Abstract
The impact of silicon as a functional ingredient in restructured meat (RM) on lipoprotein composition, metabolism, and oxidation on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) markers has never been studied. This study aims to evaluate the effect of silicon-enriched-meat consumption on lipidaemia, lipoprotein profile and metabolism, plasma arylesterase, and TBARS and their relationships with glycaemia, insulinaemia, and insulin-signaling markers in late-stage-T2DM rats fed a high-saturated-fat-high-cholesterol (HSFHC) diet. Saturated-fat diets with or without added cholesterol were formulated by mixing a 70% purified diet with 30% freeze-dried RM with or without added silicon. Three groups of seven Wistar rats each were tested. The ED group received the control RM in the framework of a high-saturated-fat diet as early-stage T2DM control. The other two groups received streptozotocin-nicotinamide administration together with the HSFHC diet containing the control RM (LD) or silicon-enriched RM (LD-Si). Scores were created to define the diabetic trend and dyslipidaemia. The ED rats showed hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, and triglyceride-rich-VLDLs, suggesting they were in early-stage T2DM. LD rats presented hyperglycaemia, hypoinsulinaemia, and reduced HOMA-beta and insulin signaling markers typical of late-stage T2DM along with hypercholesterolaemia and high amounts of beta-VLDL, IDL, and LDL particles and low arylesterase activity. All these markers were significantly (p < 0.05) improved in LD-Si rats. The diabetic trend and diabetes dyslipidaemia scores showed a high and significant correlation (r = 0.595, p < 0.01). Silicon-enriched-meat consumption counterbalances the negative effects of HSFHC diets, functioning as an active hypolipemic, antioxidant, and antidiabetic dietary ingredient in a T2DM rat model, delaying the onset of late-stage diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Infection remains current as an important discussion topic in the etiological factors of atherosclerosis. Ischemic-modified albumin (IMA), galectin-3 (gal-3), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are biomolecules that play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Our aim is to investigate serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity in acute brucellosis infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with acute brucellosis and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. Serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity were analyzed by the ELISA method. RESULTS In acute brucellosis infection, serum gal-3, IMA, and MPO activities were found to be significantly increased compared to the control group, and PON-1 activity was found to be significantly decreased compared to the control group (p < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between serum IMA, and MPO activity (r = 0.707 p = 0.000) and a negative correlation (r = -0.943, p = 0.000) between PON-1 activity. There was a positive correlation between serum gal-3 and MPO activity (r = 0.683, p = 0.000) and IMA level (r = 0.927, p = 0.000) and a negative correlation between PON-1 activity (r = -0.951, p = 0.000).Conclusion, it was found that serum gal-3, IMA levels and MPO activity increased, while PON-1 activity decreased. These results showed that the oxidant-anti-oxidant balance is impaired in acute brucellosis infection. In addition, these results indicate that brucella infection may be increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Further studies are needed to support our findings.

Abstract
Background/Aim: Vitiligo is a prevalent inflammatory illness that can affect the skin and mucosal surfaces and is characterized by patchy loss of skin pigmentation. Paraoxonase1 (PON1) is an esterase enzyme with antioxidant properties that binds to high-density lipoproteins. We examined whether the PON1 gene Q192R polymorphism is a risk factor for vitiligo among Turkish people.
Methods: The study included 70 controls and 60 vitiligo cases. Polymerase chain reaction and the restriction fragment length polymorphism technique were used to genotype the PON1 gene Q192R polymorphism.
Results: PON1 gene Q192R genotype distribution was 66.7% QQ, 33.3% QR, and 0% RR in the vitiligo and 81.4% QQ, 18.6% QR, and 0% RR in the control (P = 0.05). When vitiligo patients were compared with controls, the prevalence of the PON1 QR genotype was substantially higher and was linked to a 2.19-fold greater risk of developing vitiligo (odds ratio: 2.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.97–4.91).
Conclusion: These findings imply that Q192R polymorphisms in the PON-1 gene may be linked to vitiligo in the Turkish population. The PON1 QR genotype may be a major genetic risk factor for vitiligo susceptibility and progression. Further studies with larger populations should more thoroughly clarify the association.

Abstract
AbstractHuman serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a critical antioxidant defence system against lipid oxidation. Decreased PON-1 activity has been associated with systemic oxidative stress in several disease states. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of plasma/serum concentrations of PON-1 in asthma, a chronic inflammatory airway disease. The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched from inception to February 2022. In total, 8 studies in 355 asthmatic patients and 289 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis. Serum PON-1 concentrations were significantly lower in asthmatic patients (SMD = −1.58, 95% CI −2.53 to −0.63; p = 0.001). The pooled SMD values were not substantially altered in sensitivity analysis. There was no publication bias. There were non-significant differences in PON-1 concentrations in patients with severe vs. mild-to-moderate asthma (SMD = − 0.39, 95% CI − 1.00 to 0.22, p = 0.21). Our meta-analysis has shown that serum PON-1 concentrations are significantly lower in patients with asthma, suggesting the presence of an impaired antioxidant defense in this group.

Abstract
Human serum paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a critical antioxidant defense system against lipid oxidation. Decreased PON-1 activity has been associated with systemic oxidative stress in several disease states. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of plasma/serum concentrations of PON-1 paraoxonase and arylesterase activity in psoriasis, a chronic immune-mediated and inflammatory skin disease. The electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to November 2021. In total, 14 studies in 691 psoriatic patients and 724 healthy controls were included in the meta-analysis. Serum paraoxonase activity was significantly lower in psoriatic patients (SMD = - 2.30, 95% CI - 3.17 to - 1.42; p < 0.001); however, no significant between-group differences were observed in serum arylesterase activity (SMD = - 0.34, 95% CI - 0.11 to 0.80; p = 0.14). The pooled SMD values were not substantially altered in sensitivity analysis. There was no publication bias. In conclusion, our meta-analysis has shown that serum paraoxonase, but not arylesterase, activity is significantly lower in psoriasis, suggesting an impaired antioxidant defense in these patients.

