluorescence quantum yield (Φf ), where the fluorescence properties may be of direct relevance or useful as proxies to gain insight into the nature of the first excited singlet state. PhotochemCAD databases, developed over a period of 30 years, are described here. The previous databases for 150 compounds have been expanded to encompass 339 compounds for which absorption spectra (including ε values), fluorescence spectra (including Φf values) and references to the primary literature have been included where available (552 spectra altogether). The compounds exhibit spectra in the ultraviolet, visible and/or near-infrared spectral regions. The compound classes and number of members include acridines (21), aromatic hydrocarbons (41), arylmethane dyes (11), azo dyes (18), biomolecules (18), chlorins/bacteriochlorins (16), coumarins (14), cyanine dyes (19), dipyrrins (7), heterocycles (26), miscellaneous dyes (13), oligophenylenes (13), oligopyrroles (6), perylenes (5), phthalocyanines (11), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (16), polyenes/polyynes (10), porphyrins (34), quinones (24) and xanthenes (15). A database of 31 solar spectra also is included.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of a cooperative multichromophoric triad system which combines the large two-photon absorption properties of fluorene-cored bis-donor quadropolar dyes and the remarkable sensitizing properties of the porphyrin subunit (i.e. high intersystem crossing and ability to produce singlet oxygen by energy transfer to oxygen from its triplet excited state) is described. After irradiation the energy can be transferred from the quadrupolar chromophores to the porphyrin with an estimated 80% efficiency via a FRET process. Moreover both the two-photon absorption properties of the quadrupolar subunits and the sensitizing and fluorescence properties of the porphyrin are retained indicating that deleterious competing processes (such as photo-induced electron transfer) are prevented in such molecular architectures thanks to the implemented design. As a result, the two-photon absorption induced singlet oxygen generation efficiency of the triad in the NIR region is found to be enhanced by an order of magnitude as compared to the porphyin subunit. Potential applications of these porphyrin-based multichromophoric systems for photodynamic therapy based upon two-photon excitation in the NIR region might be possible since it overcomes the low two-photon absorption response of porphyrin while fully retaining their remarkable photosensitizing properties.

Abstract
The ability to form triplet excited states upon two-photon excitation is important for several applications of metalloporphyrins, including two-photon phosphorescence lifetime microscopy (2PLM) and two-photon photodynamic therapy (PDT). Here we analyzed one-photon (1P) and degenerate two-photon (2P) absorption properties of several phosphorescent Pt (II) porphyrins, focusing on the effects of aromatic π-extension and peripheral substitution on triplet emissivity and two-photon absorption (2PA). Our 2PA measurements for the first time made use of direct time-resolved detection of phosphorescence, having the ability to efficiently reject laser background through microsecond time gating. π-Extension of the porphyrin macrocycle by way of syn-fusion with two external aromatic fragments, such as in syn-dibenzo- (DBP) and syn-dinaphthoporphyrins (DNP), lowers the symmetry of the porphyrin skeleton. As a result, DBPs and DNPs exhibit stronger 2PA into the one-photon-allowed B (Soret) and Q states than fully symmetric (D4h) nonextended porphyrins. However, much more 2P-active states lie above the B state and cannot be accessed due to the interfering linear absorption. Alkoxycarbonyl groups (CO2R) in the benzo-rings dramatically enhance 2PA near the B state level. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations in combinations with the sum-over-states (SOS) formalism revealed that the enhancement is due to the stabilization of higher-lying 2P-active states, which are dominated by the excitations involving orbitals extending onto the carbonyl groups. Furthermore, calculations predicted even stronger stabilization of the 2P-allowed gerade-states in symmetric Pt octaalkoxycarbonyl-tetrabenzoporphyrins. Experiments confirmed that the 2PA cross-section of PtTBP(CO2Bu)8 near 810 nm reaches above 500 GM in spite of its completely centrosymmetric structure. Combined with exceptionally bright phosphorescence (ϕphos = 0.45), strong 2PA makes Pt(II) complexes of π-extended porphyrins a valuable class of chromophores for 2P applications. Another important advantage of these porphyrinoids is their compact size and easily scalable synthesis.

