Abstract
We have been able to induce a series of lactonisation reactions of unsaturated acids using a carbocationic intermediate formed in situ. The transformation generates five and six membered lactone rings AND forms a new exocyclic C-C bond at the same time, thus removing the need for further derivatisation of typical lactonisation products (such as from iodo lactonisation). The reaction is operationally straightforward, does not employ any metals and utilises readily accessible alcohol and unsaturated acid substrates.

Abstract
Alternating-rich copolymer of vinylboronic acid pinacol ester (VBpin) and maleic anhydride (MAH) was found to catalyze direct dehydrative esterification of carboxylic acid and alcohol. The key to the catalytic function is the activation of the MAH unit by the neighboring Lewis acidic boron directly connected to the backbone through the formation of five-membered ring. The effects of the side-chain cooperation were clarified through comparisons with the polymers having similar structures and a conventional titanium catalyst as well as the analyses of reactions with carboxylic acid or alcohol. The catalytic activity was enhanced as the molecular weight was higher, which is owing to the structural feature that boron is directly attached to the backbone. The cooperative catalysis is of interest because of its conceptual similarity with enzyme.

Abstract
The esterification of carboxylic acids is an important reaction for preparing esters which find wide applications in various research fields. In this manuscript, we report an acid/iodide cooperative catalytic method which enables highly efficient esterification of carboxylic acids with a wide range of equivalent O-H nucleophiles including both alcohols and weak nucleophilic phenols. Under the reaction conditions, both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids including those bearing functional groups work well, furnishing the corresponding esters in good to high yields. Moreover, this reaction is scalable and applicable to the modification of bioactive molecules. These results demonstrate the synthetic value of this new reaction in organic synthesis.

Abstract
Ester compounds, widely found in pharmaceutical and natural products, play a crucial role in organic synthesis, prompting the development of numerous methods for their synthesis. An important chemical approach in synthesizing esters from carboxylic acids involves the activation of the carboxyl function, requiring the conversion of the hydroxyl group into a suitable leaving group. This paper presents the findings of our investigations into an efficient method for producing esters from carboxylic acids and alcohols, using the Lewis acid titanium tetrachloride. Titanium tetrachloride has proven highly effective as a coupling reagent for the one-pot formation of esters from carboxylic acids and alcohols operating under mild and neutral conditions. Notably, the reaction eliminates the need for bases, yielding carboxylic esters in high purity and yields. The method is efficient, even with long-chain carboxylic acids, and operates well with primary alcohols in dichloromethane. Steric hindrance, potentially present in carboxylic acids, has a moderate effect on the reaction. Alcohol substrates that easily form stable carbocations require, instead, the use of non-polar solvents like hexane for the reaction.

Abstract
An electrochemical approach has been leveraged to underpin a new conceptual platform for dehydration reactions, which has been demonstrated in the context of esterification. Esters were prepared from the corresponding acid and alcohol partners at room temperature without acid or base additives and without consuming stoichiometric reagents. This methodology therefore addresses key complications that plague esterification and dehydration reactions more broadly and that represent a leading challenge in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed desulfonative carbonylation of thiosulfonates has been explored. Without any additive, a series of S-aryl/alkyl benzenesulfonothioates were successfully transformed to thioesters in moderate to excellent yields by SO2 extrusion and CO insertion under the pressure of 1 bar of CO. The solvent dimethylacetamide (DMAc) facilitated this desulfonative carbonylation due to its high absorbing ability of SO2.

Abstract
Kinetic analysis of polyesterification reactions using Lewis-acidic metal catalysts have been performed. While Sn-based catalysts are superior to Ti-based catalysts under neat polycondensation conditions (high [H2O]), the result is inverted under azeotropic conditions (low [H2O]). These findings show that the catalytic activity is crucially determined by the robustness of the catalyst against hydrolytic degradation. Kinetic studies of Lewis acidic metal-catalyzed polyesterification reactions unveiled that titanium-based catalyst are prone to hydrolytic degradation, while n-BuSnOOH proved to be a robust catalyst.![]()

Abstract
Transesterification of ethyl-10-undecenoate (derived from castor oil) with 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol over a recyclable Cu-deposited V2O5 catalyst afforded 1,ω-diene, the corresponding cyclohexane-1,4-diylbis(methylene) bis(undec-10-enoate), a promising monomer for the synthesis of biobased polyesters, in an efficient manner. Deposition of Cu plays an important role in proceeding the reaction with high selectivity, and both the activity and the selectivity are preserved for five recycled runs by the addition of the substrates. The present catalyst was effective for transesterification with other alcohols, especially primary alcohols, demonstrating a possibility of using this catalyst for efficient conversion of plant oil to various fine chemicals.

Abstract
A Mn(III)-promoted thiocarbonylation procedure toward the synthesis of thioesters has been developed. By employing easily available disulfides and potassium alkyltrifluoroborates as the starting materials, and cheap and non-toxic Mn(OAc)3·2H2O as the promotor, a broad range of thioesters were synthesized in good to excellent yields via radical intermediates.

