Abstract
AIM We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of graft stent implantation in the endovascular treatment of vascular injuries in the craniocervical area. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was carried out through the retrospective screening of eight (two females and six males) patients' records. Patients who used graft stents as an endovascular method were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 43.6 years (with a range of 15-69 years). Due to different mechanisms, the patients had vascular injuries in the craniocervical region, and graft stent implantation was performed between 2010 and 2022. We evaluated patient demographics, admission symptoms, trauma mechanisms, angiographic findings, treatment modalities and materials, patient outcomes, and follow-up periods. RESULTS Due to iatrogenesis for four patients, penetrating trauma for three patients, and blunt trauma for one patient, injuries were present in the right internal carotid artery {ICA} (n=1), left ICA (n=1), left common carotid artery {CCA} (n=3), right CCA (n=1), right vertebral artery (n=1), and left vertebral artery (n=1). Angiographically, pseudoaneurysm was detected in seven patients, and vascular rupture was detected in one patient using contrast agent extravasation. All patients who underwent the endovascular method had technical success. Since bleeding from the external carotid artery branches was seen in two patients, these branches were embolized with coils. No radiologically or neurologically pathological findings were recorded during the follow-up period (with a range of one week to 12 years). CONCLUSION Graft stent use in the endovascular treatment of craniocervical vascular injuries is an operable, safe, and promising option, especially in patients with pseudoaneurysms and active bleeding.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Infra-inguinal vascular injuries (IIVI) are emergencies involving both functional and vital prognosis. The choice between saving the limb or doing a first-line amputation is difficult even for an experienced surgeon. The aims of this work are to analyze early outcomes in our center and to identify predictive factors for amputation. M METHODS Between 2010 and 2017, we reviewed retrospectively patients with IIVI. The main criteria for judgement were: primary, secondary and overall amputation. Two groups of potential risk factors of amputation were analyzed: Those related to the patient: age, shock, ISS score; those related to the lesion: mechanism, above or below the knee, bone lesions, venous lesions and skin decay. A univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to determine the risk factor(s) independently associated with the occurrence of amputation. RESULTS 57 IIVI were found in 54 patients. The mean ISS was 32,3 ± 21. A primary amputation was performed in 19%, and secondary in 14% of cases. Overall amputation rate was 35% (n=19). Multivariate analysis reveals that the ISS is the only predictor of primary (p=0.009; OR:1.07; CI:1.01-1.12) and global (p=0.04; OR:1.07; IC:1.02-1.13) amputation. A threshold value of 41 was selected as a primary amputation risk factor with a negative predictive value of 97%. CONCLUSIONS The ISS is a good predictor of the risk of amputation in IIVI. A threshold of 41 is an objective criterion helping to decide for a first-line amputation. Advanced age and hemodynamic instability should not be important in the decision tree.

Abstract
Vascular handlebar syndrome with blunt injury of the common femoral artery is a rare vascular trauma mechanism, with high possibility of being missed or delayed. We present two cases of vascular handlebar syndrome treated in our hospital and a systematic review of the literature using MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases. Literature review identified 20 similar cases. The median age of patients was 18 years, and in vast majority males in gender. In most cases, the common femoral artery injury was an intimal flap and lumen occlusion with intramural thrombosis followed by transection and intimal injury without occlusion or thrombosis. The median time between injury and diagnosis/treatment was half an hour. Clinical presentation ranged from asymptomatic to acute limb ischemia. The grade of acute ischemia was mostly Rutherford class I (n=14), while acute IIa (n=4), chronic ischemia (n=3), and no ischemia (n=1) were also noticed. The correct diagnosis was revealed by clinical examination only (n=1), or by the combination of clinical and imaging techniques including computed tomography angiography (n=7) and duplex ultrasonography (n=4) or both (n=10). Management of the handlebar trauma syndrome injuries was surgical in most cases. Outcome was favorable in all patients. Vascular handlebar syndrome is extremely rare and high suspicion is required for early diagnosis and definitive treatment, as the early management is effective and crucial for averting the devastating consequences. An individualized approach to the vascular trauma patient is to be applied with considerations taken to the age of the patient, the mechanism of the injury, the anatomy of the lesion, and symptomatology of the case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Outcomes after vascular injuries in wartime are well documented, but studies on vascular injuries in a civilian European populations are scarce. METHODS A retrospective study on all adults admitted to a North-European level 1-trauma centre 2009-2018 with The Abbreviated Injury Scale-codes for non-iatrogenic vascular trauma (VT). Data were extracted from both national and regional trauma-registries, as well as patient charts. Patient demographics, mechanism, and location of vascular injury were registered as well as its treatment. Incidence and injury scores (ISS, NISS and TRISS) were calculated and overall survival (Kaplan-Meier) estimated. RESULTS