Abstract
The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Abstract
Recently, third‐order nonlinear properties of porphyrins and porphyrin polymers and coordination compounds have been extensively studied in relation to their use in photomedicine and molecular photonics. A new functionalized porphyrin dye containing electron‐rich alkynes was synthesized and further modified by formal [2+2] click reactions with click reagents tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and 7, 7, 8, 8‐tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ). The photophysical properties of these porphyrin dyes, as well as the click reaction, were studied by UV/Vis spectroscopy. In particular, third‐order nonlinear optical properties of the dyes, which showed typical d‐π‐A structures, were characterized by Z‐scan techniques. In addition, the self‐assembly properties were investigated through the phase‐exchange method, and highly organized morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of the click post‐functionalization on the properties of the porphyrins were studied, and these functionalized porphyrin dyes represent an interesting set of candidates for optoelectronic device components.

Abstract
New tetraarylazadipyrromethene metal complexes with four coordinate metals (cobalt(ii), nickel(ii), copper(ii) and zinc(ii)) and with three moieties (4-methylphenyl,4-methoxyphenyl and 1-naphthyl) were designed and synthesized targeting applications utilizing two photon absorption. The effects of metals with filled or unfilled d orbitals and substituents with various electron donor properties on the charge transfer mechanism and two photon absorption properties of tetraarylazadipyrromethene compounds were investigated by ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and open aperture Z-scan experiments as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ultrafast transient absorption spectra provide evidence of an efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer between the ligand and metals which is independent of filled or unfilled d orbitals of metals. Although zinc has filled d orbitals, its complexes possess an absorption maximum including a shoulder which is attributed to partial ligand to metal L(π) → M(d*) charge transfer character (LMCT). Due to the charge transfer mechanism, metal complexes of tetraarylazadipyrromethene compounds exhibited two photon absorption properties in the femtosecond regime at 800 nm wavelength. The greatest two photon absorption cross section value was measured as 2690 GM for Zn(L(2))2 and 2374 GM for Co(L(3))2 complexes.

Abstract
Herein the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, two-photon absorption and electrochemical properties of 3,6-disubstituted carbazole tweezers is reported. A dimer resulting from a Glaser homocoupling was isolated during a Sonogashira coupling reaction between a diethynyl-carbazole spacer and a 5-bromo-triarylporphyrin and the properties of this original compound were compared with the 3,6-disubstituted carbazole bisporphyrin tweezers. The dyads reported herein present a two-photon absorption maximum at 920 nm with two-photon absorption cross-section in the 1200 GM range. Despite a strong linear absorption in the Soret region and moderate fluorescence quantum yield, they both lead to a high brightness reaching 30 000 M(-1) cm(-1) .

Abstract
We compare the two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of non-centrosymmetrical metal-free tribenzo-tetraazachlorin (H2TBTAC) and analogous symmetrical tetra-tert-butyl-phthalocyanine (H2TtBuPc). Surprisingly, despite formal lack of center of inversion, the 2PA spectrum of H2TBTAC displays a two-photon allowed transition at 935 nm, similar to gerade-gerade (g-g) transitions observed in H2TtBuPc and in other symmetrical phthalocyanines. This transition is even better resolved in the singlet-singlet excited-state absorption spectrum. We tentatively explain the survival of the g-g transition in H2TBTAC by assuming that the main π-electron conjugation pathway in the tetraaza-substituted tetrapyrrole macrocycle bypasses the outer parts of the two oppositely located isoindole rings and thus renders the optically responsive core of the chromophore quasi-centrosymmetrical. By using the independently measured ground- and excited-state absorption extinction coefficients, we also show that the two-photon absorptivity can be quantitatively explained by a simple three-level model with the lowest energy Q1 state serving as an intermediate level.