Abstract
A new transmetallation approach is described for the synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs). Typically, the synthesis of metal oxide NCs in oleyl alcohol is driven by metal-based esterification catalysis with oleic acid to produce oleyl oleate ester and M-OH monomers, which then condense to form MxOy solids. Here we show that the synthesis of Cu2O NCs by this method is limited by the catalytic ability of copper to drive esterification and thus produce Cu+-OH monomers. However, inclusion of 1-15 mol% of a group 13 cation (Al3+, Ga3+, or In3+) results in efficient synthesis of Cu2O NCs and exhibits size/morphology control based on the nature of M3+. Using a continuous-injection procedure where the copper precursor (Cu2+-oleate) and catalyst (M3+-oleate) are injected into oleyl alcohol at a controlled rate, we are able to monitor the reactivity of the precursor and M3+ catalyst using UV-visible and FTIR absorbance spectroscopies. These time-dependent measurements clearly show that M3+ catalysts drive esterification to produce M3+-OH species, which then undergo transmetallation of hydroxide ligands to generate Cu+-OH monomers required for Cu2O condensation. Ga3+ is found to be the "goldilocks" catalyst, producing NCs with the smallest size and a distinct cubic morphology not observed for any other group 13 metal. This is believed to be due to rapid transmetallation kinetics between Ga3+-OH and Cu+-oleate. These studies introduce a new mechanism for the synthesis of metal oxides where inherent catalysis by the parent metal (i.e. copper) can be circumvented with the use of a secondary catalyst to generate hydroxide ligands.

Abstract
Relative rates for the Lewis base-mediated acylation of secondary and primary alcohols carrying large aromatic side chains with anhydrides differing in size and electronic structure have been measured. While primary alcohols react faster than secondary ones in transformations with monosubstituted benzoic anhydride derivatives, relative reactivities are inverted in reactions with sterically biased 1-naphthyl anhydrides. Further analysis of reaction rates shows that increasing substrate size leads to an actual acceleration of the acylation process, the effect being larger for secondary as compared to primary alcohols. Computational results indicate that acylation rates are guided by noncovalent interactions (NCIs) between the catalyst ring system and the DED substituents in the alcohol and anhydride reactants. Thereby stronger NCIs are formed for secondary alcohols than for primary alcohols.

Abstract
Herein, we describe two novel strategies for the synthesis of esters, as achieved under high-speed ball-milling (HSBM) conditions at room temperature. In the presence of I2 and KH2PO2, the reactions afford the desired esterification derivatives in 45% to 91% yields within 20 min of grinding. Meanwhile, using KI and P(OEt)3, esterification products can be obtained in 24% to 85% yields after 60 min of grinding. In addition, the I2/KH2PO2 protocol was successfully extended to the late-stage diversification of natural products showing the robustness of this useful approach. Further application of this method in the synthesis of inositol nicotinate was also discussed.

Abstract
A highly efficient method for parallel synthesis of a diversity of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles from N-substituted phenylenediamines and aldehydes has been developed by using 10 mol% HfCl4 on activated carbon (HfCl4/C) as the catalyst. The newly reported HfCl4/C catalyst not only mediated fast and clean formation of benzimidazoles but also could be easily removed from the reaction solution and reused up to eight times. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermal desorption studies showed that activated carbon could reversibly adsorb and release Hf(IV) in ethanol upon cooling and heating, thereby serving as a thermal-controlled solid support.

Abstract
Silicones are polymers that have properties of great interest for cosmetic and personal care industry, especially D4 (octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane) and D5 (decamethylcyclopentasiloxane), generically named cyclomethicones. However, different studies show the hypothesis that the use of these products is harmful and, therefore, several countries have adopted legislative actions to limit their use in personal care and cosmetic products. Faced with this new situation, different cosmetic companies began to look for different alternatives to cyclomethicones, mainly: organomodified silicones or esters. The former are based on the addition of functional groups to the main chain of silicon and oxygen. The latter represent a totally different line, since their functional group is the ester, but they have properties similar to silicones. Esters, especially branched-chain ones are currently the more promising alternative to replace cyclomethicones in cosmetic formulations. Nowadays, most of them are obtained by chemical reactions that require high temperatures and non-selective /contaminant catalysts that lead to low-quality final products. As an alternative, biocatalytic synthesis occurs always at mild operation conditions supplying ultra-pure, odor, and colorless products with less wastes and side reactions. Therefore, biocatalysis is a valid and environmentally sustainable option for the synthesis of silicone-substitute esters used in cosmetic formulations.

Abstract
A practical and efficient base-catalyzed esterification has been developed for the facile synthesis of a broad range of esters from simple alcohols with unactivated tert-butyl esters. This protocol could be conducted at mild conditions, providing esters in high to excellent yields with good functional tolerance. Mechanistic studies provided evidence of an exchange of the tert-butyl alkoxide metal with the alcohol, producing a new alkoxide to participate in the transesterification reaction.

Abstract
A one-pot synthesis of thioesters directly from carboxylic acids, N,N'-diphenylthiourea, triethylamine, and primary alkyl halides is described. Microwave-assisted heating and a catalytic amount of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) further improved the yields. Both aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acids were converted to the corresponding thioesters, and many functional groups were compatible with this reaction. Several possible reaction intermediates were investigated, and the quaternary ammonium salts, derived from alkyl halides and tertiary amines, were the intermediates to yield thioesters. A new reaction mechanism for this thioesterification is proposed.
