Abstract
Site-selective nitrene transfer to di- and polyene substrates has been achieved using designed peptide-embedded bioxazoline ligands capable of binding copper. In model 1,3-diene substrates, the olefinic position proximal to a directing group was selectively functionalized. Additional studies indicate that this selectivity stems from non-covalent substrate-catalyst interactions. The peptide-mediated nitrene transfer was also applied to polyene natural product retinol and selective proximal functionalization allowed access to a cis-pyrroline modified retinoid.

Abstract
A range of photochemically generated tri- and tetracyclic vinyl aziridines have been found to undergo a general and surprisingly low temperature ring opening through a [1,5]-hydrogen shift reaction. The rate of the process was found to be highly dependent on the structure and substitution around the azirdine ring and the alkene terminus, with some substrates being observed to undergo ring opening at temperatures as low as 25 °C. The rigid nature of these polycyclic systems precludes a conformational explanation of these rate differences, and an Eyring study confirmed a negligible entropic barrier to the reaction. However, the Eyring plots for two different aziridines systems showed a significant difference in their enthalpies of activation. It is therefore believed that the levels of aziridine ring strain, as well as electronic effects, are the dominant factors in this sequence.

Abstract
Use of FEP flow reactor technology allows access to gram quantities of photochemically-generated tricyclic aziridines. These undergo a range of novel palladium-catalyzed ring-opening and cycloaddition reactions, likely driven by their inherent strain, allowing incorporation of further functionality by fusing additional heterocyclic rings onto these already complex polycyclic cores. This rapid, 2-step access to complex sp3 - rich heterocycles should be of interest to those in the fields of drug discovery and natural product synthesis.

Abstract
The stereoselective synthesis of 5-5, 6-5, and 7-5 fused O-heterocyclic compounds is reported. The key reaction is a formal intramolecular (4 + 1)-cycloaddition involving a dialkoxycarbene and an electron-deficient diene where the stereoselectivity is dependent on the length of the tether. An analysis of the stereochemical outcome of this reaction sheds light on its complex mechanistic picture. High-level calculations were used to support the proposed mechanistic portrait.

Abstract
A novel synthetic methodology has been developed for the synthesis of diethyl 5-alkyl/aryl/heteroaryl substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-4,4-dicarboxylates (also called 2-substituted pyrroline-4,5-dihydro-3,3-dicarboxylic acid diethyl esters) by iodide ion induced ring expansion of 2-[(aziridin-1-yl)-1-alkyl/aryl/heteroaryl-methylene]malonic acid diethyl esters in very good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. The electronic and steric impact of the substituents on the kinetics of ring expansion of N-vinyl aziridines to pyrrolines has been studied. Various diversely substituted novel pyrroline derivatives have been synthesized by this methodology and the products can be used as key intermediates in the synthesis of substituted pyrrolines, pyrroles and pyrrolidines.

Abstract
In this report, it is demonstrated that chiral vinyl aziridines can be stereospecifically ring expanded. This synthetic approach allows controlled access to chiral 2,5-cis- or 2,5-trans-3-pyrroline products from starting materials with the appropriate aziridine geometry. Twenty three ring expansion examples, most of which feature a stereospecific cyclization, are presented.

Abstract
A combination of physical organic experiments and quantum chemical calculations were used to construct a detailed mechanistic model for the Ni(0)-N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed vinylcyclopropane-cyclopentene rearrangement that involves a mutistep oxidative addition/haptotropic shift/reductive elimination pathway. No evidence for the intermediacy of radicals or zwitterions was found. The roles of substituents on the vinylcyclopropane substrate and variations in the ligands on Ni were evaluated. It is postulated that bulky carbene ligands facilitate formation of the active catalyst species.

Abstract
The three-component aminoallylation reaction of the activated olefins 2 with the phthalimide 1a and allyl chloride proceeded very smoothly in the presence of Pd(2)dba(3).CHCl(3) (5 mol %)/P(4-FC(6)H(4))(3) (40 mol %) and Cs(2)CO(3) (3 equiv against 2) in dichloromethane at room temperature to give the corresponding aminoallylated products, N-pent-4-enylphthalimides 3, in 58-99% yields. The reaction of oxazolidinone 1b also proceeded very smoothly to give N-(2,2-dicyano-1-phenylpent-4-enyl)oxazolidinone in a quantitative yield; however, the Tsuji-Trost-type allylation products 4 were obtained in the case of dibenzylamine, N-tosylaniline, and pyrrolidin-2-one. Further, 2 underwent cycloaddition with N-tosylvinylaziridine 9a in the presence of Pd(2)dba(3).CHCl(3) (5 mol %)/P(4-FC(6)H(4))(3) (40 mol %) in THF at room temperature, giving the corresponding pyrrolidines 11 in 69-99% yields.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] By choosing the right substituents either highly functionalized unusual four-membered ring amino acids or the isomeric pipecolic acid derivatives are obtained in enantiomerically pure form. Starting material is a linear allene-containing amino acid that has been resolved via biocatalysis.