Abstract
The current gold standard for diagnosis of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) in the absence of myocardial diseases, whose clinical manifestation is microvascular angina (MVA), is reactivity testing using adenosine or acetylcholine during coronary angiography. This invasive test can be difficult to perform, expensive, and harmful. The identification of easily obtainable blood biomarkers which reflect the pathophysiology of CMD, characterized by high reliability, precision, accuracy, and accessibility may reduce risks and costs related to invasive procedures and even facilitate the screening and diagnosis of CMD. In this review, we summarized the results of several studies that have investigated the possible relationships between blood biomarkers involved with CMD and MVA. More specifically, we have divided the analyzed biomarkers into 3 different groups, according to the main mechanisms underlying CMD: biomarkers of "endothelial dysfunction," "vascular inflammation," and "oxidative stress." Finally, in the last section of the review, we consider mixed mechanisms and biomarkers which are not included in the 3 major categories mentioned above, but could be involved in the pathogenesis of CMD.

Abstract
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate hemogasometric and metabolic indicators in the first postpartum hours of dairy cows that received different cation-anion diets in the prepartum period. Holstein cows (n=14), multiparous, were divided into two groups: (1) acidogenic diet (DA -27.13 mEq/100 g of DM) (n=7) and (2) neutral diet (DN -3.25 mEq/100 g of DM) (n=7), provided from 30 days before the expected calving. Urine samples were collected every three days from the beginning of supplementation until the day of delivery for pH verification. Blood samples were collected at 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h postpartum for hemogasometric and biochemical analyses. The animals that received DA presented lower urinary pH. The serum concentration of total calcium, ionized calcium and the incidence of subclinical hypocalcemia did not differ between groups. Animals that received DA presented reduction in blood levels of total plasma proteins, globulins, bicarbonate and blood pH, in addition to increased activity of paraoxone-1 and reduction in the concentration of haptoglobin from animals of DN. In conclusion, we can infer that, anionic diets can alter blood pH, interfere with protein synthesis, and probably improve antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the associations between idiopathic recurrent early pregnancy loss (REPL) and paraoxonase-1 (PON1) polymorphisms and the activities of its encoded enzymes. Materials and Methods: Ninety-eight women were enrolled in this study, including 21 currently pregnant multiparous women without a history of miscarriage; 18 multiparous women who were not pregnant during the study; 30 women with a history of idiopathic REPL who were pregnant; and 29 who were not. Paraoxonase (PONase) and arylesterase (AREase) activities, two activities of the PON1 enzyme, were measured through commercially available kits (Relassay, Gaziantep, Turkey). PON1 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 19.0 (SPSS). Results: There was no association between idiopathic REPL and PON1 polymorphisms or PONase activity. The AREase activity of the PON1 enzyme trended higher in the healthy pregnant group than in the healthy nonpregnant group (p = 0.067), and was higher in the pregnant group with a history of idiopathic REPL than in the nonpregnant group with a history of idiopathic REPL (p = 0.041). Conclusions: Despite there being no detected association between PON1 activities or genotype and idiopathic REPL, we showed that AREase activity increased during early gestation. New studies, including longitudinal changes in serum AREase activity throughout normal pregnancy, should be carried out to further evaluate the association between PON encoded enzymatic activities and early gestational pathophysiology.

