Abstract
Kenaf is one of the important commercial fiber crops worldwide and defatted kenaf seed meal (DKSM) is a secondary by-product from the kenaf industry. Thus, efforts to turn this low-cost agricultural waste into value-added functional food ingredients will definitely bring advantageous impacts to the community health, environment and economy. The present study was aimed to investigate the cardioprotective properties of DKSM and its phenolics-saponins rich extract (PSRE) in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rat model. Hypercholesterolemia was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats via atherogenic diet feeding and dietary interventions were conducted by incorporating DKSM (15% and 30%) and equivalent levels of PSRE (2.3% and 4.6%, respectively, equivalent to the total content of phenolics and saponins in DKSM groups) into the atherogenic diets. After 10 weeks of DKSM and PSRE supplementation, the hepatosomatic index, hepatosteatosis, serum lipid profile, Castelli risk indexes as well as hepatic and renal functions of hypercholesterolemic rats were significantly improved (p < 0.05). Besides, the levels of hepatic Hmgcr and serum Pcsk9 were lowered, along with transcriptional upregulations of hepatic Cyp7a1, Abca1, Lcat, ApoA2 and ApoE (p < 0.05). The gene expression of hepatic Ldlr was marginally enhanced by DKSM supplementation (p > 0.05), but superiorly upregulated by PSRE (p < 0.05). The combined results showed that hypercholesterolemia and the atherogenic risk in rats were effectively attenuated by DKSM and PSRE supplementation, possibly via modulations of multiple vital processes in hepatic cholesterol metabolism. Furthermore, phenolics and saponins may be the bioactives conferring DKSM and PSRE with their anti-hypercholesterolemic properties. In conclusion, DKSM and PSRE are prospective cardioprotective functional food ingredients for hypercholesterolemic individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dietary polyphenols have been demonstrated to favourably modify a number of cardiovascular risk markers such as blood pressure (BP), endothelial function and plasma lipids. We conducted a randomised, double-blind, controlled, crossover trial to investigate the effects of a phenolic-rich olive leaf extract (OLE) on BP and a number of associated vascular and metabolic measures. METHODS A total of 60 pre-hypertensive [systolic blood pressure (SBP): 121-140 mmHg; diastolic blood pressure (DBP): 81-90 mmHg] males [mean age 45 (±SD 12.7 years, BMI 26.7 (±3.21) kg/m2] consumed either OLE (136 mg oleuropein; 6 mg hydroxytyrosol) or a polyphenol-free control daily for 6 weeks before switching to the alternate arm after a 4-week washout. RESULTS Daytime [-3.95 (±SD 11.48) mmHg, p = 0.027] and 24-h SBP [-3.33 (±SD 10.81) mmHg, p = 0.045] and daytime and 24-h DBP [-3.00 (±SD 8.54) mmHg, p = 0.025; -2.42 (±SD 7.61) mmHg, p = 0.039] were all significantly lower following OLE intake, relative to the control. Reductions in plasma total cholesterol [-0.32 (±SD 0.70) mmol/L, p = 0.002], LDL cholesterol [-0.19 (±SD 0.56) mmol/L, p = 0.017] and triglycerides [-0.18 (±SD 0.48), p = 0.008] were also induced by OLE compared to control, whilst a reduction in interleukin-8 [-0.63 (±SD 1.13) pg/ml; p = 0.026] was also detected. Other markers of inflammation, vascular function and glucose metabolism were not affected. CONCLUSION Our data support previous research, suggesting that OLE intake engenders hypotensive and lipid-lowering effects in vivo.

