Direct α-Arylation of Benzo[b]furans Catalyzed by a Pd3 Cluster

As an interim paradigm for the catalysts between those based on more conventional mononuclear molecular Pd complexes and Pdn nanoparticles widely used in organic synthesis, polynuclear palladium clusters have attracted great attention for their unique reactivity and electronic properties. However, the development of Pd cluster catalysts for organic transformations and mechanistic investigations is still largely unexploited. Herein, we disclose the use of trinuclear palladium (Pd3Cl) species as an active catalyst for the direct C-H α-arylation of benzo[b]furans with aryl iodides to afford 2-arylbenzofurans in good yields under mild conditions. With this method, broad substrate adaptability was observed, and several drug intermediates were synthesized in high yields. Mechanistic studies indicated that the Pd3 core most likely remained intact throughout the reaction course.

Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonylative Difunctionalization of Unactivated Alkenes Initiated by Unstabilized Enolates

This report describes the first example of palladium-catalyzed carbonylative difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes initiated by enolate nucleophiles. The approach involves initiation by an unstabilized enolate nucleophile under an atmospheric pressure of CO and termination with a carbon electrophile. This process is compatible with a diverse range of electrophiles, including aryl, heteroaryl, and vinyl iodides to yield synthetically useful 1,5-diketone products, which were demonstrated to be precursors for multi-substituted pyridines. A PdI -dimer complex with two bridging CO units was observed although its role in catalysis is not yet understood.

Isolation and Structures of Polyarene Palladium Nanoclusters

We report that surrounding coordination of neutral six-membered arene rings affords molecularly well-defined organotransition metal nanoclusters. With the use of [2.2]paracyclophane as the face-capping arene ligand, we have isolated two polyarene palladium nanoclusters, one consisting of a hexakis-arene ligand shell and a hexagonal close-packed Pd₁₃ anticuboctahedron trichloride core, and the other consisting of an octakis-arene ligand shell and a non-close-packed Pd₁₇ square gyrobicupola dichloride core, both with Pd-Pd direct bonding. The μ₄-facial coordination mode of arene was discovered through the structural characterization of the Pd₁₃ cluster. Their Pd₁₃ and Pd₁₇ cores, which are distinct from the previously identified face-centered-cubic Pd₁₃ core surrounded by seven-membered cycloheptatrienyl, are explained by stereochemical and theoretical analyses.

Dinuclear and tetranuclear group 10 metal complexes constructed from linear tetrasilane comprising both Si-H and Si-Si moieties

The activation of Si-H bonds and/or Si-Si bonds in organosilicon compounds by transition-metal species plays a crucial role for the production of functional organosilicon compounds. Although group-10-metal species are frequently used to activate Si-H and/or Si-Si bonds, so far, systematic investigation to clarify the preferences of these metal species with respect to the activation of Si-H and/or Si-Si bonds remain elusive. Here, we report that platinum(0) species that bear isocyanide or N-heterocyclic-carbene (NHC) ligands selectively activates the terminal Si-H bonds of the linear tetrasilane Ph₂(H)SiSiPh₂SiPh₂Si(H)Ph₂ in a stepwise manner, whereby the Si-Si bonds remain intact. In contrast, analogous palladium(0) species are preferably inserted into the Si-Si bonds of the same linear tetrasilane, whereby the terminal Si-H bonds remain intact. Substitution of the terminal hydride groups in Ph₂(H)SiSiPh₂SiPh₂Si(H)Ph₂ with chloride groups leads to the insertion of platinum(0) isocyanide into all Si-Si bonds to afford an unprecedented zig-zag Pt₄ cluster.