Abstract
Background:
Paraoxonase (PON; arilesterase, [EC 3.1.8.1]) is an enzyme from the group
arilesterases (ARE). This enzyme is capable of hydrolyzing paraoxone which is the active metabolite
of parathion, an organic phosphorus insecticide. PON activity was found to be low in individuals
prone to development of atherosclerosis such as diabetes, familial hypercholesterolemia and
kidney disorders. It was noted that PON enzyme activity decreases in relation to age increase in
adults. PON enzyme activity is approximately half of that in newborns and premature babies. Approximately
one year after birth, it reaches the adult level. It can be said that PON1 has significant
role on living organisms. For this reason, many studies on interactions of PON-drugs are needed.
</P><P>
Objective: In this article, our aim is to investigate in vitro effects of four pharmaceutically active
agents (fosfomycin, cefuroxime axetil, cefaclor monohydrate, and cefixime) which are often used in
patients after surgery on human serum paraoxanase-I (PON1) enzyme activity.
Methods:
In this article, we purify paraoxonase-I enzyme from human serum by using ammonium
sulfate precipitation (in the range of 60-80%), ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography. We
use electrophoresis to check the purity of the enzyme. We investigate the paraoxonase activity of
the enzyme at 412 nm the inhibition effects of the active substances. Paraoxone is used as the substrate.
Activity measurements arw made at different inhibitor concentrations related to inhibitor
studies and % Activity- [I] graphs are drawn for drug active substances. Lineweaver-Burk graphics
are used to determine the Ki constants. Finally, to determine the types of inhibition we interpret
these graphs.
Results:
The active agents used after surgery decreased the PON1 enzyme activity. They showed
different inhibition mechanism. The inhibition mechanism of fosfomycin and cefaclor monohydrate
was noncompetitive, cefixime was uncompetitive and cefuroxime axetil was a competitive inhibitor.
The IC50 values for fosfomycin, cefuroxime axetil, cefaclor monohydrate, and cefixime were
calculated to be 31.5 mM, 1.03 mM, 4.18 mM and 0.781 mM, respectively, and the Ki constants
were determined to be 27.98 ± 12.25 mM, 2.20 ± 0.22 mM, 4.81 ± 2.25 mM and 1.12 ± 0.32 mM,
respectively. The IC50 and Ki values showed that cefixime active agent has the maximum inhibition.
Conclusion:
In this study, we have detected that cefuroxime axetil inhibited competitively in vitro
paraoxonase activity of this enzyme. According to this information, we thought that cefuroxime
axetil linked to the active site of the enzyme. Fosfomycin and cefaclor monohydrate can be attached
with amino acids out of the active site of the enzyme because they inhibit enzyme noncompetitively.
Cefixime can be attached only to the enzyme-substrate complex because it inhibits enzyme
uncompetitively.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of the two Schiff base derivatives and their metal complexes were tested for MDA concentration, which is an indicator of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C levels in cell culture. A comparison was performed among the groups and it was observed that MDA, vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C concentrations were statistically changed. According to the results, all compounds caused a significant oxidative stress without Zn complexes. Moreover, Mn(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ni(II) complexes of Schiff bases derived from a condensation of 1,2-bis (p-aminophenoxy) ethane with naphthaldehydes and 4-methoxy benzaldehyde were examined in terms of antitumor activity against MCF-7 human breast cancer and L1210 murine leukemia cells. Furthermore, the derivatives were tested for antioxidative and prooxidative effects on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The compounds which were tested revealed that there was an antitumor activity for MCF-7 and L 1210 cancer cells. Also, some of the compounds induced oxidative harmful.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) are intricately involved in metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) pathophysiology. This study aimed to investigate PON1 and sICAM-1 plasma levels in addition to correlating them with adiposity, atherogenicity and hematological indices in T2DM and MetS. METHODS This cross-sectional study composed of 28 healthy lean subjects (control), 29 normoglycemic MetS subjects and 30 MetS-Pre/T2DM. RESULTS The sICAM-1 levels (ng/ml) were markedly higher in the pre/diabetic MetS group (828 ± 250.37 versus controls' 608.62 ± 184; p < 0.05). Conversely, PON1 levels (mlU/ml) were markedly lower in the pre/diabetic MetS group [252,700 (163,950, 362,800) versus controls' 394,900 (212,550, 469,350); p < 0.05]. sICAM-1 correlated directly with all adiposity indices [conicity index (CI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR) waist-to-height (WHtR) ratio, hip circumference (HC) and body adiposity index (BAI)] in addition to the atherogenicity index of plasma (AIP). PON1 correlated negatively and significantly with CI, WC, WHR, WHtR and HC but directly with lymphocyte. Significantly, a reciprocal sICAM-1-PON1 relationship was observed in the total population (r = -0.262, p = 0.015). CONCLUSION Utility of sICAM-1 and PON1 as surrogate prognostic biomarkers and putative therapeutic targets in the management of diabetes and MetS is strongly suggested.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Consumption of toxic species of mushrooms may have detrimental effects and increase oxidative stress. Paraoxonase, arylesterase and glutathione-S-transferase are antioxidants that resist oxidative stress. In this study, we analyzed the changes in these enzymes during intoxication due to mushrooms. METHODS The study enrolled 49 adult patients with a diagnosis of mushroom poisoning according to clinical findings and 49 healthy volunteers as the control group. The patients with mild clinical findings were hospitalized due to the possibility that the patient had also eaten the mushrooms and due to clinical findings in the late period, which could be fatal. Paraoxonase, arylesterase, and glutathione-S-transferase concentrations, as well as total antioxidant and oxidant status, were determined in the 49 patients and 49 healthy volunteers by taking blood samples in the emergency department. RESULTS While paraoxonase, arylesterase, and total antioxidant status were significantly decreased in the patient group (p<0.05), glutathione-S-transferase, total oxidant status and the oxidative stress index were significantly higher (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between the hospitalization time and the oxidative stress index (r=0.752, p<0.001), whereas a negative correlation was found with glutathione-S-transferase (r=-0.420, p=0.003). CONCLUSION We observed a significant decrease in paraoxonase and arylesterase and an increase in glutathione-S-transferase and oxidative stress indexes in patients with mushroom poisoning, indicating that these patients had an oxidative status. In particular, a low total antioxidant status and high oxidative stress index may gain importance in terms of the assessment of hospitalization duration.

Abstract
In this study, the effects of four novel mononuclear palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes on the activity of human serum paraoxanase1 were examined. First, four novel mononuclear palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes were synthesized with a nitrogen donor ligand 1-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs diclofenac, mefenamic acid. These complexes were characterized by spectroscopic, thermal, and elemental analyses. The crystal structures of complex [Pd(2-amepyr)2 ](dicl)2 1 and [Pd(2-amepyr)2 ](mef)2 3 were determined by X-ray crystallography. Then, paraoxonase1 enzyme was purified from human serum. The effects of these complexes on enzyme were evaluated in vitro. The complexes consist of the cationic unit and the counterions. The diclofenac and mefenamic acid acted as a counterion in the complexes. It was observed that all the complexes were stable up to high temperatures. These complexes, even at low doses, inhibited the activity of the enzyme with different inhibition mechanisms.

Abstract
High meat-product consumption has been related to cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, previous results suggest the benefits of consuming improved fat meat products on lipoprotein-cholesterol and anthropometric measurements. Present study aims to assess the effect of consuming different Pâté and Frankfurter formulations on emergent CVD biomarkers in male volunteers at increased CVD risk. Eighteen male volunteers with at least two CVD risk factors were enrolled in a sequentially controlled study where different pork-products were tested: reduced-fat (RF), omega-3-enriched-RF (n-3RF), and normal-fat (NF). Pork-products were consumed during 4-week periods separated by 4-week washout. The cardiometabolic index (CI), oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL), apolipoproteins (Apo) A1 and B, homocysteine (tHcys), arylesterase (AE), C-reactive Protein (CRP), tumor necrotic factor-alpha (TNFα), and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) were tested and some other related ratios calculated. AE, oxLDL and Lp(a), AE/HDLc, LDLc/Apo B, and AE/oxLDL rate of change were differently affected (P<0.01) by pork-products consumption. RF increased (P < 0.05) AE, AE/HDLc and AE/oxLDL ratios and decreased TNFα, tHcys; n-3RF increased (P < 0.001) AE, AE/HDLc and AE/oxLDL ratios and decreased (P < 0.05) Lp(a); while NF increased (P<0.05) oxLDL and Lp(a) levels. In conclusion, RF and n-3RF products affected positively the level of some emergent CVD markers. The high regular consumption of NF-products should be limited as significantly increased Lp(a) and oxLDL values. The high variability in response observed for some markers suggests the need to perform more studies to identify targets for RF- and n-3RF-products. Graphical Abstract Emergent CVD markers.