Abstract
The two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of two newly synthesized substituted porphyrins: 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-pyrrolidinylphenyl)porphyrin (1) and 5,10,15,20-tetra-(4-diphenylamino-benzoic acid phenyl) porphyrin ester (3) were measured by the femtosecond Z-scan technique at 800 nm Ti : sapphire laser and by direct nonlinear optical transmission (NLT) using nanosecond Nd : YAG laser. The substituent effects, pumped wavelength and the environment upon the molecular TPA cross-section were investigated. It is found that the TPA cross-section for 3 is enhanced under excitation of 800 nm, relative to its precursor, 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (2), due to the former possessing extension conjugation of "D-A-core-A-D" molecular architecture. Also sample 3 obtained an increased TPA cross-section in rigid film relative to that in solution, suggesting that the enhancement is facilitated by the quasi-planar structure which allows direct interbranch conjugation throughout the molecule.

Abstract
A new porphyrintetrathiafulvalene composite, where two porphyrins are bridged by te trathiafulvalene (TTF) using acetylene bonds was synthesized. The Q-band of the monomeric porphyrin appears at 590 nm whereas that of the composite is red-shifted to 620 nm and intensified. The Soret band is also red-shifted from 427 nm to 435 nm and much broadened, indicating the expansion of π-conjugation over the porphyrin and tetrathiafulvalene units. The HOMOs and LUMOs were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. Voltammetric experiments revealed that the first oxidation potential of the TTF moiety in the composite was shifted by +155 mV compa red with TTF in the absence of composite. The effective two-photon absorption (2PA) cross section values were measured by using a nanosecond open aperture Z-scan method. The maximum effective 2PA cross section values were obtained at 760 nm, as 7300 GM in benzonitrile and 5900 GM in toluene. The values obtained in the polar solvent were 1.2 to 1.5 times larger than those in the nonpolar solvent.

Abstract
The ( bpy )2 Ru II and ( phen )2 Ru II moieties were linked to [ Ni ( OBTTAP )]1, periphery through coordinate bonds in order to synthesize cationic di- and pentanuclear complexes 2-5 that were obtained as PF 6− salts. They were characterized by IR, 1 H NMR, UV-vis, and mass spectral data. The electronic absorption, emission and redox data of these bichromophoric systems indicate the presence of a high degree of intercomponent electronic interaction. The position and relative intensities of the Soret and Q bands in these complexes is altered due to peripheral binding of the metal units. The compounds were non-emissive for the Q band excitation but, Soret excitation led to a strong S 2 emission, observed between 400-450 nm. In cyclic voltammetry, the compounds exhibited one Ru centered oxidation together with one or two OBTTAP centered oxidations. The Ru II/ Ru III oxidations were observed at significantly lower potentials as compared to the corresponding simple maleonitrile-benzylthioether complexes and has been interpretted in terms of weaker d π( S )– d π( Ru ) interactions.

Abstract
Two-photon-enhanced dendritic nanoprobes are being developed for two-photon (2P) laser scanning microscopy of oxygen [1]. In these molecular constructs, phosphorescence of metalloporphyrins is coupled to two-photon absorption (2PA) of electronically separate antenna dyes via intramolecular Förster-type resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the originally developed probes, competing electron transfer (ET) between the antennae and the long-lived triplet states of metalloporphyrins partially quenched the phosphorescence, reducing the probe's sensitivity and dynamic range. The rate of such ET can be reduced by tuning the redox potentials of the chromophores. In order to identify the optimal metalloporphyrin-2P antenna pairs, we performed screening of several phosphorescent Pt porphyrins (FRET acceptors) and 2P dyes (FRET donors) using dynamic quenching of phosphorescence. Phosphorescence lifetimes of Pt porphyrins were measured as a function of the dye concentration in organic solutions. The obtained Stern-Volmer quenching constants were correlated with the corresponding ET driving forces (DeltaG(ET)), calculated using the Rehm-Weller equation. FRET-pairs with minimal quenching rates were identified. The developed approach allows convenient screening of candidate-compounds for covalent assembly of 2P-enhanced triplet nanodevices. Systematic electrochemical measurements in a series of Pt porphyrins with varying peripheral substitution and conjugation pathways are presented.