Non-directed C-H arylation of electron-deficient arenes by synergistic silver and Pd3 cluster catalysis

Transition-metal clusters have attracted great attention in catalysis due to their unique reactivity and electronic properties, especially for novel substrate binding and activation modes at the bridging coordination sites of metal clusters. Although palladium complexes have demonstrated outstanding catalytic performance in various transformations, the catalytic behaviors of polynuclear palladium clusters in many important synthetic methodologies remain much less explored so far. Herein, we disclose the use of an atomically defined tri-nuclear palladium (Pd₃Cl) species as a catalyst precursor in Ag(I)-assisted direct C-H arylation with aryl iodides under mild conditions. This catalyst system leads to the formation of synthetically important biaryls in good yields with high site selectivities without the assistance of directing groups.

Di- and trinuclear sandwich complexes of a cross-conjugated fulvene

We report di- and trinuclear palladium sandwich complexes of cross-π-conjugated fulvenes. Structural and theoretical analysis revealed that a fulvene sandwich framework holds a metal-metal bonded moiety, where the dinuclear and trinuclear bonds feature strong donation and back-donation, respectively. The trinuclear fulvene sandwich complex undergoes a unique reversible extrusion of a Pd atom from inside to outside the sandwich framework.

Emerging Trends in Cross-Coupling: Twelve-Electron-Based L1Pd(0) Catalysts, Their Mechanism of Action, and Selected Applications

Monoligated palladium(0) species, L₁Pd(0), have emerged as the most active catalytic species in the cross-coupling cycle. Today, there are methods available to generate the highly active but unstable L₁Pd(0) catalysts from stable precatalysts. While the size of the ligand plays an important role in the formation of L₁Pd(0) during in situ catalysis, the latter can be precisely generated from the precatalyst by various technologies. Computational, kinetic, and experimental studies indicate that all three steps in the catalytic cycle─oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination─contain monoligated Pd. The synthesis of precatalysts, their mode of activation, application studies in model systems, as well as in industry are discussed. Ligand parametrization and AI based data science can potentially help predict the facile formation of L₁Pd(0) species.

Discrete palladium clusters that consist of two mutually bisecting perpendicular planes

The construction of novel molecules with unprecedented alignments of the constituent elements has revolutionized the field of functional materials. The arrangement of two or more planar subunits in a mutually perpendicular fashion is a frequently encountered approach to produce novel functional materials. Previous examples of such materials can be categorized into two well-investigated families: spiro-conjugated and dumbbell-shaped structures, wherein the two planes are aligned orthogonally via a single atom or an axis, respectively. This article describes a third family: reaction of [Pd(CN^tBu)₂]₃ with Sn₃Me₈ or Ge₆Me₁₂ afforded a Pd₇Sn₄ cluster and a Pd₈Ge₆ cluster that consist of two mutually bisecting perpendicular planes. In the Pd₇Sn₄ cluster, the two equivalent Pd₅Sn₂ planes share three palladium atoms that include a dihedral angle of 85.6°.

The construction of Pd₇Sn₄ and Pd₈Ge₆ clusters that consist of two mutually bisecting perpendicular planes was accomplished by the reaction of [Pd(CN^tBu)₂]₃ with Me₃Sn–SnMe₂–SnMe₃ or Ge₆Me₁₂.

Salt-Enhanced Oxidative Addition of Iodobenzene to Pd: An Interplay Between Cation, Anion, and Pd-Pd Cooperative Effects

Halide salts facilitate the oxidative addition of organic halides to Pd(0). This phenomenon originates from a combination of anionic, cationic, and Pd-Pd cooperative effects. Exhaustive computational exploration at the density functional theory level of the complexes obtained from [Pd⁰(PPh₃)₂] and a salt (NMe₄Cl or LiCl) showed that chlorides promote phosphine release, leading to a mixture of mononuclear and dinuclear Pd(0) complexes. Anionic Pd(0) dinuclear complexes exhibit a cooperativity between Pd(0) centers, which favors the oxidative addition of iodobenzene. The higher activity of Pd(0) dimers toward oxidative addition rationalizes the previously reported kinetic laws. In the presence of Li⁺, the oxidative addition to mononuclear [Pd⁰L(Li₂Cl₂)] is estimated barrierless. LiCl coordination polarizes Pd(0), enlarging both the electrophilicity and the nucleophilicity of the complex, which promotes both coordination of the substrate and the subsequent insertion into the C-I bond. These conclusions are paving the way to the rational use of the salt effects in catalysis for the activation of more challenging bonds.