Abstract
Tube-fed elderly patients are generally supplied with the same type of nutrition over long periods, resulting in an increased risk for micronutrient deficiencies. Dietary polyphenols promote immunity and have anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-oxidative properties. Carica papaya Linn. is rich in several polyphenols; however, these polyphenols are poorly absorbed from the digestive tract in their original polymerized form. Therefore, we determined the molecular components of a fermented Carica papaya Linn. preparation, as well as its effects on immunity and the composition of gut microbiota in tube-fed patients. Different doses of the fermented C. papaya L. preparation were administered to three groups of tube-fed patients for 30 days. Its effects on fecal microbiota composition and immunity were assessed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and immune-marker analysis, respectively. The chemical composition of the fermented C. papaya L. preparation was analyzed by capillary electrophoresis- and liquid chromatography- time of flight mass spectrometry. The fermented C. papaya L. preparation restored peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cytolytic activity; however, no other biomarkers of immunity were observed. Treatment with the preparation (9 g/day) significantly reduced the abundance of Firmicutes in the fecal microbiota. In particular, treatment reduced Clostridium scindens and Eggerthella lenta in most patients receiving 9 g/day. Chemical analysis identified low-molecular-weight phenolic acids as polyphenol metabolites; however, no polymerized, large-molecular-weight molecules were detected. Our study indicates that elderly patients who are tube-fed over the long-term have decreased PBMC cytolytic activity. In addition, low-molecular-weight polyphenol metabolites fermented from polymerized polyphenols restore PBMC cytolytic activity and modulate the composition of gut microbiota in tube-fed patients.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and other developed countries, and is fast growing in developing countries, particularly as life expectancy in all parts of the world increases. Current recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease issued jointly from the American Academy of Cardiology and American Heart Association emphasize that lifestyle modification should be incorporated into any treatment plan, including those on statin drugs. However, there is a dearth of data on the interaction between diet and statins with respect to additive, complementary or antagonistic effects. This review collates the available data on the interaction of statins and dietary patterns, cognition, genetics and individual nutrients, including vitamin D, niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, phytochemicals (polyphenols and stanols) and alcohol. Of note, although the available data is summarized, the scope is limited, conflicting and disparate. In some cases it is likely there is unrecognized synergism. Virtually no data are available describing the interactions of statins with dietary components or dietary pattern in subgroups of the population, particularly those who may benefit most were positive effects identified. Hence, it is virtually impossible to draw any firm conclusions at this time. Nevertheless, this area is important because were the effects of statins and diet additive or synergistic harnessing the effect could potentially lead to the use of a lower intensity statin or dose.

Effects of Dietary Antibiotic and Cinnamon Oil Supplementation on Antioxidant Enzyme Activities, Cholesterol Levels and Fatty Acid Compositions of Serum and Meat in Broiler Chickens. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate potential hypocholesterolaemic antioxidant activities of cinnamon oil and antibiotic, and their effects on fatty acid compositions of serum and meat in broilers. A total of 240 Ross-308 chicks, five days old, were divided randomly into four treatment groups composed of 60 chicks each. Experimental groups were: corn-soybean meal basal diet (Control), basal diet supplemented with 10 ppm avilamycin (antibiotic) and 500 or 1000 ppm of cinnamon oil (C500, C1000). Cinnamon oil lowered cholesterol levels of serum (P < 0.01), breast and thigh meat (P< 0.05) in cinnamon groups compared to control and antibiotic groups. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA, nmol/g protein) level was reduced significantly in C1000 group (P< 0.05). Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px,μkat/g protein) and catalase (CAT, kat/l) enzyme activities were different among the groups (P< 0.001). The higher levels of GSH-Px and CAT were obtained in C1000 group, the lower levels of these indicators were obtained in the antibiotic group. Total saturated fatty acid (SFA) ratio decreased and total unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratio, ω-6 fatty acids increased significantly in serum and thigh meat in cinnamon groups (P< 0.01). These results showed that cinnamon oil had hypocholesterolaemic and antioxidant characteristics, and it also improved meat quality.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in vivo efficacy of two cinnamic acid synthetic derivatives (allyl 3-[4-hydroxyphenyl]propanoate; HPP304, 1-naphthyl-methyl 3-[4-hydroxyphenyl]propanoate; HPP305) in high-cholesterol fed rats and compare their actions to that of cinnamic acid. Cinnamic acid and its synthetic derivatives were supplemented with a high-cholesterol diet for 42 days at a dose of 0.135 mmol/100g of diet. The supplementation of HPP304 and HPP305 significantly lowered cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the plasma and liver with a simultaneous increase in the HDL-cholesterol concentration, whereas cinnamic acid only lowered the plasma cholesterol concentration. Cinnamic acid lowered hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity in high-cholesterol fed rats, however, its synthetic derivatives (HPP304 and HPP305) did not affect HMG-CoA reductase activity compared to the control group. Instead, the HPP304 and HPP305 supplements significantly lowered hepatic acyl coenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase activity and increased the fecal bile acid. The SOD activity of the erythrocytes and liver was not different between the groups, however, the activities of CAT and GSH-Px, and the level of GSH in the erythrocytes were significantly higher in the HPP304 and HPP305 groups than in the control group. On the other hand, the activities of CAT and GSH-Px, and the level of malondialdehyde in the liver were significantly lower in the HPP304 and HPP305 groups. The antioxidant activities of these cinnamic acid synthetic derivatives were similar to the cinnamic acid in the high-cholesterol fed rats. In addition, HPP304 and HPP305 lowered amniotransferase activity in the plasma. These results suggest that two cinnamic acid synthetic derivatives (HPP304 and HPP305) exert lipid-lowering action and antioxidant properties without hepatotoxicity in high-cholesterol fed rats.