Abstract
Enhanced two-photon-absorbing (2PA) systems with triplet cores are currently under scrutiny for several biomedical applications, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and two-photon microscopy of oxygen. The performance of so far developed molecules, however, is substantially below expected. In this study we take a detailed look at the processes occurring in these systems and propose ways to improve their performance. We focus on the interchromophore distance tuning as a means for optimization of two-photon sensors for oxygen. In these constructs, energy transfer from several 2PA chromophores is used to enhance the effective 2PA cross section of phosphorescent metalloporphyrins. Previous studies have indicated that intramolecular electron transfer (ET) can act as an effective quencher of phosphorescence, decreasing the overall sensor efficiency. We studied the interplay between 2PA, energy transfer, electron transfer, and phosphorescence emission using Rhodamine B-Pt tetrabenzoporphyrin (RhB-PtTBP) adducts as model compounds. 2PA cross sections (sigma2) of tetrabenzoporphyrins (TBPs) are in the range of several tens of GM units (near 800 nm), making TBPs superior 2PA chromophores compared to regular porphyrins (sigma2 values typically 1-2 GM). Relatively large 2PA cross sections of rhodamines (about 200 GM in 800-850 nm range) and their high photostabilities make them good candidates as 2PA antennae. Fluorescence of Rhodamine B (lambda(fl) = 590 nm, phi(fl) = 0.5 in EtOH) overlaps with the Q-band of phosphorescent PtTBP (lambda(abs) = 615 nm, epsilon = 98 000 M(-1) cm(-1), phi(p) approximately 0.1), suggesting that a significant amplification of the 2PA-induced phosphorescence via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) might occur. However, most of the excitation energy in RhB-PtTBP assemblies is consumed in several intramolecular ET processes. By installing rigid nonconducting decaproline spacers (Pro10) between RhB and PtTBP, the intramolecular ETs were suppressed, while the chromophores were kept within the Förster r0 distance in order to maintain high FRET efficiency. The resulting assemblies exhibit linear amplification of their 2PA-induced phosphorescence upon increase in the number of 2PA antenna chromophores and show high oxygen sensitivity. We also have found that PtTBPs possess unexpectedly strong forbidden S0 --> T1 bands (lambda(max) = 762 nm, epsilon = 120 M-1 cm-1). The latter may overlap with the laser spectrum and lead to unwanted linear excitation.

Abstract
This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first study of two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra of a number of symmetrically substituted phthalocyanines in the excitation wavelength region from lambda(ex)=800 to 1600 nm. The selected molecules vary by position of substitution (alpha or beta), number of substituent groups (4, 8, or 16), and presence or absence of metal (Zn or Al) in the center. For all phthalocyanines we find a moderately strong (sigma(2) approximately 100-200 GM), pure electronic, gerade-gerade (g-g) 2PA transition, which shows up as a well-resolved relatively narrow peak in the energy region between Q and B bands (lambda(ex)=870-1100 nm). In metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) this lowest g-g transition is followed by the onset of other higher-frequency 2PA transitions. In some metal-free phthalocyanines (H(2)Pcs) we also reveal a second, broader 2PA transition at slightly higher frequency. In both MPcs and H(2)Pcs, we find a strong monotonic increase of integrated strength of the lowest g-g transition as a function of electron-accepting ability of peripheral substituents, expressed as their aggregated Hammett constant. By using few essential states models (three states for MPcs and four states for H(2)Pcs) we demonstrate the primary role of excited-state transition dipole moment in this effect.