Bridging coordination of acenaphthylene to a Pd3 chain or a Pd4 sheet cluster

The coordination behaviour of multinuclear clusters to fused arene ligands is of continuous interest due to its relevance to metal catalysts supported by graphitic carbon materials. Herein, we report the bridging coordination behaviour of acenaphthylene to a Pd₃ or a Pd₄ cluster. A bis-acenaphthylene Pd₃ chain cluster and an acenaphthylene-COT Pd₄ sheet cluster were isolated, and the μ₃-π-coordination mode or the μ₄-oxidative π-addition mode of the acenaphthylene ligand in each cluster was elucidated by X-ray structure analysis.

Triangular Palladium Cluster from Activation of the Si-Si Bond in a Disilane with Phosphine Pendants

A disilane that contains two diphenylphosphino moieties, (Ph₂PCH₂)Ph₂Si-SiPh₂(CH₂PPh), was readily synthesized from the reaction of ClPh₂Si-SiPh₂Cl with (tmeda)Li(CH₂PPh₂). Treatment of the thus-obtained disilane with the palladium(0) precursor [Pd(CN^tBu)₂]₃ led to the exclusive formation of a trinuclear palladium cluster in which three palladium atoms are arranged in a triangular fashion. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the obtained triangular cluster revealed that novel silylphosphido chelating ligands were formed via a skeletal rearrangement of the ligand framework.

Nuclearity expansion in Pd clusters triggered by the migration of a phenyl group in cyclooligosilanes

Heptanuclear palladium clusters with six palladium atoms in a planar arrangement were obtained from the reaction of [Pd(CNtBu)2]3 with Ph-substituted cyclotetrasilane or cyclopentasilane via the migration of a phenyl group. The molecular structures of these clusters as well as those of two possible intermediates were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Heterometallic d8 -d10 Coupling of Rh(I) and M(0) (M=Pd, Pt) in a Sandwich Framework of π-Conjugated Ligands

A heterometallic M-M' bond formation is a key to construct atomically precise bimetallic clusters and materials. However, it is sometimes not straightforward to construct a heterometallic M-M' bond through conventional methods including redox condensation. Here, we found that a sandwich framework of π-conjugated unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands provides a unique coordination environment that facilitates unusual coupling of d⁸ Rh^I and d¹⁰ M⁰ (M=Pd, Pt). The molecular orbital analysis showed that the electron-accepting ability of the sandwich framework through back-donation allows the formation of a dσ-type Rh-Pd bond in a (d-d)¹⁸ electron system.

The anticancer activity of an air-stable Pd(I)-NHC (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) dimer

A new dinuclear Pd(i) complex coordinating two bis(NHC) ligands revealed an unsuspected stability despite the unsaturation of the two metal centres. Even more surprisingly, the compound showed high and selective antiproliferative activity against different cancer cell lines and ovarian cancer tumoroids, and the mechanism of action was different from that of cisplatin.

Catalysis with Palladium(I) Dimers

Dinuclear PdI complexes have found widespread applications as diverse catalysts for a multitude of transformations. Initially their ability to function as pre-catalysts for low-coordinated Pd0 species was harnessed in cross-coupling. Such PdI dimers are inherently labile and relatively sensitive to oxygen. In recent years, more stable dinuclear PdI -PdI frameworks, which feature bench-stability and robustness towards nucleophiles as well as recoverability in reactions, were explored and shown to trigger privileged reactivities via dinuclear catalysis. This includes the predictable and substrate-independent, selective C-C and C-heteroatom bond formations of poly(pseudo)halogenated arenes as well as couplings of arenes with relatively weak nucleophiles, which would not engage in Pd0 /PdII catalysis. This Minireview highlights the use of dinuclear PdI  complexes as both pre-catalysts for the formation of highly active Pd0 and PdII -H species as well as direct dinuclear catalysts. Focus is set on the mechanistic intricacies, the speciation and the impacts on reactivity.

