Abstract
Highly substituted trans-hydrindanes were synthesized by the three-component coupling reactions of 1,3-diethyl 2-(2-oxopropylidene)propanedioate and two different α,β-unsaturated aldehydes catalyzed by diphenylprolinol silyl ether. The reaction proceeds via two successive independent catalytic domino reactions in a one-pot reaction by a single chiral catalyst. Domino reactions involve Michael/Michael and Michael/aldol reactions to afford trans-hydrindanes with excellent diastereoselectivity and nearly optically pure form.

Abstract
Gibberellins (GAs) are important plant hormones, but some of their family members are in extremely limited natural supply including GA18. Herein, we report a concise synthesis of (-)-GA18 methyl ester, a member of the C20 gibberellins, from commercially available and cheap andrographolide. Our synthesis features an intramolecular ene reaction to form the C ring, an oxidative cleavage followed by aldol condensation to realize a ring contraction and form the challenging trans-hydrindane (AB ring), and a photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition accompanied by a subsequent SmI2-mediated skeletal rearrangement to construct the methylenebicyclo[3.2.1]octanol moiety (CD ring).

Abstract
A convergent approach for the total synthesis of calcipotriol (brand name: Dovonex), a proven vitamin D analog used for the treatment of psoriasis, and medicinally relevant synthetic analogs is described. A complete approach, not wedded to semisynthesis, toward both the A-ring and CD-ring is reported. From a retrosynthetic standpoint, hidden symmetry within the decorated A-ring is disclosed, which allowed for scalable quantities of this advanced intermediate. In addition, a radical retrosynthetic approach is described, which highlights an electrochemical reductive coupling as well as an intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer Giese addition to establish the 6,5-transcarbon skeleton found in the vitamin D family. Finally, a late-stage decarboxylative cross-coupling approach allowed for the facile preparation of various C20-arylated derivatives that show promising biological activity in an initial bioassay.

Abstract
The total synthesis of (+)-03219A, a rare Δ8,9-pregnene isolated from the marine-derived Streptomyces sp. SCSIO 03219, is described that is based on a series of transformations that enable progression from epichlorohydrin to an ent-estrane, then conversion to a nat-androstane, and finally establishment of the natural product target. Key to the success of these studies was implementation of two rearrangement processes to formally invert the quaternary center at C13 and establish the C10 quaternary center.

Abstract
The first total syntheses of three unusual norrisolide-type rearranged spongian diterpenes, cheloviolene C, seconorrisolide B, and seconorrisolide C, have been accomplished via a common intermediate through late-stage ring-scissoring. The synthesis features a Wolff ring contraction for the synthesis of the trans-hydrindane system, and a crucial retro Diels-Alder reaction/intramolecular ene cyclization for the rapid stereoselective construction of the furo[2,3-b]furan system, which is commonly seen in rearranged spongian diterpenes.

Abstract
The bicyclo[4.3.0]nonane scaffold, commonly known as a hydrindane, is a common structural motif found in many terpenoid structures and one that remains a challenge for synthetic chemists to elaborate with appropriate regio- and stereo-selectivity. Over the course of the study of terpene natural products, the elaboration of the hydrindane structure has seen progress on the utilization of both old and newer methods to achieve the desired outcomes. This review seeks to serve as a general overview of these methods, and detail specific examples.

Abstract
A rare 5-exo-dig SNi' cyclization with magnesiated and lithiated nitriles affords a cis-fused hydrindane bearing an exocyclic allene. The cyclization of the dilithiated nitrile pits a stereoelectronic preference for a trans-hydrindane against a cyclization through a less strained transition structure to the corresponding cis-hydrindane. Computational modeling suggests that the dilithiated nitrile cyclizes to a cis-hydrindane because the preferred transition structure positions the lithium cation in a cone of electron density that bridges the nitrile-bearing carbon, an alkoxide, and an electron-rich alkyne functionality.

Abstract
The molecular structure, vibrational frequencies, and infrared intensities of thetert-butyl 3a-chloroperhydro-2,6a-epoxyoxireno[e]isoindole-5-carboxylate were calculated by the HF and DFT (BLYP and B3LYP) methods using 6-31G(d) and 6-31G(d,p) basis sets. The FT infrared spectrum of the solid sample was measured under standard condition. We obtained two stable conformers for the title compound; however Conformer 1 is approximately 0.2 kcal/mol more stable than the Conformer 2. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental geometry of the title compound shows that the X-ray parameters fairly well reproduce the geometry of Conformer 2. Comparison of the observed fundamental vibrational frequencies of the title molecule and calculated results by HF and DFT methods indicates that B3LYP is superior for molecular vibrational problems. The harmonic vibrations computed by the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method are in a good agreement with the observed IR spectral data. Theoretical vibrational spectra of the title compound were interpreted by means of potential energy distributions (PEDs) using VEDA 4 program.