Abstract
Two-photon absorption spectra (2PA) of a series of conjugated dimers and the corresponding monomer were studied in the near-IR region. All of the dimers show very large peak cross section values, sigma(2) = (3-10) x 10(3) GM (1 GM = 1 x 10(-50) cm(4) s photon(-1)), which is several hundred times larger than that obtained for the corresponding monomer in the same region. We explain such dramatic cooperative enhancement by a combination of several factors, such as strong enhancement of the lowest one-photon Q-transition, better resonance conditions in the three-level system, dramatic enhancement of the excited-state singlet-singlet transition, and parallel arrangement of consecutive transitions in dimers, as compared to perpendicular arrangement in the monomer. We show that the absolute values of the 2PA cross section in these molecules are quantitatively described by a quantum-mechanical expression, derived for the three-level model. We also demonstrate the possibility of singlet oxygen generation upon one- and two-photon excitation of these dimers, which makes them particularly attractive for photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
The nonlinear optical and time-resolved properties of a series of phenylazomethine-porphyrin dendrimers are reported. The linear optical properties were also investigated, and the efficiency of the energy transfer process was obtained. Measurements were also carried out with the basic building-block molecules. The process of frequency up-converted emission was observed in these porphyrin dendrimers. The mechanism for this effect is investigated and related to the process of "hot-band" absorption in the phenylazomethine-porphyrin system. Time-resolved measurements also suggested efficient intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution in these systems. These properties suggest that the porphyrin dendrimers may also have applications in light harvesting of low-frequency photons, as well as in sensors.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has received increased attention as a treatment modality for malignant tumors as well as non-oncologic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). An alternative to excite the photosensitizer by the common one-photon absorption is the method of two-photon excitation (TPE). This two-photon photodynamic therapy has the potential of improving the therapeutic outcome due to a highly localized photodynamic effect. The present study investigated the two-photon excited PDT performing in vitro experiments where C6 rat glioma cells were irradiated with a pulsed and focused fs Ti:sapphire laser emitting light at 800 nm. The irradiance distribution of the laser beam was carefully analyzed before the experiment and the applied irradiance was known for each position within the irradiated cell layer. Cells were divided into four groups and one group was incubated with 5-ALA and irradiated 4-5h later. The survival of this group was tested after irradiation by means of ethidium bromide and acridine orange staining and compared to a control group, which was irradiated under the same conditions, but not incubated with 5-ALA before. Both groups showed necrotic areas depending on the applied irradiance, the value of which at the margin of the necrotic area could be deduced from its size. 5-ALA incubated cells became necrotic after irradiation with a mean irradiance above 6.1 x 10(10) W/cm(2), while non-incubated cells remained viable. Cells of both groups became necrotic when treated with an irradiance above 10.9 x 10(10) W/cm(2). The observed affected area of the cell layers was between 0.13 mm(2) and 1.10 mm(2). Since the irradiation of non-incubated cells below the mean power density of 10.9 x 10(10) W/cm(2) induced no necrosis, apparently no thermal damage was induced in the cells and necrosis of the 5-ALA incubated cells can be ascribed to the photodynamic effect induced by two-photon excitation. The successful photodynamic treatment of a large area of a monolayer cell culture induced by two-photon excitation offers new perspectives for photodynamic treatment modalities.

Abstract
We have synthesized a novel, two-photon-absorbing photosensitizer for two-photon-absorption photodynamic therapy (2PA-PDT). The molecule is a butadiyne-bridged porphyrin dimer terminated with two water-soluble porphyrin monomers connected through Zn-imidazolyl self-assembly and covalently linked through olefin metathesis. It has an effective two-photon-absorption (2PA) cross-section value, sigma((2)), of 33 000+/-4600 GM with 5-ns pulses at 890 nm measured by using the open-aperture Z-scan technique. The compound was found to generate singlet oxygen, cytotoxic for tumor cells in photodynamic therapy (PDT), under 2PA conditions by conducting photobleaching experiments with anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid sodium salt (ADPA).