Of 4042 trauma-patients, 68 (1.7%) (median age 44 years, 76% males) sustained 81 vascular injuries (69 arterial; 12 venous); 46 blunt and 22 (32%) penetrating injuries. The total incidence of vascular injuries was 1.45/100,000 inhabitants and did not change over the study-period (95% confidence interval 1.13-1.82). The injuries were located in thorax (n = 17), neck (n = 16) and abdominal region (n = 15); most of the blunt injuries followed traffic (n = 31) or falling accidents (n = 10), and with 17 of the 22 penetrating injuries due to stabbing. The median ISS and NISS-scores were 22 and 33, with 50 (74%) and 55 (81%) patients having scores > 15, respectively. Forty-three (63%) patients had open surgical repair and 8 (12%) received endovascular treatment. Twenty-one patients died within 30-days (31%), 33% and 27% after blunt and penetrating injuries, respectively. Half of the patients that died within 24 h sustained aortic injury. CONCLUSIONS Traumatic vascular injuries are rare in civilian settings and are less than 2% of major trauma admissions. These patients are often seriously injured and their treatment can be challenging with high 30-day mortality. TRIAL REGISTRATION Retrospectively registered.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Vascular injuries lead to haemorrhagic shock and distal limb ischaemia, especially with an arterial injury. This life-threatening state mandates urgent evaluation and intervention to save life and limbs. The treatment aims to restore blood flow and replace lost blood within the golden hours, stabilising cardiovascular haemodynamics and averting irreversible ischaemic damage. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical profile of vascular injuries, management and outcomes in our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study covered the period from January 2015 to December 2021. Information of interest were extracted from the medical records of each participant. The results from the data analysis were presented in charts and tables. RESULTS Seventy-four patients aged 15-78 years (mean 32.30 ± 13.75 years) were included in this study. The male-to-female ratio was 3.6:1. The most common causes were gunshot injury, road traffic accident and iatrogenic injuries. The mean duration from injury to presentation was 9.85 h and mean duration from presentation to restoration of flow was 7.3 h. The most common injured artery was the femoral artery, whereas the most common vein was inferior vena cava. Primary vascular repair was done in majority of the cases. Amputation was performed in 18.9% with loss of viability of the limb. CONCLUSION Vascular injury though relatively uncommon remains a challenging and life-threatening disease predominantly in young adult males. Urgent intervention prevents limb loss and mortality. Favourable outcome is accomplished by improving emergency healthcare delivery and well-equipped vascular centres with adequately trained personnel in the nation's hospitals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vascular trauma is a complex and evolving area. Unlike internationally, the epidemiology of vascular trauma is not well documented in Australia; the most recent study was published in 2013. Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a level 1 trauma centre in Queensland, Australia. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology and outcomes of vascular trauma at a level 1 trauma centre, and compare these with the Australian and international literature. METHODS All individuals who presented to GCUH between January 2014 and December 2019 with vascular injury were retrieved from the GCUH prospective trauma database. A descriptive analysis was undertaken on this cohort. RESULTS The incidence of vascular trauma as a percentage of total trauma remained stable over the study period. The study included 5454 trauma admissions to GCUH, of which 213 sustained vascular injuries. Males were more likely to be injured and blunt trauma was more common than penetrating. Blunt trauma was associated with increased injury complexity. The mortality rate was 8.5% and 10 patients required amputation. CONCLUSIONS The proportion of vascular injuries as a percentage of total trauma in Australia is higher than in previous studies. Vascular trauma causes significant injuries and has a higher mortality rate than general trauma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Trauma-related vascular injuries are major contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide. We conducted a retrospective, population-based, cross-sectional study to examine temporal trends and factors associated with traumatic vascular injury-related in-hospital mortality in Ontario, Canada from 1991 to 2009. METHODS We obtained data on Ontario hospital admissions for traumatic vascular injury, including injury mechanism and body region; and patient age, sex, socioeconomic status, and residence from the Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database and Registered Persons Database from fiscal years 1991 to 2009. We performed time series analysis of vascular injury-related in-hospital mortality rates and multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify significant mortality-associated factors. RESULTS The overall in-hospital mortality rate for trauma-related vascular injury was 5.5%. A slight but non-significant decline in mortality occurred over time. The likelihood of vascular injury-related in-hospital mortality was significantly higher for patients involved in transport-related accidents (odds ratio [OR[=2.21, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.76-2.76), age ≥65 years (OR = 4.34, 95% CI, 2.25-8.38), or with thoracic (OR = 2.24, 95% CI, 1.56-3.20) or abdominal (OR = 2.45, 95% CI, 1.75-3.42) injuries. CONCLUSIONS In-hospital mortality from traumatic vascular injury in Ontario was low and stable from 1991 to 2009.