Abstract
Meat consumption is influenced by various kinds of factors, among them health implications. Different strategies can be effective in developing meat-based functional foods. These basically entail reducing the presence of compounds with negative health implications and enhancing the presence of beneficial compounds. This article reviews a comprehensive model for the development of meat-based functional foods based on a presentation of the research achieved in terms of the design and development of qualitatively and quantitatively modified meat products (frankfurters, patties and restructured steaks). These were reformulated to incorporate nutrients associated with three different seaweeds (wakame-Undaria pinnatifida; nori-Porphyra umbilicalis; and sea spaghetti-Himanthalia elongata) as sources of bioactive substances, while simultaneously reducing sodium and fat and improving fatty acid profiles. Those seaweeds were chosen, because in terms of composition and health implications, abundance on Spanish coasts, relatively widespread consumption, and suitability in terms of flavour and colour they are better suited than others for use as ingredients in new products. It also discusses the consequences of the use of this type of meat-based functional foods (combination of pork meat and 5% of each seaweed with or without hypercholesterolaemic agent included in the diets) on growing animals (Wistar male rats), and their effects on different aspects of lipoprotein metabolism, oxidative stress and liver structure. This article, then, reports a comprehensive approach to the production of seaweed-enriched meat products, considering aspects of technological development aimed at achieving the functional effect.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of acute exposure to various doses of diazinon, a widely used synthetic organophosphorus (OP) insecticide on plasma glucose, hepatic cells key enzymes of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis, and oxidative stress in rats. Diazinon was administered by gavage at doses of 15, 30 and 60 mg/kg. The liver was perfused and removed under anaesthesia. The activities of glycogen phosphorylase (GP), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were analysed in liver homogenate. Administration of diazinon (15, 30 and 60 mg/kg) increased plasma glucose concentrations by 101.43% (P=0.001), 103.68% (P=0.000) and 160.65% (P=0.000) of control, respectively. Diazinon (15, 30 and 60 mg/kg) increased hepatic GP activity by 43.5% (P=0.05), 70.3% (P=0.00) and 117.2% (P=0.02) of control, respectively. In addition, diazinon (30 and 60 mg/kg) increased hepatic PEPCK by 77.3% (P=0.000) and 93.5% (P=0.000) of control, respectively. Diazinon (30 and 60 mg/kg) decreased liver TAC by 38% (P=0.046) and 48% (P=0.000) of control, respectively. Also diazinon (30 and 60 mg/kg) increased hepatic cell liver lipid peroxidation by 77% (P=0.05) and 280% (P=0.000) of control. The correlations between plasma glucose and hepatic cells TBARS (r2=0.537, P=0.02), between plasma glucose and ChE activity (r2=0.81, P=0.049) and between plasma glucose and hepatic cells GP activity (r2=0.833, P=0.04) were significant. It is concluded that the liver cells are a site of toxic action of diazinon. Diazinon increases glucose release from liver into blood through activation of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis as a detoxication non-cholinergic mechanism to overwhelm diazinon-induced toxic stress. The results are in accordance with the hypothesis that OPs are a predisposing factor of diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate paraoxonase (PON) and arylesterase (ARES) enzyme activity in adults with vitamin B12 deficiency, and specific changes in the activities of these enzymes following vitamin B12 treatment. METHODS A total of 46 patients with vitamin B12 deficiency (aged 18-82 years) and 45 healthy volunteer controls (aged 19-64 years) participated in this study. Venous blood samples were collected, and serum vitamin B12, homocysteine (HCY), methylmalonic acid, PON1, and ARES levels were measured. RESULTS Paired comparison showed that pre- and post-treatment values for PON and ARES were similar between patients and controls (both P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant relationship between patients' pre-/post-treatment PON or HCY levels and serum vitamin B12 levels, compared with those of the control group (P > 0.05). DISCUSSION The results of the present study do not support the hypothesis that the antioxidant enzymes PON and ARES have an underlying role in vitamin B12 deficiency and related hyperhomocysteinemia. Our findings suggest that PON and ARES do not play a role in the systemic effects of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Abstract
Paraoxonase-1, a high-density lipoprotein linked enzyme complex, was shown to be decreased in several cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to explore whether serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities differ in dipper and non-dipper prehypertensive subjects compared to healthy controls.Sixty prehypertensive subjects and 30 controls were enrolled. All subjects underwent echocardiographic assessment and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). According to the blood pressure (BP) course on ABPM, prehypertensive subjects were categorized into two: non-dipper prehypertensive (NDPH) and dipper prehypertensive (DPH) groups. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were detected spectrophotometrically.Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in patients with NDPH compared to both DPH and control groups. Both paraoxonase and arylesterase activities showed significant negative correlations with BP and left ventricular mass index.We have demonstrated that NDPH subjects have lower paraoxonase and arylesterase activities compared to DPH subjects and normotensives. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify the role of paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in the development of overt hypertension in prehypertensive subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the effects of pneumoperitoneum on lung mechanics, end-tidal CO2 (ETCO2), arterial blood gases (ABG), and oxidative stress markers in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) by using lung-protective ventilation strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-six patients undergoing LC and abdominal wall hernia (AWH) surgery were assigned into 2 groups. Measurements and blood samples were obtained before, during pneumoperitoneum, and at the end of surgery. BALF samples were obtained after anesthesia induction and at the end of surgery. RESULTS Peak inspiratory pressure, ETCO2, and pCO2 values at the 30th minute were significantly increased, while there was a significant decrease in dynamic lung compliance, pH, and pO2 values in LC group. In BALF samples, total oxidant status (TOS), arylesterase, paraoxonase, and malondialdehyde levels were significantly increased; the glutathione peroxidase levels were significantly decreased in LC group. The serum levels of TOS and paraoxonase were significantly higher at the end of surgery in LC group. In addition, arylesterase level in the 30th minute was increased compared to baseline. Serum paraoxonase level at the end of surgery was significantly increased when compared to AWH group. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed negative effects of pneumoperitoneum in both lung and systemic levels despite lung-protective ventilation strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Warts are abnormal skin growths caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infections within the skin of patients. Genital warts usually appear in the perianal and perigenital regions. Asymptomatic warts may be activated after years and may damage natural immunity. The inflammation that occurs during this process may lead to an imbalance between the prooxidant and the antioxidant systems. The aim of this study was to investigate erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, serum paraoxonase enzyme levels, and oxidative stress levels in patients with genital warts. PATIENTS AND METHODS In total, 32 patients with genital warts and 35 healthy subjects were included in this study. Erythrocyte GSH-Px activity, serum catalase activity, and paraoxonase enzyme, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined. RESULTS Erythrocyte GSH-Px activity, serum MDA levels, and catalase activity were significantly higher in patients with genital warts than in controls (P < 0.01, P < 0.05, and P < 0.05, respectively). However, serum paraoxonase enzyme levels were not significantly different between groups (P > 0.05). Serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in patients with genital warts than in controls (P < 0.01). However, there were no statistically significant differences between groups with respect to total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that oxidative stress is increased in genital warts. Increased oxidative stress levels may contribute to the pathogenesis of genital warts, and prolonged HPV infection due to chronic inflammation could also affect oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. This study was to investigate the levels of serum paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARYL), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and sulfhydryl (-SH) in the treatment of COP, and to further understand the pathophysiology of COP. METHODS This prospective study comprised 107 individuals with COP (group 1) and 50 healthy volunteers (group 2). Serum, plasma, and erythrocyte samples were taken on admission from all participants with COP. This process was repeated in the 90(th) and 180(th) minutes of treatment. Samples were taken from the control group only once. The levels of plasma PON, ARYL, Cp activity and -SH were measured in both groups. RESULTS Age, gender, and carboxyhemoglobin level were not correlated with PON, ARYL, Cp, and -SH levels. PON, ARYL, and -SH levels were significantly decreased in group 1 compared with group 2. Conversely, Cp was significantly elevated in group 1 in contrast to group 2. Although ARYL was lower on admission in patients with COP than that was observed in the 90(th) and 180(th) minutes (P<0.001), Cp was higher on admission than at the other time points (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Participants with COP had decreased levels of antioxidants (PON, ARLY, and -SH). COP represses the antioxidant system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intraperitoneal spread of gynecologic cancers is a major cause of mortality and morbidity and often presents with malignant ascites. Microscopic tumor spread can be demonstrated by a peritoneal wash cytology and help assess the prognosis of the disease. In our study, the roles of paraoxonase and ceruloplasmin, measured in peritoneal washing fluid of patients operated for gynecologic pathologies in differential diagnosis was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients operated for malign or benign gynecologic pathologies in Antalya Education and Research Hospital Gynecology Clinic between 2010-2012 were included in the study. Samples were obtained during surgery. RESULTS A statistically significant difference was detected between patients with benign and malign diseases with regards to PON1 levels measured in peritoneal washing fluid (p:0.044), the average values being 64.2±30.8 (Range 10.8-187.2) and 41.4±21.4 (Range 10.4-95.5), respectively. No significant variation was evident for ceruloplasmin. CONCLUSIONS Paraoxonase levels measured in peritoneal washing fluid may contribute to the differentiation of malign-benign diseases in gynecologic pathologies.