Abstract
Porphycenes are structural isomers of porphyrins that have many unique properties and features. In the present work, the resonant two-photon absorption of 2,7,12,17-tetraphenylporphycene (TPPo) and its palladium(II) complex (PdTPPo) has been investigated. The data obtained are compared to those from the isomeric compound, meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). Detection of phosphorescence from singlet molecular oxygen, O2(a(1)Delta(g)), produced upon irradiation of these compounds, was used to obtain two-photon excitation spectra and to quantify two-photon absorption cross sections, delta. In the spectral region of 750-850 nm, the two-photon absorption cross sections at the band maxima for both TPPo and PdTPPo, delta = 2280 and 1750 GM, respectively, are significantly larger than that for TPP. This difference is attributed to the phenomenon of so-called resonance enhancement; for the porphycenes, the two-photon transition is nearly resonant with a comparatively intense one-photon Q-band transition. The results of quantum mechanical calculations using density functional quadratic response theory are in excellent agreement with the experimental data and, as such, demonstrate that comparatively high-level quantum chemical methods can be used to interpret and predict nonlinear optical properties from such large molecular systems. One important point realized through these experiments and calculations is that one must exercise caution when using qualitative molecular-symmetry-derived arguments to predict the expected spectral relationship between allowed one- and two-photon transitions. From a practical perspective, this study establishes that, in comparison to porphyrins and other tetrapyrrolic macrocyclic systems, porphycenes exhibit many desirable attributes for use as sensitizers in two-photon initiated photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT), the use of light-activated drugs (photosensitizers), is an emerging treatment modality for tumors as well as various nononcologic conditions. Single-photon (1-gamma) PDT is limited by low specificity of the photosensitizer, leading to damage to healthy tissue adjacent to the diseased target tissue. One solution is to use simultaneous two-photon (2-gamma) excitation with ultrafast pulses of near-IR light. Due to the nonlinear interaction mechanism, 2-gamma excitation with a focused beam is localized in three dimensions, allowing treatment volumes on the order of femtoliters. We propose that this will be valuable in PDT of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which causes blindness due to abnormal choroidal neovasculature and which is currently treated by 1-gamma PDT. Here, Photofrin has been used as the photosensitizer to demonstrate proof-of-principle of 2-gamma killing of vascular endothelial cells in vitro. The 2-gamma absorption properties of Photofrin were investigated in the 750-900 nm excitation wavelength range. It was shown that 2-gamma excitation dominates over 1-gamma excitation above 800 nm. The 2-gamma absorption spectrum of Photofrin in the 800-900 nm excitation wavelength range was measured. The 2-gamma cross section decreased from about 10 GM (1 GM = 10(-50) cm4 s/photon) at 800 nm to 5 GM at 900 nm. Adherent YPEN-1 endothelial cells were then incubated with Photofrin for 24 h and then treated by PDT at 850 nm where the 1-gamma contribution was negligible. Cell death was monitored with the use of 2-gamma scanning laser microscopy. The light doses required for killing were high (6300 J cm(-2) for approximately 50% killing), but 2-gamma cytotoxicity was unequivocally demonstrated. Although Photofrin is, per se, not a good choice for 2-gamma PDT due to its low 2-gamma cross section, this work provides baseline data to guide the development of novel photosensitizers with much higher 2-gamma cross sections (>100 GM), which will be required for 2-gamma PDT of AMD (and other conditions) to be clinically practical.