Abstract
PURPOSE Purpose of this study was to report the etiology, diagnosis, surgical management, and outcome of pseudoaneurysm associated with orthopedic trauma. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of all patients presenting to a Level 1 trauma center between 2013 and 2019. Clinical records were reviewed for the mechanism of primary injury, associated fracture pattern, time of presentation, site of involvement, etiology of the pseudoaneurysm, diagnosis, management, and complications. We identified 14 patients with pseudoaneurysm of peripheral arteries following orthopedic trauma. RESULTS The mean interval between primary injury and the manifestation of clinical symptoms was 88.5 days (range, 16-304 days). There were 3 upper limb injuries and 11 lower limb injuries. The presenting symptoms were pain associated with excessive extremity swelling in most of the patients. A significant drop in hemoglobin (mean fall- 2.9 g/dL) was noted in nine patients. Most common artery involved was the superficial branch of femoral artery and posterior tibial artery followed by the brachial artery. Fractured bone spike was the cause of injury in eight patients and iatrogenic injury in six patients. Diagnosis was confirmed by CT angiography with duplex scan in eight patients, duplex scan alone in one patient, MRI along with duplex scan in one patient. The remaining four patients were diagnosed intraoperatively. Excision of the pseudoaneurysm and ligation of the involved minor arteries was done in eight patients. Surgical repair of the major artery with critical vascular injury was done in six patients. One patient underwent secondary amputation following the anastomotic blowout. CONCLUSION Early diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm requires knowledge and a high index of suspicion. Surgical reconstruction of major arteries should always be done and ligation of major vessels can lead to catastrophes. Excision of pseudoaneurysm can be done when minor arteries are involved with the presence of good collateral circulation. LEVEL OF STUDY Level IV Study.

Abstract
Background: Morbidity, lesion pattern, management and short-term outcomes of civilian vascular trauma are rarely evaluated. Therefore, analysis of in hospital results in patients with non-iatrogenic vascular trauma in a tertiary referral hospital was performed. Patients and methods: Retrospective evaluation of patients with vascular trauma from 2007-2017 was done. 48 patients (34 male, 14 females, mean age 56 years) were included. Excluded were patients with iatrogenic vascular complications. Major cause of vascular trauma were traffic accidents in 43.8 %, fall from great heights in 27.1 %, sport and home related injuries in 16.8 %, suicidal injuries in 4.2 % and gunshot wounds in 2.1 % (other 6.3 %). 60.4 % of patients presented with blunt, 39.6 % of patients with penetrating vascular trauma. More than half of the cases included polytraumatized patients (54.4 %). Results: Most commonly affected were the popliteal (25.0 %) and the axillar artery (18.8 %). Aortic injuries were present in 14.6 % of cases, whereas the femoral and subclavian artery were involved in 12.6 % and 10.4 %. Vascular reconstruction was performed by interposition graft in 45.9 %, direct suture in 18.8 %, patchplasty in 10.4 %, ligation in 12.4 %, and implantation of stentgraft in 12.5 %. Postoperative complication rate was 54.2 %. Rate of in-hospital major amputation was 14.6 % and in-hospital mortality was 14.6 % as well. Comparison between blunt and penetrating trauma as to postoperative complication (p = 0.322), blood transfusion (p = 0.452) and amputation (p = 0.304) showed no significant differences, whereas lethality in blunt trauma was 20.6 % vs. 5.2 % in penetrating trauma. Injury severity score (ISS) was significantly elevated for blunt trauma patients (mean ISS Score blunt 32 vs 21 penetrating, p = 0.043). Conclusions: The majority of vascular lesions is caused by blunt trauma. Blunt lesions do also show a severe injury pattern, compared to penetrating trauma, and the complication rate remains high. However, by means of vascular reconstruction, limb salvage is feasible in a high percentage of cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vascular trauma associated with bony injuries is an orthopaedic emergency. Lack of timely intervention can lead to loss of limb or even life. Inspite of the rising incidence of high speed road traffic accidents in India, there is paucity of literature regarding the demographic pattern, clinical morbidity, management strategies and outcome of arterial injuries associated with lower limb trauma. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology and outcome of lower extremity musculoskeletal trauma with associated vascular injuries in a tertiary care institute in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS All individuals who presented to our tertiary care trauma center from July 2013 to December 2014 with lower extremity vascular injury associated with lower limb fractures were identified from a retrospective trauma database for this descriptive study. For the 17 months, there were 82 lower extremity vascular trauma cases admitted in our trauma center, of which 50 cases were included in the study. 32 patients with crush injuries, traumatic amputations, and those with head injury and blunt trauma to chest or abdomen were excluded from the study. RESULTS Out of the 50 cases of lower extremity vascular injury with associated lower limb fractures, 19 limbs were salvaged, 28 amputated, and three patients expired. Young males in the age group of 20-39 years were frequently injured. Motor vehicle accident (MVA) (82%) was found to be the most common cause followed by pedestrian injury. Popliteal artery (62%) was the most common vessel injured, followed by femoral artery (28%). The salvageability percentage was much higher (64%) in the femoral artery injury group when compared to popliteal artery injury group (25%). There were 32 open fractures, with amputation rates (60%) being higher and all three cases of death falling in this group. In addition, the limb salvageability percentage was 43.2% when the patient presented within 12 h of injury and this decreased to a mere 16.7% when the patient had presented more than 24 h after injury. CONCLUSION MVAs are the leading cause of vascular injuries in India. Road safety measures and prevention programs are the need of the hour to prevent these kinds of injuries in the future.

Abstract
Trauma, both blunt and penetrating, is extremely common worldwide, as trauma to major vessels. The management of these patients requires specialized surgical skills and techniques of the trauma surgeon. Furthermore few other surgical emergencies require immediate diagnosis and treatment like a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). Mortality of patients with a rAAA reaches 85 %, with more than half dying before reaching the hospital. These are acute events demanding immediate intervention to save life and limb and precluding any attempt at transfer or referral. It is the purpose of this position paper to discuss neck, chest, extremities and abdominal trauma, bringing to light recent evidence based data as well as expert opinions; besides, in this paper we present a review of the recent literature on rAAA and we discuss the rationale for transfer to referral center, the role of preoperative imaging and the pros and cons of Endoluminal repair of rAAA (REVAR) versus Open Repair (OR).

Abstract
In an emergency, a general surgeon may be faced with the need to treat arterial trauma of the extremities when specialized vascular surgery is not available in their hospital setting, either because an arterial lesion was not diagnosed during pre-admission triage, or because of iatrogenic arterial injury. The need for urgent control of hemorrhage and limb ischemia may contra-indicate immediate transfer to a hospital with a specialized vascular surgery service. For a non-specialized surgeon, hemostasis and revascularization rely largely on damage control techniques and the use of temporary vascular shunts (TVS). Insertion of a TVS is indicated for vascular injuries involving the proximal portion of extremity vessels, while hemorrhage from distal arterial injuries can be treated with simple arterial ligature. Proximal and distal control of the injured vessel must be obtained, followed by proximal and distal Fogarty catheter thrombectomy and lavage with heparinized saline. The diameter of the TVS should be closely approximated to that of the artery; use of an oversized TVS may result in intimal tears. Systematic performance of decompressive fasciotomy is recommended in order to prevent compartment syndrome. In the immediate postoperative period, the need for systematic use of anticoagulant or anti-aggregant medications has not been demonstrated. The patient should be transferred to a specialized center for vascular surgery as soon as possible. The interval before definitive revascularization depends on the overall condition of the patient. The long-term limb conservation results after placement of a TVS are identical to those obtained when initial revascularization is performed.