Abstract
There is a general assumption that seaweeds are hypocholesterolemics and antioxidants. However, controversial results suggest specific properties for each individual alga. This study aims to assess the effect of including Sea Spaghetti alga (S) in a restructured-pork (RP) diet, both enriched and not enriched with dietary cholesterol, on arylesterase (AE) activity and lipoprotein concentration and composition of Wistar rats. Four groups of 10 growing male Wistar rats were each fed a mix of 85% AIN-93M diet and 15% freeze-dried RP for 5 weeks. The control group (C) consumed control RP-C; the S group consumed RP-S with 5% seaweeds; the Chol-C group consumed the C diet but enriched with cholesterol (2.43%) and cholic acid (0.49%); the Chol-S group consumed the S diet but enriched with cholesterol and cholic acid. AE activity was five times higher (P<.01) in S compared with C rats, but three times lower in Chol-S compared with Chol-C rats (P<.01). The Chol-C diet induced hypercholesterolemia but reduced triglycerides (TG), giving rise to the presence of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) that was enriched in cholesterol. The Chol-S diet partially blocked (P<.001) the hypercholesterolemic induction of the Chol-C diet, and reduced TG levels (P<.05) with respect to S rats. The cholesterol supplementation increased total cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, and intermediate-density lipoprotein+LDL-cholesterol (IDL+LDL)-cholesterol (P<.001) in Chol-C rats, but the effect was lower in the Chol-S diet. In conclusion, RP-S increases the antioxidant capacity within a noncholesterol enriched diet while improving the lipoprotein profile within a cholesterol-enriched diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several studies have indicated that recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is associated with oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase (PON) activity and oxidant/antioxidant status in patients with RAS. DESIGN AND METHODS Thirty-one patients with RAS and 31 healthy controls were enrolled. Serum PON1 and arylesterase activities, total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index were determined. RESULTS Serum total antioxidant capacity levels, PON1, and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in RAS than controls (P < 0.001), while total oxidant status levels and oxidative stress index were significantly higher (P < 0.001). PON1 activity had a significant correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol only (r = 0.482, P < 0.05), while there were no correlations with other lipids (P > 0.05) in patients with RAS. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that RAS is associated with decreased PON1 activity and increased oxidative stress that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of RAS. Further studies on a larger number of patients are needed to verify these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Snake bites are an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, especially in rural areas. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARLY), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) and total sulfhydryl group (-SH) levels in patients with snake venom poisoning. METHODS The study included 49 patients with snake bite envenomation (Group 1) and 39 healthy volunteers as the control group (Group 2). Plasma PON, ARLY, Cp, and MPO activity and LOOH and -SH levels were measured. Laboratory measurements of 20 patients with snake bite envenomation (Group 3) were performed again after treatment. RESULTS PON and ARLY activity and -SH levels were significantly decreased in Group 1 compared with those in Group 2. Cp and MPO activity and LOOH levels were significantly elevated in Group 1 compared with those in Group 2. PON and ARLY activity were significantly elevated in Group 3 compared with those in Group 1. Cp and MPO activity and LOOH levels were significantly decreased in Group 3 compared with those in Group 1. CONCLUSIONS Patients with snake bite envenomation had increased oxidants (MPO and LOOH) and decreased antioxidants (PON, ARLY, and -SH). Results obtained in this study demonstrate that snake bites are associated with a shift to oxidative status. Therapy with antioxidants can lead to an increase in the antioxidant defense system, and thus improvements in clinical symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous studies have suggested that oxidative stress may play an important role in the pathogenesis of alopecia areata (AA) but these reports are limited and conflicting. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity and oxidative status in subjects with AA. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-nine subjects with AA and 39 healthy controls were enrolled. Serum PON1 activity, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) were determined. RESULTS Serum TAC levels and PON1 activity were significantly lower in the subjects with AA than controls (p = 0.038, p = 0.001, respectively), whereas TOS levels and OSI were significantly higher (both, p = 0.001) in the subjects with AA. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that reduced PON1 activity may be related to increased oxidant and decreased antioxidant levels. These data indicated that oxidant/antioxidant imbalance may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of AA.