Abstract
Cholesterol feeding has been often used to study the etiology of hypercholesterolaemia-related metabolic disturbances. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of a pentacyclic triterpene, lupeol, and its ester derivative on hepatic abnormalities associated with hypercholesterolemic rats. Hypercholesterolaemia was induced in male Wistar rats by feeding them with a high cholesterol diet (HCD) containing normal rat chow supplemented with 4% cholesterol and 1% cholic acid, for 30 days. Lupeol and lupeol linoleate were supplemented (50 mg/kg body wt/day) during the last 15 days. Increased hepatic lipid profile along with abnormalities in lipid-metabolizing enzyme activities were seen in hypercholesterolemic rats. An apparent increase in the expression of Acyl-CoA cholesterol acyltransferase mRNA was seen in HCD fed rats. The activities of hepatic marker enzymes, which serve as indices of cellular injury, were altered in HCD fed rats. Treatment with triterpenes significantly modulated the abnormalities induced by hypercholesterolaemia. Also, an increased (P >0.001) faecal excretion of cholesterol and bile acids were observed in lupeol and lupeol linoleate group when compared with HCD fed group. Therefore, it can be concluded that triterpenes treatment afforded substantial protection against the anomalies, which are manifested during the early stage of hypercholesterolemic atherogenesis.

Abstract
Two amide synthetic derivatives of 3,4-di(OH)-hydrocinnamate (HC), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic (l-serine methyl ester) amide (E030) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic (l-aspartic acid) amide (E076), were investigated to compare their lipid-lowering efficacy with HC. Male rats were fed a 1 g/100 g high-cholesterol diet for 6 weeks with supplements of either clofibrate (0.02%, w/w), HC (0.025%, w/w), E030 (0.039%, w/w) or E076 (0.041%, w/w). The clofibrate supplement was used as a positive control for the lipid-lowering efficacy. The food intakes and body weight gains were not significantly different among the groups. The plasma and hepatic cholesterol and triglyceride levels were lower in clofibrate, HC, E030, and E076-supplemented groups compared to the control group. The supplementation of HC and its amide derivatives was as effective as clofibrate in increasing the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total plasma cholesterol and reducing the atherogenic index (AI). The hepatic cholesterol level in the HC and E076 groups was significantly lower than that in the clofibrate group. The hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA reductase) and acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activities were significantly lower in the all test groups than in the control group. The excretion of neutral sterol was significantly higher in the HC, E030, and E076-supplemented groups compared to the control group. The plasma AST and ALT activities, indirect indexes of hepatic toxicity, were significantly lower in the HC, E030, and E076-supplemented groups than in the control group. Accordingly, the current results suggest that E030 and E076, two amide synthetic derivatives of HC, are effective in lowering lipid activity.

Abstract
This study was designed to test the lipid-lowering and the antioxidative activities of green and black olive phenolic extracts. Wistar rats fed a standard laboratory diet or a cholesterol-rich diet for 16 weeks were used. The serum lipid levels, the malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) as well as that of catalase (CAT) were examined. The cholesterol-rich diet induced hypercholesterolemia that was manifested in the elevation of total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Administration of aqueous methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of green olives and ethyl acetate extract of black olives significantly lowered the serum levels of TC and LDL-C, while increasing the serum level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Furthermore, the content of MDA in liver, heart and kidney decreased significantly after oral administration of green and black olive extracts compared with those of rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet. In addition, olive extracts increased CAT and SOD activities in liver. These results suggested that the hypocholesterolemic effect of green and black olive extracts might be due to their abilities to lower serum cholesterol level as well as to slow down the lipid peroxidation process and to enhance the antioxidant enzyme activity.