Abstract
A seven years retrospective study was performed in 45
consecutive vascular injuries in the extremities to investigate
the pattern of injuries, managements and outcomes.
Motor-vehicle accidents were the leading cause of injuries
(80%), followed by industrial injuries (11.1%) and iatrogenic
injuries (4.4%). Popliteal and brachial artery injuries were
commonly involved (20%). Fifteen (33.3%) patients had
fractures, dislocation or fracture dislocation around the knee
joint and 6 (13.3%) patients had soft tissue injuries without
fracture. Traumatic arterial transection accounted for 34
(75.6%) cases, followed by laceration in 7 (15.6%) and 9
(6.7%) contusions. Associated nerve injuries were seen in 8
(17.8 %) patients using intra-operative findings as the gold
standard, both conventional angiogram (CA) and
computerized tomography angiogram (CTA) had 100%
specificity and 100% sensitivity in determining the site of
arterial injuries. The mean ischemic time was 25.31 hours (4 - 278 hours).
Thirty-three (73.3 %) patients were treated more than 6
hours after injury and 6 patients underwent revascularization
after 24 hours; all had good collateral circulation without
distal pulses or evidence of ischemic neurological deficit.
The mean ischemic time in 39 patients who underwent
revascularization within 24 hours was 13.2 hours. Delayed
amputation was performed in 5 patients (11.1%). Of the 6
patients who underwent delayed revascularization, one
patient had early amputation, one -had delayed amputation
following infection and multiple flap procedures while the
rest of the patients’ limbs survived. Joint stiffness was noted
in 10 patients (22.2%) involving the knee joint, elbow and
shoulder in two patients each. Infection was also noted in 5
patients (11.1%) with two of them were due to infected
implants. Other complications encountered included nonunion
(2 patients, 4.4%), delayed union (1 patient, 2.2%),limb length discrepancy (1 patient, 2.2%), hematoma (1
patient, 2.2%) and leaking anastomosis in one patient
(2.2%). Volkmann’s ischemic contracture occurred in 3
(6.7%) patients. There was no complication noted in 8
(17.8%) patients Three patients (6.7%) died of whom two
were not due to vascular causes. We conclude that early
detection and revascularization of traumatic vascular injuries
is important but delayed revascularization also produced
acceptable results.

Abstract
Background Management of peripheral vascular injuries often present critical challenges in resource limited settings of developing countries. The additional burden from a military conflict poses further challenges. Delays in presentation often result in the loss of limb and even life, in what is usually a young active population. The objective of this report is to analyse the early outcome of vascular intervention at a tertiary referral centre in Sri Lanka. Methods A retrospective descriptive review of eighty one consecutive extremity vascular injuries in seventy patients during a seven month period was performed with regards to the cause of injury, types of presentations, ischaemia time, interventional procedures, complications and early outcome. Results Mean age was 31.2 years (9-72 years) and 96% were males. Injuries were caused by blasts in 41%, cuts in 26%, gunshots in 17% and road traffic injuries in 9%. Indications for revascularization were acute ischaemia in 44%, active bleeding in 43% and pseudo-aneurysms in 13%. Six patients underwent primary amputations due to non-viable limbs. 64 patients underwent vascular intervention. Fifty one percent needed vein grafts while 46% had direct repairs. Bleeding was often (73%) from upper extremity injuries. Median time to revascularization was 5.5 (2-16) hours with all limbs salvaged. Acute ischaemia (40%) was often from popliteal injuries. Median time to revascularization was 10 (5-18) hours and viability was prejudged at fasciotomy. 92% of revascularized limbs were salvaged. There was no perioperative mortality. Conclusions Results from vascular repairs are encouraging despite significant delays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mechanism and pattern of vascular injury vary between different populations. The commonest mechanism of vascular injury in civilian practice is road traffic collisions. We aimed to prospectively study the incidence, detailed mechanism and anatomical distribution of hospitalized vascular trauma patients following road traffic collisions in a high-income developing country. METHODS Data were collected prospectively on road traffic collision injuries in the whole city of Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates, from April 2006 to October 2007 with full details of mechanism of injury and its relation to sustained