BACKGROUND The hepatitis B virus is a significant pathogen that causes cirrhosis, and hepatocellular cancer as a result of the damage it causes to liver cells. Its infection affects more than 400 million people globally. Although there is an effective vaccine and treatment methods, almost 1, 000, 000 people die every year. OBJECTIVE To investigate paraoxonase and arylesterase activities along with oxidative status parameters and serum lipid levels, and to find out if there is any increased susceptibility to atherogenesis. METHODS Thirty-four subjects with chronic hepatitis B and 39 healthy subjects as control were enrolled in the study. Age, body mass index and gender, Serum Triglycerides (TG), High-density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low-Density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, serum paraoxonase-1 and arylesterase activities were determined. Oxidative and antioxidative statuses were evaluated by measuring serum-free sulfhydryl groups, lipid hydroperoxide levels, total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index. RESULTS Serum TG and LDL levels were higher while serum HDL levels were lower in patients with chronic hepatitis B than in controls but the differences did not reach statistical significance. Serum paraoxonase-1 and arylesterase activities, plasma free sulfhydryl groups, and total antioxidant capacity were significantly lower in patients than in controls (p=0.018, p=0.005, p<0.001, p=0.037 respectively), while lipid hydroperoxide, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index were significantly higher (for all p<0.001). CONCLUSION The diminution in the paraoxonase-1 and arylesterase activities could contribute to the accelerated development of atherosclerosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Abstract
Paraoxonase-1 is an esterase enzyme and it has 3 types of activity, namely paraoxonase, arylesterase, and diazoxonase. It has been reported that paraoxonase-1 deficiency is related to increased susceptibility to development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in children with iron deficiency anemia and vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia. Thirty children with iron deficiency anemia, 30 children with vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia, and 40 healthy children aged 6 months to 6 years were enrolled in this study. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured with a spectrophotometer by using commercially available kits. Mean paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia group (103 ± 73 and 102 ± 41 U/L, respectively) were significantly lower than mean activities of control group (188 ± 100 and 147 ± 34 U/L, respectively; P < .001 for both) and iron deficiency anemia group (165 ± 103 and 138 ± 39 U/L, respectively; P < .05, P < .001), whereas there were no significant differences between iron deficiency anemia and control groups (P > .05). Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities significantly increased after treatment with vitamin B(12) in vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia; however, there were no significant changes in the activities of these enzymes after iron treatment in iron deficiency anemia group. Important correlations were found between vitamin B(12) levels and both paraoxonase and arylesterase activities (r = .367, P < .001; r = .445, P < .001). Our results suggest that vitamin B(12) deficiency anemia causes important reductions in paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and after vitamin B(12) therapy the activities of these enzymes returned to near-normal levels.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the activity of paraoxonase and arylesterase enzymes in various clinical forms of hepatitis B infection and to investigate the correlation between these parameters and chronic disease course/fibrosis. Overall, 40 patients diagnosed as hepatitis B carriers (CIHBV), 40 chronic active hepatitis B (CAHBV) patients, and 40 healthy adults (control group) between 18 and 65 years of age were enrolled the study. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. Their activities were significantly lower in patients with CAHBV compared with CIHBV patients or with control group patients (P<0.001). There was a negative correlation between alanine aminotransferase levels and the activity of paraoxonase and arylesterase (r = -0.38, P = 0.001 and r = -0.28, P = 0.002, respectively). A statistically significant negative correlation was found between arylesterase activity in the sera of CAHBV patients and HBV DNA levels (ρ = -0.33, P = 0.03). On the contrary, no correlation was found between paraoxonase levels and HBV DNA levels (P>0.05). The histology activity index of CAHBV patients did not correlate with paraoxonase and arylesterase activities (P>0.05). In light of these findings, it may be assumed that during the progression of an inactive hepatitis B carrier to being actively infected, reduced paraoxonase and arylesterase activities may be observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease associated with metabolic syndrome, which is made up of a cluster of disorders, including obesity, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase-1 activities and oxidative status parameters in patients with plaque-type psoriasis with or without metabolic syndrome. METHODS In this study, patients with plaque-type psoriasis with (n=25) or without (n=27) metabolic syndrome, according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), were matched for age and sex to an equally sized control group (n=25). RESULTS In patients without metabolic syndrome, serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities showed mean decreases of 29 and 6%, respectively, whereas in patients with metabolic syndrome, the mean decreases in the enzymes' activities were 35 and 11%, respectively, compared with those in the control group. Serum total antioxidant capacity and total oxidant status were not statistically significant in any of the three groups. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that HDL cholesterol and log-transformed triglyceride were independent variables for serum arylesterase activity and that fasting glucose and diastolic blood pressure were independent variables for serum paraoxonase activity. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that according to the criteria of the IDF, the significant decrease observed in serum paraoxonase activity was independent of the metabolic syndrome in patients with mild-to-moderate plaque-type psoriasis, whereas the significant decrease in serum arylesterase activity was associated with the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein (Apo) A5 is a protein involved in the activation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and the metabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins. LPL plays a major role in the metabolism of TG-rich lipoproteins, and placental LPL activity is known to correlate positively with foetal fat deposition and size. We examine the association between the common APOA5 S19W polymorphism and neonatal anthropometrical measurements, lipoprotein and hormone concentrations, and insulin sensitivity in 58 normal weight Caucasian newborns from the Mérida cohort. Neonates with the W allele displayed lower BMI (P < 0.001), ponderal index (P < 0.001), birth weight (P < 0.01), insulin levels (P < 0.05), the insulin/cortisol ratio (P < 0.05), HOMA-R (P < 0.05) and Apo B values (P < 0.01), but higher oxidised LDL (LDLox) values and a higher LDLox/low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ratio (both P < 0.05) than S-homozygous newborns. The APOA5 S19W polymorphism was associated with foetal growth as well as with glucose and lipoprotein metabolism in the neonates. Concurrence of the S19W polymorphism in neonates and their mothers did not affect neonatal lipid and lipoprotein concentrations but was associated with impaired foetal growth. Specifically, W allele carriers displayed a higher degree of LDL oxidation and lower body weight, plasma insulin values, insulin/cortisol ratio and Apo B concentrations than homozygotes for the common S allele. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the W allele carriers received a less optimal nutrition during gestation and that their lipoprotein antioxidant status was inferior to that of their homozygous S allele counterparts.