Abstract
The effect of 3,4-di(OH)-phenylpropionic acid (L-phenylalanine methyl ester) amide (SL-1063), a synthetic derivative of 3,4-di(OH)-cinnamate, on the cholesterol metabolism and antioxidant enzyme system was examined in rats. Diets that included either SL-1063 (0.046%, w/w) or lovastatin (0.02%, w/w) as a supplement, plus 1 g cholesterol/100 g diet were fed to rats ad libitum for 5 weeks. The total plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly lowered by the SL-1063 supplement compared to the control group. Meanwhile, the levels of plasma HDL-cholesterol and ratio of HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol (%) were significantly higher in the SL-1063 group than in the control group. However, the lovastatin supplement did not affect the plasma lipid level. The hepatic cholesterol level and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase activity were significantly lowered in the lovastatin group compared to the SL-1063 group; however, the hepatic triglyceride level did not differ among the groups. The activity of hepatic acyl CoA: cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT), the enzyme that catalyzes hepatic cholesterol esterification, was significantly lower in the lovastatin and SL-1063 groups than in the control group. Furthermore, the SL-1063 supplement elevated the excretion of fecal sterols. As regards the hepatic antioxidant enzyme system, the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were all significantly higher in the SL-1063 group compared to the control group, whereas only the GR activity was significantly increased by the lovastatin supplement. No marked difference in the GSH levels and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activities was observed among the groups. The levels of plasma and hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were lowered by the SL-1063 supplement compared to the control group. Accordingly, the current results suggest that SL-1063, a synthetic derivative of 3,4-di(OH)-cinnamate, is effective in lowering the plasma lipids and improving the antioxidant enzyme system.

Abstract
A preliminary study revealed that 3,4-di(OH)-hydrocinnamate (HC), a polyphenolic compound, lowered the plasma lipids in high-cholesterol fed rats. Accordingly, this study was designed to test the lipid-lowering efficacy of a synthetic derivative, 3,4-di(OH)-phenylpropionic (L-leucine) amide (PPLA), in rats fed a high-cholesterol (1%, wt/wt) diet. As such, HC or PPLA was given as supplement to a high-cholesterol diet for 6 weeks at a dose of 0.137 mmol/100 g diet. The supplementation of HC and PPLA significantly lowered the plasma and hepatic cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to the control group. The activities of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase (164 +/- 9.12 and 124.74 +/- 17.09 pmol/min/mg protein vs. 245.41 +/- 13.01 pmol/min/mg protein, p < 0.05) and ACAT (411.49 +/- 11.48 and 334.35 +/- 17.68 pmol/min/mg protein vs. 490.41 +/- 16.69 pmol/min/mg protein, p < 0.05) were significantly lower in the HC- and PPLA-supplemented groups than in the control group. However, PPLA was more effective in inhibiting the enzyme activities than HC. The excretion of neutral sterol was significantly higher in HC- and PPLA-supplemented groups than in the control group. Therefore, these results indicate that PPLA, a leucine-attached version of HC, exhibited a similar significant hypocholesterolemic effect to HC in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet.

Abstract
A series of cinnamic acid derivatives were synthesized and their biological abilities on lipoprotein metabolism were examined. Among the tested compounds, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (l-phenylalanine methyl ester) amide (1) and 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinammic acid (l-aspartic acid dibenzyl ester) amide (2) inhibited human acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase-1 and -2 activities with apparent IC(50) around 60 and 95 microM, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 also served as an antioxidant against copper mediated low-density lipoproteins (LDL) oxidation with apparent IC(50)=52 and 3 microM, compound 1 and 2, respectively. Additionally, decrease of HDL-particle size under presence of LDL was inhibited by the 1 at 307 microM of final concentration. Treatment of the 1 or 2 did not influence normal growth of RAW264.7 without detectable cytotoxic activity from a cell viability test. These results suggest that the new cinnamic acid derivatives possess useful biological activity as an anti-atherosclerotic agent with inhibition of cellular cholesterol storage and transport by the both ACAT, inhibition of LDL-oxidation, HDL particle size rearrangement.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the lipid lowering and antioxidant capacity of naringin in LDL receptor knockout (LDLR-KO) mice fed a cholesterol (0.1 g/100 g) diet. As such, naringin or lovastatin (0.02 g/100 g) was supplemented in a cholesterol diet for 6 weeks. The naringin and lovastatin supplementation significantly lowered the plasma total cholesterol level compared to the control group. The plasma and hepatic triglyceride level was only lowered by the lovastatin supplement, while the hepatic cholesterol content was lowered by both the naringin and lovastatin supplements compared to the control group. The hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity was significantly lower in the naringin and lovastatin supplemented groups than in the control group, whereas the ACAT activity was unaffected. The excretion of total