Palladium-Catalyzed Allyl-Allyl Reductive Coupling of Allylamines or Allylic Alcohols with H2 as Sole Reductant

Catalytic carbon-carbon bond formation building on reductive coupling is a powerful method for the preparation of organic compounds. The identification of environmentally benign reductants is key for establishing an efficient reductive coupling reaction. Herein an efficient strategy enabling H₂ as the sole reductant for the palladium-catalyzed allyl-allyl reductive coupling reaction is described. A wide range of allylamines and allylic alcohols as well as allylic ethers proceed smoothly to deliver the C-C coupling products under 1 atm of H₂. Kinetic studies suggested that the dinuclear palladium species was involved in the catalytic cycle.

Insertion of Ni(0) and Pd(0) precursors into the Si-Si bond of a disilane with two hypercoordinate silicon atoms

The activation of the silicon-silicon bond in disilane Ph2Si(μ-PzMe2)2SiPh2 (1), which possesses two five-coordinate silicon centers, was achieved by a reaction with Pd(0) or Ni(0) precursors of modest steric demand to afford a dinuclear Pd complex (2) or two types of mononuclear Ni complexes (3 and 4), respectively.

Thiophene and Selenophene Binding at a Pd3 Cluster Site

We report the triply bridging coordination of thiophene and selenophene to a trinuclear metal cluster site. The triply bridging coordination of selenophene at a Pd₃ site forms a unique spiro-type Pd₅ cluster. Furthermore, either thiophene or selenophene is accommodated stably at a Pd₃ site supported by a backside μ₃ -cyclooctatetraene ligand through the face-capping μ₃ -coordination. The Pd₃ site supported by the cyclooctatetraene ligand showed higher binding affinity of benzene over thiophene, although a Pd₂ site strongly favors thiophene over benzene.

Recent advances of dinuclear nickel- and palladium-complexes in homogeneous catalysis

In this highlight, we provide a current perspective of synthetic methodology development catalyzed by dinuclear Ni- and Pd-complexes in the past decade. The new catalytic reactivities of dinuclear Ni- and Pd-complexes are discussed.

Exceeding Metal Capacity in Sandwich Complexes: Ligand-Unsupported Docking of Extra Metal Moieties at Edges of a Metal Sheet Sandwich Complex

The ligand-unsupported accommodation of extra metal moieties in a sandwich complex is reported. Although it has been considered that the metal-capacity of a metal sheet sandwich complex is strictly limited by the size of cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon ligands, the M-M edge bonds in a metal sheet sandwich complex provide a ligand-unsupported docking site for extra metal moieties, allowing expansion of metal-capacity in sandwich complexes. The metal sheet sandwich complex [Pd₄ (μ₄ -C₈ H₈ )(μ₄ -C₉ H₉ )]⁺ , in which the ligand-based metal capacity is full in terms of the usage of all C=C moieties of the smaller carbocyclic ligand C₈ H₈ in coordination, can accommodate extra M⁰ {P(OPh)₃ }₂ (M=Pd, Pt) moieties without coordinative assistance by either the C₉ H₉ or the C₈ H₈ ligand.