Abstract
A convergent synthesis of highly substituted and stereodefined dihydroindanes is described from alkoxide-directed Ti-mediated cross-coupling of internal alkynes with substituted 4-hydroxy-1,6-enynes (substrates that derive from 2-directional functionalization of readily available epoxy alcohol derivatives). In addition to describing a new and highly stereoselective approach to bimolecular [2 + 2 + 2] annulation that delivers products not available with other methods in this area of chemical reactivity, evidence is provided to support annulation by way of regioselective alkyne-alkyne coupling, followed by metal-centered [4 + 2] rather than stepwise alkene insertion and reductive elimination. Overall, the reaction proceeds with exquisite stereochemical control and defines a convenient, convergent, and enantiospecific entry to fused carbocycles of great potential value in target-oriented synthesis and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
Metalated nitriles are nucleophilic chameleons whose precise identity is determined by the nature of the metal, the solvent, the temperature, and the structure of the nitrile. The review surveys the different structural types and their cyclization trajectories to show how to selectively tune the metalated nitrile geometry for stereoselective cyclizations to a variety of cis or trans hydrindanes, decalins, and bicyclo[4.3.0]undecanes.

Abstract
Stereodivergent cyclizations of gamma-hydroxy cyclohexanecarbonitriles are controlled simply through judicious choice of cation in the alkylmetal base. Deprotonating a series of cyclic gamma-hydroxy nitriles with i-PrMgBr generates C-magnesiated nitriles that cyclize under stereoelectronic control to cis-fused hydrindanes, decalins, and bicyclo [5.4.0] undecanes. An analogous deprotonation with BuLi triggers cyclization to trans-fused hydrindanes, decalins, and bicyclo [5.4.0] undecanes consistent with a sterically controlled electrophilic attack on an equatorial nitrile anion. Using cations to control the geometry of metalated nitriles provides a versatile, stereodivergent cyclization to cis- and trans-hydrindanes, decalins, and [5. 4. 0] undecanes, and reveals the key geometric requirements for intramolecular S(N)2 and S(N)2' displacements.

Abstract
The A,B-ring-truncated OSW saponin analogs (1, 18a, and 18b) were synthesized. These greatly simplified trans-hydrindane disaccharides retained considerable inhibitory activity against the growth of HeLa and Jurkat T cells (IC(50)=0.8-21.1 microM).

Abstract
1 alpha,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol, 1) is a bioregulator important for the treatment of various human metabolic diseases and biomedical research. Herein, we report an efficient diastereoselective approach to the key trans-hydrindane building block for calcitriol synthesis (2a) starting from the readily accessible optically active tetrahydroindenedione derivative (Hajos dione, 3). It was found that epoxide ring opening in a related hydroxy epoxide (7) with sodium cyanoborohydride-BF3 x Et2O occurs by hydride anion addition at the ring juncture position to produce a vicinal diol with the trans-hydrindane ring system (6a). Four methods for selective deoxygenation of the sterically less shielded hydroxy group in diol 6a were examined with an approach based on a cyclic sulfate of the diol as the most efficient and operationally convenient method.

Abstract
Chelation provides a powerful means of stereocontrol in alkylations of metalated nitriles. Doubly deprotonating a series of cyclic beta-hydroxynitriles triggers cyclizations that implicate metalated nitrile intermediates having configurations imposed by chelation with an adjacent, chiral lithium alkoxide. Identifying chelation as a general stereocontrol element explains several previously anomalous alkylations of metalated nitriles and provides a potential solution to the long-standing difficulty of synthesizing trans-hydrindanes. Employing chelation to control the metalated nitrile geometry permits selective cyclizations to cis and trans hydrindanes and decalins and provides key insight into the geometrical requirements of these demanding cyclizations.

Abstract

Bulky phosphite L6 and several sterically robust phosphoramidites are excellent ligands for promoting the Pd-catalyzed [3 + 2] intramolecular cycloaddition between alkylidenecyclopropanes and alkynes. The use of these ligands allows for low catalyst loadings and facilitates the otherwise sluggish cycloaddition of hept-6-ynylidenecyclopropane systems.