sterol was significantly higher in the naringin and lovastatin groups compared to the control group due to significant changes in the acidic and neutral sterol, respectively. When comparing the hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities, the superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione reductase activities were all significantly higher in the naringin-supplemented group than in the control group, while only the lovastatin supplement increased the glutathione reductase activity. Accordingly, the current results confirmed that naringin lowers the plasma cholesterol level via the inhibition of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity and increases the excretion of fecal sterol. Naringin was also found to improve the activities of hepatic antioxidant enzymes against oxidative stress in a hypercholesterolemic animal model, i.e. cholesterol-fed LDLR-KO mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of 4-hydroxycinnamate (4-(OH)-C) supplement on the lipid metabolism and antioxidant system of rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. METHODS Three groups of rats were given a diet containing 1 g cholesterol/kg for 6 weeks. The control group only received a high cholesterol diet, whereas the other two groups received a diet including lovastatin or 4-(OH)-C (0.1 g/100 g). RESULTS The plasma total cholesterol concentration was significantly lowered by the 4-(OH)-C supplement, whereas the HDL-cholesterol level was higher in this group. The 4-(OH)-C supplement significantly lowered the hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides levels, respectively. Accumulation of hepatic lipid droplet was the highest in control group; however, it was decreased by supplementation of the 4-(OH)-C and the lovastatin. The hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activities were not significantly different between the groups, whereas the ACAT activity was significantly lowered in the lovastatin group. The 4-(OH)-C significantly lowered the hepatic TBARS content. And it did not alter the neutral sterol and total fecal sterol, however, the fecal acidic sterol was higher in the lovastatin and the 4-(OH)-C groups than in the control group. CONCLUSION These results indicate that 4-(OH)-C was effective in lowering the plasma cholesterol and hepatic lipids.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of cinnamate, a phenolic compound found in cinnamon bark and other plant materials, on lipid metabolism and antioxidant enzyme activities in rats fed a high cholesterol diet. Three groups of rats were given a diet containing 1 g of cholesterol/kg for 6 weeks. The control group only received the high cholesterol diet, whereas the other two groups received a diet supplemented with lovastatin or cinnamate (0.1 g/100 g of diet). The plasma high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were significantly higher in the cinnamate group than in either the control or lovastatin groups, and the atherogenic index was significantly lower in rats with cinnamate supplementation. Supplementation with cinnamate resulted in significantly lower hepatic cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Accumulation of hepatic lipid droplets was higher in the control group than in the rats supplemented with either cinnamate or lovastatin. Hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase activity was significantly lower in the cinnamate group compared with the other groups, whereas only acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase activity was significantly lower in the lovastatin group compared with the control group. Cinnamate supplementation resulted in higher catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities, while hepatic thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were significantly lower in both the cinnamate and lovastatin groups. The fecal acidic sterol was higher in the lovastatin group than in the control or cinnamate groups. These results suggest that dietary cinnamate inhibits hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity, resulting in lower hepatic cholesterol content, and suppresses lipid peroxidation via enhancement of hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hesperetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid that has hypolipidemic properties. METHODS Male rats were fed a 1 g/100 g high-cholesterol diet for 5 weeks along with hesperetin (0.02%, 0.066 mmol/100 g diet) and hesperetin metabolites. The hesperetin metabolites, m-hydroxycinnamic acid (m-HC), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid (3,4-DHPP), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (ferulic acid), were supplemented based on an equivalent amount of hesperetin. RESULTS The supplementation of hesperetin and its metabolites significantly lowered the plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations compared to the control group. The hepatic HMG-CoA reductase and acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activities were significantly lower in the hesperetin and its metabolite supplemented groups than in the control group. The excretion of acidic sterol was significantly higher in the hesperetin, m-HC, 3,4-DHPP, and ferulic acid supplemented groups than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrated that the hesperetin metabolites played as potent a role as hesperetin in plasma lipid-lowering activities in vivo, and further suggest that cholesterol biosynthesis and esterification were concomitantly reduced by hesperetin and its metabolites, as indicated by the decreased HMG-CoA reductase and ACAT activities.