injuries. RESULTS Out of 1008 patients in the registry, 13 patients had vascular injury, a calculated incidence of 1.87 cases/100 000 inhabitants per year. There were eight car occupants, four pedestrians, and one motorcyclist. Upper limb vascular injuries were the most common anatomical site (n = 4) followed by thoracic aorta (n = 3). All thoracic aortic injuries were acceleration injuries (pedestrians hit by a moving vehicle). None of the eight car occupants was wearing a seatbelt and the majority sustained a front impact deceleration injuries. The median injury severity score, hospital stay, and ICU stay were significantly higher in the vascular injury group compared with nonvascular group (P < 0.0001). Three patients died (23%); two due to severe liver trauma and one due to rupture thoracic aorta. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of hospitalized vascular injury due to road traffic collisions in Al-Ain city is 1.87 cases/100 000 inhabitants. These injuries occurred mainly in the upper part of the body. Seatbelt compliance of car occupants having vascular injuries was very low. Compliance with safety measures needs more enforcement in our community.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes the causes of injuries, presentations, surgical approaches, outcome and complications of vascular trauma of the upper limbs, in spite of limited hospital resources. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective analysis. From 01/01/2001 to 31/12/2005, 165 patients were operated for vascular injuries at King Fahd Hospital, Medina, Saudi Arabia. Of all peripheral vascular trauma patients (115), upper limb trauma was present in 58. Diagnosis was made by physical examination and hand-held Doppler alone or in combination with Doppler scan/angiography. Primary vascular repair was performed whenever possible; otherwise, the interposition vein graft was used. Fasciotomy was considered when required. Patients with unsalvageable lower extremity injury requiring primary amputation were excluded from the study. RESULTS: Fifty patients were male (86%) and eight were female (14%), aged between 2.5-55 years (mean 23 years). Mean duration of presentation was 8 h after the injury. The most common etiological factor was road traffic accidents, accounting for 50.5% in the blunt trauma group and 33% among all penetrating and stab wound injuries. Incidence of concomitant orthopedic injuries was very high in our study (51%). The brachial artery was the most affected (51%). Interposition vein grafts were used in 53% of the cases. Limb salvage rate was 100%. CONCLUSION: Patients who suffer vascular injuries of the upper extremities should be transferred to vascular surgery centers as soon as possible. Decisive management of peripheral vascular trauma will maximize patient survival and limb salvage. Priorities must be established in the management of associated injuries, and delay must be avoided when ischemic changes are present.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Popliteal artery injury is uncommon but poses a significant challenge in Australian trauma care. Blunt trauma and knee dislocations appear to be associated with higher amputation rates. The aim of the present study was to review the authors' experience with this condition and discuss the best approach to investigation and management. METHODS The medical records of all patients with popliteal artery injury (n = 19) who were entered prospectively onto the Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Registry from 1995 to 2003 were reviewed. Their demographic data, investigations, primary operative procedures, fasciotomy, primary and secondary amputation rates and mortality were determined. RESULTS There were 17 male and two female patients with a median age of 34 years (range 17-62 years). Most patients (84%) were under 40 years in age. Blunt trauma was the commonest cause of popliteal artery injury (68.4%), and 84.6% of the patients had associated skeletal injury. The amputation rate in the present study was 26.3% (5/19). There were no intraoperative or in-hospital deaths. Three of 13 patients (23%) with blunt trauma underwent amputation, compared to two of six (33.3%) with penetrating injury. Two of three amputee patients in the blunt trauma group had dislocated knees. CONCLUSION Despite technical improvements in management of popliteal artery injury, a high amputation rate is still seen, especially in patients with one or more of the following factors: extensive soft-issue injury, associated skeletal trauma, knee dislocation, and prolonged ischaemia time. Measures to reduce the amputation rate, ranging from more prompt diagnosis to modified surgical treatment techniques, are discussed.