Abstract
We study two-photon absorption (2PA) in two series of new free-base porphyrins with 4-(diphenylamino)stilbene or 4,4'-bis-(diphenylamino)stilbene (BDPAS) attached via pi-conjugating linkers at the porphyrin meso-position. We show that this new substitution modality increases the 2PA cross section in the Soret band region (excitation wavelength 750-900 nm) of the core porphyrin by nearly 2 orders of magnitude, from sigma(2) approximately 10 GM for the meso-phenyl-substituted analogue to sigma(2) approximately 10(3) GM for the ethynyl-linked BDPAS-porphyrin dyad. The 2PA properties are quantitatively described by considering two different and interfering 2PA quantum transition pathways. The first path involves virtual transition via intermediate one-photon resonance. The second path bypasses the intermediate resonance and occurs due to a large permanent dipole moment difference between the ground and the final electronic states. To our best knowledge, this is the first experimental observation of the combined effect of these two pathways on one particular two-photon transition, resulting in quantum-interference-modulated 2PA strength.

Abstract
Investigations into the effects of electrostatic interactions on linear and two-photon absorption (TPA) properties are probed using a reference polar chromophore and different related compounds. Compounds in which a passive charge is present near the active chromophore, as well as dimers of the reference molecule, were studied. The combined experimental and theoretical investigation demonstrates that strong modulation of the properties can be attained. In particular, the TPA response of dimers is heavily affected by unconventional excitonic effects, that is, beyond the standard Heitler-London approximation. These effects, which stem from purely electrostatic interactions, lower the nonlinear optical response in the investigated case by an additional amount (up to 20%), and are expected to enhance the TPA cross section in other supramolecular alignments. Electrostatic interactions cannot be overlooked when modelling or investigating highly concentrated and/or confined samples, as are usually needed in many applications. The correct knowledge of their effects can be exploited to guide engineering at the molecular and supramolecular level.

Abstract
A water-soluble nido-carboranyl-tetrabenzoporphyrin has been synthesized in 43% overall yield, by condensation of butanopyrrole with a carboranylbenzaldehyde, followed by metal insertion, oxidation, demetallation and deboronation reactions. This compound accumulated within human glioblastoma T98G cells to a significant higher extent than a structurally related nido-carboranylporphyrin, and localized preferentially in the cell lysosomes. Animal toxicity studies using male and female BALB/c mice revealed that both compounds are non-toxic even at a dose of 160 mg/kg, administered intraperitoneally as a single injection at a concentration of 4 mg/mL. It is concluded that the tetra(carboranylphenyl)-tetrabenzoporphyrin is a promising new sensitizer for the treatment of malignant tumors.

Abstract
Supramolecular porphyrin self-assemblies have been prepared from butadiyne-linked bis(imidazolylporphyrin) by complementary coordination of imidazole to zinc, and their two-photon absorption (2PA) and higher-order nonlinear absorption properties were investigated over femtosecond time scales using an open-aperture Z-scan method. The self-assembled porphyrin dimer of the conjugated monozinc bisporphyrin 7D was shown to have a large 2PA cross section (7.6 x 10(3) GM, where 1 GM = 10(-50) cm(4) s molecule(-1) photon(-1)) at 887 nm. By comparison of this result with that for a meso-meso-linked porphyrin array without the butadiyne connection (3.7 x 10(2) GM at 964 nm), it was demonstrated that the predominant factor in this significant enhancement of the cross section was the expansion of porphyrin-porphyrin pi-conjugation. Self-coordination and monozinc metalation were also found to be contributing factors. Furthermore, a novel self-assembled porphyrin polymer 8P consisting of a biszinc complex with a mean molecular weight of M(n) = 1.5 x 10(5) Da was shown to exhibit an extraordinarily large two-photon absorption cross section (4.4 x 10(5) GM at 873 nm). Nanosecond Z-scan experiments for 7D and 8P were also undertaken and resulted in the measurement of large effective 2PA cross sections, including the excited-state absorption (2.1 x 10(5) GM for 7D and 2.2 x 10(7) GM for 8P, respectively). Finally, three-photon absorption was observed by femtosecond Z-scan experiments at 1188 nm (7.1 x 10(-89) m(6) s(2)) and 1282 nm (1.8 x 10(-89) m(6) s(2)), an observation which is the first of its kind in porphyrin chemistry.