Abstract
Some seaweeds exert antioxidant and hypocholesterolaemic properties. The effects of diets including restructured meats (RM) containing Wakame (W) or Nori (N) algae on arylesterase (AE) activity and lipoprotein concentration and composition were tested. In the present study, six groups of ten male growing Wistar rats each were fed a mix of 85 % AIN-93M diet and 15 % freeze-dried RM for 35 d. The control group (C) consumed control RM, the W and N groups consumed RM with 5 % W and 5 % N, respectively. The cholesterol-enriched C (CC), W (CW) and N (CN) groups consumed their corresponding basal diets with supplementary cholesterol (2·43 %) and cholic acid (0·49 %). Cholesterol in the diet induced lower (P < 0·001) growth ratios. Both W and N diets significantly increased AE activity. VLDL-cholesterol values were lower in N rats than in W rats. AE activity increased (P < 0·001) in CC and CW rats but not in CN rats compared with their corresponding counterparts. AE was lower (P < 0·05) in the CN group than in the CC and CW groups. The CN diet partially blocked (P < 0·001) the hypercholesterolaemic induction observed in CC and CW diets and reduced TAG levels (at least P < 0·05) with respect to those of CC rats. Although dietary cholesterol supplementation increased total cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol and (intermediate-density lipoprotein+LDL)-cholesterol (all P < 0·001) in all rats, the CN diet moderately improved the lipoprotein profile of hypercholesterolaemic rats. Changes in AE activity and plasma cholesterol in CN rats but not in CW rats suggest a possible relationship between the two parameters. It is concluded that inclusion of RM enriched with N may be used in hypercholesterolaemic diets to improve lipoprotein metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Cardiovascular risk depends largely on paraoxonase (PON-1) and apolipoprotein A4 (APOA4) gene polymorphisms. To compare the effects of consumption of walnut-enriched meat versus low-fat meat (LM) on selected soluble adhesion molecules and leukotrienes (LTB4). SUBJECTS/METHODS In all 22 subjects at increased cardiovascular risk were taken. It is a non-blinded, cross-over, placebo-controlled study. Two 5-week experimental periods separated by 4-6 week wash-out interval. Participants consumed walnut-enriched meat during one period and LM during the other. Diet characteristics, HDLc, Apo A1, paraoxonase, sVCAM-1, sICAM-1 and LTB4 were analysed. PON-1 55, PON-1 192 and APOA4 360 polymorphism effects were also assessed. RESULTS Individuals consuming walnut-enriched meat displayed higher paraoxonase activity (P<0.001), lower levels of sICAM and aVCAM (P=0.046, P=0.012, respectively) and leukotriene B4 (P=0.044), and lower paraoxonase-1/HDLc and paraoxonase-1/Apo A1 ratios (both, P<0.001) than those consuming LM. Paraoxonase levels correlated negatively with those of sICAM (r=-0.471, P<0.01). Significant decreases (at least P<0.05) were observed in sICAM concentrations in PON-1 55LM+MM, PON-1 QQ192 and APOA4-2 carriers while decreases in sVCAM in QR+RR and APOA4-1 carriers were observed. Paraoxonase-1/HDLc and paraoxonase-1/Apo A1 ratios were significantly influenced by paraoxonase polymorphisms. CONCLUSIONS Walnut-enriched meat appears as a functional meat as consumed in the framework of a mix diet lowered the concentration of some selected inflammatory chemoattractant biomarkers. This effect was largely influenced by PON-1 and Apo A4-360 polymorphisms.

Abstract
Background:In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between hydatidiform mole (HM) and paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity and phenotyping in comparison with healthy subjects (both pregnant and nonpregnant women).Methods:Eighty women were enrolled in this study. Of these, 26 had HM (group 1). Twenty-seven healthy women in the first trimester of pregnancy with a single viable fetus were included in the study as control subjects (group 2). The remaining 27 subjects were healthy nonpregnant women who also participated as control subjects (group 3). Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured using commercially available kits (Relassay, Gaziantep, Turkey). Paraoxonase activity measurements were performed both in the absence (basal activity) and presence of NaCl (salt-stimulated activity). The phenotype distribution of PON1 activity was determined by the double-substrate method.Results:Basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were not significantly different between the HM, healthy pregnant control, and healthy nonpregnant control groups. Hence, PON1 phenotype distribution of the subjects was not significantly different between these 3 groups.Conclusions:We determined no association between HM (complete or partial) and PON1 activity and phenotyping in comparison with pregnant and nonpregnant healthy subjects. Further studies including metastatic or invasive HM are needed.