Formation of Transient Anionic Metal Clusters in Palladium/Diene-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

Despite their considerable practical value, palladium/1,3-diene-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between Grignard reagents RMgCl and alkyl halides AlkylX remain mechanistically poorly understood. Herein, we probe the intermediates formed in these reactions by a combination of electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy. According to our results and in line with previous hypotheses, the first step of the catalytic cycle brings about transmetalation to afford organopalladate anions. These organopalladate anions apparently undergo SN 2-type reactions with the AlkylX coupling partner. The resulting neutral complexes then release the cross-coupling products by reductive elimination. In gas-phase fragmentation experiments, the occurrence of reductive eliminations was observed for anionic analogues of the neutral complexes. Although the actual catalytic cycle is supposed to involve chiefly mononuclear palladium species, anionic palladium nanoclusters [Pdn R(DE)n ]- , (n=2, 4, 6; DE=diene) were also observed. At short reaction times, the dinuclear complexes usually predominated, whereas at longer times the tetra- and hexanuclear clusters became relatively more abundant. In parallel, the formation of palladium black pointed to continued aggregation processes. Thus, the present study directly shows dynamic behavior of the palladium/diene catalyst system and degradation of the active catalyst with increasing reaction time.

Mono- and hexa-palladium doped silver nanoclusters stabilized by dithiolates

The synthesis, via a co-reduction method, of the first Pd-containing silver-rich 21-metal-atom nanocluster passivated by dithiolates, [PdAg20{S2P(OnPr)2}12] (1), is reported. 1 is an 8 electron superatom isoelectronic to [Ag21{S2P(OiPr)2}12]+. The doping of Pd in 1 leads to its high stability against degradation in solution and shows red emission in MeTHF at 77 K. In addition, we report the X-ray crystal structure of a multi-palladium doped silver nanocluster, [Pd6Ag14(S){S2P(OnPr)2}12] (2), for the first time. Its X-ray structure exhibits a sulfide-centered Pd6Ag2 rhombohedron surrounded by twelve additional silver atoms with S6 symmetry. The XPS study and DFT calculations indicate that 2 contains Pd(0) and Ag(i) metals. A significant decrease in the electrochemical gap was observed in the SWVs of 2.

Dimensionality Expansion of a Butterfly Shaped Pd4 Framework: Constructing Edge-Sharing Pd6 Tetrahedra

The construction of well-defined transition-metal clusters has attracted substantial attention due to their unique chemical and/or physical properties. Metal clusters with 1D or 2D structures are now accessible by template-synthesis methods, in which multiple metal atoms are arranged with the aid of template molecules and their 1D or 2D structures. However, the rational synthesis of 3D clusters remains challenging, mostly due to a lack of appropriate template molecules. Herein, we report the rational synthesis of a 2D butterfly shaped Pd₄ framework (2) and 3D edge-sharing Pd₆ tetrahedra (5) by treatment of easily available organosilicon compounds with Pd(CNtBu)₂ . The diphenylsilylene moiety thereby serves as the key component to generate the butterfly structure of the Pd₄ clusters in 2. A dimensionality expansion, induced by two Cl atoms, of two butterfly shaped Pd₄ subunits supported by two diphenylsilylene moieties afforded the edge-sharing tetrahedral architecture of the Pd₆ cluster in 5.

Photo-induced translocation of a Pdn moiety (n = 2, 7) on a conjugated polyene ligand

The Pd₂-translocation on a tetraene ligand is switchable between the thermodynamic equilibrium state and the photo-stationary state. The Pd₇-translocation on a carotene ligand proceeds smoothly under photo-irradiation.

Three-Dimensional Sandwich Nanocubes Composed of 13-Atom Palladium Core and Hexakis-Carbocycle Shell

Coordination of cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbons to transition metal generally gives bis-ligated sandwich complexes, which are a fundamental class of organometallic compounds. This sandwich structure may be extended to a higher-order three-dimensional one when more than two carbocyclic ligands surround an agglomerate of many transition metal atoms. Here, we report synthesis of three-dimensional sandwich nanocube compounds containing a close-packed transition metal cluster core. Reduction of a [Pd₃(μ₃-C₇H₇)₂]²⁺ with tetraarylborate under neat conditions afforded [Pd₁₃(μ₄-C₇H₇)₆]²⁺ containing a cuboctahedral Pd₁₃ core with an octahedral ligand-shell.

Site-Selective C-S Bond Formation at C-Br over C-OTf and C-Cl Enabled by an Air-Stable, Easily Recoverable, and Recyclable Palladium(I) Catalyst

This report widens the repertoire of emerging PdI catalysis to carbon-heteroatom, that is, C-S bond formation. While Pd0 -catalyzed protocols may suffer from the formation of poisonous sulfide-bound off-cycle intermediates and lack of selectivity, the mechanistically diverse PdI catalysis concept circumvents these challenges and allows for C-S bond formation (S-aryl and S-alkyl) of a wide range of aryl halides. Site-selective thiolations of C-Br sites in the presence of C-Cl and C-OTf were achieved in a general and a priori predictable fashion. Computational, spectroscopic, X-ray, and reactivity data support dinuclear PdI catalysis to be operative. Contrary to air-sensitive Pd0 , the active PdI species was easily recovered in the open atmosphere and subjected to multiple rounds of recycling.

NHC Pd(II) and Ag(I) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Activity in Three Types of C-C Coupling Reactions

Four bis-benzimidazolium salts, 1,4-bis[1'-(N-R-benzimidazoliumyl)methyl]-2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene 2X- (L 1 H 2 ·(PF 6 ) 2 : R = ethyl, X = PF6; L 2 H 2 ·Br 2 : R = picolyl, X = Br; L 3 H 2 ·Br 2 : R = benzyl, X = Br; and L 4 H 2 ·Br 2 : R = allyl, X = Br), and their three N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) Pd(II) and Ag(I) complexes, L 1 Pd 2 Cl 4 (1), L 2 Ag 2 Br 2 (2), and L 4 (AgBr) 2 (3), as well as one anionic complex L 3 H 2 ·(Ag 4 Br 8 ) 0.5 (4), have been synthesized and characterized. Complex 1 adopts a funnel-like type of structure, complex 2 adopts a cyclic structure, and complex 3 is an open structure. In the crystal packing of 1-4, one-dimensional polymeric chains and two-dimensional supramolecular layers are formed via intermolecular weak interactions, including hydrogen bonds, π-π interactions, and C-H···π contacts. The catalytic activities of NHC Pd(II) complex 1 in three types of C-C coupling reactions (Suzuki-Miyaura, Heck-Mizoroki, and Sonogashira reactions) were studied. The results show that this catalytic system is efficient for these C-C coupling reactions.

Dinuclear Nickel(I) and Palladium(I) Complexes for Highly Active Transformations of Organic Compounds

In typical catalytic organic transformations, transition metals in catalytically active complexes are present in their most stable valence states, such as palladium(0) and (II). However, some dimeric monovalent metal complexes can be stabilized by auxiliary ligands to form diamagnetic compounds with metal–metal bonding interactions. These diamagnetic compounds can act as catalysts while retaining their dimeric forms, split homolytically or heterolytically into monomeric forms, which usually have high activity, or in contrast, become completely deactivated as catalysts. Recently, many studies using group 10 metal complexes containing nickel and palladium have demonstrated that under specific conditions, the active forms of these catalyst precursors are not mononuclear zerovalent complexes, but instead dinuclear monovalent metal complexes. In this mini-review, we have surveyed the preparation, reactivity, and the catalytic processes of dinuclear nickel(I) and palladium(I) complexes, focusing on mechanistic insights into the precatalyst activation systems and the structure and behavior of nickel and palladium intermediates.

Bimodal coordination of fused arenes to a Pd3 cluster site

We report bimodal coordination of fused arenes to a Pd₃ cluster site. The oxidative π-addition mode of anthracene and tetracene as well as the π-coordination mode of triphenylene and fluoranthene were identified.