Abstract
Inclusion of biophenols in traditional foods transforms them into functional foods that may help to decrease CVD risk. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the consumption of hydroxytyrosol-enriched sunflower oil (HSO) improves certain CVD biomarker values. A total of twenty-two healthy volunteers participated in a cross-over study involving two 3-week periods, separated by a 2-week washout period, in which volunteers consumed 10–15 g/d of either HSO (45–50 mg/d of hydroxytyrosol) or non-enriched (control) sunflower oil. Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, arylesterase activity, oxidised LDL and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule (sVCAM-1) levels were measured in the plasma obtained at the beginning and at the end of each treatment period. The HSO group displayed a significantly higher level (P < 0·01) of arylesterase activity and significantly lower levels of oxidised LDL and sVCAM-1 (bothP < 0·05) than the control group. These results suggest that HSO may help prevent CVD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard for the treatment of gallstone disease; however, adverse hemodynamic changes induced by increased intraabdominal pressure due to pneumoperitoneum are known to occur. Herein, we investigated the effects of pneumoperitoneum on oxidative stress markers, including paraoxonase, arylesterase, total oxidant status, and total antioxidant status, during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients that underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy were classified as Group I, whereas patients that underwent surgical procedures for an abdominal wall hernia under general anesthesia were classified as Group II. Blood samples were obtained during the preoperative period, the perioperative period, and 24 hours after surgery (postoperative day 1). Leukocyte counts, neutrophil rates, paraoxonase activities, arylesterase activities, and total oxidant and antioxidant status levels were measured. RESULTS The differences in leukocyte counts and neutrophil rates were not significant between the two groups. In Group I, no significant differences in the total oxidant and antioxidant status levels were identified; however, paraoxonase and arylesterase levels were lower on postoperative day 1. No significant changes were observed in the total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, and paraoxonase or arylesterase activities in Group II. The perioperative total antioxidant status and arylesterase level were higher in Group I in comparison to Group II. CONCLUSION Paraoxonase and arylesterase levels are useful markers in the evaluation of oxidative stress caused by intraabdominal pressure due to pneumoperitoneum.

Abstract
High postprandial lipaemia increases cardiovascular risk. Algae consumption may affect postprandial lipoproteinaemia. The effects of dietary alga and cholesterol supplementation on postprandial lipaemia and lipoproteinaemia and arylesterase (AE) activity in growing male Wistar rats were tested in the present study. Six groups of ten rats were fed a casein-based diet for 3 weeks. Three of the diets contained 2.4 % cholesterol-raising agent (Chol), while the other three did not (NChol). Seven percentage of the control diets (NChol-C and Chol-C) consisted of a cellulose-wheat starch mix (35:65), while the Nori alga diets (NChol-N and Chol-N) and Konbu diets (NChol-K and Chol-K) contained 7 % of each respective freeze-dried alga. Postprandial plasma was obtained after a 3 h diet withdrawal. Supplementary cholesterol and alga type significantly affected (at least P < 0.05) the cholesterol, TAG, phospholipid and protein contents of the various lipoprotein fractions. AE enzyme activity increased (P < 0.05) in NChol rats given Nori and Konbu diets. NChol-K, but not NChol-N, rats displayed higher (P < 0.05) plasma cholesterol, TAG and phospholipid levels than NChol-C animals. NChol-K rats presented higher TAG, phospholipid, protein and lipoprotein mass values than their NChol-C counterparts. Inclusion of algae in Chol diets decreased (P < 0.001) the postprandial hypertriacylglycerolaemia. The Chol-N diet affected most lipoprotein fraction contents. Chol-N rats had lower postprandial cholesterolaemia and a better lipoprotein profile (fewer LDL and a tendency toward more HDL and fewer cholesterol-enriched VLDL) than Chol-K rats, suggesting that Nori is the alga of choice in dietary treatment of hypercholesterolaemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase, arlyesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and LOOH levels were assessed for GDM cases (n = 55) and controls (n = 59). Serum basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. LOOH levels were measured by ferrous oxidation with a xylenol orange assay. RESULTS Basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower (p = 0.002, p = 0.004; and p = 0.013, respectively) in patients with GDM compared to controls, while LOOH levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). Among gestational diabetes patients, serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were inversely correlated with LOOH levels (r = - 0.390, p = 0.003; and r = - 0.287, p = 0.034, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Findings of the present study have shown that serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities are significantly reduced in women with GDM. Decreased serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities might play a role in the potential early pathogenesis for atherosclerotic heart disease in GDM beyond their antioxidant properties.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to study paraoxonase and arylesterase activities along with oxidative status parameters, and to find out whether there is any increased susceptibility to atherogenesis, which might be reflected with increased oxidative stress and decreased serum paraoxonase/arylesterase activity in beta-thalassemia major (BTM) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Eighty-seven patients with BTM and 33 healthy individuals were enrolled in the study. RESULTS Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in BTM patients than controls (for all P<0.0001), whereas total oxidant status, total peroxide concentration levels, and oxidative stress index were significantly higher (P<0.0001, <0.0001, and <0.001, respectively). Correlations were found between serum iron and ferritin and levels of total oxidant status in BTM patients. Significant correlation was found with serum total peroxide concentration levels and paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in patients with BTM. CONCLUSIONS It was seen that oxidative stress increases, while serum paraoxonase activity is decreased in BTM patients. Decrease in paraoxonase activity seems to be associated with both the degree of oxidative stress and anemia. BTM patients may be more prone to development of atherogenesis because of low serum paraoxonase/arylesterase activity.

Abstract
The sensitivity of standard biochemical tests for liver function is low and insufficient for a reliable determination of the presence or absence of liver disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels, and to find out that whether the measurement of serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities would be useful as an index of liver function status in chronic hepatitis (CH). Fourty-four patients with CH (24 CHB and 20 CHC) and 38 controls were enrolled. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were detected spectrophotometrically. LOOH levels were measured by the FOX-2 assay. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in patients with CH than controls (p < 0.001 for both), while LOOH levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were inversely correlated with LOOH levels (r = -0.394, p < 0.05; r =-0.362, p < 0.05, respectively). Fibrosis scores of CH patients were significantly correlated with paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and LOOH levels (r =-0.276, p < 0.05; r = -0.583, p < 0.001 and r = 0.562, p < 0.001, respectively). Our results indicated that decrease in the activities paraoxonase and arylesterase may play a role in the pathogenesis of CH. In addition, serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities measurement may add a significant contribution to the liver function tests.
